The most important thing when tutoring a student is to be patient and kind as no student benefits from an environment in which they are made to feel stupid or slow. In fact, the problem is often the way students are taught and so I try to make lessons as interactive as possible to ensure that the student really understands what I teach them.

I believe that it is important to tailor the Tuition classes to the needs of the individual student, in order to help students realise their full potential. Students learn in different ways and so it is important to recognise that the method that works for one student, might not work for another.

I like to sit-down with students to establish what they are hoping to achieve, and where their strengths and weaknesses lie in the subject. That way I can ensure that the lessons are as helpful as possible for the student as I try to help the student achieve their goals.

For Long-Term students, I have found that it works best to track the lesson plans according to what has been taught in school during the week. This allows me to help students to to ensure that any misunderstandings are dealt with quickly so that they can build on this knowledge in the next week's lessons at school.

For students close to Exams, I focus more on the concepts that are fundamental to the subject to boost the chance of gaining high marks in the exam. I also focus on teaching exam technique.

In my role as proofreader, I am sometimes approached for advice on essay writing, often by people who have never been properly taught this key skill. Throughout my educational career, I have found that without this skill, an individual's progress can be severely restricted.
In the past I have also successfully tutored Sociology at AS level and was very pleased to see my tutees' grades improve when resitting exams. I feel that at least part of this success was due to the rapport we had built up from an early stage.
I am currently teaching an adult Welsh learner via Skype, which offers it's own challenges and opportunities.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my tutoring to the individual needs and circumstances of the tutee. We can work on homework, building on the feedback from their school teacher or university lecturer, as well as setting achievable targets to aim for. For this to work, it's vital for the tutee to feel comfortable and confident in the subject, and to find it interesting and relevant. There's nothing worse than reducing what can be a fascinating exploration into how the world works into a dry, and seemingly pointless exercise.

Regarding my tutoring rates: I prefer to work from home, but if that doesn't suit you then I can come to you. In such cases, I also ask for travel expenses to be paid as well. I do not have a car, so where possible this will be a bus or two.

I am also more than happy to meet in a public place (for adult tutees), or for the parents or guardian of the tutee to sit in on the lesson.
