Personal Description:
I am a friendly and approachable teacher and have high expectations. I try to help and encourage my students to reach their potential and enjoy their time with me.

I am aware of any syllabus change and have attended courses run by the OCR, Edexcel and AQA examination boards to update myself.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in a secondary school for over six years until 2006 and since this time have been tutoring full time. I have experience across the 10-18 age and ability range. I am experienced in working with lower ability children, including those who have a Statement for Educational Needs.

However, I now mainly concentrate teaching GCSE and A-level:
I teach both English Language and Literature up to GCSE. I also teach History at both GCSE and A-level as well as Politics at A-level. I am experienced and skilled in exam preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient and caring teacher and before I start with the lessons I discuss with the parent and the pupil their subject weaknesses. I also discuss what they are learning in school not only to give me the ability to help them understand the subject, but also to enable me to know what they want to achieve through my teaching. I give homework and then discuss with the pupil the different ways that they can make improvements so that they gain confidence with their studies. In certain cases I do not give homework as the schoolwork might be heavy.

After each lesson I always make time to talk to the parent to discuss what I have taught their child and tell them what homework has been set. This way the parent, pupil and myself can give immediate feedback.

I have excellent people skills and try to build a good relationship with my students so that they enjoy their lessons.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified primary school teacher with 23 years experience working in schools in Eastbourne. My main subject is Art (I have a degree in ceramics) so much of my teaching is through creative, visual, practical and kinaesthetic teaching whereby my pupils enjoy their lessons and are enthused into a love of learning. I am also involved in the Eastbourne Art scene and paint at home when I get the chance. I am friendly, fair and holistic in my approach . I have two children (15 and 17) whom I try and fit my work around and feel I could offer a positive tutoring experience to children and their families in this area of teaching. I can also offer English tuition for those who may have English as an additional language.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified in 1993 with a post graduate certificate in education after having been a self employed potter in Bristol exhibiting my ceramics. I have co-ordinated Art, Maths and played an active role in early years play and learning with all the necessary knowledge of the primary curriculum including the Foundation Stage. I have taught many children with E.A.L. and have a sound knowledge of special needs teaching using methods such as Makaton signing and Widgit symbols to enhance children's understanding. I would use the Numicon system to support primary maths and am familiar with Key Stage 1 and 2 age range as this is what I have taught mostly over the last few years. I am familiar with SATS and have been on many courses over the years on all subjects. I particularly enjoy history, art and maths and could teach very basic French too. I have recently trained to be a specialist language teacher and visit schools across the county.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in encouragement, boosting self esteem and making tutoring interesting, as I have seen what boredom, frustration and poor engagement can do to young children. They need to be switched on and confident in what they do in order to achieve. I always start at a level a child can succeed in and am aware that sometimes you have to change your approach depending on the child. I have a bank of subject and topic ideas suitable for this age range and have been able to think on my toes over the years.

Personal Description:
I am a professionally trained actor. I have written for numerous publications, with stories and poems published regularly. I am confident with public speaking, since I have been performing in diverse venues for nearly 10 years. I have an MA in Acting and an MA in Theatre & Performance Studies. I have professional training in elocution, pronunciation as well as accent and dialect work.

I am a keen footballer, and believe in the importance of keeping fit and eating healthily. I also love travel, gardening, fixing computers and watching and critiquing films and theatre.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private Tutor since 2007, and am a member of a number of private tutoring companies. I have tutored in English Language, English Literature, Speech, Drama, Acting, Philosophy, Entrance Exams, and most primary subjects. I have tutored Students from all ages and abilities; including adults and teenagers, as well as younger pupils, and pupils with learning difficulties

From Aug 2009 to May 2010 I was a Learning Support Assistant, DeBeauvoir School, Hackney, London.

Main duties included ensuring that students with learning difficulties are both kept up to speed with the general classroom environment, and that this does not disrupt the other students.

Other duties include:
- To provide full time academic and pastoral support to individual learners with learning difficulties, and/or behavioural and social problems.
- To provide academic and pastoral support to all other learners when required.
- To encourage learners to pursue further academic or vocational education.
- To provide behavioural support in class and to teaching staff at all times.

July 2009 - August 2009 I was SEN Assistant at Kentish Town CE School, London

Main duties include ensuring that students with physical and/or cognitive complications are given the extra support they require within the general classroom environment, and that this does not disrupt the other students.

