Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies in 2005 and more recently, Wimbledon College of Art, achieveing a 2:1 in Costume Design. I live in South East London working as a tutor and free lance costume designer. I am passionate about the arts and education and try to combine the two in my approach to teaching as much as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as private tutor for six years, working with a range of ages and subjects, both within agencies and independently. I specialise in english, history and theatre studies but have also taught maths, science, non verbal and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools and have additional experience working with children's drama groups and running arts workshops.

Tutoring Approach:

In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage my pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning!

Personal Description:
My name is Miles and I am 36 years old. I am originally from Plymouth, and went to school at Devonport High for Boys. I have worked as a teacher since graduating from the University of Warwick in 1999 with a degree in History. At the end of university I studied English Language Teaching in Spain through Oxford House College, where I received my TESOL Certificate, before heading to South Korea. I spent several years in East Asia, principally in Taiwan, where I worked as a teacher of young and very young learners (using English as the medium to teach all curriculum subjects), and then later specifically teaching adults at an exam preparation school. During this time, I gained considerable experience as a teacher trainer as well. I completed an MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics through King's College in London in 2009. Since then, I have trained formally as a Primary School Teacher, gaining my QTS four years ago. My family and I live inTavistock, and I am currently working as a Y5/6 Primary Teacher at a school in Plymouth. I am the Head of Humanities, and I take a lead roll in PE in the school, as well as our Outdoor Learning programmes. I have led Literacy in Year 6 for the last two years.

On a personal note, I have a wide variety of interests. I'm a keen runner (as you see in my photo) and love reading and writing. Most non-work time, though, is spent with my family - I have two girls who keep me busy!

Teaching Experience:

I have roughly nine years experience teaching English as a Foreign Language to both children and adults. This has been in a variety of settings. I am currently in my fourth year of Primary teaching. I teach all subjects in the national curriculum, but have particular expertise in English and Maths at primary level, and English and History at a more advanced level.

I have worked extensively as a tutor before, and have considerable experience supporting learners in preparation for formal assessments, in particular the IELTS examination.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is guided by a more general philosophy related to teaching, which is that lessons and instruction need to be adapted according to the needs of those learning. I believe in being well-prepared, but also in being flexible and creative, and helping my students help themselves. I think that a voice of encouragement is very important, but that equally important is realism and practical advice. I tutor intensively, and do not believe in wasting time, or leaving a session without feeling as though something has been accomplished or achieved. Saying this, I am far from being a stern master. I would consider myself open, relaxed, confident and engaging as a teacher, as well as being knowledgeable about my particular disciplines.

Personal Description:
Hello,

I'm a 28 year old from the Old Trafford/ Stretford area of Manchester, I graduated in Law from Lancaster university in 2008 but currently work in Banking/finance. I am an individual who is quite fond of reading, debating and discovering new things. I would say I am quite lively, not too difficult to get on with, very ambitious but also with an equal dash of a patience for I am a patient individual. Although I am admittedly not fantastic at sports I do play badminton and football from time to time I can play a range of sports but those tend to be the main two. I am a massive fan of education and self development. The colossal impact both areas can have upon our lives is incalcuable, as such I tend to be never too far away from reading a book or learning something new to further myself.

Teaching Experience:

I have mainly gained a lot of my early teaching experience through tutoring younger siblings and assisting the junior year students either at college or University with areas which they either required either extra help in or further knowledge. As such I have further developed this over the last four years and I am confident that the contribution which I have made to those who I have helped has been substantial in helping them to progress onwards to the next stage and beyond. As such I would hope to extend this towards any student who desires to take me on board and to progress until they are ready for the task at hand.

As I have progressed over the years, teaching various and numerous tutees, my own personal & teaching experience has grown exponentially year on year. As such I believe I can approach any teaching scenario and offer the required angle to ensure success as a result of previous experience yet I still take each student on a case by case/ individual basis rather than a blanket approach.

Tutoring Approach:

I begin my approach with an informal but analytical conversation with the student, parent or both in order to assess strengths and areas where we can develop a plan of action or just to establish face to face what it is we will be doing in the time we have. I will aim to take each stage step by step until both you and I are satisfied that we are confident in understanding and explaining coherently the relevant information. I will be professional but understanding as patience dictates, most importantly any work set during the session will be wholly relevant, comprehensible and creative in order to match your needs.

