Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
My name is Lisa, I have a passion for the Martial Arts and love nothing more than teaching others. I have trained in Karate and Kickboxing prior to Taekwondo which has been my life for the past 18 years. I hope to be able to pass on my experience and knowledge to others. I have a venue available in Keighley and Bingley for private tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

4th Dan Black Belt in the Martial Art of Taekwondo with over 15 years experience of teaching. I hold the 3rd Class Foreign Instructors qualification from completing my training at the World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to be able to help others and pass on my knowledge and experience. I will teach you basic techniques to keep you safe & which work. Be aware that some instructors may show you fancy techniques but these aren't realistic in a dangerous situation, the key is to make you feel more confident, more aware and feel able to deal with a situation effectively should one arise. The basic techniques are the ones you can learn and master and which will hopefully keep you safe. It's not about strength but about technique and being knowledgeable in a situation.

Personal Description:
Hi my name is Debra and I live in Shepperton I graduated with an MFA in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art and have a degree in painting and, diploma in art and design.

I specialise in portraiture and figurative art and, in particular iPad/iPhone and digital painting. I graduated in painting and have experience with oils, acrylics, watercolour alongside other mediums such as charcoals and pencil. Much of my work is done through direct observation and I stress to students, the importance of this. Observational work strengthens the eyes, memory and confidence in what we are looking at, enabling us to better record our observation. Therefore, plenty of practice here will ultimately reap rewards.
I am passionate about what I do and regard drawing and painting as a form of self expression.

Teaching Experience:

I have eighteen years experience within the Early Years sector.

Six months experience as a teaching assistant at a local secondary school in the Art Department.

Private tutoring

Tutoring Approach:

I am an extremely motivated and positive person and believe that anyone can be taught to draw. Healthy doses of discussions, listening and the exchanging of ideas is a key component in cultivating the creative mind, alongside plenty of encouragement and positivity. Constructive criticism is also very important and this part of exchange should be delivered with positivity to maximise a productive way forward for the tutee.

Personal Description:
As a practical enthusiastic, determined and, very academic individual I keep abreast with contemporary events. I read on daily basis, it is a habit and an addiction as well as, subscribing to several Science journals (Royal society of chemistry and Biomedical science journals) and magazines, keeping up to date with current developments in the scientific world. I am very open minded friendly and easy to talk to.

I have assisted friends and families with all sort of coursework from international business management, Human Resources, health and social care, early years foundation child care courses, Health and social care, nursing and GeneralSciences. One thing about academic exercises is that knowledge is transferable. The skills acquired in one area can be transferred to another subject. What is required is, understanding the concepts, have the structure laid out, have the right evidences to back up one's assertion, provide appropriate examples to support literature and make your literature flow in a coherent and consistent manner using suitable connectives.

There is a first time for everything, try a tutor out and don't get too paranoid until you test one. It is always natural to have hesitations until you become comfortable with someone new.

Teaching Experience:

My experience in working in 6 different schools has enriched my perspective towards education. I have witnessed very good teachers and terrible one's with poor teaching skills. I have worked as a science technician and teaching assistant directly involved teaching lessons when teachers are absent. I am familiar with all the various school academic curriculum for AQABA, OCR, EDEXCEL etc. I am abreast with the latest curriculum and work closely with teachers providing them with latest science experiment and practical in order to enrich the understanding of students.

My laboratory background gives me the advantage to connect abstract academic theories to reality. Few teachers actually have practical experience and rarely integrate practical in their lessons. I have worked as a laboratory technician and tutor in Biology and Chemistry laboratory in several colleges. During my periods as laboratory technician I do engage one to one with students to sharpen their understanding of the subject matter.

In addition to that, I have worked in 2 different NHS TRUST my current involves analysing biological specimens, investigating diseases and up to date with current developments in Science.

Students struggling with their dissertation and course works always benefit tremendously from my assistance. I also teach classes when lecturers are absent. I am an experienced home to home private tutor, and teach have taught primary, secondary to university students. I have tutored numerous students from various backgrounds across the length an breadth of London. I am adaptable and fits quickly in any given environment and a people's person. I have no problem travelling distances within London. Currently, I am writing a book for practical and experimental science for teachers, tutors and students.

I understand that every student is unique and vary from their method of learning, absorbing and understanding teaching materials. The different types of learners range from kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. During my tutoring session I implement all three method of tutoring and then instinctively monitor and gauge student learning approach. I adjust and adapt to student tutoring needs, then reinforce the style that is most suitable.

I am currently working with the NHS as scientist taking patient's blood samples etc.

