TWO EXAM PAPER NOTICES

A couple of examination paper notices.

1. I am now OCR trained for the new AS level source/essay paper. Obviously this has given me a clear insight into how it's marked and how students need to approach it to be successful.
2. Secondly, the ED Excel Y13 A2 sources & essay paper (three secondary sources): I worked with four students on this last year and achieved spectacular results (these pupils can be contacted; some won't be able to put referees up here because I found all 4 of them via word of mouth and the UK's other major tutoring site). I'm very happy to report that I worked hard and thought hard on refining my advice on the paper and it has clearly paid off handsomely. Do contact me for details; I can pass these on to you prior to your making a decision on whether to engage me (or not as the case may be). Naturally anyone re-taking the A2 paper in 2017 can benefit from this. The new EdExcel History exam has a similar paper so this year's cohort of Y13 students should be able to benefit too.

Note. Because I'm away for the next 3 weeks carrying out research in London and Reading for my PhD I will not be able to begin lessons this year until the last week of September.

And now, The Pitch!

So, my name is Craig, a very dedicated one-to-one tutor of History, Politics and English. I offer an exceptionally high level of expertise as a history, politics (and English) teacher, teacher of essay writing, exam writing and exam taking. This is based on well over two decades of experience in schools and in homes. Though I have been teaching a long time, I am continually striving to improve the quality of my work, constantly analyzing the effect of my advice on performance and trying to perfect the art and craft of the job.

When not tutoring, most of my time is spent working (hard!) as a student too! I am just about to begin the third year of my PhD, supervised by Professor Tony Collins of De Montfort University, Leicester, undertaking research in 20th century British history. (Rugby fans might like to note at this point that Tony is the number one rugby historian - of all codes - in the world. All his books are very well worth reading.)


I am exceptionally well qualified. I have an MA (2011) in History and am now two years into my doctoral studies. I have written fiction and non-fiction. I have had experience in being an A level marker with an exam board. I have had long experience in teaching and preparing whole History & Govnt. & Politics year groups for A level, producing outstanding results.

I take on all types of students. Some need a lot of training, some need to be dragged away from a collision-course with failure, some need finessing, some need waking up, some need inspiring, some need a boost in confidence; some need more intellectual stimulation; all can and do improve their writing.

My chief strengths are: 1. I know how to teach students to write. 2. I know how to prepare them for exams. 3. My methods are clear, simple and work beautifully. 4. I care very much about the progression of my students. 5. I treat my work with them with the utmost seriousness. 6. But I'm a human being with a sense of humour! 7. I am very, very experienced. 8. As a parent of three children who have gone through the school and university experience, I understand what both the student and the parent is going through.

I am very happy to work with students online. I have found it to work extremely well.

More on my current research project...
I am currently working on doctoral research into the BBC, sport and social class, 1922-64, with Tony Collins at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is the director of DMU's International Centre for Sports History & Culture, a department of world renown, and the leading British powerhouse of sports history. I am very proud to be working with Tony and within the department. Undergrad students should note that I am working under one of the world's best historians, a 3-time winner of the prestigious Aberdare Prize for Sports Books.

Becoming a student again, beginning with the masters degree course at De Montfort University in 2010 has really helped my teaching. As well as keeping on top of developments in academic history. I am much better read! I know more! It has also taken me right back in touch with what it feels like to be a student and all that follows from that. It has also enabled me to extend my tutoring potential to undergraduates and masters students.

I'm happily married with 3 children fully grown (it's only their father who's lagging behind).

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 24 years in secondary schools in Bromley, Kent and Derbyshire where I now live. History was my specialism but I was head of Politics for a number of years in the last part of my school career. I also taught Geography, Economics, English and R.E.

Since beginning to tutor students, I have taught history, Government & Politics and English (including basic literacy skills to a young person with dyslexia). Courses taught have mostly been those at GCSE and A level.

I have taught a wide range of topics within French, German, Russian and British history. The list includes the usual suspects: causes of World Wars 1 and 2, Hitler and the Third Reich, the French Revolution (and its causes) and Napoleon; also Tsarist Russia, the Russian revolution and Stalin as well as the European Reformation, France in the 16th century, Louis XIV and aspects of Irish and Chinese history and 19th century France, plus 20th century USA. politics (Boom and Bust, New Deal and Post-War Boom, and also the Witchcraft Persecution in Europe (1550-1680).

