Personal Description:
I'm a 42-year old graduate of the excellent University of Sussex languages course with a First Class Honours degree in French and Russian. I lived for four years in Paris where I mastered the language and the accent!

As well as language studies, my course encompassed literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries and history, society and politics since the French Revolution - subjects I am therefore qualified to talk about with some authority.

I like to stay abreast of French culture and society and am catching up with some novels I didn't get to read at university (most recently Georges Perec's wonderful <i>La Vie, mode d'emploi</i>)

Teaching Experience:

I have now been privately tutoring students at all levels for 6 years covering most UK exam boards at GCSE KS3 and KS4, AS and A2-level, and I have also helped prepare older students for the DELF.

Recent successes include steering a young lady through her DELF B1 exam with a 92.5% mark and an 11-year old girl passing her selective school entrance exam.

Here are some comments from a couple of clients - originals available on request.

<i>"Thank you so much for all your patient hard work - you taught her exactly the right stuff and there is no way she could have done it without you! I really didn't think it was possible to teach the whole year 7 curriculum in a week but somehow you managed it.

"Tiffin Girls is one of the top state schools in the country and rather competitive. Chatting to the other parents outside the exam, most of the competitors went to good independents or had been tutored over a long period of time. <b>You really knew not only what to teach but how to teach it, which shows you have exceptional skills.</b>"</i> - Anoushka (pupil's mother)

<i>"Just thought I should let you know I got an A! Thanks for all your help"</i> - Helena (A-level student)

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above their 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.

Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.

Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.

For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

Note that hourly rates are based on the student travelling to my home. If you require tutoring at your own home or office, there is an extra charge per lesson, dependent on distance travelled. Please contact me for more details!

Personal Description:
I'm a recent University of Glasgow Biochemistry and MSc International Project Management graduate. I'm a French national and have been living in the UK for 14 years. I'm a lovely person, very dynamic and love the one to one of tutoring. It makes me really happy to help someone achieve something they have worked so hard for.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately now for 7 years and have seen my students come to grow in confidence, in understanding and in knowledge of their chosen topics. I saw a girl who I tutored for 7 months go from getting an 'Unclassified grade' in her Biology AS Level to a B in her A2. I have never seen a student of mine's grades stay the same post-tutoring and I am very proud of that.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning.

Very often, many people's only previous experience of learning a language has been at school, where a great deal of emphasis was placed on reading and writing a language with the purpose of passing an examination. However, teaching approaches to modern language training have changed enormously in recent years, and as a result, learning a language is now a lot more fun and a far more rewarding experience!
Languages are now widely taught using a method known as the Communicative Approach or Direct Method, whereby the teacher conducts the session almost entirely in the target language regardless of the student's level. While it may take getting used to initially, the method has proven to be highly effective and is adopted by language training organisations around the world.

TESTIMONIALS

"Over the past 3 years, I`ve had Italian lessons with a number of Italian teachers. Craig has by far been the most effective. He was quickly able to identify specific approaches to learning that would work for me and most importantly, keep me enthused! I am impressed by his preparation he doesn`t just bring the same text book to each lesson and set gap-filling exercises like previous teachers I`ve had - each lesson is carefully tailored to the subject in a way that makes the lesson interactive and memorable. Although I may know what the agenda for the lesson is, how he chooses to run the lesson is always a surprise. One subject leads on to the next as I progress but within each new topic, he skilfully and patiently recaps over previous topics to make sure I don`t forget what we`ve already touched on, which I really appreciate. Homework is set each week and because he makes it interesting, I look forward to the challenge of completing it. My ability to discuss, negotiate, tell stories fluently in Italian has really come on since working with Craig and my grasp of Italian grammar continues to improve thanks to his clear and concise explanations." Su, Walderslade

"Craig has been teaching me Spanish for nearly a year. One-on-one home tutoring enables me to fit lessons around my busy work and family life.
As a mature student I really appreciate Craig`s structured approach to language teaching tailored to my own specific learning pace" Neil, Lordswood

"I have been furthering my French with Craig for some time. He is very encouraging and likes to push you out of your comfort zone at times - which is a good thing as it gives confidence. Craig always makes learning fun and we can be discussing anything from the state of the country to man-eating spiders! He uses a variety of media and tailors lessons to your own requirements/needs or if there is something in particular you have a problem with he finds a way to explain it clearly." - Sharon, Chatham

"Craig is very professional, patient and understanding, I am an absolute beginner in French and after a couple of weeks of tutoring by Craig, I feel confident enough to ask in French some basic questions. Very big plus for me" Jacqueline, Walderslade

"Craig is friendly , helpful and moves you along at your pace" Martin & Lynda, Hempstead

Teaching Experience:

Experience teaching all ages, both in a school environment and one-to-one private tuition and with years of tutoring experience.

We can cater for beginner level right through to experienced speakers who want to brush up on their skills.

Tutoring Approach:

We teach using a variety of materials depending on level, such as class and activity books, grammar and vocabulary books, videos, Internet and printed exercises.
We do our best to tailor lessons to our student's needs. Most of our students are learning a language for a specific reason, such as for holidays or for exams. We design our lessons according to the reason and aim for learning.
We are happy to receive feedback from our students after each lesson and take into account any ideas for following lessons.

