Personal Description:
I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Education forms the foundation for freeing us from bigotry and ignorance, makes us better people and permits us to live richer, better lives. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I used to work as a research physicist at Cambridge University in an indefinable capacity. I had several years of poor physical health (fit and healthy now) that made funding an issue, so I was an unofficial PhD student researching quantum computing and foundational issues in physics.

I have always have had a dual interest in the arts and philosophy, literature in particular. I've written a novel and several full length plays as well as directing at the student theatre in Cambridge and making short films. I recently decided to form my own film production company and work full time as a writer and director for films and plays. Our first short film is in production and we are applying for funding for a feature.

I'd say my approach to education is rigorous, highly intellectual and what one might term renaissance in approach. I'm interested in all aspects of education, and how our disparate academic disciplines connect which is somewhat antithetical to the modern approach to education but just the sort of thing one needs to get into Oxbridge and the like.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible, regardless of their ability; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many (over 100) students privately over the past six years, improving their results in all cases where the students have followed my advice and worked hard

I have experience of teaching children as young as five through to graduates and am happy to work one to one, in small groups or in a classroom.

I also help set up and run and small charity to improve the educational standards of recent immigrants in inner city London where I taught all ages of students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient and I persevere. I am happy to tutor people across all ranges of ability but i expect you to work hard and follow my advice.

My tutoring includes:

- free initial consultation with needs assessment and lesson
- encouragement of free and critical thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- coaching for Oxbridge entrance including the STEP papers
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition

Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover East, central and South London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.

Personal Description:
I have a first degree in English, Postgraduate Diploma in IT, Adult Teacher's Certificate, TEFL and Business English teaching qualifications. For the last four years I have specialised in teaching EFL/ESOL.

I also offer support students who are in the process of writing dissertations/theses from any discipliine.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for eleven years now. During this time, I have worked both in colleges and community settings.

I specialise in EFL/ESOL but also teach English Language, Literature and Literacy. I have experience of teaching at different levels from total beginners through to supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in an informal approach to tutoring. In a classroom enviornment or one-to-one basis, I always try to create a relaxed atmoshere. I find that this facilitates a good relationship between myself and student(s). Students feel able to approach me without feeling nervous about something they do not understand or are having difficulty with.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and in turn, I believe this encourages my students to enjoy the learning process.

Personal Description:
I am an honours graduate of computer science and electronics. I spent 17 years in corporate management before becoming self employed as, among other things, a freelance lecturer. I am a professional life coach and tutor for enjoyment.

Please note: I may add a travel supplement to the fee my journey to you takes ages( e.g. rush hour) or consumes lots of petrol, but you'll always know if advance and be in control.

Teaching Experience:

I taught freelance for Bedford College for 4 years, and have been tutoring for 7 years. I have qualifications in adult teaching, and my coaching qualification also helps a lot.

Tutoring Approach:

Effective tutoring is a wonderful opportunity because I can tailor what I do very specifically for the student I'm working with, and that's as much about their personality and stress levels as it is about the material we're working with. I believe in teaching understanding rather than isolated rules, it builds confidence and security and does not rely on memory. My sessions are as relaxed and fun-filled as I can possibly make them without sacrificing the learning task before us.

Personal Description:
Originally from Newcastle, I am now an actor and enjoy tutoring alongside my acting work. I have worked in TV, and also in theatre, including venues such as The National Theatre and the West End. I studied English and Drama at Bristol University and then went on to train at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Recently, I have been tutoring in English, Drama, 11+ Common Entrance exams and general Primary school help.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring since graduation 5 years ago. Alongside my tutoring, I am currently teaching Music and Drama in schools and I run workshops with Sixth Formers on ways of analysing texts practically.

Experience:
A Level English Lit (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

11+ - worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. 11+ - I am currently working with Rohan on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths, slowly preparing him for 11+ examinations in January 2016.

7+ - Working with Elektra (6) preparing her for 7+ Examinations. Covering English, Maths and Reasoning focussed on entry to Notting Hill and Ealing High School.

Homeschooling - working with Inigo (7) on English and Maths one day a week. Mainly focussed on Inigo's writing and spelling.