Jan 2009 - June 2009 I was a Cover Supervisor, Neat Education & Select Education, Sheffield

Responsibilities are that of a Supply Teacher, being responsible for the learning and conduct of a whole class of students. Maintaining discipline and focus as well as being at all times a strong leader and role model were essential at all times.

Other duties include:
- Academic and pastoral support to all other learners when required.
- Monitoring attendance of learners and set appropriate targets.
- Invigilating examinations and mark work.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that Tutoring is first about personal connection. Any learning can only be achieved given a certain level of trust, which must be established in order to create a solid platform from which further learning can then flourish. Younger students are most open to absorbing information and should have the chance to take academic information and guidance from a range of people. This enhances the educational experiences and broadens the horizons of a student.

Having myself struggled with poor teachers, or unwieldy subject matter, I know that, with the right teachers, such areas can come alive. More clinical approaches to tutoring further separate students from the learning process. Having experienced one-to-one tuition myself, I have seen the many positives and potential pitfalls the system can bring. These experiences galvanize me and help me in my own tutoring. I relish taking what I have learnt, and the exciting methods by which I have learnt it, and passing that on to other students.

Regardless of the level taught, it is impossible to make real progress unless the student first has engagement and interest in the subject. I see my task as tutor as a process of invigorating the material for those studying.

Personal Description:
I am a professional actor and graduate from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and have been working in the private tuition industry for over seven years for various agencies, most prominently The Tutors Group. Before drama school I worked as a Primary School teaching assistant and drama teacher for two years, after graduating from King's College London with a 2:1 in my BA (Hons) English Literature & Language degree. I went straight to university from Norwich High School for Girls in Norfolk. So I have travelled all the way across England in my pursuit of study! I always wanted to tutor because I knew how I worked for all my GCSEs, A-Levels and my BA, and I was fed up with the media claiming exams were getting easier for kids: teenagers today work super hard, as I did! Tutoring older students also provided a lovely contrast to my Primary School teaching. I am also on the Directory certified teachers for LAMDA examinations.

Teaching Experience:

Dog Kennel Hill Primary School
Teaching Assistant and Special Needs Support
Oct 2008 - Present

During the morning session, I am currently working in a Year One class in this south London school and thriving on aiding the children specifically with their literacy, reading and speaking skills as well as exploring numeracy work.
I lead certain lessons including story time and circle time.
I support key groups of children within the class and am able to use my initiative to plan, deliver and assess their learning in order to encourage progression.
I have vast experience in creating my own resources using ICT, and creating artistic displays to proudly exhibit the children's work.
I have taken courses in Early Literacy Support, encouraging creative and inclusive teaching especially for children with English as an additional language and complex special needs children. I also have training in "Letters and Sounds" Phonics, and "A First Workshop on Autism".
During the afternoon session, I support a child in Year Two with Autism. I plan and prepare all his lessons, working towards targets which I and the class teacher have set for him; these include phonics, counting and social skills. I use music as a reward system for the boy, and his singing has greatly improved his speech quality and communication skills.
I have extensive training in Autistic Spectrum Conditions, undertaken with Southwark, covering various aspects including history, sensory integration and behavioural management.
I work with various children with complex special needs within school, including children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Galactosemia, and have worked closely with speech and language therapists and learning mentors.
I offer one to one support outside of lesson time in the form of music lessons for special needs children; I prepare and provide my own resources and find singing with my students extremely rewarding.
I am in the process of setting up an after-school drama club for Key Stage One students at the school, having directed the infant school Christmas play this and last year.
I have also spent time in Key Stage Two classrooms, focussing on aiding older children with their literacy skills: I particularly enjoyed aiding Year Six students in exploring literary themes and using appropriate critical vocabulary when studying children's literature.

Stage Coach Theatre Arts
Early Years and Drama Teacher
Jan 2009 - Present
I am currently working in the Beckenham Junction branch of Stage Coach: using games and prepared resources, I teach my Early Stages children elementary levels of dance, drama and singing, allowing them to develop their confidence levels both on and off the stage. I have written and directed several productions for the children to perform over the year, showcasing their talents to their proud parents.
Since September I have taken on the role of drama teacher for the elder children aged six to sixteen. Through games, improvisation and text work, my students are encouraged to enjoy and improve their passion and talent for theatre in an open and safe environment.

