| Personal Description: I am a 20 year old female university student studying a French and Japanese BA at Cardiff university. I am currently in my second year and I'm hoping to find some people who would like me to help them with their learning, because helping others to learn only reinforces what you already know, and I like to keep my brain active! |
Teaching Experience: At the moment I have no proper experience as a tutor, the closest I can claim to have had is helping my neighbour's children with ICT and helping my younger sister with French. I would like to try being a tutor as I've been told it's an enjoyable experience, and will give me some valuable experience for when I begin a teaching course after university. |
Tutoring Approach: I am willing to teach in a variety of ways, both online and offline, as well as helping you/your child to advance in the learning of your chosen subject. I would begin by assessing how far the tutee has already progressed in the subject and try to work out any weak areas, and then continue by creating exercises and situations designed to try and improve in those areas. For example; if I were tutoring the tutee in French and I found that their weakness was in the spoken language, I would have conversations with them and try to involve them in activities that use French language, such as watching French programmes, listening to French radio or the opportunity to speak with a native French speaker. I would also record the conversations so that the tutee could listen to them later and hear their own mistakes, then work on trying to correct them. If the tutoring were a completely online situation, I would communicate with the tutee via all methods of internet communication (IM, skype, e-mail) and use a similar approach to the one I would in person. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a final year student studying for my BA in French and Japanese at Cardiff University. I have lived and worked in various cities in France for over a year and I have also lived for six months in Tokyo where I studied at Dokkyo University, Japan's most prestigious foreign language institute. After graduating I plan to move to France to undertake a 2 years Masters in Business Administration. In my spare time i am a keen musician and play sport regularly. |
Teaching Experience: I taught English and Japanese in my spare time for six months whilst living in Toulouse, France to various levels. During my time in Tokyo, I tutored in English and French. My students in Japan varied in age and ability ranging from Elementary school students to Businessmen. I also helped once a week in a chat room at my university where any student could come and chat for an hour with a fluent french speaker. |
Tutoring Approach: Text books, handouts as well as the materials used by the student at school (if appropriate). I believe in active learning and encourage the student to think for themselves. I try to use the widest range of information sources available such as television, Internet and other printed resources. Still being a student I know the pressures of revision and am very willing to help preparing for exams. |

| Personal Description: I have recently completed a PGCE in English and I graduated in July 2008 from the University of Leeds with a 2:i Hons in English and Japanese. As of September 2009 I will begin studying for an MA in English Literature. I have always been interested in languages and in reading, however while at secondary school I felt disinterested and unengaged, as though lessons were something to be endured rather than enjoyed. While assisting at a number of schools I discovered that this did not have to be the case, and so I developed a desire to help people enjoy learning. |
Teaching Experience: I hold Qualified Teacher Status having completed a PGCE in Secondary English. In addition to this, I also achieved a post-16 recommendation as a result of teaching A-Level English Language and English Literature. During my PGCE I undertook extended placements at Mount St. Mary's Catholic High School in central Leeds, and Bradford Grammar School. At these schools I taught a wide range of classes from Year 7 up to A-Level, and taught a full range of abilities, including both SEN pupils and A* pupils at A-Level. Before completing my PGCE I also had experience assisting in both Primary and Secondary schools, and in teaching Japanese and conversational English privately. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor I attempt to make sure that I relate to each individual, personalising materials and ensuring that materials and discussions are relevant by combining the core principles of the subject with modern, understandable examples. In this way it is possible to make sure that pupils understand how a topic applies to them, rather than merely forcing themselves to memorise information. I use a range of approaches including visual, audio and kinaesthetic aids and activities to ensure that the pupil is engaged and that learning is an active rather than passive experience. |

