Personal Description:
I'm a freelance translator with an MA in Literary Translation from Exeter University. I originally graduated in Spanish and German from Kent University in 2002, after which I travelled around Europe and worked for some time in London as a PA at the Chartered Institute of Linguists. I love anything to do with languages and would like to continue to my involvement in education.

Teaching Experience:

After graduating, I spent a year teaching English in Spain and London (all levels to both children and adults), and for three years I worked as a Saturday morning Spanish teacher for children aged 5-11. I've also done some voluntary work in primary schools working with children with difficulties in Literacy, and am currently doing some private tuition in GCSE Spanish and GCSE German. In the past, I have also tutored GSCE English Literature and beginners' Spanish for adults.

Tutoring Approach:

After the tutee lets me know what areas he/she would prefer to work on, I can prepare some relevant material and build on that: I have plenty of books, CDs, sheets and Internet material! I am keen to let the tutee work at his/her own pace and not feel overloaded with information, although it is also important to feel challenged. Particularly for children's lessons, I would be using games and pictures. I aim for the lessons to be relaxed and enjoyable and would hope that the tutee feels comfortable and encouraged, and not awkward about making mistakes.

Personal Description:
With 8 years experience in personal coaching and tutoring, I am widely read in areas such as literature, philosophy, religion, science & current affairs. Interests include badminton, travel, films and keeping fit, healthy and happy.

I love learning, in all the forms that can take - and my passion is to encourage and facilitate others in the joy of continual learning

Teaching Experience:

Professional certified Life Coach and successful university graduate (1st class hons) with additional masters research degree. Taught at Secondary level and now several successful years tutoring especially English and Maths for most ages and stages, and passionate about encouraging the potential I see in each of my students.

Also a regular public speaker leading seminars on themes ranging from stress-management and communication skills, to enhancing personal confidence and self fulfilment.

Tutoring Approach:

Combining motivational coaching techniques, I offer a fully engaging and personalised education. While encouraging the student to adopt high yet achievable targets for their own eduction, I am also sensitive to the level of each student and what he or she is ready to adopt.

"Motivational Tutoring" is the name I have given this unique service. As my many positive references will show, this has a proven method of success. I approach each student and the sessions with an open-mind - taking into consideration what I must learn in order to be of real help. With my many areas of interest outside education, I pride myself in an ability to engage my students at their level and within their current areas of interest. My reward is seeing students succeed in their studies as well as developing their own personal skills and confidence.

AREAS COVERED / WHAT TO EXPECT

I help primary, secondary, university/college and mature students with reading, spelling, comprehension and every area of Maths up to GCSE. Alongside the specific subjects I tutor in, I can incorporate motivational coaching on exam and essay skills. This will ensure maximum value for your investment of time, effort and money

For English or Maths I the first lesson will consist of a complimentary educational assessment (usually 30 minutes) to help identify key areas for improvement . All results shared with the parent/guardian. Based on this initial assessment, a 100% individual programme of learning is tailored for your child.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate in English, German and Politics with an International House qualification to teach English as a foreign language to adults.

I am fluent in German and well informed about German life and culture, having taught and studied in the German-speaking world (Upper Austria and Lower Saxony) for 9 years. I have a working knowledge of other major European languages and like to think of myself as an enthusiastic European with a keen interest in global affairs.

For the last 12 years I have been engaged on a university research and publishing project, based in London and Cambridge, that charts the reception of British and Irish authors in Europe, from Francis Bacon to James Joyce.

A significant part of my professional role involves editing and proof-reading academic texts, and I'm happy to undertake this for tutees.

I am also a freelance researcher, writer and curator of exhibitions on contemporary social and political cartoons. I co-edited the bilingual catalogue 'Coping with the Relations: Deutsch-britische Karikaturen von den Fünfziger bis zu den Neunziger Jahren', and co-authored the book 'Deutschland und seine Nachbarn: Briten, Franzosen, Niederländer und Polen blicken auf Deutschland'; both designed as educational resources.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students in English, German and Politics for the last 5 years, as well as working as a business language trainer in firms in the City and West End.

Previously I taught English, German and Politics in England (GCSE and A-level), and English as a foreign language at all levels in grammar schools in Austria and Germany. I also taught English as a foreign language to trainee German teachers of English and for Academic & Special Purposes (law, business studies, social sciences) as well as British cultural studies at the University of Osnabruck, Germany, for 8 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience, appropriate pace and empathetic attention to an individual's learning needs are essential for anyone helping others to understand often complex ideas and concepts. I also believe successful learning results from both the learner's and teacher's motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject. These are principles that inform my role as a tutor.