Primary Help - Worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. If you have any questions at all or specific enquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Personal Description:
I am 33 years old and currently live in London. I am originally from Derbyshire in the north of England. Before becoming a teacher, I worked with children aged between 2 and 12 in a variety of environments. I enjoy sport and run and coach the school Year 6 football team, I also enjoy playing tennis and swimming. I have worked with children of various ages for the last six years and have been a qualified teacher for 5 years.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified primary school teacher and currently preparing a Year 6 class for their 11+ exams in West London. I have 5 years experience in teaching during which time I have taught Year 4 (8/9 year olds), Year 5 and Year 6 (10/11 year olds, final year at primary school). Last year I underwent training for a one-to-one teaching programme, which involved working with individual children, each for an hour a week. As a full time primary school teacher, I teach all National Curriculum subjects including Maths, English and Science, I also have experience teaching the 11+ syllabus. I was also the ICT coordinator at a previous school and excel in the subject knowledge and teaching of this subject.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that patience, flexibility and a desire for a child to reach their potential are key to being a successful tutor. Children need to be extended and pushed to ensure that they are not just doing the minimum to succeed, but the best that they can possibly do. I believe that my approach to tutoring is a balance of patience and persistence which is very successful in getting results. I am flexible in the way that I tutor, meaning that I can use a variety of teaching styles to suit the individual child's needs. No two children are the same and therefore each child learns in a different way. I am sensitive to the individuals needs and am able to find the best way for them to reach their potential.

I AM ALSO ABLE TO TUTOR FOR THE 11+.

Personal Description:
I started training as a teacher shortly after leaving college. I had to abandon the idea in my last year due to my fathers untimely death. Teaching has always been the center of my strengths from an early age, I had watched my father teach in primary and felt confident that one day I would do the same thing. Although teaching is a thankless task and many we teach forget us very quickly. I do feel it provides us with a self satisfaction that we have made a difference. My academic qualification started at East College following through to Greenwich University and ended with the Brentwood Diocese receiving a CCRS in Religious studies.

Teaching Experience:

My Post graduation in Certificate of education was accredited by the Greenwich University. My Humanities Degree was through the Open University and continuing accreditation from the Trinity College where I received a CertTESOL qualification in English. In addition I attended the Brentwood Diocese to take up 8 modules in order to receive CCRS in Religious studies allowing me to teach in Catholic Schools.
I have taught in both Primary and Secondary school and colleges. I have my own Tutoring academy in Essex that services over thirty students a week. Although I have already secured a foot hold in the field of teaching I believe that my skills and dedication to the field is strengthened by my full vocation and love I have in education and learning.

Tutoring Approach:

Students at all level are unique. Every child no matter what level they are work towards their best ability. We as teachers should always adhere to the child's needs not what we can offer but what they can give us. Learning is a to way participation. Understanding and perseverance is only part of teaching we must empathies ourselves to the child and find the weakness and strengthen it. I have said I have my own academy but I have done it not through advertising but referrals from past students. After almost 4 years its still the same as it as always was.

Personal Description:
I am very experienced and successful tutor of English and Maths. I did an English degree at Cambridge, a PGCE at Nottingham, and then worked as an English and Drama teacher for 10 years, latterly as Head of Department. I have worked in educational and children's television since then, as a producer, director and writer. I have made over 500 programmes for broadcast on the BBC, Channel 4, and around the world, winning numerous educational awards in the UK and internationally. I am married with two children.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in and near London, for four years in a grammar school and for six years in two different comprehensives, teaching English Language and Literature, and Drama.
My teaching experience more recently has been through creating television scripts, CD-ROMs and websites, especially helping young people to enjoy and learn maths. Supporting my daughter through her GCSEs and A levels has kept me very much in touch with students' needs, and working with my son has given me great insight into children with special needs.
I am currently tutoring seventeen students, ranging in age from six years to adult.

Tutoring Approach:

I help children, young people and adults learn through motivating them and building their confidence. I aim to make learning thorough, clear, enjoyable and inspirational; to make obscure things interesting, complex things simple, and dull things entertaining. Learning should be purposeful and fun.

Personal Description:
I have enjoyed working with children in teaching and pastoral roles for more than seven years. I have completed Level 2 and Level 3 certificates in counselling training, and I am currently working towards my Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling; as a result I have developed valuable listening skills. My other interests include patchwork sewing and baking. I have a calm and gentle approach, and I have a proven ability to make children feel at ease when working with me.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years experience of working in primary schools across all age-ranges. My various roles have included teaching: all subjects in whole class groups; extra basic skills support in small groups; and one-to-one phonics and spellings lessons. I have helped children to achieve excellent progress in all my roles.

