Personal Description:
I am 56 years old, am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience. I am an easy-going reliable person who likes to make my students feel at ease at all times.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching seconday school students since qualifying in 1998. I have had two full-time posts, worked as a supply teacher as well as having private students. I have worked in Inner London, Outer London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire schools. I have also worked in France at a small private school during the '80's, predominantly teaching adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach French using the native tongue as much as possible. I use my own resources although I use the Internet for ideas whenever it's suitable.
For Maths I follow the syllabus laid down by whichever examining board the student is using and resources come from a wide variety of places usually from where I have recently been teaching. I gather information from colleagues who sometimes have great ideas. I like to be able to go through past papers with students marking work as we go through a course.

My main subject area is Design and Technology which I am currently teaching in an Independent school. Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern and forceful. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.



Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

My approach to tutoring is an investigative and supportive. ie their is a lot of logics or knowledge that I child sometimes laready have, by questioning sometimes these will come out. That way the child will remember the information fo a longer time as he/she contributed to the answer. She/he feels valued and a part of the teaching and learning process.
Each child I tutor is alway given a diagnostic test. From the test I would do a Individual Learning Plan. During tutoring as I identify weak areas I address them individually. I see education as a completed chain link, that is if a child is lacking in certain background knowledge, they will find it difficult to move forward effectively with their education. Unless these weak areas are address and their knowledge concretize they find it difficult to move on.
Parent's feedback is apart of this process and children must be praised throughout their learning, when neccessary and this needs to be done in context.

Personal Description:
I am a final year undergraduate student studying for an Bsc in Geophysics at Imperial College London. Alongside my studies I am also involved with charity work, play the violin in one of my university's orchestras and enjoy a variety of different types of sport. I would like to think I am friendly and approachable, and highly motivated to achieve in everything I do.

Teaching Experience:

I have 2 years of tutoring experience, especially with both maths and physics GCSE. Aside from private tutoring I volunteered for a tutoring scheme run by my university called 'Team Up', which will gave me invaluable experience and practice at tutoring Year 8 students in KS3 Science. For part of this I attended a short course run by Teach First on how to become a better tutor and have had a CRB check performed.

In past years I have also volunteered for a local Geological Trust, which involved in taking part in 'Geological Road shows' and trying to engage children with geology using activities, workshops, games etc. I have also completed a weeks work experience in a local Primary School, where I shadowed a Year 4 teacher and took charge of small groups in need of extra support.

I have also been an active member in Girl Guiding for numerous years, and have taken many leadership roles. These include being a young leader at a local brownie and rainbow group (aged mainly between 5-10 years old) for the last two years; and although out of a formal teaching environment, it was a role of responsibility and has given me more experience engaging with young children.

In my secondary school I also took part in a weekly music mentoring workshop for several years to help teach younger students how to play string instruments, mainly the violin. Though hard work I found this thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding; especially when some of my students went on to attend paid lessons and take graded examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I always aim to engage with my students and attempt to make learning as interesting and stimulating as possible. I also believe that recapping previously covered material through short sessions each week can help the student to retain and recall information more easily - and make pre-exam revision less daunting.

As I have only recently completed my A-Levels I feel that I am in a very good position to help students within the education system, as I have first-hand experience. I believe good exam technique can be hugely beneficial to students sitting national qualifications, and I would be able to pass on my experience in dealing with examinations to your child. Organisation is also an important skill, not only whilst at school but for future life, and I would again hope to pass on this attribute to your son or daughter; helping them learn to plan their study time and revision.

A recent Master of Mathematics graduate from UEA in Norwich, with a year studying in Melbourne Australia. I have great experience working with various age groups and personalities.

Teaching Experience:

I started tutoring GCSE maths in Year 13, providing a very structured learning by my school. The students engaged well and it helped to have people of a similar age that the students could relate to, enabling a more relaxed learning atmosphere. I have also informally helped peers of various levels whilst at university, maths students but also engineering and foundation levels. When my services were required in a particular area, then they asked for help on short notice. I am now enjoying tutoring whilst learning a postgraduate Masters course.

Tutoring Approach:

Can look at casual tutoring of areas of difficulty, or can do more structured learning of a curriculum, either intense learning or weekly troubleshooting.

The first meeting will be free with the aim of getting to know one another and the strengths and weaknesses of the tutee. At which point a structured plan of action can be drawn up. In some cases the tutee may lack the confidence in areas, but can in fact do what's required. Even a casual troubleshooting session every now and then can set their worries at rest.

Should extracurricular material be required or wanted then I'll be happy to provide. This material might not be hard for the tutee, but will help link in various areas of mathematics and will require a little thought about the patterns seen. Maths is a series of patterns, the quicker you can see them the faster it will be to understand something that's never been covered before.

I currently have access to a car, but only in the evenings, and prices are based on travel being less than a couple of miles. I'm willing to travel further if needed though.