| Personal Description: I recently graduated from university and am interested in pursuing a career in education, I enjoy working with young people, I am easy going but have a good, committed work ethic. I studied Biology and Geography at A-level, achieving a good B grade in biology, and A in geography with 100% in some of my modules. I studied Graphic Arts and Design at university and recently graduated with a 2:1 degree (only 2 marks from a first) - and have thorough experience with most aspects of art and design including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital design (including programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), animation, printing, typography and graphic design, photography and film making. I also have a lifelong interest and skills in other crafts such as sewing/dressmaking, knitting and crochet. |
Teaching Experience: I studied in Japan for 11 months and therefore have some experience teaching English to Japanese students of all ages, in an informal setting and at a local tutoring school, which was at times extremely challenging, however I found the experience to be very enjoyable and enlightening. In this time I also attended 3 Japanese lessons a week and developed Japanese reading, writing and speaking skills equivalent to 18months of study in the UK. I also learned a lot about Japanese culture and education. Other than this I have no formal teaching experience but throughout my education have always found fulfillment in helping my fellow students in their studies. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a down to earth and very patient and sympathetic person, with a genuine interest in all of my subjects. I am willing to help with any aspects of a student's education, including homework, coursework, following a specific syllabus or studying a subject in general. I would usually approach the tutoring with guidance from the student as to where help is needed or desired, but if given advance information and notice, I would be willing to draw up lesson plans and prepare research for each tutoring session. |

| Personal Description: My name is Ciaran Gibson and I am a student of Japanese and German at the University of Sheffield. I am originally from Belfast, and spend my time there at Christmas, Easter and during the summer vacation. I am very enthusiastic about languages and linguistic development. I have studied German and French coming on 9 years and Japanese for 4 years. I have experience also with Spanish, Chinese Mandarin, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Korean. I plan to become a translator or interpreter once I have finished my current degree and a post-graduate program. |
Teaching Experience: Formally, I have no teaching experience. I have never been in a classroom situation, however I have often tutored friends and fellow students who did not seem to grasp what we were doing in class. I feel that I grasp new grammar points quickly and am able to explain them from several approaches so that a student may understand the language and how it functions. There are some fellow students who I have persistently helped and I feel that I have helped them through exams to achieve their goals in getting closer to attaining their degree. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach would be to introduce basic grammar and build upon that, introducing useful vocabulary and phrases along the way. With GCSE and A-Level tutoring, I would mostly be going over what has been taught in class and explaining any points the tutee may feel uncomfortable with. With those not-so-strong areas, I would encourage the tutee to practice them, all the while not ignoring the other areas of the language. |

| Personal Description: I am a final year medical student at Oxford University looking to work with students of all ages to help with their studies. I have a desire to help both students who are struggling with their work at school or college, as well as help to challenge and to stretch students who are looking for extra work outside of their regular study. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutorial experience working with students at GCSE, A level and university level across a range of subjects and experience teaching younger students both in primary school and for dance lessons. I am a mentor of sixth form and university students, both for academic and extra-curricular issues. During termtime, I also take sex education lessons in local secondary schools, as part of the group run by medical students, Sexpression Oxford. |
Tutoring Approach: I want to be able to support and stretch students in a positive and supportive learning environment. I prefer to work in a structured and yet relaxed manner, allowing students to work at a pace that is comfortable for them, whilst ensuring that students are able to progress to the best of their potential. It is my hope that tutoring sessions will be led by the students in terms of content, where I will then have input into areas which I think need further development. |

| Personal Description: I am young, friendly, enthusiastic and experienced tutor. I have lived abroad for over 5 years so I am very open minded and value diversity. I am currently completing an Msc in Community Learning and Development and enjoying it very much. As a trained artist I enjoy making and exhibiting my work in Scotland. I am a very active person, I love snowboarding and rock climbing and I think my varied interests have stood me in good stead in my experience thus far - good analogies for teaching! |
Teaching Experience: Over four years teaching Art and English as a second language in Japan - to students aged 2 to 82! In Japan I taught in both private and group settings and trained colleagues to facilitate learning. Experience of teaching business English and preparing students to sit TOEFL, IELTS and other English Language tests. In the UK I have taught art and craft in children's classes and young people art school portfolio preparation. I have extensive experience of working with children, young people and migrants in a community setting, teaching everything from global citizenship to outdoor education. |
Tutoring Approach: As an arts graduate I am extremely creative and like to apply this to my teaching. While working in Japan I set up the community centre in which I worked and created the programme and curriculum according to the expressed needs of the students; I think this is very important - to respond to what the students wish to learn. I am patient and tolerant of mistakes and attitudes, while encouraging and hopeful about progress. I am very laid back and like to have a joke - I would like to think that my students enjoy learning with me, as I have certainly enjoyed learning with them! |

