Personal Description:
I am married with four sons and live in Taunton, Somerset. I am interested in gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. I belong to the National Trust and to a town exchange with Lisieux, Normandy. I have had many years of experience in primary schools teaching subjects as required, at both KS1 and KS2 and have a particular interest in English, Reading, Mathematics and History. I taught children on Home Tuition from 8 to 16 years; these children were not able to attend school for various reasons, such as health or behaviour. I taught subjects as required, which included Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography and PSHE. I also taught for four years in a special school teaching EBD students from 8 to 16 years; this included teaching English, History, PSHE, Maths and Science to GCSE; in this post I took responsibility in the headteacher's absence. I have taught students English as a Foreign Language in my home since 1996; these have included children and adults and have had different levels of competence in English including beginner. I have also taught pupils studying for entrance exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I have had many years of experience and teach sympathetically; I am very patient. I have a variety of materials for the different subjects and make them as interesting as possible. I adapt my teaching to the individual's needs, whether advanced or those who find it more difficult to learn. I have had much experience of teaching Reading, Handwriting and Spelling and also for entrance exams. Frequently I use a multi-sensory approach and educational games. If it is suitable, I give homework. I can teach two students together if they are learning the same subject. I am very flexible. I am a qualified teacher of English with many years of study, research and training in some of the world's top universities. My qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in English Literature and the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in English, including Media Studies and Drama. My Initial Teacher Training covered all aspects of English and all abilities in the 11-18 age range. I have also given one-to-one tuition to looked-after teenagers under a government scheme as well as taught in a secure unit for which, in addition to enhanced disclosure CRBs, I was vetted over a six month period. My first long-term (over 3 months) supply position involved teaching GCSE English, 'A' Level English Literature, and the IB. Most of my teaching has been in selective (grammar) schools. I have also given English lessons in my local community as part of an outreach programme organised for speakers of other languages by my church where I teach Bible Studies also.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to establish the needs of the students and carefully review all available assessment records. If the student is preparing for a special exam such as the GCSE, I would start by ensuring that the student is aware of the full requirements of the exam and establish a clear plan to cover these. Alongside any such programme, I believe strongly in incorporating the fundamentals of English grammar which are sometimes overlooked in formal teaching settings. I'm a wife and mother of two daughters and I work in education. I can't say what age group I prefer working with as I just love the process of facilitating the learning of others and seeing them 'get it' - the light bulb moment! I have worked in schools for the past 11 years in a number of roles. I am a trained Primary teacher with a specialism in Spanish. Tutoring Approach:

I try to vary my approach to tutoring depending upon the needs of the tutee and their preferred learning style. I feel it is important that the learner has the opportunity to take ownership of the learning experience, though some need more guidance than others. I like to encourage learners so that they realise that they are capable of so much more than they originally thought possible. I mentor GCSE students at my school and find that young people in particular may have problems self-esteem and this hinders their learning, particularly in a group setting. Working one to one gives students that little bit of breathing space they need to work through their problems without having to feel self-conscious - then they can feel more confident and flourish when they go back into the classroom.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to proof-editing / English checking is to look primarily at the language. For some clients - university students in particular - it is not appropriate to offer an editorial service as this goes against the rules of university submissions. However, where I think a mistake has been made or something is not clearly expressed - and it is not a simple matter of correcting the language - then I will flag it up to the student so they can look at it again.

My main aim with students is to build their confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. To this end I concentrate on teaching the skills they require to achieve the grades they want. My role is not to replace the teaching they get at school but to compliment it so a tutoring session could concentrate on planning an essay the student has been asked to write or going through specific areas the student needs help with. I won't necessarily give homework - unless required - as I feel students have enough to do without me adding to their workload.

In return I expect my students to engage with the sessions. They don't have to like the subject and of course I'm there to help those who don't understand some things or just need a little help or encouragement, but the student must be prepared to be tutored.

Personal Description:
I am a current teacher who believes learning must, at all times, be relevant and fun. I always spend a lot of time planning my lessons to make sure that students learn as quickly as possible, whilst at the same time making sure that they become pro-active learners. My passion is English, and I aim to pass this passion on to all of my students through lessons that are filled with fun, engaging discussion and exciting tasks.

Although I do believe in fun and engaging lessons, I also am very aware of the need to work towards the Assessment Objectives that exam boards give, of which students are ultimately measured by in their examinations. My planning, therefore, always takes into account the mixture of fun and focus on assessment objectives that is needed for both enjoyment and success.

