Personal Description:
I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Education forms the foundation for freeing us from bigotry and ignorance, makes us better people and permits us to live richer, better lives. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I used to work as a research physicist at Cambridge University in an indefinable capacity. I had several years of poor physical health (fit and healthy now) that made funding an issue, so I was an unofficial PhD student researching quantum computing and foundational issues in physics.

I have always have had a dual interest in the arts and philosophy, literature in particular. I've written a novel and several full length plays as well as directing at the student theatre in Cambridge and making short films. I recently decided to form my own film production company and work full time as a writer and director for films and plays. Our first short film is in production and we are applying for funding for a feature.

I'd say my approach to education is rigorous, highly intellectual and what one might term renaissance in approach. I'm interested in all aspects of education, and how our disparate academic disciplines connect which is somewhat antithetical to the modern approach to education but just the sort of thing one needs to get into Oxbridge and the like.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible, regardless of their ability; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

I have tutored many (over 100) students privately over the past six years, improving their results in all cases where the students have followed my advice and worked hard

I have experience of teaching children as young as five through to graduates and am happy to work one to one, in small groups or in a classroom.

I also help set up and run and small charity to improve the educational standards of recent immigrants in inner city London where I taught all ages of students.

For example, the tutee could show me some coursework he/she is doing and we could go through it and see what English skills need to be practised. Teaching Experience:

My PGCE year showed me different ways to teach children and emphasised being flexible and adaptable to the individual needs to every child. I incorporate this into my teaching practice on a daily basis and have managed to get it down to an art for tuition too.

During my final year at university, I decided to take on the role of note taker/tutor to a visually impaired first year PPE student. This helped me to fully appreciate the art of communication because I had to learn new techniques to implement when typing up mathematical notation and complicated economic expressions. This aided my organisational and time keeping skills as I had to complete my final year studies simultaneously. I undertook this role so that I could enhance my listening and communication skills. But I finished this role having understood the intricacies of teaching Mathematics to someone who has difficulty due to a disability. I was a successful tutor and my work was valued highly but my greatest achievement within this role was ensuring that the student understood what I taught. Carrying out this enriching role meant I saw the student decipher the complex and challenging mathematics and this confirmed teaching as a career choice.

I decided to use the summer of 2010 fulfilling one of my dreams by working with vulnerable children from underprivileged backgrounds in one of the world's fastest developing nations: India. I taught Mathematics and English to Secondary School students using my Hindi language skills to communicate and ensure that the children understood everything that I was trying to convey. I fulfilled this voluntary role for a period of 3 months and it gave me a very deep insight into what a career in teaching would be like. I travelled 18km on a daily basis but I was happy to give up my time during the week and on the weekend in order to teach or invigilate exams. I was committed to sharing my knowledge and giving the best of myself. This experience showed me that it is important to keep thinking and learning new things in order to be a successful teacher. I created teaching plans before each lesson and took advice from the Head Master and my colleagues which meant that I was able to develop at a rapid pace. I recognise that I still have much to learn but I am ready for the next challenge which awaits me. This experience was heart rendering and left me feeling fulfilled in a way I have never felt before.

I have taught over 30 pupils over the last few years. This has ranged from several A level pupils, several GCSE pupils and a handful of primary school pupils. I have also taught university students in Economics. I have taught both male and female students from varying ages. Pupils tend to find that they gel with me quite well compared to previous tutors they've had.

My students notice a difference in their progress within a very short amount of time because I genuinely care about helping them to get the most out of their potential. One of my languages' students has seen a rapid increase in a matter of weeks in terms of her spoken and written work. All of my Economics' students have seen particularly quick progression in terms of analytical and evaluation skills.

I am a hard working and conscientious tutor - I take my work very seriously and I am committed to helping students perform exceptionally well. The feeling I get from seeing a student finally understand a concept is the greatest feeling in the world. However, I don't take myself too seriously and am very easy to get on with.

Overall - I can help with routine homework, assignments, exam preparation, more focused revision, improving memory and making subjects fun and relatable!

Tutoring Approach:

I plan things and I like to identify a student's weaknesses so that I can help them to kick the demons and enjoy a subject in a way they never have done before. I think making the base of any subject strong is essential and means that a student can develop quicker. I also know that it's important not to overload students with too much information so I make things manageable and progress tends to be very fast :)

We work on Language skills such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in ESOL lessons with plenty of practice for tests if needed and when studying literature at a higher level, I encourage my tutees to relate what they are reading to current issues and events in the world so that it is relevant and interesting for them. Personal Description:
I have been involved in the education of children for forty years. Sixty one years old and still fresh, because I love what I do, which is to guide young people to find them selves. I am the slightly bemused father of four young adults and the proud owner of two beautiful dogs. I love poetry, the cinema, the theatre and gardening. Life needs to be enjoyed not avoided. I suppose I want to make the most of my time and see others do the same. For me teaching has always been a vocation which made me feel alive, with the sense of adventure, knowing I was engaged in something special. It's what I felt when I first started in the profession and I still feel it as keenly now.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working at the Open Academy for the past three years, primarily teaching English and Maths GCSE foundation level. I have also taught classes in Drama and History which is a particular favourite of mine. Prior to that, I have been working at various High Schools teaching a range of subjects up to GCSE level. I formally retired from my Head of English and Drama post at a well known Prep School in Norwich in 2007, but missed the experience of teaching so much I enrolled as a supply teacher in 2008 and I have not stopped since.

Tutoring Approach:

Confidence is at the root of all success and I believe strongly, that it is the first task of any teacher to instil confidence in their pupils. Once that is achieved, then anything is possible.

I have recently returned to the UK after a number of years of teaching overseas, mainly in schools in the Arabian Gulf. I began teaching in the mid-1970's, so have a wealth of experience of a range of educational qualifications. I also have experience in managing schools, up to and including at Principal level.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my career, I have always taught English Language and Literature, mostly to Secondary age students, covering O and A Levels, GCSE and IGCSE, as well as TOEFL, IELTS and US SATs. I have taught large classes in UK secondary schools, as well as small groups in international schools. My students have frequently succeeded up to and beyond their expectations at all levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that one-to-one tutoring helps, above all, to encourage and support a young person, who may be feeling that they are not succeeding in their school studies. I prefer to tutor in the student's home environment as this helps in boosting his or her confidence. I have tutored many students throughout my career, and I would say that my approach is demanding but fair.
