| Personal Description: I'm a graduate primary PGCE student that has worked previously for a central government procurement department. My strengths include mathematics and science, however I am more than capable of getting students to achieve progress in their written, spoken and reading of English studies up to KS3. My teaching style engages the learner to better understand the context in which they apply their learning rather than simply teaching them the rules to past tests. Giving students access to a variety of methods of how to problem solve is also important to creating flexible learners which will set them in good stead for higher education. Most students enjoy my lessons, especially when I theme lessons on a topic that they are interested in. |
Teaching Experience: Year 1 (5-6 year olds) all subjects Year 3 (7-8) all subjects Year 2 (6-7) SATs year. Experience of teaching reading, writing, speaking and mathematics. |
Tutoring Approach: I am now completely avaialable during the summer months and I understand how important it can be for some children to continue their learning throughout the summer holidays. I will be most flexible to meet the needs of your child. Above eveything else, I believe that every child has the potential to learn and make progress so a positive and procative attitude is something I would bring to every tuition lesson. |

| Personal Description: My name is Miles Smith and I am 30 years old. I have worked as a teacher since graduating from the University of Warwick in 1999 with a degree in History. At the end of university I studied English Language Teaching in Spain through Oxford House College, where I received my TESOL Certificate, before heading to South Korea. I spent several years in East Asia, principally in Taiwan, where I worked as a teacher of young and very young learners (using English as the medium to teach all curriculum subjects), and then later specifically teaching adults at an exam preparation school. During this time, I gained considerable experience as a teacher trainer as well. Currently, I am doing my MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics through King's College in London. I will be based in Norwich from the beginning of September. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified English Language Instructor with 9 years experience teaching English both in the UK and also overseas. I have worked with a wide variety of age groups, from very young children to adults and provided one-to-one tuition for both children and adults, in both a general way and also academically for entry to university. My skills are mainly related to language, and how children or adults can access texts and discourse that is complicated for them. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is guided by a more general philosophy related to teaching, which is that lessons and instruction need to be adapted according to the needs of those learning. I believe in being well-prepared, but also in being flexible and creative, and helping my students help themselves. I think that a voice of encouragement is very important, but that equally important is realism and practical advice. I tutor intensively, and do not believe in wasting time, or leaving a session without feeling as though something has been accomplished or achieved. Saying this, I am far from being a stern master. I would consider myself open, relaxed, confident and engaging as a teacher, as well as being knowledgeable about my particular disciplines. |

| Personal Description: I am currently in my final year of Medicine at King's College London University. I am a reliable, hard-working and approachable individual who believes strongly in the importance of education. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and find it hugely rewarding when I see my tutees achieve their maximum potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring informally for three years and have mentored students for the last eight years. I worked as a teaching assistant in Sibuyile Secondary School, South Africa in 2007 where I taught English, Maths, Science and History. |
Tutoring Approach: I very much believe in active learning and although this varies with every subject, I have generally found that practice makes perfect so I do like to set many exercises for homework and carry out tests at the end of topics to assess the progress we have made. I do try to get my students to think 'outside the box' and hence endeavor to make my lessons as interesting as possible. |

| Personal Description: My name is Harriet and I am 20 years old. I am currently studying at Bristol University after finishing secondary school in London. I took a gap year and lived and worked in the USA and then travelled to South America. I received 3 As in my A Levels for History, French and Latin and I am now studying Classics and Spanish. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a tutor from the age of 18 tutoring children of between 12 and 18 years old in the subjects of French, History, Latin and Spanish. I also taught English in Argentina during my gap year for a company called Travellers Worldwide. |
Tutoring Approach: I would start with finding out the area or areas in which the tutee is having problems. From there I take a certain approach depending on the ability of the person. Usually I find it helpful to learn vocabulary for languages and would give them homework learning vocabulary (as much as I think they could handle). I also go over important grammar constructions and teach on how to write sentences and essays. |

| Personal Description: I am a very polite, friendly person with a range of different experience teaching. Hobbies and interests include; film, music (listening and playing), football, and kayaking. I am very flexible in that I attained a varied selection of high standard GCSE's, allowing me to offer support in multiple subjects if required. My A-levels are all based around Physics and Maths so this is where I offer A-level assistance. I am currently studying for a Joint Masters in Maths and Theoretical Physics at The University Of Bristol. When I leave university I plan to do research into The Higgs phenomenon and relativistic quantum field theory. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored many people through GCSE's, and have seen a vast improvement in the standard of work produced and more importantly an greater depth of understanding. I recently took part in the nation wide student associates scheme where I received on the job training from current qualified teachers and school staff. This experience gave me a great deal of insight into various teaching methods and allow me to modify my teaching style depending of the needs of my tutee. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring depends almost entirely on the subject and the tutee, although I tend to have quite a structured approach. I can offer aid with current courses (i.e. going through homework or giving explainations). Alternately I can give revision help. If it is required I can set additional work (i.e. problem sheets, internet research assignments). |

