Personal Description:
Hello! I am 37 years old, originally from Denmark and moved to the UK 12 years ago for my degree. Before teaching, I worked as a monkey veterinary technician in the US, conducted my Masters research on crop-raiding macaques in Indonesia, and helped to run a volunteer expedition in the Amazon. After a couple of years of teaching in secondary school as a Science and Spanish teacher, I heard the call of the wild again and travelled for a year through Mexico and Central America. I am now working for an independent school in the Rochdale area and have gained experience tutoring a wide range of subjects and a wide range of ages.

I have an up to date enhanced CRB.

Teaching Experience:

I completed my teaching degree in 2007 at Canterbury Christ Church University. I trained in two very different types of schools, private Catholic school and selective high school, which gave me the experience to engage students of different abilities and backgrounds. I also received training to teach EAL and SEN students. My teaching qualification is in Science, but as a fluent Spanish linguist I have also taught Spanish to both adults and children. I teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics up to GCSE level, and other subjects I currently teach include Maths up to GCSE level and English up to Key Stage 3.

Tutoring Approach:

Students, young and old, don't like subjects they don't think they can succeed in. My approach is to break down material, relate it to everyday life and interests, and positively reinforce all the way to build up confidence. I am stubborn (!) and I don't give up until it's mastered.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years experience teaching IB, A-Level and GCSE Science and Maths on a one-to-one basis, and have received excellent feedback from students and parents alike.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to explain a principle with a student first, checking that they understand at various points and emphasising that they should stop and ask questions at any point. I then ask the student to explain, from the beginning, whatever the area may have been, in order to further confirm understanding. I also work through exam and textbook questions with the student, offering hints and answers as and when necessary.

I find past papers an excellent way to revise for exams and also to demonstrate the level of understanding needed.

Usually I like to recap/feedback to the student at the end of each lesson, but I can also provide a short summary by email to parents if you feel that could be helpful, in order to track progress.

I'm also happy to advise and assist with university applications, i.e personal statements, interview practice or entrance exams.

During this time I taught a range of subjects on the undergraduate pharmacy degree programme, sat on the University examination board for the award of undergraduate degrees and supervised several PhD students to successful completion of their thesis.

I am now a full-time personal tutor with three years experience and over 40 GB of teaching resources which I use to support my teaching. I am a member of the Tutors Association, an independent regulatory body set up to ensure standards within the tuition industry and as such, I have signed up to their code of ethics.

I also have recent school-based teaching experience at secondary level. I am familiar with all the major examination boards (AQA, OCR, EdExcel, IB). I have worked with children who are gifted and talented and with special educational needs such as Asperger Syndrome, autism, ADHD, partial hearing and dyslexia. Having lived and worked abroad for a number of years, I also have experience of working with students for whom English is an additional language.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in taking a very individual approach to tutoring, adapting approaches and resources to fit the needs of the individual. Prior to commencing tuition, we will agree tuition goals and I will work with these to develop a personalized scheme of learning. During tuition I will monitor student progress and keep records of this so that learning and attainment can be tracked and approaches can be continually adapted to meet the developing needs of the learner.

However, most importantly of all, I believe learning should be fun. I am friendly and approachable and I work hard to ensure that students enjoy having tuition, which ultimately will maximise the progress they make.

I can carry out tuition in your home, in my own home, online or at an agreed public place (such as a library).

This means that all too often any misunderstandings go unexpressed and are carried forward unaided. My tutoring methodology ensure that I can personalize my lesson plan to the abilities of the student. I am able to gauge the level of their understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. I also try and provide students with an alternative approach to solve problems whenever possible. I ask for regular feedback from students, and that helps me tailor my lessons to suits their specific needs. Whatever the end goal, one-to-one tutoring by me offers enormous benefits to students. I have had encouraging responses from the students I have taught in the past as a testament of my effective tutoring methodology.
