Hello,
I have just completed my PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA. I also have an MA (Distinction) in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway, and a First Class Honours Degree in English Literature. I gained straight Firsts in every module I studied. I also have a good Fine Art degree from Chelsea College of Art and Design. I have been a private tutor for twelve years, and have taught many children in that time.

I'm a 40 year old lady, and am an aunt, godmother and childminder to several children.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at undergraduate level at university as well as writing skills in an academic skills centre. I have also taught SATs to thirteen year olds. I have a PTTLs degree level 4 qualification and teach on an Access Course to adult learners. I have been a private tutor for ten years, and have taught many children in that time. For GCSE, I have a 75 per cent success rate of my students achieving As and A*s. My other students, whose first language may not be English, achieve Bs.

I have taught AQA, OCR and EDEXCEL syllabuses at GCSE and AQA at A-Level.

Please note that I do not teach any Eleven-Plus or verbal reasoning syllabuses and that I prefer to teach older children (13 plus)

Tutoring Approach:

I use creative writing exercises with my students to allow them to develop their writing skills, as well as their creativity and imagination. This approach has been very successful with my SATs pupils. I also use past exam papers, model essays, and devote time and attention to close reading of set texts at GCSE and A-Level. I have also recently branched out into giving art lessons and I help out at an arts and crafts club at the local school.

I can also provide Skype lessons and find this has been successful with older and university level students.

I have a friendly, professional approach and find I develop a real rapport with my pupils, who find their results and confidence improving with my tutelage.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher of English with many years of study, research and training in some of the world's top universities. My qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in English Literature and the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in English, including Media Studies and Drama. My Initial Teacher Training covered all aspects of English and all abilities in the 11-18 age range. My interests, of benefit to many students especially at university level, include Critical Theory, Classical Literature, and African Literature. I have guided many students doing research and proof-read their dissertations. I have also taken the official training for one-to-one tutors rolled out by the government to complement classroom teaching. I also have experience as a GCSE English examiner for Edexcel and gained the status of Senior Examiner serving as Team Leader from the June 2013 exam series.

Teaching Experience:

My first teaching appointment came in 1988 in Cameroon where I taught English and African Literature, becoming an 'A' Level examiner for the Cameroon GCE examination board in 1990. I later took the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) leading to the PGCE, finishing my last year as Education Student of the Year in my university and receiving a national commendation for the quality of my work. I have since taught in different schools in Kent and Medway, preparing students for exams such as Functional Skills, IELTS, GCSE, 'A' Level, IB and AEA. I have also given one-to-one tuition to looked-after teenagers under a government scheme as well as taught in a secure unit for which, in addition to enhanced disclosure CRBs, I was vetted over a six month period. My first long-term (over 3 months) supply position involved teaching GCSE English, 'A' Level English Literature, and the IB. Most of my teaching has been in selective (grammar) schools. I have also given English lessons in my local community as part of an outreach programme organised for speakers of other languages by my church where I teach Bible Studies also.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to establish the needs of the students and carefully review all available assessment records. If the student is preparing for a special exam such as the GCSE, I would start by ensuring that the student is aware of the full requirements of the exam and establish a clear plan to cover these. Alongside any such programme, I believe strongly in incorporating the fundamentals of English grammar which are sometimes overlooked in formal teaching settings. I like to build a good rapport with the student so that they are comfortable revealing possible areas of weakness that we could turn into strengths.

I am a super-tutor, with a 1st Class Masters from Cambridge University. I am excellent with children and love to help others learn.

I went straight from university into drama school, and now work as a tutor and a professional actress. I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have helped children get into some of the best schools in the country, as well as aiding older children in getting the A*s they want at GCSE and A-level.

Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

I have now been tutoring ages 7-18 for 4 years, and have had brilliant feedback from my various jobs:

Tutoring Approach:

I am a confidence-buildling tutor.

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.



Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

Teaching Experience:

To date, I have been tutoring part-time, however I would now like to move into it on a fuller basis. I also have experience of teaching English to people for whom it is not a first language, and I can draw on this where some GSCE students may not always have lived in the UK.

Tutoring Approach:

I am extremely patient and understanding of the pressures facing many young people at this point in their academic life. My strengths include helping with foreign language learning and any subject which requires quality written English such as Literature, History, and English as a foreign language. I am a qualified English teacher. I am currently working as a tutor within schools, supply teacher and privately teaching English. I have been teaching for over ten years, eight years as a full time teacher and two years as a Tutor/Supply Teacher. I hold a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE English and a 2:1 BA (Honours) degree in English. I hold current CRB/police check and I am eligible to work in the UK.

I aim to support each individual in achieving his or her full potential, and have received regular feedback that I have an approachable style which empowers students and puts them at their ease. I have been a specialist in English Language skills, particularly English for Academic Purposes, for a number of years, via Skype, email and face to face tuition. I play violin and sing regularly, and have been an orchestral and chamber musician for thirty five years.

I have supported various students in their preparation for GCSEs in all three sciences, together with A levels in English and Psychology. In addition, I provide support for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Linguistics, but more generally in academic writing at degree level for all subjects.

In addition to my degree/masters subjects and my PGCE, I also have Level 3 (A level equivalent) Diplomas in Psychology and General Science, together with Level 4 in Advanced Anatomy and Physiology and Level 5 in CBT.

