Personal Description:
I am a graduate in English, German and Politics with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

Since 2001 I have been engaged on a university research and publishing project, based in London and Cambridge, that charts the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, from Francis Bacon to James Joyce.

A significant part of my professional role involves editing and proof-reading academic texts, and I'm happy to undertake this for tutees.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and curator of exhibitions on contemporary social and political cartoons, such as 'Coping with the Relations', commissioned by the Goethe-Institut and British Council as an international touring exhibition. Amongst other publications I co-authored the book 'Deutschland und seine Nachbarn' in 2000 as a resource for political education in German schools.

I am an enthusiastic European with a keen interest in global affairs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students in English, Politics and German for many years, as well as working as a business language trainer in firms in the City and West End.

Previously I taught English, German and Politics in England (GCSE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany. I also taught English as a foreign language to trainee German teachers of English and for Academic & Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Germany, for 8 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience, appropriate pace and empathetic attention to an individual's learning needs are essential for anyone helping others to understand often complex ideas and concepts. I also believe successful learning results from both the learner's and teacher's motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject. These are principles that inform my role as a tutor.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly where if a foreign language is involved. I believe the intensity of experience such interaction provides is the next best thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the context in which it is naturally spoken. This is borne out by my own experience as a foreign-language learner.

Personal Description:
Originally from Newcastle, I am now an actor and enjoy tutoring alongside my acting work. I have worked in TV, and also in theatre, including venues such as The National Theatre and the West End. Especially with younger students, I like to keep my lessons creative and practical. I studied English and Drama at Bristol University and then went on to train at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Recently, I have been tutoring in English, Drama, 11+ Common Entrance exams and general Primary school help.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for over 6 years. Alongside my tutoring, I am currently teaching Music and Drama in schools and I run workshops with Sixth Formers on ways of analysing texts practically.

7+ - I worked with Elektra (6) preparing her for 7+ Examinations. Covering English, Maths and Reasoning focussed on entry to Notting Hill and Ealing High School.

7+ - Working with Harry on English, Maths and exam technique, focussing him for 7+ exam for Dulwich Prep School. Harry has traits of both dyslexia and dyspraxia.

7+ - I work with Jules on his English. Jules is French and has just started attending a French school, so we are working to keep his English up to scratch. Main areas of focus are: speaking, spelling, listening/understanding and grammar.

7+ - Working with Charlie mainly on English, increasing his confidence in all areas but focussing on Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, and Comprehension.

11+ - Working with Guy on English and Maths one day a week. Mainly focussed on Guy's writing and spelling. Guy is preparing for entry to Westminster and Eton Schools.

11+ - I worked with Ingrid on English and Maths in preparation for exams for Notting Hill and Ealing High School, Francis Holland and Godolphin and Latymer Schools. Ingrid went to her first choice of Notting Hill and Ealing High.

11+ - I worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. Olivia is now attending North London Collegiate School (her first choice) but I also prepared her for entrance to Highgate School for Girls, City of London School for Girls and Queen's College.

Primary Help - I worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but also across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

Primary Help - I worked with Rohan (10) on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths. Rohan was very inquisitive and keen but needed help focussing and answering the specific questions that he was being asked.

A Level English Literature (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

Home Schooling - Inigo (6 when I started) had been getting reports of generally dropping behind in class work with a lack of concentration. I homeschooled him every Friday for two terms. He was having particular trouble in English and Maths. Inigo was struggling especially with English, in all areas, and was most behind with Spelling and Grammar. For him to engage, I had to be both creative (to keep him interested) but also quick as the plan was to get him into Kew Green Primary for the next academic year. We covered the basics of year 1 and ironed out any problems (also to give him confidence with the things he could do) and then went onto year 2. I would use a lot of what he was naturally interested in (football and particular comic book characters) in the teaching to keep his attention. With Maths, Inigo could do simple addition and subtraction but struggled when getting into 2 digits, multiplication, or any sort of wordy problem where the sum to be done was not absolutely clear. So, again, we covered the basics and then pushed on. He worked really hard and eventually we were looking forward to things he may encounter next year. At first Inigo was quite reluctant to work but I managed to win him over and build up a good rapport for productive days of homeschooling. Thankfully, he gained a place at Kew Green, and we were delighted! (Though it did mean, unfortunately, that he didn't need me any more...).

