Personal Description:
I have taught mathematics for nearly 20 years and enjoy keeping up to date with lesson delivery, maintaining a keen interest in how we learn mathematics. I a I now do some private tuition at home in addition to working in a secondary school. I am a positive forward thinking tutor and have a good sense of humour.
I am reliable and committed to my students' progress.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching full time for over 15 years with a careers worth of experience in secondary mathematics up to and including A levels.
I am currently employed to teach part time where my results are usually pleasing for my students. For instance, in 2011's performance management, 100% of students from a class surpassed their target levels significantly, including many with double and three times expected progress.
I also now teach privately for the rest of the week from my home (please view the map for location)
I have enjoyed teaching some very gifted students as well as those who find the subject quite a challenge.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach most levels of mathematics and use an intuitive approach wherever possible. It has been noted that I explain concepts quite clearly and students can be surprised at the ease with which they pick up previously difficult concepts. I

I also prepare students for exams and offer guidance on exam technique.

I use a mix of worksheets, discussion, web based work and text books. Past exam papers and examiners reports may be used for exam preparation.

Often I work to compliment a student's school mathematics, bringing them confidence and an increased ability to communicate and therefore participate in a classroom setting.

Personal Description:
I recently graduated with a Master's in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, having completed my BA at the University of Cambridge. I've been tutoring in Philosophy, Maths, Religious Studies/RMPS, Physics and Chemistry for the past five years, both in and out of schools. Ultimately, I hope to undertake undergraduate tuition, but at the moment I'm enjoying helping GCSE and A level students. I'm passionate about both academia and teaching - as much as I like to acquire knowledge myself, I find sharing it with others just as satisfying. My students have excellent success rates in achieving (or exceeding) their desired grades, and I try to make sure that they find the learning process as interesting as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I've taught students of a variety of ages and abilities, from Key Stage 3 Maths, through GCSE Science to Higher/A level Philosophy. I think that this has provided me with a good understanding of the needs of different students, and has allowed me to tailor my teaching style to each individual. I also have experience of teaching small groups of pupils and entire classes (at Basil Paterson Tutorial College and Middle School in Edinburgh, the Open Academy in Norwich, and at Hartismere High School in Suffolk), so I'm willing to offer joint tuition if this is desired by students.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't have a set approach to tutoring- I think it is of utmost importance to consider the individual requirements of the student. I therefore offer sessions of varying lengths according to the wishes of students, and discuss the aims of their tuition in the first session. After the first lesson, I compile a rough plan of work for future sessions, in accordance with the information given by the student. I generally favour a personal approach- verbal discussion of issues/arguments (in Philosophy) and problems (in Sciences), rather than endlessly setting exercises. I do, however, have access to various resources, and use these to supplement discussion where appropriate. I often set a small amount of homework to consolidate the work we've done in a session, but this will be discussed with the student. I've had very positive feedback on my approach to tutoring, and I hope that all my students find me clear, friendly and helpful.

Personal Description:
I hold a PhD in theoretical physics and have worked in the field of theoretical and computational physics for many years. I am fascinated by physics, mathematics and computer science and I aim to transfer this fascination to my students.

Teaching Experience:

I have a long standing experience in teaching and tutoring at all levels including GCSE, A-levels and university level. I have given one-to-one tuition since I was an undergraduate student. Many of my students have seen substantial improvements in their grades within one term of starting tuition.

Tutoring Approach:

It is my aim to support the student in regaining their interest and fascination in the subject. I perform thorough assessments on the student's comprehension of the subject and I base my courses on the outcome of these assessments.

By re-building the understanding from ground up a long term improvement is gained. This will be achieved alongside the revision of topics needed in upcoming exams for a more immediate improvement and motivation boost.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Philosophy from UCL, and am going to begin a teacher training course (PGCE) in September 2013.

I studied the International Baccalaureate in my final two years at school, and so understand the difficulties of balancing all your subjects- particularly when it comes to tackling the tricky bits.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for 3 years now, and have 6 pupils ranging from 7-16 years old. I have also worked as a teaching assistant in both mainstream settings and a Pupil Referral Unit.

I hold up to date Enhance DRB and DBS checks.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that good teaching is integral to students' learning. Having been a student recently, I am all too familiar with being in the situation where a teacher may be intelligent and passionate about their subject, but are not able to communicate and engage with students. I believe that engaging with the student and their method of learning is key to the student understanding the work.

