Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Jodie. I am a 30 year old female currently studying a PhD in Education Policy at The University of Nottingham. I am friendly, enthusiastic, organised and I have several years of experience tutoring students with a range of abilities, both at home and in a school environment.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require any further information.

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach on undergraduate courses in The School of Sociology at The University of Nottingham. This year I taught on the MA Philosophy of Research module and the BA Social Policy and Social Justice module.

Over the past eight years I have privately tutored numerous children and adults in English Literature, English Language, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

For five years I have mentored students applying to Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities as part of the Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme run by Insight Education. This involved supporting students throughout the entire admissions process, including writing their personal statement, interview preparation, support with developing their analytical skills and preparation for entrance examinations.

For two years I worked as an academic tutor in an inner city comprehensive school in London. Here I tutored sixth form students in English Language, English Literature, Social Sciences, and Media Studies. A large component of this role was supporting students with essay writing skills and study skills and I am happy to support students with these skills in a general way, or in relation to a specific subject. In this role I also coordinated and ran summer school transition programmes for students moving into year seven, and tutored mathematics and English to year seven students. I am therefore comfortable teaching and supporting students from a range of different year groups.

I have tutored GCSE English to students who have been excluded from mainstream school, and students who are struggling to pass GCSE qualifications. Several of my roles have contained a motivational and mentoring aspect, and I have lots of experience of getting students organised in their approach to study.

Summary of Academic Qualifications:

A levels in English Language, English Literature and Sociology all at grade A
BA English Language and Literature (2:1) from The University of Oxford
MSC Social Policy with Distinction from The London School of Economics and Political Science
MA in Research Methods (Social Policy) with Distinction from The University of Nottingham
I am currently undertaking a funded PhD in Education Policy at The University of Nottingham

As I have degrees and post graduate qualifications in English Language, English Literature and Social Science subjects and I am happy to teach these up to degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much dependant on the student. I believe that different people are suited to different learning styles and therefore I always take the first couple of sessions to assess how a student likes to work and what their difficulties might be.

I like to set 'homework' tasks - even if they are very short - to encourage the student to develop the skills they are learning in their own time. I am happy to mark additional work and essays and to e-mail students with any advice or feedback that they may require whilst working on a particular assignment.

Tutoring Approach:

My training revolves around clarification, scepticism and individuality. All training is time managed to ensure the student gets the most out of their lessons. We begin with a clear set objective and make sure the student has in mind the goal of every exercise undertaken. Rather than teach a list of techniques, I actively engage all students to get the most out of their individual strengths and I encourage them to look critically at what will work best for them. I promote a self-coaching concept for more efficient skill retention.

Personal Description:
I am a very experienced and successful tutor of English and Maths. I did an English degree at Cambridge, a PGCE at Nottingham, and then worked as an English and Drama teacher for 10 years, latterly as Head of Department. I have worked in educational and children's television since then, as a producer, director and writer. I have made over 500 programmes for broadcast on the BBC, Channel 4, and around the world, winning numerous educational awards in the UK and internationally. I am married with two children.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in and near London, for four years in a grammar school and for six years in two different comprehensives, teaching English Language and Literature, and Drama.
My teaching experience more recently has been through creating television scripts, CD-ROMs and websites, especially helping young people to enjoy and learn maths. Supporting my daughter through her GCSEs and A levels has kept me very much in touch with students' needs, and working with my son has given me great insight into children with special needs.
I am currently tutoring twenty two students, ranging in age from seven to seventeen.

Tutoring Approach:

I help children, young people and adults learn through motivating them and building their confidence. I aim to make learning thorough, clear, enjoyable and inspirational; to make obscure things interesting, complex things simple, and dull things entertaining. Learning should be purposeful and fun.

