| Personal Description: I graduated from Edinburgh University in History and Politics with the highest marks in the graduating class. I have since completed a Masters in American History and a PhD on the African American freedom struggle. I am an active researcher, working on social movements and gender in the civil rights movement, as well as revising my PhD dissertation as a book. I specialise in American History, but can also tutor British and European History, as well as giving guidance on essay writing and exam preparation. |
Teaching Experience: I have one year's experience teaching first year university students, making the crucial bridge between A Level and University students. I have worked extensively with students with disabilities and have a good awareness of reasonable adjustments. |
Tutoring Approach: The direction should come from you, the student. In the first session, we will determine where your areas of development are and what you hope to get out of tutoring - exam preparation, essay help, dissertation writing and so on. History is as much about personal development, skills building and essay writing as rote learning, so sessions will focus on putting learning into practice, through essay plans and presentations. I will provide feedback on drafts for essays and assignments. |

| Personal Description: I am a qualified primary school teacher with 15 years experience working in schools in Eastbourne. My main subject is Art (I have a degree in ceramics) so much of my teaching is through creative, visual, practical and kinesthetic teaching whereby my pupils enjoy their lessons and are enthused into a love of learning. I am also involved in the Eastbourne Art scene and paint at home when I get the chance. I am friendly, fair and holistic in my approach . I have two children (9 and 11) whom I try and fit my work around and feel I could offer a positive tutoring experience to children and their families in this area of teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I qualified in 1993 with a post graduate certificate in education after having been a self employed potter in Bristol exhibiting my ceramics. I have co-ordinated Art, Maths and played an active role in early years play and learning with all the necessary knowledge of the primary curriculum including the Foundation Stage. I have taught many children with E.A.L. and have a sound knowledge of special needs teaching using methods such as Makaton signing and Widgit symbols to enhance children's understanding. I would use the Numicon system to support primary maths though am more familiar with the Key Stage 1 age range as this is what I have taught mostly over the last few years. I am familiar with SATS and have been on many courses over the years on all subjects. I particularly enjoy history, art and maths and could teach very basic French too. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in encouragement, boosting self esteem and making tutoring interesting, as I have seen what boredom, frustration and poor engagement can do to young children. They need to be switched on and confident in what they do in order to achieve. I always start at a level a child can succeed in and am aware that sometimes you have to change your approach depending on the child. I have a bank of subject and topic ideas suitable for this age range and have been able to think on my toes over the years. |

| Personal Description: I recently graduated from Queen Mary and Westfield College, part of the University of London, with a first class Honours degree in English Literature. I am passionate about literature, particularly from the nineteenth-century, history, music, and travel. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored informally on several occasions, assisting friends and family members with their education. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that it is easier to learn when you are passionate about what you are being taught. It is important to try and make the subject relevant to the student, using their own interests as a way to encourage enjoyment of the education process. Patience is a virtue, of course, and students are to be helped as much as they need, and given as much time as is necessary to achieve their aims. |

| Personal Description: I am a young person who is at the end of a two year spell out of education that has included working at Merrill Lynch Investment Bank (Junior Risk Manager), the City of London Corporation (Admin. assistant), the Co-operative Labour Party (Junior Policy advisor) and at the London Nautical School as a voluntary teaching assistant. It has been an enjoyable time in which I have gained many life skills that have enabled me to grow in maturity leaving me well placed to go succeed at university. I have decided to study Politics and History. This is because I am interested in being a policy adviser after university, and I feel History as well as Politics is an important base for any policy adviser. Two of my many pastimes are debating and sport. I am currently a debate tutor to several students, and I enter competitions regularly myself. Currently, I am in the worlds top one hundred in terms of debate rankings. |
Teaching Experience: For the first six months of 2009 I worked with children as a Teaching Assistant at the London Nautical school. This has enabled me to shadow different teachers, so as to gain experience on various teaching styles. My time as a Teaching Assistant has enabled me to understand which methods are best used to make communication with young people easiest in difficult as well as calm situations. I am also a one on one debate tutor to several City of London Girls School students. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to set homework to the students I tutor so we have something to briefly go over at the beginning of every lesson that allows me to judge their progress. I then like to break the lesson down into groupings so the student has a target of what they should have learnt by the end of the lesson. To refresh their memory in between our next session I set homework on the topics learnt in the lesson. I am a very calm and patient person, having learnt to always keep my cool from the many difficult situations I have found myself in in the past two years. Making sure I get my points across in a clear and concise manner is something I am able to do well due to my skills as a debater. |

