Hi, my name is Christopher and welcome to my Tutoring Profile. A bit about myself: I graduated with a Masters in Chemistry from Oxford University (Worcester College, 2001 - 2005), and have been tutoring since 2005 as well as working in the Environmental Science/Engineering Sector.

Teaching Experience:
Over 2500 hours tuition experience. I offer tuition in Chemistry up to A level, Maths and Science up to GCSE. I also provide numeracy and literacy tuition for those sitting Armed Forces and aircraft/helicopter pilot exams.

Personal Description:
I am a third year medical student at Imperial College London University. I enjoy teaching and working with younger students. I have successful past experience assisting students with the medical application process, I'm happy to help with interview technique, look over personal statements and tutor UKCAT and BMAT. Teaching Experience:
I have experience tutoring students with ages ranging from 10-17 years old, in subjects including Maths, Science (GCSE and A-level) and 11+. I am currently tutoring 11+, Maths GCSE, Science GCSE, Maths A-level and Biology A-level. Other recent experience includes; Maths and Physics to a 14 year old over the summer.

Doing this has kept me up to date with different syllabuses and grading of exams. I am also aware of the style of exams and what is expected at each level.

During 2008 and 2007 I regularly tutored students aged 12 - 15 in maths. Working with students of a range of ages and abilities, has enabled me to develop methods of explaining concepts to students, so they fully understand. This was further enhanced by my experience and skills gained when volunteering at a school for children with learning difficulties.

From 2009 onwards, I have assisted students in one to one sessions with medical school admissions, from their personal statement, BMAT essays to interview practice. I have lectured at conferences geared towards helping groups of students applying to do medicine. Having gone through the process myself and helping many others do so too I am very familiar with the application process.

Tutoring Approach:
I go through the exam syllabus, and focus on any areas of weakness or where the student themselves does not feel particularly confident. I use past exam papers as these are a great way to practice, improve performance and work on exam technique. They also help to boost the student's confidence and ensure they know what to expect.

I ask the student what their expectations are and what grade they want to aim for, I will then make a plan of the necessary hours of tutoring and additional work (eg. completing a past paper and then in a session I would go over it) that I think the student will need to achieve this.

I will set out additional work that can be completed outside tutor sessions to reinforce what has been learnt in the sessions. I will also occasionally set out small tests encompassing what has been learnt in previous sessions, to highlight if there are any remaining weaknesses in understanding.

I am friendly, approachable and patient so when a student doesn't understand something properly they should not be afraid to say.

I have over 14 years of teaching experience in business studies at the Open University teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. Tutoring Approach:
I take a mentoring and nurturing approach to teaching. I prepare students both at GCSE and A Levels to sit examinations by the three main examining boards in England, namely, Aqa, OCR and Edexcel. I prefer to tutor from home and only take on a very limited number of students so that I can give my full attention to their examination success. I have tutored students who have been deemed not to be high achievers by their schools, but have subsequently gone on to gaining A grades at GCSE. I am highly motivated and nothing gives me greater pleasure than to get letters from students thanking me for helping them to gain examination success. I tutor from home as I have found students perform best in this situation and I also have access to all my teaching resources as necessary to tailor each lesson to suit a particular students needs. Although I feel tutoring from my home is a good approach I am prepared to travel to a student's home but will of course need to charge travel costs.

Personal Description:
I am 21 years old and I am in my final year at The University of Manchester where I am studying French and Italian. I have spent 6 months in Bologna in Italy, working in a private language school for those wished to learn either Italian or English. I worked as a copywriter for the school website, working in French, Italian and English. I also worked as a conversation tutor to those who wanted to learn English. I am now waiting on my results for a recognised qualification, a C1 CILS exam. In the same year, I lived in Paris for four months where I worked at ELLE, the well known women's fashion magazine, where I used solely French. I am very down to earth and my biggest passion is football, I enjoy a good movie and love a good comedy. If you feel more comfortable meeting in a neutral place, a coffee place or in the town centre that is fine by me. It is flexible. A clean criminal record and can boast a detention-less education! I have had limited teaching experience but I have shadowed those who have done this for a job and having already worked as a conversation tutor, I feel I would excel given the chance.

