Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies in 2005 and more recently, Wimbledon College of Art, achieveing a 2:1 in Costume Design. I live in South East London working as a tutor and free lance costume designer. I am passionate about the arts and education and try to combine the two in my approach to teaching as much as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as private tutor for six years, working with a range of ages and subjects, both within agencies and independently. I specialise in english, history and theatre studies but have also taught maths, science, non verbal and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools and have additional experience working with children's drama groups and running arts workshops.

Tutoring Approach:

In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage my pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning!

Personal Description:
I am a History graduate with both Bachelors and Masters Degrees. For my first degree in History I received 1st Class Honours and have completed a Masters in Imperial and Commonwealth History at King's College London with Merit. I am an aspiring history lecturer, who is currently researching a PhD, with a passion for teaching and learning. My abilities as a writer have been consistently commented upon by many lecturers and colleagues. I am enthusiastic, reliable and friendly.

Teaching Experience:

I have several years teaching experience, having started as both a private tutor and teacher at a summer school in 2010. I have covered a large range of exam boards and periods at both GCSE and A-Level.

Tutoring Approach:

Above all I hope to impart my own passion for history to my students. History must be insightful and relevant and it must enlighten the student to the nature of human society. Thus I do more than simply teach to exam.

However, I have a strong knowledge of the current curriculum at GCSE and A-Level, understand what is required by both exam boards and universities and I am adept at teaching exam technique. Lessons will focus on personal discovery as much as imparting knowledge and technique. The enhancement of the written and verbal skills needed to convey ideas and create an argument are central to my teaching.

Personal Description:
After leaving school, I studied at Nottingham University for a BA in Music, then for a MA in Theology from the London School of Theology. I am about to undergo a research masters leading to a PhD. As well as studying, I work in a secondary school teaching RS and supporting students with a range of behavioural and emotional difficulties. My own interests are principally in theology, philosophy and politics, but also the arts, culture and social work. I am married, have one child, and am a keen football fan (Manchester United).

Teaching Experience:

Part of my current work is teaching Religious Studies and I have also worked as a freelance tutor at various points over the last few years for students studying Music, English, History, Philosophy and Ethics, at a range of levels.

I have worked with extremely bright students but also have a lot of experience of working with students with special educational needs.

Tutoring Approach:

Education is about more than being able to pass exams, although this is obviously important! I have worked hard for my qualifications and belive in disciplined, productive study; however for some students getting the highest possible grade is not necessarily the most important thing. Each person is an individual with different strengths and weaknesses, so I try to structure how I teach around individual needs and goals. When teaching I also believe that giving people self confidence, an ability to think critically and an enjoyment of the subject is an important part of helping them to improve.

Personal Description:
my name is Giulia, I am 28 years old and I come from Italy, where I gained a BA (Hons), with the equivalent of a First, and a MA (again, with the equivalent of a Distinction) in Classics (universita' di Udine). I am currently studying for a PhD in Classics at Royal Holloway, University of London.
As a foreign student, I also hold a TOEFL certificate in English.

Teaching Experience:

During my undegraduate program I have tutored four students from secondary schools in the form of private lessons, mainly in Latin and Greek, but also in English, Italian, history and philosophy. I can also help pupils and students develop a good method of studying in other art-based subjects like English or history.
I have taught at Royal Holloway within my department: I have run Greek literature seminars with first year Classics students in Octo/Nov 2010, and in 2011 and 2012 I taught Beginners and Intermediate Latin.
I have also been employed as an Italian tutor within the continuing education program at Strode's college, Egham.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is easygoing but also rigorous. I have a solid knowledge of Latin, Greek, Italian and English based on a 10 years school and university experience.
I am a very patient person who likes to prompt the students to reach indipendent thought and critical reasoning. For this reason, my method of teaching/tutoring is often based on discussion and confrontation, more than just lecturing. As far as primary school level is concerned, I do not have previous experience but I am keen to work with pupils as well: classical civilisations still have a great appeal also to the young ones and this aspect makes them very enjoyable at every level. I can also help students of every age develop an efficient method of learning and studying using the skills they already have.
Being still a student is a bonus, as I am well aware of what students' fears, needs and expectations are.