I am happy for parents of young students to be present during the lesson. I endeavour to provide regular progress reports. My Entrance Exam classes focus on entrance to the bar and can cover BVC applications; mini-pupillage and pupillage applications and pupillage interview preparation. |

| Personal Description: I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies in 2005 and more recently, Wimbledon College of Art, achieveing a 2:1 in Costume Design. I live in South East London working as a tutor and freelance costume designer. I am a passionate lover of the arts in all forms, but particularly drama and literature. For the past three years I have been involved with a London based arts collective What They Could Do They Did , helping to organise events in London and Edinburgh. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as private tutor for four years, working with a range of ages and subjects. I specialise in english and drama but have also taught maths, science, history and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools. I also have experience working with children's drama groups and running arts workshops. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage the pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning! |

| Personal Description: I am a friendly and cheerful individual who has just finished studying the LPC at the College of Law in Moorgate. In 2008, I graduated from the University of St.Andrews with a 2:1 in Ancient History. Whilst it was my intention to pursue a career in law , I have decided to redirect my career towards teaching which I consider to be a more rewarding career. It is my intention to apply for the 2011 PGCE course this autumn. I would therefore like to use the opportunity of becoming a tutor to gain more experience and help students. Learning should not be dull, and I would strive to tutor in a clear but positive way. |
Teaching Experience: This would be my first tutoring role but having been a student for the last six years both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, I have developed excellent communication and presentation skills. From my law studies, I have been taught to tailor communication to suit a client. This skill would be directly transferrable to teaching. My experience as a student would also help me to relate to students and create a supportive learning environment. As an approachable person, I would like students to be at ease and ask any questions they may have. Whilst at university, I helped coach younger players in the University Ladies' Cricket Club and was a university ambassador. Both these roles gave me some experience in encouraging others to succeed and overcome weaknesses. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst I have not tutored before, I have had considerable experience helping individuals from past law work experience at city law firms, and have fresh insight as to what it is like being a student .I would be free to help an individual with tuition starting from the middle of September . Whilst at St Andrews University , I did modules in History of Art, Philosophy, Ethics and Philosophy of Religion so would be comfortable teaching up until first year of university in these subjects. Having studied Ancient History , I would also be willing to assist with classical studies whether it be on the works of Homer or Petronious . In addition to this, at A-level I studied modern, medieval and georgian history. For English, I would be happy to help with English literature. I averaged 73% at St.Andrews University where I completed two semesters of English literature. Whether a student needs a boost before a forthcoming examination or help on a particular topic, I would do my upmost to ensure that the student is reassured. I could also offer tutoring for those doing A-level law. |

