Personal Description:
APPOINTMENT SLOTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE (as of March 2015):
Friday 7pm onwards and holiday times.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Please be aware that I do charge for travelling over 30 miles (roundtrip: 15 miles each way):
30-40 mile roundtrip - £5
41-50 mile roundtrip - £10
51-60 mile roundtrip - £15
61-70 mile roundtrip - £20

Personal Description:
Of Jamaican and Bahamian origin, I am a very down to earth, practical person with very solid communication and interpersonal skills.

I am a punctual, responsible, dependable and honest tutor. I understand and am sensitive to the diversity of people.

Teaching Experience:

I have proven, academic and professional experience in Teacher Education (over 15 years) at primary and secondary level and both at mixed and same-sex schools.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is adapted to the requirements and the level of the tutee. I do not believe in a rigid approach (unless this is required), but aim to provide the best form of teaching that matches the tutee's preferred form of learning.

I am a very patient tutor, breaking down subjects to make topics accessible to every type and level of learner. . I utilise tried and tested techniques to encourage confidence and promote independent learning.

I have observed many different teaching styles to form a practical working knowledge of the best method to achieve optimum results from each student.

I promote a positive learning environment at all times to increase productivity and motivate students.

I will help develop study skills and habits when there isn't anyone else around to help students out. I will regularly evaluate students' progress in order to see where improvements can be made as well as regularly evaluate my teaching technique to make sure the student is receiving enough assistance.

Personal Description:
I am a super-tutor, with a 1st Class Masters from Cambridge University. I am excellent with children and love to help others learn.

I went straight from university into drama school, and now work as a tutor and a professional actress. I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have helped children get into some of the best schools in the country, as well as aiding older children in getting the A*s they want at GCSE and A-level.

Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

I have now been tutoring ages 7-18 for 4 years, and have had brilliant feedback from my various jobs:

1. Lucy is an excellent enthusiastic tutor who does a great job keeping my son interested and engaged. I would highly recommend her. - Father of Zain (age 8)

2. I would really like to thank you for being such a great tutor. We appreciate the effort you put into preparing for the sessions with Ella and we have every confidence in your dedication and abilities. - Father of Ella (age 16)

3. Julian scored 97% UMS marks in English Language, which is within 2.1% of all the boys taking English this year. For English Literature his UMS score was 97% again, which is within 4% of all the boys this year! This brilliant result, we think, is largely thanks to your help. - Mother of Julian (age 16)

4. Our son absolutely loved Lucy. She worked so hard with him in the lead-up to his exams, and I don`t know what we would have done without her! - Mother of Christopher (age 11)

Tutoring Approach:

I am a confidence-buildling tutor.

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.

Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

Personal Description:
I am 54 years old, I am married with four children. I have a degree ( Joint Honours, 2.1 in Agriculture with Agricultural Economics) and a Cert Ed. I am a member of the Institute for Learning. I have taught a wide range of subjects over 28 years and am able to coach you to success whether you are looking for science, geography, Excel spreadsheets, English as a Foreign Language or even French and German ( I worked in both countries when I was younger)

Teaching Experience:

I can help you prepare for exams in Geography, Biology, Ecology, French and German. I have taught English as a Foreign Language over many years. I can also help you with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, particularly for Business. I am a patient, enthusiastic and committed teacher with 28 years experience particularly with post 16 and adult education. I have taught agriculture and related topics over that time, and very much enjoyed diversifying my teaching portfolio as new courses arose at the college. I have taught a range of biology and geography related topics, including plant and soil science, crop science, crop production, livestock production, environmental issues, ecology, woodland management. In business I have helped many people develop diverse enterprises, preparing carefully costed cash flow projections. I very much enjoy seeing people develop confidence with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, which are an invaluable tool.

