| Personal Description: I am a PhD student in Archaeology and I have an MSc in Archaeology, an MA in Classical Archaeology, and a BA in Anthropology/Sociology with a minor in Religious Studies. I have been teaching and tutoring a range of humanistic subjects for more than 10 years. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching at university since 2003. I have taught Greek and Latin language, English, Archaeology, History and the Humanities. I have also done tutoring in Greek, Latin, Archaeology and History and have taught special university outreach courses to A-level students in Classics. |
Tutoring Approach: I am used to tutoring both one-on-one and in small groups and am comfortable tutoring a wide range of ages and academic levels. I am happy to let students set the tutoring agenda or I can construct a progressive learning plan to achieve student goals. I actively monitor student growth and give feedback that allows the student to target weaknesses. I work to create stimulating learning situations that allow the student to approach their subject from a new direction. I aim to incorporate larger academic skills, such as writing and researching skills, into the instruction of specific subjects. |

| Personal Description: I have recently graduated from Cambridge University and I'm now spending a year living in Cambridge. I want to become a teacher but not yet, as I want to gain some life experience, something I think is vital in a teacher. I am a vivacious happy person and I really enjoy life and meeting new people. I very much enjoy spending time with children and I go into help at my Mum's primary school whenever possible. I have various hobbies but mainly I like spending my time singing in choirs, sailing or on the hockey pitch. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent a good deal of time working alongside my Mum in the speech and language section of the primary school at which she works. I do not have any formal academic teaching experience but I have had both an active and passive role in the classroom when I have gone into the school. I spent two years coaching a boys Under15 hockey team whilst I was at school and gained a great deal of experience in how to motivate people to achieve their best. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that, when it comes to private tutoring, encouragement and fun are the key elements. If a private tutor is required it is perhaps because they pupil is not getting as much out of the classroom as they need. As a tutor I would try to counteract the formulaic nature of classroom lessons by approaching the work in a way that makes it interesting, appealing and good fun. Relating the work to current affairs and making connections that the younger student will understand leads to an increased interest which fosters encouragement and achievement. |

| Personal Description: I am an 19 year old girl studying a BA in Classics at the University of Oxford tutoring as a summer job. I'm very dedicated and friendly, and believe that I'm very much in touch with children and teenagers, and hence very suited to tutoring. I'm highly academically adept in both arts and sciences - achieving 5 A-grades at A-level in Classical Greek, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Critical Thinking, an A-grade at AS-level in Further Mathematics, and 13 A*-grades at GCSE. I'm very well qualified to teach what I offer, and confident that I really understand my subjects. |
Teaching Experience: Although I've never had any formal tutoring experience, I used to be a voluntary helper for GCSE Maths Classes when I was in Sixth Form, at Nonsuch High School for Girls, Cheam. This involved attending a GCSE class once a week, finding out which students were struggling and in what areas, explaining concepts they didn't understand, and guiding them through difficult questions. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a highly flexible approach to tutoring: after all, each child has a different attitude to learning, different needs, and different abilities. I am both very patient and very creative, thus I'm willing to persevere and try different methods of teaching to suit their needs. Most importantly, however, I believe that a tutor should always have a genuine enthusiasm for teaching, and a genuine interest in learning. This is exactly what I instinctively possess, and what I hope to pass on to others. |

| Personal Description: I read Classics at Magdalen College, Oxford, then taught English in Greece. Since then, I've been tutoring full-time in London. |
Teaching Experience: I taught English as a Foreign Language in Halkida, Greece from September 2007 to June 2008. This was mainly classroom teaching, but I also did some private tutoring, which I enjoyed very much. I've now been tutoring full-time for over a year in London, teaching a variety of subjects to students of all ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I've been told that I'm very friendly and approachable. I think tutoring works best in a relaxed environment, and I try to ascertain exactly what the student wants to get out of the lessons, and tailor them accordingly. |

| Personal Description: I'm a three-fold graduate of Oxford University: I studied Classics as a first degree, followed by a Masters in Ecclesiastical History, and am now finishing my Doctorate in Early Modern English History. This has given me a wide range of interests and specialist knowledge, as well as an insight into the (sometimes unexpected) connections between classics, history, and theology. |
Teaching Experience: I have done a reasonably large amount of informal tutoring - helping undergraduates prepare for exams or with specific problems. In addition to this, I have also done a smaller amount of teaching for various tutorial colleges, including revision courses for both GCSE and A-Level. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a firm believer that studying solely for examinations is a wasted opportunity. To access the highest levels of analysis, the student must have an appreciation of the wider issues and context, and this is something that I am most keen to encourage. However, that can only come with a firm grasp of the basic principles of any discipline, so that remains a first priority. |

