Personal Description:
I am a very keen and enthusiastic university graduate and love to help others learn. I specialize with children and young adults. I am a good role model as I am bubbly, show confidence and balance my career with my social life including my sports (rock climbing and snowboarding).

I have a range of experience in childcare and tuition and find different ways for my pupils to understand the materials they are learning. I find ways in which they can relate to the information which helps them retain the information for longer.
I have had several years of experience with private tutoring producing great results (please ask if you would like a reference).

Teaching Experience:

All throughout my University degree I was working part-time at Explore Learning, a Maths and English tuition center designed to help children with their national curriculum between the ages of 5 and 14. This has given me valuable experience on many different teaching techniques as well as keeping up to date with the new learning strategies that children are using in their day to day learning at school.
My one on one tutoring experience ranges from GCSE level to Primary Maths and English including other topics such as Current affairs.
On a sporting level, I gained my Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors qualification in 2009 and have continued to teach snowboarding over in Italy with Interski in my university holidays.

Quote from a reference: 'Rabia will definitely miss your cheery and happy persona. She has had other tutors but with nowhere near the enthusiasm and effort that you put in! She looks forward to you coming and has a real connection with you.'

Tutoring Approach:

I have many different approaches to learning, dependant on the age of the pupil. I like to use targets and rewards to keep motivation levels high and learning is fun by relating the subject to my tutee's everyday life. I ensure there are several reviews and assessments to enhance progression and keep on track.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate in English, German and Politics with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

Since 2001 I have been engaged on a university research and publishing project, based in London and Cambridge, that charts the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, from Francis Bacon to James Joyce.

A significant part of my professional role involves editing and proof-reading academic texts, and I'm happy to undertake this for tutees.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and curator of exhibitions on contemporary social and political cartoons, such as 'Coping with the Relations', commissioned by the Goethe-Institut and British Council as an international touring exhibition. Amongst other publications I co-authored the book 'Deutschland und seine Nachbarn' in 2000 as a resource for political education in German schools.

I am an enthusiastic European with a keen interest in global affairs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students in English, Politics and German for many years, as well as working as a business language trainer in firms in the City and West End.

Previously I taught English, German and Politics in England (GCSE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany. I also taught English as a foreign language to trainee German teachers of English and for Academic & Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Germany, for 8 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience, appropriate pace and empathetic attention to an individual's learning needs are essential for anyone helping others to understand often complex ideas and concepts. I also believe successful learning results from both the learner's and teacher's motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject. These are principles that inform my role as a tutor.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly where if a foreign language is involved. I believe the intensity of experience such interaction provides is the next best thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the context in which it is naturally spoken. This is borne out by my own experience as a foreign-language learner.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced English teacher who is currently teaching in an inner city school in London. Having taught for most of my adult life, I am confident that I can help students achieve the results that they are looking for, as I have worked with a wide variety of students, both in and out of the classroom. I have a sound understanding of students' needs and how to approach them to engage and inspire the best out of them by delivering interesting and varied lessons using resources that are current and relatable.

I have taught across all levels, including 11+, GCSE, A-level, university, and TEFL.

Teaching Experience:

Kingsdale Foundation School. London . English Teacher

Bristol City Academy, Bristol. English Teacher
Andalusia Academy, Bristol. English Teacher

Private tutor: I have been a private tutor and have taught regularly since the start of my university degree. I have tutored many different students taking exams ranging from the 11+, GCSE, and A-level standards. References are available on request.

King's Behaviour Support Unit, Teaching Assistant,

Wheelers Lane Boys Technology College, Teaching Assistant,

Deptford Green Secondary School, Learning Support Teacher, London
I worked one on one with different students who had a wide range of learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and ADHD, as well as autism. I worked across the curriculum in all subjects and in particular, I was solely responsible for the numeracy of certain students, helping them understand concepts that they were previously having difficulty with.

