Personal Description:
I'm a 46-year old graduate of the excellent University of Sussex languages course with a First Class Honours degree in French and Russian. I lived for four years in Paris where I mastered the language and the accent!

As well as language studies, my course encompassed literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries and history, society and politics since the French Revolution - subjects I am therefore qualified to talk about with some authority.

I like to stay abreast of French culture and society and am catching up with some novels I didn't get to read at university (most recently Georges Perec's wonderful <i>La Vie, mode d'emploi</i>)

Teaching Experience:

I have now been privately tutoring students at all levels for 6 years covering most UK exam boards at GCSE KS3 and KS4, AS and A2-level, and I have also helped prepare older students for the DELF.

Recent successes include steering a young lady through her DELF B1 exam with a 92.5% mark and an 11-year old girl passing her selective school entrance exam.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above their 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.

Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.

Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.

For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

Before drama school I worked as a Primary School teaching assistant and drama teacher for two years, after graduating from King's College London with a 2:1 in my BA (Hons) English Literature & Language degree. I went straight to university from Norwich High School for Girls in Norfolk. So I have travelled all the way across England in my pursuit of study! During the morning session, I am currently working in a Year One class in this south London school and thriving on aiding the children specifically with their literacy, reading and speaking skills as well as exploring numeracy work.
I lead certain lessons including story time and circle time.
I support key groups of children within the class and am able to use my initiative to plan, deliver and assess their learning in order to encourage progression.
I have vast experience in creating my own resources using ICT, and creating artistic displays to proudly exhibit the children's work.
I have taken courses in Early Literacy Support, encouraging creative and inclusive teaching especially for children with English as an additional language and complex special needs children. I also have training in "Letters and Sounds" Phonics, and "A First Workshop on Autism".
During the afternoon session, I support a child in Year Two with Autism. I plan and prepare all his lessons, working towards targets which I and the class teacher have set for him; these include phonics, counting and social skills. I use music as a reward system for the boy, and his singing has greatly improved his speech quality and communication skills.
I have extensive training in Autistic Spectrum Conditions, undertaken with Southwark, covering various aspects including history, sensory integration and behavioural management.
I work with various children with complex special needs within school, including children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Galactosemia, and have worked closely with speech and language therapists and learning mentors.
I offer one to one support outside of lesson time in the form of music lessons for special needs children; I prepare and provide my own resources and find singing with my students extremely rewarding.
I am in the process of setting up an after-school drama club for Key Stage One students at the school, having directed the infant school Christmas play this and last year.
I have also spent time in Key Stage Two classrooms, focussing on aiding older children with their literacy skills: I particularly enjoyed aiding Year Six students in exploring literary themes and using appropriate critical vocabulary when studying children's literature.

Whilst I was at Moat at during my education at Beauchamp College and Loughborough College I helped to assist/ train a small group in the use of particular pieces of hardware and software At Loughborugh College. I also assisted in several HP IT Essentials classes where I assisted students to gain particular qualifications. Whilst at Moat I assisted staff in the training and understanding of new software to ensure all staff have the confidence to deliver the curriculum and to provide support to staff appropriate to their needs. I would be able to provide support, assistance, training help and guidance to staff/students using computers, new and existing software and technologies

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching/tutoring is a simple one I always strive to make sure the learner understands whats he/she is being taught and if there are aspects that they find difficult I revise that particular topic over and over again until they understand and I do this using the various teaching methods and learning styles available to ne including the VAK (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic) approach.

Once they have an understanding of the topic I don't move on until they feel comfortable and I always reasure them throughout.

I feel its important to motivate students and help increase their confidence. I specialise in preparing for the 11+ Medway and Kent test and am able to provide tutoring for Maths, Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning for the 11+ . I have a a high success rate and am happy to provide references on request. My approach is relaxed (but with a focus on exam technique) and I believe that learning should be an enjoyable experience.

