Teaching Experience:
I am not a qualified teacher, however that does not affect my ability to tutor. My academic background and achievements are firm examples of my skillful knowledge in particular areas.

I can tutor a child in primary school in the following subjects: English, Math and Science. I use various methods of learning, and provide the tools to allow the child to build upon their own knowledge. Learning can be challenging for some children, but through practice and allowing the child to see it can be fun and highly rewarding means they too can succeed.

I have experience in tutoring primary school children for the transfer test to secondary school, which determines whether or not they will gain admission to a grammar stream.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that determination and confidence in both the student and tutor is necessary to achieve the best possible results in the subject.
The mind needs to be fed wisdom on a regular basis, otherwise it will become tired and lazy. This is usually the reason why those who have left education for a long period of time, struggle with aspects of learning new material. However, through regular attention, reading and testing yourself, it soon becomes easier for one to interpret a problem etc.
I find I have a very relaxed approach to tutoring, I like the student to feel comfortable and at ease. They should not feel stressed or worried at my sessions. This does not mean that I do not expect full commitment to learning from my students though.
I am confident that with my help, anyone with little academic qualifications can be on their way to a higher path of wisdom and understanding.

My home is quiet and fairly minimalistic. Parents/guardians are welcome to stay with us during sessions if they wish. Lessons are held in the dining room on the groundfloor and I have a computer that students can use.

I use the first meeting to talk about any difficulties in learning the subject in a formal educational setting and discuss any specific learning difficulties you may have. We can chat about strategies to help you learn more effectively and I will work with you at a pace that suits you.


To the best of my ability I try to make subjects interesting to young people and re-engage them. I also encourage students to bring along any work they may be struggling with so I can go through it with them.

I am currently a doctoral researcher undertaking my PhD at The University of Glasgow, a personal tutor, a proof reader, a note taker and a support worker for various universities and agencies.

I also do some freelance writing and have contributed numerous articles to the website Helium, most of which are voted number one in their category, I have also had several articles published in society newsletters and publications, including The International Crosby Circle and The Sinatra Music Society. I have organised an international conference, a departmental postgraduate symposium and presented papers at both events.

Teaching Experience:
I work as a Top-Up Tutor for the University of Glasgow where I go to different schools and prepare S5 and S6 students for university; as a Proof Reader, Note Taker and Support Worker for disabled students at the University of the West of Scotland and am a freelance personal on-line and off-line tutor qualified in 15 subject areas including English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies, and General Writing Skills. Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.

I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on)

I'm a 21 year old recent graduate in BA Journalism & Economics from City University in London {Grade 2:1} I'm due to commence my postgraduate study in MSc Management at Cass Business School in September. Teaching Experience:
I was joint-captain of my high-school Modern Dance team for two consecutive years. This position involved teaching dance, developing fitness levels and ensuring all administration was in date and organised. Although not education based, this teaching role allowed me to develop an array of leadership skills in a practical environment. I was a mentor in maths for two consecutive years in high-school. This position involved teaching and elaborating mathematical concepts, setting targets and nurturing my "mentees" into achieving results. I was a tutor in 11+ entrance exams {covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths} to a class of four student. This position involved delegating time efficiently to the three conflicting subjects, identifying areas of weakness within the individual students, and preparing them for their first exam experience. All four students were successful in attaining seats at top grammar and private schools.

Tutoring Approach:
I received academic tutoring from a young age, and strongly believe that tuition is only one part of a series of factors which lead to educational success. Intense competition in an ever-expanding world has much raised the standard of what is expected of children, teens and adults education-wise, so the need to not only conform, but to surpass these obstacles is absolutely necessary. This is achievable through inspiring children and teens at a young age, and tailoring their present lives to accommodate their future plans. From revision plans to essay writing to night-before preparation, I am confident that I would be able to guide and teach students to educational success. I grew up in Singapore where I studied English as my first language and Chinese Mandarin as my mother tongue.

From 2005 - 2007, I worked as a freelance translator for Asia Pacific Breweries, translating marketing promotional materials from English-Chinese for their brands such as Tiger Beer and Heineken. I have also done translations for the Singapore government. As demonstrated, I possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese.

This year, I completed a two-year part-time Diploma programme in Translation Skills (Chinese and English) from the Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business.

Personal Description:
I am a Cambridge English graduate who works in television journalism, and have also tutored on and off for the past few years. I have tutored a range of students over the past few years, from nine year olds to a university journalism student. I also spent two years teaching English, History and French to prep school student attempting to get into Winchester college. Despite being written off by his school, he surprised his teachers by passing the Winchester entrance exams last summer and taking his place at the school.

Tutoring Approach:
Having taught such a broad range of students, my approach has varied accordingly. For instance, the journalism undergraduate needed no encouragement to work, as she was up against tight deadlines and she had a real passion for her work. With younger students I have found it important to compromise and incorporate their individual interests into my teaching. So, for example, alongside learning the grammar that provides the building blocks of language, I have asked students in the past to complete more interesting tasks like writing the scripts for little news reports or constructing their own newspaper. I also think that it is very important for any student of language or literature to read a little every day, be it from a novel or a newspaper.

I have worked in education all my adult life, and ten years ago embarked upon a freelance career which has enabled me to focus on the kind of work I love, and to spend more time with my family, and do the things I most enjoy.

As an English graduate, my greatest passion is literature. I read a wide range of novels, drama and poetry. Authors I have recently enjoyed include Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman, Helen Dunmore, Kazuo Ishiguro... too many to mention!

I spend a lot of time writing and completed a six month course in novel writing with the Faber Academy on which I was delighted to be offered a place. I have had a number of articles and short stories published, and am working on my first novel.

Teaching Experience:
My first job was teaching English to young speakers of other languages during the summer vacations when I was at University - many years ago!

After I graduated in English I qualified as a teacher. My first full-time post was in a sixth-form college, where I taught English at a variety of levels to A-level and University entrance. After two further full-time teaching posts in a 14-19 secondary school and another sixth-form college, I moved into Adult and Community Education. During much of this time I also took on a number of part-time posts, tutoring English, English to Speakers of other Languages, Creative Writing and General Studies in a university extra-mural department, the Workers Education Association and in a number of prisons. I served on the English A-level set books committee of a national examinations board, and have worked as a part-time examiner.

For the past ten years I have been working as a freelance education consultant, trainer and writer. Much of my education consultancy and training work has involved facilitating and coaching young people and professionals in a variety of contexts and a range of subject areas such as communication skills, business writing skills and writing for the media.

Tutoring Approach:
I firmly believe that we only learn effectively when we find the learning experience interesting, relevant and meaningful. My first priority is to endeavour to ensure that my students are having that kind of experience! I also believe that learning should be enjoyable and fun.

I do not believe that good teaching is about pouring knowledge into students, but is about drawing learning out of them and supporting them to teach themselves. We all have huge areas of strength, skill and wisdom, and I always try to enable students to recognise theirs and to develop them to their fullest potential.

Sometimes, of course, learning is about studying things we are not so interested in just to get through an exam - a means to a hopefully more enjoyable end. In that case I help students to find the most effective ways for them to do just that - and hope that even this might be enjoyable too!
