Personal Description:
I am an experienced and qualified tutor - I have a mathematics PhD and have been tutoring at all levels (from GCSE through to undergraduate) for over a decade. I believe any student can become strong in maths with good tuition and a little work.

I'm also the author of Basic Maths For Dummies and Numeracy Tests For Dummies, and working on several more titles in the For Dummies range.

"I am planning on recommending Colin's tutoring to any of my friends who need help. He was patient and made the material easier to understand despite the fact that I hadn't taken math in years. I got a great grade too!"
- MC, Utah

Teaching Experience:

* Started tutoring GCSE maths while doing A-levels
* Tutored through university career
* Have always been complimented on my ability to make difficult ideas simple without patronising

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to encourage students to look at problems methodically and to help understand the ideas behind the theory by using simple, real-world examples. I teach that it's not just getting the right answer that is important, but understanding how you got there and knowing that the answer is right.

Lessons take place either online or at my classroom in Weymouth. Classes in your home are also possible, but there's a travel surcharge of at least 7 depending on where you are.

Personal Description:
I'm a 28 year old aerospace engineer working for Rolls-Royce with a real passion for teaching. All my life I have loved helping others to learn (my little sister can vouch for that!), and maths was always my favourite class at school. I have a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm for the subject and love passing it on and infecting other with the love of maths (my friends, however, think I'm mad!). I think the thing I love most about teaching is the realisation; the point when the 'penny drops' and the student gets a thrill out of learning. This is why I love tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I've had quite a broad range of teaching experience - firstly, I am a semi-professional salsa dancing choreographer, performer and instructor. A little different from classroom mathematics, yes, but the teaching principles of patience and encouragement are the same in all fields.

I started tutoring when I was at university and a friend asked if I would help one of her year-11 friends with her maths, and I was happy to oblige. This experience made me realise that I not only did I really enjoy it, I was actually quite good at it. She took her maths GCSE and came out with an A grade - her expected grade 6 months earlier was a C.
This experience lead on to me tutoring a year 9 boy for a year. His mediocre grades were pulled up to level 7 - entry level for higher exam papers.

That was 6 years ago and since then I have tutored many students, usually about 3 per year for various periods. My level of expertise ranges from year 9 all the way up to year 13 in maths, and up to year 11 in physics. Although I LOVE physics, I wouldn't be comfortable teaching A-level - with one exception - Nuclear & Particle physics. This was always my speciality - so if you have a niche need, I would love to help!

Tutoring Approach:

I adore the subject matter. My students have told me that my enthusiasm not only comes across when I teach, it actually rubs off on them. I aim to make my students LOVE their subject!

I feel that the best way to encourage a maths or physics student is for them to feel that they are really achieving something. Firstly allow them to explore the problem and see if they can work it out for themselves, then drip-feed them the/a method so they don't feel like they are being spoon-fed. Extrinsic goals (doing it for someone else) are nowhere near as powerful as intrinsic goals (doing it because you want to) - my aim is to make the student find maths/physics - dare I say - fun(!). Once the student realises implications of what they are doing, and how important this esoteric language is to the world it really opens their eyes and makes them realise this is part of a thing much bigger than the problem in front of them.

Another quality that is absolutely paramount in a tutor is patience. Sometimes students just don't "get it". It's times like these that a tutor's mettle is really tested. I have learnt that a good technique is firstly to repeat what you have explained, as if it's the first time, and then repeat it again, but from another angle. Alternatively, moving on to something else and coming back to the problem helps some students. The important factor is to remain patient and relaxed at all times. Be on their side. If you get frustrated then the student gets frustrated, and then you've failed as a tutor.

Personal Description:
I am a young actor living in London. I also write and direct poetry, plays and films. As my father was a Diplomat I spent much of my early life abroad: in Cuba, Hungary and the United States.

After studying Maths, English and Russian at Eton College I spent a year studying acting in New York and cooking in an English restaurant, then studied English and Drama at Bristol and have just finished a BA in Acting at LAMDA. When I'm not writing or in the theatre I'm in the kitchen experimenting.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored several students over the past two years in London. I have helped with English A-Level papers for a boy who got an A grade and will start at Bristol this autumn. I also taught essay-writing and exam technique to a girl who will be starting medicine at Cambridge this autumn.

I also have a lot of experience with learning difficulties as I have helped my younger brother all his studying life through his asperger's and dyslexia.

Tutoring Approach:

My inspiration to work in the arts always came from the books, films, artists and languages I studied at school and at university so I have a great amount of passion and interest in what I teach.

