Personal Description:
I am a very keen and enthusiastic university graduate and love to help others learn. I specialize with children and young adults. I am a good role model as I am bubbly, show confidence and balance my career with my social life including my sports (rock climbing and snowboarding).

I have a range of experience in childcare and tuition and find different ways for my pupils to understand the materials they are learning. I find ways in which they can relate to the information which helps them retain the information for longer.
I have had several years of experience with private tutoring producing great results (please ask if you would like a reference).

Teaching Experience:

All throughout my University degree I was working part-time at Explore Learning, a Maths and English tuition center designed to help children with their national curriculum between the ages of 5 and 14. This has given me valuable experience on many different teaching techniques as well as keeping up to date with the new learning strategies that children are using in their day to day learning at school.
My one on one tutoring experience ranges from GCSE level to Primary Maths and English including other topics such as Current affairs.
On a sporting level, I gained my Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors qualification in 2009 and have continued to teach snowboarding over in Italy with Interski in my university holidays.

I have 20 years of experience in publishing as a writer and editor and am passionate about nurturing English language skills and a love of English literature. I graduated from the University of Stirling with an honours degree in English Literature and have also taught English as a foreign language. My experience in publishing has trained me to write concisely and economically while retaining an imaginative grasp on a piece of work, a skill invaluable in writing essays and examination answers; and especially useful in assisting students with the new written assessments that, in Higher English, from 2016, comprise 30 per cent of the final examination mark.

I can empathise with students who are tussling with English, relish improving a person's understanding and enjoyment of the subject and take satisfaction from helping to develop their abilities not only in the practical sense of improving their powers of analysis and understanding of texts but in helping them think imaginatively and creatively. As a personal tutor, I have a proven record of upgrading students' performances, especially at Higher level, and have, in several instances, improved so dramatically pupils who were on course to fail Higher English that they went on to achieve an 'A' grade in their Higher examination.

Teaching Experience:

I have five years' tutoring experience. In 2012, 65 per cent of my tutees for Higher English achieved an 'A' grade, with several Band 1s among them. In the 2013 Higher English examination, 75 per cent of my tutees obtained either an A or a B, with slightly more than half of those obtaining an A and several obtaining a distinction in doing so. In 2012 and 2013, all of my tutees at Standard Grade achieved either a band 1 or a Band 2. Similarly, in 2014, all National 5 students achieved an A or a B. At Higher, in 2014, 85 per cent of tutees achieved an A or a B, with the remainder, several of whom had been struggling severely, delighted to have achieved a pass. In 2015, 85 per cent of my tutees achieved an A in their Higher, Sixth Year Studies and National 5 examinations. The other 15 per cent achieved a B.

With my help, tutees have obtained the vital English qualification that was essential to them obtaining a place at such universities as: Cambridge, Oxford, Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, Stirling, Strathclyde, Glasgow and the Glasgow College of Art.

I also have experience teaching English as a Foreign Language, in Egypt, both in private schools and in tutoring young people on an individual basis.

In publishing, I was frequently chosen to tutor new entrants to the profession because of my precise use of language and empathetic nature on a one-to-one level.

I studied English Literature to honours level at the University of Stirling and aim to pass on my love of the subject to students through establishing a rapport with them and recommending to them the type of literature that would complement their learning and enable them to derive pleasure from studying English.

Tutoring Approach:

On first meeting, I will discuss with the student how they wish to improve and which aspects of their English studies they feel require greatest attention. I will adapt tutorials to suit the student's needs and course of study. Additional exercises and study guides will be developed together, so that the student can participate with enthusiasm and purpose in the tutorials. This allows me to work to the student's strengths, to help them manage their problem areas more effectively and to derive greater enjoyment from the subject. I will adopt a measured approach and will use my communication skills to ensure that the student understands and absorbs each aspect of the lesson before progressing to the next stage. I am a very experienced teacher, head of faculty, head of sixth form, examiner and writer. I have recently worked for one of the major examination boards on the new specifications for religious studies at both G.C.S.S and A2 Level.

