I am in my fifties and live in Shoreham by Sea. I can travel to see you within the Brighton and Worthing areas.

I am an experienced and fully qualified teacher of English (Key Stage 2/3, GCSE or As/A2 level English Language /Literature), English as a Foreign Language examinations (IELTS or Cambridge First, Advanced or Proficiency). I also offer support for essay writing or study skills at university level and can help those on teacher training courses. I have previously studied Drama and Media, so I can teach these subjects for GCSE as well.

As well as doing a small amount of private tutoring, I am the director of studies at a local school and also write up critiques for creative writing for two well known colleges that take assignments by correspondence.

I also have an MA in Creative Writing and have had poems published including two books. I am able to give critiques for poetry or stories that you have written.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English for 15 years. This has been both in Further Education and at private colleges. I now work in private education. I also have extensive experience of one-to one tutoring having visited many students in the Worthing to Brighton areas over the last ten years.

Teaching on Skype is relatively new but I started back in 2006, so I have gained experience of this from the onset and thoroughly enjoy meeting my students who live all around the world. On Skype I offer a free 20 minute introductory session. I am happy to spend some time discussing the concept of learning on the computer, so that you can decide if it is the right option for you.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a friendly manner and approach to tutoring and believe that a good working relationship with the student is important.

Personal Description:
I am a 31-year-old Italian mother tongue. I work as a freelance translator and interpreter, my work languages are Italian, English and Spanish. I am also teaching Italian to English speakers (grammar, advanced conversation, group and one-to-one classes).

Teaching Experience:

4yrs+ - groups and one-to-one tutoring. Mainly English speakers a different levels.
Teacher at FLC @ Exeter University
Cactus Language Teacher
Private tutor for individuals, uni students and groups.
Running a translation and interpreting small but thriving agency in London.

Tutoring Approach:

My strong linguistic background (Italian, Spanish, French, English and Japanese, which I am currently learning) makes me able to fully manage learning processes and techniques and adapt them to each student. My deep knowledge of my mother-tongue grammar and style lets me develop topics easily and focus on individuals' skills and tackle their learning problems. I believe in the approach focused on both grammar topics and listening/talking: a mix of both is always best. And a lot of practising, because memory and repeating always work well together. Sometimes I find myself offering a quick overview of the English grammar to students too: it helps consolidating their own language and helps them relating it to the one they are about to learn.

And of course: fun is a main part too!

Personal Description:
I am a teacher of exceptional qualifications and experience, acquired in both Bulgaria and the UK. My 5-year MA degree (English Philology, comprising of English and American Studies, Applied Linguistics and Theory and Practice of Translation, Grade 2:1) has provided me with a thorough and solid theoretical basis in all aspects of English. It includes a teaching qualification up to Level 7/8, validated as a full UK QTS by the GTC for England. I have also completed a second degree (with 1st class Hon.) and obtained a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.

My theological degree and the Certificate in Counselling, have equipped me with deeper understanding of my students as whole human beings.

I have an excellent command in English, Bulgarian and Russian, and use French at a pre-intermediate level. I have completed other training courses as relevant for my teaching skills.

I am qualified and experienced to teach pupils from primary school to university (post-graduate) level as following:

- primary school: English, Maths, basic literacy and numeracy skills
- secondary school: English language, English literature, Maths (year 7 and 8), GCSE English Language and Literature
- A-level English Language and Literature
- ESOL - all levels
- Citizenship - Life in the UK test
- IELTS - all levels
- English for Academic Purposes (academic writing skills, essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - undergraduates and post-graduates
- proofreading of academic assignments (essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - undergraduates and post-graduates
- help with writing academic assignments (essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - undergraduates and post-graduates
- Bulgarian language - all levels

Teaching Experience:

I have been employed as an EAP, Business, IELTS, ESOL and English Language and Literature teacher and have worked at universities, colleges and schools across two countries. My experience in teaching and translation has expanded my vocabulary and understanding of the principles in Business, Marketing and Management, Economics, Accounting and Finance. My experience teaching at four universities, and supporting children in schools and adults has helped me become an exceptionally versatile teacher.

While tutoring all my primary school pupils achieved their individual targets (whether improving basic literacy skills, or advancing in their level of reading or writing).

My GCSE and A-level English pupils achieved 100% A-grades in their exams (both English language and literature).

I have tutored successfully for the Citizenship/Life in the UK test. I have the latest information of the test changes (from 2014). All my tutees have passed the Life in the UK test.

With university students I have expertise teaching the following academic skills:

structuring academic essays, implementing skills of cohesion and coherence and using the appropriate subject-related style
paraphrasing and summarising texts and applying correct grammar and suitable register in writing
using quotations and in-text citations and referencing them accordingly
producing accurate and cohesive reports in the appropriate style and format
developing reading strategies for academic materials
developing critical thinking skills through discussions and seminars and applying them in academic writing
critically evaluating sources of data
preparing a subject-related project/feasibility report using a range of data sources
delivering a presentation on a subject-specific topic, using Microsoft Powerpoint for effect
demonstrating understanding of key concepts and inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context
developing speaking and seminar skills, useful for active participation in discussions and debates in the classroom and outside
demonstrating the ability to carry out case study analysis
interpreting numerical, statistical and financial data orally and in writing
deploying the necessary library- and word-processing skills to fulfil set tasks
demonstrating a clear understanding of what constitutes plagiarism and how to use the Harvard Referencing system for citation and the production of Reference Lists

At an academic skills pre-sessional course at the University of Birmingham in 2014 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I had some very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning.

