Personal Description:
My name is Teresa and I am a trainee Educational Psychologist currently studying for a Doctorate in Child, Community and Educational Psychology. I hold a BSc degree in Clinical Psychology and a PGCE teaching qualification specialising in Primary Languages. I also hold MSc Credits in Science. I have experience teaching in mainstream and special educational needs schools with primary school aged children and have worked in Secondary Education settings. I hold a current CRB check.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently a qualified teacher with experience in Early years up to year 6. I have experience tutoring Key Stage 3 students outside of school and University students. I also have a lot of experience with special educational needs. I currently work/study as an Educational Psychologist so have regular contact with children, adolescents and young adults.

Tutoring Approach:

My first step will be to find out exactly what a tutee wants to get from the tutoring and how they best learn. Then we can collaboratively make a timetable and plan that suits both of us. My tutoring style is difficult to describe as it will vary from individual to individual. I always try to make use of resources which support the learning style and will incorporate the child's interests into my lesson plans. I feel that it is important to be flexible and will ask the tutee if there is anything they want me to do differently.

Personal Description:
I'm a ex-mathematical physicist from Cambridge turned film director, and also freelance as a data-scientist. I have two funded feature films in development and have made music videos and adverts. I started tutoring when I switched careers because the film industry is unstable, especially as a freelancer. I keep up the tutoring now because I enjoy it and look for assignments I think are interesting and where I can really make a difference.

I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Education forms the foundation for freeing us from bigotry and ignorance, makes us better people and permits us to live richer, better lives. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I'd say my approach to education is rigorous, highly intellectual and what one might term renaissance in approach. I'm interested in all aspects of education, and how our disparate academic disciplines connect which is somewhat antithetical to the modern approach to education but just the sort of thing one needs to get into Oxbridge and the like.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible, regardless of their ability; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many (over 100) students privately over the past six years, improving their results in all cases where the students have followed my advice and worked hard. I'm only interested in teaching people who are prepared to do this work and better themselves, especially if its for something like the 11+/common entrance.

Beside the subjects listed in my profile, I will also teach 11+/common entrance, coding/game design, statistics and probability, film-making, creative writing, government and politics, economics.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient and I persevere. I am happy to tutor people across all ranges of ability but I expect you to work hard and follow my advice.

My tutoring includes:

- encouragement of free and critical thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- coaching for Oxbridge entrance including the STEP papers
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition

Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover all areas of London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.

Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
Hello! I am 39 years old, originally from Denmark and moved to the UK 13 years ago for my degree. Before teaching, I worked as a monkey veterinary technician in the US, conducted my Masters research on crop-raiding macaques in Indonesia, and helped to run a volunteer expedition in the Amazon. After a couple of years of teaching in secondary school as a Science and Spanish teacher, I heard the call of the wild again and travelled for a year through Mexico and Central America. I have worked for an independent school in the Rochdale area for over 5 years and have gained experience tutoring a wide range of subjects and a wide range of ages.

I have an up to date enhanced CRB.

Teaching Experience:

I completed my teaching degree in 2007 at Canterbury Christ Church University. I trained in two very different types of schools, private Catholic school and selective high school, which gave me the experience to engage students of different abilities and backgrounds. I also received training to teach EAL and SEN students. My teaching qualification is in Science, but as a fluent Spanish linguist I have also taught Spanish to both adults and children in schools and private tuition. I teach Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics up to GCSE level. I can also teach English Key Stage 3.

Tutoring Approach:

Students, young and old, don't like subjects they don't think they can succeed in. My approach is to break down material, relate it to everyday life and interests, and positively reinforce all the way to build up confidence. I am stubborn (!) and I don't give up until it's mastered.

Personal Description:
Currently a Visiting Research Fellow at King's College London, I am a holder of a PhD, yet I was not happy at school: I was only saved in education by a marvellous teacher. I went from wanting to leave school at 16 to getting 8 A* and an A at GCSE, full marks in most modules of AS and A2 English, History, Politics, and AS Economics and Latin, a First in an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Language at King's College London, and a Distinction in an MA in History and English. The turning point was finding a teacher who believed in my abilities. As a tutor, I have helped students of all types unlock their potential and achieve the academic outcomes they deserve.

I hold season tickets at Arsenal, have played rugby for 10 years (and have been on the committee for three), and currently train young event horses near Reading.