Reviews:
I contacted Chris because my son was struggling with his Maths and he was taking his GCSE in June. He needed someone to spend time with him to understand what his challenges were and to then explain and coach in a way he understood. Chris delivered this and more. He not only gave my son the technical knowledge on the areas he found difficult he showed him he was capable and built his confidence no end. He even went through how to approach the exam which proved invaluable on the day!
Chris came to our rescue at very short notice and really did put himself out and made sure my son had as much time as he could with him before his GCSE which showed Chris really cares about his students and that was very important to me.
I can't recommend Chris highly enough, he obviously knows his subjects and understands how to engage with students so they understand and learn which means they go into the exam in a position where they can do their absolute best. And as a parent that's all we can ask!
TB, Horsham: GCSE Maths

Chris is brilliant. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for extra tuition.
TS, Brockham: GCSE English Language, English Literature and Maths

Thank you so much for tutoring my son in KS3 English this year. You have given him much more confidence and his results have greatly improved. Best of all, he has really enjoyed coming to the sessions, so the improvement hasn't been gained at the cost of losing his love of reading and writing.
AR, Abinger: KS3 English Language and Literature

Very approachable and flexible on times. Professional approach and followed up each visit with an email on work covered/areas to study.
AB, Surrey: English Language and Literature

Thank you so much for helping our son. His teachers predicted B's at GCSE so you can imagine his surprise and delight when he got A*s in both GCSE English papers - not to mention the confidence boost. I know this was only achieved because of your teaching skills, patience, understanding & getting to know exactly how he ticked and what worked for him.
KW, Reigate: GCSE English and English Language and Literature

Really nice person, my girls think he's cool and are enjoying learning time with him
PB, Surrey: KS2 and KS3 English and Mathematics

I thoroughly enjoyed every lesson that I had with Chris and my only regret is that I had to finish due to other commitments. Having lessons with Chris not only extinguished anxieties I had around reading and writing but also reignited my passion for English Literature. He takes great interest in his students teaching with a non-judgemental approach, with bags of creativity, energy and passion for his subjects. I felt valued, understood and constantly encouraged and praised.
JC, Capel: Adult Learner, English Language and Literature

Chris's tutoring allowed me to gain confidence and realization in myself. Using understandable and valuable techniques in essay planning and writing which I used to pass my A Levels and continue to use at University!
AW, Surrey: A level English Literature

We were lucky to find Chris two years ago to help with our son's English when he moved from India to the UK. My son was overwhelmed with the change of the system in his early days but the personal touch offered by Chris made a huge difference in boosting his confidence. Chris quickly identified my son's weak areas and systematically worked with him in improving all aspects of his language skills.

What had started as a summer coaching for a few weeks went on for the next two years which turned out to be a great learning experience. It is needless to say that my son couldn't have achieved 'A' grades in both GCSE English language and Literature subjects without the professional tutoring delivered by Chris. We can't thank Chris enough for giving us much more than what we asked for.
VT, Fetcham: GCSE English Language and Literature

Chris has taken teaching as it gives him joy to see the young generation perform and improve. To him, it is like a hobby that he loves and not just a profession. I thought it was a bit difficult to change my son's attitude towards learning. Now when Chris is not there, my son really feels there is something missing. My son is now enjoying learning his most difficult subject. We can not really thank Chris enough.
MA, Horsham: GCSE English Language and Literature

Chris was very patient and positive/supportive with a somewhat reluctant 16 year old boy, and really helped him progress and also gain confidence with his maths and English. Chris has a very good understanding of the exam and education system and was keen to know exactly what my son was working on and what help he could provide, tailored to the exam texts etc. He was calm and patient and my son responded well to this, and even when tired after a day at school would try hard at the tutoring session. A very supportive positive approach. Highly recommended.

Hello,

My name is Ina and I teach languages from home in my spare time and mostly on weekends.

Teaching Experience:

During my studies in high school I had the opportunity to gain a considerable work experience in various well known and reputable companies in my country. I worked as a language tutor and interpreter in two language centres, a translation agency and a real estate company. In addition, I had the opportunity to work as an office administrator in an international association, where I was given the responsibility for the organisation of cultural events and campaigns, recruitment and management of Italian tutors, as well as for communication and assistance to clients and members of the organisation. I currently work in the field of HR, but as teaching is an everlasting passion, I like to develop myself and help students in my spare time.

I am eager to discover the best approach for each individual and task and work accordingly. I have always applied my creativity and my work experience and people skills have helped develop this further.