I much prefer one-to-one or small-group tutoring, particularly where if a foreign language is involved. I believe the intensity of experience such interaction provides is the next best thing to direct engagement with a foreign language in the context in which it is naturally spoken. This is borne out by my own experience as a foreign-language learner.

I am a qualified 1 to 1 Tutor, a trained Early Years Practitioner and an experienced Teacher. I have a Masters Degree in English. I have two children, 8 and 13, and I love working with children.

Teaching Experience:

I have 2 years teaching experience as a Special Support Assistant and over 7 years experience as Class Teacher and Private Tutor. I am a qualified 1 to 1 school tutor with over five years home-tutoring experience, having worked with children between the ages of 7 and 16, in english, maths and science.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy 1 to 1 tutoring as this allows me to focus more precisely on the particular learning styles and needs of the child under my supervision, allowing for more effective, concentrated delivery of lessons and thereby the attainment of better results in a shorter time. Personal Description:
I am currently a third year medical student from the University of Newcastle but I have also graduated in Human Sciences from the University of Durham back in 2007. During the holidays I live in London. I have a wealth of experience working with children and teenagers from being a Christmas grotto host at Harrods to volunteering at Great Ormond Street Hospital for over a year.

My work ethic when I was younger was not as disciplined as it is now and I am aware of the difficulties that students can face when it comes to learning new concepts and hope to help tutees overcome these barriers.

Having applied to grammar school, university and medical school I am aware of all the application processes and interviewing processes.

I am outgoing and to keep active I play hockey for my local club and my university college.

Teaching Experience:

I have helped younger family members to grasp ideas and offer new ways of learning if they were struggling. I have had job roles in the past training new employees up and feel this is a mode of teaching.

I would like to extend my higher knowledge to helping students achieve top grades in their GCSE's and A-levels

Within my current course we have peer to peer teaching which has proved to be a very effective learning tool.

Tutoring Approach:

Different individuals have different learning styles, I for one am more visual. I would try to get an understanding of how the tutee learns best, and encourage them to engage in activities that would help them. For instance, if they are visual learners then get them to draw things out.

Encouragement and patience is of great importance and listening to the needs of the individual.

My role as a tutor would be to guide and encourage the tutee to reach their educational and professional goals.

Personal Description:
I am 30 years old and living in the centre of Wakefield with my wife. I have an interest in sports and the environment. I studied Environmental Science with Primary School Education at Bretton Hall College and love the challenge of teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching since 2004 when I qualified. I worked for 5 years at 2 schools in Barnsley. Recently I have worked at a number of Wakefield schools, gaining experience of teaching through all year groups from Lower Foundation to Year 6. I have worked in 1 to 1 situations with children preparing for SATs exams and also run intervention groups which has given me the experience of planning effectively for children at all levels of attainment and with challenging behaviour and learning needs. I have experience of running Reading Recovery sessions which help children to catch up with reading skills if they are behind.

Tutoring Approach:

I have vast experience of tutoring both in School and in the home. I run tutoring sessions that are start by recapping the work done in previous sessions, showing the child the next step and giving them the opportunity to practice the next step for themselves. I try to make the sessions fun so that the child does not get bored in the sessions and so that they look forward to the next session.

Personal Description:
I am currently at university studying an aerospace engineering degree and have had industrial experience working with Rolls-Royce.

I am a bright, happy young man. I will ensure that my tutee ensures their weaknesses become strengthen as quickly as possible and their understanding of the subject is even beyond their curriculum.

I am highly motivated throughout my studies and will also mirror this onto my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

As for my academia, my maths and sciences are at their top of their game. I am currently studying aerospace engineering and have experience in tutoring a level students with especially their maths. I have also done peer mentoring before and understand how to cope with subjects at school.

I have much experience as a martial artist. I have been training since the age of 5, and represent the UK around the world in international competitions. I am currently both gold and bronze medallist.

Tutoring Approach:

I first need to acquire the tutee's weaknesses. From there I can work on their problems and encourage them to work at them. I have more than enough resources which I still have from my secondary school.

At anytime the student requires help, they can contact me on my number, this is to allow them to have support all the time.

My strengthens lie within the sciences and maths.

Personal Description:
As an educator and enthusiastic learner I always aim to engender a love for learning in those that I work with, regardless of level or subject. I have a strong background in education as a participant, lecturer and mentor working primarily with older students although through my experiences as a hockey and swimming coach I have worked with individuals from the age of five upwards. I am a published writer and qualified journalist with excellent language skills which are directly transferable to all elements of education.