Tutoring Approach:

I am convinced that one-to-one tuition is by far the most efficient way in which a person can progress and gain confidence. Often someone can grasp a topic in 5 minutes of one-to-one that would have taken 2 hours to cover with a larger group. Once you are confident with a topic, we move on rapidly to the next one. A current A level tutee of mine told his father "I learnt more in that 2 hour session than I have all term at school" and his headteacher wrote to congratulate him on his improved grades. (The reason for this is not that his teacher is bad, far from it, but a tutor can give you personal one-to-one attention, concentrating on the bits you need) I always ensure that the learners are confident with each step before progressing further.

I am well organised, efficient and take a friendly approach to tutoring - as well as being hard-working and easy to get along with, I am reliable and prefer my lessons to be enjoyable as well as informative. My passion for cooking, combined with another passion of mine; travel, has enabled me to spend considerable time in numerous countries giving me first hand knowledge of different languages/cultures and business environments. So far I have been fortunate to visit New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, France, Spain, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, Sweden and I intend to visit many more.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous tutoring experience with both young people (under 18) and international students since 2011. I have been able to help my past two tutees from UKtutors to A's in Geography GCSE and A Level respectively.
I also completed a 4 week internship in a New Zealand grammar school in the summer of August/September 2012, allowing me to gain classroom experience as well as helping out more recently in a primary school in Finland, teaching English.

Meanwhile, I tutor/help out my younger brother who is 18 and studying for his A levels.

I also have my own 'proofreading' enterprise and I have helped foreign students with their conversational English skills since 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I take an informal approach but also ensure that sessions are structured well and tailored for each individual students' needs so every tutee is able to get the most from the session.

I am perfectly happy to re-arrange or cancel classes if necessary, I just ask to be notified at least 24 hours prior to the intended lesson.

Personal Description:
I am an English and Portuguese Teacher and Translator. I translate and interpret from English to Portuguese and vice versa. I teach Portuguese and English as a foreign language.

Are you considering learning Portuguese? Here are some reasons why Portuguese might be an excellent choice for you:

• Portuguese is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world with over 230 million speakers in four continents.

• The official language of eight countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tome and Príncipe, Madeira and the Azores.

• Widely spoken, though not official, in parts of India, Macau, Andorra, Luxemburg, Paraguay, South Africa, and Namibia.

• The working and/or official language in important international organizations such as the African Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, the European Union, and Mercosul, the Organization of American States, the Organization of Ibero-American States, and the Union of South American Nations.

• Brazil is a 21st-century economic and industrial powerhouse. It is the 5th largest economy in the world, recently overtaking the UK's economy.

• Numerous scientists consider Brazil to be the country with the most important biological diversity in the world.

• You want to learn Portuguese as it's your partner's native language and you want to improve communication between you.

• I teach European Portuguese (Portugal), Brazilian Portuguese (Brazil) and African Portuguese (Angola and Mozambique).

So what are you waiting for? Come learn Portuguese.

Are you considering learning English? Here are some reasons why English might be an excellent choice for you:

• English is the first language of approximately 375 million people, is the official language in 54 countries and is the third largest language by number of native speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

• When combining native and non-native speakers, it is the most commonly spoken language in the world.

• The importance of learning English cannot be overstated in an increasingly connected and globalized world.

• For the many people that come to the United Kingdom from non-English-speaking countries every year, learning to communicate in English is important to enter and ultimately succeed.

• Working knowledge of the English language can create many opportunities in international markets and regions.

So what are you waiting for? Come learn English with me.

ADVANTAGES OF LEARNING WITH ME

Teaching Experience:

I have over 12 years of experience as a teacher. From 2004 to 2006, I worked as a History, Portuguese, English and other subjects tutor to primary and secondary students. From 2006 to 2012, I worked as a tutor guiding students in preparation of essays and dissertations in many different fields. Since 2012 I work as a full time Portuguese and English teacher in UK. I have experience with one-to-one and group lessons; beginners, intermediate, advanced and proficiency levels, present tuition and online tuition via Skype; teaching children from the age of 2; preparation for GCSE and A-level exams (OCR board); general training and language training for business purposes.