ICPNA Peru: I was a teacher at the ICPNA institute of English in Cusco, Peru. I had four full classes to teach and assess. I was expected to follow a month long curriculum, at the end of which the students take a test to assess whether they are ready for the next stage. The classes were mixed with both young and old students, from the ages of 14 to 40. The class sizes ranged from 17 - 22 students in one class.

Jan - March 2008: Taught English and basic maths to 4-6 year olds in the Taleem-ul-Islam High School, situated in small Indian town. I was often left with a class of 30 - 40 students. I implemented new ideas which the students found exciting and different (e.g learning through play, acting and drawing etc).

Tutoring Approach:

At first my students to talk me through what they are learning and where they feel their weaknesses lie. Talking about the subject, about what they like/do not like gives me a better understanding of how to make the student feel more comfortable in their subject. For younger students, and where necessary, an assessment is used to determine their level.

I have a bank of materials that is to date and engaging.

For coursework and homework that is due to be handed into schools, I am always willing and able to proof read and correct. I am happy to help a student through coursework giving them pointers along the way (by no means doing it for them!!).

I will always encourage self study for the student to do at home although I do not normally set homework, unless the student requests, or I feel that more practice is needed.

Personal Description:
New Bulletin, Tuesday October 28th

The new year is settling down nicely with all students progressing well or better! GCSE coursework, A level essay-writing, A level coursework, Oxford University HA Test, these are the issues on the table as I write, alongside helping with the usual content issues: Why did this happen? How did this lead to that? Why is this important? Why isn't this? What's happening here? What does it mean? The eternal questions for historians at all levels.

Above all - perhaps - it's the training of the student that's as important as anything. Getting them to see, to understand what taking an A level means, how an A level student needs to organize themselves. This is not about keeping your folder neat but how to organize yourself mentally, psychologically. How to approach the whole thing as if this is just a large project that needs to be managed carefully and well.

I am still available on weekend mornings and Tuesday late afternoon/early evening. If those times don't suit, just ask, tell me roughly where you are, and I'll see if I can fit you in.

Now to some duller stuff.

August 2014
Some very gratifying successes this August: 90%+ across 3 taken History exams w/ one student: C at AS Summer 2013: 6 ums marks off an A*, Summer 2014. WOW! This is what happens when student and tutor work in harmony, and when the student is really hungry to learn and improve. Also, AS ECONOMICS! My first AS level Economics teaching, taking on a student "who has given up" according to his teachers, on course for a U. We worked on one of the two modules for just 4 weeks: grade D achieved in the exam. This is what happens when the student trusts the tutor's optimism and follows advice.

So, my name is Craig, a very dedicated one-to-one tutor of History, Politics and English. I offer an exceptionally high level of expertise as a history, politics (and English) teacher, teacher of essay writing, exam writing and exam taking. This is based on well over two decades of experience in schools and in homes. Though I have been teaching a long time, I am continually striving to improve the quality of my work, constantly analyzing the effect of my advice on performance and trying to perfect the art and craft of the job.

When not tutoring, most of my time is spent working (hard!) as a student too! I am just about to begin the third year of my PhD, supervised by Professor Tony Collins of De Montfort University, Leicester, undertaking research in 20th century British history. (Rugby fans might like to note at this point that Tony is the number one rugby historian - of all codes - in the world. All his books are very well worth reading.)

I am exceptionally well qualified. I have an MA (2011) in History and am now two years into my doctoral studies. I have written fiction and non-fiction. I have had experience in being an A level marker with an exam board. I have had long experience in teaching and preparing whole History & Govnt. & Politics year groups for A level, producing outstanding results.

I take on all types of students. Some need a lot of training, some need to be dragged away from a collision-course with failure, some need finessing, some need waking up, some need inspiring, some need a boost in confidence; some need more intellectual stimulation; all can and do improve their writing.

My chief strengths are: 1. I know how to teach students to write. 2. I know how to prepare them for exams. 3. My methods are clear, simple and work beautifully. 4. I care very much about the progression of my students. 5. I treat my work with them with the utmost seriousness. 6. But I'm a human being with a sense of humour! 7. I am very, very experienced. 8. As a parent of three children who have gone through the school and university experience, I understand what both the student and the parent is going through.

