| Personal Description: I am married and have a 2 year old son, we have recently relocated to Chester. I have a PGCE in Science, a Degree in Environmental Science, and A-Levels in Physics, Biology and Chemistry. I have 10 years teaching experience, have worked as a Head of Subject for 6 years, and have led my Faculty in coursework moderation. I have also been learning Spanish at a night class, so I can still remember what it is like to be a student. |
Teaching Experience: I have 10 years teaching experience, and have taught Years 7 to 13 (with the bulk of my teaching in Years 12 and 13). I have also tutored a number of other students through A-Levels and GCSEs. I have recently relocated to Chester, but prior to this I worked in 2 schools in Essex, where I became Head of Biology. I have been successfully through two OFSTED inspections, and have been a mentor to a number of trainee teachers. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to make links between Science and modern culture. Many aspects of Science make it into films and the media, and these provide focal points for discussions (whether the Science is correct or not!). I believe that this makes the content more applicable and memorable. As a practicing teacher, I have a good knowledge of the Science curriculum, and am also aware of misconceptions shown by many students. I try to address these areas, in addition to the areas requested by the tutee. I like to use Powerpoint presentations during tutoring. These Powerpoints are linked to the National Curriculum and offer visual stimuli and multimedia resources. |

| Personal Description: I love all the main subjects in a proper curriculum! I was originally born in Canada, and have been living in the UK for twenty-three years (my parents brought me over as a teenager). I went to a Canadian high-school, took GSCE maths and A levels in North Wales, and went on to study in Manchester. I am a real teacher! I am fascinated with teaching a subject in the most effective way, whatever the level. This includes such ideas as student motivation and hierarchical order of subject matter. I think that there is such a thing as a teaching personality and that the essential qualities are benevolence, charisma, and humour; I have these qualities. I find it easy to befriend my students, gain their trust, while still keeping a pleasant, authoritative detachment. I like children: I am charmed by their enthusiasm, openness, and receptiveness. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a tutor for the past eleven years. In terms of classroom experience, I have held positions in Montessori schools (nursery), and have been a substitute teacher (or "cover supervisor") covering all subjects in English comprehensive schools. |
Tutoring Approach: The idea of hierarchy is essential to my teaching. One must learn from the concrete to the abstract in order to have one's knowledge grounded in reality, as opposed to disjointed, floating ideas. The subject of history, aside from being an essential subject in itself, is a helpful pedagogical tool. History provides a natural hierarchy for the learning of mathematics and the sciences. History also provides a background and context for the appreciation of literature. |

| Personal Description: I am a second year Medical Student at Warwick. I love music and dance, particularly ballet. My friends would describe me as approachable and sincere. |
Teaching Experience: I helped set up a dance society at university and as such am responsible for teaching people dance routines! I have to be very clear and concise in what I am saying, very patient and aware at what pace I need to take things depending on the ability of the people who turn up. I have never formally taught anybody but would like to think that I could hold a conversation with anyone, an important transferable skill for a would-be doctor. |
Tutoring Approach: Very much play things by ear at the first session so the tutee can get to know me and I can get to know them and find out a little about their learning style. I would ask for the student to text me/call me about things they would like me to go through when I next come, so I have a 'heads-up' for preparation and we can work on the weak spots! |

| Personal Description: I am currently working as a junior doctor having qualified in Medicine with Distinction from King's College and also received a BSc in Psychology with First Class Honours from the same institution. I have a distinguished educational history, including winning prestigious prizes such as the British Pharmacological Society's Medical Student Prize. These attainments have come not from innate intelligence (though I do have a fair bit of that), but from a solid understanding of what is required to perform well in exams as well as positive mental training. I enjoy film, photography, theatre, reading, writing, and travelling. |
Teaching Experience: I have a number of years' experience providing private tuition with all students meeting or surpassing their expectations. I am familiar with the OCR, AQA-A, AQA-B and WJEC specifications for Psychology A-level, and OCR and AQA Sociology specification. In addition, I hold Visiting Appointments as a Research Fellow at King's College London (Institute of Psychiatry) and Lecturer at Deakin University, Australia teaching psychological medicine and have been involved in designing and teaching undergraduate courses in the Sociology of Health and Illness. I have published and presented work at national and international conferences on my innovations in teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience the main problems that students have is not their level of knowledge, but their exam technique, writing skills, critical thinking/analytic skills, and conceptual understanding. Students also have difficulty discerning what information they and do and do not need to know. So my focus is on challenging my students to develop their skills and exam technique, and to familiarise them with their specifications and assessment objectives. I also offer positive mental training (used by top athletes) to help improve performance. The mental preparing for exams is not that dissimilar to preparing for an olympic sport! Motivation and willingness to engage in private tuition are keys to success I cannot instill. For this reason I require the student, and not (just) the parent/guardian to contact me. A good fit between the tutor and tutee is also important. Even the best tutor in the world will not get very far with a student if they don't 'click'. That is why I assess whether the relationship is workable before committing to it. Different students have different learning styles and interests. I identify these and tailor my teaching style to the individual student. I have experience with working with students with learning difficulties, physical and mental illnesses, or current social/family adversity. |

