Personal Description:
I have spent 8 years at university, completed two degrees (one of which with a Teacher-training profile) and various development courses, and have been meanwhile working to support myself financially. I have been employed as a paid English Language and Literature and ESOL Teacher and have done extensive voluntary community care of people from various cultures and backgrounds. I speak, read and write fluent English, Bulgarian and Russian and operate freely with Microsoft Packages and the Internet

My tutoring experience across two cultures consisted of learners of various ages and educational needs - from students of English as a Foreign Language (adults) to preparation for GCSE examinations (Secondary school age) and basic literacy skills for Primary school children. I have proved to be very efficient on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, always searching to find the individual approach to each student, seeking to meet their needs and interests. Some of my students successfully passed their GCSE exams, others moved up with one level in their acquisition of English. All of my primary or secondary school pupils noted progress within the area they struggled with and some moved up to 'top' groups in their respective school classes.

I am friendly and approachable and children quickly warm to me and feel they can trust me and share their problems with me. I respect each child's individual strengths. I provide for their individual needs. I find a personal approach to each child, as I recognise that their learning styles and interests differ. I have already been tutoring privately for 14 years (across two countries) and have only had positive comments from appreciative parents and students.

I enjoy tutoring adults as well. I have taught ESOL, Bulgarian and Russian to adult students.

Presently I am employed full-time as a Lecturer of ESOL to adults at Birmingham Metropolitan College but I continue to tutor privately. I have a son of 4 years, who is presently attending nursery in Rubery.

During my teaching, tutoring and voluntary community care duties I worked closely with people with various problems and needs. This has helped me develop excellent communication and problem solving skills, as well as openness and confidence. Meeting those people's different needs has also taught me to show flexibility and quickly and independently seek solutions to challenges even in unfamiliar circumstances. I successfully find an individual approach to relate to everyone. Both as a teacher and community carer I have been described as 'friendly, tolerant', 'a good communicator', and a person of punctuality, reliability and 'excellent professionalism'.

For the last 4 years I have mainly tutored clients, forwarded to me by the agency Personal Tutors but now I wish to extend my experience.

Teaching Experience:

During my other wide experience of teaching I have been exposed to various aspects of the profession. While teaching English at a Secondary College in Bulgaria I had the chance to teach English literature more extensively, which deepened my knowledge of it. I also taught English at the equivalent of an A-level in the UK, successfully preparing students for university examinations. My lessons have been described as 'interesting and inspirational'. Teaching basic Literacy, Speaking and Listening skills and Creative Writing to adults in the UK broadened my experience even more. During my various tutoring duties in Bulgaria I worked with children and young adults of various ages and educational needs, which has further enriched my teaching practice and increased my flexibility in target setting.

While employed by Harborne Hill School in Birmingham I taught English Key Stage 3 and 4 and was involved in the preparation of Year 10 for their GCSE exams. I am familiar with the British System of Secondary Education, as well as with the National Curriculum and the importance of teaching English across the curriculum. I contributed to creating schemes of work and various materials for the English department at Harborne Hill. I also widely used ICT in my lessons, as I am aware that it is very important for accelerating children's learning. All my groups had a regular weekly lesson in the ICT suite.

My lesson preparation at Harborne Hill School was described as 'exemplary' and 'outstanding', the contents as 'interesting and stimulating', and my knowledge of the subject as 'excellent'. I widely and confidently used my own initiative to prepare creative activities to suit the children's needs and appeal to their imagination (working a youth leader at St Agnes church provided me with ideas for interesting activities). I was successful in trouble-shooting and behaviour management. I was able to quickly establish personal rapport with the pupils and find an individual approach to each one. I successfully motivated them to work and reach their potential when they were reluctant to do so. I was responsible for creating individual educational plans for the SEN children and individually monitor their progress. My background interest and extensive reading in Child Psychology and Counselling helped me with this task.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a couple of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan for work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain help-book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Personal Description:
I am an honours graduate of computer science and electronics. I spent 17 years in corporate management before becoming self employed as, among other things, a freelance lecturer. I am a professional life coach and tutor for enjoyment.