I have a degree in History with a teaching certificate which included one internship at a secondary school as a teaching assistant. I have a CRB and a DBS check. I did a 3-month training course for teachers at SLAS (Society for Latin American Studies) in 2012. I am flexible about working hours and commuting to work.

Tutoring Approach:

• General training: I teach how to use Portuguese in everyday situations, like introducing yourself to someone; giving personal information; going to a restaurant; asking directions; making a reservation in a hotel; using public transport, etc.

• Business: My teaching method is based on a communicative approach, focusing on achieving fluency, improving reading and listening comprehension, and expanding vocabulary. I teach the use of Portuguese in a variety of business environments, based on key skills like presenting information, taking part in meetings and videoconferences, handling telephone calls, negotiating and writing concise business letters, e-mails or reports.

• E-learning: My e-learning method is specifically designed for adults who may have limited hours available, prefer the convenience of learning online and need to improve their Portuguese language skills quickly.

• GCSE and A-level exams: I coach the student using past papers, besides writing, reading and listening exercises.

• Children and Teenagers: My lessons for children and teenagers are varied and enjoyable, with music, culture, and multimedia features to make the learning process very enjoyable and practical.

Personal Description:
I am a recent graduate (2012) of the University of Bristol where I studied Biology and obtained a high 2.1. In addition to my degree, I have studied a wide range of subjects during my time in education, within the humanities and the sciences. The inspirational teaching that I have received is one the mains reasons for my achievement of high grades, as well as enthusiasm for my subjects. I believe I can share this enthusiasm and my knowledge and offer your child the help they require.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst at school I was part of a reading scheme where a group of 10 students visited a nearby primary school. We read to individuals on a 1 on 1 basis and helped them to develop their own reading skills. I have been recently accepted onto the TeachFirst scheme, a two-year teaching placement, which will commence in 2013. To gain the experience I will need for this and the present tutoring I am doing, I have spent a lot of time in my old secondary school shadowing teachers and siting in on classes. I have also been coaching hockey at my local club since I was 16, which has allowed me to develop my communication skills.

Tutoring Approach:

In my opinion, a great tutor is not only one that can engage and animate their pupils, but can also adapt their teaching style to meet the needs of the individual. I hope that not only will I give your child the support they require, but he/she will also enjoy the teaching process.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Yasmin and I have just graduated from a BSc Hons Biology degree at the University of Nottingham with a 2.1. I consider myself to be a friendly, patient and understanding person, who will rarely give up on a challenge.

Teaching Experience:

I have done peer to peer teaching in my Secondary school where I would help other students at lunchtime or after school.
I have gained further experience in the past 2 years, since joining other tutoring agencies, by teaching Maths, Biology and Geography A levels and GCSE's, to various students on all different levels.

Tutoring Approach:

Obviously each person learns differently, so I would always account for that and tutor in a way that works best for that particular person. Past papers are a great way to prepare for exams so I will always go through model exam questions.

Personal Description:
My name is Andrea, I'm Italian and I'm 30 years old. I have got a degree in Italian Language, Italian Literature and Modern Philology at Padua University with the maximum valuation, 110 cum laude.
Recently I got a certification which legally qualifies me to teach Italian language, abroad, to foreign students. It is named CEDILS, and I got it at Ca' Foscari University in Venice.
I have learnt to use new linguistic teaching methodology with a focus on the student and his cognitive process, to value the autonomy and independence during the learning and the aim to help student to understand how to learn. I have improved my competence in management and in building teaching unit structure and I have learnt a lot of new and encourage teaching techniques.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working in teaching sector during the last three years: I have worked in different schools of language, both as employee and as volunteer, and I have a good experience with face to face and small groups lessons. I have taught Italian language both to adult with an high level who wanted to improve their fluency and their linguistic skills, and to youth students for the first time in contact with the Italian language.
I love very much to teach and to work in relationship with students; I like to motivate them in the process of learning using the right methodology to stimulate each of them in their educational path.
- From January 2015, Italian teacher for English students, support of English students with conversation class and Italian grammar focus, London
- 2014, Italian teacher for Foreign students in 'Studio Inglese' School of Language, Padua (Italy)
- 2013, High School Teacher in 'F. Amaldi' Istitute, Italian Support teacher, Barcelona (Spain)

