Personal Description:
I am a confident writer with journalistic, theatre and publishing experience. I have a Class I BA(Hons) English Language & Literature with an MA in Writing for Performance & Publication. I have worked with companies as diverse as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Theatre in the Mill, Freedom Studios, BBC, Endemol, Lion TV, Dog Horn Publishing, Pink Paper, Leeds Guide and Bent. My first novel, Troglodyte Rose, is a finalist in the 2010 Lambda Literary Awards in New York and I previously won the Spectrum Fantastic Arts Silver Editorial Award in 2008.

Teaching Experience:

I am experienced in one-to-one tuition and mentoring, and have run programmes of workshops and educational events for the past two years in a formal setting and the past eight years in an informal setting.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to set out our initial goals up front, so that both the tutee and I have a plan to work from. This enables us to better evaluate the direction the tutoring is going and see specific successes and failures to tailor future sessions. I am relaxed and informal, whilst still maintaining a high level of professionalism. I feel this is the best way to impart knowledge since people are more responsive to someone they can engage with. Ultimately, we will work at your own pace and target those areas you feel most concerned about. I will be punctual, friendly and helpful and will guarantee a positive experience.

Personal Description:
I'm a 23-year-old postgraduate student from Nottingham Trent University with two First Class degrees - one in English Literature from Lancaster University and a postgraduate degree in Print Journalism from Nottingham Trent University.
I'm friendly and approachable and love to meet new people. I live in Lancaster and intend to take on a further course of study in the next academic year - hopefully leading on to a PhD in English Literature.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for several weeks at Skerton High School, in Lancaster, as well as taking part in several one-to-one teaching opportunities through college and University. I enjoyed my time spent teaching very much, which has influenced me to offer my services to children or adults who would benefit from a little extra attention on the run up to exams, in a subject they struggle with or in an academic area they'd like a bit of outside influence in.

Tutoring Approach:

I've always achieved very high results myself but I don't believe this can be done working alone from a text book. I like to engage students with lots of questions and encourage them to work through their ideas out loud, through research and practical examples.
I achieved my two degrees, 5 As at A Level and 2 As and 9 A*s at GCSE this way - and I'm sure others can benefit from it too.

Personal Description:
I am a freelance journalist and I have written for several newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Big Issue, Bristol Review of Books, Real Travel, Mind Magazine, Volunteering England and Venue. Previous to being being freelance I was the Publisher of The Big Issue (South West).

Teaching Experience:

I teach journalism at Bath Spa University, helping students to get their work published. I also mentor young people in a project with Positive News. In the past I have also taught at the Arvon Foundation and The Folk House.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a good sense of humour and like to make the sessions as informal as possible. I have worked with several students via email and telephone. This means that you can tackle a bit at a time and save yourself money. I usually make a few suggestions at first, allow you to make them and then repeat the process until you are happy your work is the best it can be.

Personal Description:
I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language.

Teaching Experience:

I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions.

Personal Description:
I'm a 21 year old recent graduate in BA Journalism & Economics from City University in London {Grade 2:1} I'm due to commence my postgraduate study in MSc Management at Cass Business School in September. I studied for my A-Levels, AS-Levels and GCSE exams at Dr. Challoner's High School in Amersham. In my entrance exams for the listed grammar school {which included verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths} I achieved 141/141. I have written extensively for the Financial Times and pay a keen interest in Finance Journalism. I currently work part-time in Harrods, and pay a lot of attention to presentation, elocution and detail, in both myself and my area of work. I believe tutoring will provide me with a refreshing balance to what is going to be an academically rigorous year. Confident, driven, friendly and learned, I feel that I have a wealth of experience in imparting knowledge, instilling ideals and motivating others; qualities which make for a successful tutor.

