| Personal Description: I am a native French speaker and have been studying in an English speaking school to prepare my A-levels. I have an undergraduate degree in history and history of art from the Sorbonne in Paris, an MA in film studies and communication from the University of London (Queen Mary Univeristy) and a postgraduate diploma in magazine journalism from City University. I have been a working journalist for the past six years. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a mentor for younger journalists on diverse projects including a summer programme for the National Youth Theatre and ongoing training and mentoring of graduate trainees for the past two years. I have been a French and history private tutor with my students successfully passing their respective exams. I have volunteered in a local primary school to help children develop their literacy and confidence when reading. I am also tutoring adults on religious subjects on a weekly basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a friendly and sociable person with whom students feel quickly at ease. I like to start by an informal assessment of the student's needs, preconceptions, strengths and weaknesses. I think it's good to challenge students to exploit their abilities to the fullest without putting undue pressure on them. I thoroughly prepare for each tuition and try my best to show students their progress and improvement. I think it's essential to encourage and motivate people to help them achieve their potential. |

| Personal Description: I am currently in the second year of my doctorate in Film and Telvision at Glasgow University. Although my key interest is Film and Television, I am also well-versed in Philosophy, being able to teach both continental and analytic traditions owing to my previous study to honours level in the subject. I have an enthusiastic work ethic and many non-academic interests including running, cinema-going and reading. I also have a strong passion for music production. I'm a relaxed and confident tutor who is able to teach many levels of competence. |
Teaching Experience: I have experienced tutoring level 2 undergraduates in my Department, as well as having spoken at conferences and symposia. The University's Disability Support scheme has also provided me with an excellent opportunity to teach students on a one to one basis and to rise to the challenge of teaching students in difficult circumstances or with special needs. |
Tutoring Approach: I don't think a singular approach works as each student has his own individual needs, however I do feel in general that detailed reading, analysis and critical thinking should be the basis for nearly all successful sessions. My approach is both personal and professional tailored to the needs of each student but always keeping sight of the goal at hand. |

| Personal Description: I am a confident writer with journalistic, theatre and publishing experience. I have a Class I BA(Hons) English Language & Literature with an MA in Writing for Performance & Publication. I have worked with companies as diverse as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Theatre in the Mill, Freedom Studios, BBC, Endemol, Lion TV, Dog Horn Publishing, Pink Paper, Leeds Guide and Bent. My first novel, Troglodyte Rose, is a finalist in the 2010 Lambda Literary Awards in New York and I previously won the Spectrum Fantastic Arts Silver Editorial Award in 2008. |
Teaching Experience: I am experienced in one-to-one tuition and mentoring, and have run programmes of workshops and educational events for the past two years in a formal setting and the past eight years in an informal setting. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to set out our initial goals up front, so that both the tutee and I have a plan to work from. This enables us to better evaluate the direction the tutoring is going and see specific successes and failures to tailor future sessions. I am relaxed and informal, whilst still maintaining a high level of professionalism. I feel this is the best way to impart knowledge since people are more responsive to someone they can engage with. Ultimately, we will work at your own pace and target those areas you feel most concerned about. I will be punctual, friendly and helpful and will guarantee a positive experience. |

| Personal Description: I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language. |
Teaching Experience: I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions. |

| Personal Description: I am a freelance Multimedia Director and Photographer. As a Multimedia Director, working in the UK and Ireland, I have completed a range of film, documentary and corporate projects for various international clients. As a photographer I have produced various film, music and digital media projects for a range of clients, which include; Amnesty International, Alberts Productions and Image Entertainments (US) I also work as a multimedia trainer. Since 2009 I have been developing community multimedia training projects. My latest project has been funded by European Peace Fund and the Belfast City Council - Good Relations Fund. |
Teaching Experience: Senior Lecturer in Photography at Belfast Metropolitan College (BMC) (December 2006 - June 2008) Teaching 35mm (film) and digital photography to GCSE, A level and HND level students in day, evening and weekend classes. I taught students of various age groups (15 years old to 60+) Since 2009 I have worked as a multimedia trainer. I have been developing community multimedia training projects. My latest project has been funded by European Peace Fund and the Belfast City Council - Good Relations Fund. |
Tutoring Approach: One-to-one tutoring and mentoring is the best way to approach any kind of teaching. Each person has one of 3 to 4 ways of taking in information and learning new practical skills. In my time at BMC my past students gained high grades and developed their skills and confidence because I always took time to have a one-to-one tutoring sessions with them. This way I could make sure that each individual student was ready foe their exam. As a personal tutor I approach each student in a different way, according to their learning style, ability, skill, confidence (in ability) and confidence (in self) I also feel that it is very important for students, of creative arts, to be tutored, mentored or taught by a person who is actively working in the creative industries. I also offer careers advice for students. |