The Tutors Group
Private Tutor
Sep 2008 - Present
In contrast to my primary school teaching experience, my private tutoring allows me to help young people of an older age and greater intellectual development further their learning.
I teach English Literature and Language, History, Theatre Studies and Classical Studies, from Primary, to GCSE and A-Level, Degree level and beyond.
I aid my students in improving their essay structure, spelling and grammar and discussing key thematic and conceptual elements of their required texts.
I plan and prepare lessons and constantly assess students, ensuring they receive high quality tutorage.

Classroom Teachers
Teaching Assistant
Sep 2008 - Oct 2008
I received thoroughly positive feedback from the schools in which I temporarily taught in the weeks preceding my permanent employment at Dog Kennel Hill; colleagues reported me as reliable, enthusiastic and hard-working, and possessing excellent interaction skills with the children themselves.
I gained vast experience with nursery and reception children, thriving on working with early years.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked as a private tutor for various agencies and also independently, leading my students through 11 plus, 13 plus, GCSE, A Level, Degree level and beyond. I teach English Literature & Language, Drama & Theatre Studies, History and Classics. I also have plenty of experience in working with much younger students (see my CV for details of my classroom and teaching assistant experience) with English as an additional language. I am a confident and enthusiastic individual, with an acute passion for teaching, and have been working with the Tutors Group for over 7 years now. I have worked as a teaching assistant in an Outstanding inner-city primary school, and before training at drama school was planning to take a post-graduate course in primary school teaching, a desire much encouraged by my class teacher and head of school. I have just graduated from my MA in acting at one of the most prolific drama schools in the country (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School); as an experienced dramatic performer and director, I enjoy effectively using these skills to aid children in their learning, leading to a warm, encouraging and happy learning atmosphere. I rapidly and easily create positive, personal relationships with colleagues and children, and believe education should be a creative and inclusive experience for all.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my Ph.D, which was about the philosophy of folly in Shakespeare's plays.

Whereas English Literature, Language and Philosophy are my primary disciplines, I have also taught German and History up to A-Level standard. I graduated with a First Class degree in English Literature and received a high distinction for my Master's degree, which were both from London University. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, which means that I am qualified to teach at university-level.

My ultimate objective is to teach and research at university level. I am a keen individual, who values the arts and humanities. I believe education is not simply a means to an end; rather, it offers exciting and new ways of thinking about ourselves and the world around us.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is fairly extensive and I have taught both in this country and abroad.

For the last two years, I have lectured and led seminars at Royal Holloway, University of London; I have also continued to teach A-Level and GCSE students English, Philosophy and History as I have done since 2009.

In 2010, I designed and taught a course for American university students, which was called "British Culture". This course was, in essence, an history of ideas in this country from the Roman invasion to the present.

My work has been published in major academic journals and my thesis is currently under consideration by publishers. At the other end of the spectrum, as an undergraduate, I worked as a teaching assistant in primary and secondary schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I realise that at Key Stages 1,2, and 3 the emphasis needs to be on passing exams. At this level, I aim to provide an entertaining and relaxed session, which remains focused on providing and reinforcing the information required to pass an exam.

I hesitate, however, to say that my style is informal. I believe that when instructing younger children a certain amount of structure is required. This does not mean that the session needs be short-sighted; rather that we focus on a structured approach to attaining goals in an interesting and fulfilling way. At the higher levels and for mature students my approach is more relaxed.

Personal Description:
I am a young professional with a strong background in volunteer mentoring with children and young people, as well as a solid academic resume. I was home educated (tutorial-based) through primary and secondary school, and went on to study English Literature and History at the University of Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working since June 2011 at Mackenzie School of English, teaching English as a second language to foreign high school students.

Also, I have been a private tutor since February 2011, working with a range of ages and levels in both English Literature and History.

As well as my professional experience, I have been involved in youth work, summer camps, and one-to-one mentoring of young people for the past eight years or so. Working at summer camps has given me experience in both group work - teaching and leading discussions - as well as in one-to-one mentoring. Currently I am involved in a weekly youth club here in Leith, working with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people from the local community.