I am very happy to work with students online. I have found it to work extremely well.

More on my current research project...
I am currently working on doctoral research into the BBC, sport and social class, 1922-64, with Tony Collins at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is the director of DMU's International Centre for Sports History & Culture, a department of world renown, and the leading British powerhouse of sports history. I am very proud to be working with Tony and within the department. Undergrad students should note that I am working under one of the world's best historians, a 3-time winner of the prestigious Aberdare Prize for Sports Books.

Becoming a student again, beginning with the masters degree course at De Montfort University in 2010 has really helped my teaching. As well as keeping on top of developments in academic history. I am much better read! I know more! It has also taken me right back in touch with what it feels like to be a student and all that follows from that. It has also enabled me to extend my tutoring potential to undergraduates and masters students.

I'm happily married with 3 children fully grown (it's only their father who's lagging behind).

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 24 years in secondary schools in Bromley, Kent and Derbyshire where I now live. History was my specialism but I was head of Politics for a number of years in the last part of my school career. I also taught Geography, Economics, English and R.E.

Since beginning to tutor students, I have taught history, Government & Politics and English (including basic literacy skills to a young person with dyslexia). Courses taught have mostly been those at GCSE and A level.

I have taught a wide range of topics within French, German, Russian and British history. The list includes the usual suspects: causes of World Wars 1 and 2, Hitler and the Third Reich, the Russian revolution and Stalin as well as aspects of Irish and Chinese history and 19th century France and Russia. Since becoming a PhD student my expertise level in terms of content knowledge has leapt forward in 20th century British history. However...

...it isn't the historical content of the course that matters so much: technique is the key; know-how; how to write; how to take an exam; how to prepare for the whole exam period; how to approach the whole thing mentally, psychologically; how to be the best you can be; how to be successful - end of story!

I have worked with students on exam preparation and revision, coursework planning and execution and essay writing techniques. It is here that the battle to improve and to reach a fulfillment of potential, often with the reward of high grades, is usually won.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't tinker around the margins of issues. I give students something all those who come for help require: a method to use to dispose of the problems posed by the issue of writing that dreaded thing: the essay! Not a tinkering round the edges of the thing, a tip here, a bit of advice there, but a comprehensive yet simple and absolutely clear set of actions and principles through which the student can fulfill their potential: show the examiner what they know and understand of the topic.

Following on from the above, my approach to tutoring begins and ends with the drive to be successful. If I did not unfailingly improve students, help them to achieve the grades they want and need I would not be writing this.

In between comes what we might describe as philosophy and methods. It's hard to write about methods without immediately mentioning what I suppose might be my strongest "offer" (I don't much like that word but there, I've used it). As a schoolteacher I developed a unique but simple method of essay planning and writing that achieved stunning results. So successful has it been over 20 years that I am astonished that no one else seems to have found it. But in my experience up to February 2013 no teacher has. Essay writing is still something that many, many students find difficult and confusing. It really does not need to be this way.

Obviously content issues are hugely important and here I rely on my communication skills which have yet to let me down! These, naturally, go hand in hand with a knowledge of British and European history across a variety of years which has grown over recent years particularly through my MA studies, my PhD research and through working with students on a range of historical periods, topics and people. I find myself to be adaptable to different types of students. I am able to adapt my language and my technique to fit the situation. I am also somewhat stubborn in that I never give up on solving a problem. If we have to go over time, so be it!

Finally, some more of my personal philosophies of teaching. I believe that students generally do not achieve their potential. With each student I aim to take them to standards (and grades) that they did not think were possible. Without exception I push, push and push until we run out of time as we inevitably do. I also do not believe in lost causes. Much can be achieved in a very short space of time. I have seen this happen over and over again.

There is much more to be said but that, I hope, will do for now.

