| Personal Description: I am a Canadian and British citizen and have been living in the UK for 2.5 years. I graduated Secondary School in Ottawa, Canada with my Bilingual Certificate after participating in the French Immersion program, studying French for 12 years. After Secondary School, I took a GAP year and spent 6 months volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala, where I built upon my previous 3 years of study in Spanish. I completed my undergraduate degree and hold a 1:1 from the University of Western Ontario, where I studied political science, international development and Spanish. During university, I participated in an exchange program and studied for my third year in Ecuador, South America where I immersed myself in the culture, perfecting my Spanish language skills. I recently completed my Masters Degree in Public Policy in Latin America at the University of Oxford where I also worked on translation. |
Teaching Experience: I have three and a half years experience tutoring / teaching French in Canada and the UK. For one year, I tutored French at the primary level to two students in Canada. As well, I have three months experience as a teacher's aid, where I volunteered to assist a core French teacher, helping in various classes, ages ranging between 8 and 14. In both Guatemala and Ecuador, I tutored students in English teaching them the basic grammatical structure of the language as well as verb conjugation and vocabulary. I believe my experience working with Spanish speaking students helped me develop the skills necessary to structure lessons not only in English, but in Spanish as well. I used these skills when I tutored spanish at the GCSE level in Liverpool last year, particularly for exam preparation, as well in Oxford this year. I also have experience in translation after spending 3 weeks as the translator for a student trip to Honduras organized by my undergraduate university. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a structured approach to tutoring. I believe strongly in the student understanding the grammatical structure of the language first. Therefore, I usually begin with a review to better understand what level the student is at. I initially focus on sentence structure, outlining each component and its use. I then proceed to verb groupings and conjugation, beginning with the present tense and progressing to the past, imperfect, and future when the student is ready. I allot a theme to each lesson so that the lesson itself is structured around one idea. For example a lesson may focus on sports, food, family, or holidays. This way all the verbs and vocabulary learned revolve around a theme and makes the lesson more fun and interesting. I also assign interactive activities to ensure the student's oral skills are strengthened. Activities differ depending on the age and level of the student; however, examples include writing stories, songs, rhymes, a make-believe trip to the store or supermarket, as well as reading novels or short passages. Throughout, I try and ensure the student is speaking as much as possible as oral exams tend to be the area of most concern for past students. |

| Personal Description: I am a recent Cambridge graduate - I studied Land Economy (an interesting mix of economics, law, geography and finance). I am now moving to London and would like to offer my tutoring services to the world. Or at least to West London. |
Teaching Experience: I started young, helping other primary school students with exam preparation. I turned my efforts to more lucrative ends in secondary school where among other enterprises I sold revision notes to fellow students. An example: we were unfortunate in our GCSE history teaching where we were subjected to 5 teachers over 5 terms. Students insisted I was responsible for their eventual success in the exams, whether they used my compact revision guides, or attended the workshops in which we utilised dramatisations, poetry and song among other methods to drill home the facts. My favourite success story is very close to home, as I helped my younger sister with her Maths. From always being in the lower sets at school, and frankly hating the subject, I found ways to explain concepts to her that teachers at school hadn't had time to convey, resulting in her eventually achieving an A at GCSE (rather frustratingly only 1 mark off an A*). I was also the first port of call when it came to advice on personal statements for university applications. I continue to be called upon for advice on job applications (even those completely unrelated to my subject - such as my friend's successful application to do a PhD at Cancer Research UK). So university application advice is another speciality of mine. I can give particular insight into Oxbridge applications, without the extortionate fees most companies boast... |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very flexible approach when it comes to teaching - it really depends on the student at hand. There are numerous ways to explain concepts in Maths, Chemistry and Physics, it is simply a matter of finding the one which clicks. Having helped a great variety of students through their GCSE's and A levels I know that different people's minds work in different ways, and sometimes there simply isn't enough time in a busy classroom to make sure everyone understands everything. I know I can find the explanations that teachers may have missed. I have always done extremely well in exams, which I put down to having a decent grasp of the fundamentals, combined with good exam technique. I can help teach students the tricks to getting maximum marks in exams, whilst of course making sure they also understand the subject at hand so are comfortable with it. When it comes to French practice is everything - I have been tutored in French in the past, so know plenty of useful tricks - my particular favourite teaching method is to hold a French tea party (where not a single word of English may be spoken) - the added inducement of pain au chocolats works wonders. |