Tutoring Approach:

Coming from a rather unconventional educational background, I would bring with me a deep passion for the need to create a tailored and bespoke educational experience for each individual young person. I know how incredible my own learning experience has been, instilling within me a value and love of learning that will remain with me my whole life. I would approach tutoring with this same passion. Learning excites and challenges me, and I believe that it has become limited in the classroom at times. When a young person can see someone else passionate and excited about an aspect of knowledge and understanding, the ramifications are huge. Not only does tutoring provide an avenue for this one-to-one mentoring, but I believe it is also the most powerful method of teaching. It is in that bond of mutual regard and respect that true learning occurs. These passions and beliefs are foundational to my approach of tutoring and mentoring.

Personal Description:
I have recently graduated from a Masters degree in drama at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English. Teaching has always been a great passion of mine and one to one tutoring is the most rewarding, in its opportunity for directness and specificity.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for three years and have also tutored drama in schools over the last few years. I have also had teaching experience abroad, teaching English as a foreign language in Indian and African schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make learning fun whilst also ensuring fast and effective progress. I ensure that I get to know my students' ways of learning as soon as possible in order to tailor my tutoring style to their individual needs. I hope to be able to offer a way of learning different but utterly beneficial to the current exam syllabuses which can often seem fairly daunting and rigid on first impression.

Personal Description:
I recently completed a Masters degree in Creative Writing. I completed my undergraduate studying BA Creative Writing and English Literature with 2:1. I'm aware that English and History are complex and intriguing subjects but I firmly believe that a thorough understanding and practise of techniques will enable to provide you with a firm base for any student to succeed. I am keen, conscientious, hardworking and reliable person.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for over four years and currently have twenty students.
I have worked in a high school as a English Graduate Assistant and have had exposure to lesson and administration relating to the curriculum.
I have completed a Literacy Leadership Award and I was assessed on my ability to plan and prepare a literacy activity. I had to show communication and motivational skills through delivering literacy across the curriculum. Having observed teachers, I was able to learn interesting techniques that are used to teach Key stage 3 and 4 students. From this experience, I was taught how to plan and structure a lesson i.e. the starter, an introduction, an interactive main activity and the plenary; how to use verbal and non-verbal communication successfully .These rewarding experiences encouraged me to become an English teacher in the future. I have also worked closely with my peers on A Level courses such as English and History by delivering revision sessions and presenting my ideas on literary texts, articles and academic research.
.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tuition includes a variety of techniques and strategies in order to guide and motivate the learner. I will set personalised targets with my students and their parents in order to achieve the desired results. I also intend to provide you with a personalized programme that is best suited to your individual needs. I'm very enthusiastic and try to make learning a fun experience, using different ways of learning. Also, price can be negotiated.
"She's a good listener. She tries to make people understand something in a way that makes you feel comfortable. She involved everyone in the discussion even the quiet ones and always tries to find new ways of explaining things. Revision sessions were really useful and I think the main reason was because she just loves helping other people whether it is people younger or the same age. Everyone went home feeling slightly more confident about the exam including me. She makes sure that everybody understands even if it has to be explained more than once." (Aarti, 18, student)
"Charnjit has a way of making the impossible- possible. She is patient with her students and will try her hardest to make people understand. She has a way of teaching which involves a lot of group work and a one-one session where she will answer any questions from the stupidest to the smartest. After having few sessions with her I went into my exam confidently. Most importantly, she never gives up on anyone." (Rahwa, student)
"Charnjit's teaching style is unique and possesses many qualities. She is patient and constantly checks for understanding in order to go over things if the topic is not understood straight away. She uses a variety of techniques such as group brain storming in order to get the class involved which is very effective. During our group revision sessions she used this technique which worked well as it got everybody thinking, talking and interacting which was useful when remembering theorists and certain dates. She also categorised the theorists into groups based on their research which was also helpful for revision as it broke down the amount of theorists into smaller groups which were easier to remember. In addition, Charnjit is very good at keeping the class' attention which is very important as a teacher." (Stefanie, student)

Personal Description:
I am a 26 year old Art Psychotherapy Master's student. I hold a degree in Fine Art from Newcastle University and have extensive experience working with vulnerable people. I worked as a support worker with adults and children with learning disabilities, and have held workshops for adults and children in Art. I have worked for the NSPCC, holding assemblies and workshops with children aged 9-11, and worked extensively over 3 summers as an Art Counselor at a summer programme in the USA for teenagers, as well as a Senior Mentor for 14-17 year olds in London. I have also worked at the Baltic centre of contemporary art in Newcastle as a Gallery Assistant, running workshops for young people and their families. As an Art Psychotherapy Trainee I have worked in a therapeutic capacity in individual weekly sessions with children from 4-11 and adult male offenders in the NHS. I am able to teach a varied range of subjects from Art to English and English Literature, in which I hold the highest grade in Cyprus for my English Literature GCSE taken in 2006.

