I have been in the field of teaching languages (Italian being my special subject) for 21 years and have taught for all these years at all levels: children, GCSE, Highers level, University level, and adult classes both vocational and leasure/tourist.
My qualifications include a ESOL-Celta (Univ. of Cambridge) in teaching English as a Foreign Language to children and adults; a degree in English language and literature, as well as French language and literature; a PhD in Italian Studies. Tutoring Approach:

Approach to tutoring varies from objective to objective.
Language in my opinion should be taught in a full immersion style, especially when it is targeting groups of people who are doing it for either vocational or personal reasons.
Tutoring of subjects such as languages with an objective such as GCSE or Highers or indeed University exams must take into account the syllabus that students must complete in order to reach their target: i.e. pass exams and, at the same time, learn in an effective though 'unforgettable' way. The majority of classes must be delivered in the target language, however in order to meet timing of syllabus coverage and exams some of the concept must be strengthened in the student's language.
In an ideal world, where no exams or timed targets exist, then tutoring of a language should happen 100% in the target language.

I am an Open University graduate having completed an BA(Hons) degree. I chose my own programme of study which consisted of French,English Language Studies with GCSE/Standard grade Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. I am confident that the children I tutor receive the highest quality support because work is individually prepared for them, their progress is monitored and parents see the results very quickly.
I also work as an independent TEFL teacher working with children from across the world aged from 5 -50 years. Some of these are groups but I now specialise in one to one support which enables me to use my tutoring skills to greater effect.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor I believe it is important to follow some very key principles.
1. Always start from what the tutee knows therefore I always start with some sort of baseline analysis. This is always carried out in a very informal and relaxed manner. This enables me as a tutor you need to identify what he/she can and cannot do.
2. I am always happy to work closely with the tutees school if agreed/wanted to identify areas they are working on to support school work.
3. Work in an environment where the tuttee feels safe and comfortable. Very often this is at home in an area to work quietly.
4. Make the learning as much fun as possible and as appropriate and individual to their needs.
4.To create , as quickly as possible, a relationship with the tutee. They need to feel safe, comfortable and at ease - this makes both learning and teaching more effective.

It is the application of an integrating approach for the development of communicative skills in the lesson, in which the four skills in the acquisition of knowledge of a foreign language can be taught in a coherent way, and practiced together, with a distinction of the importance of one upon the other. One image for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) is that of a tapestry. The tapestry is woven from many strands, such as the characteristics of the teacher, the learner, the setting, and the relevant languages (i.e., English and the native languages of the learners and the teacher). For the instructional loom to produce a large, strong, beautiful, colorful tapestry, all of these strands must be interwoven in positive ways. For example, the instructor's teaching style must address the learning style of the learner, the learner must be motivated, and the setting must provide resources and values that strongly support the teaching of the language. However, if the strands are not woven together effectively, the instructional loom is likely to produce something small, weak, ragged, and pale--not recognizable as a tapestry at all.

I have tutored during my time at college and university, including to troubled teenagers. I've also volunteered in an after school program for two years, which involved additional tutoring and homework assistance for those that needed it.

I think it is important for students to love the languages they're learning, and a love of the culture goes a long way to achieving this. I therefore try and incorporate the grammatical aspects of learning a language with cultural curiosities of the country in question.
