Personal Description:
I am a young professional with a strong background in volunteer mentoring with children and young people, as well as a solid academic resume. I was home educated (tutorial-based) through primary and secondary school, and went on to study English Literature and History at the University of Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working since June 2011 at Mackenzie School of English, teaching English as a second language to foreign high school students.

Also, I have been a private tutor since February 2011, working with a range of ages and levels in both English Literature and History.

As well as my professional experience, I have been involved in youth work, summer camps, and one-to-one mentoring of young people for the past eight years or so. Working at summer camps has given me experience in both group work - teaching and leading discussions - as well as in one-to-one mentoring. Currently I am involved in a weekly youth club here in Leith, working with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people from the local community.

Tutoring Approach:

Coming from a rather unconventional educational background, I would bring with me a deep passion for the need to create a tailored and bespoke educational experience for each individual young person. I know how incredible my own learning experience has been, instilling within me a value and love of learning that will remain with me my whole life. I would approach tutoring with this same passion. Learning excites and challenges me, and I believe that it has become limited in the classroom at times. When a young person can see someone else passionate and excited about an aspect of knowledge and understanding, the ramifications are huge. Not only does tutoring provide an avenue for this one-to-one mentoring, but I believe it is also the most powerful method of teaching. It is in that bond of mutual regard and respect that true learning occurs. These passions and beliefs are foundational to my approach of tutoring and mentoring.

Personal Description:
I am a private tutor based in Edgbaston, Birmingham. I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BA in English and Classics. I have been tutoring for 3 years, in which time I have established a great track record, helping a wide variety of pupils from many backgrounds achieve their best in KS2/11+, GCSE and A Level English.

As I have recently completed secondary and further education and consequently understand both the structure and nature of the work required, the problems faced by students who need some extra help, and what is required to get the very best out of students and syllabi.

I indulge various academic interests for example, 18th Century Literature (particularly Augustan satire), Milton, Shakespeare and my knowledge and expertise of the 'standard topic' areas for GCSE/A Level can not only help students to reach the highest marks, but also radically improves their learning experience .

Personal Description:
I love history! I have been 'doing' history since I was 14, and it is something that encapsulates me into a whole different world. I have worked as a history teacher at a secondary school for 8 years, and have loved delving back into the past with the older and younger students alike. I studied and worked in archaeology before becoming a history teacher, and found working with real objects from the past was an amazing experience.

At home, I am mum to a nearly 4 year old daughter, and am 18 month old son. Being a mum is both challenging and rewarding and gives me the opportunity to be creative with activities. I am also a member of a local orchestra and enjoy many different types and styles of music. During the summer months, we all enjoy our camping trips to France in our old VW Camper Van, and spend a lot of time touring this country too.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History at KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level for 8 years. For four of those eight years I was Head of Department, responsible for issues such as curriculum, exams and monitoring student progress, so I am experienced in identifying areas of need for students and helping them to progress. I have been very successful with exam results, and have enjoyed guiding tutee's through their exam subjects.
I have taught AQA in the main, but have knowledge of OCR and Edexcel. I have also been a part of the teams of markers for AQA at A-level, and am currently a moderator for the Unit 4 coursework with Edexcel. I have knowledge and understanding what exam boards are looking for in response to exam questions and coursework objectives.

I am also working as a Functional Skills Tutor in Literacy to adults, which is both new and rewarding. This fits in well with my family and I am finding the challenge enjoyable.

I have been tutoring since Dec 2011, and really enjoy the change from class teaching. I have tutored a wide range of students with a wide range of needs, and have taught to all the exam boards. It is really rewarding to set up individual lessons and focus on exactly what is needed, knowing I can offer help and support to students. I like to be well prepared for individual lessons and to make the most of the time we have to improve techniques, subject knowledge and overall exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what really helps students to progress is an understanding of exam technique. Having knowledge of the subject is important, but knowing how to handle it and use it in an exam situation if key to gaining top grades. I like to adopt a friendly and approachable manner with students to encourage focus and progress. I will go through essays and exam questions to identify areas that could be improved, and suggest ways of improving the use of language to make the most of student's knowledge. Giving feedback for written work is imperative to aid progress and this will take a large role in my tutoring.