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. Especially with the younger students I teach I think that lessons need to be fun to keep them excited about learning! If you have any questions at all or specific enquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Personal Description:
I have several years English teaching and GCSE examining experience following my degree and am currently teaching English/English at GCSE, A level and undergraduate level on a private basis. I have recently completed a Master's degree in English which I passed with merit. Although I have many years of experience in GCSE English, I would particularly welcome opportunities in A level tutoring and have just been appointed to a panel of A level English examiners.

Teaching Experience:

I originally taught A Level and GCSE English in FE colleges. Following this I started private tutoring in English at all ages and levels along with some basic Primary maths. More recently my work as an English Literature examiner has enhanced my understanding of student needs and of course the requirements of the GCSE exam syllabus. As I have been tutoring for some time now I am familiar with the varying requirements of all the major exam boards in GCSE and A level English Language and English Literature.

Tutoring Approach:

The greatest thing is seeing the student gain in confidence as their ability grows. One to one tuition enables the student to be honest about problems that are difficult to raise in the classroom at school or college. Consequently the tutor can focus on the individual needs of the student. This is the philosophy I adopt in tutoring. I am very conscientious, approachable and happy to adapt to the needs of the individual student , then watch them thrive.

Personal Description:
I am currently a freelance writer and researcher working from home on a variety of subjects, including English Literature, Theatre/Film/Media Studies, Sociology, Psychology, as well as other Humanities. I am flexible about when I can tutor, to work round the schedule of others.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored GCSE, A-level, Degree and Doctorate-level students on a range of subjects, although my main focus has been English Literature and Psychology, and, increasingly, Sociology. At Cambridge I spent a few weeks working in a primary school, as I did when I was younger, and I used to teach primary school children at home as my mum was a childminder. I have run drama clubs and workshops, and worked with a host of young people, including those with learning difficulties. I have written model essays for exam boards, proofread and edited work to be published, and worked on many dissertations and PhDs with University students.

Tutoring Approach:

I have access to previous papers and model exam answers, and ensure that I am clued up on exam specifications and changes. For English, I will of course always read the set texts that my tutees are studying prior to the first session. I like to mind-map various themes and ideas with the student, and think outside the box as it were, and always make sure that the ideas stem from the student's own work and thinking - so that they can remember it more fully and develop it in future (often students have more knowledge, ideas and insight than they realize, it just needs coaxing out of them!). I often tutor on coursework as well as examination preparation.

For Psychology and Sociology, a more systematic approach is required; I generally like to go over the material thoroughly, testing the student throughout, and spend time on previous exam papers and questions, planning essay answers, discussing how theories relate to real-life situations, and generally helping the student grasp what is required of them in the exam.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English and English Literature for over 25 years in both state and independent schools to a wide range of pupils, from the very high achieving to the less able.

At A level I have taught English Literature, English Language, and English Language/Literature.

I have been Head of English for 18 years in two schools (one of which has been one of most successful comprehensive schools in the country) for a number of years. My departments have always been the most successful or among the most successful departments.

My teaching career has involved teaching and tutoring pupils and students of all ages and abilities from year 3 to degree level.

Over a period of three years three of my pupils - from over 350,000 candidates in each year - were awarded the highest marks in the AQA GCSE English and Literature examinations, .

My department received an award for the highest performing A level girls nationally.

My GCSE results for have been consistently better than predictions by between a half a grade and a grade.

I have had similar success with A level.

My classes' National Curriculum levels are usually a level or more better than predictions.

I have successfully coached primary age pupils for entry to public schools and selective state schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Since every student is an individual with their own range of skills and knowledge, I tailor my teaching to their needs. Accordingly, I select from a range of traditional and more informal methods to suit the individual.

The following are some of the areas where different students often require help, although the list is by no means exhaustive:

At Key Stages 2 and 3:

spelling, punctuation, grammar
comprehension, including answering written questions
creativity, including writing descriptions, narratives and poetry
writing skills, including sustaining a coherent, interesting style.

At GCSE:

responding to more complex comprehension questions
writing detailed essays developing use of evidence and discussion
understanding and responding to set texts, including essay responses
techniques for oral work.