Teaching Experience:

I have excessive experience as a private tutor for children from the age of 4-16. I have taught art and English to children with and without special educational needs and I have worked both in a group setting or individual mentoring sessions with young people, as well as with adults in an Art and Aphasia class. I have taught groups of young people on technique and style of artwork as well as curating and art history classes whilst an art counselor for teenagers. I have also worked closely with primary school children. As both an undergraduate and postgraduate student I have informally mentored several of my peers, proof-reading essays and helping with the structure, writing and formalities of essay writing to a degree standard.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an incredibly friendly, enthusiastic and non-judgemental individual. I am genuinely interested in people and am passionate in helping people find confidence in their own artistic abilities. I love working closely with people and helping them in any way possible. I am open-minded, calm and sensitive. In addition, I am very skilled in traditional forms of art such as painting drawing and photography and keen to use my skills to help others in any way possible. As an art psychotherapy trainee I have worked therapeutically and use this approach to encourage individuals to feel safe to express themselves as well as tailor my approach to meet their needs.

Personal Description:
I am currently in the second year of my PhD at the University of York in the Archaeology Department. My research focuses on British defences and their historical, social and political contexts, in particular York and Hull's city walls from 1550 to 1700. My area of interest is primarily Britain but I have a broad knowledge of European history from the Medieval to modern times. During my education I have studied numerous periods, including Richard II, Medieval England, Early Modern Europe, 19th century German unification, World War I & II, the rise of the Nazis, Native Americans, Vichy France, the Italian Renaissance, the Cold War, English Civil War, Tudors and Stuarts, as well as other areas and periods through my own interest and study.

Teaching Experience:

I taught 15 first year undergraduates for a module within the Archaeology Department called History and Theory. This looked at the historical and theoretical contexts of archaeology and involved a large number of readings and assigned tasks devised by myself for the students, in conjunction with them producing two essays that I also graded. I also partook in an accredited teaching qualification from The Higher Education Academy. This involved producing a portfolio relating to my own teaching and participation in numerous workshops looking at the practical and theoretical aspects of academic teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

Having studied History through GCSE, A-Level, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and now with a PhD I feel that I know what a student requires. Primarily this includes the opportunity to foster their own ideas and thoughts that are then framed within an academic context, based upon independent judgement and application of reasoned arguments. A student must be able formulate this for themselves and not simply taught the "facts" or be spoon-fed information. From teaching at undergraduate level I feel it is important that students are able to challenge ideas but then also themselves then have their own viewpoints challenged. Without the student wanting to learn for themselves it is near impossible to achieve any results, so a large degree of independent learning is required.

Personal Description:
Hello,

I am an open-minded, friendly tutor who is able to see things from different perspectives. I am not long out of university and very much understand what it's like to be a student and the processes and pressures that you need to go through.

I am passionate about my subjects and have studied and loved them all the way from GCSE to Masters level. I take joy in discussing and explaining them to others and have undertaken a wide range of historical and political studies. These include, but are not limited to:

- English history: 1485-1702
- The British Empire
- UK History: 1900-2013
- UK Politics: 1945-2013
- US History: 1776-2013
- US Politics: 1945-2013
- US Foreign Policy
- Germany: 1900-1945
- (Italian) Renaissance Wars 1494-1559
- General European History
- Middle Eastern History and Politics: 1900-2013
- Russian History and Politics: 1801-2013
- Chinese History: 1900-2013
- The First World War
- The Second World War
- The Cold War
- Intelligence networks
- EU History and Politics
- The current euro zone crisis (I wrote my Masters dissertation partly on this)
- Political Science concepts
- Political Philosophy

I have done a fair amount of travelling and have had some incredible experiences. I am a big fan of European languages and speak some Italian, German and French (as well as a bit of Russian).

Teaching Experience:

I have a considerable amount of experience tutoring both history & politics privately. I am comfortable teaching in person or across Skype.