I believe this is very much the most important lesson for any new student to learn: a personal enjoyment and motivation for the subject. Exams are everywhere these days but it is important to remember that an exam is only a method for determining how much you know and if you can find yourself genuinely excited and eager to discuss what you know you are half-way to passing that exam.

Personal Description:
Hello,

My name is Mike and I am 26 years old. I currently work as a Primary Supply Teacher in Liverpool. I graduated from the Manchester Metropolitan University with a First Class Honours degree in Primary Education, and have taught in many schools across Liverpool and Manchester, and also in the United States.

I have a full DBS enhanced disclosure, and can provide a copy upon request, along with evidence of my completed degree and successful completion of the QTS Skills Tests in Mathematics and English.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught children from age 3 to age 14, but the bulk of my experience has been in Key Stage 2 (age 7-11). I have received very positive feedback from the schools I have worked in, and am regularly asked back to the same few schools every week. I have previous experience of tutoring on a 1:1 basis, most recently with a boy aged 5, focussing on phonics and early reading and writing skills. As a supply teacher, I have taught in many schools across the Northwest, and during my time at university, I spent five months studying and teaching in the USA.

Outside of teaching, I have worked at a children's summer camp in the United States for the past eight years, where I work as a Division Assistant with children from age 5 to 13.

I currently hold qualifications in Paediatric First Aid, CPR, AED and Epi-Pen.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in supporting children to master the basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics, to allow them to progress at higher levels at their own pace. It is important that any gaps in children's knowledge is filled as early as possible. This means that tutoring sessions will be tailored to the individual learner's needs.

For younger children, this may involve phonics and spelling games, practice with letter formation, and solving basic number problems. With older children, there would be more conversation to identify the skills they struggle with, and to set targets for their learning. This will enable children to take ownership of their learning and to feel positive about making steps towards achieving their targets.

Similarly, I believe it is important for more-abled learners to be challenged, giving them the opportunity to advance beyond the level of work they have access to at school. This can be especially crucial for children in Year 6, who may be working towards reaching a Level 5 or Level 6 in their SATs.

Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your child's individual needs.

Personal Description:
I'm an Optometry graduate from University of Manchester. As a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, I was educated in English at school in Malaysia and I learnt my mother tongue since when I was little. In addition, I have acquired Malay language as my third language throughout my academic life. In my past A Levels examination, I gained A* in Mathematics, and A in both Biology and Chemistry. I believe my academic achievement makes me a good fit in tutoring the subjects above.

Teaching Experience:

Tutored in Chemistry and Biology A Level in the past three years. Actively involved in peer to peer tutoring programme in A Levels as a Chemistry tutor in college for 1 year.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm willing to go through past exam papers and exercises as for Maths, Chemistry and Biology with students should they don't understand them and wouldn't mind to go extra mile to prepare notes and useful study skills for the students. I reckon that tutoring in a friendly manner would enhance learning process instead of forcing the student to do as said. Also, I believe that learning to speak Mandarin Chinese is easier when a student works with a native speaker as this allows the student to learn the correct pronunciation quickly. This would also be a good starting point if you want to learn basic Chinese language.

Personal Description:
After qualifying as a teacher, following a degree in Psychology at Loughborough University and a P.G.C.E. at Nottingham Trent, I completed my QTS at a small primary school in East Sussex.
In 2004, I moved to Spain to pursue my passion of living and working in a foreign country and I taught in a British school teaching the National Curriculum to a mixture of English and non-English speaking children.
Returning to the UK in 2008, I lived near Kingston-Upon-Thames and worked at Holy Cross Prep. School.
Currently, I am living in Goring with my husband and our 2 children.

Teaching Experience:

At Firle C. of E. School I taught a mixed class of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Although challenging, it showed me the importance of teaching to the individual child's needs.
At Runnymede College, Madrid I began teaching in the nursery, then I taught different classes and groups as a Key Stage One Support Teacher and in my final year I taught a Year 2 class. Learning Spanish helped me to empathise with the difficulties the non-English speakers faced.
During my 3 years at Holy Cross Prep. School I was a Year 2 class teacher. There was a high level of expectation for the academic achievement of the children. In my final year, an (ISI) inspection was carried out and the school was deemed to be 'outstanding'.
I have been working as a private tutor for the last 2 years, teaching a range of ages from year 1 to year 6.

