Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University in 2008 with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

I am a keen writer of prose, poetry and comedy and whilst at Cambridge wrote and directed the prestigious Footlights Pantomime.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring students in: 11+ preparation (all four subjects); lower secondary SEN homework and mentoring; adult EFL learners; lower secondary English; GCSE English; lower secondary maths; Key Stage 1 and 2 English and maths.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative approaches to the work, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I am particularly interested in Shakespeare, poetry, drama and Dystopian Literature (especially the works of Margaret Atwood).

In London I can reach any areas by Tube or Bus in zones 1-9. For areas outside London I will drive to you. For areas further away petrol costs may need to be covered. Please contact me for further information.

I have worked in education all my adult life, and ten years ago embarked upon a freelance career which has enabled me to focus on the kind of work I love, and to spend more time with my family, and do the things I most enjoy.

As an English graduate, my greatest passion is literature. I read a wide range of novels, drama and poetry. Authors I have recently enjoyed include Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman, Helen Dunmore, Kazuo Ishiguro... too many to mention!

I spend a lot of time writing and completed a six month course in novel writing with the Faber Academy on which I was delighted to be offered a place. I have had a number of articles and short stories published, and am working on my first novel.

Teaching Experience:

My first job was teaching English to young speakers of other languages during the summer vacations when I was at University - many years ago!

After I graduated in English I qualified as a teacher. My first full-time post was in a sixth-form college, where I taught English at a variety of levels to A-level and University entrance. After two further full-time teaching posts in a 14-19 secondary school and another sixth-form college, I moved into Adult and Community Education. During much of this time I also took on a number of part-time posts, tutoring English, English to Speakers of other Languages, Creative Writing and General Studies in a university extra-mural department, the Workers Education Association and in a number of prisons. I served on the English A-level set books committee of a national examinations board, and have worked as a part-time examiner.

For the past ten years I have been working as a freelance education consultant, trainer and writer. Much of my education consultancy and training work has involved facilitating and coaching young people and professionals in a variety of contexts and a range of subject areas such as communication skills, business writing skills and writing for the media.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer distance and online tutoring, using Skype, telephone and email. When I am working with students in this way I provide them with extensive and constructive feedback on their written work, enabling them to understand how they can improve their coursework and achieve the skills and confidence necessary to write succinct and relevant essays required for examinations. Many of the students whom I have supported have achieved top grades in GCSEs, A-levels and degrees.

I firmly believe that we only learn effectively when we find the learning experience interesting, relevant and meaningful. My first priority is to endeavour to ensure that my students are having that kind of experience! I also believe that learning should be enjoyable and fun. Sometimes, of course, learning is about studying things we are not so interested in just to get through an exam - a means to a hopefully more enjoyable end. In that case I help students to find the most effective ways for them to do just that - and hope that even this might be enjoyable too!

I do not believe that good teaching is about pouring knowledge into students, but is about drawing learning out of them and supporting them to teach themselves. We all have huge areas of strength, skill and wisdom, and I always try to enable students to recognise theirs and to develop them to their fullest potential.

11+ - I worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. Olivia is now attending North London Collegiate School (her first choice) but I also prepared her for entrance to Highgate School for Girls, City of London School for Girls and Queen's College.

Primary Help - I worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but also across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

Primary Help - I worked with Rohan (10) on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths. Rohan was very inquisitive and keen but needed help focussing and answering the specific questions that he was being asked.

A Level English Literature (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

Home Schooling - Inigo (6 when I started) had been getting reports of generally dropping behind in class work with a lack of concentration. I homeschooled him every Friday for two terms. He was having particular trouble in English and Maths. Inigo was struggling especially with English, in all areas, and was most behind with Spelling and Grammar. For him to engage, I had to be both creative (to keep him interested) but also quick as the plan was to get him into Kew Green Primary for the next academic year. We covered the basics of year 1 and ironed out any problems (also to give him confidence with the things he could do) and then went onto year 2. I would use a lot of what he was naturally interested in (football and particular comic book characters) in the teaching to keep his attention. With Maths, Inigo could do simple addition and subtraction but struggled when getting into 2 digits, multiplication, or any sort of wordy problem where the sum to be done was not absolutely clear. So, again, we covered the basics and then pushed on. He worked really hard and eventually we were looking forward to things he may encounter next year. At first Inigo was quite reluctant to work but I managed to win him over and build up a good rapport for productive days of homeschooling. Thankfully, he gained a place at Kew Green, and we were delighted! (Though it did mean, unfortunately, that he didn't need me any more...).