I also have teaching experience in other areas such as music and sport. I attended Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) during my gap year to attain a music diploma and have taught guitar ever since. Additionally, I have taken a course to become a Level 1 tennis coach and as a result have worked alongside local tennis coaches to provide drills and technique improvement sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

As someone who has achieved high As in History at GCSE and A-level (A*s were not possible at A-level at this time), a 2:1 with numerous firsts at undergraduate and a merit average during my masters degree, I am fully aware of the means to achieve high grades. I am very friendly and understand that different students have different ambitions. I start any private tutoring with a conversation about what the student wishes to gain from the lessons. I am always careful to make sure the student is given help to the level they require so they can excel at their current qualification.

In the case of exams, my approach is largely syllabus and exam-technique focused. I will make sure the student does gain a comprehensive, confident understanding of the subject matter, but will want to pass on an in-depth knowledge of what the examiner is looking for. This approach is designed so that the student can best maximise their grades. I am able to help with providing a structured and planned approach if the student so desires.

However I am not a tick-box tutor who is not able to see the bigger picture. I am aware that a proper understanding of the subject is not only vital for overall development but also to achieve the necessary level of confidence a student needs to succeed. I only stress the importance of the syllabus and exam-technique because exams are (largely) grade-outcome orientated.

I look forward to tutoring you if you so wish! All the Best, Richard

Personal Description:
My name is Adam and I am 23 and recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in History. I have studied a variety of topics particularly the past two centuries of British, Russian and American history, but I have also studied Roman, Chinese, and African histories as well as the histories of medicine and science. I am, however, knowledgeable about many other areas of history and able to teach the skills required to study any period.

I achieved an A* and full marks in my final exam of my History A-Level as well as As in Economics and Maths and 10 GCSEs A*-A. I thoroughly enjoy the act of teaching and love to pass on my knowledge to students and see them develop and flourish. Outside of academic studies I am a keen sportsman, playing football, rugby and cricket on a weekly basis.

Teaching Experience:

After achieving my A-levels and leaving school, I returned the following year to help A-level students with their exam preparation and their long essay projects. I spent a week working with students on a one on one basis to give them guidance and practical advice for their studies.

I privately tutored a student from my old secondary school and developed my own skills of working with students as well as providing him the relevant skill-set to succeed in the discipline and he subsequently achieved a high grade in his History A-Level.

At university I have made class presentations detailing key periods in history in which I have specialised and have passed on to classmates the knowledge which I have learned. I have also helped peer review essays and helped several classmates with essay structure and writing skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Each student has an individual style of learning and as such need to be tutored in a unique way which keeps them interested in the subject and stretches them to reach their potential. I am very enthusiastic about the subject and believe that students learn best when they too are able to connect with the subject they are looking at.

I believe that one of the most important skills to learn as a student of history is to be able to write confidently and coherently. Once this skill is acquired, students will be able to rapidly advance to learn the essential skill of critical analysis of the evidence put before them.

Personal Description:
Having achieved 7 A*s and 2 As at GCSE, before 3 A grades (English Language, History, General Studies) and a B in Geography at A-level, I realised education was a field I enjoyed and wanted to pursue. Therefore, I completed an Education Studies and History degree at Durham University, before going on to teach at the hugely successful Bryanston Independent School in Dorset for 6 years (2008-2014). My track record of GCSE and A-level results is excellent with every student achieving at least one grade higher than predicted. I have experience in a variety of units and topics ranging from Medieval Britain and early modern Europe, to post WW2 Britain. However, I specialise in the Tudor period. I'm currently taking a break from teaching to pursue a running career but want to keep my teaching experience up to date. Teaching and tutoring is something I really enjoy and will go back to full time in the future. I believe my various roles at Bryanston, alongside my experience as a top level athlete, enable me to help and inspire students from all walks of life to maximize their full potential and achieve their desired goals.

Teaching Experience:

