Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified teacher with Cambridge MA, PGCE & DELTA, with 30 years' experience of teaching in a variety of contexts including general secondary school English and Drama, GCSE, A Level, IB, and tuition at university and postgraduate level, including assistance with theses and similar.
I have considerable experience of TEFL/TOEFL and a successful record in teaching Cambridge FCE, CPE, etc as well as Business English classes for non-native professionals.
I recently returned to the UK from Spain for family reasons and I am new to the York area. I'm taking time out for a while to write that elusive million-seller or sitcom! Meanwhile I am a member of SfEP and work part time as a professional proofreader and copy editor. I am very happy to help groups or individuals with their academic needs.

Teaching Experience:

15 years in all key stages of secondary school education in England.
5 years Adult Education, TEFL and private tuition in the UK.
10 years teaching a British curriculum in an international secondary school in Spain at all key stages incl. GCSE, A Level and IB.
Group and individual EFL classes for children and adults, including Business English for professionals and TOEFL in an American-affiliated college.
I have an excellent record of success in preparing students for English and Drama exams - GCSE, A Level, International Baccalaureat and beyond - as well as for Cambridge First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency in English.
Amongst other notables, I was employed as personal tutor to the actress Rebecca Hall as a child and also to one of Tony Blair's sons!

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in a supportive approach and a friendly relationship, but without forgetting it's work: you're paying me because I can improve your (or your children's) future prospects.

Personal Description:
I specialize in helping students who have found it hard to fit in with normal class room life. My background in psychotherapy and counselling helps me build rapport and bring out the best in students who have had emotional problems at school.
I am concerned with education of the whole person, rather than cramming in knowledge just to get through that exam.

I teach poetry at the Ashmolean Museum, a branch of Oxford University, and bring a depth of understanding to my work with people from nine to ninety. I have four grown up children.

Teaching Experience:

BA Hons. PGCE 1974. I have taught in primary and secondary schools, as well as sixth form colleges and universities, including Oxford and the London School of Economics.. I have also taught in private schools and been a director of a school of counselling and psychotherapy. I have taught psychology at Abingdon and Witney College, and poetry in many Oxfordshire Schools. I teach poetry short courses for Oxford University at the Ashmolean museum. I teach both GCSE and IGCSE courses.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always do my best to help a student improve their exam performance, using my wide knowledge of psychology and counselling/coaching skills, as well as my subject knowledge. I most enjoy working with students who want to gain a deeper understanding of their subjects that will be of use to them in their real lives, rather than just to get through an exam. I am very good at building a rapport with students, and finding a way to bring the best out of their skill set.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher of English with many years of study, research and training in some of the world's top universities. My qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in English Literature and the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in English, including Media Studies and Drama. My Initial Teacher Training covered all aspects of English and all abilities in the 11-18 age range. My interests, of benefit to many students especially at university level, include Critical Theory, Classical Literature, and African Literature. I have guided many students doing research and proof-read their dissertations. I have also taken the official training for one-to-one tutors rolled out by the government to complement classroom teaching. I also have experience as a GCSE English examiner for Edexcel and gained the status of Senior Examiner serving as Team Leader from the June 2013 exam series.

Teaching Experience:

My first teaching appointment came in 1988 in Cameroon where I taught English and African Literature, becoming an 'A' Level examiner for the Cameroon GCE examination board in 1990. I later took the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) leading to the PGCE, finishing my last year as Education Student of the Year in my university and receiving a national commendation for the quality of my work. I have since taught in different schools in Kent and Medway, preparing students for exams such as Functional Skills, IELTS, GCSE, 'A' Level, IB and AEA. I have also given one-to-one tuition to looked-after teenagers under a government scheme as well as taught in a secure unit for which, in addition to enhanced disclosure CRBs, I was vetted over a six month period. My first long-term (over 3 months) supply position involved teaching GCSE English, 'A' Level English Literature, and the IB. Most of my teaching has been in selective (grammar) schools. I have also given English lessons in my local community as part of an outreach programme organised for speakers of other languages by my church where I teach Bible Studies also.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to establish the needs of the students and carefully review all available assessment records. If the student is preparing for a special exam such as the GCSE, I would start by ensuring that the student is aware of the full requirements of the exam and establish a clear plan to cover these. Alongside any such programme, I believe strongly in incorporating the fundamentals of English grammar which are sometimes overlooked in formal teaching settings. I like to build a good rapport with the student so that they are comfortable revealing possible areas of weakness that we could turn into strengths.

Personal Description:
Hi. I am a qualified secondary teacher and I specialise in English and Maths 1-2-1 tuition, from primary (KS1 and KS2) to GCSE level (KS3 and KS4) My teaching degree was completed successfully at Manchester Metropolitan University which is an 'outstanding' teacher training course provider who received a 'Grade 1' by Ofsted in 2010. I am quite flexible with regards to the times I can offer for the private tuition sessions. I am currently contracted to work in schools through Kirklees doing 1-2-1 tuition with children from Years 7-11.