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. Especially with the younger students I teach I think that lessons need to be fun to keep them excited about learning! Personal Description:
I am currently studying for a funded PhD on Samuel Beckett and Theodor W. Adorno at Royal Holloway, University of London. I completed my Masters study in Literature and Philosophy in September 2012, graduating with Distinction, and received a First Class Honours BA in English from Royal Holloway in 2010. Between my Undergraduate and Masters study I worked for a year as an Editorial Assistant in the Health Sciences division of Hachette UK.

I held a choral scholarship at university and was previously a chorister at Winchester Cathedral.

Teaching Experience:

I have four years' experience in tutoring pupils of a range of ages, from 4 to 18. I am practiced in preparing students for their GCSE and Alevel examinations, working closely with the syllabus whilst extending their understanding. I am currently a Visiting Lecturer at Royal Holloway, teaching a first year Undergraduate course: 'Inventing the Novel'.

I also have four years' experience as a private Piano Tutor, in which time I have tutored adults and children of varying abilities, developing their musicality and aural skills and entering them into ABRSM examinations where appropriate.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that each student requires entirely different strategies for the optimum level of learning. It is important for them to be taught in a positive and open environment, where they are encouraged not only to develop academically, but also to enjoy the experience of learning.

The subjects that I teach are nothing if not inter-disciplinary; literature, history, philosophy, religion, music and art cannot be studied apart from one another, each in their own little cubby-hole. Whilst I recognise the need to cram for exams in our education system, I still believe that excellent grades can be achieved without compromising original thought and extra-curricular study.

I also offer proof-reading services if you do not require face to face tuition but only some help on a particular piece of work.

when teaching children on a one to one basis, I usually start by giving them a general assessment on their reading and problem solving skills. After this I am able to plan for each child on an individual basis on how to help them improve their levels and fill gaps in their learning. Due to the large number of students that i help i am not able to travel to children during the week so children come to my home for tuition but during the week ends I can to teach children in their own homes. I normally teach the children for an hour and then give them homework for further skill practice. I also help children and parents draw up a reading and learning timetable which is very easy to follow, this has proven to be very effective in the past, in helping children become independent learners. My approach is to be friendly but professional and help children relax in order to enjoy learning.

Personal Description:
I am a current teacher who believes learning must, at all times, be relevant and fun. I always spend a lot of time planning my lessons to make sure that students learn as quickly as possible, whilst at the same time making sure that they become pro-active learners. My passion is English, and I aim to pass this passion on to all of my students through lessons that are filled with fun, engaging discussion and exciting tasks.

Although I do believe in fun and engaging lessons, I also am very aware of the need to work towards the Assessment Objectives that exam boards give, of which students are ultimately measured by in their examinations. My planning, therefore, always takes into account the mixture of fun and focus on assessment objectives that is needed for both enjoyment and success.

I have deliberately not pursued a career in management in schools because I find huge enjoyment in teaching students privately. Parents often contact me because, sadly, their child is not working at their potential at their school, for whatever reason that may be. To take a student who may not be reaching their potential and transform them into a confident and successful English student is the most rewarding thing that I believe I can possibly do in my career, which is why my focus is now increasingly leaning towards private tuition.

My particular areas of expertise are English students who are either preparing for their 11+ examinations, students who need booster sessions in Key Stage 3 and students who need help in passing their GCSE examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I have held the post of Head of English at a school in Staffordshire, and I have led a team of exceptional English teachers. Having held other management positions in other schools as well, with management focus on both key Stage 3 and 4, I have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can now put to good use within the sphere of personal tuition.

I am also an experienced examiner, having marked for a leading exam body for five years now. This has helped me enormously to build up a very clear understanding of what exam boards require from students.

Last year's results saw a continuation of my fine record of exam success, where my class achieved 100% A-C in their GCSE examinations. My current year 11 class are predicted to have 5 A*'s, 10 A grades and fifteen B grades. This will be the finest set of English class results in the school's history.

Tutoring Approach:

My largest concern for my students is to make sure that their confidence is built up by becoming pro-active and independent learners. All too often tutors 'spoon-feed' their students, leading them to a false sense of security in their skills, which therefore leads to poor performance in examinations.

I also view myself as a 'English Coach', as I place a very big emphasis on ensuring that students have the right frame of mind when approaching studying English. Confidence, and belief in their own ideas, is so important for students to have, and all too often this lack of confidence is instrumental in why they are not performing as they should be.