Tutoring Approach:

I have found that a balance of structured work and fun, interactive, educational games, all based on a clear learning objective, leads to the best improvement in understanding. In addition, a good working relationship is essential in order to boost motivation and raise standards. Children learn best when they are interested in the subject matter. It is always beneficial to relate what is being taught to something that the child can connect with.
The first lesson will be an opportunity to learn what your child is capable of, therefore building up their confidence levels, before beginning to work on the areas where additional help is required.

Personal Description:
I am a 24 year old Primary PGCE student, with a range of experience working with children and young people. In particular, I have worked with children who experience barriers to learning and I enjoy aiding them to experience success in education. I am a fun but hard-working and reliable individual with a passion for working with children.

Teaching Experience:

Before embarking on my current course, I worked as a teaching assistant in both primary and post-primary settings. I provided support to children with English as an additional language and with special educational needs in both settings. I was responsible for planning, setting targets and assessment of the children I worked with. I also supervised a Homework Club, providing assistance to post-primary children in various subjects including children with special education needs and those who are gifted and talented. During this 2 year period, I tutored a number of children in the evenings on a one to one basis ranging in age from Year 1 to Year 6, and I developed very positive relationships with the families I worked with.

I have a degree in Speech and Language Therapy, and during university placements, often took on a teaching role working with children one-to-one or in small groups; assessing and delivering therapy in a child-centred approach. I have completed my first school placement for my PGCE course; I worked in a Year 1 class in which I observed and evaluated the class teacher, then taught lessons independently.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe using a child-centred approach is key to success. I consider what might interest and motivate the child in terms of resources and materials, and work at a pace appropriate for the child. It is important for the child to experience success but also to be appropriately challenged in order to reach their potential. I embrace a fun approach when working with children and would like to provide them with a positive learning experience.

Personal Description:
My career was spent in the computer industry and management consulting, mainly with Deloitte and Oracle.

Teaching Experience:

I have wide experience in private tutoring of Maths at GCSE and IGCSE Level. In the past year I have been giving 1-1 tuition to 15 students who attend schools in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge that use Edexcel and OCR Exam Boards. I have also given tuition to students who wish to refresh their "mental maths", gain a teaching qualification or gain entry to officer training in the Armed Services.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach depends partly on how near the Exam date is. If the date is some way away I will focus on teaching the topics the pupil identifies that they have difficulty with. In particular I like to go through what the pupil has been taught in class since my last tuition session to check that they understand it and can successfully tackle exam questions in the topic. As the exam date gets nearer I work through a checklist of every topic in the syllabus, and ensure I cover everything the pupil needs to understand to achieve their target Grade.

I have taught my classmates at College a number of times during my undergraduation. During my work stint at Broadcom, Bangalore, India, I used to volunteer at schools to teach Science and Computer skills. I currently volunteer with "e-learning for kids" - an online learning portal - to design interesting maths and science content for different age groups.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is lay a solid foundation and build any concept like a story. I try to make my class as interesting as possible by using real life examples/demonstrations as and when relevant. I ensure that my student gains the maximum out of the class.

Personal Description:
I am a student at the University of East Anglia and I am in the final year of my Master of Mathematics degree.

Teaching Experience:

I volunteered at the Denes High School as a Teaching Assistant in GCSE Mathematics for a semester. At the end of the semester I taught my own class successfully.

Tutoring Approach:

Hands on and adaptive. Whenever the pupil encounters a problem in their understanding I will work slowly and carefully to pinpoint whatever is causing the problem. I will then break down the problem to make sure the pupil fully understands how solve it independently. I would then set some similar problems as homework to solidify the pupil's understanding.

Personal Description:
A qualified teacher with a bachelors degree from the University of Warwick. A hard-working dedicated teacher of Maths in the Nottingham and Derby area.
Guaranteed to achieve the best possible results for all different boards in:
- GCSE
- AS, A2, A Level, etc.

Can also be flexible as to how far I travel to tutor. You can see my preference of 15 miles as an ideal not a limiting factor!

Teaching Experience:

I have over a years experience teaching maths in a secondary school in Long Eaton. I finished the School Direct training course last year and now have my first full-time teaching post. I currently teach maths to all year groups including A-Level Maths and Further Maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that for tutoring to be effective, the student must be motivated and have a desire to spend the time doing it. I take quite a relaxed approach and respond to the needs of the student dealing with any problems or difficulties understanding as they arise.

I prefer to work through a number of examples with the student addressing any misconceptions that may exist, before supporting them toward independent practice of questions around a given topic.

Above all, I want to create a relaxed atmosphere where the student can reach their full potential.