Personal Description:
A top performing student myself, I have fresh experince of excelling in interviews and school examinations and work with younger pupils (and three little sisters) on a daily basis. Having obtained a place at Oxford University to read Law and achieved three scholarships for exceptional performance in secondary school entrance exams as well as an A* in A2 Maths, English and History, an A in A2 Philosophy and 10A* GCSEs, I understand what exam boards want from candidates right now.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored two Key Stage 3 pupils in Maths and English and three Year 11 students in Additional Maths. As the eldest of four siblings, I also have plenty of experience helping with KS1, KS2 and KS3 schoolwork!

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies, depending on the tutee but generally I believe dialogue is essential to effective learning. I prompt tutees to explain and explore what we learn as we learn it so that studying is fun, effective and increasingly tailored to their needs. Equally, I consider repetition and minor but frequent assessments crucial means of committing important information to memory, improving exam technique and building confidence. While I appreciate the importance of detailed and honest feedback, I take pains to encourage rather than criticise, emphasising areas of improvement rather than weakness so that the tutee does not become despondent and lose interest.

Personal Description:
Having gained three A grades at A Level, and a further two AS, I studied English Literature, Film Studies and Drama at The University of Manchester. From here I went on to study at the London Film Academy where I graduated with a Distinction in Film Making and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I studied Directing. I have subsequently qualified to teach English as a foreign language (TFL accredited by the University of Kingston).

Outside of teaching, I am co-founder of imaginary friends, a young theatre production company with whom I have written, devised and directed theatre for various London venues. I am interested in history, politics and art. As such, I enjoy visiting galleries, sights of historical interest and museums. I keep up to date with current affairs and campaigns and I love to travel. In 2011 I won the Huss-Smickler Prize for poetry.

Teaching Experience:

My experience as a tutor ranges from KS1 to degree level and I am eager to build a rapport with tutees of all ages and backgrounds. I am comfortable teaching English Literature and Language, History, Creative Writing, Citizenship, Government and Politics, Critical Thinking, Film Studies, Drama and Maths. I have also coached many pupils in preparation for the 7, 8 and 11 plus exams. Recently I have been working full time in primary school, preparing Year 6 pupils for the SATS examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly and thorough tutor, committed to unlocking the potential that lies in every student. To do so I feel it is important to create bespoke lesson plans and learning strategies, tailored with care and imagination to the specific needs of each tutee.

Rather than supplying a pupil with answers, I will always encourage a pupil to achieve the satisfaction of finding it for themselves. This method is helpful in committing method as well as material to memory and creates students who are confident in their understanding of what they are studying. It also helps me to understand the way in which a pupil thinks so that I may present ideas in a way that is appealing and accessible to them, as well as identify gaps in their knowledge/understanding.

I encourage 'joined-up-thinking' in my pupils with the aim of equipping them to analyse and improve their work independently, apply the skills they have acquired to other areas of study and cultivate a genuine interest in their subject by realising its relevance to the world outside of the classroom.

Personal Description:
I am a partnered teacher and tutor in the Birkenhead area, also now acting as Chaplain to Birkenhead School on a part-time basis.

I am in my late-40s with interests including sports, classical music, singing, reading and writing historical fiction. All of this makes me sound somewhat of a nerd, but I believe teaching and learning should be fun, collaborative and productive.

I have a 2:1 degree in History (Hons) from the University of St. Andrews, and spent three years doing research for a Ph.D. I have been a teacher for 20 years, being Head of History at a prestigious HMC school in Scotland for eleven years.

Teaching Experience:

I have 20 years of experience teaching History at all levels from KS2 to AS and A2 Levels, also some University Entry including Oxbridge. My main specialisms are in Early Modern History [1450-1750], but I have also taught medieval and modern History periods.

I have taught GCSE [OCR board], AS/A2 [OCR and Edexcel], Scottish Higher [Medieval option]

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is collaborative which means that there needs to be a dialogue between tutor and tutee. This means that I would meet with a potential tutee to assess their needs and abilities, with the first lesson free. I encourage critical thinking and my questioning style is intended to build upon and extend prior learning.

I am willing to provide tuition in

- exam and test preparation
- general confidence issues
- homework marking and general subject support

Please give 24 hours notice of cancellation of a tutorial. I am willing to travel to your home for a small additional charge.
If a homework has been set please email it to me 48 hours before your session so that I may mark and assess it in good time. I will tutor small groups of up to four students.

Personal Description:
I am Scottish, currently living in London since December 2012. I have a home in Spain where I enjoy the outdoor life, in particular riding my horse and walking my dogs. However, my two sons and my little grandson live in London and so I am spending valuable time with them and enjoying city life for a change. I also teach yoga and have recently started a class in Newington Green.