In my experience as a private tutor for almost four years, I have tutored children between the ages of six and eleven, including preparation for SATs and eleven plus tests. I have excellent references which highlight children's significant progress and increased confidence since working with me.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor tutoring to the individual child, focusing on their strengths and preferred learning styles. I use games to reinforce concepts while making learning enjoyable. I offer rewards, such as stickers and certificates, to motivate and recognise children's achievements. All my lessons are thoroughly planned and prepared, and regular assessment informs planning for later lessons.

Targets are set at an initial meeting and are reviewed on a termly basis, when new targets may be set. A written report is given to parents and carers at the end of each term. Reductions in fees are offered if you are able to pay for a block of lessons in advance.

I have extensive experience tutoring Mathematics and Physics to small groups and on a one to one basis. I also have some experience in large classroom teaching from KS3 up to A-Level.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and open in my approach to tutoring. I believe anyone willing to learn has the capacity to do so, and I hope I can share some of the passion I have for my area of interest.

Personal Description:
My name is Kieran and I am an enthusiastic English student currently studying at Loughborough University. I have worked in the theatre for around eight years and am therefore incredibly confident and easily approachable. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at school and always thought about the prospect of teaching or tutoring so that I could pass on my knowledge and love for English to those who perhaps need some extra help in reaching those top grades at GCSE and AS level. My age also allows me to empathise with current GCSE and A-Level students as it was not long ago that I sat those exams myself. I am therefore confident with current exam board syllabuses and the relevant texts being studied. Please feel free to contact me regarding the tutoring of English Literature.

Teaching Experience:

Supervisor and staff at Rainham School for Girls summer school 2012.
Volunteer at local theatre group teaching 7 - 18 year olds music.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very relaxed attitude towards tutoring as I believe this is the best environment to learn. Students will bring current school work with them to the session and we will work through any problems or issues that they are struggling with. As well as this, I will prepare literary examples and worksheets if students give me notice as to what they wish to study during the coming session. I am completely dedicated to helping and supporting those who need an extra push during exams or even just wish to receive extra guidance within the field of English Literature.

Personal Description:
Hi there, my name is Kirsty and I am a first year BA (Hons) English student at the University of Chichester.

English has been my favourite subject ever since primary school, and after my graduation I am planning on completing a PGCE in Education in order to teach at secondary level. For this reason, tutoring would be both a rewarding and valuable experience for me in terms of enhancing my application.

Teaching Experience:

I enjoy working with children and young adults, and have been volunteering with a local Guide group for the past year. This semester I have also ran a small 'Introduction to Grammar' session for those on my course with no previous experience of A Level English Language. I am proud to say that all my 'students' passed their exam that term with flying colours!

Tutoring Approach:

Approaching complex ideas in fun, kinesthic and memorable ways: emphasis on placing ideas within a context the pupils can relate to in order to visualise examples in the world around them. Use of PowerPoint presentations, flash cards, mind maps, audio and visual aids, look/cover/write/check activities, for instance. Developing a close rapport with the pupils through showing an interest in the pupil's own opinion of the subjects covered; exploring their concerns and difficulties so that problems can be solved quickly before motivation drops.

Subjects
  • English
  • 11+ (secondary) (9 p.h.)
  • GCSE or Standards (9 p.h.)

Qualifications:
15 GCSEs at grades A*-B including both English Language and English Literature at grades AA.
3 A Levels including English Language and English Literature at BC.
Currently completing a BA (Hons) degree in English with the intention of becoming a teacher at secondary-level.

Personal Description:
Gabriel is currently a second-year LLB Law (Hons) at the University of Manchester.
He is a foreign student from Singapore and is ethnic Chinese.

Other than being proficient in English, he is fluent is Mandarin and Cantonese. He is also learning Spanish at the moment (intermediate DELE B1).

After completing his A Levels in 2008, he spent 22 months performing mandatory military service in Singapore before embarking on his tertiary education in law at the University of Manchester.

He counts reading and running as his past times. Gabriel has taken part in a mixture of endurance events and his most satisfying accomplishment is the completion of a 100KM Ultramarathon.

Teaching Experience:

Gabriel was a relief teacher for 3 months at Ngee Ann Primary School (Singapore).
Over there, he taught students from the age of 7 to 12.

His teaching subjects there included English, Mathematics, Mandarin, Science and Physical Education.