Please note: I may add a travel supplement to the fee my journey to you takes ages( e.g. rush hour) or consumes lots of petrol, but you'll always know if advance and be in control.

Teaching Experience:

I taught freelance for Bedford College for 4 years, and have been tutoring for 7 years. I have qualifications in adult teaching, and my coaching qualification also helps a lot.

Tutoring Approach:

Effective tutoring is a wonderful opportunity because I can tailor what I do very specifically for the student I'm working with, and that's as much about their personality and stress levels as it is about the material we're working with. I believe in teaching understanding rather than isolated rules, it builds confidence and security and does not rely on memory. My sessions are as relaxed and fun-filled as I can possibly make them without sacrificing the learning task before us.

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. If you have any questions at all or specific enquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Personal Description:
Since graduating from Oxford University last year with a degree in Economics and Management, I have worked as a private tutor. The degree required a high level of maths. I took A-Levels in Maths, Economics, Geography and Critical Thinking, and received an A in all of these. I attended Kendrick Grammar School from the age of 11 to 18. This involved an entrance exam with both non-verbal and verbal reasoning papers. I have a good understanding of what is needed to achieve the top marks in maths and business related subjects as well as what is needed to be successful in entrance exams.

I have also just completed a post graduate degree in Global Development Challenges (University of Edinburgh, with distinction).

I have now been working as a tutor for three years and love my job. I enjoy building up a relationship with the families and students I work with and seeing a transformation in their confidence and their skills. Families I work with often joke that I have the patience of a saint!

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating, I have completed thousands of hours of tutoring in all my subjects. My students really enjoy my lessons and have been very successful. All of my 11+ students were successful this year, including Blue Coat, Kendrick, Reading Boys and The Abbey. All of my economics and maths students see a huge improvement, with the majority going on to achieve top grades (A/A*). My students often tell me that I have a way of explaining complicated things that 'just seems to make sense'.

I have spent 5 months homeschooling three children in the Bahamas and have worked with children of all ages in a wide range of roles. For 5 years I worked at my local dry ski slope as a ski instructor. This involved teaching anyone over the age of 4, and making lessons fun and relevant for them. I have learned to adapt my teaching style and to think of creative and innovative ways to teach new things. I also work with young people with special needs, which requires a great deal of patience and imagination. I am in the process of applying for various teaching courses.

I have also spent a great deal of time working with children with a variety of special needs including dyslexia and ADHD. I have had great success, particularly those with dyslexia. I aim to find imaginative and enjoyable ways to help the child and to build their self confidence in the subject.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and imaginative when it comes to teaching. I will keep finding different ways of explaining something until the person I am teaching really understands. I believe that students are much more likely to learn when they have a positive relationship with their teacher and when they are having fun.

I have several years' worth of varied experience. I am a qualified teacher of Modern Languages and currently work in a top Manchester school. Previously, I have worked full time as a tutor through some of London's top agencies, including Keystone Tutors and Enjoy Education. I have also taught translation (Italian to English) for St John's and Christ Church Colleges, Oxford, and tutored English Language, English Literature, French, Italian, Spanish and History for GCSE and A level. I have also been teaching English as a Foreign Language for over four years.

In addition, I have considerable experience teaching younger children literacy and foreign languages. I have particular experience of tutoring children who have studied in non-Anglophone environments and schools (especially French, Italian and Russian) as they prepare for examinations in English.

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe it is important to reinforce students' existing knowledge, while continuing to push the boundaries of their learning. Furthermore, I encourage a holistic approach when tutoring and entice students to see links across different fields and subjects, thereby heightening the value of their tuition and its use value.

I encourage the study of language and literature together, focusing on working very closely with particular texts while still seeing them within the broader parameters of literature as a whole. It is my belief that neither language nor literature could or should be entirely separated from the other.

With regard to language specifically, I encourage spoken and written fluency by building upon a solid framework of linguistic instruction and cultural competence. I also emphasise both the academic and practical merits of studying a foreign language.

Personal Description:
My name is Lesley, and I am passionate about English as a subject! I realy enjoy teaching and inspiring my students to not only do well but to form a love of literature too.

