| Personal Description: Having just gained a first during my opening year of the engineering design programme at Bristol, and having explored a wide variety of extracurricular activities, I am staying in Bristol over the summer, so would be happy to help your child prepare for next years studies during this often wasted period of time. |
Teaching Experience: My first tutee improved 4 grades in As physics after about 10 hours of tuition in 1 week. I really enjoyed the process of finding the weaknesses in an individuals understanding, and turning them into strengths, and would love to work with some pupils for a longer period of time, to give them a real advantage. I have always enjoyed helping others to understand concepts better, including classmates, friends and family. I have a passion for learning, and this is something that I like to share with others. As the vice president of the major student society Engineers Without Borders, I am involved in many of our Outreach activities, such as running workshops at local schools, and at big events such as Discover and the Festival of Nature, where we introduce children ( mostly primary or early secondary) to the ideas of development engineering- which is fun and fulfilling. |
Tutoring Approach: Working at a subject is the only way to gain an understanding of it, an understanding that stands you in great stead throughout life, academically, in a career, and in the living of life (being good at maths definitely brings my shopping bill down!) A pupil today is at school receiving education from 9-4 (or something similar), and that education is a great start to life, but it cannot be denied that much of schooltime is wasted, that the children who don't understand are not given sufficient explanation and that those who already do are not given a challenge. Through my tutoring I provide those individual explanations and challenges that are so needed, whilst aiming to instill an enthusiasm for academic study that will mean students begin to understand the world in the light of their education and can take fuller advantage of their schooling. Over the summer period I would be very happy to work with pupils of all ages on a range of subjects, to broaden their education, and so that when they return to school they are equipped to learn. Research has shown that the summer holidays are the period when separation between those from poor backgrounds and those who are more privileged occurs. With a light programme of enjoyable study, I believe a significant long term improvement in students abilities will take place, whilst there is also a bit more to do in the holidays. |

| Personal Description: I am working as an energy and environmental consultant. My background is in quantitative subjects - chemistry, maths, physics etc. I am interested in giving my students valuable knowledge about certain topics such as the environment, carbon emissions, oil and gas. This is something I want to do alongside teaching them core subjects such as maths and physics. My primary objective is to share my knowledge and help students. Hence, I am priced at a fairly affordable rate. As my motivation is not money, I plan to give some free lessons as the student develops. I would like to have at least 3-4 lessons of 1 hour with the student as I would like to tutor him till the end, rather than leave half way. I am quite easy going and like to interact with people. Maths is something I believe is a tough but essential subject. Lots of kids don't like it and feel a bit wary of sums. I am passionate about these subjects and hopefully, should be able to instill confidence in tackling difficult concepts in the student. |

Tutoring Approach: Initially I will try and understand the extent of skills set the student already possesses. Some students are good at memory, whereas some rely more on visual stimulus. So, in the first lesson, I will get into the psyche of the student. Lesson 2 onwards, will be core skill development and concept practice. Lots of examples and illustrations will be prepared before class, so that the student has something to relate to. Advanced concepts such as Calculus will be dealt with in a methodical way. A gentle friendly approach, with 2 way communication is key. My work life has been fairly productive and I have picked up key skills in communication and presentation. My delivery style is very subject oriented and hence, there isn't time for the mind to wander off when I am teaching! |
