Personal Description:
I am 23 years old, originally from Oxford and currently living in Leeds. I first arrived here in 2005 to study a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering which I completed in 2009. I then spent 8 months training as a teacher in secondary schools teaching Maths to children from the age of 11-18, teaching in Pudsey and Harrogate. Whilst I loved the classroom experience, I did not take well to the school system and quit teaching in April. I have been tutoring on the side for the duration of my studies and training, and continue this especially because it allows me to still teaching without having to deal with the high pressure, high stress environment of state schooling.
I am also a big music fan and have been playing and teaching musical instruments for many years. I play the piano, guitar and harmonica, as well as doing some singing. Recently I play some festival dates in the US with my current Leeds-based band, Manning.
The bottom line is that I love to learn, and I love helping people to learn. I will happily sit down with people of all ages from young children to adults, and I pride myself on having the empathy and the patience to work constructively with people, to help them achieve their full potential!

Teaching Experience:

I first started tutoring when I was 17 and taught a total of 15 students on a weekly basis (as well as working a 50 hour a week job!). When I moved to Leeds the guitar tuition fell by the way side, but I did manage to do some Maths and Physics tutoring whilst studying.
Over the past year I undertook months of full-time teacher training in schools in Yorkshire teaching Maths to children of all ages and all abilities, including Special Needs students, including severe dyspraxia and dyslexia. Over these months I learnt to play my lessons thoroughly and scrutinise my own teaching methods and abilities. I learnt to use a variety of resources and pedagogies in my teaching and learnt a great deal about child learning and the psychology behind education.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is a meaningless activity if the student does not want to learn, but despite what many people believe to be true, many disaffected learners really do want to do well - they just also don't want to lose face. This is fundamental to my approach. The student has to be fully involved in the process and the design of the lesson, students need to, where possible, identify their own weaknesses. A sense of ownership in the learning process is vital for any sense of real achievement to flourish. To this end I try my best to work WITH the pupil and not FOR them. I try my best to allow them to see me more as a peer, someone to help, rather than a superior there to 'sort them out'. This involves mutual respect and it is this vein that I always maintain a relaxed composure and try to make use of the student in finding out the best way they will learn, as well as what it is they want to learn.

Personal Description:
I'm 19 years old and currently taking a year out from studying. I've done a bit of traveling and i'm now back home and trying to make money to fund the rest of my years at uni.
I do some freelance videographer and editing work and i'm hoping to work full time in the media industry when my studies are finished.
I'm an avid reader and enjoy a lively discussion.

Although I have no formal qualifications in IT, I have years of experience with both PC and Mac systems. I always excelled in IT at school and that was part of the reason i chose not to study it to any real qualification. I felt i had an advanced understanding already and opted to study things i was less familiar with so I could learn more.

I'm also dyslexic. However i've learned to overcome this and therefore have a good understanding of how to help others to do the same.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst in secondary school I was often the person classmates came to for help when they did not understand things. According to them I was able to explain the subjects in easier to understand terms than than the teachers usually did.
I have also tutored my younger brother in several subjects in the past.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm a very logical person, so I break things down into small, easy to understand parts and then help the student to create simple bullet point notes, flashcards or mind maps, depending on the preferred learning style.

Also repeated practice of weak areas.

Personal Description:
I read Engineering at Cambridge followed by a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College. I have experience in both private tuitions and university teaching. I am now working for an engineering firm in Oxfordshire.

Teaching Experience:

Previous tutoring experience in Maths and Physics at various levels (including tutoring within university). No formal qualifications. In possession of Enhanced Disclosure.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the private tuition should tackle individual needs and requirements of the tutee. Hence I am flexible in my approach depending on the tutee. I tend to use the first couple of lessons to gauge the tutee's level of interest. In general, I aim to strengthen the tutee's fundamental understanding so that he/she can adapt to different problems easily.

Personal Description:
I am a native Spanish speaker and I have a Bachelor's Degree and a Licenciatura (Licenciate Degree - roughly equivalent to a Master's Degree) in Spanish Philology. The main focus of my degrees was Spanish language, literature and linguistics. Courses I studied included Spanish Language, Spanish Grammar, Latin American Literature, Linguistics and Semiotics.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Spanish as a Foreign Language full time since 2001, both in my home country, Costa Rica, and in Egypt. I have taught adults and young learners ranging in levels from complete beginner (A1) to advanced (C2 according to the Council of Europe framework). I have also taught students preparing for the Diploma en Espaol como Lengua Extranjera Superior. I recently completed a course at the Instituto Cervantes in Cairo in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, which focussed on communicative language teaching and using a deductive approach. I am committed to communicative language teaching and encourage students at all levels to actively use the language they are learning through communicative activities and conversation practice. I have taught both general Spanish classes (focussing on language skills and systems) and conversation classes (focussing on communication and vocabulary development). At the Costa Rican Language Academy, I was involved in developing conversation classes for students.

I have taught undergraduates and students at tertiary level since 2000. I have taught a range of courses related to language, literature, linguistics and critical theory, including Morphology, Phonetics and Phonology, Grammar, Spanish Literature and Latin American Literature. Many of the courses I gave were compulsory courses leading to a Bachelor's degree in teaching Spanish in secondary schools in Costa Rica.

Tutoring Approach:

Most of the classes I have given have been face-to-face classes. However, I also have experience of teaching online and at a distance. I have recently completed a course with the Instituto Cervantes in teaching online and at a distance. In my current job, I regularly use informatin and communication technology to faciliate learning, by using an online virtual learning environment with my students. In this 'virtual classroom', students use online, audio-visual materials as learning tools, which helps develop their learner autonomy.

I have worked with students from diverse educational, cultural and work backgrounds. In my role as a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language, I have worked with students from many different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, which taught me good oral and written communication skills. In my work with undergraduates in Costa Rica, I worked with students from a wide range of educational and work backgrounds. Some of my students came from disadvantaged backgrounds and had little experience of studying literature or literary theory. Often, my students did not have a lot of experience of university level education, so they did not know how to write essays or have good study skills. I helped them to develop their study skills and essay writing, for example, showing them how to organise an essay, how to write a bibliography, how to do research and background reading into the subjects. I have also taught courses in Writing, focusing on academic writing. These courses have also enabled me to develop good written communication skills. Through this work, I have been committed to equal opportunities practices, ensuring that education is available to all.

When I worked in Costa Rica, I regularly travelled to the tutorial centres of the universities where I worked to give tutorials, and was available and accessible to students.