Teaching Experience:

I was joint-captain of my high-school Modern Dance team for two consecutive years. This position involved teaching dance, developing fitness levels and ensuring all administration was in date and organised. Although not education based, this teaching role allowed me to develop an array of leadership skills in a practical environment. I was a mentor in maths for two consecutive years in high-school. This position involved teaching and elaborating mathematical concepts, setting targets and nurturing my "mentees" into achieving results. I was a tutor in 11+ entrance exams {covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths} to a class of four student. This position involved delegating time efficiently to the three conflicting subjects, identifying areas of weakness within the individual students, and preparing them for their first exam experience. All four students were successful in attaining seats at top grammar and private schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I received academic tutoring from a young age, and strongly believe that tuition is only one part of a series of factors which lead to educational success. Intense competition in an ever-expanding world has much raised the standard of what is expected of children, teens and adults education-wise, so the need to not only conform, but to surpass these obstacles is absolutely necessary. This is achievable through inspiring children and teens at a young age, and tailoring their present lives to accommodate their future plans. From revision plans to essay writing to night-before preparation, I am confident that I would be able to guide and teach students to educational success. Adept, motivated, and a meticulous perfectionist, I feel that I would be an excellent role model and tutor.

Personal Description:
I am currently a doctoral researcher undertaking my PhD at The University of Glasgow, a personal tutor, a proof reader, a note taker and a support worker for various universities and agencies.

I also hold a BA (Hons) undergraduate degree and an MLitt (Master of Letters) postgraduate degree. I am a qualified personal tutor in 15 subject areas and am rated a 10/10 tutor by Alpha Tutors. I also do some freelance writing and have contributed numerous articles to the website Helium, most of which are voted number one in their category, I have also had several articles published in society newsletters and publications, including The International Crosby Circle and The Sinatra Music Society. I have organised an international conference, a departmental postgraduate symposium and presented papers at both events.

Teaching Experience:

I work as a Top-Up Tutor for the University of Glasgow where I go to different schools and prepare S5 and S6 students for university; as a Proof Reader, Note Taker and Support Worker for disabled students at the University of the West of Scotland and am a freelance personal on-line and off-line tutor qualified in 15 subject areas including English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies, and General Writing Skills. I work via Alpha Tutors, UK Tutors, Tutors4Kids and Fleet Tutors and teach from pre-exam age to Standard Grade, Higher, GCSE, A-Level, University level and Adult Learners. I have been tutoring since August 2007 and have chalked up around 400 tutoring hours in these subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.

I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on)

Personal Description:
My name is Lyndsey Oliver and I am currently undertaking a Music Journalism degree. I have qualifications in Journalism, English and I.T. I am an honest hardworking individual, and love to help others succeed.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no direct teaching experience it has always been a passion of mine. I have helped my younger cousin through her school life as she is dyslexic. I provided on-going support and made her feel totally at ease with all subjects that she completed. I have recently helped my brother in law undertake his GCSE's and my husband undertake a course in Maths and English in his Learn Direct course. Both of whom were dyslexic. I have also undertaken work experience in a primary school, and have helped others in both my college and university life during studying.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that a relaxed style benefits tutees greatly. Deadlines and an enthusiasm are essential to my style. Although my style is rather informal (I prefer first name terms and a friendly approach) I am able to stay disciplined and helpful.

Personal Description:
I am a freelance journalist, specialising in arts and lifestyle, and currently publishing in The Entertainment Guide and Clash. I have an extensive knowledge of English literature, media and communications, having been an active practitioner. I have made documentaries about underground hip hop, written a video/performance piece for Scotland's leading stage actor Tam Dean Burn, and exhibition programmes. Indeed my actual degree is in art history, and Film and TV (with a journalism post grad), but my main experience has been in teaching English, my degree being equivalent to an English degree.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a personal tutor for over ten years, which I have sometimes found to be more rewarding than the journalism. This is partly form the pleasure of actually seeing people learn, and I have had generally encouraging results. I have mainly taught English from Standard Grade to Advanced Higher, but have also occasionally spoken at college events on cinema. I have recently been doing academic editing for Glasgow University, working with post graduate students whose native language is not English, on a wide variety of topics.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a practical appraoch to tuition, working according to the curriculum to get the best exam results. In English for instance, I work from a diet of past papers to improve Textual Analysis and Comprehension skills, as well as helping students with whatever school work they have at hand. I will not be setting them assignments such as write a poem about a daffodil! On the other hand, I do try and make lessons enjoyable and interesting, and if I can communicate a love of English language and literature as well as securing a good pass, I ccan consider myself to have successfully done my job.

