Personal Description:
I am 56 years old, am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience. I am an easy-going reliable person who likes to make my students feel at ease at all times.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching seconday school students since qualifying in 1998. I have had two full-time posts, worked as a supply teacher as well as having private students. I have worked in Inner London, Outer London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire schools. I have also worked in France at a small private school during the '80's, predominantly teaching adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach French using the native tongue as much as possible. I use my own resources although I use the Internet for ideas whenever it's suitable.
For Maths I follow the syllabus laid down by whichever examining board the student is using and resources come from a wide variety of places usually from where I have recently been teaching. I gather information from colleagues who sometimes have great ideas. I like to be able to go through past papers with students marking work as we go through a course.

Personal Description:
After having completed a qualification in advanced Spanish in Salamanca in Spain, I returned to the UK to complete a degree in Psychology. Following university I went to drama school, and college to learn to teach English as a foreign language. I have taught Spanish and English privately since graduating, and love to see my students improving in their language. I am trained in phonetics, so can help improve in Spanish pronunciation, and with British English or American pronunciation. I am flexible and willing to travel to central and around London, or or have students at home in the Crystal Palace area.

Teaching Experience:

Before completing the CELTA course I taught Spanish privately and in groups at the university of Sheffield. While at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School I taught private Spanish, and also drama/speech preparation to those wishing to get into drama school, then of course during my CELTA course I was constantly teaching English to classes and privately. I have taught private lessons in Spanish and English since then, and am doing so currently. As you can imagine, from living in Spain, a degree in Psychology, a professional acting qualification and teacher training, I've been around the study of people and how they work for a while now. These experiences have made me an empathic, patient and responsive teacher. Learning styles are really important for a teacher and a learner - if we can figure those out, you can become amazing and proficient in whatever you want. Let's have fun, get some work done, and finish proud of what you've achieved.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a modern approach to language teaching and want to make it as fun and interesting as possible. The mixture between a Psychology degree, an acting degree, and a CELTA course mean my approach to teaching is empathic and eclectic. I may use traditional board methods, or role-playing techniques to make sure my students' learning styles are explored and made use of. I would be perfect for any native Spanish speaker as I can relate language points to make comprehension of English clear, and for any English speaker who wants to learn Spanish. As stated above, my knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet and its application makes me a good choice for anyone additionally wanting to improve their English, or Spanish pronunciation. I have lived in Spain, so I understand what it's like to live in a foreign country where you don't know the language. I have training in phonetics from both drama school and the CELTA course, so am a good choice for pronunciation practice in an addiction to language improvement.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified and experienced tutor, based in central Ipswich and I can tutor in students' homes or my home. I really enjoy tutoring as I find that my students make excellent progress which is very rewarding for me, too. Where required, I can provide references from previous students.

Teaching Experience:

I have 25 years' teaching experience (EFL/ESL, German and French) across all levels in colleges, local schools and as a private tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

Personal Description:
Positive, encouraging, warm and friendly. I graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2011 with an MA(Hons) in English Literature, and am currently undertaking a PGDE in Secondary English Teaching at the University of Strathclyde. I can assure you that whether you are studying William Shakespeare or Irvine Welsh, I can help. From experience, I also know that how much you enjoy the literature in question can have a big impact on how well you write essays or reports on it. I have a passion for literature and know there is always something good to be taken from any book, so hopefully through my tutoring, you'll catch the bug too. From critical readings, to deciphering poetry, to writing your own creative pieces, I've done them all from school through to University, and have no doubt I can guide you to a new-found confidence in your English Literature studies. Having studied Mediaeval, Scottish and Modern History at Junior Honours Level, I can also assist with school level British and European History studies. I am a qualified EFL Teacher, so if you're looking for help developing your English skills, look no further.

Teaching Experience:

EFL Teacher, Adults and Teenagers. Teaching exam based classes, I taught pupils aged 14 and upwards the skills, language and confidence necessary to sit internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL examinations. My teaching role varied from providing one-to-one tutoring for adults wishing to improve their English, to planning and delivering structured, informative lessons for classes of teenagers as part of their curriculum. I am delighted to be able to report that my students' earned not only pass marks in their exams, but were thrilled to attain high grades.

Kindergarten EFL Teacher. In this role I taught classes of thirty students the basics of the English language, using lesson plans and worksheets I developed myself. With a creative and enjoyable approach to teaching, I noticed considerable improvements in the English skills of my students, and am pleased to say my pupils consistently enjoyed my lessons and my warm, constructive teaching style.

