| Personal Description: I am a University student, studying in Liverpool. I have three grade A results at A-level, in English Literature, Drama and Theatre Studies and Religious Studies. Furthermore, I received three awards at A-level, for Outstanding Academic Achievement and gaining the highest marks in English Literature and Drama and Theatre Studies. My G.C.S.E qualifications are as follows in my chosen tutorial fields: English Literature- grade A. English Language-Grade A, Religion-Grade A, Maths- Grade B, Double Award Science-Grade BB. I am currently studying for a BA Hons. Degree in Journalism. |
Teaching Experience: I am not a qualified teacher, however that does not affect my ability to tutor. My academic background and achievements are firm examples of my skillful knowledge in particular areas. I can tutor a child in primary school in the following subjects: English, Math and Science. I use various methods of learning, and provide the tools to allow the child to build upon their own knowledge. Learning can be challenging for some children, but through practice and allowing the child to see it can be fun and highly rewarding means they too can succeed. I have experience in tutoring primary school children for the transfer test to secondary school, which determines whether or not they will gain admission to a grammar stream. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that determination and confidence in both the student and tutor is necessary to achieve the best possible results in the subject. The mind needs to be fed wisdom on a regular basis, otherwise it will become tired and lazy. This is usually the reason why those who have left education for a long period of time, struggle with aspects of learning new material. However, through regular attention, reading and testing yourself, it soon becomes easier for one to interpret a problem etc. I find I have a very relaxed approach to tutoring, I like the student to feel comfortable and at ease. They should not feel stressed or worried at my sessions. This does not mean that I do not expect full commitment to learning from my students though. I am confident that with my help, anyone with little academic qualifications can be on their way to a higher path of wisdom and understanding. |

| Personal Description: My name is Lyndsey Oliver and I am currently undertaking a Music Journalism degree. I have qualifications in Journalism, English and I.T. I am an honest hardworking individual, and love to help others succeed. |
Teaching Experience: Although I have no direct teaching experience it has always been a passion of mine. I have helped my younger cousin through her school life as she is dyslexic. I provided on-going support and made her feel totally at ease with all subjects that she completed. I have recently helped my brother in law undertake his GCSE's and my husband undertake a course in Maths and English in his Learn Direct course. Both of whom were dyslexic. I have also undertaken work experience in a primary school, and have helped others in both my college and university life during studying. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that a relaxed style benefits tutees greatly. Deadlines and an enthusiasm are essential to my style. Although my style is rather informal (I prefer first name terms and a friendly approach) I am able to stay disciplined and helpful. |

| Personal Description: I am a 23 year journalist with a first degree in English Literature offering tutoring services. English Literature has always been one of my passions. At GCSE I achieved A*, followed by a grade A at A Level and a 2.1 in English and Related Literature at York University. I am a friendly, easy going yet organised and clear thinking individual who enjoys interacting with young people and helping them develop to their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: Over the past year I have been involved in several volunteering projects in local schools in Rotherham, using my English Literature and Journalism skills to help deprived children. This has involved helping children write creative pieces, source stories for school magazines and learn how to use new technology recently introduced into the school. I have a passion for education and enjoy interacting with pupils. My communication skills are highly developed and I have an easy going yet focussed teaching style. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is always to find a way that pupils can relate to the text. With this technique, it is key to identify which examining board the candidate is using and structure all teaching around the specific assessment objectives of their mark scheme. Structured tutorials are planned each week, whereby specific topics and themes are targeted. Revision techniques, such as mind maps, practice essays and exam skills are all part of the programme. If candidates feel they have any specific weaknesses, such as essay structuring or grammatical flaws, these can all be targeted to suit the pupil. |

| Personal Description: I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language. |
Teaching Experience: I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a doctoral researcher undertaking my PhD at The University of Glasgow, a personal tutor, a proof reader, a note taker and a support worker for various universities and agencies. I also hold a BA (Hons) undergraduate degree and an MLitt (Master of Letters) postgraduate degree. I am a qualified personal tutor in 15 subject areas and am rated a 10/10 tutor by Alpha Tutors. I also do some freelance writing and have contributed numerous articles to the website Helium, most of which are voted number one in their category, I have also had several articles published in society newsletters and publications, including The International Crosby Circle and The Sinatra Music Society. I have organised an international conference, a departmental postgraduate symposium and presented papers at both events. |
Teaching Experience: I work as a Top-Up Tutor for the University of Glasgow where I go to different schools and prepare S5 and S6 students for university; as a Proof Reader, Note Taker and Support Worker for disabled students at the University of the West of Scotland and am a freelance personal on-line and off-line tutor qualified in 15 subject areas including English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies, and General Writing Skills. I work via Alpha Tutors, UK Tutors, Tutors4Kids and Fleet Tutors and teach from pre-exam age to Standard Grade, Higher, GCSE, A-Level, University level and Adult Learners. I have been tutoring since August 2007 and have chalked up around 400 tutoring hours in these subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc. I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on) |