Personal Description:
I am a University student, studying in Liverpool. I have three grade A results at A-level, in English Literature, Drama and Theatre Studies and Religious Studies. Furthermore, I received three awards at A-level, for Outstanding Academic Achievement and gaining the highest marks in English Literature and Drama and Theatre Studies.
My G.C.S.E qualifications are as follows in my chosen tutorial fields: English Literature- grade A.
English Language-Grade A, Religion-Grade A, Maths- Grade B, Double Award Science-Grade BB.
I am currently studying for a BA Hons. Degree in Journalism.

Teaching Experience:

I am not a qualified teacher, however that does not affect my ability to tutor. My academic background and achievements are firm examples of my skillful knowledge in particular areas.

I can tutor a child in primary school in the following subjects: English, Math and Science. I use various methods of learning, and provide the tools to allow the child to build upon their own knowledge. Learning can be challenging for some children, but through practice and allowing the child to see it can be fun and highly rewarding means they too can succeed.

I have experience in tutoring primary school children for the transfer test to secondary school, which determines whether or not they will gain admission to a grammar stream.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that determination and confidence in both the student and tutor is necessary to achieve the best possible results in the subject.
The mind needs to be fed wisdom on a regular basis, otherwise it will become tired and lazy. This is usually the reason why those who have left education for a long period of time, struggle with aspects of learning new material. However, through regular attention, reading and testing yourself, it soon becomes easier for one to interpret a problem etc.
I find I have a very relaxed approach to tutoring, I like the student to feel comfortable and at ease. They should not feel stressed or worried at my sessions. This does not mean that I do not expect full commitment to learning from my students though.
I am confident that with my help, anyone with little academic qualifications can be on their way to a higher path of wisdom and understanding.

I worked as a full time teaching assistant for a year in a secondary school and then as a teaching assistant in a primary school for children who required extra help in basic reading, writing and comprehension. More recently I have worked as a private tutor for students preparing for GCSEs and A Levels exams in subjects such as English Literature, History, Media Studies, Classics and Geography.

Tutoring Approach:

I establish exactly what the student hopes to gain from tutoring and encourage them to enjoy the process and see private tuition as a time in which they can benefit from individual attention and ask any question that occurs to them. I also like to follow a structured framework for study so that students can see what they have learnt as well as know what is coming up. This enables them to explore a subject in a way that they find interesting as well as meeting their aims.

Personal Description:
I grew up in Singapore where I studied English as my first language and Chinese Mandarin as my mother tongue.

From 2005 - 2007, I worked as a freelance translator for Asia Pacific Breweries, translating marketing promotional materials from English-Chinese for their brands such as Tiger Beer and Heineken. I have also done translations for the Singapore government. As demonstrated, I possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese.

This year, I completed a two-year part-time Diploma programme in Translation Skills (Chinese and English) from the Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business.

Earlier in June, a team of Chinese teachers from Singapore, including myself, were invited by The Office of Chinese Language Council International or China Hanban, to attend a 2-week course at the Shanghai Fudan University on Chinese Language Teaching.

Currently, I live in South Wales and am available to tutor children, youths or adult learners who are interested in learning Beginner's Chinese Mandarin. I am also able to teach English (for foreign speakers), Business-related subjects or Media and Journalism subjects.

Teaching Experience:

I graduated with a Master's degree with Distinction in International Journalism from Cardiff University and worked as a Life Skills Lecturer at Singapore's Institute of Technical Education from 2006 to 2008. At the College, I taught a variety of modules in English to students aged 16-22, which include Communication Skills, Personal Effectiveness and Career Planning & Development.