Teaching Experience:

I have thirty years' experience as a qualified teacher, of which I spent 15 years in leadership positions in schools, including two head ships in England and Scotland. I teach English for Academic Purposes to both overseas and home students, support preparation for public exams in Music, English, Science and Psychology and have a range of violin and singing pupils. In addition, I prepare students for IELTs, PTEG/PTE Academic, for which I am an examiner, and FCE/CPE.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to tailor my approach to meet the needs of each individual student. Lessons are a mixture of interactive and instructional, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions in a stress- free environment. I use electronic resources to support my teaching and will mark and instruct via online instructional methods where required to do so.

Personal Description:
I began at the University of Virginia in 2014 and have now returned home to England for the summer! I WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM THE BEGINNING OF JULY TO THE 19TH OF AUGUST. I completed my A levels in 2013 and am currently studying towards a double major in Foreign Affairs and Psychology. I'm a fun, hard working and energetic character whose always had a passion for working with children.

Because I`ve recently finished school I am very familiar with how the exam system runs, and know where the 'crunch' times will occur. As I am at university in America currently, I have completed the SATs multiple times so can help teach time management as I myself had to struggle to stay on top of 13 applications and extra essays!

I want to help kids create effective and fun ways to revise so that they can overcome the stress of everyday work loads and exams.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many different children on a weekly basis since 2013. Their ages range from 8-14 and at the moment I teach French, maths, English and verbal skills. I've been able to see a huge improvement with the kids that I worked with and I love getting to know each of them and build a relationship of trust and fun!

I have worked with children with disabilities for 4 years now, including those with autism and other mental challenges, to those with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Working with children will not be difficult for me as I have also casually tutored friends on areas of work they found particularly hard, as well as helped them create work plans so they could stay on top of their studies. In addition, I have been selected to be an academic advisor to students entering their first years of university.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important part of being a tutor is helping the child find an effective strategy to deal with their work load. Whether that means using flash cards, creating mnemonics or testing, I want to make the process as fun as possible. In addition, I think helping anyone with their general work load will mean aiding them in creating usable structures and easy step plans so a 5 page essay can be managed in small bitesize sections. Learning time management is also equally important, so I would emphasise this too in my teaching.

I like to keep the lessons as fun and interesting as possible. Of course, work still needs to be done, but I don't like being forceful or strict. I want a child to be able to see me as someone to look up to and look forward to our lessons, rather than dread them!

Extra work is up to the child/parents, I'm happy to set prep so long as it isn't getting in the way of the child's other studies.

I am a 22-year old student and have just completed my BA English degree, gaining an Upper Second Class honours. My degree course focused on a balanced variety of both English Literature and Language, and also covered the entire spectrum of English literature from Beowulf to Zadie Smith. So far I have worked with seven tutees aged between 5-19, tackling a wide range of issues.

Throughout my second year at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, I tutored a lower-sixth student in English twice a week. This involved hour-long study sessions focusing on my tutee's desire to develop her analytical skills and exam preparation.

During my first year at the University of Leicester I engaged in a 6-week volunteer scheme named Creative Writing in Primary Schools. Our role was to develop their knowledge of Creative Writing and to engage them in learning activities that would see them produce their own short stories. I began tutoring in Latin and English Literature five years ago, both for beginners and up to GCSE. I currently have a tutee learning beginner's Latin. While at university I tutored other students in beginner's Latin and Classical Civilisation. I've also spent the past few years providing training for adults in the workplace, so I'm happy to tutor adult learners (both beginners and experienced) as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer tutoring using practical methods - such as discussions and games - rather than just learning by rote. However, I adapt my tutor style based on what the tutee requires. I've been trained in a variety of methods to engage young and adult learners, and will try out several to see what suits the tutee best. For more experienced learners, such as A-Level / Advanced Higher candidates, I will identify which areas of the subject (vocabulary, grammar, literature) need most tuition, and decide with the tutee which to focus upon. Personal Description:
Hi! I just finished my Master's degree in Migration Studies at Oxford University and I'm currently job-seeking in London - mainly in media, communications and policy research jobs. I'm a 24 year old woman and originally from Newcastle upon Tyne. I have A Levels in French, Maths, English Literature, History, all at A grade (taken the year before they introduced the A* system :) ) and achieved 8 A*s at GCSE including 1 at A and 3 at B, so 12 altogether. I have first class BA Hons from University College London in International Relations and French. I speak French to an advanced standard and spent a year at university in Lyon France and in the past 5 years I have also lived in Montreal, Berlin and Oxford. I play the piano to Grade 8 standard and am currently teaching myself the ukulele and the accordion. I enjoy contemporary dance, spicy cooking and my favourite band is Arcade Fire.

Teaching Experience:

I have three years' tutoring experience with two families. I taught Aleena Maths and some English throughout her time in year 7. The following year I was living in France and taught Candice, who was 15 years old at the time, English language and conversation - and she made great improvements in her tests at school. After that I returned to London and was invited to teach Maths to Aleena again, who was by then in year 9. I also tutored her in French and her debate class.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to meet the tutee and if appropriate the parent, and in the past when I have taught maths we have agreed on an appropriate book to purchase, which I use as a guide for our lessons. I find an hour to an hour and a half is appropriate for secondary school level tutees, and I split the class up into different activities and subjects - depending on what the tutee needs or wishes to do that day. We will either work through a chapter of a book or concentrate on a specific piece of homework. I have not used structured lesson plans in the past but would be willing to implement this if the tutee or parent preferred.