| Personal Description: I'm a 21 year old recent graduate in BA Journalism & Economics from City University in London {Grade 2:1} I'm due to commence my postgraduate study in MSc Management at Cass Business School in September. I studied for my A-Levels, AS-Levels and GCSE exams at Dr. Challoner's High School in Amersham. In my entrance exams for the listed grammar school {which included verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths} I achieved 141/141. I have written extensively for the Financial Times and pay a keen interest in Finance Journalism. I currently work part-time in Harrods, and pay a lot of attention to presentation, elocution and detail, in both myself and my area of work. I believe tutoring will provide me with a refreshing balance to what is going to be an academically rigorous year. Confident, driven, friendly and learned, I feel that I have a wealth of experience in imparting knowledge, instilling ideals and motivating others; qualities which make for a successful tutor. |
Teaching Experience: I was joint-captain of my high-school Modern Dance team for two consecutive years. This position involved teaching dance, developing fitness levels and ensuring all administration was in date and organised. Although not education based, this teaching role allowed me to develop an array of leadership skills in a practical environment. I was a mentor in maths for two consecutive years in high-school. This position involved teaching and elaborating mathematical concepts, setting targets and nurturing my "mentees" into achieving results. I was a tutor in 11+ entrance exams {covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths} to a class of four student. This position involved delegating time efficiently to the three conflicting subjects, identifying areas of weakness within the individual students, and preparing them for their first exam experience. All four students were successful in attaining seats at top grammar and private schools. |
Tutoring Approach: I received academic tutoring from a young age, and strongly believe that tuition is only one part of a series of factors which lead to educational success. Intense competition in an ever-expanding world has much raised the standard of what is expected of children, teens and adults education-wise, so the need to not only conform, but to surpass these obstacles is absolutely necessary. This is achievable through inspiring children and teens at a young age, and tailoring their present lives to accommodate their future plans. From revision plans to essay writing to night-before preparation, I am confident that I would be able to guide and teach students to educational success. Adept, motivated, and a meticulous perfectionist, I feel that I would be an excellent role model and tutor. |

| Personal Description: I grew up in Singapore where I studied English as my first language and Chinese Mandarin as my mother tongue. From 2005 - 2007, I worked as a freelance translator for Asia Pacific Breweries, translating marketing promotional materials from English-Chinese for their brands such as Tiger Beer and Heineken. I have also done translations for the Singapore government. As demonstrated, I possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese. This year, I completed a two-year part-time Diploma programme in Translation Skills (Chinese and English) from the Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business. Earlier in June, a team of Chinese teachers from Singapore, including myself, were invited by The Office of Chinese Language Council International or China Hanban, to attend a 2-week course at the Shanghai Fudan University on Chinese Language Teaching. Currently, I live in South Wales and am available to tutor children, youths or adult learners who are interested in learning Beginner's Chinese Mandarin. I am also able to teach English (for foreign speakers), Business-related subjects or Media and Journalism subjects. |
Teaching Experience: I graduated with a Master's degree with Distinction in International Journalism from Cardiff University and worked as a Life Skills Lecturer at Singapore's Institute of Technical Education from 2006 to 2008. At the College, I taught a variety of modules in English to students aged 16-22, which include Communication Skills, Personal Effectiveness and Career Planning & Development. In addition to teaching, I was also Editor of the college's newsletter, CE:360, in March 2007. I worked with the students to write and design the newsletter where 8,000 copies were printed every six-monthly for the students and staff of the College. Recognised for my commitment and reliability, I was chosen by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to represent the college on a one-month foreign teaching assignment where I taught basic English to Lao government officials. Before becoming a teacher and translator, I graduated with a first degree in Advertising and Marketing Communications. I was employed as a senior public relations executive in a Singapore-based PR agency for two years, where I devised a number of PR and marketing programmes and organised many publicity events. |
Tutoring Approach: I am patient, encouraging and methodical in my approach to help learners gain confidence in the subject. Realistic learning goals coupled with a fun learning environment would ensure learners sustain their interest in the subject and eventually develop competence. Learning is individually tailored to fully cater to the learner's needs. |

