| Personal Description: I am a Malaysian Chinese currently in my first year of PhD study in Biology (plant developmental genetics) at the University of Sheffield. I have also secured a studentship at the University of Cambridge and a membership offer from St. John's College. Having the opportunity to spent the last summer working in Cambridge as a research student, I have decided to stay back in Sheffield. If you're interested in knowing why, feel free to ask. Constrating to the stereotypical generalisation about high achievers, I have a friendly and cheerful outlook, being an easygoing, flexible and responsible person. |
Teaching Experience: Voluntary weekend English tutor Classroom assistant for Maths Y8 and Y10 at Parkwood High School in Autumn Semester (2005) Mentoring at Hillsborough College for A-levels Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry (2006) Tutoring for Alpha tutor (2006-) Coaching and mentoring at sixth form colleges (Hillsborough and Norton) - life skills (2006-2008) Science and Engineering Student Ambassador Outreach Assistant for DNA workshops Residential Hall, University and Departmental Open Days tour guide International Orientation Assistant for Sheffield Univerity and Sheffield International College Proofreading for colleagues |
Tutoring Approach: I adopt flexible and personalised approach to cater for students at different levels and I wish to conduct the learning process in a relax and fun environment. I am motivated to disseminate beyond subject-specific knowledge in encouraging the awareness of transferable skills (writing and critical thinkings) and to put things into context by helping tutee to realise the implications of a specific topic in a wider perspective. This often involve discussion beyond the subject on which I'm tutoring to help understanding and tips to get top mark in the exams including calculator technology. Furthermore, you'll be getting more value for the money you spent as I frequently do over time without charging. My objective is to achieve an agreed level of understanding within a session with my tutee which is not strictly adhere to the timeslot. Personal motto: "To empower and to boost self-confidence - believe in yourself" |

| Personal Description: I am an international student studying at the University of Bath. I have worked for two years at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a consultant. My job involved client interaction and training them on ERP systems. I have mentored the freshers joining PwC from colleges teaching them various aspects of the ERP implementation. I am an engineering graduate from one of the top ranking engineering universities in India and was ranked 3rd in my department. I featured in the merit list for the senior secondary examination and secured 98 percent in mathematics. |
Teaching Experience: Prior to my graduation I used to take private tuition for nearly three years. During the course of my job at PwC I found this experience to be extremely useful as I was required to train the client's employees on the ERP systems and mentoring & training new joinees. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is straightforward. I first have a brief interaction with the tutee to understand individual preferences and learning patterns. I then try to create a personalized approach for each tutee to enable them to learn quickly. I emphasize on forming strong basics and building upwards on a strong foundation. |

| Personal Description: Hi! I'm a 21-year old trainee teacher studying in Winchester. I have vast experience teaching and working with children (see below) and I am confident in my own ability of subjects across the curriculum. I live in Farnham, Surrey and will shortly be moving to Fleet, Hampshire. I am willing to travel, but do not drive so access via public transport is a must. I can also tutor from home, if that is more practical. I'm fun and enthusiastic- I think learning is best achieved when children are enjoying themselves. I therefore constantly strive to teach learning objectives in varied and interesting ways. |
Teaching Experience: As I mentioned above, I am a trainee teacher. I'm halfway through my training, having completed two years and this has given me ample opportunity to teach. I have taught one-on-one, small groups and whole class lessons in a variety of subjects (in particular English and Maths) with ages 6- 9. I have also had experience of observing and assisting in the teaching of children aged 4- 11, so I'm confident in my ability to teach across the primary age range. In addition, I have previously worked in nurseries caring for children aged 3 months- 4 years, following the Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines within small groups. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is informal and laid back. I find this motivates children much more than a strict approach as they enjoy learning and look forward to sessions. I try to vary each session following my own planning guidelines. Typically, I will start with a subject-appropriate game (for example, Maths Bingo) to warm the child into the learning mood. The main bulk of the session is focusing on the learning objective in a stress-free environment, and then the last 15 minutes are a recap of the session to ensure the learning objectives have been achieved. I'm a huge advocater of praise, praise, praise to increase confidence and therefore motivation, and follow Bruner's Spiral Curriculum, to ensure the child does not forget key points. |

| Personal Description: I am a 55 year old woman and I have worked in Primary education since qualifying to teach in 1973. I have been a successful teacher and I have been a headteacher in three schools. All three schools received good Ofsted reports during my headships. I love teaching and I bring experience, energy and enthusiasm to my work. I enjoy personalising my materials and teaching methods. I tailor my teaching to each individual and never follow a 'one size fits all' policy. I am active and healthy and I enjoy badminton, cycling, gardening, walking, birdwatching and reading. I have just started writing children's stories. |
Teaching Experience: I taught in primary schools in Surrey, London and Essex until 1996, when I secured my first headship. I then took on a second headship in Essex and then a third in Cumbria. I now work as a self-employed personal tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: I always meet my pupils and their parents or carers to discover as much as I can about each pupil's personality, likes, dislikes, strengths and areas of learning which could be improved. This initial visit is free. I tailor a learning programme which suits the child. I spend a great deal of time, energy and care on preparing simulating material. I use a range of resources, including the internet, CDs, books, crafts and games. |

| Personal Description: I am a bubbly young scientist, and am currently working at the University of Oxford as Research Scientist after having graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Genetics from the University of Nottingham. I have a great passion for science and learning, and thrive in helping others reach their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have been privately tutoring for 2 years now, both at University and after my studies and have enjoyed watching students achieve the grades that they deserve, many of which have now gone on to further study. (References available). I understand class sizes withing school are increasing, and sometimes students don't fully get an in depth knowledge of a subject, which may require extra assistance. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very flexible approach to tutoring, depending on the needs and preferences of the individual student. Lessons can be based around me going over specific topics in more detail, practice exam questions or practice essays, or going over work in class that the student has not quite grasped. I often set weekly 'tasks' to ensure students are making the most from their sessions, including 10 min quiz at the start of the next session, questions to be done, extra reading or essay writing, all of which I mark and give feed back on. |

| Personal Description: I am friendly, positive and always aim to achieve the best, and so expect the same from students. Hard work = success I am very enthusiastic about learning and can make it fun. I have a range of study methods, that can be adapted to suite many people of different backgrounds. I currently live back at home with mum and dad in penwortham. I am a lively and bubbly person that can get along with people of all ages. |
Teaching Experience: I recently completed the SAS (student associate scheme) of which I have a certificate for. This program allowed me to be trained to work at a school. I was placed in a high school in manchester for about a month, where I was able to teach students with a range of abilities. This experience helped me develop different teaching styles. |
Tutoring Approach: Myself I have experienced having a tutor in subjects I struggled with. Tutoring gives students the chance to have one on one interaction and 100 % attention, which students don't always get in a class environment. It enables them to ask questions freely, and go over work again and again until they are fully happy they have a good understanding. Extra tuition can give students greater self confidence when back in the class room. |