Creativity is another of my specific 'gifts'. Students appreciate the varied activities I offer - discovery, peer-teaching, role play, group projects, group presentations, 'speaking corner' competitions, debates, often creating my own materials for them. According to students' needs, I use the T-T-T or P-P-P approach, the first one being my personal preference, as it allows a wider scope for creativity. Communication takes place all through the lesson, in possibly, multi-cultural groups, as I believe these skills would be beneficial for life. I make use of all resources available, with ILT used in every lesson. I rely heavily on using the VLE and widely implement e-learning. In lessons I have used Iphones and Ipads, to help visual and auditory learners. For kinaesthetic learners I have other activities, which have proven popular. It is my observation that despite the varied learning styles, all students benefit from 'doing', so kinaesthetically-based lessons seem to be remembered the longest.

Having learned English as a second language, I can identify with problems of international students and am always ready to listen to them and offer help. The same is valid for home students, as I have knowledge and experience of life in this country. Working with external agencies and liaising with services and voluntary organisations has provided me with the necessary experience.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a couple of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan for work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain help-book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Personal Description:
I have been a journalist for 25 years and have a love of the English language. I have also written several books. I decided to start teaching English as a Foreign Language last year because I love English grammar and wanted a new challenge. Now I have the advantage of being a writer of English as well as a teacher which enables me to help people with both speaking and writing.

Teaching Experience:

I have qualified on the Trinity College, London, TESOL course at Universal Language Training in Woking. During the course we gave over six hours of teaching and subsequently I have been teaching on a one to one basis.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to get the student to do most of the work, speaking and writing English, and thinking for themselves rather than all the prompting coming from me. I tailor the work to their needs, so if it is a business client we look a the situations they encounter in their work and using role play we practise English in the workplace.

Personal Description:
I grew up in Japan, and have worked there for 1 year, and 2 years in Taiwan, so I have a good command of Japanese and Mandarin. I have the advantage over native speakers of having mastered them as a foreign language for myself, so I know from experience how to teach it.

I enjoy spending time with people, teaching, and passing on whatever knowledge I have, helping them improve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

2 years teaching teaching Japanese and Chinese to students one-to-one, and in small groups, from 5 years old to adult. I have also taught some lessons for the Japan Foundation in London.
1 year teaching in a Senior High School in Japan
2 years teaching in a Language school in Taiwan.
2 months teaching in Brighton.
2 years teaching one to one English.
Over 10 years as a language learner, so I have been in your shoes, and can share the innovative techniques and memorization methods I've used.

Tutoring Approach:

Student of Chinese said, "Ali tailored the lessons very well and ensured that learning Chinese from scratch was not intimidating. The resources were excellent with varied activities, and there was a lot of out of classroom support. I have enjoyed the lessons immensely and it has inspired me to continue learning Chinese. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ali as a teacher."
I will help you with your reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and have tricks to help you remember the written scripts easily.
With years of experience teaching foreign languages, I tailor your lessons to your needs, learning style, interests, and goals. I use varied resources, activities and role-plays allowing maximum participation, and an enjoyable, and effective learning environment.
Please contact me for more information, or more testimonies.

Personal Description:
I am a retired police officer who is now seeking some part time work in order to continue to have social interaction with people and to utilise my teaching skills. My main hobbies are keeping fit at the gym, music, reading, cinema, concerts and travel. As a person I am empathic, patient and kind and I love animals. I am interested in current affairs both in the UK and worldwide.

Teaching Experience:

During my career I spent 5 years teaching IT in industry. As a police officer I spent 7 years in the Training Department teaching IT as well as Communications Skills, First Aid, Law and Force Policy. Since retiring I have passed a CELTA course and have secured two short term teaching posts so far in 2012 teaching in Austria and also at an Easter school in the UK.

Tutoring Approach:

I apply to tutoring the same skills that I have used during my extensive time as a trainer - I motivate by encouragement, patience and praise, and use a teaching approach that will suit the learning style of my student. I also enforce strict deadlines and standards in order to maximise the learner's gain from the teaching time, and to ensure that they use their study time wisely and efficiently. My attitude towards learners is that the only silly question is the one which they want to ask but don't, and that if they do not understand something then it requires me to explain it in a different way. I believe that if a learner enjoys their study they will gain a lot more from it, so endeavour to make lessons and tasks interesting and relevant.

Personal Description:
Having been born and raised in multicultural Toronto to immigrant parents, I have a deep appreciation for intercultural communication and understanding. I speak French, Korean and English fluently, with English being my mother tongue. I am a strong supporter of differentiated teaching methods for each learner as the best learning comes with full understanding rather than standard memorisation. I am passionate about teaching and life long learning and look forward to helping my students achieve to the best of their potential.

Teaching Experience:

Trained in Canada with an Honours BA in French and a BEd from the University of Toronto, and currently completing a masters in creative writing at Goldsmiths, University of London, I have 8 years of teaching experience in mainstream schools, on three different continents.