At A Level:

Understanding and responding to texts
Analysing spoken and written English
Writing polished, detailed, fluent essays

Working in Groups:

Although I usually work with individuals, it can be more cost-effective if you are able to put together two or more students to work side-by-side.

Personal Description:
I have just completed my degree at the University of Birmingham (BSc Environmental Science) achieving a 2.1 classification. I have just began an MSc in Surveying and Land Environmental Management at the University of Exeter (Penryn campus).

I am well organised, efficient and take a friendly approach to tutoring - as well as being hard-working and easy to get along with, I am reliable and prefer my lessons to be enjoyable as well as informative. My passion for cooking, combined with another passion of mine, travel, has enabled me to spend considerable time in numerous countries giving me first hand knowledge of different languages/cultures and business environments. So far I have been fortunate to visit; New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, France, Spain, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Canary Islands, Norway, Sweden and intend to visit many more.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous tutoring experience with both young people (under 18) and international students at my previous University. I have been able to help my past two tutees from UKtutors to A's in Geography GCSE and A Level respectively.
I also completed a 4 week internship in a New Zealand grammar school in the summer of August/September 2012, allowing me to gain classroom experience.

Meanwhile, I tutor/help out my younger brother who is 18 and just finished his A levels.

I also have my own 'proofreading' enterprise and I have helped foreign students with their conversational English skills since 2011.

Personal Description:
I am a student at the University of Oxford reading German. For my A Levels I studied German, English Literature and History and received A*, A* and an A. For AS I also did Mathematics and for my GCSE's I studied: Maths, Dual Science, English Literature, English Language, German, French, History, Art and Drama.

Teaching Experience:

I worked in a primary school for 6 months in my gap year, primarily teaching reading, writing and mathematics to the younger years as well as art, sport and IT skills. Previous to this job, I taught a German club at a local primary school and have worked on a charity literacy scheme, where I tutored reading and writing one on one to a child who was underachieving for his age group. I have also done other volunteer tutoring at a primary school, reading one on one with the children and improving their literacy skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is best to discuss together what you feel you need help with or needs to be worked on and from there we can assess how best to proceed. I prefer you to bring your own material to me as from this I can see what it is you are struggling with, how advanced your school work is and the level you are aiming for.

Personal Description:
I am a highly dependable, confident and enthusiastic individual with excellent communication skills. I attended a prestigious private school were I obtained an excellent academic record and was appointed a Prefect in my penultimate year, as well as Deputy Head Girl in my final year. I am currently reading English Literature at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle and English has always been a passion of mine, forming an important part of my early life. As a child, my parents had their own business and I was often at a loss for something to do as they were always busy - so I started reading...and the rest is history! In short, I fell in love with books and I am keen to ignite that passion for English in other people. Learning English should not be 'boring' or all about 'hard words' and Shakespeare, it's about using your imagination and indulging in the wonderful characters and worlds that have been created for us to enjoy. Of course, getting good grades at exam level is important, too. However, I believe that really enjoying and appreciating a subject helps your attitude towards the exam. My aim is to help you to enjoy the subject that you study!

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is mainly peer-to-peer in my university seminars. During my time at school I gave up free periods in Sixth Form to assist GCSE Drama students with technique during their lessons in preparation for their exams. This was challenging but very rewarding! I truly believe in helping people to understand things so that they can start to enjoy them and improve their skills. Our A-level English Literature class was very small, with only four students, we would often split off into two pairs and explain our various ideas and interpretations of texts we were studying to each other, this helped me to realise that learning should not be one sided, it is a process of interaction and exchange that is most effective and enjoyable.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, approachable and patient. I will do my very best to assist you in your enjoyment of the subject!

Personal Description:
I am a qualified English teacher. I am currently working as a tutor within schools, supply teacher and privately teaching English. I have been teaching for over ten years, eight years as a full time teacher and two years as a Tutor/Supply Teacher. I hold a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE English and a 2:1 BA (Honours) degree in English. I hold current CRB/police check and I am eligible to work in the UK.

I have demonstrated a flexible approach to cater for individual learning needs and to differentiate the work accordingly, ensuring the personalisation of teaching and learning. I have created resources and effective strategies to support pupils. I have extensive experiences marking GCSE coursework, assessments, GCSE speaking and listening tests, assessments including Controlled Assessment tests. I have organised and participated in workshops to support planning lessons, class activities etc.