Craig

Personal Description:
I began tutoring during my Philosophy of Science MSc at the London School of Economics. Subsequently I decided to pursue a career in science and began to train as a geologist at Birkbeck College, University of London in a 4-year degree program while continuing to work as a tutor. Over the course of the last 3 years my teaching career gained momentum and I made the decision to pause my second degree to focus on teaching.

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating I have gained thousands of hours of tutoring experience over a period of 4 years. While I specialise in teaching maths at 11+, 13+ and GCSE level, I also have a wealth of experience in teaching sciences (13+, GCSE), maths (A-level), English (11+, 13+, GCSE, A-level) and philosophy (A-level and degree level). Alongside my independent work I am a senior tutor at three high end London tuition agencies.*

I have successfully prepared students for entry into a wide range of schools including Bancroft, Channing, City of London, Eton, Forest, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer School, Haberdashers', Highgate, North London Collegiate School, Queen's College, Sevenoaks, South Hampstead, St. Paul's and UCS.

I have worked as an assessor for a London tuition agency since 2010. I conduct assessments which potential tutors must pass before they are allowed to work for the agency. Assessing other tutors has given me excellent insights as to how to improve my own teaching.

*I am not permitted to name these here, but I can provide references once contact details are exchanged.

Tutoring Approach:

The key to my approach is keeping the student's mind as active as possible. My lessons are extremely questions-based and seek to guide a student to explore concepts rather than merely deposit information. Since this approach requires more engagement from the pupil, the material is better retained and more thoroughly understood.

I find the science of memory fascinating and have carefully researched and tested various memory techniques that I now find invaluable during my lessons. The luxury of one-to-one tuition is that each lesson can be perfectly tailored to the individual student. Over the first few sessions, I determine how the pupil best absorbs information and what teaching style they find the most engaging. The result is highly efficient learning which generally manages to be good fun as well.

Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark small amounts of homework free of charge. Detailed proof reading and feedback for coursework assignments for those I do not regularly teach is charged at my hourly rate. Group sessions are available the charge is 50% of the normal fee for each additional student.

Personal Description:
I have a degree in Journalism and English and a Certificate in Education. I am able to tutor GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature, ESOL English Literature, GCSE Geography, GCSE Psychology and Media Studies to A level. I have given tuition to individuals and small groups of students at undergraduate level and offer friendly, relaxed lessons individually, or in groups up to five people, tailored exactly to what the pupil requires

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of one to one tutoring with both school and college students and adults, plus larger group teaching. I have been doing private tuition in my own home for four years now and its better for students to come to me as its a pressure free environment.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to teach from my home:
My home is quiet and fairly minimalistic. Lessons are held in my offce and I have a computer and Ipad that students can use.

I use the first meeting to talk about any difficulties in learning the subject in a formal educational setting and discuss any specific learning difficulties you may have. Personal Description:
I graduated from Oxford in July 2011. Since graduating I have worked as an actor; however, like most actors it is unusual to find oneself in full time acting work for the whole year so along with this I offer personal tutoring (which I often continue to offer when involved in acting projects).

Unlike most actors who tutor English, I am much more knowledgeable in the sciences. At A-Level I studied Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Drama & General Studies and obtained 5 A grades (prior to A* grades were brought in). Prior to training in Oxford I began a Medical Degree but decided acting was where my heart. I still however, have a massive passion for science and particularly loved teaching this whilst living in Ghana on my gap year. I've now been tutoring SCIENCE, ENGLISH and DRAMA for over a year with tutees ranging from GCSE students to adults.

I am confident, possess common sense and am able to communicate extremely well. I look at things as challenges rather than problems. I pick things up quickly and like to be pushed in at the deep end.
I also live by the moral, 'that if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing right'. Which is why I take pride in being patient, reliant, mature and having excellent organisational skills. In short I'm a people person.

Teaching Experience:

- Personal Tutor (since 2011)
- 5-month voluntary teaching experience in Ghana (large classes and 1 to 1)
- Wealth of childcare/creche experience
- Drama based workshop experience
- Mentoring to Lower 6th
- Workshop experience with disabled youngsters
- LAC trained
- 200+ hours of accredited voluntary work

Feedback

Tracey: "William is a great tutor! He is very patient, and extremely well prepared for each lesson. He has an easy, fun and interesting approach to learning. After two lessons, I feel very confident I can achieve success in my exams with his tuition."

