I find I learn best by attempting to understand a concept fully and by placing it in a relevant context, rather than by learning off by heart. I would hope to help a tutee learn by these methods. I think that learning the context and relevance of a concept can make a subject more interesting, and hence more memorable.

Tutoring Approach:

The main purpose of one to one tuition is to diagnose and address gaps in a child's learning and any misconceptions which may be deep rooted. It also provides a powerful opportunity to address personal and internalised processes and involves equipping the learner with appropriate strategies, new ways of thinking about a problem.
My first task is to find out from the parent/s what are their concerns about their child and what they are expecting. After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. I have many hobbies but particularly enjoy outdoor pursuits including: sailing, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking and running. Most of my free time though is spent with my wonderful husband and beautiful tots!

Teaching Experience:

During my time researching at Oxford, I tutored an array of students in Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, Human Science and Medicine.

I have vast tutoring experience at both GCSE, AS/A2 level covering all UK exam specifications, including IB.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring style is informal, working with each student to improve their approach to learning whilst maintaining motivation. At the end of the day, learning should be fun!

Hi, I'm Jared, an enthusiastic 22 year old recent graduate with a first class degree in Biomedicine. I have been learning biology and life sciences for the past 10 years and hope to continue when I start a neuroscience masters. Having not stopped starting secondary school I am educated in all three sciences including maths up to GCSE level, chemistry and maths up to AS level and Biology to A level, and am confident at providing tuition in all of these areas.

Currently I am going over A level maths and chemistry and wouldn't hesitate to provide tutoring in these areas if needed. Additionally I am on the receiving end of tuition, having started learning German and am looking at starting BSL lessons in the near future.

Based in the Basildon area, I am able to travel within the local area using either my quick set of legs, my somewhat rusty mountain bike or good old public transport. I am free throughout the daytime at both weekdays and weekends, however my weekdays are likely to be filled soon, but evening tuition is not a problem

Teaching Experience:

Previously I have mentored several students who struggled with their GCSE maths and science and required the necessary C grades to gain entry into College. Whilst at university I helped local A level biology and/or chemistry students gain top grades by filling in any gaps in their knowledge and clarifying parts of the curricula they were not confident with.

Job wise, I am pursuing a teaching assistant position and currently volunteer in a local school science department, where I help prepare for science lessons and assist in demonstrations. As a result I am still in the know how regarding exam boards curriculum

Tutoring Approach:

My approach focusses on restoring confidence and making sure students maintain high expectations. I find exposure to exam papers, although thankfully not in such strict conditions, is incredibly effective in preparing students for their exams and helps overcome those pesky exam fears. Knowing the curricula is great by marks on exam papers matter, and it is a great feeling to know that when you sit the exam you know what to expect and how to answer correctly.

As science is a visual subject I try to add as many practical and integrative elements to my tutoring, which I find makes the subject matter much more memorable and less dry.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe strongly that no two people learn in the same manner; while some respond well to repeat readings by themselves, other people learn well through lecturing and taking notes. It's fundamental to get an understanding of this before commencing tutoring, personally i liked having spoken word followed up by practice exam questions to apply the knowledge.

Second to actually tutoring the academic aspects of science, I emphasise the importance of good exam technique. A large part of any tutoring would be aimed at ensuring the student understands what an exam question is asking and what is relevant in response - a sound knowledge with knowing how to apply it is a key to success.
