I have taught at further education colleges in and around London as well as private schools mainly in English and History for G.C.S.E. and 'A' Level students. My main strengths are in private tutoring in which I have been engaged for the past 14 years around London and more recently in Norfolk.

Tutoring Approach:

In the case of coursework for GCSE or 'A' level I am happy to have students email their work for me to check over and then have a lesson in person. With regard to working towards examinations, I prefer to use the question papers as the basis for learning as generally each exam board has a preference for the way in which questions are answered especially in the subjects I teach. English and History especially are open to interpretation I believe the need to read around the subject and offer a wider knowledge than is generally taught at schools or colleges is vital. Regular tuition is therefore preferable, so that all problems can be addressed.

Over the past six years I have privately tutored numerous children aged 6-18 in English Literature, English Language, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

For five years I have mentored students applying to Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities as part of the Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme run by Insight Education. This involved supporting students throughout the entire admissions process, including writing their personal statement, interview preparation, support with developing their analytical skills and preparation for entrance examinations.

For two years I worked as an academic tutor in an inner city comprehensive school in London. Here I tutored sixth form students in English Language, English Literature, Social Sciences, and Media Studies. A large component of this role was supporting students with essay writing skills and study skills and I am happy to support students with these skills in a general way, or in relation to a specific subject. In this role I also coordinated and ran summer school transition programmes for students moving into year seven, and tutored mathematics and English to year seven students. My English teaching experience covers working for Anglophiles Academic at their summer camps for French students in York and Skegness (twice), teaching at EAC summer schools, EFL tuition at three language schools in Poland and teaching practice in three Polish secondary schools. I have also been teaching one-to-one for the past eight years to students of all ages and various nationalities (including French, Italian, German, Korean and Polish). I have prepared four students for their A-level examinations, which they passed with flying colours. I have also taught English to children and adults of all levels and with various difficulties (e.g. dyslexia).

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning is all about attitude and motivation. Language can be taught in a variety of ways, but the key is to choose the method that is most fruitful in an individual case. Forcing a language in is ineffective and unprofessional. The focus should be on practice rather than theory, though both are necessary for the student to develop their language skills. Theory must always be supported with lots and lots of practice - be it grammar and vocabulary exercises, games, films, music, television or newspaper articles - anything that will keep the student in touch with the language system. In short, the key to success is the student's positive attitude and interest in the subject (both of which the teacher can help develop) and the continuity of exposure to a given language, which the teacher should provide, plus the practice of grammar and vocabulary.

I graduated from Birmingham University's School of Education with a PGCE (Med level) in History and Citizenship following on from my previous qualifications; Master of Arts in Global Politics and Human rights Law and Bachelor of Arts In International Relations and Law (LLB). I am currently the Head of Faculty for Humanities at a secondary school in the West Midlands. I have seven years teaching experience as well as four years experience tutoring students, including one-to-one sessions, in Politics, Law, History and English as a foreign language. I believe in cultivating a vigorous work ethic in students, which is best done through close supervision and encouragement.