| Personal Description: I believe that I posses valuable qualities such as creativity, enthusiasm, discipline and overall approachability that will enable me to become an effective tutor. My university course combined Literary Studies and Social Sciences. The range of courses included texts and articles from Victorian to Pre and Post War literature, Feminist Writings and exploring developing genres in a changing society. My degree was weighted in Literary Studies and in my final year I completed my dissertation in Renaissance Drama which required detailed organisation and planning. For the Social Sciences element of my degree I focused on and around Sociology, using a broad spectrum of subjects which contributed to a third of my degree. Over the last two years I have been living and working in New Zealand. I spent much of my time working as an Operations and Horse Trekking Manager for Buller Adventure Tours. The position I held demanded a great deal of time management as I was principally responsible for the care of the horses whilst also ensuring customer safety and enjoyment. As Operations manager it was my job to co-ordinate with others, who were running different activities, to ensure that everything ran smoothly and safely. Travelling has been very important to me and I believe the experiences I have had over the last 8 years have been extremely valuable to me, and my ability to relate to people and bring out the best in their ability. |
Teaching Experience: During my university career I was selected to participate in 'Students in Schools', which involved visiting secondary schools explaining the benefits of further education. The focus was on interaction with students and sharing my experiences by giving lectures to groups and also in a one on one situation. I have always wanted to work with children and young adults and I undertook my first work experience at Ashgate Croft School, a school for children with special needs. It was interesting to work as a Classroom Assistant implementing varied methods of teaching and play, and changing them to suit the needs of the children I was working with. Whilst volunteering as a classroom assistant at Gorsey Brigg Infant and Junior School my main focus was with a Key Stage 2 class. I interacted with the class as a whole and often worked with my own group of children, managing behaviour and building relationships with both students and teachers. Since returning home from New Zealand I immediately signed up with Select Education and I have been working in Secondary, Primary and SEN schools in South Yorkshire. Through Select Education I have worked both as a Cover Supervisor and a Classroom Assistant but also on a one to one basis as Learning Support Assistant. During this summer I worked at one of the Youth Hostel Association's 'Do it 4 Real', as a Team Leader at an Action Adventure Summer Camp for 10-14 year olds. The experience I gained both in the training prior to undertaking the position and through the work was invaluable and I enjoyed every aspect. I then moved to Inverness and worked part-time at Farr Primary School as an After School Auxiliary, I am enjoying the job greatly, the school is situated in a small community and I am benefiting from the interaction with both the pupils and staff and the training and experience I am gaining. Working part time allowed me to spend time tutoring students, I took students requiring additional help for Standards and Highers and helped them through their exams, with great success. I also took younger students requiring additional support. I am currently studying for my PGDE in English and as I have enjoyed all my tutoring experience I wish to continue this in Glasgow. |
Tutoring Approach: Throughout my teaching experience I have often worked in one and one situations, and have proven I can work well to encourage students and progress with their learning. I have worked in many different schools and situations with children and students and I have the ability to adapt to the individual needs of a student to improve their knowledge in their chosen subject(s). |

| Personal Description: I have just graduated with a 2:i in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford and am about to begin work as a Teaching Assistant in a local school. I then hope to train as a teacher. Given this, and my A-Level subjects, I can offer private tuition in Drama, English, History, Maths and Psychology. I am organised, committed and enthusiastic about all my subjects, and would love to share this interest with others in order to help them enjoy learning and increase their knowledge and understanding. |
Teaching Experience: For my final year project at university, I developed a handout designed to help children think about, and use, reading strategies. I then spent three weeks in a school working one-on-one with 11 and 12 year old readers, teaching them these strategies. As a result, the children' reading comprehension significantly improved. This taught me the importance of helping children to engage with reading and encouraging them to make the most of their abilities. I also gained an insight into the structure of the education system and the national curriculum. Prior to this, I helped teach dance to children between the ages of four and nine, supporting the dance teacher by helping the children prepare for performances, encouraging those who were less confident, and liaising with parents. I also participated in buddy reading and maths schemes. The buddy reading scheme involved working with Year 7 children who were struggling with their reading, providing help, encouragement and a chance to practice reading. Meanwhile, on the buddy maths scheme I worked with small groups of Year 9 students who were sitting their Mathematics GCSE early and needed extra support. Part of my role in the schemes was to engage the children with learning in order to improve their understanding and enjoyment of Maths and English respectively. This developed my communication skills, as well as my patience and sensitivity with regards to others' learning processes. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor, I would tailor sessions to meet individual student's needs and interests. My approach would aim to increase their understanding of the subject in question, emphasising an enjoyment of learning. I would also focus on developing an interest in the subject being tutored and its links to other related areas. In order to best achieve this, I would create a relaxed yet structured environment, with interactive sessions to engage the student, encouraging them to think imaginatively and for themselves whilst also providing guidance. I would encourage each student to challenge themselves academically and to debate in order to improve both their examination technique and their wider academic development. |

