| Personal Description: I'm a recent University of Glasgow Biochemistry and MSc International Project Management graduate. I'm a French national and have been living in the UK for 14 years. I'm a lovely person, very dynamic and love the one to one of tutoring. It makes me really happy to help someone achieve something they have worked so hard for. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring privately now for 7 years and have seen my students come to grow in confidence, in understanding and in knowledge of their chosen topics. I saw a girl who I tutored for 7 months go from getting an 'Unclassified grade' in her Biology AS Level to a B in her A2. I have never seen a student of mine's grades stay the same post-tutoring and I am very proud of that. |
Tutoring Approach: I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning. |

| Personal Description: I have worked full-time as a personal tutor based in London since April 2010, teaching mainly philosophy, science and mathematics. In October 2010 I started a part-time BSc in Geology and I have been working as a tutor throughout my second degree. I already hold distinctions for my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and MSc in Philosophy of Science; I graduated at the top of my year in both cases. In my spare time I enjoy cycling (expect to see me arrive to sessions by bike), boxing and rock climbing. I love travelling and am happy to accept tuition jobs abroad outside of term time. |
Teaching Experience: Over the last few years I have gained well over 1500 hours of tutoring experience. I specialise in teaching GCSE Mathematics and Sciences and preparing students for 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance examinations. So far I have successfully prepared students for entrance to City of London School (11+, 13+ and 16+), Goldolphin & Latymer (11+ and 16+), St. Paul's (11+, 13+ and 16+), Westminster (16+), Wellington (16+) and Highgate (11+, 13+ and 16+); I have spent over 500 hours preparing students to take these examinations and am happy to devise a comprehensive scheme of work to ensure students perform their best. I have also taught around 300 hours of philosophy at A-level and degree level and have never failed to raise students' grade or degree class by at least one notch. As my degree becomes more technical, I have also enjoyed teaching A-level mathematics more and more. I have now taught over 200 hours of A-level mathematics. The 'spare change' of my tutoring experience includes: Government and Politics, English Literature and Mathematics at AS and A-level; English, English Literature, Geography and ICT at GCSE level. I also work as an assessor for Blue Tutors. My job is to conduct an assessment of the tuition skills of applicants wishing to tutor for the agency. I have conducted around 300 of such assessments and doing so has given me a keen understanding of what makes a good tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that no subject can be learnt while the student is passive. Whenever possible, I try to guide the student towards the answers with a series of well-placed questions rather than providing them with information which they must then apply by rote. The structure of my mathematics lessons is almost entirely question based - expect to fill a lot of notebooks! The usual method would be to look at past examination papers as soon as is feasible. Although my science lessons are also very questions based, I feel that a lot of science learning can be improved by the student having a clear mental image of the process under study. For example, if we are studying circuits I encourage a student to visualise electric current as a flow of water and then tease out the various implications of such a model. I also find it helpful to instruct a student to explain certain principles to me as though I had no prior knowledge of them. My Philosophy and English lessons tend to focus around essay titles. An A-level student of mine will have completed dozens of essay plans by the time they sit their examination. If the threat of exams is not as pressing, I will also hold small debates where a student is told to prepare one side of an argument and present it to me for the next lesson. The fact that some students find this intimidating actually seems to build up their philosophic courage and lessens problems of exam nerves. When an exam or a piece of coursework is due very soon, I will help a student 'cram' for their assessment. This is a very different style of teaching - one which is not geared towards long-term retention of the information - and it is not recommended that students rely too much on this. My service generally consists in a series of one-to-one in-person sessions charged at an hourly rate. These session can involve: -- Exam preparation (detailed look at past papers, systematic working through syllabus to identify problem areas, exam technique and psychology) -- Last minute exam cramming sessions (although these will be far more effective if you have worked with me for a period before your exams) -- Advice for university applications -- Homework help -- Setting and marking of homework -- University Interview Advice and Coaching -- Confidence Building -- Mock Examinations Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark homework free of charge. Detailed proof reading and feedback for coursework assignments for those I do not regularly teach is charged at my hourly rate. Group sessions are available, the charge is 50% of the normal fee for each additional student. |