I am a fully qualified teacher and hold PGCE & QTS (qualified teacher status) I am also a registered member of the GTC (general teaching council) and a member of ATL 'The Association of Teachers and Lecturers' and also the 'NASUWT'

Teaching Experience:

I have had an extensive range of experience teaching across many different schools in West Yorkshire. I have taught at KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5 levels in schools around West Yorkshire. I have also worked with special needs (SEN) children in schools across the Kirklees area. The work was very rewarding and this made me not only work harder but also allowed me to enjoy the work I was doing, this really motivated me in all aspects of my teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

As a teacher, I feel that any child who is lacking academically in their general work or their confidence needs to have some sort of additional help to equip them with the knowledge and skills which will be essential for them to use in the future. One to one tuition will allow your child to develop their understanding in areas of Maths and English which they might have found difficult to understand in school. It will also allow myself to help your child in specific areas of Maths or English which they don't feel confident with. I will try my utmost best to gather information about your child prior to them starting the tuition sessions such as gathering their reports from school and also their test and exam grades to help me identify their areas of weakness.

Personal Description:
I am a part-time student working towards a PhD in a subject encompassing English literature, philosophy and film studies. I am passionate about and engaged with these subjects in all their aspects and especially enthusiastic about using my knowledge of each and sharing and communicating ideas with people on all levels, within and outside an academic setting. I have previously studied towards an MA in Contemporary Literature and BA in English Literature with Philosophy and Ethics at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University respectively, during which I experienced and benefited from exposure to a multitude of approaches and interpretations of these subjects, in my own research as well as from tutors and fellow students. I am also fluent in French, having lived in Belgium as a child; as a result, I am very conscious of how I and others translate our ideas into words, interested in the process of developing self-expression and understanding, as well as able to adapt quickly and effectively.

Teaching Experience:

Over the course of my studies, and particularly over the last year, I have participated in and taught BA and MA level seminars, including co-teaching a second year undergraduate module in English Literature, for which I lectured, led seminars, marked coursework, and held tutorials with individual students. I have also tutored a student studying towards professional accreditation as a Chartered Surveyor in English, going over their written work and coaching them for their presentations.

Tutoring Approach:

I am primarily interested in establishing what the student expects and hopes to gain from tuition, in understanding their knowledge of and approach to the subject and in collaborating to develop it further, as well as creating a shared space into which I can bring in other ideas. I feel that defining and developing a sophisticated and highly personal approach to a subject is the most important aspect of education, for both academic achievement and in relating your studies to your life as a whole, and this is what I want to encourage; my own adaptability, interest in communicating ideas, and thorough knowledge of these subjects allow me to pick up on strengths and weaknesses in different approaches and to help them to realise their potential in relating them to established ideas and practices.

Personal Description:
I am a dynamic, enthusiastic and hard working tutor with a love for English language and literature. I graduated in July 2012 from Cambridge University with a degree in English, specialising in modernist literature and ancient and renaissance tragic drama. I have 5 A Levels in English, French, History, Politics and General Studies and I can read and speak French at an intermediate level.

I now work for the BBC in the Drama Commissioning department and am looking to tutor in my spare time.
My hobbies include reading, writing, visiting museums and galleries, watching modern theatre and socialising.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for one year and have had coached several pupils through their English Literature A-Levels across three different exam boards and all of varying standards. My proudest achievement this year was one of my students receiving an A Grade, brought up from a C Grade at AS Level, and going to her chosen university as a result.

While I was at school I was part of the tutoring and mentoring scheme, and helped to tutor pupils aged 11-13 in extra French classes and homework classes which I really enjoyed. As part of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh qualification I volunteered at my local Sunday School where I taught children aged 8-14.

I also represented the school as a Charity Volunteer on a trip to the Gambia, where I taught classes of 30 children aged 4-11 in all subjects, including English, Maths, Music, Art and Sport. It was a great experience to teach such a wide range of pupils and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I tutor pupils aged 11-18 in English language or literature and in particular prefer teaching in order to prepare for GCSEs or A-Levels. I would also be happy to tutor pupils at degree level in English literature, whether this is helping with dissertations and assignments, or helping gain a deeper understanding of the subject through additional reading and lecture notes.

I tutor one-on-one and am happy to be very flexible on style depending on the pupil's needs. Ideally I would want to work through their current syllabus and help with any problems and queries, as well as doing some additional work and reading around the subjects that interest the pupil.