| Personal Description: Hi, I'm Tamara. I am 20 years old and am studying Psychology at Bangor University, North Wales. During my school education I mostly enjoyed Maths and Biology and studied them up to A Level. At University I spend my free time dancing and playing netball. I am also part of the History of Art society and very much enjoy learning about art and its use in society. |
Teaching Experience: Over my gap year I was trained as a teacher and taught English, Maths, Science and PE in Kenya. I taught ages 6 to 15, both individually and in class. I have also been an assistant teacher in a paediatric ward in a hospital. For my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award community service, I helped in a local children's nursery. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe tutoring requires less lecturing and teaching and more of developing an understanding in the student. Tutoring is usually additional help to school work and therefore the student already knows the answer but just doesn't realise it yet, and so questioning them and probing their knowledge, together the tutor and tutee can develop an understanding of the material required and an answer to the question. I prefer to use conversation when tutoring as this not only allows the tutee to feel more relaxed, but also allows me to work out how the tutee best learns and at the end of each session how much they have understood and what I should cover over the next session. |

| Personal Description: I am currently undertaking graduate entry medicine at Imperial College London having previously done a BSc in Biochemistry at Imperial and a MSc at Oxford in immunology. In addition i am also a subwarden in university halls, this involves ensuring the pastoral care and discipline of the students whilst allowing them to make mistakes and grow into adults. On top of my education i am a second lieutenant in the royal army medical corp. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently teaching a range of students form GCSE to university level. In addition to subject specific tuition i am helping several students with medical school applications and university applications; this involves advising on work experience, entrance exam preparation and interview skills. In addition to my formal tutoring i also help several first year undergraduate medical students and graduate medical student get to grips with the core principles of physiology and pathology. |
Tutoring Approach: i believe that students should not be spoon fed or just be taught to a syllabus as this results in stunting the students intellectual growth. Students should learn to question and be inquisitive and this is something i try to instil in my students. However, if someone is finding a topic particularly more challenging i try to find everyday relatable concepts that can be used to aid in their understanding. Often students have the ability and knowledge but lack the confidence to apply it; i try to develop their belief in themselves which will pay dividends in the future. |

| Personal Description: I am a Research Scientist at Dundee University. I have a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry. I enjoy teaching and have helped many students achieve high grades. |
Teaching Experience: I have over 15 years tutoring experience in Mathematics, Science Subjects and Primary English. Lots of students that I have had the pleasure of tutoring have achieved grades exceeding their original expectations. Lots of extremely satisfied students (and off course their parents). I can provide references from my past and present students. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy teaching and always try to make the subjects of Science and Mathematics both FUN and ENJOYABLE. I always try to make difficult concepts very easy to understand. This builds up the confidence that the students often need and they then start to enjoy the subjects and develop enquiring minds. They start becoming more inquisitive and thus start to enjoy their subjects and start to excel in them. I also teach Scottish syllabus (Standard to Higher Grades in Science and Maths) My advice is always to start learning early, not just before the exams are about to start. Although I can help students who start to panic at the last minute. |

| Personal Description: I am an energetic and creative student teacher. I have recently completed my life science degree at The University of Manchester, and decided that my passion of science and teaching should form the basis of my career. I am now training to be a secondary school science teacher. Having had a tutor myself during GCSE, I know how valuable the experience can be. I am ready to provide the subject knowledge and assistance needed to pass exams in an interesting and enjoyable way. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently training to be a teacher, having successfully completed my first placement and currently training at my second placement. Both are vibrant fully compreshensive secondary schools. |
Tutoring Approach: I apply a range of strategies to ensure that students understand the lesson outcomes. I tend to determine the teaching styles based on the best learning style of the student. In any case I try to make the lessons as interesting and simple as I can but in line with the examining board. I enjoy individual one-to-one tutoring as this gives learner their pace and learning styles, but can also teach small groups where i can differentiate work by activity if they are of different abilities. Where possible I employ a lot of visuals, power point illustrations based on availability of ICT facilities. I am friendly and approachable. Having been through the system recently myself, I understand what students go through. I am available to offer advise outside tuition time on issues such as exam nerves ect. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a third-year English Literature student at Newcastle University and am interested and enthusiastic about tutoring. During the University/school holidays, I live in Lincoln and have my own car, meaning that I can provide my own transport. I am a patient, reliable individual who loves working with children of all ages. I am passionate about reading and writing, and furthermore, have achieved Grade 8 piano, Grade 5 musical theory and Grade 3 flute. I have A-level grade As in English literature and Psychology, as well as a B in music. I also have an AS level C in French. I am fully competent at a number of subjects up to GCSE standard, having achieved 5 A* and 5 As in GCSE, including English, Maths and Double Science. I would love to be a tutor, as it would be great experience for me, and furthermore I would find great pleasure in helping others to understand a subject that I enjoy. I am flexible in the hours that I work, and am willing to work anywhere in the Lincoln area. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently completing a TEFL/TESOL qualification with i-to-i, and am hoping to teach English abroad after I have graduated this summer. During the course, I have learnt many skills such as the best ways to teach grammar awareness, as well as how to teach young learners. I have also learnt how to plan lessons effectively, and feel that the course has helped my experience as a prospective teacher. Whilst at William Farr Comprehensive School in Welton, I assisted in teaching music lessons to younger children in the school. Seeing older members of the school enjoy playing music helped them to be enthusiastic in what they were learning, realising that playing music can be fun at whatever standard. During school, I also worked as a classroom assistant at Monks Abbey Primary School for a week, teaching year two children. I got on well with all of the children, and particularly enjoyed helping them to read aloud and spell. |
Tutoring Approach: It is essential to have patience when tutoring others, and to listen to the problems tutees might have with certain aspects of a subject. I feel that is important to communicate with tutees as to how they like to learn, and for this reason I would work around you and/or your child about what teaching method would be best. I would plan well-structured lessons in advance, and ensure that homework is given after each session. |
