Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University in 2008 with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

I am a keen writer of prose, poetry and comedy and whilst at Cambridge wrote and directed the prestigious Footlights Pantomime.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring students in: 11+ preparation (all four subjects); lower secondary SEN homework and mentoring; adult EFL learners; lower secondary English; GCSE English; lower secondary maths; Key Stage 1 and 2 English and maths.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative approaches to the work, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I am particularly interested in Shakespeare, poetry, drama and Dystopian Literature (especially the works of Margaret Atwood).

In London I can reach any areas by Tube or Bus in zones 1-9. For areas outside London I will drive to you. For areas further away petrol costs may need to be covered. Please contact me for further information.

Previous Students' Comments:

'Alex is a truly outstanding and gifted tutor as well as a fantastic person. I have very much enjoyed being her student for over six months, and have not only learnt a lot due to her expertise and impressive knowledge but also grew to love English Literature because of the inspirational nature of her tutoring. Previously, I used to constantly struggle with my assignments since English is not my first language, however, after a few weeks of sessions with Alex my grades and confidence significantly improved. She has an ability to keep the lessons varied and interesting; always well prepared for lessons - she was kind enough to provide me with extremely useful books and personal notes. Her incredible dedication and hard working nature also deserves mentioning as she was willing to help me even in the evenings when I was panicking about coursework and the approaching exams. With Alex's assistance and firm confidence in my ability I have achieved a high A in my A-level English Literature and even a merit award in Extended English. I would enthusiastically recommend Alex to anyone who wants to succeed in their exams and learn heaps of interesting information.

- Natasza ' (Now studying at Oxford University)

Personal Description:
Having graduated from university with a first class degree reading English, I am passionate about books and literature. I received 79% for my dissertation, where 80% is deemed worthy of academic publication and can provide a reference from my tutor to support this. I am a focused, determined, enthusiastic and willing individual with an aim to help students and adults engage and understand literature and the issues surrounding it.

I am currently employed as an Instructional Designer, building e-learning courses for schools, businesses and individuals. Due to this, I am more than able to teach people how to use Microsoft Office products, having lead and developed an approved ECDL course, which was provided to schools and businesses. The ECDL course consists of basic training on how to use Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access, alongside Outlook and the Internet.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored a number of individuals using UK Tutors, from Primary level to Masters. In the summer of 2008, I spent nine weeks working with children and adults at a special needs camp in America. This experience was extremely rewarding and taught me the importance of patience and communication. I have recently returned from travelling where I taught at an underprivileged school in Cambodia.

Tutoring Approach:

Studying English Literature allows you to interpret a text in a number of different ways. Therefore my approach to tutoring will be tailored to the individual and their attitude and responsiveness to literature. I am patient and willing to explain things using a variety of different methods to ensure the student has a full understanding of the topic.

Personal Description:
I am 30 years old and living in the centre of Wakefield with my wife. I have an interest in sports and the environment. I studied Environmental Science with Primary School Education at Bretton Hall College and love the challenge of teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching since 2004 when I qualified. I worked for 5 years at 2 schools in Barnsley. Recently I have worked at a number of Wakefield schools, gaining experience of teaching through all year groups from Lower Foundation to Year 6. I have worked in 1 to 1 situations with children preparing for SATs exams and also run intervention groups which has given me the experience of planning effectively for children at all levels of attainment and with challenging behaviour and learning needs. I have experience of running Reading Recovery sessions which help children to catch up with reading skills if they are behind.

Tutoring Approach:

I have vast experience of tutoring both in School and in the home. I run tutoring sessions that are start by recapping the work done in previous sessions, showing the child the next step and giving them the opportunity to practice the next step for themselves. I try to make the sessions fun so that the child does not get bored in the sessions and so that they look forward to the next session.

Personal Description:
I am a 32 year old Primary School teacher, and have been living in Northampton for over 10 years. I moved here to study for my BSc Hons Psychology Degree and then to complete my PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Northampton. I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter and number 2 on the way!