In terms of British history I am very much up to speed with all aspects of its 20th century political history (high politics, parties, electoral history, social history & economic history, right through to the 21st century, in fact); I have also taught most aspects of 19th history, social, economic and political. For the last decade and a half of my school-teaching career I taught the A level course in 16th and 17th century - The Tudors, James I, Charles I, Causes of the English Civil War, Charles II, James II & the Glorious Revolution, the reigns of William & Mary & Queen Anne.

I have recently added 19th century British politics (Reform Bill through Peel, Palmerston, Disraeli and Gladstone to Salisbury) and Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe to my "roster" of topics.

Since becoming a PhD student my expertise level in terms of content knowledge has leaped forward in 20th century British history. However...

...it isn't the historical content of the course that matters so much: technique is the key; know-how; how to write; how to take an exam; how to prepare for the whole exam period; how to approach the whole thing mentally, psychologically; how to be the best you can be; how to be successful - end of story!

I have worked with students on exam preparation and revision, coursework planning and execution and essay writing techniques. It is here that the battle to improve and to reach a fulfillment of potential, often with the reward of high grades, is usually won.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't tinker around the margins of issues. I give students something all those who come for help require: a method to use to dispose of the problems posed by the issue of writing that dreaded thing: the essay! Not a tinkering round the edges of the thing, a tip here, a bit of advice there, but a comprehensive yet simple and absolutely clear set of actions and principles through which the student can fulfill their potential: show the examiner what they know and understand of the topic.

Following on from the above, my approach to tutoring begins and ends with the drive to be successful. If I did not unfailingly improve students, help them to achieve the grades they want and need I would not be writing this.

In between comes what we might describe as philosophy and methods. It's hard to write about methods without immediately mentioning what I suppose might be my strongest "offer" (I don't much like that word but there, I've used it). As a schoolteacher I developed a unique but simple method of essay planning and writing that achieved stunning results. So successful has it been over 20 years that I am astonished that no one else seems to have found it. But in my experience up to February 2013 no teacher has. Essay writing is still something that many, many students find difficult and confusing. It really does not need to be this way.

Obviously content issues are hugely important and here I rely on my communication skills which have yet to let me down! These, naturally, go hand in hand with a knowledge of British and European history across a variety of years which has grown over recent years particularly through my MA studies, my PhD research and through working with students on a range of historical periods, topics and people. I find myself to be adaptable to different types of students. I am able to adapt my language and my technique to fit the situation. I am also somewhat stubborn in that I never give up on solving a problem. If we have to go over time, so be it!

Finally, some more of my personal philosophies of teaching. I believe that students generally do not achieve their potential. With each student I aim to take them to standards (and grades) that they did not think were possible. Without exception I push, push and push until we run out of time as we inevitably do. I also do not believe in lost causes. Much can be achieved in a very short space of time. I have seen this happen over and over again.

There is much more to be said but that, I hope, will do for now.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my Ph.D, which was about the philosophy of folly in Shakespeare's plays.

Whereas English Literature, Language and Philosophy are my primary disciplines, I have also taught German and History up to A-Level standard. I graduated with a First Class degree in English Literature and received a high distinction for my Master's degree, which were both from London University. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, which means that I am qualified to teach at university-level.

My ultimate objective is to teach and research at university level. I am a keen individual, who values the arts and humanities. I believe education is not simply a means to an end; rather, it offers exciting and new ways of thinking about ourselves and the world around us.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is fairly extensive and I have taught both in this country and abroad.

For the last two years, I have lectured and led seminars at Royal Holloway, University of London; I have also continued to teach A-Level and GCSE students English, Philosophy and History as I have done since 2009.

In 2010, I designed and taught a course for American university students, which was called "British Culture". This course was, in essence, an history of ideas in this country from the Roman invasion to the present.

My work has been published in major academic journals and my thesis is currently under consideration by publishers. At the other end of the spectrum, as an undergraduate, I worked as a teaching assistant in primary and secondary schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I realise that at Key Stages 1,2, and 3 the emphasis needs to be on passing exams. At this level, I aim to provide an entertaining and relaxed session, which remains focused on providing and reinforcing the information required to pass an exam.

I hesitate, however, to say that my style is informal. I believe that when instructing younger children a certain amount of structure is required. This does not mean that the session needs be short-sighted; rather that we focus on a structured approach to attaining goals in an interesting and fulfilling way. At the higher levels and for mature students my approach is more relaxed.

I first started tutoring some of my fellow students in Elementary Logic during my second year at University and greatly enjoyed helping people improve their understanding of the subject and gain higher marks. Once my degree was completed I began tutoring A-Level students in Religious Studies and Philosophy in the Leeds area before moving to East Sussex.