Teaching Experience:

I have ten years' teaching experience. I have taught English in a variety of schools and sixth form colleges to students aged 11-18 and to adult learners.

I have in turn been course leader for AS/2 Literature; GCSE English and Level 1&2 Adult English Progression.

In A-level my specialism are English Literature and the Language-Literature combined course.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a patient approach to tutoring - and am very approachable - but I expect work to be a two-way street!

I use a wide variety of resources to stimulate learning and cater for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.

I think it is really important for students to fully understand what it is that examiners are asking them in order to achieve the highest grade possible.

I always make full use of the exam boards' assessment criteria to ensure you are on the right track; you might have written a fabulous essay with lots of analysis of language - but if the exam board wants you to focus on other critical viewpoints or context as well, and you haven't, you will only be entitled to a fraction of the marks!

Personal Description:
I am a native British woman who has lived in Surrey and London all my life. My students always give excellent feedback and say I am approachable, friendly and a great teacher. I love dancing, travel, meeting new people and learning about other countries and cultures. I have a classic British accent, was educated at typical British private schools and have worked all my career helping those who have relocated to England.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English as a Foreign Language for many years to adults and young people. I have taught a large number of different nationalities for all purposes. I help students with General English, communication skills, grammar, business, conversation, pronunciation, accent, advanced skills, reading, writing, listening, cultural awareness etc.

My home is used for Home Stay so we have the pleasure of sharing our home with many different nationalities who are here to learn English.

I am qualified English teacher and teach beginners to advanced. I am also happy to teach couples or small groups of the same level.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important thing about teaching English as a Foreign Language is focusing on what the student most needs to learn. I never just follow a text book but concentrate on what is most needed by the student and to help them with their challenges. The lessons are fun and varied whilst being constructive and developmental. I am very keen to discuss with you what you most need to feel confident with the language.

I teach at home, and within various areas of Surrey and South West/Central London. You can come to my home and often I can come to you at your home, office, workplace, cafe, museum, library or park!

The price of a lesson can be split between two students of a similar level.

Personal Description:
I'm an Oxford student currently studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and am apparently really rather unreliable at responding to tutoring requests if they're sent durnig term time. So if I don't manage to respond, my apologies for that, Oxford has a way of burying things. I tend to spend most of my spare time reading, though I have little enough of that now.

Teaching Experience:

I helped with tutoring people in lower maths sets when I was in sixth form, as well as the various GCSE and Alevel tutoring I've done since I started offering my services here.

Tutoring Approach:

It can be hard for people to catch up with things they've forgotten or not understood in class, since asking to go back over something you've already covered can be embarrassing, and it's hard for the teacher to go back over something for one person. So I think that the way a tutor can be most helpful if to find specific areas where the student is having the problem, and focusing on them really understanding that area. Which means not only that they'll be able to deal with that one area, but that it will be easier for them to understand the things that build on that one thing.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher of English, and also hold a BA and PhD in English literature. In addition to my 11-18 teaching experience, I have also taught literature at undergraduate level. Up to the present, I have been working as a full-time teacher of English in a secondary school (11-18), but have recently decided to seek more flexible teaching work in order to devote more time to my growing family.

Teaching Experience:

As a secondary school teacher of English (11-18), an excellent understanding of pupils and how they learn is an essential part of my role. I have experience of teaching English at both KS3, GCSE and A-Level. As a former university tutor and academic I am also particularly equipped to help older pupils through the process of completing A-Levels and competing for University positions and employment. Overall, I feel that my extensive experience both within and without the field of English teaching equips me to help pupils achieve their fullest potential.

Tutoring Approach:

My style of teaching encourages pupils to enhance their own reading and writing skills, as well as providing essential support. I understand that different pupils have different needs and different learning styles, and I always endeavor to find an approach to teaching that will engage my particular pupil. I like variety and excitement in the lessons and tuition that I deliver, but at the same time I insist on a rigorous approach to study and especially to writing.

Personal Description:
Hi there, my name is Kirsty and I am a first year BA (Hons) English student at the University of Chichester.

