Personal Description:
My name is Ed. I recently graduated from Durham University with 1st class honours in Maths and Physics. I achieved straight A result with six A-levels including Maths, Further Maths, German, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese.

I am an experienced tutor and have previously tutored students from a variety of schools and institutions. I am very patient and my primary focus is to help you achieve your goals and objectives.

Whilst currently working in the finance industry, I also work in my spare time as a private tutor two top private tutoring companies in central London.

I am flexible and can travel to you. I am available in the evenings on weekdays and any time on the weekends.

Please contact me for further enquiries. I can provide you references upon request.

Teaching Experience:

Private Tutor at Bonas Macfarlane, London, July 2010 - Present
I tutor a variety of subjects at different levels from primary schools to A-levels. I teach Maths, Physics, Chemistry, German and Chinese. I also offer service on giving academic advice as well as interview techniques for entering into top schools and universities in the UK.

Private Tutor at Bright Young Things, London, September 2012 - Present
Bright Young Things is the second largest tutoring agency after Bonas Macfarlane whom I also work for. With Bright Young Things my focus had been Maths at A-level and GCSE.

University Marker, Department of Mathematics, Durham University, October 2009 - May 2010
I mentored second year Maths undergraduates at Durham University. I have learned to work through the arguments and thought processes of others and give constructive feedback.

Sixth Form Tutor, Framwellgate Sixth Form College, Durham, October 2006 - June 2009
I tutored Maths (GCSE, A-Level), Chemistry (GCSE, A-level), German (GCSE, A-Level) and Chinese (GCSE, A-Level) at Durham Framwellgate Sixth Form College for three years. I helped all of my tutees achieve more than what they were initially targeting to achieve. I also learned to prepare teaching materials and adopt various teaching methods.

Teaching Assistant, Student Associate Scheme, Middlesbrough, June to July 2008
Co-operated between the Training and Developing Agency (TDA) and the target schools in the Northeast, I worked alongside experienced teachers to gain classroom teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is simple and effective. The general framework is to go through general concepts that are fundamental to student's understanding on the subject through the use of simple examples. I will then reinforce the message and encourage students to work on more specific and challenging problems. Confidence is key and it is vital that my tutees are constantly motivated and encouraged in order to self-develop both at an academic and personal level.

I also strive to make lessons as interactive as I can. I understand the different learning needs of different students. I will always be flexible and will do my best to help you succeed.

Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Christopher, I've taught Science and Maths for over 10 years. At present I am teaching Chemistry at a prestigious North London co-educational school having previously taught at City of London School for Girls. I began tutoring in 2005, after graduating from Oxford University (Worcester College 2001 - 2005), with a Masters in Chemistry. Additionally, I have worked as a Science and Maths teacher on the Government's Life Long Learning Scheme. Professionally I have served as a consultant within the environmental science/engineering sector for a large multinational corporation.

Teaching Experience:

I am a friendly, approachable Oxford educated tutor with over 10 years and 5000 hours tutoring experience, comprising a mix of one-to-one tuition, teaching within small groups as well as larger classroom environments. I have extensive knowledge of all the major examination boards with particular expertise in the OCR, Edexcel, WJEC and AQA syllabuses.

I am currently teaching Chemistry at a top independent North London School, having previously taught both Chemistry and Maths at City of London School for Girls. Earlier experience included working as a Mathematics and Science teacher on the government-funded 'Life Long Learning' Scheme, where certain pupils were affected with learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Additionally, I have passed the GAMSAT medical entrance exam required for certain medical schools within the UK, so can assist with the preparation required for this difficult test. I also provide numeracy and literacy tuition for those sitting professional or higher education exams and Armed Forces tests.

Undergraduate tuition is offered to those students studying for degrees that incorporate chemistry modules e.g. Business and Chemistry, foundation courses etc.

I cover Central London zones 1 - 2.

Rates: GCSE and A level: 40 per hour.

GAMSAT: 40 per hour.

I have an extensive list of references from previously satisfied clients for your perusal.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to get the very best out of students using a variety of teaching methods with a strong emphasis on exam technique. I have helped pupils of all ages and abilities both on a one-to-one basis as well as within small groups/large classroom environments.

Every person is different, and every person has his/her own grasping ability whether at home or in school. With this in mind I am very flexible and adaptable in my approach to teaching, and endeavour to create a learning environment where the pupil can thrive.

Personal Description:
I'm 27 years old, a graduate of the University of London (MA) and full-time tutor with around four years' experience.

I received a distinction in Latin as part of my MA Classics degree, and continue to enjoy studying and teaching both Latin and ancient Greek.

Teaching Experience:

Extensive experience in teaching prep-school, GCSE, A-level and degree-level Latin to ages ranging between 7 to 40+ yrs.