I do incorporate digital media or a whiteboard depending on the subject if a visual element is required in teaching. Presentations can be sent via email at any time as well.

*For any LPC students I can also tutor and instruct in Solicitors accounts too.

Personal Description:
I am a 27 year old PhD student at Newcastle University, having completed my MA in Ancient History (Classics Department) at Royal Holloway University of London (2009), and my BA in the same subject.

In my younger years, I lived in Taiwan, my father having worked there, before returning to the UK in 2000. We lived in a British and American expatriate community and I went to school at the Taipei American School.

I am passionate about learning and education, especially in the areas of Classics, History and English (primarily as a second language); it is a joy to be able to impart the same pleasure of these subjects on others and see a students' progression and development.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring GSCE Latin for an examination in June 2015, and have tutored numerous students in all aspects of English - including preparation for QTS assessments, IELTS, business language and academic writing.

I returned from China in August 2012 where I gained a TEFL qualification and taught English as a Foreign Language for a year. During the first half of the year, I taught at a public primary school in Zhejiang province, and during the second, at Aston English School, a training school for students ranging from Kindergarten to Adult.

Prior to my time in China, I tutored a mature student in Latin using the Cambridge Latin course and helped out in the Learning Department of Norwich Castle in Norfolk; I have been consequently CRB checked. During my MA, I coached a Chinese student on her English conversation and grammar. This included weekly sessions exploring cultural and academic topics, frequently involving her dissertation and other areas in her studies. We also attended an event showcasing Chinese culture where we compared and discussed various aspects.

I also helped review, edit and advise numerous undergraduates individually on their dissertations and essays in the Classics Department, and an A level student on his History coursework. April 2009, I also took work experience at Queen Anne's School in Caversham, covering the subjects Classical Civilisation, Latin, Ancient Greek, History and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible and fun approach towards teaching, centering on the students needs and engaging interest and learning through games and activities.

I can help with vocabulary, analysis, essay-writing, language learning, research skills and examination techniques and am happy to assist with any requirements or problems students may have.

I have been tutoring for the last seven years and I have been teaching for the last five years

Teaching Experience:

I am at present a BTEC Chemistry Lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College. I have taught BTEC Forensics at Oakmead, Access to HE Forensics and Regulation of Physiology and BTEC Level 3 Science in Health & Beauty at Bournemouth & Poole College. I have also taught GCSE Human Health & Physiology for 2 years at Oakmead and at Wiltshire College and GCSE History during my placement.

I always try to gain an initial assessment on where the student is. This will guide me on where the student has to improve. While I prepare well for any tutoring session I believe in stretching and challenging the student and I will always ask questions to reinforce the knowledge. My approach is not just giving the student past papers and worksheets but to talk, engage and discuss any problems through in depth questioning so that are there as this will prevent misconceptions and allow full understanding.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm a friendly, highly motivated and intelligent recent graduate from the University of Sheffield. I'm twenty four and have completed Undergraduate and Master's degrees in Geography. I have consistently been a high achiever. My Degrees were completed with First class honours and Distinction, whilst I gained all 'A' grades in my A Levels. Since graduating last year I have invested my energies working for the Centre for Recent Drawing in North London as a curatorial assistant whilst building up my freelance tutoring work. I have a passion for art and am also a keen cyclist, enjoying long cycle rides out to Brighton or further afield. Furthermore, I am also preparing my thesis, completed at Masters Level, for submission to an internationally reputed academic geography journal.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst at college I participated in a scheme linking with local schools teaching basic numeracy skills. Since graduating I have built up my private tutoring, teaching Geography, Politics and English Literature up to A Level. However, I believe the best experience that I have is my own, recent experience of the education system, from A Levels to a Masters Degree. I am used to current syllabuses, and most importantly, I know how to succeed.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient yet enthusiastic tutor. I tailor my tuition to each individual tutee, looking at what goals each person wants to achieve and working out the best way I can help in their attainment. I will research the particular syllabus of each of the tutee's courses, tailoring my teaching to it. Importantly I have access to up-to-date syllabuses so all my teaching will be relevant. I also have access to exam papers and mark schemes to practice exam technique. I am an experienced editor, having copy edited published fiction. Therefore I am an accomplished proof reader of essays and can give excellent suggestions on how to improve essay writing skills.