Personal Description:
I am a 2011 Politics Graduate at University of York. I'm applying for a PGCE to commence in August 2012 with the goal of becoming a secondary and sixth form teacher in History and Politics. Having had to work hard to achieve top grades I understand firsthand the difficulties and struggles that go on throughout both the GCSE and A-level processes. The pace is fast and often bewildering. Having spent time assisting in classrooms in York on a voluntary basis, I recognize that by communicating to smaller groups the immediate concentration amongst the otherwise chaotic classroom was instantaneous. I should hope the effects would be amplified on a one-to-one basis and real progress can be made through this time. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to assist people in something so important in their lives. Throughout the year I will be increasing my experience within the educational sector with more classroom experience and continuing coaching the game I love, rugby, to the U12's.

So if your finding it difficult to make sense of things do not despair assistance is out there, more specifically here. I look forward to facing any challenges that there may be and I am confident that our time together will be most rewarding.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently employed by Yarm School and have to date completed two weeks as a History and Politics teacher. After the half-term I will continue this work as a Politics teacher, delivering classes to the Upper Sixth. The work has involved 5th and 6th form teaching, requiring me to resource, plan, deliver and assess a range of topics. The feedback was most positive, having been successful in a range of areas, from the delivery of lessons required to address a highly competent 'top end', to the preparation of pupil folders for an imminent inspection. I feel that I swiftly adapted to the many and varied demands of school life, including pastoral tutoring, record-keeping, parental contact requirements, departmental meetings, as well as co-leading extra-curricular excursions.

I have also spent several weeks shadowing lessons at York College (an independent Sixth-Form institution) and at Yarm School, a private secondary school in County Durham, whilst completing my degree. I have also delivered several presentations on behalf of a local charity, Justice First, to raise awareness on the plight of asylum seekers. This experience also involved classroom discussions with primary school children and sixth-form pupils on this issue.

Tutoring Approach:

I will require a sample of the tutee's work before the first session. Each session is adapted according to the needs and ability of the tutee. Sometimes this can call for livening up the subject material to make it more engaging. Other times this requires a clarity of thought through the confusion. I can be as patient or energetic as is required and I take it as my personal goal to find a way that best communicates to each individual. When it comes to exams it is a matter of knowing what the examiner is looking for and making sure you know how to demonstrate this adequately.

I look forward to assisting you through this time

James

Personal Description:
I have recently finished an undergraduate degree in English and French at Oxford and next October will start a masters in French and English comparative literature at Oxford. . At school I obtained 4 As at A Level and 11 A*s at GCSE. I am passionately interested in the arts, especially literature, and enjoy passing on my knowledge and enthusiasm.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored a wide range of subjects, abilities and ages, from primary school to adult education including A levels and GCSEs. I have also prepared candidates for Oxbridge interviews with an 100% success rate. While living in France I taught English as a foreign language and have taught French conversation to non-native speakers. Finally, I was a subject mentor at university, helping younger students with their work.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a student finds it easier to learn when they are interested in their subject. Therefore, I attempt to foster an interest in and curiosity about learning. I enjoying teaching through different mediums, for example looking at film or TV adaptations of a novel or play. Moreover, as a recent student myself, my personal interest is fresher and therefore more stimulating than tutors who have been teaching the same old stuff for years.

Personal Description:
I have an MA in Medieval History from King's College London and a BA(Hons) from Queen Mary University of London. I am currently employed as a Humanities teacher an an independent college in Croydon. I have a passion for history, and love to read and write. I am also very sporty, and am interested in football, swimming and eventing.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work as a Humanities teacher - specialising in History - at an SEBD college in Croydon. I currently teach years 7-13 in small groups and one-on-one sessions. Outside of this I have tutored groups of pupils at AS and A level in History and Literacy Skills. For those studying at university level, I have tutoring experience with those who are studying Medieval topics, and have provided essay writing technique sessions and proof-reading. I specialise in SEN although have experience beyond this.

I am also a sports coach, and have experience in teaching children and adults in netball and horse riding. This has given me a different perspective when it comes to working with both groups of different ages, and groups of differing abilities. I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed, all that is needed is the correct guidance.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring History I believe that having access to primary texts and a comprehension of background issues of the topic are paramount to achieving an understanding of history. Primary texts allow students an insight into the ways contemporaries thought/behaved, which then allows a greater insight into the background issues surrounding the topic.

