I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in the summer of 2002 with a Honours Degree in English and History. Through this position I have been privileged enough to be able to sit my Post Graduate Certificate in Education, making me a qualified teacher, and a Level five OCR qualification in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties. Though my specialist area is Dyslexia I am very interested in all specific learning difficulties and I am currently studying towards a diploma in Psychology at the University of Teesside, which is the first step towards becoming an Educational Psychologist which I would really like to do.

Teaching Experience:
I am a currently working as a Dyslexia Support Tutor at Middlesbrough College where I teach learners from the age of 14 and upwards. Until recently I was carrying out this role on a part time basis and at the same time teaching ESOL to entry level learners of all ages and working as a Dyslexia Support Tutor at Teesside University as well. My name is Michelle Barnes and I am 28 years old and I was born, raised and received my education in England. Over the last decade my companies employee base has come from many countries from around the world; it is for this reason I became interested in teaching English to foreign students. Continuing my interest in teaching English I completed the TEFL 100 hour course and realised I could construct lesson plans which would teach students various aspects of the English language in a fun and relevant way.

Teaching Experience:
I have spent some time in Malta where I provided private tuition for 5 Korean students for about 5 hours a day. I found this very rewarding and would like to continue teaching English as a foreign language as I gain great enjoyment from it.

Prior to this, and whilst studying for my bachelor's degree, I worked on and off for 4 years as a teacher's assistant at a Steiner school, working with students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and assisting across all curriculum areas. My approach to tutoring is to build up confidence in students that they are capable and able to accomplish their personal goals as well as goals set by the education system.
For struggling students I achieve this by stripping down the subject/topic to its basic components and slowly building it up again, ensuring the child is with me and comprehending each step of the way.
There is never any kind of belittling or display of frustration as this only inhibits the child's confidence and self-worth.
I believe in a whole-person approach whereby I capitalise on the the student's strengths and use this to improve their weaker areas.
For gifted students, there needs to be sufficient stimulation and challenges set to ensure that their interest is maintained and their abilities do not plateau.

But no worries: as I am aware that learners react differently to different teachers, and both need to get used to each other, the first two lessons will be held on a trial basis.