As I work full time I would need to tutor at evenings and weekends, and can be flexible on days. I would be happy to tutor for 1 or 2 hours however often the pupil wanted. I live in North West London and work in central London, so would like to tutor pupils based in a similar area (Kentish Town, Camden Town, Euston, Fitzrovia)

Personal Description:
I am a 17 year old girl who is currently studying her AS Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and French.
I have completed my GCSE`s and gained 2Astar`s, 7A`s and 3B`s and I am predicted 4A`s in my AS Levels.
I enjoy socialising with friends and family alike but also have a passion for learning and hope to go further into the field of Chemistry, such as Chemical Engineering, Forensic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.

I hope to see some of you soon!

Teaching Experience:

I have never tutored before but I often help younger members in my family with advice and help on their work and school worries, by sharing my personal experiences and I aim to get them to achieve their full potential and to find a pathway which they have a passion for at an early age.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutors and students should always have good communication and the way to do that is to build a solid foundation between each other by listening and aiding in a proactive way, rather than forcing a student to learn something.
I understand that all students learn in different ways and believe that I am versatile enough to adapt to their ways and try a range of activities with them to help them grasp their full ability.

I am professional but approachable, and aim to create a relaxed but vigorous approach to the subjects taught. I aim to help you with your studies, not to challenge your weaknesses and to refresh but to remind you of the ways in which to tackle the subject you need help with. I use diverse methods of teaching with a multi-media approach and will always work with you to find the best way in which you learn. No two students are the same and I approach each separate tuition job with that ethos - your needs are paramount and I will work with you to ensure that the way we approach your learning is the best for you. I want to challenge your expectations of your own ability and let you achieve far more than you expected but also give you the comfort of reconfirming what you already know and to extend this base.

Personal Description:
Having literature forced upon us by the curriculum from an early age isn't perhaps the best way to endear it to us, but I have always found if those who teach it to us truly love and engage with the subject then this passion will be passed onto students.

I have always enjoyed writing and reading, and it was my love of these seemingly simple activities that led me to study English Literature with Journalism and News Media at university. I gained a scholarship and bursary to go to university, and upon graduation I was awarded the university's program prize for achieving the highest mark in three modules. It was always impressed upon me throughout my life that I must gain the highest grades possible, and throughout my education I have done so. Unfortunately, like many graduates, it's the bit that comes after university that has me left a bit stumped.

I would love to pass on some of the knowledge i've gained from my many late nights studying, and instill some of the passion I feel for this subject into those who perhaps need a little push to reach their full potential.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching English abroad - spending a month in Laos working with children of all English speaking levels and abilities. It taught me a lot about how to make learning fun, and provide innovative and different ways to help the kids learn (such as with a sing-a-long or art session). I have also taught basic-to-intermediate level piano lessons to younger children. I am familiar with the current GCSE and A-Level syllabus in English Literature and Language (AQA).

Tutoring Approach:

I will work with you on texts that you are currently studying - teaching you how to do close reading, understanding context, and how to translate this into the framework of an essay. We will work on building confidence in your own writing abilities - looking at grammar, punctuation and spelling, and at how you articulate yourself. We will look at how to compare and contrast two different texts. We will look at different forms of literature, such as plays, novels and poems - and how these affect the reader/audience (us!) We will tackle the best way to structure and write essays; both in terms of coursework and under timed exam conditions. We will look at possible essay questions, and write some ourselves. We will look in depth at the exam board marking criteria and specifications to ensure you understand how you can achieve the best grade possible.

Personal Description:
I'm a flexible, energetic and dynamic tutor offering lessons in English, Violin and 11+ to students from primary age to A-level and beyond. I have a passion for English literature and music, and I love to teach.

As I have been finishing my PhD, I have gradually been taking on more pupils for private tuition. I specialize in bringing the academic study of English to life for school students by combining a dynamic and accessible approach with the exciting ideas and research I have experienced at university level.

Teaching Experience:

I have a range of classroom and 1-to-1 teaching experience. As an English tutor, I have worked with a range of students from primary to PhD level. I am experienced at preparing students for exams, 11+ and university entrance, including intensive revision work to prepare students for a particular exam.
I have also delivered the GCSE English curriculum to a home-schooled pupil as her only English teacher. At the University of St Andrews, I was employed for 3 years as a tutor for undergraduate students in the English and Music departments. Through my tutorials on essay writing skills, I was able to significantly improve the marks of my cohort of students, and I teach the same techniques to my pupils at school stage. After qualifying with the widely recognized CELTA certificate in English Language Teaching, I spent several summers teaching English language to classes of children and teenagers aged from 10 to 18.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning with a tutor can be much, much more fun than learning in school! And since literature is all about life, learning to critically read and interpret literary texts, whether at GCSE or undergraduate level, will open your eyes to look at the world in a new way. I love the fact that through my experience of university life as a student and teacher, I can fast-track my school-aged pupils to the skills and ideas they'll need at university and beyond. The study of English literature at university is a different world to that at school - I wish I had known at school how rich and interesting the subject was. Through my teaching, I aim to inspire my students not only to understand and appreciate the great works of literature that they study, but to use them to understand big ideas about history and society.

