Personal Description:
I am an innovative and enthusiastic fully qualified Teacher of Physics, living in Durham but teaching in Newcastle. I have a flare and passion for science and am fully CRB (security) cleared for my current full-time teaching post.

Coming from Ireland originally, I spent 9 years studying and working in the North East before moving to London in 2010 to take up a promotion. Having got married in Newcastle last year, my wife and I have relocated back to the North East (hard place to leave!) this summer.

Teaching Experience:

Having achieved a First Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I undertook a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course at the University of Newcastle. Between September 2006 and January 2012, I taught Physics to key stages 3, 4 and 5 at an outstanding secondary school in County Durham. In January 2010 I took up a post as Head of Physics at a school in the London Borough of Hillingdon, recently designated "Outstanding" by Ofsted. My teaching has been rated outstanding, my Physics results have been excellent, with KS5 value added judged as "Excellent" using the ALPS (Advanced Level Performance System), being better than 89% of all UK physics departments. From September 2013, I am back in the North East and working as Second in Science at a large secondary school in Newcastle.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel an open approach to teaching and tutoring alike is most likely to make the subject accessible to students. My personal technique involves covering the scientific basics before moving on to further develop knowledge and understanding. In this way, students are eased gently into a routine of learning which will hopefully guide them to success in their upcoming assessments.

Personal Description:

I have a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol, and a Masters in Biological Sciences from the University of Leicester. Tutoring Approach:

My aim is to try and imbibe in my student a liking of the subject as well as help him/her achieve a high grade. My approach is very interactive and I like to break the factual monotony of the subjects by providing interesting examples which will help to draw the tutee's attention as well help her to remember. I try to interact with the tutee on a one to one basis and identify the weak and strong areas. I then focus on these areas and work accordingly bearing in mind the tutees requirements. I have over 14 years of teaching experience in business studies at the Open University teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. Tutoring Approach:

I take a mentoring and nurturing approach to teaching. I prepare students both at GCSE and A Levels to sit examinations by the three main examining boards in England, namely, Aqa, OCR and Edexcel. I prefer to tutor from home and only take on a very limited number of students so that I can give my full attention to their examination success. I have tutored students who have been deemed not to be high achievers by their schools, but have subsequently gone on to gaining A grades at GCSE. I am highly motivated and nothing gives me greater pleasure than to get letters from students thanking me for helping them to gain examination success. I tutor from home as I have found students perform best in this situation and I also have access to all my teaching resources as necessary to tailor each lesson to suit a particular students needs. Although I feel tutoring from my home is a good approach I am prepared to travel to a student's home but will of course need to charge travel costs.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying my PhD in Biomedicine at the University of Manchester, and hope to progress on to an academic career in cellular signalling, as this forms the basis of my research interests. My current project involves looking at a type of RNA called microRNA that is known to regulate the transcription of DNA, and how this influences the poor pregnancy outcomes that often occur during gestational diabetes. This will hopefully lead to treatments that may prevent the difficulties that occur for both mother and child under these circumstances.

I have not been in Manchester too long, though I love the city and I am planning to stay here for a number of years, as it is now my adopted home!

Teaching Experience:

I taught for three years before I left to do my PhD in a successful secondary school. I taught all three science subjects to GCSE level and taught biology to A-level. I have also studied a degree and a masters within the life sciences/biomedical sciences, and I am now studying for my PhD which has allowed me to gain some demonstrator experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that science is perceived as difficult, but is accessible to the majority of students if they have the drive and the capability to believe in their own ability. It is one of the most important subjects to understand as it will give you a critical, enquiring mind throughout your life and will also look very good on your CV when applying for jobs! This makes me very passionate when it comes to teaching science to those that want to do better in their exams, as I believe pretty much any student can do it if they are willing to believe in themselves and their ability. I feel that interactive approaches, with the student being pushed are conducive to learning as this enables them to think about questions and get them right, or make mistakes and learn how to get them right the next time. Mistakes are often very important to make as they are learning experiences, and need to be made before any formal exam!

I am married with a daughter of 22 and a son of 19. On occasion I help my husband garden for the elderly and disabled. I graduated from Exeter University in 1985. Teaching has always been a vocation rather than a job as I love seeing the 'penny drop'.

Teaching Experience:

In the last 2 Secondary schools I was a Deputy Head of Science and the Professional Tutor for the school. Whilst teaching I covered the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 syllabus. I then had the pleasure of working in the primary sector for 6 years teaching the Key Stage 2 syllabus. Since 2005 I have been tutoring students ranging from 7 years of age to adults. Education Otherwise gave me the opportunity to teach in various homes during the day. I offer day time tutoring to fit the needs of the individual student.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is informal. I believe students learn best when they are at ease and not under pressure. If students are distracted in their own home I offer them tuition in my home. My students marks have improved by 2 grades and in the last 18 months several have jumped up 3 grades leaving students, parents and myself very happy.

After an initial introduction, the tuition process is intensive, with plenty of practice and guidance! I am confident in using ICT, where necessary, to illustrate key concepts.

Generally, I have found that an hour per week is sufficient to improve a child's confidence and ability. However, if you feel your child would benefit from more hours' tuition per week, I will be happy to accommodate them.