Teaching Experience:

I am a graduate of Glasgow University and a PGCE qualified primary teacher with over 25 years experience. The breadth of my experience includes special needs, in particular with children on the autistic spectrum and dyslexia. I have lived in Spain for several years and have worked in International Schools as Year 3 and Year 5 teacher and also as a private tutor. Having worked extensively as a private tutor with different nationalities I am also experienced in EAL.

I have been working as a supply teacher for the last 18 months here in London so am now well versed in all aspects of Primary Education as it is implemented here.

Tutoring Approach:

Communication, for me, is the key to harmony. As a tutor, I believe in locating where the individual is on his/her own personal road map. Thus I can gain an understanding of what the child/young person's needs are and how they view the world and their place in it. From there we can establish together what their motivation is and so learning becomes an exciting journey. I believe that if children are happy and motivated they cannot help but learn but it is crucial to identify the learning style and communicate accordingly.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and motivated Tutor, and a trained English Teacher with a PGCE from Strathclyde University. I have a working knowledge of the new curriculum for excellence and qualifications.

I am also a professional playwright and I have an Undergraduate in Scottish/English Literature and Language and a Postgraduate in Scottish Studies (Literature, Language, History and Theatre), both form the University of Glasgow.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring English one to one for approximately 10 years, and drama tutoring for 15. I previously ran a theatre company which itself has strong ties with education (workshops) and teacher training (using Drama as a tool to educate), and am kept up to date and involved in the curriculum and new teaching strategies; I am fully disclosed.

Tutoring Approach:

I absolutely love tutoring and am always moved by seeing the difference the support I provide makes. I have a high success rate and the majority of my pupils reach their desired achievement goal. As a testament to this, most of my pupil business is referral based.

My approach is friendly, motivating and always supportive, as well as honest. I am also achievement driven, as this is what motivates pupils. I am here to help you achieve the very best you can achieve.

Personal Description:
I have a great deal of experience in teaching students who have problems with confidence or need the academic study skills to complete assignments, projects or just pass exams.

I have 20 years experience teaching in Further and Higher Education level. I have extensive experience in private tuition at both GCSE and A Level.

My specialist area is in helping individuals to develop study skills and exam skills. Irrespective of what subject you are studying I can help you with writing skills, reading skills and research skills. I am also able to help you develop strategies to pass examinations.

I have wide ranging experience in teaching essay writing and helping students and adults of all ages to complete smaller and larger writing and research projects.

I have a PhD in history (Early Modern), but I have also taught modern history at A level and undergraduate level, this includes modern British and European history, including subjects such as The European Dictatorships, The Cold War, The Spanish Civil War and many aspects of 19th and 20th Century History. I also teach modern politics and I am conversant with the history of political and religious ideas.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified post 16 teacher and have taught a range of subjects in the humanities.

I lived for 10 years in Germany and achieved a distinction in German at undergraduate level. I have taught German for beginners and can teach up to German A level and give advice on German at undergraduate level.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a great deal of experience in tutoring students with low confidence. I can help with improving and consolidating existing knowledge and boosting confidence.

My main aim, therefore, when teaching is to build confidence and encourage students to approach their work with a positive attitude and a 'believe in yourself and you will do your best' style of approach. So the building of self confidence and self esteem is central to my teaching with all students and all ages.

Personal Description:
Hey, My name is Jennifer, and I'm currently a student studying history at university!
My strength is history. Naturally, I'm very interested in medieval history, & Tudor history. I have studied myself a wide range of historical subjects. Which include: the Russian revolution, the French revolution, the Scottish wars of independence, and how to research history: using both primary sources, and secondary sources.

I have also studied sociology. The areas which I've studied in sociology has been: the family, social stratification (class), gender, and the media. I also have a strong interest in sociology. Theorists I have covered include; Marx, Webber, and feminism.

Philosophy, along with history, is another subject which I am passionate about. I've studied philosophy for three years in total:one year at college, and two years at university. Philosophy is a subject which focuses on any, and every area, therefore, there is something for everyone to take an interest in philosophy! Philosophy has been extremely useful to me for all areas of my academic life. It has taught me; how to think, and how to construct an excellent argument. My personal favorite subjects in philosophy are: moral philosophy, and political philosophy.

My last subject, but, by no means least! Is politics. I have studied politics subjects for two and a half years. This has covered areas such as; the Uk government and Parliament, totalitarianism, democracy, the 1940s welfare state, and Machiavelli and Hobbes.