At Bryanston I started as an academic resident before completing a GTP teaching qualification in History, which included teaching practice in a state secondary school and primary school. Then I completed my NQT qualification before going on to mentor other GTP students and American post-graduate trainee teachers. I taught Year 9 History for 6 years, GCSE History for 6 years, AS-level History for 4 years, A-level History coursework for 3 years. I also taught International Baccalaureate History for a year. I completed a number of continuous professional development (CPD) courses such as implementing and marking A-level coursework, improving sixth form study skills, use of IT in the classroom (iPad apps). On top of this I was a resident throughout my time, in both Senior and Junior boys (assistant housemaster) boarding houses so have extensive knowledge and experience of working with 14-18 students. I was also a tutor (one-to-one) to 12 students throughout the 6 years which involved weekly meetings to ensure they maximised their potential in academic, sporting and pastoral arenas. I also regularly led revision and study skill sessions, particularly during the exam period. My other roles included being Head of Cross-country and Assistant Head of Athletics. I'm also currently in the process of becoming an exam assessor for OCR. This knowledge and experience, as well as my own GCSE and A-level qualifications, allows me to also provide reading, writing and study skills tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer in learning and teaching, rather than teaching and learning. I also believe in assessing students learning styles in order to enable them to learn via methods and processes which they find easiest to understand. Content is obviously important but study skills should be incorporated at the same time. Learning should be enjoyable, memorable and interesting to the extent the student wishes to learn beyond the desire to simply pass exams. I am a huge fan of multi-faceted sessions incorporating visual, audio and kinaesthetic activities, and where possible will make use of IT to help in this regard.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly, calm and patient teacher with a variety of experience that I am able to bring into my classroom by day, and in tutoring outside of school hours. I have worked with students from primary to university level, as well as tutored adult ESL students during my time living abroad.

As a secondary school teacher, I have high expectations of my students and like to push them to their full potential and keen to inspire confidence and faith in their ability. I thoroughly enjoy working with students one to one when I am able to personally tailor teaching to the learner's level at a pace that suits them. I currently work in a successful 'outstanding' school, therefore, I have a very strong English department where I am able to gain resources and skills I can bring to my tutees.

I am passionate about inspiring confidence and belief, and love exploring my subject with others; opening their minds to alternative approaches and guiding the way. I use a lot of humour in my lessons and like to create a calm, relaxed and enjoyable environment and get to know my students as individuals. Having spent much time with a personal tutor at GCSE to overcome my fear of Mathematics as a teenager, I have a personal understanding of the empathy and patience required by a tutor, as well as a passion to enable my tutees to reach their goals and develop confidence in themselves.

Teaching Experience:

After graduating from Roehampton University with a 2:1 in English Literature and Theatre Studies, I went on to work as a Teaching Assistant in SEN working with students with a range of needs, but focused on teaching students with Dyslexia/Dyspraxia, which then became my research focus for one of my assignments during my PGCE teacher training.

I have since taught in a wide range of schools; I left Britain to work abroad in an IB international boarding school, PTIS Chiang Mai, as a Boarding Houseparent and ESL/SEN teacher, as well as tutoring seniors completing their final IB projects. In the evenings, my responsibilities included tutoring boarders aged 9 - 19 for all subjects. After my one year internship, I taught in a British international school for two years, Varee International Chiang Mai, where I taught KS3/4 IGCSE English and SEN and was lead assessor for entrance tests for ESLstudents. I also tutored adult Thai learners English outside of my school hours as part of a language exchange to help me to develop my Thai.

Since returning to the UK, I have taught KS3/4 History and Geography, and now KS3 - KS4 English in an outstanding secondary academy in West London.
I am a flexible teacher in terms of subjects covered, but English/literature, grammar, ESL and study skills are my core areas.

Tutoring Approach:

When I first meet a new student, I conduct an initial assessment to be able to adapt my lessons to the individual needs of the student.
I have very high expectations of my students, so push when they feel like 'giving up', but practise compassion when they need support and encouragement. With confidence and patience, they can find a way.
I may on occasion set small homework tasks (if the student does not have too much with their school already) to continue learning between sessions. I will often ask a student to e-mail this to me before our next session so I can give feedback and work on mistakes for our next session, thus maximising learning in our short sessions.
I have a fun approach to my teaching as this is vital to engage young learners, as well as for my own enjoyment of sharing my passion for my subject.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of SOAS University in London (the world's leading university for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East and the sister of UCL University); in BA Middle Eastern History.

Teaching Experience:

With over two years of tutoring experience, I have guided students from a vast background of abilities and have built up teaching experience by helping them to achieve their best in their 11+ English, Maths, Verbal and Non verbal exams. I have also tutored R.S, English and History at GCSE level, whether it be helping students with essays, coursework or to prepare for their final year GCSE examinations.

