Personal Description:
I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies in 2005 and more recently, Wimbledon College of Art, achieveing a 2:1 in Costume Design. I live in South East London working as a tutor and free lance costume designer. I specialise in english, history and theatre studies but have also taught maths, science, non verbal and verbal reasoning. Tutoring Approach:

In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage my pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning!

I'm an experienced stage and television actor with a degree in English (2.i) from Trinity Hall, Cambridge and a 2-year post-grad qualification from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. I live in central London (Westminster) and enjoy balancing out the right brain activities of acting with the rather more left brain activities of teaching - especially Latin, which I studied through A-Level to degree, taking a Latin translation and literary criticism paper in Part 1 of my Cambridge Tripos.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught both privately and at a range of different schools and colleges for many years. My private client base has principally been in teaching Latin for Common Entrance and GCSE. In terms of classroom experience, I have worked as a supply Latin teacher at Eaton House Schools and as an A-Level English Tutor at Collingham Tutors. The majority of my work is as a private tutor travelling to people's homes and offering additional support to 10-16 year olds who are struggling with their Latin. I have a huge success rate in terms of results, regularly turning C-grade students into A-graders.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is both pragmatic and personal. Every child is different and therefore every child requires a subtly different approach. In terms of teaching English Literature my principle objective is to inspire. In terms of teaching Latin my key concerns are rigour and attention to detail. I supervised the children and helped them to play carefully and safely during the lunch breaks by being around them and ensuring they were behaving. These skills meant that I gained respect from the children and they trusted me to help and look after them during my work experience. From developing these key leadership skills at such a young age I was able to demonstrate them adequately through my years of working in retail, working my way up from a sales advisor to a supervisor within six months.

My teaching style would be firm but fair.
I would help them with certain aspects of their course which they were struggling with and depending on their age I would range with help in essay writing, essay style and approaches to writing essays. I would help guide them through the reading process and close analytical reading, as well as guiding them through the essay writing process.
I would be able to expand their knowledge of the books on the course and help them complete coursework.
I am clearly a strong English student as I have always achieved high grades at school and have continued to study to degree level.

I am a recent graduate of Creative Writing from the University of Manchester, where I studied both Creative Writing, and English language and literature. I love the English language, and greatly enjoy reading a wide variety of literature. I believe that my passion for teaching comes from this love of language.

I have experience of teaching both Spanish to English speakers and English to Spanish speakers. I taught English to Primary school students, while I was in Spain, in both group and individual study sessions. We covered basic conversation, grammar and writing skills, and by the end of the course my students were able to hold basic conversations and use key vocabulary and phrases confidently.

More recently I have been tutoring Spanish at beginner level to adults in Birmingham. I have devised a simple curriculum that can be taught in one hour or two hour sessions, with my tutees picking up the language and grammar quickly.

Personal Description:
I have grown up in East Yorkshire and attended Lancaster University to take a degree in German Studies which I am now finishing on a part-time basis due to personal circumstances. I have always enjoyed German as a language and personally find the history and culture of Germany to be something that is almost second-nature to me, as I have had to both read up on various aspects of the history for my courses in the past, but it's also something I also enjoy doing as a hobby. It might also help that I find the sound of the language to be something quite nuanced and quite different from the stereotype of people yelling at one another.
I enjoy listening to classical music, so it could be seen that I am pretty patient!

Teaching Experience:

When on my year abroad in Germany, I helped tutor Syrians, Moroccans and Tunisians English, as the university I attended on my Erasmus year only taught English for scientific and specialist translation courses, rather than anything outside of specifically engineering or chemical terms.

Tutoring Approach:

I would like to tutor in person if at all possible, as my experience of using Skype in the past has been fraught with technical niggles, though it is possible if transport becomes an issue.
Tutoring based on exercises and trying to creatively apply knowledge and lighten the mood as far as possible with the student, I do not really believe in learning by rote, except for maybe things like grammatical declensions. It's essentially about fostering a good working relationship first to then establish where any weaknesses may lie and thusly make concrete a learning objective. E.g. misuse of relative pronouns in a clause could be remedied with exercises involving conjugated pronouns in general.