There is no right or wrong answer in history, and I think believe this is an element which needs to be stressed, particularly to students studying history at school. Many students feel pressurised to relate just the 'facts' of history, and are not encouraged to read further into issues and interpret this independently. I think that history needs to be made more accessible to students, particularly to those below GCSE level. When tutoring, I try to make it fun and interesting, and encourage independent thinking. History is not just the 'boring facts of our past' but a bloody, engaging, thought-provoking formation of our present.

When tutoring English Literature, I try to help students understand the text as a whole. This is vital as without this knowledge, the intricacies cannot be fully comprehended or portrayed effectively within an essay. Once again, I try to make tutoring this subject interactive and engaging, relating it to issues relevant to today, and encouraging students to think independently.

Personal Description:
I am a director and actor in a London based international theatre company. I studied Drama and English Literature at the University of Bristol and have a passionate interest in reading and research. I previously attended a small grammar school and understand well the strain of academic pressure. I was deputy head girl and received the school prize for English Literature. At Bristol University I graduated with the highest ranking dissertation in Drama in my year group. As well as working as a tutor I have been an assistant director at the National Youth Theatre and love discovering new ways to help young people grow in confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught children right through from primary school level to secondary school leavers. I was a teaching assistant at Northside School Finchley. Recent AS Level and A Level English Literature tutees have improved from C/D grades to A grades under my tuition.

11+ Entry Exams.
English Literature through to A Level.
Drama and theatre studies through to A level.
Art and design through to GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

The biggest benefits of one on one tutoring lie in allowing the pupil to feel comfortable, safe and totally invested in. I am here to support the pupil and encourage them to discover their own strengths and to be surprised by their own academic potential. I guide the student towards finding an efficient and effective way of studying. I encourage them to engage their curiosity so that they can discover solutions on their own. I believe this will allow them to become more independent, thoughtful and successful students.

Personal Description:
I am currently a master's student at the London School of Economics and Political Science, studying a Master of Science in History of International Relations. I completed my undergraduate degree in History at University College London receiving a high 2:1.
I went to school in Athens, at the St. Catherine's British Embassy School, receiving 44 out of 45 marks in my International Baccalaureate exams with 7/7 in all the subjects I now tutor.
I have always enjoyed working with young people, volunteering with children through various organisations such as Habitat for Humanity and Camden Libraries since the age of 16. I began tutoring and mentoring while at school and have continued to tutor or mentor in some form every year, working with young people from the ages of 3 to 19. I find the process of helping young people excel academically, very rewarding and genuinely enjoy working with young people.
I am a very friendly, sociable and approachable person with a creative flair, developed through a love for writing and performing. I put my students' academic needs first and strive to help them as best I can to achieve their desired marks.

Teaching Experience:

Summer Private Tutor- 3 tutees
Taught IB-Level and A-Level History, English, Biology, Geography, Theatre Arts - knowledge of different examination boards, including Edexcel, OCR and AQA.
Covered problem areas, explained and gave tips for homework, implemented homework and revision techniques, helped with essay structuring and research.
Went over past paper questions, the best ways to answer the questions and useful techniques and tips to follow. Set timed tasks and past papers to be completed in the class, which were marked for the next lesson.
Gave Extended Essay support: proof reading and improvement advice. Drew on my own my own extensive research skills.
Ensured tasks were varied for each lesson in order to engage the students and keep lessons interesting, upbeat and refreshing. Created a friendly, stress-free environment, focusing on trust and having some fun while learning.
Maintained open communication with the parents so that they were kept up to date with their children's progress.
All tutees boosted their marks in the subject areas taught. One student improved her mark in IB Higher Level History and English A1 from a predicted level 5 to a level 7. Another of the tutees boosted his mark in IB Standard Level Biology from a predicted level 4 to a level 6 and in Standard Level Geography from a predicted level 5 to 6. My other tutee received all A*s in his History, English and Biology A-levels.
Received great feedback from my coordinator about parents being pleased with their children's renewed interest in the subjects they were being tutored.