In tutoring and I use constant encouragement and affirmation to support young people in their learning. I find this is particularly important when young learners have had difficult prior experiences of school. I use encouragement and constant reassurance to facilitate a greater understanding of each topic. In addition I find that it is crucial, especially with younger children to teach interactively and to make sure that they are actively participating in each task.

I strongly believe that, were possible, teaching should be about making things as simple as possible- and I have found that this is particularly important with children and young people who may find class work challenging. I have been able to do this through using drawings, diagrams and real life examples to engage young learners' interests. For example, I always teach fractions by referring back to the concept of cutting up a cake, and linking this to the function of the numerator and denominator.

Personal Description:
I have recently graduated from a Masters degree in drama at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English. Teaching has always been a great passion of mine and one to one tutoring is the most rewarding, in its opportunity for directness and specificity.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for three years and have also tutored drama in schools over the last few years. I have also had teaching experience abroad, teaching English as a foreign language in Indian and African schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make learning fun whilst also ensuring fast and effective progress. I ensure that I get to know my students' ways of learning as soon as possible in order to tailor my tutoring style to their individual needs. I hope to be able to offer a way of learning different but utterly beneficial to the current exam syllabuses which can often seem fairly daunting and rigid on first impression.

Personal Description:
I am friendly and approachable, whilst being an experienced chemistry teacher and A-level examiner. I encourage queries and questions whenever they arise and work with the student to find their optimal way of learning. This help to maxmise the potential of tuition time but also develops skills which can be used in revision at home.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced chemistry teacher and A-level examiner. I have been a private tutor in chemistry and maths since 2002 with excellent results and consistently good feedback. All students are welcome, whether working towards first-time examinations, resits, or needing support and confidence through the course. As well as teaching and supporting all areas of A-level and GCSE chemstry, I spend time with students on study skills, revision technique and exam technique. These are areas which are given little attention in schools but are central to student's success and the development of their potential.

VACANCIES AVAILABLE! I have extended my availability for private tuition so currently have two extra slots for chemistry students. Quick response promised. GETTING WORRIED ABOUT YOUR EXAMS? Don't worry, there is still time. Please contact me so we can discuss the best way to help you.

Private tutor (chemistry, maths) - 12 years
Chemistry and maths lecturer - 8 years
External A-level chemistry examiner - 11 years

Tutoring Approach:

Both my private tuition and work as a teacher have benefitted from my work as an external examiner for AS chemistry, on-going since 2004. This gives me an invaluable insight not only in terms of subject knowledge but also towards exam preparation and technique. I can therefore assist with a variety of extremely useful tips and pointers towards revision and taking exams, including, for example, key word-pairs guaranteed to improve answers.

I am happy to tutor both individuals and groups of 2-4. I recommend 1hr teaching sessions for GCSE and 1 - 1.5 hours for A-level. I am friendly and approachable, encouraging queries and questions whenever they arise. I am happy to provide past papers and other materials as necessary and can do longer or more frequent lessons around exam time, if required.

Personal Description:
I am available to give one to one Mathematics and Physics tutorials to those wishing to expand their skills and their understanding in these subjects. These tutorials can include all levels: KS3, GCSE, AS and A levels. My tutorials can be in person or delivered through Skype. I'm happy to take any student from to those struggling to pick up the basic concepts to those high flying through the course and wish to take their mathematics a stage further.

Teaching Experience:

After completing my Masters of Computer Science at Oxford University, I continued to study for a further year to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for 11 to 18 year old in Mathematics. Since then I have been teaching Mathematics at a specialist secondary school for those with special educational needs, most common of which being dyslexia.

In my last set of tutees, the majority of my students obtained two grades higher than they performed six months previously - taking one person doing Physics from a D at AS level to a B.

Tutoring Approach:

Many teachers see tutoring as teaching, but with only one student in the classroom. This idea misses the advantages one to one tutoring has. One to one tutoring allows a substantial dept of understanding to be gained which is difficult to achieve in the classroom. This is achieved in tutorials by giving the tutee the space to learn and the time to learn. Space to learn means the tutor asking frequent questions tailored to the individual that are short, clear and non-leading. Time to learn, gives the tutee time to think and calculate answers to such questions.

Personal Description:
I am currently a fourth year medical student at Addenbrookes Hospital and Queens' college, Cambridge. I achieved a first class in my second year coming 39th out of 340 students. I graduated last year with a BA Cantab. I offer tutoring in Biology and Physics up to A-Level / Advanced Higher level and Chemistry and Maths to GCSE. I live in Cambridge and have my own transport. My own academic interests are in Pathology and Physiology. During the summer of 2012 I will be involved in a UCL project looking at genetic adaptation involved in pregnancy at altitude in Nepal. I am very enthusiastic and enjoy teaching, so that I can pass on some of my enthusiasm and knowledge to others so that they can succeed. I have always been dedicated to achieving high academic goals and am very approachable and friendly.