Teaching Experience:

I am a Visiting Research Fellow at King's College London's English department, lecturing in Jane Austen, Romantic Poetry, Eighteenth Century Studies and on the essay writing programme. I teach from first year undergraduate to Masters level courses.

I teach every year at Heathfield Summer School, working with students from 8 to 18 years old from as many as twenty-five different nationalities from across the globe. I also am the director of the English with Style course at the summer school.

During the rest of the year, I have a number of private students and have taught English, History, Politics, RS, Geography, Biology and Chemistry. I have also had experience working with students with dyspraxia, ADD and ADHD, Asperger's and dyslexia of varying degrees.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my lessons according to the student's needs, personality and their required approach: I can either work in an academically demanding and serious manner, or can emphasise learning through play, experience and diversity, and even fun! The approach I use for helping a student into Oxbridge is very different to the ways I encourage and support a disaffected child or teen struggling in a particular skill or subject. It is also important to establish the student's most receptive learning method, for which I have various quick tests, establishing whether to emphasise the visual, aural or kinaesthetic, or to use a combination of all three.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly and approachable tutor with a huge amount of enthusiasm in the subjects I teach. I was awarded a Scholarship to a competitive independent before working towards a Masters in Biochemistry at Oxford University.

I have since worked as a Pharmaceuticals Business Analyst, as a High Yield Chemicals Industry Analyst in Investment Banking and as an Air Traffic Controller. In each case the knowledge and skills from my education have been critical. I would now like to gain the satisfaction of helping others do well in these subjects and attain their potential.

Teaching Experience:

In my industries it is critical to continue learning and passing exams, and in every role, I have always had to pass on my knowledge and understanding to others, which has been incredibly gratifying. More recently, I have enjoyed tutoring maths and other subjects to pupils locally, often to help them gain entrance to competitive schools. I also enjoy spending time teaching my son and my nieces.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should always be interesting to the pupil - inspirational even - and that the onus is on the teacher to make this the case. Learning is about being curious and asking questions; in fact I believe pupils should not be scared to ask any question, which means that learning should feel relaxed rather than formal.

Subjects should not be seen as complex but rather layers of straight forward principals that build on what the pupil already knows in an intuitive fashion. In this way, a good teacher allows understanding to grow naturally and not feel like a challenge.

I have always enjoyed learning because my teachers, for the most part, made it fun so I'm keen to do the same with my students. I don't think anything that's worth studying has to be boring and I'm dedicated to making my students learn almost without realising they are doing it.

Personal Description:
I decided to start tutoring after my experience in trying to get tutors for my own children. As a professional working internationally I thought it would be easy to hand over this important element of their education to someone with both experience and patience. My notion was quickly turned on its head. The Tutors I found taught textbook style with the one shoe fits all approach. My children and others didn't fit into that mould. I very quickly realised that I could do a better job and took the role in house, initially teaching my own daughters before extending out to their friends.
To date I have tutored over 50 children who have gone onto their chosen schools and streams. I believe that tutoring should be about delivering skills to children that they can carry with them throughout their young lives and provide a solid platform on which to develop.

Teaching Experience:

Have tutored key stage 2 and 3.
11 plus students and common entrance applicants.
Recently started to tutor mildly dyslexic students in English comprehension and Language.
Currently writing essays for publication in English Literature and Sociology and Business GCSE and AS level. As well as E papers for 11 plus students.

Tutoring Approach:

I love seeing peoples enthusiasm toward a subject which I also share the same excitement towards however I am also passionate about helping people who may need help or are looking for methods to improve their skills in these topics.

Personal Description:
I have moved to North Devon in the last year and am setting up a Tutoring Business alongside training as a Psychotherapist. I have worked with children for 14 years and have a lot of experience with them and very much enjoy teaching them. The feedback I have had so far is that their child feels much more confident that then builds a good foundation for developing their learning skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Primary School teacher for 9 years.

Tutoring Approach:

Please see above in my "About myself" section.
I work with each child as an individual. As each child is different, they have a unique approach to learning that I am willing to find out and use. I have a relaxed style but we cover a lot in the time we have and I have started to see a change after a few sessions.