I love guiding my tuttees by providing the right form of educational support they need in order to do their best and be happy with what they achieve! What most inspires me is the sole fact that just by sharing my knowledge and personal experiences by tutoring, others younger than me can take it further and succeed in whatever they choose to do in the future. I believe the interpersonal, organisational and various study skills I have gained by tutoring and studying at university puts me in a great position to help students organise their homework and do so efficiently.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is completely personal to my students' needs. I have been told that I am an extremely patient and enthusiastic individual, with excellent communication skills when it comes to children and teenagers alike - which shows when I am teaching and helps immensely in terms of motivating my students. I aim to provide my students with an educational platform where I help them learn efficiently in a relaxed atmosphere.

I gather necessary resources and draw up productive lesson plans to ensure my students get the most out of their lessons with me. I provide them with many resources such as revision packs, past papers and essays I have written and acquired from my studies at Dartford Grammar School and Palmers Green High Independent school free of charge.

In addition, if the lesson runs over the time slot and I have yet to finish teaching what I had planned to teach, I don't hesitate to stay over the allocated time to ensure my student is confident in what they have learnt; and to make sure they are not pressurised by the time limit we have in case they would like to ask me any questions.

Personal Description:
As a recent university graduate, I offer a closer bond with students than most tutors due to the lesser age gap. Many exams that students struggle with are ones that I myself have taken, so I can empathise and relate to issues students face on a better level than older tutors. I graduated in English Literature from UEA with a 2:1, achieved A*AA at A Level in English, Philosophy and History, and obtained 10 GCSEs at A* to A and 2 more at B. I was educated at Wilson's School in Surrey which during my time there was consistently ranked as one of the best boys' state schools in the country, and indeed was at number 1 in the rankings for a few years while I was there.

I am currently working towards an MA qualification with a view to going on to a PhD to pursue a career in academic lecturing and tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

Most of my experience comes from being on the receiving end of teachers and tutors from entrance exam up until university, and understanding their shortcomings and failings and what could have been done better. Crucially, I understand student mentalities and what students want and need at all levels. I have tutored Year 5-6s in Maths and Year 10-11s in English so far. Since joining UK Tutors I have taught a 9 year old in writing skills and a 15 year old in GCSE English.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a fun and friendly way of helping the student to realise their full potential through going over schoolwork, practice papers and other forms of assessment - but critically, I focus on talking with and building a relationship with the student. I don't want them to see tutoring as just another school classroom with another teacher - it should be a fun and intellectually stimulating environment that they enjoy participating in. My experience has shown that if the student is enjoying themselves, they will perform to a far better standard.

I can offer high level teaching in English and History, as well as Philosophy, Critical Thinking and German to an A Level standard, Maths and Sciences up to GCSE standard, other subjects can be discussed.

Crucially, I was a master at dealing with exam pressure and good coursework - I will provide expert tutoring for students suffering from exam stress and help them to format and write essays for coursework. As I did much of the same things just a few years ago, I understand better than anyone what it feels like!

Personal Description:
My name is Liam and I am a tutor for English, History and Latin. Currently on a gap year from my second year of University at Royal Holloway where I read History- I am now looking to expand my experience with different students.

I have a great desire to communicate and interact with others- this is why I went in to tutoring. Using all my travel and personal experience has come in quite handy for inspiring students. This has helped me find interesting sources to make lessons more diversified and varied.

My hobbies include traveling, country hiking and reading.

Teaching Experience:

During my years at Royal Holloway I tutored local students in English and History. Alec and Anne were pupils at the local high school and I helped them understand both their difficulties and the solutions to overcome them. They both performed very well in their A Levels- achieving A's.

I have been tutoring for over a year and a half and have also had experience with younger children through baby sitting.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is professional, tailored and effective. The aim to is encourage pupils and to instil in them a lifetime enjoyment of the subject.

The way I would conduct lessons for English would be very simple, yet effective- the session will be entirely tailored to the student in question. Any point that is not well assimilated will be reexplained and reviewed. The lessons will follow different topics - these can be arranged to suit each pupil individually.
The focus in such lessons is to encourage the student's progression in anyway possible. Small tasks will be given now and then to check on the student's progression.

For students wishing to enlarge their knowledge of English literature (my specialisation being non fiction essays) and contemporary culture, themes can be chosen from different periods of English history and literature and explored.

History lessons will be held in a similar manner with the general aim of not only further knowledge but enjoyment in the pursuit of it. Having a background in history will help students expand on their knowledge and ensure enjoyment, as well as discussion and essay help.