| Personal Description: I am a recent graduate from the University of Lincoln with a 2:1 graded BA (Hons.) Degree in International Relations. Thus my knowledge base covers politics, economics, history, sociology and criminology. I also have extensive IT experience as well as A Level English, French, History and Drama. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching qualification, however, I have experience in tutoring small groups of pupils (aged 13-15) gained throughout my A Level studies, and I am perfectly willing and able to extend my tutoring experience to students aged up to 18 years. |
Tutoring Approach: I take a proactive approach to tutoring. Familiarising myself with the student's curriculum, and assessing their skills and weaknesses in relation to the subject. In my own experience of learning, I find doing practical tasks (such as writing a book report) to be of far more benefit than simply reading a book and never looking at it again. I therefore prefer to engage students in task-based learning in order to enhance their skills. |

| Personal Description: I graduated from Durham Univerity with a First Class Honours Degree in History in 2005. Although I do not currently work in a history-related role, my interest in the subject remains strong and I read history books on a variety of topics on a regular basis. My specialist subject at university was 20th century history, in particular modern American history (my dissertation was on Martin Luther King), the Cold War, the Second World War and the rise of Hitler. I also studied Chartism extensively. I am an easy-to-approach and friendly person who is keen to pass on my knowledge and interest in the subject to others. My current job involves the writing of lengthy bid submissions and as I such I am also available to teach English and reading to younger children. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified swimming teacher (teaching adults and children) and so I am used to teaching for a wide range of ages and finding new ways of explaining things to suit individuals. At university I worked as a history and english tutor and also as a swimming teacher for disabled children. |
Tutoring Approach: I have an enthusiastic, bubbly and friendly nature and I believe that people learn the most when they are enjoying the subject. As such, I try to make my lessons inspiring and tailored to the individual. |

| Personal Description: I am 23 years old, and I'm studying for a PhD in Politics at the University of Manchester. I passed my Masters with distinction (in International Politics) last year, and also hold a First Class BA degree in Politics and Modern History. I am passionate about education and my subject and want to help pass on my skills to others. Outside of University I run a project with local homeless people in Manchester and like working with different types of people. |
Teaching Experience: I have three months experience as a tutor at the University of Manchester, teaching international politics to undergraduate students. This involved leading group discussions and learning exercises, as well as holding one-to-one sessions on a weekly basis. I gave extra guidance sessions around exam time, and was responsible for marking and giving feedback on assessed work. In terms of private one-on-one tuition I have experience tutoring several students in English, including adult literacy, GCSE and non-native learners. I am confident in my ability to adapt to different learning styles. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a flexible approach which is student-centred. I believe that each person learns differently, and before tutoring I would have an informal chat about which approach would suit the student. I would then tailor exercises and feedback as appropriate. I think that students should get as much feedback as possible to show where they are progressing. |

| Personal Description: I am studying Portuguese, Spanish and History at the University of Nottingham where I have just finished my second year. I grew up bilingual in Italian and English as I am Italian and enjoy learning more about languages, therefore Portuguese and Spanish were a natural step for me to take. I am enthusiastic about languages and feel they are important for everyone to learn whether for general interest, to learn about different cultures or to improve employment opportunities. I am a highly people orientated person. I enjoy meeting new people and understanding different points of view. This has been a strong part of my interest of language and subsequently travel. I am an active person who enjoys sports, going out with friends, current affairs, reading and travelling. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored a year 8 pupil last summer (2008) for a month before I returned to Nottingham with the start of my university second year. |
Tutoring Approach: The main benefit I bring outside my experience with language is my enthusiasm for them and the fact that as a student myself I offer a different approach than the classroom teacher. I found this helpful in retaining my interest in languages when I was in school and I think that kids would find me more approachable in the way I found my Spanish assistant in school more fun and easier to relate to when I was in school. I like to use film and music as a learning tool as people generally relate to these better. However I also recognise the importance of grammar and being a student myself have developed methods I still use to understand it more easily and in greater depth. The most important thing in languages is relating to them and developing the motivation to learn them, the methods around this come easily with some guidance motivation is created. |

