Teaching Experience:

some tutoring experience and I have spent a number of years both learning and working in an academic environment, which required working within groups of fellow students, completing learning activities, developing presentations and explaining concepts to those requiring further insight.

Tutoring Approach:

I find I learn best by attempting to understand a concept fully and by placing it in a relevant context, rather than by learning off by heart. I would hope to help a tutee learn by these methods. I think that learning the context and relevance of a concept can make a subject more interesting, and hence more memorable.

I also find breaking down work into manageable chunks and using various techniques (colour coding, acronyms etc.) can assist memory, and my background in Psychology means I have some understanding of how to apply these.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently providing 1:1 numeracy and literacy tuition in two Leeds schools. This involves one hour per child for a 10 week programme. I also run private tuition lessons from my own home or visiting children.

Prior to this I worked from February 2000- September 2010 at Gateways School, Harewood, Leeds an independent school for girls. I was a form teacher for years 3,4,5 and 6 but specialised in RE and Latin.

Tutoring Approach:

The main purpose of one to one tuition is to diagnose and address gaps in a child's learning and any misconceptions which may be deep rooted. It also provides a powerful opportunity to address personal and internalised processes and involves equipping the learner with appropriate strategies, new ways of thinking about a problem.
My first task is to find out from the parent/s what are their concerns about their child and what they are expecting. I would provide details of my extensive experience in providing 1:1 tuition and the success of achieving a programme that suits the individual needs of the child. A programme of lessons would be planned and then delivered using the following lesson format: -
*sharing objectives and learning outcomes with the child,
*identifying the pupils' knowledge, strategies and skills,
*modelling the process to be developed by talking it through,
*allowing the pupil to explore the activity independently as I observe and interact identifying the strengths and areas of misconception for attention and discussion
* revise the work, refining the child's knowledge, understanding and skills
* provide an opportunity to consolidate learning through further practice and discussion
* child reflects on the progress made towards the learning objective, the strategies used and how the skills and knowledge can be applied back in the classroom
*set targets

I would plan a range of varied activities to engage the pupil and support learning. I would provide opportunities for the pupil to talk, rehearse ideas and ask questions. The key to good practice is to praise successes to boost self confidence. I have a thorough understanding of what the pupil needs to be able to do to move forward.

Personal Description:
As a scientist I have had extensive experience of teaching in an academic and lab environment, alongside interactive science at festivals and museums. I have always enjoyed teaching and I am passionate about igniting curiosity about science in those whom I teach. I have worked on a professional and voluntary basis with children from primary school age all the way up to Masters degree level.

Science can be a daunting subject and I appreciate the need to build confidence by tailoring explanations to different levels of understanding, and different types of personality.

My own scientific knowledge comes from understanding a topic rather than parrot-fashion memorising, I believe this is the best long-term learning method and therefore I will use this approach where possible with my students by building up from the basics.

I am very supportive of questions as working in the scientific field has taught me that there are no stupid questions and I think that learning is more efficient when a student enjoys what they are being taught. I also like to incorporate every day examples as I believe this can make science topics come alive and become relevant to an individual.

Teaching Experience:

- Private Tuition (2013): Last summer I tutored two year 10 students in GCSE level chemistry, both of which had a notable increase in their grades. One student after only 1 month of tuition made the remarkable achievement of an increase in grades from 34% to 64%.
- Work Experience Weeks (2005-current): I have supervised 16 A-level/undergraduate students for a work experience week. This involves tours of the labs, explanation of the science behind certain experiments and how drug development works (with written materials), as well as supervision of experiments.
- MSc Workshop (2011-2014): I created materials and helped run a workshop in Protein Modelling for the UCL MSc Drug Design course.
- Cancer Research UK (2011): Made a video and helped the Science Communication team create an interactive game to help the public understand how drugs bind into proteins.
- Volunteer Usher at Cheltenham Science Festival (2008-current): In groups I have helped supervised school classes doing experiments such as making a hot air balloon from tissue paper, drawing organs on a t-shirt (primary school), extracting DNA from a strawberry, making paper model DNA and using chemistry modelling equipment (secondary school)
- Cardiff Science Week (2004-2007): Supervised students with various science exhibits such as fishing for insects from a pond (primary school) and making a cell from a balloon and popping it to look at the inside of the cell (secondary school).
- Science Writing (2008-current): Writing articles at Cheltenham Science Festival, for London Science Museum and the Royal Society (for non-scientists and Children) has greatly improved by ability to write materials for tutoring. I have a portfolio if you are interested in this work.

Tutoring Approach:

As well as the approach I discussed above I also provide and create my own teaching materials with visual and interactive aids. I prefer to familiarise myself with the school syllabus so I can tailor my tutoring to the pupil's needs.

For any older pupils I can also offer advice on careers as well as help with CVs/applications to university.

I can also on request do small fun "kitchen" experiments to inspire interest and excitement in science.

Teaching Experience:

I spent the last year (2012/2013) tutoring a French boy - 12 years old - who just arrived in England, therefore not able to speak English at all. After one month of my tutoring, he was able to successfully pass the admission test at the local Grammar School.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is mostly about communication.
When tutoring, I make a point in being the most clear and open-minded as possible, to make it not just easy, but also entertaining to learn the daily lesson.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my PhD in neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. My studies culminated in the generation of a new model of decision making. This work has recently been accepted by the Journal of Neuroscience and, subject to review, will be published in Summer 2014. It is my genuine hope that this new model will be accepted as the standard textbook model and help contribute to our understanding of a number of neurological disorders.