During my career as a teacher I have taught philosophy and religious studies to Advanced level and English, history, religious studies, geography and citizenship to G.C.S.E. I also specialise in developing study skills and examination techniques in a range of subjects. Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience at both G.C.S.E. and Advanced level has been extensive. I am an examiner for two major exam boards and have diverse experience of creating original teaching resources tailored to the needs of pupils.

I have spent most of my career teaching across the ability and age range in 11-18 comprehensive schools although I have also taught in the independent sector.

I am also a part-time on-line tutor for one of the Oxford colleges.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the key to success for most pupils is to develop their skills and self-confidence to enhance their ability to successfully complete their examination by developing study skills and examination techniques.

My first session with a tutee and their parents is to establish their needs and goals. Together we draw up a plan of the work which we will pursue. This plan will be reviewed regularly and a progress report compiled.
Each of the subsequent sessions comprises of:
review of any homework set
review of any problems which have occurred that week
lesson on a topic previously decided upon
My primary aim is to help my tutees overcome any difficulties which they are having with their work and to help them to achieve their goals both in the short-term and the long term. Secondly, I aim to give my tutees confidence in their own abilities and to help them develop their skills necessary to succeed in their examinations.
Relevant homework is set as a means of reinforcing the development of skills since assessment and feedback procedures largely rely on this.

I have recently worked as a Maths and English tutor with Explore learning. I taught Maths and English to children aged 4 - 14 of various abilities. I received training in the National Curriculum as well as current tutoring methods. I have a particular strength in preparing students for 11+ exams.

In Bristol I assisted on and led various Drama workshops including; introduction to Shakespeare, confidence building and audition technique.

I have an MA degree in English from Cambridge University and am an IGCSE examiner for the Cambridge International Examinations Board.

My early background in retail management, several years at director level in international advertising, then thirty years as a teacher, with theatre running as a constant thread throughout my life, all combine to make me a particularly effective communicator.

I have been learning Spanish for over 10 years, and lived in Spain for a year as part of my degree, where I gained fluency in the language, and was awarded a distinction for my level of spoken Spanish on returning to Edinburgh and completing my degree. Students and parents both want academic success - high grades and the pride that comes with achievement. I believe any student, regardless of ability, can become a high achiever. I know from years of experience that students under perform because they have not learned the right approach or pathway to success.

Any school has the same essential components: attendance, class participation, attentiveness, homework and testing. Most teachers give students points for each category; however, simply showing up on a regular basis and "doing" homework will not guarantee a good grade. The difference between average performance (a "C" student) and high performance (an "A" student) turns on what a student does outside of class.

While no two students learn exactly alike in exactly the same manner, all students must struggle with independent learning. Where do I do my homework? When do I do my homework? How do I do my homework? Am I well organized? If not, how can I become better organized? Do I know how to study for quizzes and tests? If not, how can I develop better study skills? Students who discover the answers to these questions become high achievers.

Students can spend hours working very hard but working inefficiently to the point their effort fails to translate into results. I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge with over two and a half years' tutoring experience. I hold a BA Hons (Cantab.) degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic studies, an academic field involving a broad range of skills, ranging from literary and historical analysis to linguistic history and translations, with particular emphasis on the learning of languages.

I have an English-related degree (in History- which included some English modules within the degree), and I have a Level 1 City & Guilds Teaching Certificate in English.

I also have a proven track record of improving student's grades, regularly improving them by 1 to 2 grades, often in less than 1 year's tuition. For example, in English, I recently tutored a student at GCSE level- he had been predicted C grades in both Language & Literature, but after just 8 months' tuition with me, he achieved an A in his GCSE English Language exam and an A* in his English Literature exam. This is typical of my success over the years as a tutor.

I use National Curriculum Resources for all tuitions. Furthermore, I have great experience tutoring all abilities from the gifted and talented to those with Learning Disabilities (I have regularly taught students with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Asberges).

I am a passionate historian who since finishing my Masters degree in 2014 has continued to study and write about history and politics amongst other subjects.