| Personal Description: I am French but have been living in the UK for 18 years! I am a teacher and a mother of 3. I am reliable, patient and above all persistant. I love a challenge and will not give up until I've found a way to get through to a student making him/her realise that, yes, French can be a challenge (sometimes...) but the rewards are great and very worthwile! Learning a language need not be boring and it's a life long skill that will have implications in your professional, personal and social life. |
Teaching Experience: I am an experienced qualified teacher and also a native speaker. I have been teaching years 7 to 13 in a secondary school for 9 years and previously taught in a bilingual nursery school. I have extensive knowledge of exam practise and techniques in all 4 skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) both at GCSE and A levels. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very patient and understanding of the challenges of learning a foreign language as I've been there myself. I am passionate about French and have loads of resources to make learning fun, interactive and to help the learning "stick"! I try to use real French material (from magazines, video clips etc) when relevant. I will tailor the sessions to suits each student particular needs and consolidate/develop grammar and vocabulary in speaking, writing, listening and reading. |

| Personal Description: I have a long experience giving private lessons. The main subjects I have taught in the past are Spanish, French (both my native languages) and philosophy (having recently graduated from a second MA in Paris with honors). Although I am not a native English speaker, I have recently taken the IELTS exam, and almost achieved a perfect score (8.5). |
Teaching Experience: I have prepared many people for important French examinations (such as the acceptance to Sciences-Po) with a fair amount of success. I have also had many foreign students from the Sorbonne who wanted to improve their academic results. Although I have usually given lessons to adults and university students, I have a fair amount of experience with high school pupils. |
Tutoring Approach: I have worked many times as a translator, which, I think, has always given my lessons a different approach to teaching a foreign language. I tend to work extensively on literary texts with my students, always giving priority to their personal preferences. |

| Personal Description: Graduated with a Master's degree in Engineering from top-rated French specialist school, Ecole des Mines. I offer Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry tuition to A-Level standard as well French. Experienced in teaching both in a group and on an individual basis, I offer interactive and intensive lessons that are designed around the student's particular needs. I have a valid CRB disclosure. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently tutoring various students in science on an individual basis. I worked part time for international language school 'Global LT' as a French tutor. I taught both business and conversational French. I also worked as a part time mathematics tutor for remedial class agency 'Completude'. I experienced teaching in a group and on an individual basis. While I was studying I was also member of the 'E=(CM)^2' project which had to develop scientific interest in primary school pupils, particularly in the field of electricity. |
Tutoring Approach: My idea about teaching revolves around understanding coming from within the student, and not from their teacher. I believe that the effectiveness of my teaching is dependent on what I elicit from my student by asking questions. Their understanding must be based on what they already know. I also believe that any lesson must be rigid but redesigned and reinvented depending on the person who is being taught. |

| Personal Description: I'm a french national, fluent in English, capable of teaching French as a foreign language at any level. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a student at the University of Glasgow, studying veterinary medicine. Throughout the course of my life i was moved from one country to the next due to my parents job, in doing this I learned many languages and learned a lot about different kinds of people and different teaching techniques as every school had its own methods of teaching. |
Teaching Experience: While I was living in Tokyo, Japan, I got into teaching English to Japanese kids as part of an after school activity for pocket money. I became very interested in teaching as I watched their progression through the different levels in the program. After working with these kids, I began helping out in maths and sciences tutoring for younger kids that were struggling with their courses. |
Tutoring Approach: I myself occasionally struggled to get to grips with a few of the topics included in the international baccalaureate degree. I found that the best option was for me to go back to the basics and re-structure my knowledge on the topic thus finding where my learning problem was and defeating it. Then, in order to apply my knowledge to test questions I continued to go over past papers and to write exams questions out. In teaching, I found that the same techniques are useful and valuable to students. |