Personal Description:
I am a private tutor based in Edgbaston, Birmingham. I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BA in English and Classics. I have been tutoring for 3 years, in which time I have established a great track record, helping a wide variety of pupils from many backgrounds achieve their best in KS2/11+, GCSE and A Level English.

As I have recently completed secondary and further education and consequently understand both the structure and nature of the work required, the problems faced by students who need some extra help, and what is required to get the very best out of students and syllabi.

I indulge various academic interests for example, 18th Century Literature (particularly Augustan satire), Milton, Shakespeare and my knowledge and expertise of the 'standard topic' areas for GCSE/A Level can not only help students to reach the highest marks, but also radically improves their learning experience .

Personal Description:
I am a 2011 Politics Graduate at University of York. I'm applying for a PGCE to commence in August 2012 with the goal of becoming a secondary and sixth form teacher in History and Politics. Having had to work hard to achieve top grades I understand firsthand the difficulties and struggles that go on throughout both the GCSE and A-level processes. The pace is fast and often bewildering. Having spent time assisting in classrooms in York on a voluntary basis, I recognize that by communicating to smaller groups the immediate concentration amongst the otherwise chaotic classroom was instantaneous. I should hope the effects would be amplified on a one-to-one basis and real progress can be made through this time. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to assist people in something so important in their lives. Throughout the year I will be increasing my experience within the educational sector with more classroom experience and continuing coaching the game I love, rugby, to the U12's.

So if your finding it difficult to make sense of things do not despair assistance is out there, more specifically here. I look forward to facing any challenges that there may be and I am confident that our time together will be most rewarding.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently employed by Yarm School and have to date completed two weeks as a History and Politics teacher. After the half-term I will continue this work as a Politics teacher, delivering classes to the Upper Sixth. The work has involved 5th and 6th form teaching, requiring me to resource, plan, deliver and assess a range of topics. The feedback was most positive, having been successful in a range of areas, from the delivery of lessons required to address a highly competent 'top end', to the preparation of pupil folders for an imminent inspection. I feel that I swiftly adapted to the many and varied demands of school life, including pastoral tutoring, record-keeping, parental contact requirements, departmental meetings, as well as co-leading extra-curricular excursions.

I have also spent several weeks shadowing lessons at York College (an independent Sixth-Form institution) and at Yarm School, a private secondary school in County Durham, whilst completing my degree. I have also delivered several presentations on behalf of a local charity, Justice First, to raise awareness on the plight of asylum seekers. This experience also involved classroom discussions with primary school children and sixth-form pupils on this issue.

Tutoring Approach:

I will require a sample of the tutee's work before the first session. Each session is adapted according to the needs and ability of the tutee. Sometimes this can call for livening up the subject material to make it more engaging. Other times this requires a clarity of thought through the confusion. I can be as patient or energetic as is required and I take it as my personal goal to find a way that best communicates to each individual. When it comes to exams it is a matter of knowing what the examiner is looking for and making sure you know how to demonstrate this adequately.

I look forward to assisting you through this time

James

Personal Description:
I'm an enthusiastic and hardworking individual with extensive academic and teaching experience. I have studied for up to eight years at university, mainly in politics and sociology, and have an excellent academic record. I was awarded a PhD scholarship at the University of Westminster in 2011 and am in the fourth year of my studies. Prior to that, I was awarded a scholarship to study for an MA in political philosophy at York University, which I completed in September 2009. And prior to that, I studied politics and sociology at Leeds University and gained a prize for the highest mark in my graduate year, out of a pool of over 200 students.

Besides my academic work, I have worked for a number of think-tanks as a researcher on a variety of subjects, from economics to geopolitics. Working for think-tanks in and around Westminster provided me with a good understanding of public policy making and advocacy.