I am conscientious and will discuss all matters with the parents/adult student at home in an informal chat before commencing any teaching sessions. I have a current CRB and I always have a file with this and my qualifications for you to inspect prior to beginning teaching with you. I have a number of private pupils in Stockton, Billingham, Redcar and Middlesbrough, whose parents are more than happy to provide a reference if required.

In 2006 I was one of ten finalists in a national teaching award - QIA STAR Awards.

I have an office in the Elmwood Centre but I also travel around the Cleveland area on some days of the week. This can be by arrangement.

Teaching Experience:

I have 24 years teaching experience, with the last fifteen years teaching English, literacy and creative writing; also, six of the last fifteen years teaching numeracy/maths and ESOL. I have experience in teaching both children and adults, and teaching English to people who are learning English as a second language.

My experience is both classroom based and one-to-one teaching. In addition to being qualified in English, Creative Writing, Maths and ESOL, I am also qualified in supporting learners with dyslexia.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to make learning fun, as I believe this will develop a love of learning which will last into adulthood. I use multi-sensory resources, as well as a computer, to enable students to grasp the necessary basic rules of literacy and numeracy. For younger children I will often make, or bring a game that will have a serious learning point to it, although the children do not always realise this.

I am patient and allow all learners to develop their understanding and confidence in literacy and numeracy by giving them time for questions, explanation and discussion. I also believe that giving praise to someone for trying to answer, even if the answer is incorrect, is really important - the fact they have tried means they are willing to learn - this is the one key requirement to building knowledge and confidence in any subject.

Personal Description:
Hello!

I have been told that I am an inspirational and motivating teacher. I love people and am passionate about my work which I manage to incorporate into an exciting yet balanced life. When not teaching I spend my time painting, singing, swimming, reading and travelling. My fourteen year old son, Charlie, attends our nearest Steiner school in Garlinge Green where he is very happy, I am delighted to say!

Teaching Experience:

I have been to Art College and also studied the four year BA in education at Christchurch in Canterbury, qualifying in 1994. I am therefore a qualified primary school teacher. I taught in several different primary schools before taking on a position as a drama teacher in a local secondary school. ( I have always been excited about all subjects and thus very happy to teach anything and everything!)

I was Head of Art at a local prep school for seven years, a super job, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have spent a few years teaching children with special needs which also gave me tremendous satisfaction, especially with regards to the social development of the children.

I am now working as a supply teacher as the flexibility suits my lifestyle perfectly.

Tutoring Approach:

Working with a person on a one to one basis is a luxury that has so many advantages. Unless, it has to be said, you are learning hockey skills, or something similar! Time is valuable and expensive, so, although relaxed, I am keenly aware that there is a lot of work that can be accomplished in one hour... the sense of satisfaction gained from work done, progression and obvious good results lead to a huge surge in confidence. It is my belief that it doesn't matter what area/field this is, only that it takes place, again, age is irrelevant too, five or fifty five, success is success and it makes us happy!

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Personal Description:
I'm a recent maths graduate from Cambridge, with a real passion for conveying concepts in unique ways. I first starting tutoring when I was in school, and quickly learnt how challenging, yet satisfying it could be, to break ideas down into their most simplest forms. I'm tutoring over the next few months for all school level maths (up to A-level maths and further maths, and even STEP maths) and look forward to working with you!

Teaching Experience:

I've tutored many students both GCSE and A-level Maths (Modules C1-4, FP1-3, M1-3 and S1-2) over the last few years, and really enjoy it! Most of these students went on to achieve A* grades, but I taylor each lesson to suit each individual student.

Tutoring Approach:

It's impossible to explain my approach to tutoring here as it varies hugely for each student - if for example the student is familiar with the topic but wants extra practice, I start with a few questions to ascertain his/her level, and then cement it with further teaching, trying to explain any unfamiliar concepts in several different ways. If a topic is new however, I will try to build it up from previously-seen ideas, to give a motivated approach to the subject and it's uses. My first lesson is always half price, so that you can see whether you like my tutoring style in 1 lesson before continuing.