Before going into teaching, I studied for a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate, which I then used to teach English in a school in a deprived area of the Dominican Republic for four months. This was an amazing opportunity which, amongst other things, also gave me the chance to develop my Spanish skills.

I am warm, patient and kind and absolutely love my job as a teacher! I strive to get the best out of the children I work with; I enjoy getting to know them as individuals and helping them to achieve their full potential.

I am currently on maternity leave and available to tutor weekday afternoons, evenings and possibly some weekends. I will endeavour to arrange my childcare around your preferred times.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught across Key Stage 1 and 2 and have a sound knowledge of the curriculum. My creativity has led me to solely organise many whole school events, including Business and Enterprise Celebration Days, European Day of Languages, Spanish Day and an America Day (around the 2009 Election). Each of these events involved meticulous planning and co-ordination of events throughout the whole school.

In the past few years, I have delivered Maths training to Newly Qualified Teachers from schools across the county. I have also spoken at the annual Languages Subject Leaders Conference in Northampton and was invited to present to the PGCE graduates at The University of Northampton about the realities of the first year in teaching.

I have worked with many special needs children and have also tutored children on a one-to-one basis within my own school. My lessons have often been graded as 'outstanding' by Ofsted inspectors and senior school leadership.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate about being creative in my tutoring and believe that children learn best when they are happy, feel secure and confident in their abilities; are stimulated in a way that suits their interests and feel a real sense of achievement in themselves.

I aim to make my lessons as interactive and fun as possible, using many types of visual aids and stimuli to suit the learning style of the pupil. Children's learning is such a precious process and I am keen to spark their enthusiasm in as many ways as possible.

Following an initial and very informal assessment to identify targets I would then plan the work accordingly to suit the child's individual needs, interests and learning style.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified teacher with 7 years' experience teaching at Key Stages 1 and 2 and have been tutoring for the past 2 years. As a current teacher, I am very familiar with current assessment requirements across primary level and have 2 years' experience of tutoring year 6 pupils in mathematics through the government-funded one-to-one tuition scheme.

I have successfully tutored children aged 4-11 in both English and Maths.

In addition to my primary teaching experience, I have a 2.1 degree in German Studies from the University of Warwick and can confidently teach this subject to A-level if required. I have successfully tutored GCSE and A-level students in German, boosting grades by an average of 2 levels (ie. from a C to an A).

Teaching Experience:

Current Year 2 teacher at local primary.
3 years' experience of teaching in upper-Key Stage 2.
2 years' experience of personal tuition (Mathematics - year 6)
Postgraduate Certificate in Education: 2007
TEFL experience - Germany 2004-5

Tutoring Approach:

I like to take a little time to get to know my students and assess their strengths and weaknesses. I encourage the child to identify his or her own areas they think they need to work on.

After an initial introduction, the tuition process is intensive, with plenty of practice and guidance! I am confident in using ICT, where necessary, to illustrate key concepts.

Generally, I have found that an hour per week is sufficient to improve a child's confidence and ability. However, if you feel your child would benefit from more hours' tuition per week, I will be happy to accommodate them.

Personal Description:
I am 45 years old, and have a young family with one child, currently in Year 6. My wife is a headteacher locally. I have taught in a number of different school systems, including Primary, Junior, Middle and Secondary schools.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 20 years, teaching from Years 2 to Year 7 covering all Primary subjects, specialising in Leading both Literacy and Maths. I also have extensive experience teaching English as a foreign language, to foreign students.
For the last 7 years I have taught in year 6 and year 5, so have a lot of SATS preparation experience, in English and Maths. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility, from class teacher to Deputy headteacher. Currently I teach a year 6 class, as Senior teacher, and part of the senior management team, in a Primary school in Redhill. One of my current role involves working with colleagues to develop their practice in the class room.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe every percieved problem in a child's learning has a solution. The important thing is that every child is an individual, and therefore learns in different ways. This requires different teaching approaches to be used, depending on the situation. Flexibility is an important skill in a teacher, being able to adapt to whatever the needs of the child are.

