Personal Description:
I am 23 years old and I am in my final year at The University of Manchester where I am studying French and Italian. I have spent 6 months in Bologna in Italy, working in a private language school for those wished to learn either Italian or English. I worked as a copywriter for the school website, working in French, Italian and English. I also worked as a conversation tutor to those who wanted to learn English. I am now waiting on my results for a recognised qualification, a C1 CILS exam. In the same year, I lived in Paris for four months where I worked at ELLE, the well known women's fashion magazine, where I used solely French. I am very down to earth and my biggest passion is football, I enjoy a good movie and love a good comedy. If you feel more comfortable meeting in a neutral place, a coffee place or in the town centre that is fine by me. It is flexible. A clean criminal record and can boast a detention-less education!

Teaching Experience:

I now have teaching experience and I have shadowed those who have done this for a job. I have worked voluntarily in a school teaching beginner's Italian. Having already worked as a conversation tutor in a private school, I feel I would excel in giving private lessons, given the chance.

Tutoring Approach:

Personal Description:
I am 25 years old and have recently graduated with a First Class Honours degree in a Primary Education (with QTS - Qualified Teacher Status) from the Manchester Metropolitan University. Prior to this I spent two years studying French and Spanish at the University of Manchester, before deciding to withdraw from my course in order to focus on my main passion, education. My desire is to use up-to-date strategies observed at university and in school, as well as in current educational research, to help children improve their knowledge, understanding and skills to perform more confidently in school.

Teaching Experience:

I spent four years developing my skills as a classroom teacher during my studies, in various classroom settings at several primary schools across the north west and in the United States. My time in school has varied from KS2 settings to Early Years and the Foundation Stage, working with small groups of children, on a one-to-one basis, and leading full class sessions that were planned and assessed independently. The majority of my training took place in Year 5 classrooms, working with children aged around 9-10. I developed two areas of specialism at university: International Perspectives, and Children's Literature and Language (literacy). During the time spent in one of my schools, I was working with dyslexic children, developing reading and spelling skills on a one-to-one basis, which included the use of ICT materials.

I have also worked with children as a summer camp counsellor in the US for the past seven years, working with boys aged from 5 to 13 years old. Whilst this work is not of an educational manner, the professionalism and skills I have acquired from the role are similarly placed to those required of an educator. My duties have been eclectic, from the basic care and nurturing of the children, to the coaching of sports games, and even practising management and organisational skills in my more recent position as a Division Assistant.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst I understand that the purpose of tutoring is to enrich the learner's knowledge and improve their ability in a given subject, I believe in taking a more diagnostic approach, finding and tackling the specific problems of the individual learner. This I feel will help to boost their confidence in the subject, which will hopefully lead to better enjoyment and success in the school environment. Furthermore, addressing gaps in the student's knowledge is much more inherent to future success if discovered and filled earlier in the student's educational career. I also believe in recording evidence of progress - which certainly requires practice - and find the use of regular "quizzes" and "challenges" useful in allowing the learner to see their progress, as well as assigning independent homework tasks to maintain progress between sessions. This also allows the learner to reflect and manage a plan of action for him/herself, deciding which areas to focus on next and to set their own achievable targets and learning goals.

Teaching Experience:

As part of Churchill House, School of English Language's Summer learning scheme, I have spent two residential stints in successive summers at a Derbyshire boarding school, assisting foreign students both in and out of class. I have worked with children between the age of 11 and 18.

During my sixth form years, I was a language coach for Key Stage 3 students at my school in French and Spanish.

Tutoring Approach:

Students should think aloud and use me as a sounding board. Essays should be spoken before they are written.
I believe in structuring arguments and tackling a problem one step at a time, something often rushed through in the exam. Quality will always outweigh quantity and the student should be reminded of this. I try to contextualize any of the points I make to a student, perhaps likening it to something they are already interested in. The student should stop thinking in terms of assessment and start to consider the application of the subject in the real world - this often leads to a greater enthusiasm. Analogies and acronyms are key to remembering important facts and figures. I do honor mark schemes and they will of course form the bedrock of my teaching, but in order to truly make the student better at the subject, I feel this is something that should be transcended. A pass is not enough. An A grade is my aim for my students.

I have been working as a tutor for the past two years, and have been very proud to see my students accomplish their goals. I have previously tutored both AQA and OCR psychology A-levels, as well as GCSE English and an access to higher education diploma. Past achievements include raising a students grade from a predicted D to a B, helping a student achieve 95% in an exam as well as distinction for their coursework, and helping a student pass their functional skills English exam. I have also been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to home-school a pupil in AS-level psychology.

Before I began tutoring, I spent a year teaching weekly psychology seminars of up to twenty students while studying for my degree. During this time I helped students with essays, reports and exams by creating learning resources such as APA referencing and revision guides and report templates for them to use as resources when writing their own pieces of work. I also taught students several study skills, such as how to structure paragraphs using the 'funnel' technique, how to introduce evidence and references into an answer, and by addressing tutor feedback on past assignments. I also ran workshops on qualitative and quantitative research methods, where I would create graphs and flowcharts to help students simplify the process of analyzing data. I thoroughly enjoyed this role, and I was very proud to see so many of my students achieving 2.1's and 1st's as their final grade for the year. In the year prior to this, I was a student ambassador, where I frequently taught English to GCSE level students, as well as arranging other educational activities such as problem solving exercises.
