Personal Description:
I have taught mathematics for over 20 years now and enjoy keeping up to date with lesson delivery, whilst maintaining a keen interest in how we learn about numbers and maths generally. Towards the end of my career I became interested in our parents and how many struggle with the often complicated explanations offered in some texts or online explanations. I am now semi retired and enjoy offering some simple private tuition in addition to continuing to work part time in schools. I am a friendly, down to earth tutor a good sense of humour.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching in schools for over 20 years with experience in primary numeracy, GCSE's, A levels. I translate complex concepts into ordinary language and everyday life

I also now teach privately for the rest of the week from my home (please view the map for location)
I have enjoyed teaching some very gifted students as well as those who find the subject quite a challenge, as indeed we all do from time to time

Tutoring Approach:

I now mainly prefer to teach adults up to GCSE but as long as you can make daytime sessions I can help. I use an intuitive approach wherever possible. It has been noted that I explain concepts quite clearly and students can be surprised at the ease with which they pick up previously difficult concepts.

I also prepare students for exams and offer guidance on exam technique.

I usually work with whatever you bring to the session, unless a specific topic needs covering in more depth

Personal Description:
My greatest interest is my family - my husband and our four children aged 18, 17, 11, and 9. We enjoy many activities together, with the highlight being our summer holidays where we self-drive to various places in Europe.

I also love learning and have just started my masters degree in maths.

As the mother of four children I have to be well organised and efficient. I enjoy a challenge and love teaching. I can work well alone or as part of a team and I believe I am an effective communicator.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching maths from Entry Level through to Level 2 for teaching assistants, adults in the community and young offenders. I also teach "Keeping up with the children" courses for parents wanting to help their children. I have also been tutoring children in Years 10 & 11 on a 1-1 basis to help them with their GCSE Maths at Swavesey Village college.

In the last two years I have been working as a maths teacher at an independent secondary school in Cambridge.

I have recently been appointed the Head of Mathematics at a local prep school which I am enjoying very much. However this does mean that I am now only available to tutor during the school holiday.

Tutoring Approach:

I thoroughly enjoy my work. I relate well to children and adults. I believe its important to instill confidence and subscribe to an active learning approach with a variety of resources where possible. I also use a variety of alternative methods to meet individual learning needs as I firmly believe that one size does not fit all.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate from Oxford University, with a great passion for the subjects I studied: Classics, Modern Languages and Ancient History.

Teaching Experience:

I mainly teach students who are finding their subject hard to get to grips with, or those wanting to push themselves further before an exam or interview. In both cases it is important for me to help my students enjoy the subject, as this is how they will get the most out of it. I use a mixture of the type of teaching they will get in school, along with some informal and extra-curricular elements to enhance their experience of the subject.

I teach students from young ages up to undergraduate level and beyond. My preferred method is using online tutoring via Skype, allowing students to feel comfortable in their own homes without the need to travel.

Tutoring Approach:

The most important thing with private tuition is to have it tailored to your needs, as this is probably what you are missing in school if you find a subject hard. I am very happy to discuss with you what you want to get out of your tuition, and following on from that either to focus on particular things or give a wide overview. Most importantly through helping you to understand more about the subject I hope to help you learn to love it!

Personal Description:
* Taught English GCSE for over 16 years

* GCSE examiner

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English at KS3, 4 and 5 for over 15 years. I am experienced at preparing students for SATS exams, GCSE and A level. Additionally I have helped adults to improve their reading and writing skills from helping them to update their CV to sitting an exam. I am also an examiner for AQA and OCR. I currently teach GCSE English and Functional English to KS4 students.

Tutoring Approach:

When we meet I will initially assess your child's needs and set out clear targets for us to focus on. I will offer lots of guidance and coaching in your child's areas of weakness. Your child's progress is reviewed at the end of each term and new targets are set as appropriate. I provide an overview for parents of what each session covered and I also set weekly homework. Experience has shown that private tuition works best with the support of your child's class teacher. Therefore I like to liaise with your child's teacher to see how I can support what is happening at school.

Personal Description:
I am an Oxford graduate and current law student who is passionate about helping students of all ages master their studies and gain the confidence to succeed.

My background is a bit untraditional (I've done two BAs- one in the US and one in the UK), but between my two undergraduate degrees, I have been lucky enough to get the depth and focus of a British BA as well as the flexibility of an American BA. As a result of my background, I have a strong understanding of many subjects and the ability to adapt my thinking and teaching to different disciplines from the creative to the analytical.

I have a 2.i from my BA in Philosophy and Theology from Oxford, a First from my BA in Humanities with Pre-Med courses (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Calculus) at Providence College in the United States, and an IB Diploma. I completed my Graduate Diploma in Law last year and am currently in my final year of legal studies at BPP University.

In my spare time, I like to work on crossword puzzles (I even competed in a tournament last year) and a few other somewhat nerdy indulgences like board games, video games and, of course, Star Wars. I always make time for learning something new where I can, and, having recently worked out the ukulele, I am currently working (slowly) on picking up Japanese.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience tutoring different ages of students in various disciplines, from helping undergraduates improve their essay-writing skills and preparing Oxbridge applicants for interview to assisting primary-school and SEN students with reading, writing and maths. I love helping students build confidence and master topics they once thought too challenging.

One of my favourite subjects to tutor is English and writing. During my first BA, I worked as a writing tutor at my university's tutoring centre, where I helped students analyse literature, brainstorm essay topics, construct thesis statements and outlines, and revise essay drafts for clarity and grammar. Over the past year, I've helped not only GCSE and A-level students but also primary-school SEN students improve their writing skills and confidence.

I am also very excited to tutor in Philosophy. Last year, I had the great pleasure of preparing one of my tutees for a Philosophy interview at Cambridge by discussing various topics and texts and working on essays together each week. We both enjoyed our sessions together greatly, and I was absolutely delighted when she was offered a place.

Finally, I have also worked as a teaching and lab assistant for my university's chemistry department and so am used to adapting my instruction for students with different aptitudes, interests and skillets. As a chemistry lab assistant, I worked alongside a lecturer to help university chemistry students in group hands-on chemistry lab lectures improve their lab techniques and see how each experiment fit in with the curriculum.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the best way to learn something challenging is to let students work through the problem at their own pace until they can see the solution for themselves and build the skills they'll need to succeed in the future on their own, so it's very important for me when I tutor to make sure that the student is in the driver's seat. I like to let the tutee's needs guide each session, so I begin each tutorial by asking the student what he or she wants to focus on and what he or she is struggling with. Whether it's reading through an essay or working through a maths problem, I like to help students break down a complicated problem and let them guide me through their thought processes, correcting and instructing where necessary and encouraging the student during their successes. Of course, there will always be complicated topics that require a more didactic style of tutoring, but I think the Socratic method is much more effective not only for ensuring students truly understand the material, but also for empowering them and giving them confidence in their work.

I believe an important goal for a tutor should be to help her tutee gain confidence, as many students only seek tutoring after having struggled to grasp a concept fully on their own and thus often tend to underestimate their ability in the subject. This is especially true for SEN students, who have often been misunderstood by their teachers and peers. A tutor shouldn't be just an instructor- she should be a coach and cheerleader, too! I honestly believe there is nothing more rewarding than watching my tutees grow in knowledge and confidence over the course of our sessions together.

I also believe that, where possible, it's important to add a dash of something interesting to tutorials, especially with younger students. I've found that when a tutee is losing interest or struggling to engage with the material (often because they're having trouble understanding it), finding new ways to approach the problem, either through games, real-life application or creative thought experiments, can help a student get reacquainted with a subject they might have dismissed as uninteresting.