Personal Description:
I am currently on a break from full-time teaching, during which I am writing a text book, trying to complete a long-standing PhD project, tutoring PGCE students for the University of Buckingham and offering my services as a freelance tutor, consultant and guest speaker. During term time I live in Surrey with my wife and young son, and we spend holidays and weekends in Suffolk.

Teaching Experience:

I have fifteen years' experience as an English teacher, in three different schools, at the last of which I was Head of Department. I have taught GCSE English Language and Literature very successfully and have also overseen excellent results in A Level English Literature. I am a current examiner of GCSE English Language and moderator of AS coursework. I have previously marked various other GCSE and A Level examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I hope to use my extensive experience as a teacher and examiner to provide students with the clearest and most helpful guidance possible. I like to think I am well-placed to help those simply striving for a C grade as well as those aiming for an A or A*. English is about practice, so I get my students writing and I provide detailed feedback and advice on what they produce.

Testimonial:

'English is the most important school subject bar none (as it inevitably leads the way into every other subject). If your experience has been that some teachers seem to find English troublesome to teach properly and if you want to see better progress, Rory is the best qualified, most experienced tutor that you will find. It is impossible to overstate his skills as a teacher - he is at the very top end of the scale. It has been a great pleasure to watch our son grow in confidence and ability under Rory's tutelage.'

Personal Description:
Arts enthusiast with incisive critical engagement skills. Able to draw from a very wide range of critical theories when analysing arts and performance related texts. A big fan of film, theatre, music, comics, football and comedy.

Teaching Experience:

I graduated from Royal Holloway in 2011 with the highest degree grade of the academic year. I was approached by many of my co-students to advise them on essays and creative work and was employed by the Drama department to run workshops for prospective students. I've since worked as a freelance drama practitioner having led workshops with a wide spectrum of people from 10 to 70 years old.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to spread a love and enthusiasm for arts and humanities subjects and how they are good for personal as well as academic development. I can find ways to relate the work to the students own experiences. I'm a good problem solver, I'm able to pinpoint areas that need attention, particularly in essay and presentation work. I'm a natural entertainer but always maintain focus on the task at hand.

Personal Description:
My Profile:

Graduated from Leeds University in Genetics and have a deep passion for science. After leaving University, I have worked in the Computing and IT industry to Project Manager level, mainly for large blue chip financial companies such as General Accident (now Aviva), Standard Life, Bank of Scotland, GE Corporate and others. In 2004 I decided to return to my original love of science and gained a PGCE teaching qualification to teach science.

It is my aim to transfer my passion and love for science to my students as well as an understanding of the subject in order to enable them to AIM HIGHER and ace their exams.

Building on my science qualification, I gained a PGCE teaching qualification from Huddersfield University to become a qualified teacher of science in 2005. Following the successful completion of the PGCE, I rapidly achieved the position of Programme Manager and gained extensive experience of teaching Biology, Chemistry, Physics, BTEC Applied Sciences (Medical Science, Forensic Science, Health and Social Care), Access to Nursing, Access for Medical Professionals and Foundation Degree (Biology). The teaching experience has been in schools, Sixth Form Colleges and Further Education Colleges in Warrington, Leeds and Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

I have been providing select 1 to 1 private tuition in all areas including English, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Media Studies and Physics.

I am able to tutor from primary, secondary (including entrance exams) through GCSE, A Levels, BTEC (Level 2 and Level 3) and Adult Foundation Degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. To do that, as tutor, I will facilitate their learning on a 1 to 1 basis so that they may gain a deeper and greater depth of knowledge of the subject. I will provide the subject knowledge expertise and transfer my knowledge to the tutee in a manner and at a level that is appropriate to the tutee but pushing them beyond their limits to the next stage. To achieve that grade "A*" a GCSE tutee should be able to understand basic AS Level material. For an A Level tutee to achieve the highest grades at A Level they should be able to cope with University first year material with ease. It is my aim to enable my tutees to achieve these goals.

