Personal Description:
I'm an experienced tutor and a Cambridge University English graduate. I give students the confidence to write well, excel at exams and make intelligent, original arguments with exciting, engaging and highly rigorous lessons.

I graduated from Christ's College, Cambridge University in 2010, with a 2:1 BA in English. before that I studied at the school of St. Helen and St. Katherine in Abingdon. I definitely still vividly remember what the whole (awful) process of GCSE and A-Level was like, and really understand with the exam techniques necessary to get through with a good grade. I understand how overwhelming it can feel, and the frustration of having to understand not only the subject itself but the correct way to answer. I was lucky enough to have teachers who always made this very clear to me, and the results speak for themselves.

Teaching Experience:

I've been tutoring since secondary school, when my peers would come to me for help with their work and for accessible explanations of the more complex ideas we were looking at. Since leaving school, I've tutored students of all ages, requirements and capabilities - focused mainly on GCSE, AS and A-level preparation all the way through to University Masters - in the areas of English, History, RS, and any other essay-based subject such as Sociology, Classics, Psychology, Business Studies and Geography.

I am particularly specialised in:
- students struggling with severe self-esteem and confidence issues
- students who need that special something to stand out at interview
- students who struggle to get their ideas down on paper and need some fail-safe techniques for constructing essays and arguments under pressure.

I have experience with learning difficulties, especially dyslexia, which I have helped my brother to cope with through his studies for the last few years. To me, it just means having to find another way to approach the information and make it accessible.

Though I'm not formally qualified as TEFL teacher, I've had several foreign students who needed to learn both formal and conversational English from a very basic level of understanding.

I also work with professionals who have writing requirements, including social workers, Lawyers and psychologists.

A couple of recent students include:
Imogen, 22: 3rd year English student at Edinburgh university. We've been working together for the last two years to help her overcome her panic attacks/anxiety over exams, and rebuild her confidence by improving her critical reading and essay technique, and reconnect her with her love of literature. After working together for 12 months, she was able to sit her 2nd year exams and is now completing her final year.

Helen, 18: Helen needed to raise her English A-Level grade from a predicted C to an A to fulfil her dream of studying at Oxford. She was sitting the challenging Cambridge English paper, which requires a much more rigorous style of working; we worked together intensively to develop her coursework, dramatically strengthen her writing skills, and study her texts from interesting new perspectives to create strong and original arguments. After our work together, she achieved an A and won her place at Oxford.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based on two things: helping students cut to the heart of complex arguments and make them their own - and rediscovering the pleasure of learning.

I believe that everyone can understand an idea once it's made accessible to them - there's always a way, you've just got to find out what's right for each student. I always spend time to getting to know my students and understanding what makes them tick so we can work in the best possible way for them. The best results come when good exam technique is combined with a thorough understanding of the subject - I make sure that we spend time on both. Most of the time students have never had intensive help with their essay technique; I go through essays with students line by line so that they have absolute clarity on how they can improve. Variety is important - discussion is a great way to understand themes and build their arguments - it's about getting students interested in what they're studying again by putting them back in touch with the bigger picture - why it's important, what's fascinating about it, how it's still relevant today -, and then giving them the tools and the confidence to build strong answers, underpinned by writing exercises, essay/planning practice, and more visual aids like mind-mapping. Together, all these things should create a solid base of knowledge, good results and confident students.

I offer face to face tutoring, language skills, Skype sessions, and editing/help with any essay or piece of extended written work, either face to face or via email.

Personal Description:
I am a language specialist who combines extensive experience with expertise in planning and teaching modern language courses. All tuition is personalised and learning material is carefully selected in order to produce a course which suits the individual's level, learning aims and learning style. I use a wide range of material and approach which enables rapid learning as well as giving variety and interest.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a freelance language tutor for the last 12 years following many years running and teaching english courses in this country and in France and Italy. I now specialise in teaching English language and French to GCSE/AS level and Italian to degree level. I provide support for the school curriculum and preparation for public exams - particularly English language GCSE, French GCSE and Italian at all levels, including IB Ab initio. I also specialise in teaching adults who require French or Italian for holiday or general interest purposes. I have been on the panel of examiners for the University of Cambridge ESOL examinations and have marked for Edexcel and OCR.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach a broad range of students and always aim to establish a good personal rapport with students and to put together an effective, enjoyable learning programme which provides exactly what is needed in terms of content, pace, learning style etc. If students are preparing for public exams, I track the requirements for the relevant exam board at the appropriate level. In general I make a point of using a wide range of up to date and specially written material in order to create effective and interesting learning programmes which enable the student to make fast progress in the target language and enjoy the learning process.

