Personal Description:
I was a Kitchener Scholar at the University of Cambridge, where I was awarded an Entrance Prize by Trinity College and the Philpott Prize for a first class examination performance. I took a second degree with the Open University, where I won the Leslie Walshaw award for scoring 100% in the examination in Mathematical Models and Methods. (In fact, I achieved first class passes in every assignment and examination for every course I took throughout the degree.) I believe strongly in lifelong learning. I spent a year at the University of York studying second year Physics, where I also developed an interest in Economics (and have taught it at undergraduate level). I've grown my business skills as an Enterprise Fellow at York St John University, and I've taken examinations in accounting at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (I scored 92% in Financial Accounting). I'm motivated in part by personal interest, but also by the desire to be able to give my students better advice and better teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 21 years, at top-ranking schools including Charterhouse in Surrey and Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, USA. I've run dotmaths for over seven years, helping over 200 students achieve higher grades in their exams. I have taught almost every module in Mathematics and Further Mathematics for each of the four English A-level specifications (Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI) as well as the International Baccalaureate, the Pre-U and the Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics courses. I have prepared candidates for the AEA (Advanced Extension Award), the Oxford Entrance Test and STEP (Sixth Term Exam Paper for entry in Mathematics to Cambridge and Warwick.) I have also taught undergraduates and postgraduates in Mathematics, Economics and Business Studies, and I have helped students at the University of York with the MTE (Mathematical Techniques in Economics) and Microeconomics II exams. I have been an examiner for Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge Assessments (OCR).

Tutoring Approach:

I'm passionate about mathematics and I love teaching it. While I understand that students and their parents are usually looking for a tutor to improve their grades (and my students do get high grades and get into top universities) I also believe it's important to concentrate on understanding as well as learning. Exam success is greatly helped by understanding where the mathematics comes from and how it is used. My style is to make the subject as simple and as enjoyable as possible. My approach produces outstanding results: one of my students came to me in March of his A2 year with E's and U's in his mathematics modules. He resat his whole A level in June and was awarded an A* and got into his first choice university, Manchester, to read mathematics.

Personal Description:
I live in Crawley, West Sussex and have worked in social care since completing my BA(hons) in 2000. I have worked with many different client groups of all ages, spending the last few years in a training role. I am a foster carer to an older teenager and I am just about to start working as a lecturer at a local college.

I am a positive, approachable person who will work hard to help you (and your child) to succeed.

I have worked as a learning support assistant in adult education classes and have completed the introductory to teaching qualification (PTTLS) and the PGCE. I am working in a FE college in Surrey, teaching across levels 1 - 3. I have recently tutored children in literacy and numeracy (KS1 & KS2). I have delivered training to adults with mental health difficulties, adults and children with learning disabilities, trainee teachers, college students and staff who work in social care. I have done this in group settings and on a 1:1 basis. I have also spent time working with the foster children who have been placed with me to improve their academic achievements, in particular, with their reading and writing skills.

I have been graded as 'outstanding' in a recent teaching observation - Dec 2013 and am happy to provide evidence of this

Tutoring Approach:

Learning needs to be fun! I strive to make sessions enjoyable, memorable and interactive because I feel that this is the best way to learn. I like to use different learning methods in my approach and will regularly carry out assessment to monitor progress. Regular progress reports on will be available to you because it is important that you know how well you (or your child) are doing and any areas that need to be focused upon.

Sessions will be individually planned and delivered so best to meet your aims and aspirations. Depending on age and ability, I think it is important that students take responsibility for their own learning and I like to set independent work to be completed at home.

When working with children, I prefer to do this in their own home.

I will set homework and you need to set aside time during the week to back up the work we do in tutoring sessions. I can help you improve but the only person who can sit your exams is you so you need to be determined that you will do your best.

I have just finished a PhD in maths at Newcastle University so it goes without saying I'm enthusiastic about both maths and physics. On top of this I have a wide variety of interests, and this allows me to find ways of explaining things that the people I'm tutoring can relate to.

Teaching Experience:

While studying at Newcastle I've taken many tutorials for students taking courses in Maths. For the past 6 years I've also worked in a tutoring drop-in centre where any student at Newcastle University can come to ask maths questions. I've always enjoyed this work as over the course of a day I can be asked how to apply maths to many problems from mechanical engineering to fine arts!
