Teaching Experience:
I taught English as a Foreign Language to both adults and children in Turkey in 2007, in both classes and individual tuition for businessmen. I also am a co-trainer for a martial arts class at Graveney College, Tooting; my students there range from 12 - 18. Tutoring Approach:
I have a student-centred approach to teaching. My preferred method is to firstly carry out an analysis of the student's strengths and weaknesses, then to choose a topic and use a dialogue-based method to instruct the student. For language teaching, I try as much as possible to use authentic material (eg magazine articles, newspaper clippings, novels etc) in order to expose the student as much as possible real situations where they will encounter the target language. I also like to incorporate audio-visual material (e.g. Films, news bulletins etc).

Personal Description:
I am a 29- year old mature student studying BA Honours Translation with Italian and Spanish at Swansea University. I have recently returned from 6 months studying in Granada, Spain and last year I spent 4 months working as a translator in Brescia, Northern Italy.
I thoroughly enjoy my degree, as well as all aspects of language. I particularly pride myself on my keen sense of grammar, spelling and punctuation. I read a lot about language and linguistics, as well as continually improving my grasp of Italian and Spanish.
I have studied Italian for 12 years and thanks to my work placement in Brescia I am now fluent. Although I have studied Spanish for just 3 years, my university classes are very intensive and my time in Granada has helped me greatly.
I work as a freelance translator and last year was part of a project translating a 26,000 word spoken memoir. This was a challenging and valuable experience.
Outside of university, I enjoy cooking, walking in the countryside of the Gower peninsula, Pilates and seeing friends.

Teaching Experience:
Currently I have 5 tutees with whom I have been working for between 2 months and 3 years, aged between 12 and 36 years old. Some of my tutees want to be able to have a simple conversation in Italian, while others like to concentrate on grammar or problems they have encountered in school or university.
I have also tutored several people in preparation for TEFL courses as my understanding of grammar is excellent.

Tutoring Approach:
I like to ask the student what they have particular problems with, or what they would like to concentrate on (e.g. conversation, grammar) and then centre on those areas. I have always found it useful as a student of foreign languages to be able to relate grammar problems, for example, to real-life situations so I use this technique, along with role-play, quite often.
I know that some of my tutees feel I am more approachable because I am still a student myself. I also feel this way, having had some terrible tutors in my life who had forgotten what it was like to study!
I try to keep up to date with curriculae from primary school age right up to university level so I have an understanding of the subject areas being taught to all ages.

I have always been very keen on learning foreign languages. I learnt English when I was a child, I learnt French at school and I started Russian few years ago.
As a student, I have always been very aware of how didactics and teaching method plays a crucial role in teaching a foreign language. Despite that, some of the worse experiences I had as a student, were that ones where the teaching of foreign language was reduced to the teaching of grammar. While the conversation skills were either not practiced or badly practiced.
Therefore, when I started working as a teacher of Italian language, I tried all my best not to replicate the bad example I had in my past as a student and, on the other hand, to practice and improve the good practice which I saw.
Because of that, I have always been very good at teaching and, especially in not getting people bored.
According to me, learning a foreign language must be a very enjoyable and active practice otherwise learning is unlikely to be effective.

Tutoring Approach:
The main benefit I bring outside my experience with language is my enthusiasm for them and the fact that as a student myself I offer a different approach than the classroom teacher. I found this helpful in retaining my interest in languages when I was in school and I think that kids would find me more approachable in the way I found my Spanish assistant in school more fun and easier to relate to when I was in school. I like to use film and music as a learning tool as people generally relate to these better. However I also recognise the importance of grammar and being a student myself have developed methods I still use to understand it more easily and in greater depth. The most important thing in languages is relating to them and developing the motivation to learn them, the methods around this come easily with some guidance motivation is created.

She was willing to continue her studies of the Italian Language and improve both her oral and writing proficiency. She succeeded in doing both and achieving relatively high standards of learning.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach whilst tutoring is very practical and outgoing. I like to keep a communication notebook in which the student is asked to write a weekly contribution in the specific language taught. This not only enables the student to get a "feel" of the language (which, in my opinion, is enhanced by handwriting), but it also allows both the tutor and the student to witness the concrete improvements and weak points of a person's proficiency. however practical, I believe that languages need to be studies intensely, passionately and constantly. I thus am reasonably demanding in terms of homework and I am capable of making adjustments in times where the student might be overloaded or overstressed by normal school work.
In subjects other than languages I am usually as demanding but not as structured. Subjects such as History and Economics leave room for discussion and development of various individual of global theories. Dates are only indicators, the events that happen can be interpreted in multiple ways, and i tend to keep that as a resource whilst tutoring.