As a motivated individual, I aim to get all students to want to achieve and perform academically to the best of their ability.

Teaching Experience:

I completed my Professional Graduate Certificate in Education with the University of Bedfordshire in 2012 whilst working as a full time lecturer in further and higher education where I volunteered for one year and taught for two. During this time I was personal tutor to 60 Level 3 students, and responsible for their welfare and setting their educational goals. I also taught various subjects, including functional skills maths and English, covered lessons with students from different academic levels and provided support lessons to students as they completed coursework.

I have also worked with children from the age of three upwards through my experiences as a swimming teacher and coach, and have worked with groups of performance athletes on honing specific skills. The range of children I have worked with through all educational experiences require communication to be adapted and different teaching methods to be used, all of which I am competent at and able to use in all manner of settings.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to provide an individual approach to learning depending on the learning style and preferences of the individual. I firmly believe that students should be involved in the learning process to improve retention and understanding of information and help them apply everything learnt practically. My aim is not for students to retain information simply for the purpose of passing an exam or completing coursework - it is to help students gain an understanding of a subject so it benefits them through life. Through my experiences as a teacher I have found the words of Confucius to be true of the learning process: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."

Personal Description:
I have an MA in Medieval History from King's College London and a BA(Hons) from Queen Mary University of London. I am currently employed as a Humanities teacher an an independent college in Croydon. I have a passion for history, and love to read and write. I am also very sporty, and am interested in football, swimming and eventing.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work as a Humanities teacher - specialising in History - at an SEBD college in Croydon. I currently teach years 7-13 in small groups and one-on-one sessions. Outside of this I have tutored groups of pupils at AS and A level in History and Literacy Skills. For those studying at university level, I have tutoring experience with those who are studying Medieval topics, and have provided essay writing technique sessions and proof-reading. I specialise in SEN although have experience beyond this.

I am also a sports coach, and have experience in teaching children and adults in netball and horse riding. This has given me a different perspective when it comes to working with both groups of different ages, and groups of differing abilities. I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed, all that is needed is the correct guidance.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring History I believe that having access to primary texts and a comprehension of background issues of the topic are paramount to achieving an understanding of history. Primary texts allow students an insight into the ways contemporaries thought/behaved, which then allows a greater insight into the background issues surrounding the topic.

There is no right or wrong answer in history, and I think believe this is an element which needs to be stressed, particularly to students studying history at school. Many students feel pressurised to relate just the 'facts' of history, and are not encouraged to read further into issues and interpret this independently. I think that history needs to be made more accessible to students, particularly to those below GCSE level. When tutoring, I try to make it fun and interesting, and encourage independent thinking. History is not just the 'boring facts of our past' but a bloody, engaging, thought-provoking formation of our present.

When tutoring English Literature, I try to help students understand the text as a whole. This is vital as without this knowledge, the intricacies cannot be fully comprehended or portrayed effectively within an essay. Once again, I try to make tutoring this subject interactive and engaging, relating it to issues relevant to today, and encouraging students to think independently.

Personal Description:
I graduated with a 2:1 in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic from Cambridge University in 2010. The course included modules in history, politics, literature, and religious studies, as well as Arabic language. I spent the third year of my studies living in Damascus, Syria, and speak the Syrian dialect, as well as having a solid grounding in Modern Standard grammar.

My A-levels were in English Literature, Philosophy & Ethics, French, and History (AAAB), and I also took an AS-level in Spanish (A). I have lived in France and Spain and speak both French and Spanish to a high level of fluency. I was also raised bilingual with English and Italian.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to tutoring family friends in Italy over the summer holidays (in English), I've exchanged English and Spanish lessons for Arabic lessons. I also taught English to two groups of 20+ Arab teenagers at a high school in Israel from September - December 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in cultivating a vigorous work ethic in students, which is best done through close supervision and encouragement. The work covered will involve both the curriculum required by the student's course as well as helpful extras tailored to the student's abilities and personality. I will provide these extras to increase the student's understanding of the subject and help him/or her reach a standard of excellence that will be noticed by teachers and examiners alike.

I find the most common problem students have is not with the subject itself, but with the teacher or the insufficient attention they get in the classroom. A stress-free but diligent approach will allow us to build trust, which will give the student renewed confidence in his or her abilities. Students who push themselves with me will be rewarded for their hard work by realising that the subject they once dreaded is actually really enjoyable when approached from a new angle.

Personal Description:
Arts enthusiast with incisive critical engagement skills. Able to draw from a very wide range of critical theories when analysing arts and performance related texts. A big fan of film, theatre, music, comics, football and comedy.