| Personal Description: Hi I am a student myself and so know how much pressure it can be to settle down and learn. I am extremely patient and emphatic and have little trouble forming relationships with young people. I was initially studying at Sussex University for an English Language degree but decided that I wanted my focus elsewhere so I am currently in the process of applying to do Social Work or Youth Work. |
Teaching Experience: I helped tutor a family friend so that they could pass GCSE English language. I hope to work with young people in the future and although I have little formal experience I seek to gain this through helping young people achieve their full potential. I also have helped my Mum through difficult areas of her adult literacy course. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to outline the areas of study most in need of help and to work to build on the strengths of my tutees, putting emphasis on the positive but working to build confidence in areas in need of development. My teaching technique involves a lot of fun but also developing a trusting relationship between tutor and tutee. As I am still quite young myself I feel I can relate well to young people in an unpatronising way. |

| Personal Description: I am 43 and an ex BBC Education Senior Producer where I was responsible for developing teaching and learning materials for TV, radio and the web. I have worked with schools, subject specialists, curriculum consultants and government departments responsible for education. My main projects were BBC Bitesize and the BBC Digital Curriculum, BBC JAM. I have a undergraduate Honours degree from the University of Oxford and an MPhil Research degree from the University of Glasgow |
Teaching Experience: Before joining the BBC I was a Lecturer in English and Media at Stow College and a tutor in the Dept of English Literature at Glasgow University. Prior to that I taught in a number of Sixth-Form Colleges in London, including Davies, Laing & Dick, Campbell Harris, Ashbourne and Collingham. |
Tutoring Approach: Young people have many different reasons for needing extra tutoring. But they generally fall in one of two areas: - need to catch up - want to excel The first step I take is to agree with the student what their goals are. Then we agree how we will collaborate to achieve this based on their learning style. This encourages the student to take responsibility, which means they are setting their own challenges and are more motivated. I will continually assess student's progress and monitor that against their targets, setting them realistic deadlines for all work. |

| Personal Description: I am a friendly and enthusiastic 31-year-old part-time lecturer and freelance filmmaker. I make a living writing and directing international music videos, award-winning short films and commercials, as well as lecturing, and running filmmaking workshops for under 16s. I have extensive professional experience in the areas of video production, from script-writing through to cameras and lighting, working with actors and editing. I also have extensive theoretical experience, having lectured TV and Video Production at BA and MA level. I studied film and media myself from GCSE through to degree level. |
Teaching Experience: Bournemouth Media School, Bournemouth University 4 years as part-time lecturer on BA and MA Television Production 3 years as .5 lecturer on BA and MA Television Production Guest lecturer Thames Valley University Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication New York Film Academy in London Co-ordinator 2 x First Light Projects, Lighthouse Arts and Training, Brighton Rolling Sound Educational Projects, London |
Tutoring Approach: There are as many approaches to tutoring as there are tutees and tutors, and I aim to provide an approach that is unique and individual to the tutee, depending on their strengths, weaknesses and learning styles. It's good to spend a bit of time getting to know the student, discussing their goals for the sessions, and figuring out the teaching method that will be most valuable to them. This way we can progress together, with regular checks as to how the session is working, and moulding it to the student's preference. It's also important that I provide a situation that engages and stimulates the student, whether through referencing films, television, and other media, or actually enabling practical exercises. The most valuable way of learning is through actually doing it, and getting a real sense of the issues that arise from that experience. "Practice without theory is empty. Theory without practice, blind." Immanuel Kant |

| Personal Description: I graduated from the University of Sussex this year and am staying in Brighton because I love it here. Having enjoyed my time in education and achieving top results I feel that I would like to help others do the same and so I am turning to tutoring. I am intelligent, creative and compassionate and I think I will be able to help pupils become more confident in the subject they are struggling with, have more fun with it and feel prepared for their exams. In my spare time I sew and knit (which I am also happy to teach!) and have just started playing the ukulele. |
Teaching Experience: I do not have any teaching experience in an official capacity but I have taught many of my friends to knit and also helped my younger sister when she found her homework difficult. I have also assisted my friends with editing essays and CVs and in preparing for job interviews. |
Tutoring Approach: I think the process should be student-led and will establish with my pupils where their strengths and weaknesses lie, what they are finding difficult and what they want to achieve. I hope to ensure my pupils thoroughly understand the concepts they are grappling with as well as being ready for an exam. I know what it is like to have a crisis of confidence over a school subject and will endeavour to restore the student's faith in themselves and help them to enjoy overcoming obstacles and improving their results. |