| Personal Description: I have freshly graduated from the University of Sussex with a BA HONS in Philosophy and English Literature. I feel I am easily qualified to teach English language and literature up to and including A level where I myself achieved an A grade. I am very eager to start a position where the rewards are couched in human educational and social development rather than simply in 'perks' or commission. I am the kind of person who can carries himself well in social environments and am good humored and enthusiastic. I like to think I transfer that to the people I work with. |
Teaching Experience: I have had experience working with children at a community center in Cornwall. This required the ability to engage young children in various arts and crafts projects. I also tutored my younger brother through GCSE English language in which he achieved an A grade. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to thoroughly appraise myself of a given candidates syllabus and marking criteria beforehand and spend one on one time demonstrating how course material relates to that criteria. This enables a candidate to approach assessment with something like a formula, method or checklist which allows them to maximize their grade potential. |

| Personal Description: I am a 22 year old Architecture student at the University of Brighton. I was previously enrolled as a Humanities student at Sussex University but decided to change to a more creative and vocational course. I have been consistently teaching children and working as a youth worker since the age of 13 and recently spent a year working as a teaching assistant prior to starting my current degree. I am a patient, friendly, outgoing person with a passion for teaching and find I relate very well to children of all ages. I have experience working with those with special needs as well as children on the autistic spectrum. I am flexible in the subjects that I am willing and able to teach, so please don't hesitate to enquire as to other topics not listed in my profile. I also have an Enhanced CRB check from 2008. |
Teaching Experience: Several months employment as a teaching assistant at Brighton Montessori, working one on one with a five year old autistic boy. My role also involved teaching other children in the class, who ranged from 3 to 6 years old. A year of employment as a Play Worker at Fairlight After School Club working with children between the ages of 4 and 14. I was responsible for dozens of children at a time in a very active environment. In this job I built close relationships with many children who often called on me for support with personal and educational issues. Four years part time paid work as a teacher at North Western Reform Synagogue (Alyth Gardens London NW11). I was employed from September 2001 until July 2005, at first as an assistant to a class of 7-12 year old children, however in the last year of my employment I co-taught a class of 12-13 year olds. This role required the teaching of reading and writing as well as history and basic foreign language skills. I spent 5 summers volunteering as a summer camp leader with RSY-Netzer, (The Sternberg Centre, 80 East End Rd). I have held a Loco Parentus status over a hundred or so children (10-14 years old) within a small team of youth leaders. I was responsible for the organisation and running of activities as well as a large degree of teaching in many different subject areas. I also ran many training courses for younger youth leaders. |
Tutoring Approach: I have always found myself able to build a fun and trusting relationship with children and young people, something which is integral to my approach to teaching. I believe that in order to help a child reach their full potential it is important to instill confidence in their ability; to build from their strengths in order to overcome challenging areas. As I am still quite young myself I find that children find me easy to talk to and are willing to engage in a productive and gratifying relationship. I feel it is important to discuss how to improve problem areas with the child as well as with the parents. Crucially, I feel that every child must be responded to as an individual and that one must be flexible in one's approach to tuition in order to cater to the needs of every child. |

