Personal Description:
I studied a BSc in Genetics at the University of Liverpool after which I worked in a microbiology laboratory. In 2008, I moved to Brighton, my home town, and completed a PGCE in secondary science with the University of Brighton. My teaching practice was in two West Sussex schools and I then worked a maternity contract as a Teacher of Biology in an all-girls school in central Brighton. Following this role, I worked as an Editor for a science publishing company based in London.

I have just left a teaching position as a Teacher of Science at Bellerbys College, Brighton, an international school which prepares students for a university education in the UK. Since 2008, I have tutored many students from GCSE to University level providing guidance for exams and subject-specific support. I thoroughly enjoy imparting my understanding and love of science to others.

I am now living in Scotland pursuing an MSc in Psychology at University of Abertay in Dundee. Alongside this, having trained as a yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga, I teach private and group Yoga classes.

I will focus on the parts they do not understand as much, and explain to them as simply as possibly about the topic and also by using appropriate diagrams if necessary. I will refer them to textbooks which I have recommended for them. I will then test them at the end, by asking questions to see if they have really understood. I will end the session by asking if they have any questions about the topic or any areas they would like me to explain.

I tend to use a variety of methods when teaching, depending on the child and their needs, focusing on their age and what their syllabus requires. I am capable to do quick summarised revision sessions, as well as long term lesson plans. Either way I ensure that the student is always given homework and stays revising. I also do small mastery tests at the start of each lesson which consists of a five minute recap test, so the student is required to have revised the previous lesson well. Obviously if they struggle with the homework or mastery test, then the lesson plan's pace is adjusted to meet the child's level. This helps to ensure that the student masters each topic before moving on to the next.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is made up of four elements
1) Test-orientated method
I test my students repeatedly at every stage. This method causes the student to try and keep his focus during every single chapter. I do this in 4 stages
One: Testing student's progress at the beginning of each lesson based on previous sessions
Two: Ending every lesson with a short quiz
Three: An exam-style test at the end of every chapter (usually every 2-4 weeks depending on the length of that chapter and student's progress)
Four: Two mock exams during a period of one month before the actual exam
2) Holistic approach to teaching
One of the most important aspects of teaching that most tutors neglect is the significance of an academic notion called ''holistic based tuition ''.Every single interaction that occurs between the student and his tutor during the 1-2 hour weekly tuition period only constitutes a very small proportion of the whole spectrum of the student's learning process. This means that if the student is not guided by his tutor on a holistic basis, the actual tuition hours will prove insignificant towards student's academic success .Tuition is not just about how fast a student learns a mathematical concept but more importantly it is about what the student does in order to internalise that understanding ? What is the student's plan to not forget those concepts in a few weeks time? What is the student's revision plan? Are there any external factors that are interfering with the student's learning process? These are all questions that if solved properly, will boost a student's academic success and if not will show up later during the exam period in which little can be done about it. I am fully familiar with this method and will use it in my tuition
3) Giving the student a space for reflection and reinforcement of understanding
One of the most fundamental mistakes that personal tutors make is that whenever they think their student did not understand a concept it is their time to shine, intervene and bombard the student with more information which will usually cause even more confusion. This teaching method only makes learning more exhausting for students. Creating a space for a student to reinforce his understandings is a crucial part of the learning process. An active attempt from a student to try and learn or reinforce an idea himself without a tutor's intervention is much more satisfying than getting bombarded by loads of new ideas from their tutor. I am fully aware of the advantages of this method and will use it in my tuition.
4) I myself have been a student in the current educational system
Most of today's personal tutors finished their education in a time when the former educational system was radically different from today's system. I finished my A-levels two years ago and ever since I am updating myself with the latest changes introduced by the exam boards. I gained my academic success from the current system and fortunately found my way through the twist and turns of it. I am very familiar with what it takes to become successful in the current educational system. This is not something you will get from the majority of personal tutors with much experience and knowledge in their respective fields but lacking the necessary understanding of what it takes to achieve academic success in the modern educational system.

My name is Darryl and I graduated from The University of Southampton in June 2013 with a degree in Economics and Actuarial Science (A very Statistical and Mathematical based subject). I previously worked for the American Bank Wells Fargo, and I now currently work as a Financial Consultant for Deloitte.

As a person who has just come out of education I have plenty of helpful tricks and tips to doing well in exams. I am also very familiar with the school curriculum as I have younger siblings, whom I also tutor. What sets me apart from most is that as well as tutoring my students, I take the role of a mentor, to motivate, encourage and guide them towards success.

As a young teenager I was a student who was pressured by my parents do excel in school, this sometimes caused me to have a more rebellious attitude towards my studies. Thus, I realise the various difficulties many students face throughout their studies, and I believe that having this experience provides me with the ability to connect to students who either are struggling with their studies, or are disengaged with their school work.

I achieved straight A's and A*'s at GCSE at a very poor school, I then got offered a scholarship to attend an independent school where I achieved A's in Mathematics, Physics and Economics. Finally I completed my studies at University with an upper second class degree with honours. I now am on a gap year and about to start a teaching course with the vision of becoming a Secondary School teacher in the near future.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching Primary school and GCSE students whilst I was in my final year in sixth form, I then went on to teach A-level students whilst I was at University. Throughout those years my proudest achievement has been motivating my students and changing their attitudes towards studying and school. I have been able to get my students to work much harder then they (or their parents) ever expected them to. I believe the reason for is that I am young and provide a more friend-like support, as opposed to a demanding parent or teacher. By doing this my students' feel that I can relate to them and thus we establish a respected relationship. I spend a lot of time planning for sessions so that my students get the very best out of each lesson. I am a very organised person, and I like to set short term and long term goals for myself and my students. I also like to keep track of the performance of my students, both for my needs and theirs. I always ensure that my lessons are engaging, and I work towards building a good relationship with my students, encouraging them to ask questions without any hesitation. I make sure that my students are comfortable with me by building a friendly and trusting relationship; I believe this enables my students to feel easy and allows them to ask me many questions, which leads to a better learning experience.

I adapt my approach depending on my students' learning style as I feel this is the key to successful teaching. I have had a range of different students, from those who were demotivated and disengaged, to those who needed me for that extra help to reach their goals.

Past papers is a very important part of my lessons, once I am able to cover the concepts and theories of the subject I swiftly turn the attention of my pupils to past papers. I believe practising these papers are definitely the best way of achieving great exam results.
