My name is Annika and I am a student at the University of Surrey. I study Business Management and German BSc and have received the highest grade in all of my modules. I play football in the university team and have years of experience as a football referee. I am fluent in 5 languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish, as well as learning a 6th one: Russian. I am Swedish but I have lived in many countries (Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, UK) throughout my life and gained insight to various cultures. I have 10 step siblings, ranging from 34 to 5 years old, and therefore am very comfortable in dealing with both young children, teenagers and adults. I also love music and play saxophone, piano and drums.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English to a French student in Spain for the past two years and been very pleased by his progress. I have been a football coach for 11 year old girls where I taught them various techniques and showed leadership.

I have 14 years experience of teaching MFL at high school level and also to adults.
I teach Spanish, Portuguese, French and Latin. I taught at the University of California Santa Barbara as a Lecturer before I moved to UK, where my husband is from. I also worked for the Extremadura Government in Spain as a teacher and as a translator. I am now teaching in London, Spanish, French and Portuguese syllabuses and I have been involved in intensive exam preparation for students of GCSE and A levels. I also revise plans and advise PGCE students in Spanish and Portuguese.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to think of myself as a highly motivated and dedicated teacher of MFL that fosters high student self-expectation. This can be done by building commitment to quality education and developing strong bonds with students, parents and Faculty. For example, I believe in employing a variety of classroom techniques to raise achievement: I have recently developed a bank of resources for Spanish and French teaching to accommodate different learning styles. Aside from good teaching, assessing students' progress is important. For example target setting and monitoring is an important method in ensuring that students reach their potential. Finally, create motivating learning environments that capture the imagination of the students, using for example students performance charts with points to show each student's progress in each field and this can be used to monitor a student's acquisition of the target language.

Nick is an Oxford English graduate who has worked as a strategy consultant and set up various businesses as an entrepreneur, including raising $5m in funding as Development Director for a military website in San Francisco, developing a 1m property portfolio in Notting Hill and the Alps and providing financial backing for the first two albums by a singer-songwriter from Brisbane, who has now won record deals with Sony and EMI and released a number one single in Greece. In his spare time, he loves playing golf, skiing and dancing:
- He helped win the southern and national team ballroom dancing championships for Oxford University and won a Half Blue for being on the winning team in the Varsity match.
- He spent four ski seasons in Mribel and Val d'Isre and lived in Lyon, where he learned to speak French fluently with the aid of a French girlfriend.
- He also spent 18 months in Brisbane, where he became a scratch golfer, and now coaches privately and at City Golf in London.

Teaching Experience:

He has had over a hundred clients aged between six and 46 whom he teaches English, French, Maths, essay-writing and information technology. He also coaches various sports to friends and colleagues in his spare time, including golf, sailing, ballroom and Latin dancing.

On a more personnal level, I am interested in art in general: I especially love Literature and cinema and I am a fanatic of musical theatre, even though I cannot sing a note!

Teaching Experience:

I was a tutor in my hometown of Lyon (France) last school year and I taught a wide range of subjects such as French, English, History or Maths to students aged 11 to 15.

Tutoring Approach:

My previous experience of private tutoring made me develop my pedagogical skills, which I had never really had to use before. As I was new to tutoring I was a bit anxious at first but it turned out easier than I expected and my students didn't seem traumatized by me either. I am friendly but focused on work and methodology.

Since this is private tuition, I always try my best to adapt to my pupil's needs and personnality in order to offer him or her the best possible service. I constantly make the effort to acknowledge the fact that what seems obvious to me is not necesarily so for others and I always encourage my students to ask questions whenever they don't understand something. I'd rather explain one point several times than leaving it uncleared. As often as I can, I also tell students not to fear to make mistakes since it part of the learning process, and what makes teachers useful. In addition to academic knowledge as such, helping students to grow self confident in the subject(s) I teach is one of my priorities.

Besides, I pay much attention to communication with parents, since it seems important to me to hear what they have to say about their child and exactly what they expect form me.