In addition to teaching, I was also Editor of the college's newsletter, CE:360, in March 2007. I worked with the students to write and design the newsletter where 8,000 copies were printed every six-monthly for the students and staff of the College.

Recognised for my commitment and reliability, I was chosen by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to represent the college on a one-month foreign teaching assignment where I taught basic English to Lao government officials.

Before becoming a teacher and translator, I graduated with a first degree in Advertising and Marketing Communications. I was employed as a senior public relations executive in a Singapore-based PR agency for two years, where I devised a number of PR and marketing programmes and organised many publicity events.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient, encouraging and methodical in my approach to help learners gain confidence in the subject. Realistic learning goals coupled with a fun learning environment would ensure learners sustain their interest in the subject and eventually develop competence. Learning is individually tailored to fully cater to the learner's needs.

Personal Description:
My name is Lana, I am a 27 year old female from London. I am a qualified CELTA teacher and have previously studied, Media Studies, Journalism, I.T, Theatre Studies, English Literature and Language - all up to A-Level standard. Whilst at University, I studied a BA Hons Media and Communication with Journalism and PR and was awarded a 2.1 honors degree.

I have severe ADHD and numeracy dyslexia which means that I can empathize with people who may also have learning difficulties. If i can do it, anyone can.

My approach to teaching is to work with the individual on one a one to one basis and work together to form a plan of they want to achieve. I am flexible in my approach and am here to guide and assist rather than to instruct.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified CELTA teacher with over 6 months classroom experience to intermediate and elementary learners. I also have over 5 years copy writing, journalism and English experience and have taught this at many levels to people from all ages and backgrounds.

Professionally I have worked as a journalist and a copywriter and have gained many skills that allow me to now offer tuition in English, reading and writing to people of all ages.

Currently i am teaching a Japanese lady how to speak, write and read in English which involves grammar, pronunciation and speaking skills.

I am also currently teaching a man with no experience of computers how to use his computer and the Internet.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to work closely with the person i am tutoring to find out what it is they want to achieve and set goals together. I prefer to be flexible in my approach so that the pupil enjoys what i do and feels that they are doing and achieving exactly what they want to.

Because of my ADHD and dyslexia i know how to teach in a way that anyone with out or without learning difficulties can understand. I am sympathetic and easy going and will work at the individuals own pace rather then imposing deadlines on them.

Whilst at school i was always told off for being lazy and for not listening when in truth i did listen and did work hard but because of ADHD i just did it in a different way. I can use this understand to adapt my teaching methods in a way that makes learning fun and easy for everyone.

I can teach slowly or quickly at whatever pace you require, i also teach in a simple and effective style in very explanatory way so that you know why we do things the way we do rather than just learning how it is done.

Personal Description:
I am a 23 year journalist with a first degree in English Literature offering tutoring services.

English Literature has always been one of my passions. At GCSE I achieved A*, followed by a grade A at A Level and a 2.1 in English and Related Literature at York University.

I am a friendly, easy going yet organised and clear thinking individual who enjoys interacting with young people and helping them develop to their full potential.

Teaching Experience:

Over the past year I have been involved in several volunteering projects in local schools in Rotherham, using my English Literature and Journalism skills to help deprived children.

This has involved helping children write creative pieces, source stories for school magazines and learn how to use new technology recently introduced into the school.

I have a passion for education and enjoy interacting with pupils. My communication skills are highly developed and I have an easy going yet focussed teaching style.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is always to find a way that pupils can relate to the text.

With this technique, it is key to identify which examining board the candidate is using and structure all teaching around the specific assessment objectives of their mark scheme.

Structured tutorials are planned each week, whereby specific topics and themes are targeted.

Revision techniques, such as mind maps, practice essays and exam skills are all part of the programme.

If candidates feel they have any specific weaknesses, such as essay structuring or grammatical flaws, these can all be targeted to suit the pupil.