I have deliberately not pursued a career in management in schools because I find huge enjoyment in teaching students privately. Parents often contact me because, sadly, their child is not working at their potential at their school, for whatever reason that may be. To take a student who may not be reaching their potential and transform them into a confident and successful English student is the most rewarding thing that I believe I can possibly do in my career, which is why my focus is now increasingly leaning towards private tuition.

My particular areas of expertise are English students who are either preparing for their 11+ examinations, students who need booster sessions in Key Stage 3 and students who need help in passing their GCSE examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I have held the post of Head of English at a school in Staffordshire, and I have led a team of exceptional English teachers. Having held other management positions in other schools as well, with management focus on both key Stage 3 and 4, I have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can now put to good use within the sphere of personal tuition.

I am also an experienced examiner, having marked for a leading exam body for five years now. This has helped me enormously to build up a very clear understanding of what exam boards require from students.

Last year's results saw a continuation of my fine record of exam success, where my class achieved 100% A-C in their GCSE examinations. My current year 11 class are predicted to have 5 A*'s, 10 A grades and fifteen B grades. This will be the finest set of English class results in the school's history.

I have built up tremendously successful working relationship with my clients, and parents who I currently work for, and worked for, have happily created testimonials for me which I would be able to provide for your perusal upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

My largest concern for my students is to make sure that their confidence is built up by becoming pro-active and independent learners. All too often tutors 'spoon-feed' their students, leading them to a false sense of security in their skills, which therefore leads to poor performance in examinations.

I also view myself as a 'English Coach', as I place a very big emphasis on ensuring that students have the right frame of mind when approaching studying English. Confidence, and belief in their own ideas, is so important for students to have, and all too often this lack of confidence is instrumental in why they are not performing as they should be.

Personal Description:
I am a well-educated graduate who has previously tutored Flute, Mathematics and Science.

I have also previously supported disabled students with their studies - so please do not hesitate to contact me if this is causing you worry.

Due to the need to get to know a student and their requirements, I do not charge for the first hour of my time - although this is for 'fact-finding' and not a tuition session as such.

Teaching Experience:

I have over a decade's experience teaching all subjects at primary level in addition to Mathematics and Sciences to A-Level.

I also have previous experience teaching mathematics and science from early years (5yrs old) to Secondary age and beyond including tutoring for both GCSE and A-Level examinations.

I am also first-aid trained by Wallace Cameron (First Aid at Work) and have a post-graduate leadership qualification.

Tutoring Approach:

I work under the assumption that all children and adults have the ability to succeed, and have high expectations of them. Having said this I am fully aware that a great many people have difficulty with some subjects, especially mathematics. I aim to remove the fear or maths, and instill understanding rather than teaching by rote. If you are unsure as to what your child/children would benefit from learning I am quite happy to assess them against the National Curriculum and dependent on the total number of hours you wish to book, I do not normally charge for this.

Please note that although parents are always quite welcome to stay for any session, this is not always productive as it can make some children nervous - although for flute tuition it is recommended that a parent/guardian stay for the first lesson, as this lesson includes teaching a child how to stand with the instrument, if the parent is aware of the correct position they can help their child at home and greatly speed learning. If a lesson is occurring at my home I do of course have tea/coffee facilities and somewhere you can wait for your children!

I am willing to travel to your home for lessons if this is easier for you, although an extra charge may apply to cover my time and expense although we will of course agree this prior to undertaking the session.

An hour long session to discuss your needs and talk about what you want to get out of private tutoring is offered free of charge to new students.

I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. My intimate knowledge of the state education system and beyond has imbued me with the ability to gauge how assignments will be assessed and thus I can work with students not only on improving their knowledge, but showcasing this in highly-marked, structured and coherent written forms.

I use a number of methods to achieve this, including homework assignments, but also using character adoption, audio-visual aids and a mixture of written and verbal questions of varying length and form.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Cumbria, where I studied Primary Teaching with Special Educational Needs. Teaching Experience:

Throughout my degree, I have worked with children and young people aged between 4 and 25. I have worked mainly in mainstream schools, where I was responsible for planning and delivering all areas of the curriculum. I spent last Summer working at Camp Lee Mar, a residential special needs camp in America. Here, I worked closely with children and young people with special needs, focusing on their individual tutoring needs. I have also worked as a teaching assistant and a supply teacher, working closely with children to build on their strengths and any areas they may find difficult.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that all children and young people have different needs, and as such each tutoring session must be approached differently. However, I believe it is important to instill the confidence within the child or young person to learn themselves and enjoy learning. No question is a stupid question