Personal Description:
A qualified teacher (holder of British QTS) with two Master's degree (in Polish Language and Literature, from Poznan University and in Education, from St Marys University). I work in a large High School in Harrow as an English teacher to foreign students and teach GCSE English. Furthermore I teach GCSE and A-level courses in Polish to students of varying ages and abilities, since 2010 I have taught Polish as a Foreign Language in Manchester, then in an Adult College in London.
Dealing with students from multicultural backgrounds and working with people with learning difficulties has strengthened my classroom management, student-centred methodology, empathy and perception.
I love teaching because it gives me a lot of personal and professional satisfaction as well as provides with opportunities of meeting new people and challenges.
I like reading, travelling, good films/music.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Polish since 2006-first as a teacher of Polish in Saturday Polish School in Manchester, then as a tutor of Polish language as a foreign in various institutions across the UK. Also since then, I have taught English Language and Literature in a secondary school, preparing students to GCSE/A-level exams. I teach daytime and evening courses and work as a private tutor. I have experience preparing schemes and programmes of work to allow my students to achieve their goals within a specific time frame- this includes both preparation for exams, and general leisure courses.

Tutoring Approach:

Whether you need help to prepare for your GCSEs or A-levels, need help with a specific piece of coursework or are learning languages for business or travel purposes, I will design bespoke lessons for you that will ensure that you achieve just what you need. I believe that students learn in a variety of different ways, and I will tailor my lessons so that I get the best out of you, taking into account how you like to learn.
My lessons are based on the communicative approach, where through dialogues, activation games, role plays, use of pictures and authentic material, also use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate, students are making a rapid progress. This variety allows me to turn learning into a fun activity with learning occurring almost subconsciously, which is even more effective.
I avoid boring and difficult grammar exercises as I prefer activation games. When playing them my students certainly practice grammar; but most of all, they repeat and memorise entire phrases.
Lessons are divided into themes such as telephone conversations, in the restaurant, at the airport and railway station, in the shop, asking for directions, hotel dialogues etc.
I like to incorporate elements of Polish culture and traditions too, of course; and I quite often arrange for outings to Polish restaurants in area, where my students must place their orders in Polish.

Personal Description:
I would describe myself as a very determined and highly motivated person. I do take my job seriously but I'm able to see things in perspective and believe I'm quite easy-going to work with. I'm an optimist rather than a pessimist - but I'm also a realist and I cope well when the going gets tough; I'm very good at finding solutions to problems. Above all, I would say I'm a positive and enthusiastic person - and I relish a challenge.
Careful planning is critical to my ability to get things done: planning, organisation and action. I rely heavily on 'To Do' lists. These enable me to capture and record everything which I need to action. I maintain a master To Do list but also have separate To Do lists for each particular project I'm handling. I review these at least once a day so as to identify my priorities. I always aim to focus on tasks which have deadlines attached to them and also tasks which will achieve the most in the shortest space of time. Less important items I will either postpone, delegate or, if I am unable to clearly identify the benefits, remove from the list completely. While I have a very heavy workload to juggle I find that these systems enable me to always keep one step ahead and to ensure that nothing slips through the net.

Teaching Experience:

Sep 2008 - May 2015,Private Lesson Tutor in Sciences (Mathematics-Chemistry-Physics-Biology)
Private Lesson Tutor in Greek and English
Worked with students in small groups of 3 - 4 to help develop their basic knowledge and understanding of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology
Conducted face to face and Skype lessons
Produced bespoke lesson plan based on the child's needs
Helped with completion of courseworks and assignments
Provided support for exams and test preparation
Provided regular feedback to parents and informed them about their child's progress
Worked with kids and adults of various ages

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make children feel quickly at ease with my warm, 'can-do' approach, and boost their self-esteem with lots of praise. I focus the lessons on whatever the child most needs to learn and where possible like to link in with what the child is currently learning at school. Using this approach, the child gains confidence through learning, and away from a packed classroom is able to discuss areas they feel they need to improve in an open and honest way.