| Personal Description: I am a 23 year old male postgraduate-student, doing my LL.M in European Law. My native language is German and I have visited advanced courses in Latin (i.e. I have learnt that language for 7 years). Friends and colleagues describe me as friendly, hard-working and reliable. |
Teaching Experience: I have several years of experience in teaching Latin - I have tutored sucessfully 4 students in that language. |
Tutoring Approach: My experience shows that the reason why so many students have problems especially with Latin is that many students lack a reliable system for translation. I have always explained a system to my students with which every sentence can be translated. Latin is much easier when one has understood the system behind that language. |

| Personal Description: I am a tutor because of my first degree, in Classics, and because of my Austrian family connection and the many summers spent in Austria; and because of the advantages I had also with french at school, in that three of my four teachers were Fr nationals. I have worked in Austria and have translated from these two langs for book publishers. |
Teaching Experience: Secondary exper in two schools, in Latin, and Latin and Greek teaching. Sixth form and Further Ed teaching. Vacation secondary teaching in Austria Tuition since my own student days. |
Tutoring Approach: Somewhat Socratic in that I expect the pupil to make the maximum use of what he d o e s know, and then add to that. I believe in going from the known to the unknown. By using "word families" etc I help the pupil to snowball on further vocabulary etc to his existing store. I think the pupil must understand the nuts and bolts of languages- the mechanics and dynamics, ie must grasp grammar and syntax as far as possible for his age etc. |

| Personal Description: I am a young and enthusiastic Classicist working on a PhD in Latin Literature at the University of Reading. I am interested in a broad range of aspects of the Ancient World, and particularly in sparking the interest of other people in my subject. I am passionate about continuing to promote Latin and Classics at school level and encouraging its promotion as a fulfilling subject for undergraduate study. I am therefore using all opportunities offered my PhD to encourage other Classics learners, including taking up all teaching opportunities in the department, participating in teaching and learning workshops to improve modes of outreach, taking my research into schools and taking undergraduates to Rome. |
Teaching Experience: I am relatively new to tutoring but am teaching Latin to A-level standard on a one to one basis. I am also due to start teaching Latin epic and language at the University of Reading. As part of the Researchers in Residence scheme I also take my research into a secondary school to a variety of year groups and am involved in their learning. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to Latin teaching focuses on a crucial understanding of grammar from an early stage. However, I do not separate this from texts and try to start pupils reading passages from an early stage, moving on as soon as possible to ancient texts. For more advanced pupils I believe it is just as important to interpret the text as a whole rather than merely on the basis of word by word translation, not least within some understanding of its ancient context. I am, however, very happy to tailor all teaching to the specific requirements or weaknesses of a pupil. |

| Personal Description: I am 22 and I recently graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, where I achieved a first class honours degree in languages (Russian, Latin, Ukrainian). I'm from Manchester originally, where I went to the Manchester Grammar School. I'm currently working as a freelance literary translator and playwright in London. I speak fluent Russian, and I lived in Russia and Kyrgyzstan in 2008 as part of my degree. I also speak French (I have an A-level), Ukrainian and Kyrgyz. As a writer and playwright, I love literature, and would also be able to teach English Lit or History (my other A level). |
Teaching Experience: I taught Latin for a year in an inner city primary school in Manchester in 2005. I taught English at the Kitezh Children's Community in the Kaluga region of Russia (January-February 2008) |
Tutoring Approach: I'm generally very flexible, and would tailor my tutoring to the wants and needs of each specific tutee. In terms of languages I'm a great believer in learning through literature. It's an amazing insight into the culture as well as a greater booster for vocabulary. For beginners I'd use nursery rhymes, and the texts would increase in complexity according to the standard of the tutee. Homework for languages would normally be grammar-based exercises, which are the cornerstone of inflective languages like Russian or Latin. Conversation practice is, again, essential, but as I said earlier I'd be happy to work on whatever areas in which the tutee felt themselves to be weakest. |

