| Personal Description: Presently I am a teacher of Design and Technology at a boy's school in Surrey. I enjoy the challenges offered by the ever changing educational environment and am involved in the research of online learning and teaching, also known as e-learning. My specific area of interest is on-line collaborative learning and the design and development of online learning objects to facilitate self paced tuition. I was born in South Africa and relocated to the UK even years ago to widen my horizons and further my studies. I have always had a passion for the transfer of values and attitudes through education and the development of life skills through active participation. My role of assessor for the Duke of Edinburg's Awards occupies most of my spare time but I make time for running and participating in mostly half marathons. |
Teaching Experience: I started my teaching career in 1982 as a primary school teacher. One year later I was seconded to teach Biology at secondary level and was appointed Head of Department of Science in 1988 at a school in SOWETO (South Africa). After two years I was seconded to Funda Centre where I co-ordinated the in-service training for teachers of Biology. After three years I was appointed as subject advisor for Biology in the Johannesburg Region. In 1997 I stared the Soweto Technology Project and retrained to become one of the first of several qualified technology teachers in South Africa. I participated in a working party that was responsible for drafting the outcomes based national curriculum for Technology in South Africa. I joined the Rand Afrikaans University in 1998 as a lecturer and started the first university based technology centre for the post graduate training of technology teachers. I was co-author of the course material used for the BEd and MEd Technology Education degree courses. In 2002 I relocated to the UK where I initially taught Graphics and ICT at a maintained school. For the last five years I have been teaching Technology (Systems and control) an independent boys school in Surrey. On a part time basis I have been tutoring pupils in preparation for common entrance examinations in Mathematics, Science, English, Verbal and Non Verbal reasoning. |
Tutoring Approach: I strongly support a student-centred approach rather than a teacher-centred approach. It is important to transfer both skills and techniques required to study effectively and reflect accurately on what has been achieved than just merely covering subject content. My personal experience has taught me the value of having the skill to access any available knowledge and develop some understanding thereof. This has now become more evident with the opening of the largest library in the form of the internet and the World Wide Web. I promote the teaching of different learning styles and learning approaches and find it necessary to inform pupils of how the mind and the brain functions in order for them to develop their critical and creative thinking skills as well as their cognitive memory. My intention is to lead tutees to higher levels of cognition than what is expected from through the curriculum which supports my philosophy of: 'Education is like hunting birds - if you aim where they are, you hit where they were'. |

| Personal Description: I am a student in my second year, studying Electronic Systems Engineering for a MEng at The University Of Manchester. I was a competitive swimmer for 10 years; I represented the City of York whilst swimming for the York City Baths club. My greatest swimming achievement would be winning the Yorkshire Team championships as part of the freestyle team and placing second in the medley teams. I really enjoyed the teamwork involved in the event which I feel contributed to our success. Futhermore I have recently been awarded the ASA/UKCC Level 1 Certificate for Teaching Aquatics, which qualifies me to teach swimming, I also occasionally volunteer at local swimming competitions, helping with the running of the events and looking after the swimmers. In addition to this I enjoy team sports and currently play Dodge Ball with the university and hope to join the American Football team next year. I love to travel and have visited many different places, my favourite would probably have to be Hawaii, but I was extremely interested in a visit to the Hoover Dam which I feel is one of the most impressive man-made structures in the world. I can also play the guitar and have a great love for music, ranging from acoustic to heavy metal, I particularly enjoy going to live shows. I will be available for tutoring after the 16th of June up until October when I will be going back to Manchester for University. I will be available during the Christmas and Easter holidays for some 1-1 revision sessions before exams. The prices stated are not fixed and I would be more than willing to negotiate. |
Teaching Experience: My main source of teaching experience comes from helping out at my local primary school with a year 1 class. I also gained experience when in order to achieve the level 1 swimming teacher qualification I was responsible for a group of 4-8 children in the water for eight 30 minute sessions which I planned myself. I also worked in the Disney store as a Christmas temp. |
Tutoring Approach: In initial meetings with the tutee I would provide them with a few example questions which I would help them through to see what level they were currently at. I would look at each tutee separately and try to decide how they prefer to be taught, I think this is the main advantage of tutoring, the personal approach to each tutee. I would always try to make sessions interesting and fun, providing inventive ways to aid learning that a school would never be able to achieve with large classes. |

Tutoring Approach: Since I have been teaching students as a private tutor as well as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Southampton, I have a very good knowledge of the problems that students face in the different subjects that they study. Due to my experience I know what type of questions are asked in the exams and therefore while teaching my students, I emphasize particularly on the areas which can enable them to clear their exams easily. |

| Personal Description: I am a semi-retired Electronics Engineer and Speech Scientist, now an Associate Lecturer with the Open University. My first degree was in Electrical Engineering, from Woolowich Poly. I worked for about twenty years in the electronics industry, mainly as an integrated circuit designer, then spent twelve years at the Defence Research Agency at Farnborough doing research into the use of automatic speech recognition in military aircraft. During my time at Farnborough I did my PhD part-time at the Linguistics Department, Reading University, on studies related to my work. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring for six years, and have also been teaching for the Open University for about the same time. I also teach archery at beginners level. |
Tutoring Approach: This depends on the pupil, the subject, and the level. At A level, the pupils generally know what they don't know, so I am guided by them, and mostly explain what they don't understand, show them how to do calculations, and go over past papers. At GCSE, I would generally spend the first couple of sessions finding out which areas they are weakest in, and then concentrate on those, ensuring that they understand the basic ideas of algebraic manipulation, especially. It is also important to guide them into neat and methodical ways of working (this also applies to A level). Note: I generally travel to the pupil's home for tutoring, and will only accept pupils coming to my house if they are over 18. Although I am prepared to travel up to 25 miles, for trips over about 15 miles I would prefer to do two hour sessions, to make the travel time worth while. |

| Personal Description: Hi, I am a highly qualified engineer who qualified with top grades throughout the academic career. I have an excellent understanding of analytical subjects such as mathematics, physics and electronics. I am flexible, considerate and understanding and know teacher-student relationship very well. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students of A-Levels and GCSE for about a year part-time. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe the key to successful academic career is the teacher, student and parent Triangle and making subjects interesting, each entity interacting with others practicing open communication, sharing problems and finding a collective solution. Normally, I prefer to arrange monthly/weekly meetings in the presence of this Trio to update of the progress and plans ahead. Setting goals and meeting milestones and timescales with strong grip on the subject has always been my top priority. To make subject more interesting I have innovated and practiced some new ways of doing exercises and creating challenges based on each individual student's personality. |

| Personal Description: Professional engineer and Technical manager with over 20 years industrial experience in electronics and consumer electronic product design. I'm passionate about engineering and obviously particularly electronics and this is apparent with the enthusiasm I display in my approach to tutoring. |
Teaching Experience: Experienced tutor and mentor generally in industrial setting but am transfering this knoweldge and skill into the private/home tutoring setting. |
Tutoring Approach: I always like the well known KISS approach, Keep It Simple Silly. As a professional engineer I resist quoting from text books and although the theory behind the techniques are important, I feel we learn and retain a lot more if we can apply the knowledge in a 'real world' scenario. |