I am available during my university holidays:
2012-13 Summer: -------> 2 Oct
Christmas: 30 Nov 15 Jan
Easter: 15 Mar 23 Apr
Summer: 14 Jun ------->

2013-14 Summer: -------> 8 Oct
Christmas: 6 Dec 14 Jan
Easter: 14 Mar 22 Apr
Summer: 13 Jun ------->

Teaching Experience:

Last year I tutored 5 different students at GCSE level in science and maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to:
1.) Inspire my students to set high academic goals and to achieve them.
2.) Provide high quality teaching in a way that makes the subject matter interesting.
3.) Give guidance on learning and revision techniques in order to instill confidence and discipline in studying.

In more detail:
1.) I believe that, given a stimulating learning environment, a disciplined approach to learning and exam preparation and confidence in one's abilities, most students reading science courses should be able to attain goals that may seem challenging at first. Having recently experienced the sharp end of university application procedures I feel that I am also in a good position to offer advice and guidance on higher education applications (particularly medical applications), including interview preparation and personal statement advice.

2.) I aim to teach underlying concepts and principles as a priority. A basic grasp of these allows finer detail to be added on top and avoids the large amounts of learning by rote that is sometimes associated with science courses. I will also, wherever possible, try to extend students' interest beyond the syllabus, as enthusiasm for a subject is a huge step on the way towards academic success.

3.) Just as the understanding of science subjects requires good application of underlying themes, learning and revision can be greatly improved by a structured approach. I aim to pass on study skills that I have learnt myself as well as spend time, if a particular examination is forthcoming, focusing on exam technique.

Personal Description:
I am currently a maths undergraduate at UCL. I am a highly intelligent, enthusiastic and committed individual, and I have a passion for teaching while seeing the progress of my students. I believe every student can achieve the top grades by the right methods of teaching which I have, and I always try my best helping the students to reach their maximum potential.

Teaching Experience:

I have voluntarily helped running the weekly maths club of the lower school when I was in sixth form, and run weekly mandarin lessons.

Also currently I am also tutoring a group of 11+ students maths and science at a Saturday school. I plan the material of lessons, set and mark the homework and set regular tests to monitor the group progress.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a different approach depending on the need and individual case of the student. And I do care about my student's wellbeing of learning because I am a student myself. Generally I would love to trigger the interest of my students, make the knowledge fun to learn; also I try to build a general picture of how different topics link together and sometimes I like to challenge my students to an upper level, so they can do better at exams.

Personal Description:
Gabriel is currently a second-year LLB Law (Hons) at the University of Manchester.
He is a foreign student from Singapore and is ethnic Chinese.

Other than being proficient in English, he is fluent is Mandarin and Cantonese. He is also learning Spanish at the moment (intermediate DELE B1).

After completing his A Levels in 2008, he spent 22 months performing mandatory military service in Singapore before embarking on his tertiary education in law at the University of Manchester.

He counts reading and running as his past times. Gabriel has taken part in a mixture of endurance events and his most satisfying accomplishment is the completion of a 100KM Ultramarathon.

Teaching Experience:

Gabriel was a relief teacher for 3 months at Ngee Ann Primary School (Singapore).
Over there, he taught students from the age of 7 to 12.

His teaching subjects there included English, Mathematics, Mandarin, Science and Physical Education.

Gabriel studied English, Mandarin, Mathematics, Geography, History, Economics for his Cambridge University A Levels in 2008.

Tutoring Approach:

Gabriel believes in having a personable tutoring style, which would enable the tutee to feel at ease so that he or she would feel comfortable with raising any questions or requesting to repeat a point.

Interaction would be at the heart of the tuition sessions as this would allow the tutee to have the chance to speak more (English or Mandarin), which would allow him or her to have a chance to practise as well as for Gabriel to identify any possible mistakes with his or her spoken capability.

Since Gabriel is fluent in English, there would not be any communication problems during Mandarin sessions.

Personal Description:
I'm a qualified teacher with experience in tutoring students from GCSE to undergraduate level. I received a Physics degree from Cardiff University, before getting married and moving to Sheffield to do my teacher training and a PhD.

Throughout this time I have been involved in teaching and tutoring, whether more formally in schools and at Sheffield University, or more informal private tuition to GCSE students and an engineering undergraduate.