Private tuition is immensely helpful for school age students: it enables them to fill gaps in their knowledge, clarify unclear areas and enforce what they have already learned. They expand their general understanding of language and this can have a knock on effect in other subject areas - all of which considerably increases their confidence levels.

I also specialise in teaching adults who very much appreciate the 1:1 situation and the progress which they are able to make in a relatively short period of time.

Prices given are guide ones: fees reduce the longer the session/the more sessions taken. Typically a one hour session at GCSE level is charged at 28. Adults learning French or Italian currently pay 40 for a one and a half hour session. More advanced levels and sector specific language are charged extra.

I am a multilingual, legal executive and researcher with a long-standing passion in teaching, lecturing and management. I have taught at all levels from primary to the university level.

My teaching experience extends over 20 years, and is backed by professional qualifications in each field that I teach. I.e. Law, English, Arabic and Tae Kwon Do / Self Defence.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught both Arabic and English (native speaker) at various levels - up to university undergraduate level, at several London and UK-based schools as well as managing and directing an international language school in the Middle East.

I also tutor law, up to and including undergraduate level, this includes the foundation subjects: Equity and Trusts, Tort, European, Criminal, Public, Land and Contract.

Martial arts, fitness and self defence wise, I have taught Tae Kwon Do, grappling and Self Defence in clubs in London and High Wycombe.

Tutoring Approach:

I use a relaxed interactive, seminarial approach whenever practical. I am not, however, averse to IT based or traditional methods and welcome a diverse and results-oriented approach. My aim is to help you achieve your goals.

I recommend that you book for a one hour meeting / tutorial initially as further tuition can then be discussed, rather than booking for umpteen sessions!

Also, please check my location before contacting as travel distances may be a consideration!

Through these practices I have developed strong knowledge and understanding of the GCSE and A-Level curriculum, and have plenty of experience working with young people of all abilities and strengths. As a tutor I have worked on developing students in a practical and/or written capacity, for both group-work or as one-to-one, and for those re-sitting an exam (proven improvement from C - A* Grades) or preparing for the first time.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in creating a supportive, encouraging environment, where those being taught are facing new challenges in each session. It is important the relationship is open and honest, friendly and approachable to discuss and tackle different tasks and improve a level at a time to the individual's ability. I set weekly and monthly targets so that we are able to evaluate progress over a period of time.

Personal Description:
WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY:

"My son has improved from being a B student in his sciences to becoming an A/A* student."
"Richard uses very simple but effective methods..."
Shabana, Mother, UK

"He taught me a lot about English, gave me science tutoring and was a skilled teacher and friend."
Kiattisak, Student, Thailand

Teaching Experience:

I have over four years' teaching experience in both the UK and abroad. I have taught at every level, from primary up to college but my main experience is at secondary level. I have also had the pleasure of teaching in a Vietnamese monastery and at a school for Burmese refugees.

I A-levels in all three sciences and maths so I feel very confident in helping students up to GCSE level. My degree is in the field of medicine, so I can help out with biology studies up to A-level.

I have taught science in Poland. I also taught English as a foreign language in both Thailand and Vietnam. I wrote and directed a play and refurbished a theatre, which was funded by a grant which I obtained from the Thai Ministry of Education, viewed by both primary and secondary students and was received warmly by the Governor of Surin Province.

Tutoring Approach:

In science, I think it best to start by assessing what you know and finding out where you need help. Please supply me with the following details:

-The subject and level being studied e.g. GCSE chemistry
-The examination board e.g. AQA
-A list of subjects you wish to cover

For revision, I like to use mind maps, prompt cards, past papers and specification checklists but if you prefer a different approach, just let me know.