The potential of tutoring can only be maximised if each student feels comfortable in lessons, so I actively try to cultivate a good working relationship with each student. After all, if I were not enthusiastic and passionate about the subject it would be impossible to motivate any students to be enthusiastic about it! So far all my students have improved their performance by at least by two grade boundaries following tuition with me.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with students with a broad range of abilities, from those that need some extra help to reach their full potential, to those that aren't in mainstream schooling and as such don't have any previous knowledge of the subject. Some students are very visual in their learning, others are very shy and need a lot of encouragement to speak, and there are others who are extremely capable if you ask them the right questions. Using a range of resources I can tailor a programme of study to suit each student.

During my time tutoring I have noticed how easily students can lose confidence in their abilities, which at times can be a barrier in their learning. By encouraging students to ask questions, looking at what they are doing right and breaking down topics into their simplest formulation, I help the individual gain confidence in the subject and the skills to answer questions fully.3

Tutoring Approach:

My role as tutor is not only to help the student understand the concepts involved but also to gain the confidence to discuss those concepts in an analytical manner. Religious Studies and Philosophy are disciplines that greatly benefit from one-on-one tuition due to the complexity of the issues. In large lesson groups individuals can easily become confused and aren't always able to receive the instant feedback needed to further explore the subject matter.

As a tutor not only do I expand students' knowledge base but also engage students in a positive way with the subject. If students have been finding a subject difficult their enjoyment of learning can become affected and they can lose the motivation needed to gain a broader understanding. By showing enthusiasm for my subject and using relevant examples and discussion points I reintegrate fun back into learning about the subject.

Hello! My name is Giacomo, I come from Italy and I am a third year PhD student in Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester.I have a strong experience in tutoring and teaching at high school and university level and I'm happy to help with Latin, Ancient Greek and Italian.

Teaching Experience:

During the last two years I have been teaching different courses at the University of Leicester, acquiring a strong experience in dealing with students. In particular during this and last year I have been teaching Latin and Ancient Greek to first year students. In the last two months I also have been teaching Latin to the children of the Overdale Infant and Jr. School, as part of the Outreach Program of the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. Furthermore, since last year I have been working as one to one study mentor in The AccessAbility Centre of the University where I support students with learning disabilities. Finally, when I was still in Italy I have been giving private lessons of Latin, Ancient Greek and Italian literature to high school and university students for three years.

Tutoring Approach:

I will have a different approach according to the language I will be teaching. For Italian, I will use a communicative approach. This means that I will deliver just a minimum of grammar and I will use the target language as much as possible so that the student will learn the grammar implicitly. On the other side, since Latin and Ancient Greek are extinct languages I will use a more traditional approach. Nevertheless, also in this case I will try to alternate grammar with literature in order to help the student to get a broader perception of the ancient world.

Personal Description:
My name is Andrea, I'm Italian and I'm 30 years old. I have got a degree in Italian Language, Italian Literature and Modern Philology at Padua University with the maximum valuation, 110 cum laude.
Recently I got a certification which legally qualifies me to teach Italian language, abroad, to foreign students. It is named CEDILS, and I got it at Ca' Foscari University in Venice.
I have learnt to use new linguistic teaching methodology with a focus on the student and his cognitive process, to value the autonomy and independence during the learning and the aim to help student to understand how to learn. I have improved my competence in management and in building teaching unit structure and I have learnt a lot of new and encourage teaching techniques.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working in teaching sector during the last three years: I have worked in different schools of language, both as employee and as volunteer, and I have a good experience with face to face and small groups lessons. I have taught Italian language both to adult with an high level who wanted to improve their fluency and their linguistic skills, and to youth students for the first time in contact with the Italian language.
I love very much to teach and to work in relationship with students; I like to motivate them in the process of learning using the right methodology to stimulate each of them in their educational path.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching method is mainly based on a communicative approach which gives the student a central and active role. The study of italian language procees from the general to the particular learning of all the characteristics of the new Language. Communication moments are privileged, and I always plan my lessons for the different needs of my students. I select and develop the teaching materials which are presented and discussed together with the students in order to give them a real motivation into the learning process.

Tutoring Approach:

I usually first conduct an assessment session to understand the gap. Once the current status is known, lessons are build to bridge the gap. Keeping the student motivated is the key. My sessions are very interactive and actually students do the work on board which builds their confidence.

Regular tests, home work are part and parcel of the coaching.

I have prepared revision notes which students have found to be very valuable. It has executive summary for each chapter which helps revise quickly during the exams.