I will work to improve the child's self esteem, self belief and confidence in their ability to do well. As a trained hypnotherapist I am particularly qualified to boost a child's self-esteem. Once the tutee is confident in their subject knowledge, then we will work on exam techniques and exam practice in order to enable the tutee to ace the exams and significantly improve their grades.

I will work with each tutee on an individual basis and adjust the tuition lessons to their needs. There is no standard one size fits all model with me. Homework will be set to enable the subject matter to be reinforced with some self-learning at home. Exam practice will be key to enable the tutee to become proficient in their exams and achieve the highest grades. Exam technique contributes significantly towards exam success. We will always work to enable the tutee to AIM HIGHER.

I am also able to guide sixth formers with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

At all times parents will be involved with the learning of their child so that they may guide and support their child's education and monitor progress. Parental involvement is also a major factor in the child's success.

For the science lessons my aim is to include as much practical work as is possible, where this is feasible in a tuition setting, keeping safety of the child of paramount importance.

If your child is quiet and shy or is in a mediocre class or is just coasting along or is struggling to achieve the grades required to get into the University course of their choice, whether it is Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Engineering, Computing, Optometry or other science course, then tuition with myself will enable them to boost their grades and give them the advantage that they need. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. A good tutor will help guide tutees who want to learn to get ahead and avoid becoming disinterested or bored. Why leave it to chance?

It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. A tuition boost will enable them to get into a better school or a higher stream set so that they do not have to struggle or get left behind when the come to do their GCSE and A Levels.

I also have experience of vocational courses such as the BTEC and Applied Science courses and I am able to provide the additional guidance and support required to ensure that your child achieves Distinctions rather than passes in their assignments. It is not my policy to do the tutee's coursework for them but to help, guide and support their research and provide constructive feedback.

Tutees will be required to complete all assessments and homework on time in advance of the relevant lesson.

Personal Description:
Postgraduate Student.

I am a twenty-one year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and understand the tricky bits of their material which is escaping their understanding. I am a Canadian studying abroad here in Glasgow and therefore do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have the equivalent levels from Canadian institutions with top marks. I tutor best in history, my chosen subject, English or French as a second language, and maths, which I not only did well in during secondary school, but all of which I have also studied at the University level. I get along very well with students of all ages and try to make the tutoring experience a fun an interesting one for any student.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring 1 on 1
ESL teaching (Group sizes from 5-12)
Age range of experience: 7-18 year olds

I have several years of teaching experience in different settings and with different age groups. I've taught English as a Second Language in a camp setting which ran lessons similar to classroom lessons every morning. I had to design my own approaches to various topics which gave me a lot of practice in making studying and learning interesting and easier for children who were less interested or struggling. I also tutored on a private basis for primary school-aged children through the medium of French and English in reading and writing skills as well as the general subjects at that age. I have tutored at the secondary school level in Maths, English, French, Sciences, and History. I have also been a teaching assistant at the University level for both Irish and Scottish Gaelic second language courses as well as a general Celtic World knowledge course.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning should be fun.
Aim is to help student learn how they understand instruction so that they are more confident in their own abilities and can perform better in the future.
Use past work to improve on future work.

Learning should be fun and I strive to make the tutoring experience less about school work and more about understanding the ways in which what is being taught is of interest to the student. Finding ways to improve the student's understanding and learning experience sometimes means approaching the material in a different way than is being taught in class. Teachers understand that not all student learn the same way but cannot always deliver their teaching in all these ways. By helping the student understand the material first and then explaining the method the teacher used to explain it first allows the student to reach their full potential, understand the material, and go back to class with a better chance following the teacher's instruction.

