Personal Description:
I`m passionate about mathematics and I love teaching it. While I understand that students and their parents are usually looking for a tutor to improve their grades (and my students do get high grades and get into top universities) I also believe it's important to concentrate on understanding as well as learning. Exam success is greatly helped by understanding where the mathematics comes from and how it is used.

My philosophy is "more than higher grades". I believe it is not enough simply to do well at A level, students need to be given the tools to succeed at university. To that end I take a very full interest in their education generally. As one student recently put it, I am "so much more than just a maths tutor". For example I give guidance and support with university entrance, including the UCAS personal statement and Oxbridge applications and interviews.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for over twenty years, at top-ranking schools including Charterhouse in Surrey and Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, USA. I have been a full-time private tutor for over eight years, helping more than 200 students achieve higher grades in their exams. That's in excess of 6,000 hours of teaching.

I have taught almost every module in Mathematics and Further Mathematics for each of the four English A-level specifications (Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI). I have prepared candidates for the Oxford MAT exam and the STEP exam (for entry to Cambridge, Warwick and Imperial.) I have been an examiner for Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge Assessments (OCR).

I was a Kitchener Scholar at the University of Cambridge, where I was awarded an Entrance Prize by Trinity College and the Philpott Prize for a first class examination performance. I took a second degree with the Open University, where I won the Leslie Walshaw award for scoring 100% in the examination in Mathematical Models and Methods. (In fact, I achieved first class passes in every assignment and examination for every course I took throughout the degree.)

I believe strongly in the importance of lifelong learning and continuous professional development. I spent a year at the University of York studying second year Physics, where I also developed an interest in Economics (and have taught it at undergraduate level). I've grown my business skills as an Enterprise Fellow at York St John University, and I've taken examinations in accounting at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (I scored 92% in Financial Accounting). I'm motivated in part by personal interest, but also by the desire to be able to give my students better advice and better teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

My style is to make the subject as simple and as enjoyable as possible. My approach produces outstanding results: one of my students came to me in March of his A2 year with E's and U's in his mathematics modules. He resat his whole A level after three months tuition with me and was awarded an A* and got into his first choice university, Manchester, to read mathematics. In 2013, 70% of my students achieved an A or an A* in their exams.

My home is quiet and fairly minimalistic. Lessons are held in my offce and I have a computer and Ipad that students can use.

I use the first meeting to talk about any difficulties in learning the subject in a formal educational setting and discuss any specific learning difficulties you may have. We can chat about strategies to help you learn more effectively and I will work with you at a pace that suits you. I will also ask the student to complete a learning styles questionnaire.


To the best of my ability I try to make subjects interesting to young people and re-engage them. I also encourage students to bring along any work they may be struggling with so I can go through it with them. I can help you get to where you need to be. I have served as an assistant teacher, head of physics, head of science and head of faculty in comprehensive schools where my subjects have included all the sciences, seperate and combined, plus maths up to GCSE and Physics to A-level. I will be starting a Masters in Employment Law in September to further my knowledge in Human Resources. I have an Honours degree in Accounting and Business, PG Dip Human Resource Management and a CIPD qualification.

I lived in Indonesia for eight months where I taught English as a foreign language and after three months was promoted to teaching in an elementary school and teaching Business English at a bank. I have excellent communication skills and experience in working with children and young adults and making learning fun and stimulating.

Teaching Experience:

I have various experience in teaching children. At university I helped first and second year students with their assignments and revision for exams. While travelling in Peru I taught 5 year olds in a homework after school club. I also taught English as a foreign language for eight months at EF (English First) Indonesia, which is the world leading English language school. While I was there I taught Business English to Executives at an International bank and at an elementary school for one day a week to children aged 2 to 10.

Since returning to England I have tutored students who are following the national curriculum.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to find out how an individual likes to be taught and as long as I believe it is effective then I will teach in that style. I encourage individuals to attempt activities first before they decide they need help. Repetition in different ways is key to ensuring knowledge is being retained.

Having recently finished secondary school, I have an extensive knowledge of the education system and what is expected of students with regards to content and examination technique etc.

