Personal Description:
I relocated to Scarborough in 2011 having lived in Norton/Malton for one year and Nottingham for three. I'm 29 years old. I currently teach Science to students up to the age of 16 in Scarborough. I studied Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle, graduating 8 years ago and going on to to complete a PGCE in Science (Biology) at Nottingham Trent University.

I am from Scarborough originally and so I know the area well, I will be happy to tutor students in my own home or elsewhere. My hobbies include reading, football, going to the gym, cycling and music/films.

I graduated from Loughborough University with an honours degree in Industrial Chemistry. I then went on to do three years research in Photochemistry to gain a Masters degree from Kingston University. I have over 25 years of industrial experience. I have over 14 years of teaching experience in business studies at the Open University teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. At present I am tutoring KS3, GCSE and A Level students in English, Science Subjects and Mathematics.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a mentoring and nurturing approach to teaching. I prepare students both at GCSE and A Levels to sit examinations by the three main examining boards in England, namely, Aqa, OCR and Edexcel. I prefer to tutor from home and only take on a very limited number of students so that I can give my full attention to their examination success. I have tutored students who have been deemed not to be high achievers by their schools, but have subsequently gone on to gaining A grades at GCSE. I am highly motivated and nothing gives me greater pleasure than to get letters from students thanking me for helping them to gain examination success. I tutor from home as I have found students perform best in this situation and I also have access to all my teaching resources as necessary to tailor each lesson to suit a particular students needs. Although I feel tutoring from my home is a good approach I am prepared to travel to a student's home but will of course need to charge travel costs.

My name is Marie-Jeanne, and I'm a Canadian and French national back in the UK to pursue a Master's Degree in Islamic Art and Architecture at SOAS of the University of London.

My educational history confirms my knowledge and understanding of both the British and Canadian systems. As a child, I studied in Canada, but I completed my GCSEs in Oxfordshire, before returning to Canada to finish school in an International Baccalaureate program, to accommodate my love of visual arts and playing the trombone.

I also won the English Award at school that year, and started a student council that I was voted president of. I graduated with 10 A* grades and an unfortunate B in IT. There, I studied Middle Eastern Studies and Art History, and I received a bachelors degree of First Class Honors with Distinction. I also edited an interdisciplinary journal and was the undergraduate president of my department, while playing in a jazz band and singing in a classical choir.

But school isn't everything. In my spare time I have a number of hobbies that bring me immense happiness. When I can, I enjoy painting, cooking, writing, and playing music.

Teaching Experience:

For the past two years, I have been teaching in the private school system in Cairo, Egypt. Most of my students spoke English as a second language, so I focused specifically on making things as clear and simple as possible. I also learned Arabic so that I could explain grammatical intricacies of English in the Arabic language better.

From 2011-2012, I taught in the American Division of Nefertari School, teaching 10th grade English literature. I tailored my curriculum to deal with the themes of Post-Colonialism, gender, and growing older. I taught 5 classes of 25 students. With my focus on reading comprehension, I brought 87% of my students up two reading grade levels by the end of the scholastic year.

The following year I taught at St. Fatima School in the British section. I was a grade 4 class teacher, and taught the entirety of the curriculum, save Art, PE and Music. I tried to make my curriculum as interactive and integrative as possible. During these two years, I also tutored students that needed remedial attention outside of class. I have also taught art to students between the ages of 5-12.

Tutoring Approach:

A tutor needs to be intuitive and flexible to the needs of the student so that they can make the most of their time together. Everyone learns differently, and at a different pace. By communicating with, and working with a student, I can understand how best they can glean the information I'm sharing with them, and how they can most benefit from the time spent.

In terms of resources, I try to incorporate the broadest range possible: multimedia, IT, music and various written and visual tools to get the message across. I also think it's crucial to make the subject interesting, which means asking and answering broader questions: why is this subject engaging/ fascinating to me? How can I make it so?

I like to get to know my students and find out what they are interested in so that I can associate it with the subject that I am teaching. I try to make my students feel at ease as I learnt that when students feel like they are under too much pressure they can find it difficult to concentrate and remember important information. When teaching singing I always let the student decide what songs we study as this helps with their confidence and builds association memory (they remember certain techniques because of the songs they appear in). One of my nieces was learning about the Romans at school and she really liked the story of Boudica, so in her tutoring sessions we put together a booklet on what life was like in Britain when she was alive. Although the booklet was not about Boudica my niece was motivated to find information about that time because she wanted to know how Boudica would have lived. I really enjoy teaching and I feel like it comes naturally because of this.