Select achievements of 2016:

Pupil i: A pupil of mine for c three years, he achieved a B in the Westminster School Latin Challenge 13+ examination (A-Level standard) and has earned himself a place at the school.

Pupil ii.: Came to me with almost no knowledge of Latin, having found it tedious during the year. Within 12 weeks she took the exam and recieved a B at Level 1 Latin.

Pupil iii.: A long-standing pupil, she received as average a First for the essays I provided tuition on (Year 1 of her BA Classical Studies).

Select achievements of 2015:

Pupil i. (Prep) Bright though receiving consistently low marks in his Latin and Greek mock papers, he achieved an A in the end-of-year examinations in both subjects after c six months tuition, and recieved a place at a top London school.

Pupil ii. (GCSE) Suffering from dyslexia and receiving low marks on her language papers, she eventually achieved an A after c six months of tuition. Now studying at a top London girls' school.

Tutoring Approach:

I use the first lesson to assess the extent of the pupil's grammatical knoweldge by asking for the recitation of tables and perhaps a translation of a small piece of prose or verse matched in difficulty to the pupil's level.

After this assessment, the following lessons are based around the needs of the pupil, with practice questions and passages forming the basis of our learning.

Imperative to my lessons are a sense of humour and frequent chats - this provides relief, which in turn stimulates concentration and allows for a rapport to to be built with the pupil.

Some previous references:

"He is patience, sympathetic, and good in tailoring his teaching method to suit the need and ability level of his student. He is currently helping my son to prepare for the 13 plus common entrance scholarship exams for Latin and English, of whom is aiming for the Westminster School in 2016, year 9 entry.

Anthony has a good sense of humour and a very relaxed manner, that makes my kid feeling easy and comfortable to work on the subjects. A wonderful kind tutor who encourage and motivate my child to achieve the best. My son is the top of his year in Latin since Year 6, 100 per cent creditability to Anthony.

I would have no hesitations to recommending Anthony."

"An extremely engaging and enthusiastic character; his ardour delicately forces the student to love the discipline for themselves, and he has greatly increased my personal interest in the subjects of Latin and Classics. Not much I can think to fault by ways of teaching, would highly recommend."

"Anthony helped my son over the holidays with some grammar he was finding difficult. He fitted us in at short notice and went out of his way to be helpful - running off sheets and practice questions in the target areas. Would thoroughly recommend Anthony, he's patient and gets his message across clearly and effectively."

"Has wonderful personality that makes it easier to listen to him and at the same time enjoy the lessons. He helped me a lot with my essays when it came to the structure which is essential in the Grade A criteria. Highly recommendable."

Please note that for pupils outside a three mile radius of my house and who require my travelling to them, there is an additional charge for travelling expenses/time taken in addition to my standard hourly rate. This is to be negotiated with the client before details are exchanged.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
From an early age I have had a passionate interest in singing and have gained grade 1-8. I have sung in a variety of classical contexts and have performed in choirs and operas as a Soloist.
In addition to this I have a love of travelling and have worked on a kibbutz in Israel which was very interesting and character forming.
As part of my work in schools I have travelled to Greece as part of a teacher development programme. This involved trips with colleagues where research was carried out on the Acropolis and the Minoan Civilisation and have fed this in to my own development as a Teacher of History.
I have also been part of a range of school trips; Battlefields in France, Rome and London to name some of the more high profile visits.
Generally, I enjoy exercising, particularly swimming and walking, I have a love of good food and wine and relish socialising. I also enjoy literature both classical and modern.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History for nearly eighteen years both in UK Secondary Schools and in Private International Schools abroad. I have a real passion for teaching and have been praised by Ofsted, parents and students for my enthusiasm, commitment and very high examination results.
My career began in Cornwall in the late 1990's in a wonderful rural setting with a great deal of local History. i spent seven years teaching there and I had over eighty percent of the students choosing History as a GCSE option.
I was very fortunate to teach in a very prestigious private school abroad and managed to raise the level of interest in History as a GCSE option significantly and achieved amazing results in both schools.
I also have a great deal of experience of teaching GCSE English and English as a Foreign Language both in the UK and overseas.
After eighteen years my love for teaching has never ceased and I hope to engage more students and create a real passion for History for many more years to come.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring varies a great deal from student to student depending on their level and ability.
I always show a very supportive and flexible approach if needed and a firmer style if examinations are approaching. Students always feel secure and enjoy our lessons together and always achieve a pleasing result.
I have also taught a great deal of English to Second Language students especially when I taught in Greece and Cyprus and was amazed how quickly they could improve with one to one tuition.
I am available to teach in the evenings and over the Summer holidays as well