| Personal Description: My name is Soufiane and I am a 21 year old Parisian. I live in Wales since the 1st of september and I will stay until the end of june. I learn english in the past by music, movies and practice, and the school method did not help me, and that's why I'd like to share my experience to teach the language of Molire. I love history and I know a lot information in the different period of history. I am actually a student in Glamorgan university in the campus of Trefforest and I live in Cathays. I am very sociable and I like to share ideas and exchange different point of view with people. I love history, movies, books, music, parties, museum, concert... |
Teaching Experience: It's been now 4 years that I work each summer in a hospital in Paris, I worked in different kind of medical services but mainly in re-education. I learn a lot of things there, but the most important thing being to listen people and be here for them and help them. I had a different jobs where I could increase my skills and my way of thinking. I was a baby sitter too with child age from 2 to 10 years old, I had to help them for their homework and teach them few things. I teach sometimes few french rules for English friends at the university but that's all |
Tutoring Approach: Because my experience to learn English in the past, the better way for me to learn a new language is to practice this language with a minimum of bases. The approach is to acquire fundamentals rules to then practice it, one of the approach is by movies and other media such as music. See how french people speaks and then learn and understand vocabulary help by movies is a very good method, I can assure that. Another important point is to speak with the student and know him better, to get the appropriate approach in sort of doing progress in a short time. It is essential to exchange ideas and share point of view, the result would be to make him confortable and give him taste for the language of Molire. Because I know all the period in History, I have enough knowledge to teach and tell a lot of important points on different events in the past. The approach is give him taste by anecdotal story and show to the student the importance of history in our present. |

| Personal Description: I am a student at the University of Bath working towards a Masters in International Education. I'm an American who recently moved here after graduating with a Bachelors in Education from Boston College. I love teaching and working with kids! |
Teaching Experience: As part of my degree, I taught students from age 5 - 13. I also have plenty of experience working one on one through tutoring sessions with students who have a first language that's not English. On top of this, I was a lead teacher and assistant program director for an afterschool program for students aged 3 - 13. |
Tutoring Approach: My tutoring approach is similar to my teaching approach. I think the most important thing is to ensure that the student is interested and enjoying what they're studying. If a student is not interested in the material then they're not going to really learn it, plain and simple. I also have a personal philosophy that if one of my students doesn't understand something than it is my problem and not theirs. My job is to teach and if the student struggles then I need to change my approach. |

| Personal Description: I have just finished my first year at university after taking a two year spell out of education which included me working at Merrill Lynch Investment Bank (Junior Risk Manager), the City of London Corporation (Admin. assistant), the Co-operative Labour Party (Junior Policy advisor) and at the London Nautical School. It has been an enjoyable time in which I have gained many life skills that have enabled me to grow in maturity leaving me well placed to go on to succeed at university. I study Politics and History. I am currently Vice Chair of a new young persons political think tank called New Turn. You can see evidence of my writing ability on its website, newturn.org.uk/articles/2010/05/post-democracy-revisited. |

| Personal Description: Hello, I am a 23 year old from the Old Trafford/ Stretford area of Manchester. I am a recent Law graduate from Lancaster university who is fond of reading, debating and discovering new things. I would say I am quite lively, not too difficult to get on with very ambitious but also with an equal dash of a patience for I am a patient individual. Although I am admittedly not fantastic at sports I do play badminton and football from time to time I can play a range of sports but those tend to be the main two. I am a massive fan of education and self development so I tend to be never too far away from reading a book or learning something new to further myself. |
Teaching Experience: I have mainly gained a lot of my teaching experience tutoring younger siblings and assisting the junior year students either at college or University with areas which they either required extra help on or further knowledge. Although my experience does seem some what limited I am confident that the contribution which I have made to those who I have helped has been substantial in helping them to progress onwards to the next stage and beyond. As such I would hope to expand this towards any student who desires to take me on board and to progress until they are ready for the task at hand. |
Tutoring Approach: I begin my approach with an analytical conversation with the student, parent or both in order to address in person individual to assess strengths and areas where we can develop a plan of action. I will aim to take each stage step by step until both you and I are satisfied that we are confident in understanding and explaining coherently the relevant information. I will be professional but understanding as patience dictates, most importantly any work set during the session will be wholly relevant, comprehensible and creative in order to match your needs. |