I will first assess the capabilities of the student and then model my explanations accordingly, as I have found that different approaches suit different people. Understanding will be consolidated by the student completing either work of his or her own, or work that I will set which will test that he or she understands the principle behind the work, as opposed to simply adopting a template for solving all questions of a certain type. I have been tutoring for just over 5 years now with all my pupils showing some level of improvement. Many going up a grade or more and having vastly improved confidence. I can provide references if required. I have tutored from primary to University level.

Tutoring Approach:
Im quite easy going I dont like to be to strict as I find students are then scared to ask me questions if they dont understand something. However I do stear the studying with a firm hand and dont let them get too far off topic as it means they arent using their time with me effectively. I have more of a hands on approach as I like to work through a few examples with the student to see where they are going wrong if they are going wrong so I can correct them at a particular step and I find that tends to help them remember things more. Practice papers are also used quite a lot along with the letts revision guides and question books as they are excellent visual aids. I do set tasks at the end of the session to be completed by the next session to show me if the student has understood it and if they can apply the rational to different questions. I also leave my email address etc so that if the student really struggles with something and does need an answer they only have to contact me.

Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring for a year and a half and enjoy it very much!

Tutoring Approach:
All of my pupils have made excellent progress and I am very good at explaining things in simple
terms, as well as being very approachable and friendly.
I have a natural rapport with children and they very much enjoy my tutoring and make rapid progress.
With smaller children, I am good at figuring out how they tick and therefore the best way to teach them. I find they are very responsive to colours and I make learning into a game, as much as is possible. I would say though that I have an old-fashioned approach to teaching and make sure they know the basics.
With economics I try to get the pupils to understand the concepts, as opposed to just learning them by rote. I think it also helps that I have worked in the business world so I have a much more in depth understanding of the subject. I also make sure they have a good knowledge of graphs as there are good marks to be had for these!

I am a 25 year old mechanical engineering graduate from UCL. Throughout my time in school, college and university i excelled in maths and other mathematical related subjects. I developed an interest in mathematics from a young age and i firmly believe that by mastering this particular subject, that further success in other scientific subjects can be achieved, as maths promotes utilising logic to deduce solutions to posed problems, which is a valuable attribute to have at your disposal at all levels of study.

I have a very positive and optimistic attitude towards teaching and learning, which i encourage the students to share, as i believe that the best results are obtained with putting in great effort and by having a positive attitude.

Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring pupils from a variety of backgrounds in maths since i was studying for my A-levels, which has given me plenty of years of experience. The majority of students i have taught for GCSE and A-level maths were sitting it on the Edexcel board, although i am flexible and have taught to students on other boards.

Tutoring Approach:
Tutoring students requires a very individualistic approach as each pupil has their own unique strengths and weaknesses in maths. As tuition with a specific student progresses, i will be able to assess which topics require additional focus, and of course i listen to the respective student's own thoughts on which topics they would prefer to focus on improving.

I generally teach topics from the particular text-book each student is using at the time. However, as the pupil makes progress though the text-book, i like to supplement their learning by going through past-paper questions with them, as i feel that from my own experiences and from what previous students have told me, that covering past-paper questions will best prepare them for the real thing, in terms of knowing what to expect and increasing their confidence.

I achieved the highest grades at GCSE and A-Level, and went on to complete a BSc in Mathematics with Finance and Management at King's College London. Since graduating, I have worked in the financial services during which I have continued learning and practising maths. I'm currently studying and working with financial pricing models and my passion for maths is still burning!

Teaching Experience:
I've taught many people many things, whether it be maths, software applications, accounting, finance, cooking or swimming! I've always worked well with others and often used the teaching of others to help improve my own understanding, throughout GCSEs, A-Levels and University. Tutoring Approach:
Drawing from personal experience, the thing I find most helpful whilst understanding maths is attempting to verbally explain exactly what it is you don't understand. This helps to pin point the problem and shed light on any shady areas surrounding the problem, as well as highlight what you do know and in turn, increase confidence in maths. I like to spend some time analysing areas of weakness and then put together a study plan(not strict) through which we can efficiently tackle the various subjects. Establishing effective ways of teaching individual students is important; whether it be visually, verbally or actively, and will be established early on also. I'm not strict on time spent, I will happily spend a bit more time getting it right for the same price!