Volunteer EFL Tutor. A one-on-one role teaching beginner's English, I tailored my lessons specifically to my pupil's needs at all times, discovering their areas of strength and which methods suited them best, and also working on weaker areas, finding ways to improve these through diverting activities and positive re-enforcement.

Volunteer Leader in ASN Performance Classes. In this role I helped teach children and adults with additional support needs singing, dancing and acting. I assisted either individuals or small groups in developing ideas for dramatic scenes, learning how best to work with each person, adapting scenes to both their preferences and what would help develop their confidence and independence.

I can also expertly proof-read your work, having previously proof-read dissertations, websites and CVs with skill, helping you produce a polished essay.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in structuring encouraging, independent learning environments, helping to draw out your own ideas and discussing them together to achieve an interesting and concise argument for you to work on. I apply constructive criticism with tact and guidance, asking appropriate questions about your theories to allow you to think them through with consideration and depth. I will not tell you what you should write: I will facilitate you, guide you, act as a sounding board for your ideas, and explain any gnarly linguistic or theoretical queries you may have. Be assured that I will come prepared to each lesson, whether online or in person, ready with resources I think would assist you, and with a sound knowledge of the text in question. Above all, I will be dedicated to helping you improve your understanding of the topic; the quality of your written work; and, hopefully, your enjoyment of reading and studying texts.

Personal Description:
My name is Marie-Jeanne, and I'm a Canadian and French national back in the UK to pursue a Master's Degree in Islamic Art and Architecture at SOAS of the University of London.

My educational history confirms my knowledge and understanding of both the British and Canadian systems. As a child, I studied in Canada, but I completed my GCSEs in Oxfordshire, before returning to Canada to finish school in an International Baccalaureate program, to accommodate my love of visual arts and playing the trombone.

During my GCSE's the Edexcel exam board congratulated me for receiving on of the top 5 marks of all exam takers (150000) in English Literature. I also won the English Award at school that year, and started a student council that I was voted president of. I graduated with 10 A* grades and an unfortunate B in IT. When I finished high school, I attended university in Montreal at McGill, a university consistently ranked as one of the top universities internationally. There, I studied Middle Eastern Studies and Art History, and I received a bachelors degree of First Class Honors with Distinction. I also edited an interdisciplinary journal and was the undergraduate president of my department, while playing in a jazz band and singing in a classical choir.

But school isn't everything. In my spare time I have a number of hobbies that bring me immense happiness. When I can, I enjoy painting, cooking, writing, and playing music.

Teaching Experience:

For the past two years, I have been teaching in the private school system in Cairo, Egypt. Most of my students spoke English as a second language, so I focused specifically on making things as clear and simple as possible. I also learned Arabic so that I could explain grammatical intricacies of English in the Arabic language better.

From 2011-2012, I taught in the American Division of Nefertari School, teaching 10th grade English literature. I tailored my curriculum to deal with the themes of Post-Colonialism, gender, and growing older. I taught 5 classes of 25 students. With my focus on reading comprehension, I brought 87% of my students up two reading grade levels by the end of the scholastic year.

The following year I taught at St. Fatima School in the British section. I was a grade 4 class teacher, and taught the entirety of the curriculum, save Art, PE and Music. I tried to make my curriculum as interactive and integrative as possible. During these two years, I also tutored students that needed remedial attention outside of class. I have also taught art to students between the ages of 5-12.

Tutoring Approach:

A tutor needs to be intuitive and flexible to the needs of the student so that they can make the most of their time together. Everyone learns differently, and at a different pace. By communicating with, and working with a student, I can understand how best they can glean the information I'm sharing with them, and how they can most benefit from the time spent.

In terms of resources, I try to incorporate the broadest range possible: multimedia, IT, music and various written and visual tools to get the message across. I also think it's crucial to make the subject interesting, which means asking and answering broader questions: why is this subject engaging/ fascinating to me? How can I make it so?

Personal Description:
Recently relocated to Winchester from Manchester. I have two teen aged children. I have an Honours Degree in English and European Literature, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Studies, and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I began a Masters' degree in English Language Tradition some years ago at the University of Sheffield, which sadly had to be curtailed due to employment relocation. However iI still have a life long enthusiasm for the english language and have recently applied as a volunteer on the English Project in Winchester.

My past employment has always been around student support and educational services, working as a quasi civil servant with overseas diplomats for the Royal Institute of Public Administration, and then in student support and management roles in 3 UK Universities.

