Tutoring Approach:

I am patient, friendly and easy to get on with. I have always tried to make my lessons interesting, relevant and inter-active. I tailor my teaching to the pupil and know that praise and encouragement are the keys to confidence and progress. A good sense of humour is vital,too.
I have helped to improve the grades of many pupils, some of whom have achieved the highest grade at GCSE, and have coached younger ones through entrance exams. One student, whom I tutored for three years, progressed from a poor level 4 in year 8 to GCSE grade B, the minimum requirement for A levels in many good schools, while others have achieved the A* grades required for their chosen paths.

I graduated from Oxford University in 2011 with a degree in Experimental Psychology, specialising in 'Educational Psychology'. Another gained almost an A* in her English GCSE after being tutored by me for just a month, a huge improvement from the C/D level she was at. I am currently tutoring students ranging from 11+ common entrance exams to A-level Mathematics and Psychology degree level. I have taken part in several mentor schemes where I supported students with their academic problems in Mathematics, Science and English.I have also hosted group tuition sessions, and regularly run study skills workshops in schools around London.

Studying 'Education and Psychology' as my specialist subject during my degree has meant that I have a range of techniques that I apply to my teaching - these are based on biological/neuroscience/psychological findings in an educational context.

Tutoring Approach:

I spend a lot of time planning for sessions so that my students get the very best out of each lesson. My approach is thus very organised, with small goals set per session, as well as a long term goal to work towards. I always ensure that my lessons are engaging, and work towards building a good relationship with my students, encouraging them to ask questions without any hesitation. I adapt my approach depending on my students' learning style as this is the key to successful teaching. Personal Description:
I am an undergraduate studying Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. I have recently completed my first year of study of a four-year course, gaining a distinction in the process. My academic results have been consistently excellent, providing me with a firm understanding of my chosen subjects.
I enjoy engaging people with new and potentially challenging ideas, encouraging them to progress academically. The exchange of ideas between tutor and tutee is something that I particularly enjoy and continue to focus on.

Teaching Experience:

My most notable tutoring experience was tutoring a young person, in Key Stage 3, in their studies for four to six hours a week for about two years. I was paid to tutor in all his subjects and my work mostly consisted of expanding on the syllabus, reviewing his homework and preparing him for tests. The tutee was not of English origin and a significant part of my work included improving his English. The pupil achieved top set for all his subjects as well as consistently high grades.
Secondly, I have gained tutoring experience overseeing a group of around twenty male pupils in Key Stage 2 and 3, providing constructive help with their homework and classwork. This was done for one hour per week for approximately six months as part of a Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. A key part of this experience was keeping the boys on task and focused.
Thirdly, I spent two years in the RAF Combined Cadet Force during sixth form where I rose to the rank of Sergeant. As a senior cadre, I was expected to do numerous presentations to the cadets informing them on the ethics, workings and history of the RAF as well as some of the principles of flight and navigation. This particularly provided me with great confidence to not only engage a variety of people but also communicated difficult and at times relatively dry subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is fundamentally based on incentive and reward. I believe a small bribe of chocolate biscuits, gold stars etc. can go a long way towards motivating the tutee. I also aim to provide inventive exercises for the pupil, for example, with my young male tutee an exercise in learning vocabulary would be turned into some sort of game, typically with a small competitive element added in.
Ultimately, I wish for the tutee to gain an interest in a particular field of study and by presenting topics in an interesting light I feel they are able to do so.

Personal Description:
Since graduating from Oxford University last year with a degree in Economics and Management, I have worked as a private tutor. The degree required a high level of maths. I took A-Levels in Maths, Economics, Geography and Critical Thinking, and received an A in all of these. I attended Kendrick Grammar School from the age of 11 to 18. This involved an entrance exam with both non-verbal and verbal reasoning papers. I have a good understanding of what is needed to achieve the top marks in maths and business related subjects as well as what is needed to be successful in entrance exams.

I have also just completed a post graduate degree in Global Development Challenges (University of Edinburgh, with distinction).

I have now been working as a tutor for three years and love my job. I enjoy building up a relationship with the families and students I work with and seeing a transformation in their confidence and their skills. Families I work with often joke that I have the patience of a saint!

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating, I have completed thousands of hours of tutoring in all my subjects. My students really enjoy my lessons and have been very successful. All of my 11+ students were successful this year, including Blue Coat, Kendrick, Reading Boys and The Abbey. All of my economics and maths students see a huge improvement, with the majority going on to achieve top grades (A/A*). My students often tell me that I have a way of explaining complicated things that 'just seems to make sense'.

I have spent 5 months homeschooling three children in the Bahamas and have worked with children of all ages in a wide range of roles. For 5 years I worked at my local dry ski slope as a ski instructor. This involved teaching anyone over the age of 4, and making lessons fun and relevant for them. I have learned to adapt my teaching style and to think of creative and innovative ways to teach new things. I also work with young people with special needs, which requires a great deal of patience and imagination. I am in the process of applying for various teaching courses.

I have also spent a great deal of time working with children with a variety of special needs including dyslexia and ADHD. I have had great success, particularly those with dyslexia. I aim to find imaginative and enjoyable ways to help the child and to build their self confidence in the subject.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and imaginative when it comes to teaching. I will keep finding different ways of explaining something until the person I am teaching really understands. I believe that students are much more likely to learn when they have a positive relationship with their teacher and when they are having fun.

I am nineteen years of age and am currently studying English Language and Literature at Oxford University. Alongside this, I enjoy a growing musical career as an operatic soprano, as well as undertaking freelance writing work. Now living between my home in Somerset and my college at Oxford, I enjoy sports such as horse riding, hill walking and kayaking, and love spending time with my four pre-teen nephews and nieces, of whom I have fond memories of helping learn to read.

Tutoring Approach:

Obviously each person learns differently, so I would always account for that and tutor in a way that works best for that particular person. Past papers are a great way to prepare for exams so I will always go through model exam questions.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe there are a number of key principles to tutoring.
1) RAPPORT - each tutee is different and it is important not to have a set formula when working with each student, or even for each class. In my opinion, there should be an emphasis on identifying the needs of the student and working towards these goals.
2) TARGETS - what are we working towards, how we can get there and isolating areas for improvement.
3) PRACTICE - regular testing, from past papers to 4) GENERAL EXAM TECHNIQUE.