I have been teaching privately for the past seven years and this has ranged from home schooling to teaching several students at once. I have experience teaching at GCSE/AS/A2 and undergraduate level, and teaching one on one or groups of several students. Although I mostly teach history I teach all of the subjects offered and I am extremely proficient at teaching exam technique and essay structuring.

I am passionate about teaching English and love helping those who struggle just as much as stretching those who find it easier. I have 17 year teaching experience and in that time, have taught children up to the age of 13; helping older children prepare for 13+ Public School Entrance exams as well as teaching younger children to master phonics, basic reading skills and spelling. I am an experienced SATs marker enabling me to help children to prepare for these exams. I have been teaching for 17 years and was most recently a teacher of years 5 to 8 English and French at a well-respected private school for children aged 5 - 18. I have an excellent understanding of all aspects of child development and the need to make learning meaningful and fun. I am passionate about reading as well as all types of writing and am a member of the National Handwriting Association. I am also able to include IT in the classroom when necessary.

Tutoring Approach:

This depends entirely on the needs of the child. After an initial consultation, I would be able to offer support with reading and comprehension and/or writing (whether it be handwriting or speed of writing - or both). It might be a case of helping your child to understand English grammar as well as teaching them techniques to enable them to include it effectively in their own writing. If it is a case of preparing for forthcoming exams, then this can be done by using past papers as well as my own materials devised after extensive experience of helping children prepare for all types of exams. You may just want some extra support for your child over the summer and prior to the start of a busy new term. Whatever it is, it will be done with empathy and enthusiasm.

Personal Description:
My name is Shira and I have been a teacher for 14 years! I have taught thousands of students over the years ranging from age three years old in my beginning years, all the way through primary and secondary school. I then continued to teach secondary school and also began teaching at university where I lectured first year students in Media/Communication studies as well as Writing Skills.

My teaching style is very positive and enthusiastic. As a very experienced teacher, I am able to deal with students of all abilities and strengths. I motivate my students to achieve their maximum potential and have always been affirmed by the school and by parents for helping my students to thrive and flourish by encouraging them and supporting them in their journey to success. I invest in each student and it is always so rewarding to watch them soar to great heights.

I am also a journalist/copy writer and marketing/branding consultant and freelance for a variety of publications, small businesses/charities and corporations. I have helped hundreds of students with their English studies and have covered literature that spans all genres. I have also focused on helping my students to strengthen their skills in comprehension, Writing, Analysis and Synthesis and have also coached them in Grammar and Editing Skills.

My great love of drama also motivated me to qualify with my LTCL in Speech and Drama through the Trinity College of London where I was awarded a distinction for my thesis and practical exam. I have coached numerous groups and individuals in Speech and Drama for both festival and exam work. I have also produced school plays and some adult performance. My great passion for drama has ensured that my students are too instilled with this passion and love of performance which has enable them them to excel.

Teaching Experience:

I have had very varied and diverse teaching experience over the last 14 years teaching thousands of students. I have worked with students from all backgrounds and abilities and enjoy the challenge of being able to watch as a student progresses and begins to find a rhythm whereby he/she can improve their skills.

I have worked across the board in a number of different subjects and my students have found that they have been able to use the skills acquired to succeed in their other subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I love teaching and am passionate about helping students to succeed not only in their academic skills but also seek to build their confidence and belief in their abilities. As a teacher, I know that this is the prerequisite for a student being able to achieve true success.

1:The process generally begins with an initial assessment which allows me to determine the most urgent areas in need of attention.
2: The student and I then usually set a list of goals we would like to achieve from the lessons.
3: Every week, we cover new ground and ensure that not only are we covering content but are sticking to our list of commitments to our learning. This helps students to stay focused and they learn to become accountable to themselves in their learning process. This has proven to help many students to become more disciplined, mature and independent in their approach to learning.
4: I will support my students in all ways so that I am confident they have what it takes to succeed.
7: Most of all, I want the lessons to be exciting, interesting and fun so that content becomes crystal clear and skills are improved dramatically.