Most recently I have undertaken voluntary learning support roles in a primary school, where I was also a school governor for 5 years, and have been actively involved in the ongoing education of primary school children, having input onto both the marketing and curriculum committees at the school. I worked part time as a playground assistant, so am familiar and sympathetic at working with children at all levels.

I am a sympathetic and organised worker, and am passionate about learning and helping children and adults achieve their potential, and to use their abilities to succeed and be happy in life. I believe I have excellent communication and interpretative skills, I find it easy to build up relationships with children/students at all levels.

I constantly update and instruct myself with updates and developments in Education generally and very familiar with aspects of government policy/OFSTED requirements. I am an avid reader, enjoy film, theatre and politics, I could not face the weekends without a newspaper!

Teaching Experience:

I began teaching English as A Foreign Language, inspired by working with Overseas Civil Servants, working at International House on Piccadilly for a few months and then moved out to Language skills in Tarragona, Spain.
I taught language skills to children ranging from 5 -18 and then did some Literature classes with University students at the University of Tarragona ( three years). I also taught on two summer skills at the Living Language Centre in Rochester, Kent.

Whilst being an 'at home parent' for some years, I was able to give private tuition classes in English and Business to foreign nationals in Cambridge and The Manchester area, gave some spanish classes at my children's primary school, and have been involved in informal tutoring of friends and colleagues.

Tutoring Approach:

I consider myself a good listener, so I think the first steps in helping students of any age achieve their potential is to asses where they are 'now' and listen to where they want to get to, and what they want to achieve. Education is about success and providing student with possibilities, gateways to get to where they want to go. Obviously, at GCSE level, for example, there is a national curriculum which has to be applied and learned, but there are ways to develop students' interest and relevance to the subject, to inspire them to make them want to achieve the desired outcome. I have had good outcomes with University Students, for example, by trying to foster a willingness and desire to learn by making the subject relevant to them. It is not just a case of 'spoon feeding', but of equipping any age learner with the skills and techniques to encourage learning and growth.
There are many different types of learners, and it is essential for any tutor to find out what category of learner their tutee is, and work with this, setting goals, targets and outcomes, not necessarily 'overtly', but as a way for the tutee to feel they are progressing.

I have a good sense of humour, am sensitive to the difficulties some learners face, and enjoy the 'teamworking' aspect of tutoring, working to arrive at outcomes.

Personal Description:
Postgraduate Student.

I am a twenty-one year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and understand the tricky bits of their material which is escaping their understanding. I am a Canadian studying abroad here in Glasgow and therefore do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have the equivalent levels from Canadian institutions with top marks. I tutor best in history, my chosen subject, English or French as a second language, and maths, which I not only did well in during secondary school, but all of which I have also studied at the University level. I get along very well with students of all ages and try to make the tutoring experience a fun an interesting one for any student.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring 1 on 1
ESL teaching (Group sizes from 5-12)
Age range of experience: 7-18 year olds

I have several years of teaching experience in different settings and with different age groups. I've taught English as a Second Language in a camp setting which ran lessons similar to classroom lessons every morning. I had to design my own approaches to various topics which gave me a lot of practice in making studying and learning interesting and easier for children who were less interested or struggling. I also tutored on a private basis for primary school-aged children through the medium of French and English in reading and writing skills as well as the general subjects at that age. I have tutored at the secondary school level in Maths, English, French, Sciences, and History. I have also been a teaching assistant at the University level for both Irish and Scottish Gaelic second language courses as well as a general Celtic World knowledge course.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning should be fun.
Aim is to help student learn how they understand instruction so that they are more confident in their own abilities and can perform better in the future.
Use past work to improve on future work.

Learning should be fun and I strive to make the tutoring experience less about school work and more about understanding the ways in which what is being taught is of interest to the student. Finding ways to improve the student's understanding and learning experience sometimes means approaching the material in a different way than is being taught in class. Teachers understand that not all student learn the same way but cannot always deliver their teaching in all these ways. By helping the student understand the material first and then explaining the method the teacher used to explain it first allows the student to reach their full potential, understand the material, and go back to class with a better chance following the teacher's instruction.

All of this is done in a light-mannered way that does not make the child feel as though tutoring is a punishment for not understanding in class, but rather, a (sometimes lengthy) temporary situation until the student becomes more confident about his or her own skills!

Using the student's own work is an important tool for helping them recognize their own areas of difficulty and should be used again as mock exams to help the student see tangible proof of their improvements. The best understanding of any subject comes from watching it being done/having it explained, doing it oneself, and then teaching it in turn.