Teaching Experience:

Being a current student I have no teaching experience. However, as a student myself, I know what the pressures of studying feels like, how to study effectively, and I also know how stressful studying can be, therefore I am patient, and extremley understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a laid back attitude. Not lazy however!
Students need to pace themselves, and not stress out.
I am naturally compassionate and caring.

I can get back to any student inquires within a 24 hour period.

Personal Description:
I'm twenty years of age and I will begin my third year reading English at the University of Cambridge early in October. I'm enthusiastic about tutoring because I've experienced first hand the potential to inspire young people to success through encouragement and the fostering of ability; my own English teacher was the reason that I became interested in English literature and eventually went on to study it at Cambridge. But more than this I feel that the subjects I have a knowledge of (as listed below) have made very positive impressions upon my personality, being deeply rooted in culture, ethics, responsibility and rights. I really believe in my subjects and I want to pass that passion on to young people.

To dispel any concern about my background, I am from a low-income, single-parent household. My two years at Cambridge has introduced me to very high level academia and to peers who had a better education (at least on paper) than I did. My experiences of comprehensive school education and world-class university have shaped me into a person who is able to engage with anyone from any background, and I really believe in helping people from Stoke-on-Trent and the Midlands more generally to reach upper-level institutions, in which they are vastly under-represented.

Teaching Experience:

I have very little teaching experience and I will in no way disguise that from you. My only formal role as a tutor was during high school and some of VI form, in which I tutored 11-15 year old children in reading once per week.

I would like to take this opportunity to stress that I have no formal qualifications in teaching and that I will only be available until early October; my sessions would be, in this case, catered toward short-term goals which could be achieved before this time.

Tutoring Approach:

Having no previous experience, my approach would be somewhat experimental, immersive and very much catered to the individual involved.

My view, from experience, is that instilling enthusiasm in the tutee is of paramount importance. Learning by rote or by simply forcing information into someone's head does not tend to engage their creative energies in the writing of an essay, for example. As such, I would hope to take up an approach which is both expansive and thorough in its appreciation of the material at hand; but also effectively explore the curriculum and mark-schemes for the examination(s) in order to achieve effective deployment of the material.

Some samples of how I might teach runs as follows:

-- English --

[Assuming we are working with, say, Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men]

The main bulk of teaching would involve and in-depth exploration of:

- The novel's historical and cultural significance;
- Possible film productions, and how the difference in media has affected reception and portrayal of the story;
- Themes running within the texture of the language: their metaphorical and symbolic significance;
- Reading aloud extracts of the novel to feel the characters and their dialogue rather than confining them to silent reading;
- Creative representations of the plot, its characters and the importance of the work more generally.

In teaching these elements the mark-scheme will have largely been fulfilled from a material perspective. Overlooked elements of the mark-scheme and notes from examiners reports can often unlock the higher grade boundaries for students who are able but simply do not know that they have to include these elements in an essay. These may include:

- A thoughtful, relevant personal response to the work;
- Use of specific types of language, punctuation and grammar according to the level of the examination;
- Producing 'flair' in essay writing;
- Structuring a well-written essay;
- Spelling, vocabulary;
- A focussed response.

These are all requirements which can be trained in a tutee, and are relatively easy to attain through practice and with the right kind of material to deploy. What I propose is holistic and engaging, as well as being designed with a view to developing written technique to access the higher areas of the mark scheme.

This example is largely catered toward GCSE tutoring for English Literature; but I am flexible in the range of subjects that I have knowledge of and in the level of teaching which is require according to the ability of the tutee. My only request is that, should you be interested in having me provide tutoring services, you allow me some time and plenty of information to work with in order to get to know the student and his/her capabilities. I am a fast reader and a quick learner, so most subjects within my remit should be applicable.

Personal Description:
I have a first class honours degree in history. A MA in Medieval History from Durham. I am currently perusing a PhD in Medieval History at Durham.
I am a mature student with children. I understand what it is like to be a student and a mature student. I have excellent writing and analytical skills. My knowledge of all periods of history and historical subjects make me an ideal tutor for post 16 students.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught my children and been part of tutoring groups. I am quite new to tutoring but believe I have all the necessary skills to help any individual approach their work and interests further.
I have experience of public speaking, giving conference papers, extensive research skills and understand the necessary levels of requirement at post 16 education and at university.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to work with each individual to understand the issues or problems they are having. By doing this it allows a tailor made approach that helps the student or individual to think outside the normal parameters and to learn to approach their own work in a more confident manner.
Each student or individual needs to be worked with in way that allows them to feel confident that they can achieve all their aims, and goals and my role is to guide, stretch and help them achieve this through my own knowledge and understanding of the subject and required elements.

