Personal Description:
I am a teacher at Newcastle University, having completed my PhD in Ancient History last year, and my MA and BA in the same subject at Royal Holloway University of London from 2008 to 2009.

In my younger years, I lived in Taiwan, my father having worked there, before returning to the UK in 2000. We lived in a British and American expatriate community and I went to school at the Taipei American School.

I am passionate about learning and education, especially in the areas of Classics, History and English (primarily as a second language); it is a joy to be able to impart the same pleasure of these subjects on others and see a students' progression and development.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching and tutoring English for the past seven years, and have experience with all levels and all ages. Beyond the basics, tuition has also covered preparation for QTS assessments, IELTS examinations, business language and academic writing.

Over the last three years, I also tutored a student for his GSCE Latin examination (to OCR specifications) both via one-to-one sessions and email/Skype. The teaching and contact lasted for three years, as Latin was an extracurricular subject studied outside of school. He achieved an A* in his exams in the Summer of 2015.

I returned from China in August 2012 where I gained a TEFL qualification and taught English as a Foreign Language for a year. During the first half of the year, I taught at a public primary school in Zhejiang province, and during the second, at Aston English School, a training school for students ranging from Kindergarten to Adult.

Prior to my time in China, I tutored a mature student in Latin using the Cambridge Latin course and helped out in the Learning Department of Norwich Castle in Norfolk; I have been consequently CRB checked. During my MA, I coached a Chinese student on her English conversation and grammar. This included weekly sessions exploring cultural and academic topics, frequently involving her dissertation and other areas in her studies. We also attended an event showcasing Chinese culture where we compared and discussed various aspects.

I also helped review, edit and advise numerous undergraduates individually on their dissertations and essays in the Classics Department, and an A level student on his History coursework. April 2009, I also took work experience at Queen Anne's School in Caversham, covering the subjects Classical Civilisation, Latin, Ancient Greek, History and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible and fun approach towards teaching, centering on the students needs and engaging interest and learning through games and activities.

I can help with vocabulary, analysis, essay-writing, language learning, research skills and examination techniques and am happy to assist with any requirements or problems students may have.

I graduated two years ago from the Courtauld Institute of Art, from where I gained a degree in Art History. Since then I have continued my research in architectural, art and historic subjects through working as a researcher at an international architecture and design consultancy firm. After a very solid foundation in art and architectural history, I now have an insight into the practical applications of such research and its importance in the commercial world.

Areas of particular interest to me include: Manuscripts, Middle-eastern art and architecture, gender studies, institutional architecture, the Victorian Period, 20th century fashion, art theory and modern architecture.

I also have A-Levels in Classical Civilisation, Biology and Chemistry, so I can offer assistance with those subjects up until GCSE level.

Teaching Experience:

I am only beginning as a tutor and therefore have limited teaching experience but I do regularly discuss and impart information to others as part of my job. My role is to share my research findings in the most efficient way possible and I have always received positive feedback relating to my presentations and reports. My seminar contribution at university was also well received.

Tutoring Approach:

I would like to help students to understand the bigger picture, in order to understand the importance of the smaller details. I believe that endless memorising only has a short-term benefit and should be largely unnecessary if there is a real understanding of the context.

Teaching Experience:

In the UK, I have experience tutoring for two years in London, Surrey and East Anglia. I've also tutored students for four years across a number of Canadian universities, such as the University of Toronto.

Tutoring Approach:

For younger students, I assess them on their first appointment to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. I then focus the lessons on the areas they need improvement in, using an individualized approach that is suitable for that particular student. I also help students prepare for examinations, such as the GCSE; in this case I mostly focus on giving them tasks and questions that resemble what they will face on their tests.

For A-level and degree students, I'm usually asked to provide assistance with a specific task. For example, I've helped my students construct outlines in order to structure their essays, answer typical questions that will come up on their exams, and proof read their essays to check content, clarity and grammar. I can also clarify theories that are difficult to understand and help students generate ideas for their thesis.

Experience mainly tutoring younger children, but have done small ad-hoc pro bono tutoring sessions for older children. I specialise in both English and History tutoring, and I can tutor any book or any period for you child. Maths I will be willing to tutor up to GCSE at the most, given the board, and my music and sociology tutoring information can be provided at further request.

Tutoring Approach:

I specialise at being able to tutor online: I feel this means students can maintain studying in an environment they feel comfortable in. Another benefit is that I can document all tutoring sessions - part of me services mean that I will copy up transcripts of all the sessions for both you and your child - this means you do not need to worry about sessions being missed. To ensure you get the most out of my time, I offer my services in blocks of 5 or 10: this means that I can thoroughly cover subjects. For example, if you require emergency tutoring with a book, 5 sessions would enable me to efficiently cram topics, whilst 10 would enable me to go through this more thoroughly with you or your child. How I tailor your blocks of 5 or 10 can be discussed between both you, me, and your child. For documentation purposes, I believe typing during the online sessions can be maximally beneficial: both the child can see what i'm writing, whilst you as the parents can see exactly what is being discussed. However, if you would like me to use voice calling as well as video calling, this is no problem either.

Personal Description:
I am a very easy going 'people-person' and I am incredibly passionate about learning, character building and the sharing of knowledge. Much of my teaching experience was gained as a camp counsellor or during my Masters (an MRes in Humanities) at Stirling (which is also where I undertook my BA with Honours in History with Religious studies). Presently I am doing a part-time PhD in History at the University of Glasgow. As well as being passionate for interdisciplinary learning and educating (I want to be a lecturer one day) I am also a keen musician and sportsman. I have several years of experience working with children (8-12) and teenagers (12-18) through volunteering as a counsellor for holiday camps where I led a variety of lessons such as sports (I have also done some rugby coaching), arts + crafts and learning about literature and various scriptures. I also have considerable experience in aiding with university level and adult learning through auditing seminars and tutorials, giving lectures and talks and convening reading groups.