| Personal Description: I am an A-Level student currently studying Chemisty,Biology,Maths and english literature at a 6th form. I am able to travel in zones 1-2 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On the Weekends I would prefere if students were able to travel to my house or even better; Canada Water library right next to my house. However depending on how far the tutees house is I will consider traveling on weekends. :) |
Teaching Experience: I have taught a number of year 11 classes at my secondary school for various subjects including English and History. I also have a 7 year old brother which makes it easier to learn how to communicate with younger pupils. I really enjoy teaching and hope to pursue a career in teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: I would prefer if students were not put under pressure whilst learning (especially younger children!) but can be strict where necessary. It's often easier teaching someone when the atmosphere is relaxed and when the child is not under any pressure but then again different students work well in different atmospheres. Obviously teaching methods can be discused with parents and I will be happy to conform to any requirements that are needed of me. I also believe that teaching requires for tutors to cater for each individual depending on their needs. Whether they are visual, auditorial, or oral learners.. |

| Personal Description: I am currently an undergraduate at Cambridge University going in to my second year of natural sciences. I have a broad interest in the sciences and Maths and have a wide understanding of many aspects of science, practical and theoretical. I have spent two weeks at CERN where I split my time shadowing theoretical and experimental physicists. I also spent a week shadowing an ophthalmologist at Newcastle RVI. |
Teaching Experience: I am tutoring on a regular basis at present. A nine year old who I am teaching maths to GCSE standard maths and a fifteen year old who I teach a mixture of all sciences and some maths. I have assisted in primary schools so have experience with young children and often tutored friends at GCSE and A-level in the run up to exams. |
Tutoring Approach: I have gained immense pleasure from the tutorial system at Cambridge. Not only is it an enjoyable way to learn but the way I am taught has given me a very good understanding of the basic ideas behind a concept which are then built upon. My approach to tutoring is similar in that I hope to give the student the ability to step back from a problem and understand the theories behind it. This is particularly important for Maths and Physics but I find it is also very useful in aiding understanding in Chemistry and Biology. Equally, I am very flexible and often it is the case, especially with GCSE and A level sciences that it is specific methods which must be honed and understood. I do not believe in simply telling a student what to do. Instead getting them to think for themselves, prompting them when necessary allows them to go away and follow similar lines of thought to solve different problems. It also teaches students to be more independent and not seek assistance for every problem they are faced with. |

| Personal Description: Hi, I'm 19 and currently studying medicine at Pembroke College, Oxford. I spent 5 years at Chichester High School for Boys, leaving Year 11 with 9A*s and an A at GCSE. I then won an academic scholarship to Bedales School in Petersfield, where I finished sixth form with 3A*s and an A at A-Level. The two schools were very different, but I feel that experiencing both state and private education means I can get on with pretty much anyone. I will be unavailable for tutoring during Oxford term time, but this amounts to less than half the year and I will be available in the periods before the January and June exam seasons. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a classroom assistant at a local Kumon centre, helping children aged from 11-16 with literacy and numeracy tasks. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm relaxed and friendly, so my sessions are relatively informal. However, I believe that tutoring someone is a serious commitment, so sessions are well structured and tailored to each individual. While conceptual understanding is obviously key, I'm extremely well versed in exam technique, and know how to 'play the game'. I'm confident that one-to-one teaching, especially in the run up to exams, can make all the difference. |

| Personal Description: My name is Jonathan and I recently graduated with a 2:1 in Mathematics from the University of Warwick. At Uni, I divided my time between work, friends and football and immensely enjoyed my University experience. I am friendly, approachable and patient - I enjoy helping to bring the best out of people around me and revel in their success; whether that be my friends, tutees or team-mates on the football pitch! Whilst studying Maths at University I often sought the guidance of others to help me improve - my firsthand experience as both a tutor and tutee means that I understand the needs of both parties. I feel confident in my ability to adapt to my tutees' individual requirements and learning styles and offer dedicated support and patience in order to help them improve. Exams can be hard and stressful; I aim to make the process as fulfilling and stress-less as possible! |
Teaching Experience: I have experience tutoring Maths and Sciences, at both GCSE and A Level, and this summer tutored two University students through degree level Maths exam resits. The success of my tutees has consistently been good and often has exceeded their expectations - exemplified this summer by my university tutees, who both achieved excellent grades in their resits despite failing the same courses just three months earlier. In another context, I have been an enthusiastic Under 7s football coach at Ruddington Village Football Club since August 2006. I have helped start up several teams by helping the children individually and collectively to improve their skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I tailor my tutoring to the needs and strengths of each tutee so that I can help them achieve the best results in the most enjoyable way. I am patient, understanding and dedicated to putting in the work and effort necessary to help my tutees improve and be successful. As well as course content, I also focus on teaching good exam technique, since simple improvements in this area can yield massive improvements in results. Together with my tutee, I set specific goals for each session and overall targets so that we both understand what we are aiming for and my tutee can appreciate the progress that they make. In my experience, often it is a matter of first building confidence in the tutee's own ability, which builds with success in reaching targets and doing well in class or exams. I believe it is important for students to enjoy their work so I endeavour to make this possible! |

