Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher for 14 years. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I have worked in several schools now, gaining experience from working with a variety of learners of various ages and learning styles. I have worked within the requirements of more than one examing board, therefore I am quite familiar with all exam formats. I have been a tutor also for 10 years with very good results. Students do like me within first session, gaining confidence and self reassurance that they are capable of a lot already. Only some issues need re-addressing, building on their prior knowledge. Tutoring Approach:

Within the first session, I discover the individual needs of my learners, their strengths and weaknesses. Then I devise a plan to address the whole programme of study within the number of weeks available, so no topic is ignored. I work simultaneously on exam requirements, but also on skill development, skills that the student can benefit from, outside the boundaries of a specific exam format. Students find themselves forgetting the time, often engrossed in their work, mentally challenged and stimulated. I set short homework at times, so that students can practise independently on those skills they develop with me, being reassured that they can transfer those skills further. I do provide learning materials which I do personalize for each student. I am very likable and I do make young learners be at ease within minutes of meeting them.

I have been teaching in Further & Higher education for the past 17 years & I am Head of Subject & Senior Lecturer at a College with Beacon status in the North West. Last year, I carried out some regular private tuition & was able to turn E grades into A grades at A2 level. This was very satisfying for me & the student concerned was able to go on & take a degree in Law, something he wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

Personal Description:
After leaving school, I studied at Nottingham University for a BA in Music, then for a MA in Theology from the London School of Theology. Having worked for a while at an inner-city secondary school, I went on to complete a research masters and am currently studying for a PhD. My own interests are principally in theology, philosophy and politics, but also the arts, culture and social work. I am married, have two children, and am a keen football fan (Manchester United).

I have taught Religious Studies at secondary school and I have also worked as a freelance tutor at various points over several years for students studying Philosophy and Ethics, History, English and Music at a range of levels.

Tutoring Approach:

Education is about more than being able to pass exams, although this is obviously important! I have worked hard for my qualifications and belive in disciplined, productive study; however for some students getting the highest possible grade is not necessarily the most important thing. Each person is an individual with different strengths and weaknesses, so I try to structure how I teach around individual needs and goals. When teaching I also believe that giving people self confidence, an ability to think critically and an enjoyment of the subject is an important part of helping them to improve.

At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I have had very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

I am a professional actor and graduate from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and have been working in the private tuition industry for over seven years for various agencies, most prominently The Tutors Group. Before drama school I worked as a Primary School teaching assistant and drama teacher for two years, after graduating from King's College London with a 2:1 in my BA (Hons) English Literature & Language degree. I went straight to university from Norwich High School for Girls in Norfolk. So I have travelled all the way across England in my pursuit of study! I always wanted to tutor because I knew how I worked for all my GCSEs, A-Levels and my BA, and I was fed up with the media claiming exams were getting easier for kids: teenagers today work super hard, as I did! During the morning session, I am currently working in a Year One class in this south London school and thriving on aiding the children specifically with their literacy, reading and speaking skills as well as exploring numeracy work.
I lead certain lessons including story time and circle time.
I support key groups of children within the class and am able to use my initiative to plan, deliver and assess their learning in order to encourage progression.
I have vast experience in creating my own resources using ICT, and creating artistic displays to proudly exhibit the children's work.
I have taken courses in Early Literacy Support, encouraging creative and inclusive teaching especially for children with English as an additional language and complex special needs children. I also have training in "Letters and Sounds" Phonics, and "A First Workshop on Autism".
During the afternoon session, I support a child in Year Two with Autism. I plan and prepare all his lessons, working towards targets which I and the class teacher have set for him; these include phonics, counting and social skills. I use music as a reward system for the boy, and his singing has greatly improved his speech quality and communication skills.
I have extensive training in Autistic Spectrum Conditions, undertaken with Southwark, covering various aspects including history, sensory integration and behavioural management.
I work with various children with complex special needs within school, including children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Galactosemia, and have worked closely with speech and language therapists and learning mentors.
I offer one to one support outside of lesson time in the form of music lessons for special needs children; I prepare and provide my own resources and find singing with my students extremely rewarding.
I am in the process of setting up an after-school drama club for Key Stage One students at the school, having directed the infant school Christmas play this and last year.

I have worked as a teaching assistant in an Outstanding inner-city primary school, and before training at drama school was planning to take a post-graduate course in primary school teaching, a desire much encouraged by my class teacher and head of school. I have just graduated from my MA in acting at one of the most prolific drama schools in the country (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School); as an experienced dramatic performer and director, I enjoy effectively using these skills to aid children in their learning, leading to a warm, encouraging and happy learning atmosphere. I went straight from university into drama school, and now work as a tutor and a professional actress. I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have helped children get into some of the best schools in the country, as well as aiding older children in getting the A*s they want at GCSE and A-level.

Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

I have now been tutoring ages 7-18 for 4 years, and have had brilliant feedback from my various jobs:

Tutoring Approach:

I am a confidence-buildling tutor.

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.



Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

I graduated with first class honours in 2014 having studied Business Economics for 3 years at Nottingham Trent University. Since leaving University I have pursued a career in financial services, which has given me the perfect opportunity to apply many of the skills I developed throughout education to real-world situations. I have had a keen interest in maths and statistics since a young age, demonstrating my ability by achieving an A at GCSE in Maths and an A in Statistics. This was a contributing factor towards my study of economics given how the two subjects interlink, achieving a B at Economics at A level. All of these skills were brought together at University, with my degree heavily reliant on the use of statistics as well as algebra and other important maths concepts. I am keen to help you/your child achieve their maths goals, and I hope that I can use my use of maths in my every day work to show how important maths and economics skills are both academically and for the real world.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my time at school, sixth form and university I was always keen to teach peers both as part of large groups in class and on an individual basis, something I enjoyed because it helped me to develop my own skills and also because of the reward of seeing someone else do well as a result of my help. This has included me teaching a fellow GCSE student at the time of my own studying, as well as more recently helping a colleague with her entrance exams for her PGCE teaching exams. I also completed a week of work experience at my local primary school, which was an opportunity for me to develop my coaching skills in the best environment.

Tutoring Approach:

Having personally varied my own learning techniques throughout education dependent on the subject and the learning environment, I understand that every individual learns in a different way; I will use the early stages of tutoring to gauge the needs and learning styles of the tutee, and alter my teaching to these needs. Whilst I am keen believer that each individual has their own learning style, I also believe it is important that everyone tries new styles to work out which is most effective for them. Personally I like the use of extensive notes when first learning to understand a concept or theory, and then more concise notes that can I can use to prompt myself later on. Finally, I think that encouraging someone to regularly sit previous exam papers can develop the skills in a more applied environment whilst also helping a student to be more relaxed when it comes to the real exam situation.