| Personal Description: My name is Stephanie, I'm 21 years old and a fourth year student of German at Cardiff University, which I enjoy very much. I attended Wolverhampton Girls' High School from the ages of 11-18, which is a selective school often among the top-ranked schools in the country. I studied all of the core subjects alongside French, German, Japanese, Geography and Religious Studies up to GCSE level, achieving at least an A in all of these. I continued with German and Japanese to A Level, achieving an A grade in each, and AS levels in Applied ICT and Psychology at grade B. I have been involved with Girlguiding UK since the age of 14, and have since developed many skills, including working with young girls from age 5-16, and leadership skills. I recently spent my Year Abroad as part of my degree course as an English Language assistant, which has given me a great deal of experience of teaching English at various levels. Over the summer holidays I am based in Lincoln (LN4 area), and during the academic year I will be based in Cardiff. |
Teaching Experience: During Sixth Form I elected to help with language teaching at a local comprehensive school. I helped in French/German classes for Year 9, assisting them with their learning by various methods including help with speaking, and leading activities with small groups. Within school, I was a Language Mentor during Year 13, meeting with students once a week to help them with their German skills. I enjoyed this very much as it enabled me to come up with different activities and methods to help the students. Along with a few of my peers I also helped to run a "summer school" for local primary school children for a day, which introduced them to Japanese. I assisted with all aspects of this, from planning to teaching the classes and joining in with the activities. I am currently on my year abroad as part of my degree, and am working as an English Language assistant in a German school, which will be of endless value upon my return to the UK. |
Tutoring Approach: I maintain a friendly, patient student-centered approach to my tutoring and am happy to work with the tutee and/or parents to create an individual plan to maximise learning. I use a variety of methods to ensure that learning does not become monotonous. As I have learned German and Japanese from scratch, and have seen English "being learned", I am aware that difficulties can arise in various areas of the language and I would be sympathetic towards this and help students to overcome these difficulties. I offer a free initial meeting in a public place during which we can discuss your requirements for tutoring, and any other arrangements which need to be made. |

| Personal Description: Hello, my name is Janette and I am an American living in Peterculter, Aberdeenshire. I have recently obtained an MSc with distinction in Comparative Literature from the University of Edinburgh and graduated Magna Cum Laude from LaSalle University with a degree in English and Spanish and a Japanese minor. With 11 years of Spanish language studies and 2 years of formal Japanese linguistic training I have a strong background in foreign language inspired by my interest in literature. I paint using acrylics and water colors in my free time, and have attended Advanced Placement art classes in high school. I have experience with painting, sketching with pencils and other mixed media, figure studies, and basic clay scultping and can easily pass this knowledge on. I am currently able to work in the UK under a Tier 1 post-study visa which is valid until January 2012. |
Teaching Experience: My background in foreign language has translated into a post-study career goal oriented in aiding children and adults to discover the joy of learning another language and thereby accessing a different culture. My youngest sibling, age 8, began an introductory Spanish language class this year and while living in the US I employed my free time to tutor him; his enthusiasm for learning sparked my eagerness to help him and learn with him. |
Tutoring Approach: Through my own experience with learning a foreign language I have found that an approach which combines cultural and lingual lessons can prove most effective. Music, current events (in the form of online or physical clippings of magazines and newspapers), literature, and even television programs can all be employed to foster a familiarity with a different language. Above all, I find that tailoring the tutoring session to the individual and approaching the tutoring session with enthusiasm, patience, and positivity will help the tutoree reach their ultimate goal. |

