Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University in 2008 with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

I am a keen writer of prose, poetry and comedy and whilst at Cambridge wrote and directed the prestigious Footlights Pantomime.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring students in: 11+ preparation (all four subjects); lower secondary SEN homework and mentoring; adult EFL learners; lower secondary English; GCSE English; lower secondary maths; Key Stage 1 and 2 English and maths.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative approaches to the work, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I am particularly interested in Shakespeare, poetry, drama and Dystopian Literature (especially the works of Margaret Atwood).

In London I can reach any areas by Tube or Bus in zones 1-9. For areas outside London I will drive to you. For areas further away petrol costs may need to be covered. Please contact me for further information.

Teaching Experience:

My PGCE year showed me different ways to teach children and emphasised being flexible and adaptable to the individual needs to every child. I incorporate this into my teaching practice on a daily basis and have managed to get it down to an art for tuition too.

During my final year at university, I decided to take on the role of note taker/tutor to a visually impaired first year PPE student. This helped me to fully appreciate the art of communication because I had to learn new techniques to implement when typing up mathematical notation and complicated economic expressions. This aided my organisational and time keeping skills as I had to complete my final year studies simultaneously. I undertook this role so that I could enhance my listening and communication skills. But I finished this role having understood the intricacies of teaching Mathematics to someone who has difficulty due to a disability. I was a successful tutor and my work was valued highly but my greatest achievement within this role was ensuring that the student understood what I taught. Carrying out this enriching role meant I saw the student decipher the complex and challenging mathematics and this confirmed teaching as a career choice.

I decided to use the summer of 2010 fulfilling one of my dreams by working with vulnerable children from underprivileged backgrounds in one of the world's fastest developing nations: India. I taught Mathematics and English to Secondary School students using my Hindi language skills to communicate and ensure that the children understood everything that I was trying to convey. I fulfilled this voluntary role for a period of 3 months and it gave me a very deep insight into what a career in teaching would be like. I travelled 18km on a daily basis but I was happy to give up my time during the week and on the weekend in order to teach or invigilate exams. I was committed to sharing my knowledge and giving the best of myself. This experience showed me that it is important to keep thinking and learning new things in order to be a successful teacher. I created teaching plans before each lesson and took advice from the Head Master and my colleagues which meant that I was able to develop at a rapid pace. I recognise that I still have much to learn but I am ready for the next challenge which awaits me. This experience was heart rendering and left me feeling fulfilled in a way I have never felt before.

I have taught over 30 pupils over the last few years. This has ranged from several A level pupils, several GCSE pupils and a handful of primary school pupils. I have also taught university students in Economics. I have taught both male and female students from varying ages. Pupils tend to find that they gel with me quite well compared to previous tutors they've had.

My students notice a difference in their progress within a very short amount of time because I genuinely care about helping them to get the most out of their potential. One of my languages' students has seen a rapid increase in a matter of weeks in terms of her spoken and written work. All of my Economics' students have seen particularly quick progression in terms of analytical and evaluation skills.

I am a hard working and conscientious tutor - I take my work very seriously and I am committed to helping students perform exceptionally well. The feeling I get from seeing a student finally understand a concept is the greatest feeling in the world. However, I don't take myself too seriously and am very easy to get on with.

Overall - I can help with routine homework, assignments, exam preparation, more focused revision, improving memory and making subjects fun and relatable!

Tutoring Approach:

I plan things and I like to identify a student's weaknesses so that I can help them to kick the demons and enjoy a subject in a way they never have done before. I think making the base of any subject strong is essential and means that a student can develop quicker. I also know that it's important not to overload students with too much information so I make things manageable and progress tends to be very fast :)

I am 20 years old, fresh from university and have a exceptional passion for English literature and language. My degree was in creative writing and I am an aspiring author however what I really want to do with my life is teach. I find there is no greater satisfaction than helping children to succeed and giving them a flair for something they perhaps previously disliked or struggled with. I have already worked in schools teaching classes between year 7 and 11 and have currently just been taken on as an unqualified teacher as I work towards my GTP. I work 5 days a week but do not teach all day, just regular classes with mainly year 11 students. I am a crucial part of the staff at this school, in fact my position started on only a voluntary basis, within two weeks I had been asked to take on a paid position full time. At this school I have already single handily upped the grades of individual students who were struggling, this being because of, I believe, my clear passion for the subject.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching has always been to engage the learner by making learning fun and interesting but at the same time packed with incredibly important information. Tutoring Approach:

In my long experience of tutoring I have seen the benefits in aptitude and confidence that pupils can gain from one-to-one tuition. In the unique one-to-one situation the teacher can inspire pupils to begin at last to see the relevance of subjects they find difficult to grasp in a high-pressure environment like school.

Once the pupil sees the need to master the subject I take them on to the next stage where they can undertake tasks which build up their confidence. It is also a means for me to ascertain what the pupil's strengths are and to build on them.

The next stage is the slightly more painful one of identifying weaknesses and gauging the pupil's awareness of them and motivation to put them right. Once the student and I have agreed which areas need improvement we use lesson time to extend competence and skills by undertaking thinking and written assignments that allow the student to develop these.

Any homework set will advance and reinforce the skills the pupil has been encouraged to bring to the lesson.

As part of Churchill House, School of English Language's Summer learning scheme, I have spent two residential stints in successive summers at a Derbyshire boarding school, assisting foreign students both in and out of class. I have worked with children between the age of 11 and 18.

During my sixth form years, I was a language coach for Key Stage 3 students at my school in French and Spanish.

Tutoring Approach:

Students should think aloud and use me as a sounding board. Essays should be spoken before they are written.
I believe in structuring arguments and tackling a problem one step at a time, something often rushed through in the exam. Quality will always outweigh quantity and the student should be reminded of this. I try to contextualize any of the points I make to a student, perhaps likening it to something they are already interested in. The student should stop thinking in terms of assessment and start to consider the application of the subject in the real world - this often leads to a greater enthusiasm. Analogies and acronyms are key to remembering important facts and figures. I do honor mark schemes and they will of course form the bedrock of my teaching, but in order to truly make the student better at the subject, I feel this is something that should be transcended. A pass is not enough. An A grade is my aim for my students.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is extremely friendly and light-hearted. Although the tuition, and quality of the teaching itself is extremely significant, the student's comfort is of equal importance, because their approach to their tuition lessons is what, primarily, will affect their overall performance.

I am relatively young amongst the market for tutors, turning seventeen only in October. I think this enables a mutual and less threatening or 'scary' relationship between my students and I, which is important for the development of your child's intelligence.