Tutoring Approach:

- Why tutor? Getting to know the tutee

- Initial assessment of needs and requirements. Identifying personal needs

- Particular areas of work needed (in line with syllabus) i.e. homework, particular topics, confidence in class etc.

- Regular tutoring/Needs must basis agreement. Regular papers and homework supplied dependant on tutee

Personal Description:
I have been a teacher all my professional life, although for ten years I worked in the theatre as an actor, fight director and singer. I love teaching and I love music. Most importantly, perhaps, I have never stopped learning!

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English, French and German for 25 years. I studied English at Oxford; worked in Germany, studied in Spain and have my main home in France. My first GCSE Spanish class all achieved A* and A grades. I recently trained in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, so I feel up to date with current teaching methodology. Nevertheless, I adapt my teaching style and methods to benefit my tutees. I teach adult evening classes and give private tuition in French, Spanish, German and English Literacy.

Tutoring Approach:

I will come to your home and talk to you about what your learning requirements are and will tutor in order for you to maximise your potential in line with your requirements. All tutees have different learning styles and preferences, too, so I will pick up on yours and shape our lessons accordingly. We will work proactively, and there will be specific goals and targets for each lesson so that you will be able to chart your progress. My colleagues think I have a great sense of humour, and I have sometimes found it to be helpful in a teaching situation. I am, however, totally professional in the conduct of my lessons and tutorials.

Personal Description:
Retired, deputy headteacher of a primary school in London. Aged 59. I have two children of my own, aged 12 and 14.

Teaching Experience:

Taught in primary and secondary schools for 34 years. Over 20 years experience as a deputy headteacher. Have taught the full age range of primary school but mostly KS2 (age 7-11). My main role over the last 15 years has been a Year 6 SATS teacher so I have lots of experience for SATS preparation. I also did a lot of work in booster groups in Maths and English, moving children from level 3 to level 4. I have now been tutoring for a year with children aged between 7 and 14. For the last 3 years I have been a Key Stage 2 SATs marker.

Tutoring Approach:

My main aim is to improve the ability of the children in the subjects chosen. Most of my tutees find the one-to-one personal touch invaluable because it allows me to quickly identify the areas of difficulty and devise a learning programme to meet these at a pace which the tutee finds comfortable. Many of the parents have commented that one-to-one sessions have rapidly improved the tutee's confidence and has frequently resulted in them being moved up groups in the classroom. Other parents have asked me to prioritise my teaching time working with their children on school homework. I like to create a friendly but purposeful atmosphere. I always give time to the parents at the end of each session so they are kept completely informed about my aims and strategies. I have years of experience and all the relevant materials to support the children in these subjects.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has also been in tutoring - within groups as well as one-to-one.
I have taught KS2, KS3 and GCSE English, Science and Mathematics.

Personal Description:
Hello, my name's Stuart and I teach privately in the SW area of London. My subject areas are English and English Literature at GCSE Examination Level, English as a Foreign Language, Practical Drama, Acting, Elocution and Public Speaking Examinations for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

Teaching Experience:

I began teaching early in my life and am almost approaching 15 years experience. My experience is wide ranging and includes teaching in Secondary Schools, Colleges (I was head of performing arts for many years) a university level lecturer - I have taught on some very famous acting courses, as well as teaching privately for acting and speech examinations for LAMDA. I am currently a senior examiner in Speech and Drama for a very prestigious examination board.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning has just got to be fun at the same time as being rewarding to the students education. I like it when students smile because they are discovering, learning and enjoying at the same time. I like to mix theory and practical work together when possible as I have found that this helps learning. For students wanting to develop their acting and/or speech skills the lessons are very practical and I give you plenty of hand-outs to help you on your way (exams are available if you want them but you do not need to take exams to study with me - what you do need is to have fun!.