Tutoring Approach:

Due to my background as a laboratory technician, my approach is both practical, kinaesthetic, auditory, visual and theoretical. I will ensure my student understand the subject topic in depth by creating scenario's, diagrams, examples that matches the theoretical concept being discussed. I will keep prompting the student and using different learning approaches to engage the student to enhance assimilation of the learning material. As an experienced private tutor I have in possession numerous scientific diagrams, lecture notes, and power point presentation which I use in my tutoring. During and after tutoring students receive materials which continues to assist them in their studies. I use laptops, tablets, videos and diagrams to enhance and maximize teaching experience.

I have also worked with Local Government Chemist (LGC) the biggest private scientific firm in Europe with several outlets in the world. I have experienced hands on and progressive scientific developments and several analytically scientific progress. These include detection of cocaine, heroin and other drugs in body fluids such as urine, saliva and blood samples.

I demonstrate Scientific experiment and practical alongside teachers. My style of teaching is relating theory to practice. The advantage of this style of teaching is it unifies theory to practice, and hence, consolidating and building scientific confidence.

Personal Description:
As a professional writer with a range of credits in tv and radio (Eastenders, Holby City, The Bill), I gained experience of working with schools and colleges to develop the literacy skills of learners of all ages. Perhaps uniquely, I am also a fully-qualified Maths teacher equipped with the subject knowledge to teach to A-level. Aside from Maths and English, I occasionally teach guitar and ukelele and play in a couple of local bands. Though there is no escaping hard work, I think learning should be fun. As both a parent and a teacher, I believe you get the best out people (young people included!) if you listen, and try to see the world from their point of view.

Teaching Experience:

I have recent experience of teaching in both state and independent schools, but appreciate not everyone thrives in these environments.

Tutoring Approach:

Without personalised support from a sympathetic expert who can focus on and understand their needs, many young learners find themselves lost or feeling they are not reaching their full potential. As a tutor, I aim to give that support, in a relaxed and fun environment. I aim to identify and overcome any fears that may be blocking progress. Starting from individual interests, enthusiasms and motivations, whilst building on existing skills of which they may not be aware, I aim to develop the confidence and feelings of success that ultimately lead to achievement.

Personal Description:
I work freelance in tutoring, teaching and proof-reading and am currently working in local secondary schools as a cover supervisor. I have interests in a range of areas,, including drama and art. I plan to combine teaching and tutoring with work as an illustrator in the near future.
I have also performed spoken-word poetry in Manchester and headlined a couple of nights.
I am quite successful at pub quizzes due to having a large and random range of interests, including history, science and culture and luckily having the sort of memory that recalls useful facts.
I believe that work should be integrated into the rest of life and that learning never ends.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to meet a huge variety of people and to encourage them to develop confidence and life skills. I also like a job invovling communication and rapid results.

Teaching Experience:

I have five years teaching A-Level and GCSE English, as well as tutoring and teaching Latin. Also experience of teaching English to students from around the world, both here and in Europe. I have worked particularly with students aged 14-19 and with students retaking GCSE English with some reluctance.

For the past four summer I have taught university entrance and study-skills at Southampton University, helping students to improve their essay-writing and critical reading as well as helping refine their English grammar performance.

I have seen many different GCSE English assessment methods and boards and have been able to teach the fundamental similiarities of cirtical reading and directed writing that underlie all these varieties. I am also confident in being able to explain English grammar to current assessment standards.

I can also teach more detailed and challenging reading and writing strategies through helping students prepare for university courses and study A-Levels and Access Level 3. I am particularly interested in English literature and poetry.

I have also taught Latin, Film Studies, Politics and GCSE Maths. I designed and ran a Latin evening course for a few terms.

Tutoring Approach:

I think Students need to enjoy the subject in order to understand it fully and to be able to work flexibly in exams and coursework, When they approach questions from a position of confidence and relaxation, they can answer them more effectively.

A tutor works best when providing an alternative to school-based education and a good tutor will enable their student to explore around a topic and to discuss any particular issues and concerns.

I have found that lack of confidence is one of the main barriers to success and that this can often be overcome with the right exercises and personal attention. Another issue that often comes up is confusion about the exact requirements of an exam or assessment. This is an area that can benefit greatly from tutoring support. It is much easier to study once the expectations and structures of a course are made clear.

Personal Description:
I am a native Greek speaker, having been born and raised in Greece. I had an inclination and passion towards foreign languages from a young age, which resulted into my learning English and French as a primary and secondary school student and Japanese and a little Korean as a high school and university student. I have a BA in English Language and Literature from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece and I am currently studying for my MSc in Comparative Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I also hold several foreign language certificates.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously worked as a tutor of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), teaching mostly primary and secondary school children as well as preparing adults for English language exams and certificates. I have also taught Greek to foreigners and elementary Japanese.

Tutoring Approach:

I always tailor my lessons according to my students' needs, strengths and weaknesses. I like using textbooks as a base for my teaching but multimedia and extra material is an integral part of my lessons, since they not only enhance the learning experience but they also keep the learners' interest intact and help them attain some original contact with their target language.