| Personal Description: I'm an English Undergraduate at Oxford University and currently in my second year of study. I'm specialising in Old and Middle English, and alongside my course I write for the Oxford Student Newspaper and play the flute in the Oxford University Wind Orchestra. I'm enthusiastic and caring and am involved in the JCR as officer for those with disabilities. Prior to University I attended Wells Cathedral School as a flute specialist for sixth form, and my local secondary school up to and including GCSE level. |
Teaching Experience: I'm tutoring a 14 year old boy for GCSE Science and English alongside his school lessons and have already raised his grade by two levels. Following his tutorials with me this summer, his mother said: "He has gone back to school a different boy: keen to show what he can do, really trying hard, enthusiastic, sharing his homework with us and so much more confident-and I hold you responsible for a good part of this transformation! You helped him so much and I am so grateful to you." She added: "he really is a different boy in his approach-it's brilliant." I also have experience teaching primary school students of various ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm enthusiastic and hope to give tutees confidence in their own ability to succeed. I plan every lesson and start each time with an interactive "How much can you remember?" quiz, to solidify the previous lesson in the student's mind. My style of teaching is active and visual-I like to use colour, pictures and new layouts in notes wherever possible. I believe that hard work is important, but ultimately it is vital to inspire the tutee. This way they can reach their utmost potential through a combination of my input and their engagement with the subject. |