In regards to voluntary work, I have spent a lot of time as a voluntary youth support worker at the Saint Patrick's Youth Club Letterkenny between 1984 and 1990. I have organised table tennis competitions and other sporting activities at the club. I created a special youth club magazine and was one of the co-ordinators of an exchange trip with a German youth club in 1986. As a UNICEF volunteer, I have also organised a special charity fundraising event for UNICEF. In 1988, I helped with the visit of the UNICEF Special Ambassador, Miss Audrey Hepburn to a special UNICEF event at the Westbury Hotel.

Over the years I have played a significant role in an intervention strategy of borderline pupils at key stage 3 and 4. I have extensive experience supporting pupils on a One to One basis and in small groups. I have taught mixed ability pupils in years 7, 8 and 9. I have provided appropriate advice to learners and helped many pupils reach their target level grades.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English for over ten years, eight years as a full time English teacher. I have taught very successfully in two schools during this period and have received positive feedback from parents, colleagues and from Ofsted (who rated me as a good teacher). I am passionate about teaching and committed to helping students make real academic progress. I have helped many pupils reach their target level grades. I have excellent subject knowledge and a broad understanding of the curriculum. I have demonstrated a flexible approach to cater for individual learning needs and to differentiate the work accordingly, ensuring the personalisation of teaching and learning. I am supportive and sensitive to the students/tutees needs. I am able to work with tutees with special educational needs as I will differentiate resources accordingly. I generally agree and set targets, which are regularly checked to ensure progress towards the learning outcome. In tutoring, resources are tailored to meet the learner's needs.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring sessions are interactive, fun and stimulating as I believe it is important to help students explore and understand their skills and knowledge base. I encourage pupils to work harder by helping them build their confidence. I support each student in all aspects of learning, including homework support, speaking, listening, reading, writing, practical and functional skills, students undertake assessments to improve both their subject knowledge and examination results.

I try to be creative, but once an idea is understood, I think the key emphasis for the pupil is to practice to re-enforce confidence. I ensure that work is clearly structured and organised to allow the child not feel overwhelmed, but to understand it clearly. I work well with challenging children, with learning disabilities and with those pupils with behavioural problems. I am understanding and patient tutor who encourages all pupils to make a bigger effort.

I love this profession because you never stop learning and it is wonderful to be in this fortunate position to share my passion for this wonderful subject. I believe a tutor has to be flexible to the childs need.

I am passionate about learning throughout the Early Years and Primary stages and take great pride in my ability to empathise with the learning styles of a young person. I am a participant on the TeachFirst program and I am a full time Primary school teacher within that role.

My degree specialism was in Arabic and I passionate about other languages which I teach including Spanish and Somali. In addition, I teach Primary numeracy and literacy on a daily basis and I hope to be an invaluable tutor in bringing your child. As a full-time primary school teacher, I am very familiar with the national curriculum and have successfully provided outstanding lessons and teaching to my class.

I have experience teaching in the Primary phase though both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 in 3 different schools in London and one in Cornwall. In total, I have around 400 hours of total tutoring experience

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified primary school teacher working in an Outstanding Primary school. I have gained a first class honours degree and PGCE from St. Mary's University in Twickenham.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently teaching in KS2 however, I have teaching experience of all ages from Reception to Year 6. I have been tutoring part time for 5 years and am very experienced in tailoring lessons to suit the needs of the tutee.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that it is important to tailor the sessions to suit the strengths of each tutee. Basing lessons around engaging and enjoyable topics will help to approach areas of Maths and English the tutee finds most difficult.
No two sessions are the same and I use a range of resources to get the best results and improvement over a period of sessions.

Tuition sessions should be fun and engaging to ensure that the tutee is fully engaged for the session - ultimately leading to progress and better understanding.

Personal Description:
My name is James I thought about teaching when I was at secondary school, I`m now 35 years old. Tutoring for me is a second profession. I attended the Christchurch Secondary School in Ashford and have attained a my DTLLS - Diploma in Teaching in 2014 at Christchurch University. I teach as part of my day job, teaching law and legislation to the new Officers.

My passion for teaching in my day job has now excited me to the point where I would like to support others in maximizing their potential.