| Personal Description: I am a Cambridge English graduate who works in television journalism, and have also tutored on and off for the past few years. I have travelled extensively, having taken a year out and blown all the bank's money seeing sites that I never thought I'd see. I love a good book, and also really enjoy going to the cinema. Being in documentary TV production I also have a penchant for a well made factual film. I'm 27 years old and I grew up in Sussex. However, for the past four years I have lived in London, where I now work. I am happy to travel across the city to tutor - I currently live in Shoreditch. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored a range of students over the past few years, from nine year olds to a university journalism student. I also spent two years teaching English, History and French to prep school student attempting to get into Winchester college. Despite being written off by his school, he surprised his teachers by passing the Winchester entrance exams last summer and taking his place at the school. |
Tutoring Approach: Having taught such a broad range of students, my approach has varied accordingly. For instance, the journalism undergraduate needed no encouragement to work, as she was up against tight deadlines and she had a real passion for her work. With younger students I have found it important to compromise and incorporate their individual interests into my teaching. So, for example, alongside learning the grammar that provides the building blocks of language, I have asked students in the past to complete more interesting tasks like writing the scripts for little news reports or constructing their own newspaper. I also think that it is very important for any student of language or literature to read a little every day, be it from a novel or a newspaper. |

| Personal Description: I have worked in education all my adult life, and ten years ago embarked upon a freelance career which has enabled me to focus on the kind of work I love, and to spend more time with my family, and do the things I most enjoy. As an English graduate, my greatest passion is literature. I read a wide range of novels, drama and poetry. Authors I have recently enjoyed include Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman, Helen Dunmore, Kazuo Ishiguro... too many to mention! I spend a lot of time writing and completed a six month course in novel writing with the Faber Academy on which I was delighted to be offered a place. I have had a number of articles and short stories published, and am working on my first novel. |
Teaching Experience: My first job was teaching English to young speakers of other languages during the summer vacations when I was at University - many years ago! After I graduated in English I qualified as a teacher. My first full-time post was in a sixth-form college, where I taught English at a variety of levels to A-level and University entrance. After two further full-time teaching posts in a 14-19 secondary school and another sixth-form college, I moved into Adult and Community Education. During much of this time I also took on a number of part-time posts, tutoring English, English to Speakers of other Languages, Creative Writing and General Studies in a university extra-mural department, the Workers Education Association and in a number of prisons. I served on the English A-level set books committee of a national examinations board, and have worked as a part-time examiner. For the past ten years I have been working as a freelance education consultant, trainer and writer. Much of my education consultancy and training work has involved facilitating and coaching young people and professionals in a variety of contexts and a range of subject areas such as communication skills, business writing skills and writing for the media. |
Tutoring Approach: I firmly believe that we only learn effectively when we find the learning experience interesting, relevant and meaningful. My first priority is to endeavour to ensure that my students are having that kind of experience! I also believe that learning should be enjoyable and fun. I do not believe that good teaching is about pouring knowledge into students, but is about drawing learning out of them and supporting them to teach themselves. We all have huge areas of strength, skill and wisdom, and I always try to enable students to recognise theirs and to develop them to their fullest potential. Sometimes, of course, learning is about studying things we are not so interested in just to get through an exam - a means to a hopefully more enjoyable end. In that case I help students to find the most effective ways for them to do just that - and hope that even this might be enjoyable too! |

| Personal Description: I am a freelance journalist with a degree and MA in English language and computational linguistics. I work from home and contribute on a regular basis to the Guardian, Telegraph, Independent and many of the major music magazines. I am a qualified subeditor and used to edit Muso, a classical music magazine. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at Leeds University on the linguistics degree course and also in the computing department in HTML programming. I have experience of teaching English as a foreign language at residential summer camps and I have undertaken degree modules in the application of teaching methods for EFL. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a holistic approach to tutoring, believing that it's sometimes better to start from the beginning and understand the problem as a whole before focusing on details. Often the problem can be much larger than spelling or grammar and it is therefore necessary to get back to basics first. I am informal and approachable with a sense of fun! |