Personal Description:
I'm a 29 french man. I have been living in the UK for over 2 years now. Before, I lived in Paris for 5 years and
in different cities all over France. I was born and grew up in France. I studied in French universities
and I'm a passionate of French language and culture. I'm pedagogic, patient and enjoy sharing my
knowledge. My different experiences (professional and personal) have given me a lot of ideas to
create and develop lessons adapted to different learners, levels and in a friendly environment.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching French to primary school children after school when I was a student. I was a
Police officer in Paris and my timetable was really variable so I was able to teach French during my
free time. Within the Police Institution, I was a tutor for a police school for 4 years and I taught
French criminal law for policeman. On my free time I taught French to English adults (beginners and
advanced levels) for 4 years in Paris. I supported different people and always adapted the tuition to
the learner.
I have been teaching French to all levels in the UK from beginning to business level for 2 years now.
Apart from this, I am also a table tennis coach and taught table tennis to young children
and adult for several years and a football coach.

Tutoring Approach:

I used to divide lessons into two parts :
- First part : pronunciation, communication skills, French grammar
- Second part : discussion about cultural course about France and the French society or based on articles, world's event…. The student can use his knowledge in an unformal situation.

This is of course a basis and I can manage lessons according to student's needs and expectations. Lessons can be organized in different way.

Personal Description:
Having always been passionate about languages, I have studied them keenly and learned how to break them down and make them accessible to anyone. I am also fascinated by art and history and therefore aim to incorporate notions of foreign culture in language teaching. At the same time, I am a trained actress, and am happy to tutor drama students or people preparing for drama school.

Teaching Experience:

I left uuniversity in 2011 and have been working as a private tutor ever since. I teach both casual learners and students, particularly GCSE and A-level French and German. I also teach English as a second language and drama/acting.

Tutoring Approach:

Although I learned all my foreign languages through a rigorous method very much based on writing and grammar, I am happy to adapt my method to the student's needs. Personally, I believe that conversation is the key to becoming fluent in a language, but at the same time I could never bear to neglect the importance of writing and reading comprehension.

Personal Description:
My Name is Billy and i am currently studying for a BA in Politics and East European Studies at University College London. I am fresh out of school and still have all the vital knowledge and exam technique that is still relevent to todays GCSE and A-levels. I am friendly and willing to work with all abilities, i am very much looking forward to helping others maximize their potential and improving their final grade. I gained 6 A stars and 6 A grades at GCSE, while gaining 2 A and 2 B grades at A level.

Teaching Experience:

I have so far helped family and friends, to a great deal of success. Before this summers exams, i helped a friend turn around his predicted D in economics to a very high B (78%). I was active in my school, tutoring struggling GCSE french and maths students who were at a loss or alienated from teachers. Often, getting help from someone who has recently gone through the same exam is the most valuable tool to any student. I found older students to be far more useful than teachers, older student experience is what i aim to provide.

Tutoring Approach:

With public exams, its not what you know but how you know it. I will aim to provide hands on exam technique with the use of real past questions and examples, starting from the basic right through to the most difficult and nuanced problems. In this way i aim to add one grade higher grade at the very least to a tutees prediction.

A final year MEng Automotive Engineering student at the University of Bath. Friendly and relaxed, looking forward to helping others learn and achieve their goals!

Teaching Experience:

I have no teaching experience yet but have three younger siblings and so have been called upon to help with informal tutoring in the past.

Tutoring Approach:

I will start by asking the student (or parents) to identify the areas in which help is required to make sure your requirements and my abilities match. I will then help the student to complete exercises by his or herself and be available if conceptual help is required. Personal Description:
Hi!

I am a PhD student living in London, but based at the University of Warwick. I was lucky enough to be awarded a prestigious Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarship for my thesis. I graduated from the University of Warwick with that year`s highest First Class degree in French and Italian Studies (2012). I recently received a Distinction in my Master`s degree in French Studies (2013). I hope to go on to lecture full-time.

In my spare time I act and direct theatre.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently on my University`s training programme in order to teach undergraduate classes next academic year, both grammar and literature. I will be leading undergraduate seminars this academic year.

In 2011 I spent 2 months teaching English to Italian children aged 7-13 in Italy. The same year I spent 5 months teaching English to French university students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very friendly and outgoing, and endeavour to be laid back whilst taking my work very seriously and encouraging students to work hard and learn to the best of their ability.

Classes will be well-structured, with clearly defined goals and learning outcomes, both long- and short-term. Exercises will be provided to help with grammar, translation and essay-writing skills. With regards to literature, students will be encouraged to think independently and encouraged to debate and disagree with my views. However, structure, writing style, grammar and content will be consistently challenged.

Hi! I am a french-canadian just moving in UK to get an overseas work experience and improve my english skills at the same time. I recently graduated with a Master's Degree in History and Medieval Studies. Except history and old things, I like to travel, to hike and read. Personal Description:
Since graduating from Oxford University with a French degree five years ago, I have enjoyed tutoring people of all ages, both in the UK and in Germany. I am bilingual English/German and spent the last two years living in Berlin. I am extremely creative, which manifests itself in my involvement in music, theatre, and art, but also greatly informs the way I teach.
I always look forward to meeting new students and welcome any enquiries you may have.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching French, German and English since 2009, tutoring students from year 7 to A level to adult learners. In 2012 I worked as a Learning Support Assistant to a child in reception. The focus was on literacy, numeracy, and social skills. In 2007-08, during the third year of my degree, I worked as an English teaching assistant in two secondary schools in France. Finally, since 2012 I have been involved in running singing workshops for adults and teaching drama games to children. I have recently started running a weekly choir.

Tutoring Approach:

I care about fostering a joy for learning in all of my pupils. I tailor my teaching materials to each student. Every person responds to different stimuli and it is necessary to understand this to provide the best learning environment for each individual. I derive real enjoyment from finding creative ways to help students get past any difficulties they might have in their subject. Whilst I have a very patient and kind demeanour, which is something that comes across in my teaching, I also have high standards and believe in encouraging a sense of self belief in my students.