English has been my favourite subject ever since primary school, and after my graduation I am planning on completing a PGCE in Education in order to teach at secondary level. For this reason, tutoring would be both a rewarding and valuable experience for me in terms of enhancing my application.

Teaching Experience:

I enjoy working with children and young adults, and have been volunteering with a local Guide group for the past year. This semester I have also ran a small 'Introduction to Grammar' session for those on my course with no previous experience of A Level English Language. I am proud to say that all my 'students' passed their exam that term with flying colours!

Tutoring Approach:

Approaching complex ideas in fun, kinesthic and memorable ways: emphasis on placing ideas within a context the pupils can relate to in order to visualise examples in the world around them. Use of PowerPoint presentations, flash cards, mind maps, audio and visual aids, look/cover/write/check activities, for instance. Developing a close rapport with the pupils through showing an interest in the pupil's own opinion of the subjects covered; exploring their concerns and difficulties so that problems can be solved quickly before motivation drops.

Personal Description:
I am 20 years old, and I am currently studying English Language and Linguistics. My native language is Greek, and English is my L2.

Teaching Experience:

I had a TEFL training course, and I have TESOL as a course at university, for 1 and a half years. These courses are mainly teaching you the best ways to teach both children and adults, but I was also taught the best approaches and methods in general teaching (reading, writing, listening and speaking skills/study skills). I also participated to a class of the age of 8-9 as a teacher assistant where I had to help the students with their reading, homework, answering their questions etc.

Tutoring Approach:

I started tutoring since high school, to my classmates whose their first language was not Greek or English and they needed help with their homework. Additionally, I was occasionally tutoring children of my relatives and friends, in order to improve their English.

Personal Description:
I'm a highly qualified primary teacher, offering individual, paired or small group tuition in English, Maths and SATs/11+test preparation to pupils in the primary age range.

I pride myself on giving quality parental feedback regarding their child`s learning after each lesson, as I find this partnership aids children`s commitment to their learning.

I live in New Barn, Longfield, Kent, and I offer tuition in one hour sessions. However, I can arrange longer sessions should they be required over school holidays.

I can tutor at your home if you are within 10 minutes drive, or you can drop your child to my home for their tuition session, where they can learn in an uninterrupted study environment.(I find children often focus better in an environment specifically set up for them away from their home).

Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher since 1996.
I have a thorough understanding of all aspects of teaching and learning as I have been a SENCO, Leader of Teaching and Learning, Deputy Head and Headteacher in my time, and have taught and planned curriculum progression and programmes of study for all year groups, from YR to Y6.

Tutoring Approach:

My beliefs and values about learning:

I am a successful primary school teacher of more than 15 years experience, having taught children from YR (aged 4 and 5) through to Y6 (aged 10 and 11). Also, as an ex-Headteacher, I understand how children need tailored facilitation of their learning experiences to really thrive.

I believe that all children deserve the chance to `be` their personal best, and understand that some children need a little more encouragement and nurturing in this respect than others. For me, teaching is a real vocation. I enjoy finding the `key` to unlock the love of learning within each individual, and gain great satisfaction from seeing a child take hold of this key themselves and become an increasingly independent learner.

Children learn in different ways, and need different things from their learning experiences. Some may gain benefit in completing familiar written exercises to reinforce their learning, while others may need to activate other senses, move about, sing a song, dance, or use some other physical resource to support their understanding. I try to work within a child`s dominant learning style, while gently exploring and developing other independent learning skills, in order to eventually add more `tools` to a child`s learning toolbox. This fun and individually tailored approach enables the child to develop skills and habits which helps them see learning positively, as an interesting challenge, rather than a chore.

In addition to having this strong focus on developing a learner`s confidence in themselves and their ability, I also acknowledge that education is a competitive business nowadays. In some areas, children are tested for admittance to `selective` secondary schools (via `11+`tests), and of course, every parent wants what is best for their child. I am able to support a child in getting to grips with the sometimes confusing elements of these tests, by familiarising them with the kinds of questions that might be asked and working with them on developing techniques and strategies to support them in the tests.

I have been CRB checked (enhanced) and my clearance is available for scrutiny for prospective parents prior to tutoring commencing.