Tutoring with Team Up (previously the Young Educational Learning Programme - YELP) Nov-Spring 2011 - 5 tutees
Taught GCSE-level History and English Language and Literature.
Provided a straightforward, interesting study technique, particularly for English literature and poem/prose analysis, which seemed to be the most challenging area.
The aim of the programme was to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieving mostly Cs or Ds but also Bs, to reach their full academic potential. I provided plenty of mentoring and focused on fostering a positive attitude towards learning and further education.
Helped students boost their final marks. One student jumped from a B to an A* in English Language and Literature, two from C to an A in History, and one from a D to a C in English.
Received very positive feedback from organisers of the programme, both for the improved results attained, but also for the friendly and fun environment created while teaching.

Tutoring IGCSE - 2008/2009 - 4 tutees
As part of the International Baccalaureate Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme, I tutored IGCSE English Language and Literature, History, Drama, Geography and Biology while in my last two years of school.
I mostly covered problem areas, focusing on past paper practice tasks during the hour-long lessons.
The results were positive, with all students achieving Bs and above in the tutored subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what makes me a good tutor is the understanding that teaching is not just about laying down the facts. It is a process of developing a relationship of trust and engaging the student so that he or she genuinely enjoys learning about the subject. I find that once a student enjoys learning, it is much easier to encourage him or her to absorb the material, performing better in exams. I always try to establish this enthusiasm by varying my techniques, understanding my student's academic needs and keeping the atmosphere friendly yet focused. Every student is capable of boosting his or her marks with the right guidance and with practice. The right guidance involves looking at each student as an individual with specific academic requirements and needs and so I never use a sweeping approach to teaching, rather assessing each student's needs on a case by case basis.

Personal Description:
BRIGHT - EXPERIENCED - QUALIFIED - FRIENDLY
I am an experienced, friendly and flexible tutor available teach English and humanities- I particularly focus on children with language difficulties. I want to share my passion for learning with children who are struggling with their schoolwork, or want help preparing for an exam.

I can come to you, or you can come to my child friendly house in Buckden. I have my own car if public transport links are an issue. Alternatively I am happy to meet in a public place.

I recently graduated with distinction from my MA in Religion & Politics at Manchester University, and I gained a first class degree in Religion & Theology.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored English, English as a foreign language, History and Religious Studies, as well as Philosophy A-Level.
I have passed Preparing to Teach Level 4 BTEC, and have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification.

Tutoring Approach:

My style is very learner-focused and inclusive. All children are different and no one-size-fits-all approach will work for everyone- I am particularly adept at assessing a child's individual learning needs. I aim to motivate the student to learn and be interested in the subject, and I frequently test their comprehension to see their progress, while providing an atmosphere where the students feel comfortable.
I am particularly good at teaching exam technique, which many students fail at.

Some recent feedback:
"James quickly identified my son's educational needs and has already helped with practice questions for his mock GCSE's. In a very short time my son has gained a better understanding of how to prepare and answer questions. He is learning the basics of English all over again, his confidence has grown and he looks forward to each session. James is patient and very knowledgeable in his subject and I would not hesitate to recommend him to others"

Personal Description:
Hey, My name is Jennifer, and I'm currently a student studying history at university!
My strength is history. Naturally, I'm very interested in medieval history, & Tudor history. I have studied myself a wide range of historical subjects. Which include: the Russian revolution, the French revolution, the Scottish wars of independence, and how to research history: using both primary sources, and secondary sources.

I have also studied sociology. The areas which I've studied in sociology has been: the family, social stratification (class), gender, and the media. I also have a strong interest in sociology. Theorists I have covered include; Marx, Webber, and feminism.

Philosophy, along with history, is another subject which I am passionate about. I've studied philosophy for three years in total:one year at college, and two years at university. Philosophy is a subject which focuses on any, and every area, therefore, there is something for everyone to take an interest in philosophy! Philosophy has been extremely useful to me for all areas of my academic life. It has taught me; how to think, and how to construct an excellent argument. My personal favorite subjects in philosophy are: moral philosophy, and political philosophy.

My last subject, but, by no means least! Is politics. I have studied politics subjects for two and a half years. This has covered areas such as; the Uk government and Parliament, totalitarianism, democracy, the 1940s welfare state, and Machiavelli and Hobbes.

Teaching Experience:

Being a current student I have no teaching experience. However, as a student myself, I know what the pressures of studying feels like, how to study effectively, and I also know how stressful studying can be, therefore I am patient, and extremley understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a laid back attitude. Not lazy however!
Students need to pace themselves, and not stress out.
I am naturally compassionate and caring.

I can get back to any student inquires within a 24 hour period.

