I am 33 years old and currently live in London. I am originally from Derbyshire in the north of England. Hello.
My name is Sarah and I am a postgraduate student at the University of Bristol. After graduating in Anatomical Sciences in 2006, I worked for the Anatomy department at Bristol, did a research masters in Osteoarchaeology (i.e. bone archaeology), and I am now in my second year of a PhD in the same subject.

I am an enthusiastic and friendly teacher who would like to help students to achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating, I have worked as an Anatomy demonstrator at the University of Bristol. This involves teaching the anatomy of both humans and animals to small groups of veterinary science and medical students. Part of my job has been to devise new and fun ways to understand complex ideas in the form of diagrams, models and online tutorials.

I have been heavily involved in the 'Outreach' scheme at Bristol, which has seen me travelling to various schools around Bristol and teaching students from Primary school level right up to A level standard Human Biology. This aspect of my job has been my favourite!

I have also tutored groups on basic biological sciences and neuroscience. During this time, I have lived as a tutor in halls of residence and student houses, which has given me plenty of experience in understanding the problems many young people face academically.

My job has required me to take a course in teaching at the University, and so I am up to date with modern teaching techniques. I have also taught on various courses in the Archaeology department at Bristol.

Tutoring Approach:

Everyone has a different way of learning (mine is to use lots of diagrams), and so my experience in different ways of teaching allows me to change my style to one which works for each individual student.

Generally, I try to make tutorials relevant, using modern situations to explain why learning that topic is important and interesting. Where possible, I use lots of colours and diagrams, and I often try to link topics together. I also try to test students constantly along the way- Its a massive confidence boost to realise you are learning so much, and it is also helpful to practice so that the exams don't seem so scary!

I am happy to provide revision notes and also feedback or progress reports for both the student and parents if required.

I like to find out in advance what topics students struggle with most so I can prepare notes from my own previous files and text books then go through a check list periodically with them. At the end of each section I like to give a short quiz to make sure everything has been understood and repeat the lesson if anything is unclear.

Personal Description:
I am currently a student at Brunel University (London) reading for a PhD in Biological Sciences. Prior to this I completed my MSc in Molecular Medicine and Cancer Research; also at Brunel. My BSc is in Chemistry with a speciality in Biochemistry.
It is my ambition to become a lecturer at a university after completion of my PhD so that I can continue to share my knowledge and experience with others who are dedicated to learning.

Teaching Experience:

While at university in Greece I tutored friends and younger students regularly in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and English. I really enjoyed helping others with their learning, and this gave me a huge sense of fulfilment that what I was doing was truly worthwhile.
Since I moved to the UK I have not had much time to dedicate to tutoring, but now I have settled into my PhD I have decided to re-ignite my passion for teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is important to know what you are going to teach before you teach it. I invest time in my preparation and reading before the tutoring session. I make it a goal to learn something myself too because it's a learning experience for both the tutor and student. I do not fully rely on stock knowledge or things I have taught in the past, but keep myself constantly up to date.
It will be essential at the beginning of the sessions to identify the needs of the student which will include exploring their strengths and any challenges.
I will be dedicated to the students' success, and I will ensure that every minute I spend with the student is productive and worthwhile.
I will guarantee to facilitate sessions in a clear, concise, interesting and effective manner so that the student enjoys learning, and can achieve.
I will use a variety of resources to help the students learn and understand. I will not just rely on text books but have a range of materials and activities that will help the students reach their full potential.
I am supportive, friendly, welcoming and have a sense of humour. I believe that tutors need to, not only be professional, but responsive and helpful in order to encourage, inspire and build a good rapport with students (and where appropriate parents/guardians).
I am flexible, organised and patient. Lessons may not always go the way either party might expect, but this flexibility and patience allows me to change the direction of a lesson to ensure that the student is continually learning and developing.

With a high first class degree in Physics from the University of York, for over three years now I have given tuition in Mathematics and Physics for all qualifications up to and including A Level as well as the Sciences to GCSE.

Teaching Experience:

After various school placements, including teaching in St Aidan's Harrogate (ranked among the highest achieving comprehensive schools in the country), I have helped a multitude of pupils ranging from as young as 8 through to mature students. I have experience of teaching AQA, Edexcel and OCR board syllabuses including IGCSE as well as Pre-U. I am happy to offer tuition for all other syllabuses as well, for example WJEC, the International Baccalaureate (IB) and for free-standing maths qualifications.
Additionally, I offer tuition to adults wanting to improve their maths understanding and skills, for example to help with their career or to pass QTS skills tests etc.
Students and parents have offered positive feedback from the results attained after my tuition including a great improvement in their grade and confidence. For example, a student's grade in A Level Physics improved from originally an E to an A after my tuition, while others attend their preferred schools after help with revision for their entrance exams.
I have helped several students with Asperger Syndrome, those with dyslexia and students who are home-schooled or had to move school due to behavioural difficulties or medical conditions. Additionally, I have had training for and taught students who did not live with their biological parents.

Tutoring Approach:

I find I can relate to students in a calm and patient manner and I have enjoyed helping them through difficulties with their subjects. I endeavour to find and solve the problems students have in their understanding to give them a firmer grasp of the topic, with the benefits from this being increased confidence and improved results.

I am an Imperial College graduate in Biomedical Engineering (masters).
I was born in Italy from Italian parents, but have lived in the UK since I was 6 years old (I'm perfectly bilingual). I attended the European School in Culham, near Oxford, before moving to London for university.
I am a friendly and outgoing person, when I'm not busy with uni work I like to be in the company of friends, enjoy cinema, live music and playing/watching sports, particularly football and squash.

Teaching Experience:

Over my first two years at university, I helped some As and A-level students from my old school, especially during their exam period (i.e.: one on one revision sessions, helping out with coursework and writing sets of revision notes) in Maths, Biology and Physics.
Early in 2011 I joined the Blue Tutors agency, where my teaching skills were assessed and received full accreditation.
In October 2013 I did weekly one-on-one GCSE maths lessons for the month leading up to an exam. As well as the lessons I made revision notes for the student, whose mark increased from C- to B.
From January to April 2014 I was Project Coordinator and voluntary teacher in weekly extra curricular activity "Code Club", a basic computer programming workshop at Pimlico Academy. Generally about a dozen 13-14 year old students attended.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is generally quite friendly: I believe that at a subconscious level, a student will be much more inclined to listen to and learn from a person they trust and appreciate. However, I also believe the teaching style must be suited to the student, and largely depends on the subject being taught.
A particular technique which I have learnt from Blue Tutors and have tried to implement ever since, is to try and lead the student to the answer by asking the right questions, rather than just giving him the answer.