| Personal Description: I was born in Cardiff in 1965. I attended high school in the capital city, and left to travel the world in the late 1980s. I attended the University of Nottingham as an undergraduate in 1994 and focused on the subject areas of History, Literature, Critical Theory, Art History, and Native American Studies. I graduated from Nottingham with a 2:1 Sing. Hons. in July 1997. I then left the UK for the US and remained overseas for 11 years. In May 1999, I received an MA from the University of Wyoming at Laramie (American Studies Dept) where I specialized in History, Literature, and Film Studies. In October 1999, after graduating from the University of Wyoming, I was accepted onto a part-time PhD program at the University of Nottingham American Studies Dept. My doctoral thesis, available at the British Library, examines the importance of visuality on constructions of the urban landscape. My specialist field is Visual Culture, however, my thesis also encompasses the subject areas of History, Literature, and Film Studies. I received my PhD in July 2007. In order to fund my doctoral research, I taught History at a private university in eastern Iowa -- St. Ambrose University (see teaching experience). In addition, during this period, I also worked as an Item Writer for ACT. This job entailed developing and writing high school examination questions in the fields of English Literature, History, and Political Science. I received my PhD in July 2007 at which point I moved to New York City and worked for six months as a writer for a multinational marketing company. I relocated to the UK in July 2008. |
Teaching Experience: I have a strong commitment to teaching as well as several years of experience. My earliest teaching experience dates back to 1997 when I was a teaching assistant whilst completing my Masters degree at the University of Wyoming. From August 1997 to May 1999 I taught an introduction to American Studies course which focused primarily on aspects of American history through the lens of film, television, and literature. Upon completing my Masters degree in 1999, I was accepted to the University of Nottingham's American Studies PhD program (part-time). Here, during my first year, I assisted in the teaching of a Twentieth Century American Cultural History module (under Prof. Margaret Walsh - see referee), heading seminar groups of between 12 and 15 undergraduate students. In 2000, I moved to the United States and took a part-time position at St. Ambrose University, Iowa. From 2000 to 2007 I lectured and headed seminars on an undergraduate degree course in Social and Cultural History (a course that I developed in its entirety). |
Tutoring Approach: My teaching philosophy involves encouraging students to engage in subject matter as closely as possible: to explore topics in ways that seek to establish accessible contexts and clearer understandings. I firmly believe that by contextualizing a subject, a student can grasp its meaning far more readily. I also believe in completely open dialogue between student and teacher. In my experience, developing this kind of professional "openness" makes for productive and effective learning. Rather than simply learning subjects "parrot-fashion," I actively encourage students to work around topics: to discuss themes and issues and to ask questions of them. I have found that this approach is extremely effective not only in allowing students to take on board quite complex concepts, but also in developing and nurturing their analytical skills. This method of teaching I have found to be crucial in allowing students better and more clear understandings of a given subject, and is particularly useful if a student is preparing for the step up to university level learning. My teaching record over the past nine years has been exemplary. Student and faculty evaluations are available upon request. |

| Personal Description: I would call myself a facilitator instead of a teacher and I experiment with various pedagogies in order to facilitate the learning of a student. Given that I have taught in various schools for the past ten years I am experienced to deal with Special Education Needs pupils, pupils whose first language is not English (EAL), average pupils and also gifted and talented. As a facilitator I know how to bring up the best in each pupil in order to promote his or her learning. I also work closely with the National Curriculum in order to ensure that my students improve not only their writing skills but also speaking and listening ones. I am acquainted with the AQA, OCR, EdExcel and Welsh examination boards across Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Given that I have prepared students for their SATs, GCSE, AS and A levels exams for many years, I use assessment criteria to raise academic standards. When I tutor someone I provide all the resources, give on going extra supports (examples, emails and phone) |
Teaching Experience: I have taught is several schools (comprehensive, academy, RC,..) I am able to adapt myself with different students coming from different school backgrounds. |