My teaching seeks to develop understanding, whilst being enjoyable, and generally includes practical activities as well as written and oral work. In this respect I have spent many sessions in primary schools, secondary schools and public spaces (including the Winter Gardens, Sheffield) doing public Science teaching, demonstrations and promotions. This has helped me learn how to help everyone understand various aspects of Maths and Science, regardless of background or age.

Outside of teaching and tutoring I enjoy cycling and getting out into the Peak district.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst completing my teacher training I taught students from 12-18 and across the ability spectrum in all three Sciences.

Since then I have been involved in delivering tutorials and lectures at Sheffield University to undergraduate students in Physics and Maths. During this time I have privately tutored both undergraduate and GCSE students.

Tutoring Approach:

I vary my approach to tutoring depending on the needs, ability and age of the student, but in all cases I'm patient, friendly and encouraging.

When there is sufficient time, students are encouraged to complete some diagnostic work to establish both their ability and confidence across the curriculum. This allows the tutorials to be planned appropriately for each specific student.

Just before the exam, exam technique help and troubleshooting can make a significant difference to the students performance and confidence, even with just one or two sessions.

Personal Description:
I am a Spanish postgraduate student doing a MSc in Paleobiology at the University of Bristol, where I currently live. I mainly have anl academic background in Biology (BSc in Biology + MSci in Evolutionary Biology) and I am now expanding my studies in the field. Hopefully I will starting my PhD studies the next Autumn Term.

Teaching Experience:

I have more than 5 years of experience as a private tutor both for Spanish and English students of all ages (from 7 to 30). However, most of them of them were in their teens and first years of University. I have managed also in a satisfactory way tutoring with students with special learning needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe in a relaxed and pleasant teaching environment as the process of learning is controlled in an essential proportion by motivation and emotional mood. Additionally, I am really keen in Science, and in particular actually passionate about Biology. Therefore, as I have also good communicative skills, I feel I can transmit this passion to my students.

Lately, I have become really keen on languages as I am basically living a daily cultural interchange in UK. As a native speaker of Spanish, I could teach the language in a thorough way and virtually managed any level the student may have.

Personal Description:
I am 32 years old and have been tutoring 1-1 since I was in A Levels, I have helped nearly 100 different students to date and some of those have seen drastic improvements in their performance and self confidence - changing their lives and their options completely.

Teaching Experience:

Six years tutoring 1-1 full time, mostly GCSE and A Level, though I have tutored age 7 up to adults returning to gain specific qualifications.

I have tutored students with severe dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, with excellent results.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to treat each student as an individual, no matter what the reasons for the tuition. I listen to the student and build a solid relationship over time. By establishing trust and respect with my students, I can effectively communicate any material, however simple or complicated it may be.

My degree in Astrophysics involved highly advanced mathematics and has enabled me to understand maths and physics of any level, combining this with years of 1-1 tuition which enables me to communicate that understanding to someone else at any level, this makes me a very effective tutor.

Personal Description:
I have lived in Lancaster for almost 14 years. I came to University in this city and never left. I live with my husband and two crazy kittens. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, stitching, science fiction and fantasy movies and tv shows and keeping fit (I work out and swim twice a week).
I have a BA in English (2:1) and an Masters in Literary Studies. However, I get the most satisfaction out of teaching maths.

Teaching Experience:

Qualified with PGCE in Secondary English, Qualified Teacher Status awarded 2007
Qualified Teaching and Learning Skills (QTLS) awarded 2013

Last OFSTED grade: Graded Good (2) with elements of Outstanding (1) practice

2010 - 2011
Worked on an army training preparation course teaching English functional skills to troubled and disadvantaged teenagers who were aiming to join the armed forces.

2011 - 2012
Taught maths and English basic skills qualifications to adults in various work places

2012 - present
I work full time as a tutor for adults, teaching the maths and English functional skills aspects of adult apprenticeships in Health and Social Care.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to work one to one, focusing on building up confidence and security. I have worked with some very nervous learners and some who have had negative teaching experiences in the past.
I use minimal ICT, I prefer the old fashioned methods of paper and pencil. I design most of my own resources, based on the functional skills idea that maths and English should be relevant to the person who is learning'.

I strongly believe that there is no such thing as 'bad at maths'. The people I have tutored have not previously been taught in a way that works for them.

Many of my learners have gone on to higher education, have started their own businesses and have passed competency tests in maths for EYPS, Teacher Training and Nursing Degree courses.