Teaching Experience:

I graduated from Royal Holloway in 2011 with the highest degree grade of the academic year. I was approached by many of my co-students to advise them on essays and creative work and was employed by the Drama department to run workshops for prospective students. I've since worked as a freelance drama practitioner having led workshops with a wide spectrum of people from 10 to 70 years old.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to spread a love and enthusiasm for arts and humanities subjects and how they are good for personal as well as academic development. I can find ways to relate the work to the students own experiences. I'm a good problem solver, I'm able to pinpoint areas that need attention, particularly in essay and presentation work. I'm a natural entertainer but always maintain focus on the task at hand.

I am a very positive person and have full empathy with students barriers to learning.
I am friendly and approachable and like to aim to raise student self-esteem and attitude to learning, focusing on positive recognition of achievements and constructive reinforcement of learning strategies.

I work just as easily with adults as I do with children.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 30 years of teaching experience teaching from pre schoo level up to GCSE level and adult learning for returning to work.

I also teach children within the care system who have missed a lot of the early building blocks through lack of education as opposed to lack of ability. This also includes overcoming huge barriers to learning !

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to develop an individual learning strategy to accomodate the students learning style and empower them to achieve and gain confidence through a positive learning programme suited to their individual style and needs.

Personal Description:
I have just finished a PhD in Medieval History at the University of Cambridge, studying at King's College. I love the fact that history exercises not only historical methodologies, but also utilises language skills, literary analysis and many study skills. When not researching history, I sing in choirs and operettas.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught both at undergraduate level, in one-on-one and group situations, and at primary level. My undergraduate teaching includes lecturing, seminars on religion across the ages and the role of women in medieval Latin texts, and supervisions relating to early medieval European and Irish history. I have also helped teach primary aged children reading and writing skills when they were having difficulties in the classroom. My experience is therefore very varied, ranging from teaching young children with their own difficulties to the brightest undergraduates in the country.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is very much student led. I believe it is of the utmost importance to encourage a student to express their own thoughts and ideas, led by the questioning of their tutor. It is very important to establish a good rapport between student and tutor, in order that communication will be at its best, and a student will always feel comfortable enough to say when they do not understand. One-to-one tutoring is perfect for this approach.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic and approachable teacher, currently in my second year of primary teaching, wanting to help any children who need some extra support, or are in need of more of a challenge.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently a primary school teacher in the Nottinghamshire area. As I completed a four year bachelor of education degree, as well as the 2 years I have spent teaching, I have a thorough understanding of the National curriculum and age-related expectations. At the moment I am a full time teacher in year five, but I have also had experience in other year groups. I have also completed tutoring, within the school in which I teach, for reading comprehension. I would say that my strongest area is maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that it is important to work out and assess where your child is at, and to check for any misconceptions, before developing and extending their understanding. In recent tutoring experience, I found boosting the child's confidence is
key to them progressing and feeling more comfortable with the subject.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD student in Theatre Studies of German / British origin with experience in teaching drama (in theory and practice), literature, and English / German as Foreign Language to younger and adult learners.

As a native speaker of both English and German, I have experience in teaching cross-culturally, developing language and cultural skills with non-native learners. I am particularly enthusiastic about facilitating access to different cultures and art forms, and developing learner's critical and creative skills in the process.

Teaching Experience:

Over the past three years, I have taught in Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow and have recently begun working as a private tutor. My role as a tutor encompasses facilitating knowledge acquisition, critical learning skills, practical performance skills, and writing skills.

Prior to working at the University of Glasgow, I worked as a lecturer in English as a Foreign Language at the Nordakademie (Elmshorn). Next to teaching basic and advanced language skills, I also taught students English for business purposes and basic academic writing skills. Since moving to Scotland, I have returned to the Nordakademie every year to act as an external examiner during their oral exam week.

I have taught drama in schools (years 9 & 10 at Gymnasium Blankenese, Hamburg) and to school-aged students for theatre companies (students aged 14 - 20, for Backstage at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg).

During my training as a foreign language teacher at the Hamburg School of English I taught english to lower and upper intermediary classes of students aged 15 - 18.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in tailoring tuition to the learner's needs; this means balancing exercises and teaching approaches geared at building enthusiasm and highlighting real-world application with the demands made by exams and curricula.

One-on-one tutoring should not just rehash materials from the class room, it gives tutors the opportunity to relate teaching material to the interests of the tutee making it more meaningful to them.
While tutoring, I often use my theatre background to design exercises that are fun and engaging while at the same time being efficient in terms of learning outcomes and objectives.