Gabriel studied English, Mandarin, Mathematics, Geography, History, Economics for his Cambridge University A Levels in 2008.

Tutoring Approach:

Gabriel believes in having a personable tutoring style, which would enable the tutee to feel at ease so that he or she would feel comfortable with raising any questions or requesting to repeat a point.

Interaction would be at the heart of the tuition sessions as this would allow the tutee to have the chance to speak more (English or Mandarin), which would allow him or her to have a chance to practise as well as for Gabriel to identify any possible mistakes with his or her spoken capability.

Since Gabriel is fluent in English, there would not be any communication problems during Mandarin sessions.

Personal Description:
I am a well qualified and experienced teacher in Maths, English Language & Science. I have taught in various secondary schools for well over 14 years and have also offered one to one tuition in to many pupils in Primary & Secondary schools.

I possess a degree in education and a teacher training certifiate (PGCE) in Maths & ICT.I have successfully helped pupils to gain exceptional results in their subject areas. I am also a National Education award winner.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my experience in education, both studying and teaching, I have realised that not all students are given sufficient attention from the teacher.

This is a problem inherent within the education system. Let me explain. The average school-class consists of approximately 25 students and the average teacher works under tremendous pressures. These include the demands of completing the syllabus, time restraints and teaching students of mixed abilities. For these reasons, it is usually the case that teachers are unable to attend to the needs of each individual at all times.

As a result, it is very likely that some students fail to understand key concepts or even lose confidence in themselves and in the subject. Now I have launched my own personal tutoring service: Private Tuition UK
which is tailored specifically to each pupils requirements.

Tutoring Approach:

Committed
Flexible

Good Communication Skills
Good Time Management Skills
Enthusiastic

Personal Description:
I am a 29 year old English teacher and have been in full time employment in a secondary school for seven years. I am friendly and supportive. I feel that I do a great job in making a challenging subject easy and accessible.

I am based in Glasgow City Centre and run a tutoring school for Saturday morning classes. If you wish to contact me I will provide full details of my tutoring school and if you decide to join my classes I will fully refund any cost you incur by deducting it from your first fee. (Details cannot be revealed via this profile in order to respect the guidelines of UK tutors).

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English from National 4 and 5, Intermediate and Higher, through to Advanced Higher over seven years. My Department achieves results far higher than comparator schools and well above the national average.
I am one of two managers of Saturday School.

Tutoring Approach:

I have successfully tutored Standard Grade, Intermediate and Higher pupils over the past seven years. All of the pupils have attained the best possible grades.

In order to maximise attainment, my approach to teaching English involves working through the various question types pupils can expect to see in the main exam. For Close Reading I concentrate on: Understanding, by looking at own word questions, the context question and link questions; Analysis, by looking at word choice, imagery, sentence structure, tone and language; Evaluation, by focusing on pupil response and the final question. For Critical Essay, I concentrate on teaching my students how to logically structure an essay, develop skills in learning key quotations and prepare them to write under exam conditions. The folio aspect of the course is addressed after assessing individual pupils and through vital one to one discussions which take place during designated classes and through Edmodo.

I prefer a relaxed environment and pupils whom I have tutored in the past academic years have achieved As in Higher and Intermediate English. I also offer a "Pass Promise".

Personal Description:
I am currently in my final year at St Paul's Girls' School, studying for A-levels in Maths, History and Economics. My favourite subject areas are the humanities and social sciences; I have wide-ranging academic interests which go beyond my A-level courses, and am planning to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University starting in October. I enjoy balancing my studies with other activities, including music and outdoor activities such as horseriding and completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience began with helping my younger brother (now 13) prepare for his school exams, and I went on to volunteer at a local primary school teaching Latin to Year 5 children. I have also spent three years in the air cadets, where I held a senior role mentoring younger cadets and teaching them practical skills as well as theoretical subjects related to aeronautics. This has given me the opportunity to work with children with a wide range of interests, abilities and learning styles.

Tutoring Approach:

I cater my approach to suit the ability and learning styles of the pupil. Finding an approach that suits the individual is important, and I use a variety of activities and learning methods to maintain variety, and make sessions more enjoyable. During the first session I will assess the pupil and discuss their aims. Whilst focussing on these aims, or on the syllabus, I also believe in encouraging interests which go beyond it. I aim to maintain continuity and monitor progress by consolidating what has been covered on in previous sessions before moving on to new areas.