I am French but have lived in Britain for years (both my children, who are in their 20's, were born here). I have also lived and worked in Spain and am fluent in the language. I then taught adults in a language school (Inlingua) in Germany, Italy and London. I came back to this country and got a job in a private school where I was the teacher in charge of Spanish. After working in this school for 21 years, I have just retired but miss the excitement of teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught languages all my life, first in a Welsh comprehensive school (for 8 years), then abroad. In Spain, I taught French and English in a primary school and I then taught adults French, Spanish and English as a foreign language for Inlingua. When I returned to Britain, I taught French and Spanish to GCSE and A level in a private school. I have just retired after 21 years there and I now help a private Open University student. I enjoy teaching and would like to do more tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

As I have a wide experience of teaching languages, I am able to use different kinds of approach to language learning and can apply the best suited one for each student. I have lived in London for the past 10 years. I previously lived and studied in Milan, Italy where I obtained my university degree. For a short while I also lived in Lausanne, Switzerland, where I did some of my studies. I have tutored students in both Milan and London, face-to-face as well as online, and have helped them improve in the subject matters they struggled with.
I get on well with people of all ages and backgrounds. I take the time to find the right studying approach that works for each tutee to ensure they pick up the material as effectively as possible. My goal in tutoring is to help tutees understand and learn the material in the easiest way so they can improve their knowledge without feeling it as a burden.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously taught English as a foreign language, Italian and French to children aged 9-13, teenagers and adults. My tutees markedly improve their knowledge and manage to fill the gaps and prepare for exams or achieve the desired grade. In my experience it takes tutees 1-2 months to notice a difference and 3-6 months to feel more confident with the language, though of course this depends on commitment levels and the difficulty experienced by the person.

Tutoring Approach:

The most important thing for me is to find out where specifically the tutee has difficulties or gaps with the subject. I also take into consideration how a student normally studies to work out what approach works best for them.
I am a strong believer in using a calm approach in tutoring as it is most effective to help set in the knowledge and achieve best results.

I am an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with a real passion for languages. This has led me to travel widely within Europe and amass a great deal of experience of other cultures. That and my belief in 'having a go' at communicating has led me to learn the basics of quite a few languages and given me plenty of material for (short) 'instructional anecdotes', based on various scrapes and international misunderstandings! Languages should be fun and we should never be afraid to try them out! My other passion is music - a truly international language - and I enjoy my weekly instrumental lessons and playing with my local (amateur) orchestra.

Teaching Experience:

I hold degree level qualifications in English, French, Spanish and German and have over 30 years' experience of teaching languages, in both private and state schools and Sixth Form and Further Education colleges, where I have prepared students for a range of examinations and other qualifications. I have particular expertise in helping students bridge the gap between GCSE and AS level - and I love grammar! I have also worked as a private tutor and as a provider of courses and interpreting services for local businesses. My students have ranged in age from 8 to 80-plus. I teach Spanish and French to A level and can also offer German and Italian to intermediate level and basic introductory courses in Russian and Latin. I also offer conversational English for speakers of other languages.

Tutoring Approach:

Lessons can be in my home or at a venue of your choice, within a 5-mile radius. I can travel further afield, but would need reasonable time and travel expenses. I can offer day-time or evening lessons, any day of the week. My hourly rate is 25, though I also offer lessons of 30 or 50 minutes (pro rata). The same rate applies irrespective of the group size. Tutoring can be 1-to-1, small-group or, if you can provide a suitable venue, in a group of up to 15. Personal Description:
I grew up in south-west London, in Twickenham, before attending Tiffin School (Kingston-Upon-Thames) and Cambridge University, where I was awarded my BA (Hons) degree in History of Art. I have always engaged with extracurricular activities with enthusiasm, something which my educational institutions have given me ample opportunity to do.

My main passion has been acting. It has provided many opportunities to meet and get to know a huge range of different people, all in a challenging, intense environment. Fundamentally, it is the opportunity to engage with the perspective of another person and to attempt to embody this in actions and speech. It requires a performer to listen to and work with others on stage, and to work within a flexible, productive relationship - this is essential for any student-teacher relationship, as a dialogue begins to emerge.