I particularly enjoy seeing a pupil master an area that had been previously inaccessible to that pupil and sharing the joy that is felt. Most of my teaching experience has been gathered working with SEN pupils and I am well aware of the need to be consistent, patient, creative and supportive when tutoring - all qualities that I possess in abundance. |
Teaching Experience: 2004-Present: Head of English/History, Mill Hill County High School, Oak Hill Campus (Specialist EBD school), East Barnet London 2004 Jan-2004 Jul: teacher of English/SEN, Lea Valley High School, Enfield London. Specialist Sports College and mixed secondary school catering to over 1000 pupils, 45% of whom are statemented as having SEN. Sep 2003-Jan 2004: Teacher of Geography/SEN, Wandle Valley EBD school, Carshalton Surrey 1999-2003: Teacher of History/English/Citizenship, Charlie Smith High School, Kingston Jamaica |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer not to be overly intrusive. I will guide and support pupils as much as possible and give them as much resources as they need. However, i do believe in encouraging pupils to learn at their own pace and within the constraints of their respective learning styles. I believe in empowering my tutees to 'discover' and to solve problems with my help as opposed to being totally reliant on me for the answers. |

| Personal Description: I'm a recent graduate of the University of Sussex where I studied History with electives in film studies. My final year also had a particular focus of literature and philosophy. I have recently moved back to the Cambridge area and am currently saving money in order to move abroad and teach English as a foreign language. I would describe myself as friendly, confident, organized and patient. All characteristics which I would argue are very helpful to tutoring. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst at college I took part in a tutoring scheme in the upper sixth, where more experienced second years could impart techniques and tips to first years as well as help with more specific problems and queries. I have recently had the opportunity to observe teaching at a local language school in Cambridge, in preparation for teaching abroad. During my final year at University I participated in revision and dissertation workshops where groups of students take it upon themselves to get together and help each other through with advise, as well as direct help such as proof reading. |
Tutoring Approach: I would take a very student based approach to tutoring, beginning with assessing each tutees particular strengths and weaknesses, as well as trying to asses how to get the best results out of them, as it is quite often the case that each individual has a different way of learning. Then working from the demands of the curriculum I would feed off my own experience and knowledge of the system to help the tutee achieve the best possible results. |

| Personal Description: A very enthusiastic teacher with a passion for all subjects that I teach. Playing hockey for City of York is what I love doing during the winter season and then going for long runs around the Knavesmire. I also enjoy singing in choirs as I have a great love of singing and music. I also play saxophone and recorder. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified Primary School teacher. I have been teaching for almost three years now. I began as a supply teacher, teaching children across KS1 and KS2. I have since taught Year 4 for the past two years and Year 6 regularly. I have a wide variety of teaching methods to help students develop their learning skills and succeed in the classroom. I like to use ICT, in particular PowerPoint presentations to engage students more in their learning as well as visual aids. My expertise is in Literacy and Numeracy. I use Phonics to help students with their reading as well as in their spelling in their written work. I like to use lots of Speaking and Listening and drama so students can engage with their written work. In Numeracy I teach number, shape, data handling and measures. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe children deserved an individualised learning curriculum. I like to tailor the Numeracy and Literacy curriculum to children's specific needs so that they benefit fully in their learning. When children are working on a piece of work independently I believe that having background music makes it a soothing learning environment and it gets the best out of children. I assess where children are at in terms of their Literacy and Numeracy and then develop their learning from the stage that they are on. I like to link Numeracy and Literacy with other topics such as Science, History and Geography so that it is a memorable learning experience. |

| Personal Description: I am a 20 year old student at the University of Nottingham studying a BA in English and American Studies. My particular passions lie within the field of literature and writing (one of my hobbies). I am currently embarking on a creative writing course and so constantly learning new writing techniques. I feel that my position as a student gives me a great advantage in communicating with my pupils and allows me to have a young, vibrant and up-to-date view on teaching. It also means I am able to relate to exam pressure and help the pupils prepare adequately for these. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked with children in many of my jobs. Most importantly I was a Nursery and Kindergarten Classroom Assistant which enabled me to teach children in a wide number of disciplines. As well as this I have gained a TEFL qualification and taught English abroad. I have also held nannying positions in the past few years. I have also helped children in the younger age categories with learning difficulties. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that an important part of tutoring is held with the tutor to inspire their pupils and draw out their ability to learn and succeed. I believe a passionate approach to the subject that is both enjoyable but structured is the key to success. Setting work around the subject is important and appropriate work will be given. |