I am also keenly aware of the requirements of the various exam boards, and I tailor my approach to developing skills to excel in particular exams and beyond. I particularly enjoy preparing students for exams such as GCSE and A-level, and I am equally at home providing challenging debate to stretch the most gifted and talented pupils, or inspiring enthusiasm in students who want to improve their grades. One of the best things about private tuition is seeing my pupils develop their confidence, whether in musical performance or tackling the big ideas in works of literature.

As a violin teacher, I love to teach beginners of any age, but particularly young children. My lessons are lively, interactive and engaging, developing all-round musical ability in a way that is fun and motivating. I can also act as a practice buddy for any instrument, and assist with reading music, sight-reading, music theory and aural training skills.

Personal Description:
My name is Dr Liam, I have a PhD in Private tuition and having been a private tutor for over 20 years, teaching children and adults alike, I am able to provide an individually tailored service to the needs of the student at a time to suit them. I work 7 days a week and cover a broad section of subjects, specialising in Maths, Science, and English.

I am a published Author and enjoy absorbing books. I am also a keen martial artist, studying many disciplines, and have a black belt in Jujitsu.

My first lesson is charged at 10 for the first hour, partially offset the cost of my details but also to make sure I am right for you.

Teaching Experience:

I am passionate about helping people, whether that is to achieve their aspirations in life or just help them get over a difficult academic hurdle. People are all different and require different things, a classroom situation is a "One size fits all" option and sometimes people need a little more, something bespoke, that's where I come in.
I have a PhD in Private Tuition and have pursused a career in full time Private Tuition for over twenty years. During this time I have also taught in Schools and Universities but my real passion is with accelerated learning which is only possible with on the one-to-one basis.

Tutoring Approach:

Tuition comes in many forms but the most important difference to ordinary 'group' teaching is in the pace of learning. My lessons are always client focussed, with a constant view on achieving outcomes. My approach is flexible and dynamic enough to identify my client's strengths and weaknesses in order to rapidly adapt my teaching style to their needs.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm caroline - I am currently studying History of Art at University College London, in my first year. Before this I attended a grammar school in Aylesbury and studied History, Politics, Art History and Biology for A level. Therefore the subjects I will be tutoring on reflect my own interests.
I am 18yrs old based in London and can speak Mandarin fluently.
I've always enjoyed working with children or helping those younger than me, taking active leadership roles where I can. After personally benefiting from tutoring and participating in a buddy system at school I'd really like to help and teach other people as well.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many family friends in the past, mainly primary school children basic english and maths however after completing my Secondary School Education I feel equipped to tutor at GCSE and A level.
I have tutored younger years at my school during my time there and helped out at History drop-in help sessions, particularly in the run up to exam periods and helping those taking exams to prepare well (GCSE and AS level).

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe in practice makes perfect, and I take a relentless approach in ensuring those I teach fully understand the material and can bring in their own ideas as well.
Teaching one-on-one will also mean i can coach them on writing skills and develop their ideas more readily. However developing an enjoyable teaching environment where the tutee feels comfortable interacting with me is also very important and beneficial to them. I usually take a relaxed approach and encourage them to learn in a pleasant way.
I try to adapt my approach according to who i'm teaching as well, so more games and fun tasks for children while more topic based for older tutees.
I will also use powerpoint presentations, notes I'd taken while studying those subjects and past papers to facilitate my teaching. I've been through all the exams and learning, therefore I can understand more fully what my tutees will need (in terms of support and resources).

I usually choose one topic to focus on per lesson, however if the tutee has a particular topic or problem he/she are struggling with at school, I will happily spend some time on that instead.
I have no problem with running over the hour, at no extra charge, in order to finish a discussion or topic as I feel it is very unhelpful to end abruptly and leave a topic unfinished. I may also set homework that I will mark free of charge outside of lessons and provide feedback.

Personal Description:
I am a multilingual ex-City consultant with degrees in Physics and Environmental Economics.
I tutor Maths, Physics, Science and languages (French, German, Spanish, Latin). I am a very patient tutor who understands very well the challenges of learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have one-to-one experience in tutoring Maths, Physics, French and Latin. Most of my experience is from my engagement with a south London initiative called GCSE success.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very patient tutor who values getting the 'basics right' before building on that knowledge. I am very flexible and adaptable depending on the pupil's aptitude and interest in the subject. I tend to use visual aids for Maths and Physics tutoring with very positive results.