| Personal Description: Hello. I am 26 studying sustainability, peace, and systems sciences. I was born and raised in Japan and left at 18 to study in the United States at the University Of California Santa Cruz. I graduated with honors in 2005, and was hired for 2 years as a Teaching Assistant for the university. The role of a Teaching Assistant is to facilitate smaller classes to explore the topics in more detail, resolve questions, and support the students. I enjoyed that experience very much, and had many opportunities to experiment with creative and fun ways to learn the target materials. During my position as a Teaching Assistant, I also developed a curriculum and engaged with a student-centered pedagogy for a course organized by students on Sustainable Living. That lead to a class I co-initiated on our university's relationship with nuclear weapons. The central elements of both classes revolved around students teaching each other and utilizing academic research for tangible actions. With the right scaffolding and goals, students as a community of learners can create an extremely enjoyable and meaningful learning environment that exceeds the university standards. I believe we all are continuously learning in diverse ways, and most of the time all we need is a little direction and a positive environment to maximize our educational experience. At the moment, I spend most of my time cooking Japanese food, translation, reading and writing in Japanese, and doing research. In addition to academic tutoring, I am open to teaching Japanese cultural classes such as traditional Japanese food (beyond sushi), tea ceremony, and other topics. Best way to contact me is via email. The phone number requires and extension number when the dial tone changes. 213 is the extension number. |
Teaching Experience: UNIVERSITY My first experience teaching a class at a university was during my junior year as a psychology student. My interest in education has steadily grown since, leading to 2 years of working as a Teacher's Assistant at the University of California Santa Cruz in the psychology and education departments. Courses include, Introduction to Psychology (psyc), Personality Assessments (psyc), Human Sexuality (psyc), Introduction to Educational Theories, Introduction to Education: Socio-cultural theory, and intermediate Japanese. I have also designed and implemented courses on sustainable living, nuclear weapons, and student facilitated action-research education. SUMMER SCHOOL For 3 summers I worked as a English guide for Japanese children in an all-English speaking summer language immersion program. We aimed to develop the seeds of English in these Japanese elementary schoolers by using simple repetitive vocabulary, gestures, and minimal translation. FREESKOOL I have also taught a community organized Japanese cooking class and tofu making class. |
Tutoring Approach: Student directed with guidance where needed. I am comfortable with both a casual approach or a structured approach depending on the student's needs. We will assess what is working and what is not, and how the tutoring can be most effective. I hope to help develop appropriate study skills, and explore with the student what is most needed in the situation. In any learning endeavor we are always learning about learning, and I hope to bring this metacognitive element into the tutoring session. |

| Personal Description: I am a very friendly, patient person. I am originally from China. I enjoy teaching and studying languages. I also love cooking and travelling. I have studied at Universities in both China and Japan and I have also worked in both countries in various fields. I have worked for a trading company in which I had to translate from Japanese to Chinese and vice versa. Now I am living in Wales and looking forward to helping people to improve their language skills. I promise that I will do my best to help every student of mine to make great progress and achieve their language goals. |
Teaching Experience: I taught Chinese full-time in Japan to students of all ages and I have experience of teaching Japanese to foreigners in Japan (native English speakers that visited Japan to teach English). Due to my teaching experience and living and working in Japan for over 10 years (I am a fluent speaker of Japanese) I am able to teach both languages. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a friendly, patient teacher that teaches to the needs of each individual student. I am a native highly educated Mandarin speaker with no accent (many Chinese speakers have a very strong accent due to the influence of their local dialect on their pronunciation), therefore, I teach students clear, pure, natural Mandarin. Pronunciation is a very important part of the Chinese and Japanese language and I am very able to help students improve in this area alongside other key areas such as grammar, listening, reading, writing and speaking. I focus on improving students' weak areas by tailoring my lessons to meet the needs of each particular student. I have very high quality textbooks that after many years of research I believe are possibly the best available to improve students' language skills. |