Personal Description:
I have graduated from York St John University with a degree in Education Studies. This has enabled me to teach across the primary age range in a variety of settings, teaching children with specific learning needs.

Tutoring Approach:

Rooted in my educational ethos is personalised learning. Therefore each tutoring session is tailored to the individual and their needs and interests. This allows for maximum progress in a positive and fun environment. I begin each session by assessing the needs of the individual to develop a series of progressive sessions. Above all I want people to enjoy my sessions and develop a love for music and/or learning.

Personal Description:
I went to Cranleigh School (A Levels: English, Maths, Theatre Studies and a Music AS Level) and went on to read English at Corpus Christi, Cambridge graduating with a First class degree. At university I was heavily involved in Drama and the Footlights. Returning to London in 2008 I founded Rogues' Gallery Theatre company before teaching English and Drama at Sherborne School in Dorset. I've been tutoring or teaching English in schools for just over eight years.

I'm a freelance theatre director and the artistic director of Rogues' Gallery Theatre company. Until recently I was the Associate Director on Shakespeare In Love, which played West End from July 2014 - April 2015. I was also the Associate Director of Chariots of Fire. I've also assisted Richard Eyre and Mike Leigh.

I also enjoy running, love cricket and cycling and am a rather rubbish but very enthusiastic guitar player.

Teaching Experience:

I was a full-time English teacher at Sherborne School in Dorset, teaching a full range of classes from 13-18. During this time I also marked Common Entrance and Scholarship papers for the school. I've been tutoring or teaching English in schools for over eight years. I am also happy to teach Maths up to 13+ having received full marks in Maths A Level.

I have extensive experience in the following areas:

University Dissertations (English, Drama and other humanities where the emphasis is on essay technique and structure.)

Oxbridge Applications specialising in Cambridge English. Six of my students have successfully gained entrance to Cambridge Colleges to read English.

A and AS Level English (OCR, AQA, Edexcel.) Good familiarity with all major set texts.

GCSE: (IGCSE, OCR, AQA and Edexel) Good familiarity with all major set texts.

13+ Entrance Schools have included King's Wimbledon, Harrow, Cranleigh, Sherborne, Cheltenham.

11+Entrance in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

I have considerable experience with dyslexic and SEN pupils, having myself overcome mild dyslexia and taught many of the lower sets whilst at Sherborne.
I regularly give talks and run workshops in Public Schools on dramatic texts in the GCSE and A Level English Syllabuses as well as run workshops and judge competitions for Public Speaking. Institutions include Marlborough, The Leys Cambridge, St James Ashford, Kingston University.

Other relevant Experience:

I ran a weekly Saturday School for Westminster Refugee Consortium helping students from yrs 9-11 overcome their diverse backgrounds to succeed at school.

I've also worked for National Youth Theatre with highly challenging students ages 14-21 excluded from the school system.

Finally, I'm a trustee of Schools in South Sudan, a charity working to bring stability through education to a volatile region of Central Africa.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style is heavily dictated by my student. My first lesson is all about discovering what type of learner they are. We'll also talk about their interests and goals. This seemingly innocuous conversation often holds the key to motivating them towards success.

To my mind learning is always best done actively. I've personally never learned much by being talked at so that's not how I teach. I ask lots of questions and expect a good level of engagement during a session.

I also believe that at the heart of even the trickiest problems is a series of simple solutions. I aim to make those simple solutions clear and to help students to think clearly and effective for themselves.

Above all, learning doesn't happen very well if a student isn't engaged. I'm good at helping my students become interested in what they're studying and, even if it takes a little while, it's more than worth it.

Through my years in education I have always had a friendly attitude to those in need of tutoring. Through university, I set up a study group where not only did I tutor but others helped each other, with my guidance, through their strengths and weaknesses to overcome the task.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to find out first hand where the student seems to be struggling and start from there. I encourage the student to ask questions and to not be afraid if they do not understand the concept. Through good communication with the student I can find their weaknesses and help them turn them into strengths.