For English and English as a foreign language (ESL/TESOL), I believe that bringing the language to life with drama, media, humour, games and conversation is the best approach. I have a full working knowledge of correct grammatical usages but try to avoid grammatical terms if possible. For students requiring help with English in science, I prefer to focus on the meanings of keywords and use simplified language. I think it is important to have a knowledge of the students' mother tongue to help them avoid linguistic pitfalls. So, if you learn English with me, I will try to learn your language too.

Personal Description:
I am a 22 year old graduate from the University of Sheffield with a 2.1 degree in Psychology.I am a friendly person with a strong academic background who enjoys helping people in areas they are struggling in, and seeing them through until they are confident in themselves.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many people over the past 4 years, ranging in ages and academic ability. I am proud to say that every person I have tutored has improved by at least one grade. My greatest achievement was with my first ever tutee who came to me on an E grade, and with my help was able to get a high B in her English A level. I have alot of experience helping children pass the 11+.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to create a calm and comfortable environment for the tutee. I try to make the learning of the particular area enjoyable and try to use effective methods that were used on me as I was learning, incorporated with other ideas I have, to ensure that the tutee learns as much as possible in the time I am with them. I also make a conscious effort to get to know each tutee well, so that I can cater my skills specifically to them and their individual needs in order for them to do as well they possibly can.

Personal Description:
I am a fourth year medical student at King's College London aspiring to embark on an academic surgery career. I am particularly interested in education and whilst at university, I have been involved in various extracurricular activities including organising fundraising, academic support and community events.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught a diverse audience of students, from teaching at a volunteer run homework club for inner city children with refugee status to tutoring middle aged professionals preparing for medical school entrance examinations. This range of audience has led me to acquire some of the most important communication skills required to become an excellent tutor. I have been tutoring secondary school pupils for over 5 years now and I feel as a secondary student of the recent past myself I can pass on the techniques and methods that I know work to excel in today's system.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer in a tailored and planned approach to every student. Each student has individual needs which have to be fully understood before a plan of action can be formulated. I build a plan with my students and we work together to ensure progress through it. Regular reflection is also an important aspect of my teaching approach which helps the student realise where they need to focus.

Personal Description:
I have had three children, one of which has learning disabilities, which has given me immense experience. They have now grown up and I have embarked on a teaching career to impart my knowledge and assist others to achieve their goals. Prior to my teacher training I was in the nursing profession. My duties as a nurse were to oversee the shift and assist carers with the day to day care of the clients who are paramount. I also ensure that all the relevant paperwork was carried from updating care plans, risk assessments and other necessary information pertinent to the clients who reside there and the home. I have good communication skills which are essential in the running of a nursing environment and I am always willing to make myself available to others, whether it is, staff or clients. My teacher training course along with my placement was not dissimilar to the nursing profession, whereby it is essential to have good communication skills and a good knowledge of the relevant paperwork needed to run an efficient teaching profession.

Teaching Experience:

As I have just qualified my teaching experience relates to my teacher training. This was undertaken in a prison and I found this area of work very interesting. I was based in the hospital setting and these students were in need of encouragement, to enable them to believe in themselves. As I was not working to the National Curriculum this allowed me to be flexible with what I taught, and enabled these students to achieve their goals at their own pace. The protocol we followed still covered the necessary topics but was student led. We used the BKSB and OLASS systems, which were generic to the prison setting. I hope that all this experience will have a good basis to deliver effective tutoring from home.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very approachable and understanding of a student's needs. I am willing to listen to the student and adapt the lesson to suit the student. I feel it is essential that the lesson is informative and enables the student to gain the most from the lesson. I deliver my lessons in a relaxed style and believe that this will enable the student to achieve their optimum level.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in July, and since then I have been looking for interesting ways to spend my time whilst also raising some money for further study. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills. Last year I also co-wrote a novel which has just been published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I love to read, write fiction, and I also work as a sub-editor at an online short story magazine. My main address is in EN4, but I am also happy to tutor in Oxford.

Teaching Experience:

In October this year I successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I also had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Also between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.