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching method is mainly based on a communicative approach which gives the student a central and active role. The study of italian language procees from the general to the particular learning of all the characteristics of the new Language. Communication moments are privileged, and I always plan my lessons for the different needs of my students. I select and develop the teaching materials which are presented and discussed together with the students in order to give them a real motivation into the learning process.

Hello, I am a final year student studying Wildlife Conservation student at the University of Kent. My background is in the earth and life sciences but more recently I have incorporated social sciences to a much larger extent.

Personal Description:
As a Geographer, my love of the subject has kept me in the classroom for a long time. I am a middle manager with experience of both the English and Scottish school systems. My interest and experience lies in the planning and organization of fieldwork, which has seen me leading groups to a wide variety of UK locations from London to Orkney and abroad to places as far flung as South Africa and the USA as well as regular trips to the continent.
Outwith work, I am a creative sort, making and selling cards, interior designing properties and enjoying visiting new places for inspiration. I offer a spare room to international staff and students so enjoy hosting and meeting new people.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently a Curriculum Team Leader - CTL of Geography. I am a qualified Geography teacher of nearly 17 years. I am a qualified Citizenship teacher and have also taught this for 15 years.
My experience is at all secondary levels with most experience at GCSE level. I currently teach Geography at all secondary levels and participate in termly Citizenship enhancement days for students.
I also have a great deal of experience in the teaching of Travel and Tourism which I taught for 10 years and History and RE which have been on and off my timetable over the years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning is satisfying in itself and this is something which many students have yet to discover. My aim in teaching is for my students to enjoy the process of learning, to learn to take control of their own education and to take pride in their learning and achievements.

In tutoring sessions, I follow a very structured approach:

- In our first session I take an overview of the aims and needs of my student and together we prepare a plan for our time together.
- In each of our lessons we cover a topic of work, discuss and try to solve any problems with work from the student's school/ college and agree on the next week's reading and topic. We also take five minutes to review our progress, referring to our initial plan, and discuss any changes that need to be made to the plan.

I am currently at 2:1 level at university and know about all the stress and anxiety that schooling can put on you. I am very outgoing and friendly, and believe my skillset would help out persons who just need that extra bit of help. I am doing biology at University, but undertook my A-Levels in History, Geography, and Biology, getting A*A and a B respectively. I hope that i can be of service and help you or your child to reach the level they can achieve!

Teaching Experience:

I have done causal tutoring in the past, for family friends and my younger brother. I believe that being a student myself has given me a good insight in what approach to take to tutoring, and that this approach can be more beneficial and cheaper than some professional tutoring agencies.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring to me is a special role you can play in someones education, giving them a non-formal setting to learn new ideas information, while outside the stress of exams and teachers. I believe learning should ALWAYS be fun and interactive, as well as informative, but a balance needs to be struck. I use computer resources as well as books to provide an all round learning experience.

Personal Description:
Having graduated less than 6 months ago, I was a student and school pupil very recently too, meaning I can offer a different perspective and approach to most teachers and textbooks.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring since my final year of school and always with good results. Most importantly, I have always managed to build good relationships with my students and establish the relaxed and informal atmosphere so important for productive learning.

Tutoring Approach:

Everyone learns differently and I will find the best way for you, focusing on understanding rather than rote learning. This is much easier and more effective in a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere, something I try to establish in every session: learning doesn't have to be a chore!