I have been teaching as part of my current role for 6 years, initially with a city and guilds qualification in assessing. I then wanted to further my professional development by completing a teaching diploma at University which I achieved in 2014. I am responsible for teaching new recruits in my day job. This has involved classroom based teaching, scenario assessing and assessing individuals in the workplace against a set of National Occupational Standards (NOS`s) set and awarded by City of Guilds.

I have tutored adults aged 18 - 65 at work and also young persons aged 12-16. I have children myself with the youngest now 8 years of age whom i regular tutor in Maths and English.

My aim is to make the subject fun and engaging. Without having this engagement, learning simply doesn`t happen. The student has to be the number one priority. Being able to talk to the student about common interests as well as the subject matter will allow them to have that moment of escapism before being brought back to the subject at hand. My sessions, although structured to the syllabus being taught are always adaptable and so therefore the style of my teaching will always adapt to allow the student to get the very best from the session.

My style of teaching is relaxed yet purposeful ensuring a quality service.

Personal Description:
Although I'm an English teacher with a real passion for reading and writing, I thoroughly enjoy the outdoors and sports. I play club hockey and adore watching rugby and cricket.

Teaching Experience:

I have been an English teacher for twelve years. In that time I have had several roles and responsibilities beyond the classroom. I am currently the Head of English at a secondary comprehensive, but I will be moving to a preparatory school in September where I will continue to be the Head of English.

I have taught several different GCSE specifications so will be able to support your child regardless of the exam board your son/daughter's school has chosen. There have been lots of changes to GCSE specifications recently so it's more important than ever to be sure your son/daughter is being taught the right thing!

Tutoring Approach:

I take pride in personalising my lessons so that pupils can identify with what I'm teaching and see the relevance of it. No one enjoys learning something for the sake of it! If you understand why you're learning something and what it relates to beyond the classroom, you're more likely to engage with it.

I do take pride in having high expectations (which is evident in my fantastic examination results) so will push your son/daughter to achieve to the best of their ability.

Each Summer I taught English to children aged 7 - 12 from around the world. I lived on site (in a boarding school environment) and I was responsible for teaching, entertaining and caring for the children twenty four hours a day. Having worked for the company for several years I reached the level of Assistant Director and Head of TEFL for the residential course. I was responsible for a team of teaching staff and I ensured they were delivering suitable and stimulating English lessons throughout the course. I also taught a class of my own. As Assistant Director I was a senior part of the management team, ensuring all activity and teaching staff were working happily and correctly. In the absence of the Course Director it was my responsibility alone to ensure the smooth running of our course. I often had to deal with couriers and families and I know how to project a professional, caring, enthusiastic and genuine image. I developed my team work skills, learnt how to thrive under immense pressure and my communication skills were constantly used to their full potential.

Sept 2008 - April 2009 - Kent Youth Theatre - Drama Teacher

• Lesson Planning
• Solo Lesson Delivery
• Team Teaching

I taught children aged from 6 - 16 various theatrical disciplines and dramatic styles. I delivered a three hour workshop weekly. I ensured the children in my care were learning effectively and having a fun and enjoyable time.

March - April 2008 - Point Blank Theatre Company - Drama Facilitator

• Lesson Planning
• Team Teaching
• Behaviour Management
• PR

During a work placement with the Sheffield based theatre company Point Blank I worked with a partner to devise and deliver a cultural drama workshop. I worked as a mentor for two international students who had travelled to the UK to teach school children about their cultures. I taught the two international students how to deliver a successful drama workshop and I helped them shape their own ideas into an educational and enjoyable drama workshop for Primary School children. Alongside this project I also worked with an English partner to create a cultural workshop for deprived children in the city. I contacted The Sheffield Children's Centre and created a relationship with them enabling us to take our workshop to underprivileged children who had never had the chance to express themselves through drama.

June - September 2006 - The Funzone - Playworker

The Fun Zone provided after-school and summer holiday childcare play schemes for children, aged three to twelve. I would lead activities, play group games, prepare and cook the children's meals, clean the rooms, supervise children and be responsible for groups of children on various outings and trips throughout the summer. I learnt how to work with children and how to work effectively to carry out duties such as cooking and cleaning, while making sure the children in my care were both entertained and safe.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly, fun and experienced tutor. I believe a healthy dose of humour and kindness is important when teaching and I am a very professional and hard working person.