I feel I can relate to young students as I am not much older and have and still am going through the stresses and strains of exams! I understand how daunting Maths can be, as it certainly was for me when I was younger. However, one-to-one tuition may just be the catalyst that helps students 'click', and suddenly they understand this topic or can do this question.

I am undoubtedly competent in Maths, as shown by my results, and hope to show my students that they can improve their grades.

With the run up to those all-important exams, I can help students gain those crucial marks. I believe that to excel in Maths it is imperative that students practice, something which I can assist in.

Teaching Experience:

Have tutored students from a number of year groups and a range of exam boards including Edexcel and AQA.

Tutoring Approach:

I am open to the student's preferred style of learning and revision. I welcome specific queries and offer most help with exam questions. I can also explain whole topics if it was not picked up by the student at school or need further assistance.
Early on, lesson content will be largely dictated by the student until I uncover particular areas of weakness. Nearer to the exam period, emphasis will be on exam technique and working through past papers.

Teaching Experience:

The only experience I have with students was in my second year of college. In collaboration with the Maths department, I ran a peer mentoring session with first years every week. This was an hour long meeting in the library or a classroom with 5-6 students, where I would help them with topics they struggled with or go over some details from their lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important and effective way of learning is through practice of the subject. I would use the first part of a session to go over some important points to a topic and teach basic skills. Then put these into practice, going through questions, aided and unaided, including past paper questions.

My time working as a TA both in Birmingham and Liverpool enabled me to gain invaluable experience working with small groups of children teaching 'booster' groups to get children back to their nationally expected levels. This was a challenging yet rewarding experience as I was introduced to different approaches and methods so I can judge which approach will benefit each child I work with this included teaching a group of boys in years 1 and 2 to read.
During my teaching practice I worked in 2 schools in Peckham and also an autistic school in Tooting. Since qualifying I have worked as a year 5 teacher in Slough which was an extremely challenging experience with some difficult young boys who all responded to my teaching approach and I was able to build up a professional rapport, something that these boys had previously not had with other teachers. Since leaving there I have been working in a year 4 and 5 classes in Wanstead. This has been an enjoyable experience with a class with a wide range of abilities so has really stretched my teaching ability. Whilst here I have been working as a class teacher but also taking small groups of children and identified their weaknesses and work on them together which has had extremely successful results.
In my present school I am subject to regular teaching observations across Maths, English and Reading, where I am regularly graded good or outstanding, this coupled with a recent 'good' grading from Ofsted show that I have a broad subject knowledge range and provide engaging and motivational lessons. Having recently moved schools I have been promoted to Maths Curriculum leader and have an extensive knowledge of Maths across KS1 and KS2.

Tutoring Approach:

Since moving to London I have dealt with some extremely challenging behaviour from children based in Peckham, Slough and Wanstead. Through my time based in these schools I have built an extremely successful rapport with all children in class especially with young boys. I feel I am able to do this as I have a laid back demeanour that children don't feel threatened by but I demand instant respect and lay out my expectations of behaviour and attitude from the child from the start.
My approach to tutoring is mainly child led as I believe that a child learns best when they make discoveries of their own. I try to keep the actual teaching and talk to a minimum but will direct a child's thinking with some prompting and questioning if they are close to a break through. My main aim when teaching/tutoring is to promote confidence in a child's ability. All children have the capacity to learn some have mental blocks caused by lack of self esteem I aim to tackle this whilst showing the child easy steps and tips to complete tasks.
I feel I am an intuitive tutor who excels at finding unique and approachable ways to understand the student's needs and tailor the sessions to them specifically. As a classroom teacher at a diverse array of schools I gained substantial experience in educating children from a variety of backgrounds, and I believe I incorporate this experience when teaching individuals as well.

Teaching Experience:

I did tutor a fellow class student in A-level maths for a short period of time to improve his understanding of maths, especially pure maths. I also taught chemistry to university students in a university in Poland and was able to help about 70% to 80% of the whole year of first year medical students pass this subject. I provided them out of hours classes to help with certain difficult provided and even provided my own version of written revision notes to help prepare for the exam.

My approach to tutoring is to help the student understand the topic by giving examples and showing solutions with in-depth explanations in simple terms so that the student can understand. I even give the student example questions to try out to make sure they understand the methods or factual knowledge.