Personal Description:
I am a 22 year old graduate with a first class degree in History from the University of Oxford, and I am looking to tutor GCSE and A-Level students, and offer assistance with exam technique as well as subject content.

During my degree I achieved a first class grade in preliminary and final examinations, and I won the Oriel Society Arts Prize for outstanding achievement in first year. I received Oriel college scholarships in my second and third year based on the previous year's work, and also recently received the Shannon Prize for outstanding achievement across my three year degree.

I received very high marks at History A-Level, and 100% in my English Literature exams.

Having been through the Oxbridge entrance examination and interview process, and coming from state school education, I can advise and provide mock interviews for any student considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I gained classroom experience in April 2013, taking a year 13 English Literature class who were preparing for their A-Level exam on Andrew Marvell. I was invited back in September 2013 to give the same presentation to this year's students.

I took part in the Mold Alun paired reading scheme, spending time each day to improve the reading of younger students.

I have helped history applicants to Oxford and Cambridge with mock interviews and advice in 2011 and 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

My priority is to make the subject content engaging and genuinely interesting - a fact or quotation that means something to a student will be much more easily remembered during the exam.

Tutorial sessions will be structured and all relevant content covered, but they will not take the form of a lecture. I encourage students to talk through their own ideas and let their feelings be known. From recent experiences in sixth form and university, the classes with dialogue between tutor and students were always the most enjoyable and most successful.

English: I like to introduce a new piece of writing in each session to prepare the GCSE student for the unseen part of the exam. For A-Level, I encourage the student to make brief comparative remarks between the set text and another work by the same author, which greatly impresses the examiner.

History: As well as covering the content, I like to give the student exam technique and essay writing practice in order that knowledge and facts can be used to full effect alongside general skills of analysis and understanding, which are required for dealing with primary sources.

Politics: I encourage using recent news stories as examples in essays, as these help to make theoretical concepts recognisable and easier to relate to. Showing an up to date knowledge of politics is also impressive to the examiner.

Personal Description:
I hold a BA hons and Masters degree (distinction) in History and Politics from the University of Exeter. I was graded outstanding for my PGCE in Secondary History. I continued this onto Masters Level, completing my MEd last year.

Teaching Experience:

I taught for three years in a selective boys grammar school in Devon, where I worked in a thriving History and Politics department (ranked among the top 10 of History and Politics departments nationally according to GCSE and A Level exam results). I am now teaching History and Politics to A Level at a very reputable private school in Chester, and the department achieves an exceptional number of A*/A grades at GCSE, AS and A level. I am experienced in various examination boards for both subjects including Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge IGCSE. I have taught a range of exam modules, from Crime and Punishment through time, the Russian Revolution, 20th Century Protest, Henry VIII authority, nation and religion to 19th Century Britain parliamentary reform. I am also an Edexcel examiner (marking GCSE and A Level papers) and am well versed in exam technique as well as being able to offer an insight into what examiners are looking for in GCSE, AS and A2 exam responses.

Tutoring Approach:

I work to instill a genuine enthusiasm for History and Politics, as well as developing a sound understanding of the topics covered during tutoring. I use and prepare engaging resources as well as a diverse range of teaching methods, which enable students to learn both the content and the skills needed to succeed in their examinations. It is my belief that tutoring sessions should not just involve the regurgitation of facts on the part of the student; rather, it should empower students with the confidence and knowledge they need to secure the grades they're capable of.

I tailor my sessions to best fit the needs of the students; whether that is through honing exam technique, or gaining an in depth understanding of the course content. I am able to target my sessions to suit all levels of ability.

Personal Description:
I am a private tutor based in south Liverpool, available to give lessons between July and October 2014. I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford, studying English Language and Literature. I specialise in teaching English, History, Religious Studies, and Philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I am a recent A Level student with a good knowledge of the syllabuses and expectations of exam boards. I have experience as a youth group leader between 2010 and 2013.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a rigorous and systematic approach to tutoring at all levels, combining a targeted understanding of exam skills with a broader knowledge of the subjects I teach. I recognise that the skills required to produce a truly distinctive essay or analysis are often drawn from a wider base of knowledge than that which can be provided through school education alone. As a tutor I aim to teach my students how to think independently, be inquisitive and original, and develop a fluid and intelligent written style which will distinguish their answers from all others.