My other interests have similarly complemented my academic pursuits: I have played rugby union for 14 years, up to and including university level, and used to play the french horn in the school orchestra. Both activities gave me an opportunity to voice my individual contribution to the group whilst working within a team, invaluable experience for academic discussion as well as confidence in many other areas of life. They offer different approaches to problem solving and develop some of the broader skills essential for academic success, such as self-expression, articulation, flexibility and confidence.

Teaching Experience:

My experience includes working with primary school students (age 4-6), through a voluntary program at secondary school. This involved helping children to learn to read. The weekly session required empathy and flexibility on my part, demanding an understanding that each child`s ability was completely unique, and that my approach needed to be modified to fit each person. In particular, I had to cultivate patience and a desire to listen and to understand everything the child was saying.

Whilst at university I also participated in a student run mentoring scheme, which gave unprivileged children the opportunity to understand life and work at Cambridge. It was a fascinating opportunity to understand some of the social and personal blocks to academic confidence, as well as offering ways in which these problems might be developed and overcome. Most importantly, it was a joyful experience to be able to help a younger person, and to understand that they were a unique person with their own approach to problems and solutions. By listening to him, I gradually learnt the ways in which they best communicated and how I could use those situations to our advantage as a student-teacher pair.

More recently, I have participated in a student-run university theatre tour which also comprised educational workshops. These workshops were a much bigger part of the tour than we had originally thought, and proved to be challenging at times. This was partly from the language barrier (many classes spoke little to no English, and were often too embarrassed to speak at all), but also from the unpredictable nature of the students. We had to work on our feet, employing what resources we had in a way which was meaningful, cumulative and ultimately led to an end. Our exercises required an overall structure and an ultimate purpose, but we also wanted to adjust this according to their reactions. Though I initially found this challenging, towards the end of the tour I could take charge of workshops and lead them with ease.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching and intellectual discussion have always been an important part of my family life, and it is an activity which I enjoy on a personal as well as professional level. My time at university has developed my ability to think in this way, as well as providing an environment in which I was surrounded by these kinds of discussion, with both professors and students. The emphasis on close-contact supervision periods at Cambridge taught me the importance of helping each student understand their individual form of expression.

I would avoid didactic repetition and seek to challenge the student and invite them to contribute. As well as work done outside the tutoring time period, I would encourage tasks such as presentations and prepared discussions as much as possible. I believe this work lays an essential base for passionate intellectual discussion, and it is something which certainly helped me in my university interview.

Coupled with this development of interest in particular subject areas, I would try to help the student's method of arguing and offer sustained, constructive advice on how that might be more effective. A university candidate is only as successful as their ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, something which may require exercises as different as confidence building or syntax and grammar. But as well as this self-belief and self expression, the student would need to acknowledge that academic (and educational) progress can be achieved by listening to others and attempting to understand their point of view. This dialogic aspect is essential to my tutoring approach.

Teaching Experience:

My special interest in language and teaching led me to work as a tutor for 5 years, concentrating in subjects such as : ancient Greek, Latin, English as a foreign language, essay writing and thought development, French, reading and writing for primary school ages.

Tutoring Approach:

The principle that governs my teaching approach is that the student needs to perceive language as a whole, with regards to historical and linguistic relations. I think that is very important for the student to go through the process of learning by making conceptual connections between the subjects so as to construct a strong background on which they can base a solid and deep understanding of the subject matter. Regarding for example ancient Greek-Latin-new Greek, when it comes to learning, the fact that these languages are closely related to the point where we can say that the later are "daughter" languages of the former, cannot be ignored. So within the learning process the student in my guidance is required to investigate and absorb from the closely related languages the learning tools and techniques that fascilitate the understanding of the main subject. This is the approach I have towards learning interlingually, and can be applied within language all language pairs in my knowledge such as ancient Greek-Latin, Latin-French, Latin-new Greek.
Regarding my pedagogic methods of teaching, I give students the space they need to contemplate and extract information from the data I supply them with in order to favorise critical thinking, decision making and learning through mistakes. I try to give them stimuli to provoke their thinking and broaden their learning horizons.