Tutoring Approach:

As an interdisciplinary academic I always strive to aid - in any capacity I can - in one's own journey towards a knowledge and understanding of a topic or discipline. For my Tutees I can always be relied upon to build an excellent rapport, to be flexible and to deliver a unique and outstanding service. I tend to be very 'hands-on' with my approach to learning in general but I mainly strive to be a guide; to talk issues through with my tutees in order for them to arrive at revelations for themselves. During this process I aim to help with any queries, theories or problems which arise during that said journey. During my time at Elizabeth College I was a cadet leader in charge of 50 or so cadets, this role involved teaching the recruits various aspects of the curriculum, from theoretical to applied learning.
I am also a sailing and Powerboat instructor, this was paid work over the summer, where I would take children, relatively new to the sport, and within a week have them sailing proficiently on their own.
During these activities I would be teaching young adolescent and the occasional 10-11 year old.

-As a one to one student you will always have the undivided attention of the teacher for the entire lesson.
-All lesson plans can be individually tailored to your needs.
-We can spend as little or as long on any given individual topic until it is properly understood. The choice is yours.
-The 1:1 - teacher to student ratio cannot be beaten.

With education a solid foundation of knowledge must be laid before additional levels can be built upon it; otherwise the structure in question will inevitably fail.

Personal Description:
Hello, I'm Sam. I am a 19 year old second year English student at UCL. I attended All Saints Blackheath primary school and Dartford Grammar School secondary school and sixth form. At Dartford I received a fantastic education allowing me to achieve 11 A*s and 1 A at GCSE, and 43/45 points in the IB (the equivalent of 4 A*s at A-Level). The IB required that I took 6 subjects - rather than 4 at A-Level - which was wonderful as I was allowed to keep my learning as broad as possible. I have a specialist knowledge of the IB and so offer tutoring all the subjects I studied at that level (including Classics which is not an option on this website).

During term time I live in Kings Cross, North London. I am happy to travel to surrounding boroughs. I am very flexible in regards to when the tutoring sessions would take place. During the summer, winter and easter breaks I live in Blackheath, South East London, but will still be able to travel to you.

Besides from my studies I enjoy a variety of sports (swimming, tennis, football), as well as writing, reading, acting, and politics. I also play lead guitar in a band with three close friends which gives me a great sense of creative fulfilment and joy.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently tutoring one student through this website for GCSE and IGCSE English. I am also involved in a volunteering scheme called Action Tutoring every two weeks where I tutor poetry at a local state school. This has given me great first-hand tutoring experience.

I was involved in a volunteering scheme called VSU with a local primary school in Dartford. This involved teaching children aged 8-10 certain sports and games as well as helping them with homework. Apart from being great fun this gave me good practice of communicating with younger age groups.

During sixth form I attended History Club, helping year 7s, 8s and 9s plan their research as well as sharing knowledge from my IB history course. Since leaving for university, Dartford Grammar have twice invited me back to advise current sixth formers on their university prospects and provide first-hand knowledge and experience of what to expect at university.

I have also often taught my Dad how to use computer software and technology, which has taught me a great deal about the art of patience!

Tutoring Approach:

I have been incredibly lucky to have a series of hard-working, caring and genuinely inspiring teachers throughout my education. This has had a great influence on me, demonstrating how powerful a tool education can be. I have always wanted a job that in some way benefits society or helps others. This is why I am very enthusiastic to tutor.

My approach to tutoring is personal and dependent on what the student and student's parents are looking for. I am open to change and quick to adapt my style of teaching to the student's specific needs. If the student is preparing for an exam I will look at the components of the exam in specific detail. For example if tutoring GCSE English I would pay close attention to the assessed texts and poetry. If tutoring IB Latin I would prepare lessons on Latin language as well as analysing the themes and characterisation of set texts. As I have completed my GCSE and IB exams very recently, my knowledge of the courses is still fresh in my mind and I have a range of coursework, essays and notes to draw on. However although the final grade is important, I am very keen that the student enjoys learning. I am happy to look at external materials, in addition to the curriculum, that may be of interest to the student.

The lessons would be conversational and relaxed; I want the student to feel comfortable and happy. I am sympathetic and patient with people. I have worked very hard throughout my education and I would carry this work-ethic over into the preparation and organisation of the lessons.

When we first sought her help, our son was coasting through school, under-performing in English and showing no interest in changing it. Tutoring Approach:

I practice what I preach - and I believe that this comes across in my tutoring. I absolutely love learning and studying. I am an enthusiastic person who genuinely wants to help people achieve their potential in their desired field and take great pride in the successes my clients have achieved after sessions with me.

Sessions are relaxed and informal; I create a friendly environment where people want to learn and feel comfortable doing so. I try to be as flexible as possible; I am happy to ramp up the sessions in the run up to exams, but also to scale back during quieter periods and also change days/times on an ad hoc basis. I encourage my tutees to contact me outside of sessions if they ever need any help - you don't have to wait a whole week to speak to me again!

There is, however, a formal element to learning and I do expect commitment and homework will be set on a regular basis (as long as there is capacity alongside school/college/university commitments).

It's not a case of 'one size fits all' and I enjoy working with my clients to help them to understand their best style of learning and to adapt my teaching style as required. Sessions with me can often mean going through past papers and helping with homework to fun quizzes and games!

On the whole, my aim would be not only to teach, but to inspire my tutees and instill a sense of confidence in their own abilities.