All of this is done in a light-mannered way that does not make the child feel as though tutoring is a punishment for not understanding in class, but rather, a (sometimes lengthy) temporary situation until the student becomes more confident about his or her own skills!

Using the student's own work is an important tool for helping them recognize their own areas of difficulty and should be used again as mock exams to help the student see tangible proof of their improvements. The best understanding of any subject comes from watching it being done/having it explained, doing it oneself, and then teaching it in turn.

Personal Description:
I am a relaxed and easy-going person but very enthusiastic about my subjects: Drama, English and R.E. I have a Master's Degree in Drama education from Warwick University and am now a professional actor. My Bachelor's degree is in Drama and Theology from Surrey University.

I can teach all levels in these subjects but specialise in teaching over-18s

If you live in West/Southwest/Central London then I am happy to travel to tutor at your home. I am willing to consider travelling further if required.

Teaching Experience:

Since 1990 I have been teaching English, Drama and R.E to a wide range of age groups from 7 to 18, with excellent results in public examinations. I have also tutored adults in these subjects at GCSE and A Level, and for university/O.U./higher education assignments.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very aware that an adult's educational needs differ from those of the child's, and my approach is directed towards making the adult learner and the university student comfortable in the learning environment. Whether providing in-depth teaching from the basics onwards, or support for existing course assignments and projects I provide sensitive and thorough support. There are no prejudices or expectations about what a student should know, and each person is valued whatever their knowledge, level or ability.

Personal Description:
I have lived in Lancaster for almost 14 years. I came to University in this city and never left. I live with my husband and two crazy kittens. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, stitching, science fiction and fantasy movies and tv shows and keeping fit (I work out and swim twice a week).
I have a BA in English (2:1) and an Masters in Literary Studies. However, I get the most satisfaction out of teaching maths.

Teaching Experience:

Qualified with PGCE in Secondary English, Qualified Teacher Status awarded 2007
Qualified Teaching and Learning Skills (QTLS) awarded 2013

Last OFSTED grade: Graded Good (2) with elements of Outstanding (1) practice

2010 - 2011
Worked on an army training preparation course teaching English functional skills to troubled and disadvantaged teenagers who were aiming to join the armed forces.

2011 - 2012
Taught maths and English basic skills qualifications to adults in various work places

2012 - present
I work full time as a tutor for adults, teaching the maths and English functional skills aspects of adult apprenticeships in Health and Social Care.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to work one to one, focusing on building up confidence and security. I have worked with some very nervous learners and some who have had negative teaching experiences in the past.
I use minimal ICT, I prefer the old fashioned methods of paper and pencil. I design most of my own resources, based on the functional skills idea that maths and English should be relevant to the person who is learning'.

I strongly believe that there is no such thing as 'bad at maths'. The people I have tutored have not previously been taught in a way that works for them.

Many of my learners have gone on to higher education, have started their own businesses and have passed competency tests in maths for EYPS, Teacher Training and Nursing Degree courses.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying History at Cambridge University and live in southwest London. I love playing and watching sport, particularly rugby and football, and spent a year after school teaching both sports (as well as some academic subjects) at a school called Dilworth in New Zealand. I really enjoy teaching and particularly the one-on-one focus that tutoring allows!

Teaching Experience:

As well as the year spent in New Zealand teaching rugby, football, Maths and History to 11-13 year olds, I have considerable other experience. I have worked for a combined total of 5 weeks for Lanterna, a company which offers revision courses for students aged 17-18 studying the IB, where I have taught History, Maths and Environmental Systems. In addition I have done a lot of private tuition in groups of one or two, both for Lanterna and privately. So I have experience teaching a variety of subjects to students of different ages and backgrounds.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is essential to create a relaxed environment in which the tutee feels comfortable to admit that they might not follow an explanation. To this end, combining teaching with occasional breaks is actually conducive to better learning. In addition, I favour a tutoring style which is more of a dialogue than a lecture, in which a tutee contributes his/her own knowledge or understanding of a topic.