Personal Description:
Hi
I am a part time primary school teacher with a love for maths.
I have two boys who are both at secondary school.
I have a chocolate Labrador called Marmite who I love to walk.
My hobbies are also dancing, baking and reading.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a qualified teacher for 22 years. I have taught every year group from Yr1- YR6. At the moment I am a 0.6 Yr1/2 class teacher at an outstanding primary school.
I have had a variety of posts during my career including a year leader, maths manager, SENCo and French specialist.
For three years I was employed by the local education authority as a maths consultant and I worked alongside teachers to improve their practice and I also wrote documents that the government produced. Three years ago I was chosen to be a leading maths teacher for the county which required me teaching colleagues;opening my doors for other teachers to watch me teach maths and to training staff in other schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is important to personalize the work I do with my pupils.
I always carry out thorough assessments when I begin working with a child and ensure that the activities I set pupils are relevant to their needs and to the skills they will need in everyday life.
My philosophy is that a child will learn if they have a positive, trusting relationship with their tutor; develop self-belief in their abilities and have fun whilst they are learning. When I am working with your child, I will provide detailed feedback on their progress as I believe that a strong relationship with parents is essential to a child's development. I will set home- learning tasks if required

Personal Description:
Recently I graduated from the University of Oxford with a 2.i in Jurisprudence (Law). After getting straight A*s at GCSE, I went on to study Maths, English Literature, Spanish, Government and Politics and General Studies at AS level. Again, after attaining the highest grades at AS, I was advised to drop Spanish and went on to complete my A levels (A*A*A*A). Currently, I am studying for an MSc at the University of Law where I am undertaking my LPC, having secured a training contract with a law firm in London.

Teaching Experience:

I tutored at my school and was Senior Prefect for Peer Mentoring, where I tutored students and worked alongside teachers to provide personalised tutoring for students who were in need of extra support.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to approach tutoring by adapting to the tutee's needs. I always ask what needs to be covered for their understanding so as to ensure that I can ascertain the tutee's objectives and what they want to gain from the session(s). It is, therefore, up to the tutee to know that they struggle on. If they do not know, I like to test their knowledge of the syllabus and fill in any gaps. When I go through a topic, I do often go through it in detail so that the tutee can not only answer questions, but also understand what they are doing. I believe the key to effect tutoring is helping a tutee to better understand the principles behind the subjects studied so that they can then adapt and apply this knowledge to give the best answers to any question that could be given on said topic.

Personal Description:
I am an outgoing, warm, and mature professional who recently moved to London from Canada to pursue more opportunities in editing and writing, while also in the search of a full-time communications/marketing role. I would like to use my previous experience and love of teaching to supplement my income as well as do more rewarding work. As an immigrant myself to whom English is not a native tongue, I have a profound appreciation for effective teaching practices that have impact on individual lives, such as the teaching of language in particular. I have always had a passion for paying forward through education, with the same dedication and passion my own teachers and tutors gave to my learning did during my first years in Canada, which eventually inspired me to pursue English, communications and media studies in my own career.

Teaching Experience:

I have more than seven years of teaching experience in a variety of formats: 4 years in private tutoring (E.S.L. ages 6-22), mathematics (ages 14-16) as well as extensive experience at the university level, both in guest lecturing (business analytics/marketing courses in the MBA and undegraduate commerce programs at the University of British Columbia) as well as two years experience working as a graduate assistant teaching class-sizes of 30-80 undergraduate students in tutorial. I also have experience developing custom content and curriculum for continuing studies/professional development courses through Simon Fraser University as well as a breadth of knowledge and acumen for working cross-culturally having been employed as a Cultural Assistant working in a Vancouver-based immersive language exchange program with high school students from Japan (MYK Enterprises). I have a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in Communications (focus: Media Studies/Publishing).

Tutoring Approach:

In my experience, I have learned to adapt my teaching approach based on the learning style of each student as determined by his or her age/level of maturity, ability, and willingness to learn. I know how to strike a balance between making learning fun while also teaching discipline through reward, as motivation is key to learning.

Personal Description:
I am currently doing my Ph.D in computer science. It focuses on the implementation of security and anonymity mechanisms. Over the years of my academic study I have worked in a variety of subjects in the field but I am mostly interested in cyber security techniques and cryptography. I have worked with programming languages such as C and Python and Assembly as well as with a variety of other tools. I am fluent in Greek and English and also proficient in research and study methodologies.

Teaching Experience:

As a private tutor, I have teaching experience in a few subjects of my field. I have the most teaching experience with cryptography, cyber security and C programming as well as English but I have also tutored in other subjects such as computer architecture, algorithms, English and some basic mathematics (mostly geometry).

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very direct approach that involves organising and presenting the information in a simplified form that is easily understood. I am also very proficient in professional study methods.