I am a Spanish postgraduate student doing a MSc in Paleobiology at the University of Bristol, where I currently live. I mainly have anl academic background in Biology (BSc in Biology + MSci in Evolutionary Biology) and I am now expanding my studies in the field. Hopefully I will starting my PhD studies the next Autumn Term.

Teaching Experience:

I have more than 5 years of experience as a private tutor both for Spanish and English students of all ages (from 7 to 30). However, most of them of them were in their teens and first years of University. I have managed also in a satisfactory way tutoring with students with special learning needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe in a relaxed and pleasant teaching environment as the process of learning is controlled in an essential proportion by motivation and emotional mood. Additionally, I am really keen in Science, and in particular actually passionate about Biology. Therefore, as I have also good communicative skills, I feel I can transmit this passion to my students.

Lately, I have become really keen on languages as I am basically living a daily cultural interchange in UK. As a native speaker of Spanish, I could teach the language in a thorough way and virtually managed any level the student may have.

Personal Description:
Hello there! Firstly, thank you for checking out my profile. I am currently a teaching assistant at a primary school. I have a BA (Hons) in Egyptology and Ancient History and I am undertaking my MA in Egyptian Archaeology at UCL in September 2014. I offer a range of tutoring sessions from primary age up to University dependent on subject. I am friendly, personable and hard working. I am a great motivator!

Teaching Experience:

I have worked at a school for over three years and during this time have covered classes a lot for teacher absence and PPA time. I have also been seen by an Ofsted inspector teaching a whole class maths session, despite not being a teacher, and was graded as outstanding and it was recommended I pursue my teaching. I plan on becoming a University lecturer, pursuing my PhD upon completion of my masters. I value education and academia and I feel this is a really important factor I enthusiastically pass on to my pupils. I have planned and led one to one interventions and group work and have always seen a vast improvement in attainment levels. Mostly, I am patient and understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

Hands on learning, a fun approach with all the necessary fine tuning and eye for detail that we need. While I am tutoring we are a team that can tackle problems together!

Personal Description:
My name is Barney, I'm 21 years old and an undergraduate history student at King's College London. I live a diverse lifestyle; despite the fact I am diligent and aim to excel in my studies, I also fulfill my time on the sports field, within the theater and in all aspects of life to the full. For example, I am the captain of the King's College London Rugby 1st XV, a position which necessitates not only ability but also a great deal of responsibility. Furthermore, in my 1st year at King's College London I played a lead role in the university production of 'Fame' the musical. Nonetheless, academia is of vital importance to me; I'm constantly striving to learn and I love being able to teach others what I have come across. Most importantly however, I'm an affable, caring and honest person. I know how to make people laugh and I value my people skills above all else. Whilst at school, I undertook an A.C.H.E. scheme (Advice, Care, Help, Empathy), which enabled me to act as a student councilor to anyone feeling upset, worried or just needing guidance.

Teaching Experience:

Within my role as Deputy Head Boy at my secondary school (Truro School, TR1 1TH), I was required not only to fulfill supervisory but also educational roles. This meant aiding the teachers, sometimes by assisting individuals who required extra help.

In the Spring of 2012 I spent two months working among orphanages in a deprived part of Buenos Aires known as the Hidden City, with a volunteer group named L.I.F.E - (Luchemos para una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza: We Strive for a Childhood with Happiness and Hope.) I was working with children between the ages of 5 and 12 more or less. Although they had very little educational background, it was our duty to impart what we could upon them; it required immense diligence and effort considering many of the children were unwilling to listen, let alone learn. However, this difficult but extremely rewarding opportunity provided me with teaching skills that cannot be underestimated. Namely, the ability to form a positive relationship with the child so as to ensure the best can be achieved.

Tutoring Approach:

As alluded to in the previous section, my approach to tutoring requires the formation of a positive relationship between tutor and tutored. I believe it is essential that there is rapport between both parties, in order to ensure that the tutored performs to their capability. As is nature, people are more willing to learn for those who they respect and like - precisely the opposite occurs if someone dreads tutoring. Educationally speaking, my approach is well structured, but varies greatly depending on the age. Regardless, it will always be in accordance with set examination boards and/or specific entrance exams. My exact approach is more easily demonstrated via e-mail once I know the specifics, and consequently can tailor accordingly.