| Personal Description: Hello, my name is Niki, I'm 27 and I moved to London five years ago. I studied Biochemistry at Cardiff University with the intention of being a scientist. I managed to achieve my dream and currently I work for a company called Cancer Research Technology. I was a Molecular Biologist for two years before retraining in a field called Protein Crystallography for which I am currently studying a part time Masters. Although I work in a specialised area of science, I have an avid interest in most fields of science including more popular topics. Due to this I read a lot of popular science books and magazines, and I have many anecdotes relating to scientific topics which come in handy in conversation and would be likely to engage any pupil interested in science. As well as working in science I have also volunteered in Science Communication to the public, including writing articles (including for children) for London Science Museum and the Royal Society, as well as volunteering at Cheltenham Science Festival. Other hobbies and interests of mine include playing guitar, photography, making jewellery from vintage books and martial arts. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst working for Cheltenham Science Festival I have supervised school classes doing experiments, ranging from primary school age (making a hot air balloon from tissue paper, drawing your bones and organs on t-shirts) to secondary school (extracting DNA from a strawberry, making paper model DNA, using chemistry modelling equipment). Whilst at University I volunteered at Cardiff Science week and helped supervise students looking at various science exhibits such as fishing for insects from a pond and making a cell from a balloon (and popping it to look at the inside of the cell). I have also helped supervise four A-level students on separate occasions on a work experience week, whereby I gave them a tour of where I work, explained the science background and why I do certain experiments, showed them demonstrations and got them involved in the experiments as well as preparing educational documents to back up what they had learnt. The last three years I have created instructions and helped run a tutorial for UCL's Drug Design MSc in the use of Protein Modelling software For the Science Museum I created a fun science article on Medicine through the ages for primary school children. I can send you a copy on request. Finally I have helped several peers with writing and revamping their CVs, which has lead to subsequent success in jobs application. This is an area I can also help students with. |
Tutoring Approach: Science can be a daunting subject however due to my experience in science communication I appreciate the need to tailor explanations to different levels of understanding and different types of personality. My intention is to ignite a students curiosity in science as well as teaching, as I think that learning is more efficient when a student enjoys what they are being taught. I am very supportive of questions as working in the scientific field has taught me that there are no stupid questions! My own scientific knowledge comes from understanding a topic rather than learning in a parrot fashion manner, I believe this is a much better way of learning long term and therefore I will use this approach where possible with my students by building up from the basics. I also like to incorporate every day examples as I believe this can make science topics come alive and become relevant to an individual. Whilst the majority of tutoring will be with written materials, I have experience of some simple experiments from Cheltenham Science Festival and I can, either where appropriate to the subject or simply to encourage interest in science, do small science experiments. I would do this on a case by case basis and discuss this with the parent to see if it is desired or appropriate. I think this can be great fun and really open up curiosity about science. For any older pupils I can also offer advice on careers as well as help with CVs/applications to university. Finally as science is such a specific area I would also prefer to familiarise myself with the school syllabus so I can tailor my tutoring to the pupil's needs. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a master's student at the London School of Economics and Political Science, studying a Master of Science in History of International Relations. I completed my undergraduate degree in History at University College London receiving a high 2:1. I went to school in Athens, at the St. Catherine's British Embassy School, receiving 44 out of 45 marks in my International Baccalaureate exams with 7/7 in all the subjects I now tutor. I have always enjoyed working with young people, volunteering with children through various organisations such as Habitat for Humanity and Camden Libraries since the age of 16. I began tutoring and mentoring while at school and have continued to tutor or mentor in some form every year, working with young people from the ages of 3 to 19. I find the process of helping young people excel academically, very rewarding and genuinely enjoy working with young people. I am a very friendly, sociable and approachable person with a creative flair, developed through a love for writing and performing. I put my students' academic needs first and strive to help them as best I can to achieve their desired marks. |
Teaching Experience: Summer Private Tutor- 3 tutees Taught IB-Level and A-Level History, English, Biology, Geography, Theatre Arts - knowledge of different examination boards, including Edexcel, OCR and AQA. Covered problem areas, explained and gave tips for homework, implemented homework and revision techniques, helped with essay structuring and research. Went over past paper questions, the best ways to answer the questions and useful techniques and tips to follow. Set timed tasks and past papers to be completed in the class, which were marked for the next lesson. Gave Extended Essay support: proof reading and improvement advice. Drew on my own my own extensive research skills. Ensured tasks were varied for each lesson in order to engage the students and keep lessons interesting, upbeat and refreshing. Created a friendly, stress-free environment, focusing on trust and having some fun while learning. Maintained open communication with the parents so that they were kept up to date with their children's progress. All tutees boosted their marks in the subject areas taught. One student improved her mark in IB Higher Level History and English A1 from a predicted level 5 to a level 7. Another of the tutees boosted his mark in IB Standard Level Biology from a predicted level 4 to a level 6 and in Standard Level Geography from a predicted level 5 to 6. My other tutee received all A*s in his History, English and Biology A-levels. Received great feedback from my coordinator about parents being pleased with their children's renewed interest in the subjects they were being tutored. Tutoring with Team Up (previously the Young Educational Learning Programme - YELP) Nov-Spring 2011 - 5 tutees Taught GCSE-level History and English Language and Literature. Provided a straightforward, interesting study technique, particularly for English literature and poem/prose analysis, which seemed to be the most challenging area. The aim of the programme was to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieving mostly Cs or Ds but also Bs, to reach their full academic potential. I provided plenty of mentoring and focused on fostering a positive attitude towards learning and further education. Helped students boost their final marks. One student jumped from a B to an A* in English Language and Literature, two from C to an A in History, and one from a D to a C in English. Received very positive feedback from organisers of the programme, both for the improved results attained, but also for the friendly and fun environment created while teaching. Tutoring IGCSE - 2008/2009 - 4 tutees As part of the International Baccalaureate Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme, I tutored IGCSE English Language and Literature, History, Drama, Geography and Biology while in my last two years of school. I mostly covered problem areas, focusing on past paper practice tasks during the hour-long lessons. The results were positive, with all students achieving Bs and above in the tutored subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that what makes me a good tutor is the understanding that teaching is not just about laying down the facts. It is a process of developing a relationship of trust and engaging the student so that he or she genuinely enjoys learning about the subject. I find that once a student enjoys learning, it is much easier to encourage him or her to absorb the material, performing better in exams. I always try to establish this enthusiasm by varying my techniques, understanding my student's academic needs and keeping the atmosphere friendly yet focused. Every student is capable of boosting his or her marks with the right guidance and with practice. The right guidance involves looking at each student as an individual with specific academic requirements and needs and so I never use a sweeping approach to teaching, rather assessing each student's needs on a case by case basis. |