I also have a lot of experience of voluntary and charity work and enjoy a range of hobbies, including the guitar and a number of sports. I enjoy travelling and have embarked on a number of trips. in 2006 I studied for a year at the Middle East Technical University as part of an Erasmus programme. The experience of living and studying in a different country for such a long period of time was as fascinating as it was intellectually stimulating. Before going to University, I also took a gap year and embarked on a six-month journey throughout Latin America, traveling largely by land from Argentina to Mexico. During the trip I lived with a family and taught English at a school in Bolivia. The experience was exhilarating: it opened my horizons, gave me a strong sense of independence and fuelled a desire of mine to further explore the world.

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience of teaching and this spring received a university award for teaching excellence, voted by the students themselves. Over the past three years I have worked as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Westminster on the first year module "Introduction to Political Theory" and the second year module "Political Research Methods". The work involves planning lessons and tailoring them to the needs of my students, teaching and facilitating debate in class and providing students with advice regarding their university work. I also have extensive experience of marking assessments and dissertations which stands me in good stead to give advice to university students.

Additionally, I have a TEFL qualification and before going to university I taught English for three months in Bolivia. I've since taught English in Israel and the Palestine. Furthermore, I worked as a guitar teacher for a number of years, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This involved structuring weekly lessons and working with people on a one-to-one basis. I also have vast experience of giving presentations, lectures and seminars both at university and in the workplace.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to make the tutee as relaxed as possible and to tailor lessons to their interests and needs. Well structured and planned, the lessons proceed logically and the contents are explained as clearly and concisely as possible. Discussion and debate are actively sought. I also provide advice on generic academic skills such as researching, crafting an essay and delivering presentations.

Personal Description:
A top performing student myself, I have fresh experince of excelling in interviews and school examinations and work with younger pupils (and three little sisters) on a daily basis. Having obtained a place at Oxford University to read Law and achieved three scholarships for exceptional performance in secondary school entrance exams as well as an A* in A2 Maths, English and History, an A in A2 Philosophy and 10A* GCSEs, I understand what exam boards want from candidates right now.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored two Key Stage 3 pupils in Maths and English and three Year 11 students in Additional Maths. As the eldest of four siblings, I also have plenty of experience helping with KS1, KS2 and KS3 schoolwork!

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies, depending on the tutee but generally I believe dialogue is essential to effective learning. I prompt tutees to explain and explore what we learn as we learn it so that studying is fun, effective and increasingly tailored to their needs. Equally, I consider repetition and minor but frequent assessments crucial means of committing important information to memory, improving exam technique and building confidence. While I appreciate the importance of detailed and honest feedback, I take pains to encourage rather than criticise, emphasising areas of improvement rather than weakness so that the tutee does not become despondent and lose interest.

Personal Description:
I am French, having grown up and attended school and University in Paris. In 2008 I moved to England to work at the University of Nottingham as a lectrice; I then obtained the PGCE and have been teaching French, Spanish and History in a local secondary school for 3 years until I decided to start studying again. I also obtained the CAPES to teach English as a foreign language in 2011. I am currently studying for a PhD in modern history at the University of Nottingham, but am keen to keep teaching during my research. I am married to an English man, and enjoy reading, music and films as well as sharing the wonders of French cuisine with my husband!

Teaching Experience:

I have taught French and Spanish up to A-Level for the past 3 years at Toot Hill School, and have also taught French at the University of Nottingham for a year, concentrating on speaking skills.
I have also tutored students for A-Level in history, as well as teaching the Ancient History GCSE course at Toot Hill School for two years.
I have a wealth of experience working with children, teenagers and adults alike (my husband is English and I am doing my best to drum French into him!), I have tutored privately in France for three years before moving to England, teaching English as a foreign language and have also worked as a translator.

Tutoring Approach:

I adopt a friendly, enjoyable approach to teaching, with the belief that promoting a love for learning is the key to the success of my students. Whenever possible, I use examples from the culture (songs, films, cartoons) and history of the countries where the language is spoken to give more relevance to the learning process.
I feel that my wide-ranging academic interests encourage students to locate particular subjects within a wider context, which I find often fosters a renewed enthusiasm for the subject itself.
Regarding teaching languages, I believe in providing a strong and clear grammatical background, but i also encourage students to be more confident and spontaneous in their use of the language, be it orally or in the written form, a system which I found worked very well with my pupils while I was teaching full time.