| Personal Description: As cliched as it might sound, I want to teach as I find it extremely rewarding. I truly love learning and have a great passion for both my academic subjects and external intellectual interests, which I feel is the main source of my academic prowess. The potential prospect of bringing about or nurturing such passion in a student excites me deeply. I participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities I put large effort into, including debating, drama and charitable enterprise, which I feel have developed me as a person and allow me to communicate much better with other people. I also extend my passion for the intellectual to a vast quantity of reading books and publications of all sorts, and writing fiction, drama, poetry and journalism. This is part of what defines me as a person and has certainly assisted me in attaining an offer from Oxford University. |
Teaching Experience: I regularly mentor younger students in my school as a form mentor and assist them with their schoolwork. I have taught several full English classes in my school for years eight to ten, for which I have received great positive feedback from the students and supervising teachers. I regularly coach and judge inner-school debating, which involves high-levels of analytic and communicative skill invaluable for academic subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that there are two areas of teaching. Learning and passing exams. There is a common misconception that these two are one and the same. They are not. Learning involves appreciating, understanding and hopefully enjoying a subject. Passing the exam involves acknowledging the correct hoops to jump through. This is an unfortunate but true fact in the current educational climate. In my tutoring I seek to achieve both for students. For learning, what is most important is to engage with the subject and to find something enjoyable within it. I believe that finding what most appeals to the students natural abilities and enhancing that will bring about a greater appreciation for the subject as a whole, which will allow the student to learn what is necessary with much more rigour, involvement and enjoyment. When it comes to passing and doing well in exams, it must be remembered that the examiners are looking for very specific criteria to be fulfilled and, in the majority of cases, this is all that is necessary (although not preferable). Learning as I described above is still a much more effective method for a student to achieve academic success and I will strive to make sure that all my students learn in such a fashion as much as I can, but for those less confident in a certain subject, getting through the exam can be made much easier by clear demonstration of what the mark scheme and curriculum specify. I feel that there is sometimes a confusion in school teachers' teaching between learning the subject and passing the exam for it. By making a clear distinction, the process can be greatly simplified and exam success can be much easier with focused practice and effort. |

| Personal Description: I'm 23, white British male, currently studying for a Masters in Ancient History at UCL, having completed my undergraduate degree in the same subject. I grew up in Cambridge, where I also went to school, and now live in central London. My two main hobbies are music and rowing: I play piano and organ to diploma level, and have coxed, coached and rowed for 6 years. During my degree I was heavily involved in Drama and Musical Theatre Societies and I directed the Bloomsbury Musical of the Year. I'm happy to teach French, Ancient History, music and music theory, and if needed, University admissions. |
Teaching Experience: As well as Latin and Greek, I also learnt Egyptian heiroglyphs and Babylonian cuneiform which can give a tutee a valuable insight into the primary literature in Ancient History, and gives me a very strong grasp of grammar. UCL is in the top 6 Universities in the World, so I have had expert tuition throughout the my own education. I studied French during my degree, and can teach up to at least GCSE. My best experience has been learnt from coaching rowing for 4 years in Australia and England at 3 different schools to all levels and ages of school children, specialising in technique. This has given me considerable experience in both individual and group teaching of a technical and complex subject. I am diploma level piano and organ, have some experience teaching both, and am happy to teach them again along with music theory if needed. |
Tutoring Approach: I am most comfortable with individual tutoring to give a personalised and informal approach to learning. For shorter problems I prefer to encourage them towards the right answer through leading questions and, if necessary, some level of explanation. For essays and longer questions, I ensure the tutee knows the fundamental basics, before laying out some key points and building up a final answer. At no point would I wish to spoon-feed answers to a tutee - I would rather they fully understood the problem, even if that meant a degree of discussion and some explanation of other areas. I would expect some level of preparation, usually reading or a small amount of memorising before each class. |

| Personal Description: I began the study of Latin and Ancient Greek (language and literature) when I was 13 years old in Italy. In Rome I took my degree in Classical Archaeology and I completed my education at the University of Messina with a PhD mainly focused on Roman history. I plan to live permanently in the wonderful capital of Scotland and I hope to be useful to its people by my work in Classics. |
Teaching Experience: During the summer I taught Latin (at intermediate level) in the University of Edinburgh, where I had a beautiful and stimulating experience with both young and adult students. I shall give tutorials in Latin, Ancient History (Greek and Roman) and Classical Archaeology in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of the University of Edinburgh during the academic year 2008/2009. I have an extensive experience of teaching in my country at virtually every level. I taught Latin and Ancient Greek (beginning, intermediate, advanced level) for many years in high schools (Classical Lyceum) at the beginning of my academic career in Italy. Subsequently, I taught Classics in several universities, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. My teaching is very flexible, especially in responding to the needs of both young students and adults. I can teach Italian, Latin and Ancient Greek (language and literature) at all levels. |
Tutoring Approach: It is not possible to use the same tutoring/teaching method with any student. I think it has to be differentiated specifically. The main target of this work is to help a child to develope his/her thinking, his/her critic approach to the life. Classics are very helpful in this aim. |

In 11+ tutorials children learn all the techniques in order to be successful in 11+ exams in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematics and English. I have experience of entrance exams for several independent schools in Surrey. In Spanish and German I focus on the full range of skills required for competence in a language - reading, writing, listening and speaking.