Personal Description:
Having completed my first degree in French and German at Oxford University last June, I am now in the final stages of an MA in medieval and early-modern history at Queen's University Belfast. Come September I shall be continuing at Queen's in order to undertake a part-time MA in translation.

Teaching Experience:

During the last two years of secondary school I gave frequent tuition sessions in French and German to younger students. At Oxford I gained two years' experience with Jacari, a charity that teaches English to local children of a different mother tongue. I have also given additional tuition to students of GCSE history in an Oxford school.

I spent my year abroad teaching English to pupils aged 10 to 19 at a German grammar school, and have since instructed a number of tutees of ages 8 to 65 in English Language, French, German and Italian.

Tutoring Approach:

This variety of experience has taught me the importance of varying my teaching approach according to the needs and interests of the pupil. Obviously I keep a keen eye on the intended curriculum or goals at all times, but I am used and open to changing from more formal to more informal (i.e. games-based) tutoring methods as appropriate.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my training to become a barrister. I am looking to work as a tutor for the next 12 - 18 months pending the start of the pupillage stage of my training.

I started my legal training as a mature student after many years in finance and have good, pactical business experience.

I am able to tutor in most humanities subjects but in particular, History, English and Law.

Teaching Experience:

In my previous career I was frequently responsible for the training and development of new school leavers.

As a mature student at university I mentored and helped my peers to understand the subjects being taught.

Tutoring Approach:

I am seeking to work as a tutor as I prefer the more intense and tailored approach which can be taken with individual students or small groups of students.

I believe in building a good, solid basis of knowledge and understanding on which the student can develop their own thoughts and theories enabling a full, in-depth understanding of the subject.

Personal Description:
Currently a final year student at Queen Mary, University of London, I have in-depth knowledge in History and Politics. Recently, I have taken a year out to the US to extend my knowledge in American History and Politics. Having studied both these subjects for my A levels, I know what students are going through and what they should expect in an exam. I am also fluent in Cantonese and able to write and read in traditional Chinese.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is largely based on informal tutoring in the form of discussion with younger students. Although I have never taught formally in a classroom before, I believe this should not hinder, but rather, enhance my ability to interact with students, especially when it comes to one-on-one tuition.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to base my tutoring around discussion with the student. I believe allowing the student to wrestle with difficult ideas and understanding them is better than spoon-feeding information. I also think sample essays, resources from beyond the curriculum would be a great help, so that would be a big part of my tuition approach as well.

I am a degree educated tutor with over 5 years working in industry. I enjoy tutoring all subjects, but specialise in Maths, IT, History, Economics and Business Studies. Living in between Blackheath, Lewisham and Greenwich, I am happy to travel up to 10 miles to tutor, as I believe that by igniting interest in education, each child can reach their full potential in every subject.

Teaching Experience:

I have been in childcare and education for over 10 years, including experience as a Tutor, Sunday School Teacher, Activities Assistant and Nanny

Tutoring Approach:

Each child learns in a different way, and this is definitely true for each subject. From Humanities to Mathematics based subjects, I like to teach cause and effect methods to try and help the student to truly understand the subject, not just learn it for an exam.

Personal Description:
I spent Year 7 to Year 13 at North London Collegiate School; after receiving three A grades in Music, History and Lain at A-Level (and an A grade in History at A.S. Level), I went on to read Music at St John's College, Oxford. After graduating with a 2:i, I spent a year travelling around South America and the Caribbean. Upon my return, I now work for several pop-up events companies, which specialise in immersive culinary experiences.

Teaching Experience:

I specialise in:

- Music

- English

- Latin

- History

I also teach:

- Music Theory (up to and including Grade 8)

- Oxford application and interview preparation

- 11+ exam preparation

- Essay and exam technique

Tutoring Approach:

As someone that suffers from dyslexia, I certainly appreciate the variety of approaches to learning and so employ different teaching methods in accordance to the individual student. However, I always first establish the student's initial level of understanding of the subject, as well as areas that prove problematic and simple. From there, it is easier to assess how our time together could be spent most effectively. I frequently encourage students to articulate principles and concepts, as this best demonstrates and consolidates a thorough understanding of the topic. I believe thorough preparation will provide a high level of confidence in my students, and so cover all bases to ensure no surprises in exams. I also try to build my students' confidence by setting regular and achievable goals and targets.