Personal Description:
I studied Theology at both Leeds Trinity College and Durham University, where I achieved a First Class Honours degree and later Merit. After doing regular guest teaching and classroom assistance, I took the PTLLS Level 4 at the Advance Training Academy and began tutoring in 2014. Since then I have taught people from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, and Sunderland (to name just a few examples). Each of my students has steadily increased their grades, achieving A*-C.

My aim is to provide first quality tuition in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to help people become more confident in these subjects. I am an individual who is committed to making education a lasting experience rather than a lecture to be endured. My experiences have taught me that each student has the potential to grow and change. To that end I take on students of all dispositions, from the confident and capable to nervous and struggling type.

I am based in the North East of England and offer face-to-face tuition to anyone in this region. However, I offer online tuition to people from other regions (Skype, phone or email).

If you want extra help, email me and we can set up an ice-breaker session. Each lesson from then onwards is specifically tailored to your learning style. We can then focus on a combination of extra content and exam technique. I will continuously ask for feedback to make sure that you are satisfied with the quality of service.

Consider the benefits of having a tutor:
Raise your grades
Increase your self-confidence
Access to continuous support and advice

Why use me personally?
I am patient, creative, and dedicated in helping all students be successful. I have worked with diverse sets of students with wide range of needs. Therefore I am able to work with students of all abilities as I am flexible and adaptable to different settings.
My lessons are very comprehensive. You will typically be given a handout on the relevant topic, discussion and past paper questions and a background on the key critical thinkers. They are each adjusted to your learning style, so we can get quite creative!

I am DBS checked and can provide references upon request.

Teaching Experience:

My experience is threefold:
Classroom assistance: I did classroom work at Gateshead Volunteering and Opportunities Centre and New College Durham (2013). My duties involved: helping struggling students with classroom activities, helping them to express themselves and dealing with classroom behavioural issues. When working with students, I was noted for being approachable, compassionate, kind and patient.
Guest teaching: I gave regular guest lessons in Theology and Religious studies at Leeds Trinity University College, Jesmond Methodist Church, Gosforth High School and the Royal Grammar School (2011-14). My lessons were recognised as well-prepared, thought-provoking, and thorough.
Personal tutoring: since I started tutoring in the North East, I have taught students from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, Gosforth, and Sunderland. I have also given online tuition to students at various regions of the UK (2013-). See testimonials for clients' views on me.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer two types of tuition:
Face-to-face: tuition is conducted at the student's home. It is always good practice to have an adult around the house. Face-to-face tuition is available to any student within reasonable travelling distance of Newcastle City Centre.
Online: tuition is conducted via phone, Skype and email (depending on the client preference). Online tuition is available to any student in the UK.

Each lesson is tailored to individual needs. The preliminary meeting will focus on your learning needs, and from this we will establish your goals for the tuition and the process for helping you to meet them. We will discuss how we can make the sessions play to your individual learning styles and strengths.

In lessons, we usually focus on two specific areas:
Extra teaching: we will usually have a discussion on a particular topic.
You will be given a detailed hand-out, some discussion questions, and (if necessary) a brief background on the important key thinkers.
Essay-writing: I will provide an essay-writing formula, which we will then
apply to past-paper questions, which will support you to write essays based on past exam papers. As part of the service, I will review the answer and provide detailed feedback to support further learning.

Testimonies from previous tutees:

"Michael has been an incredibly reliable tutor, the lessons were very well planned and clearly thought out. It was very helpful that he was willing to cater to individual learning styles and willing to respond to feedback. I think that he would be most helpful for those doing GCSEs and A Levels. Overall, a positive experience, he put in maximum effort to the tutoring sessions."

Hannah.

"You always prepared for each session sending materials prior to the tutoring. You are a very committed teacher, dedicated and caring. You impressed Anna with your knowledge and broadened and deepened her thoughts and ideas as well as her vocabulary. She would not have achieved her grade B if it was not for you. Thank you so much for all your help and support."

Ann

"Michael is a dedicated, supportive and patient tutor, and took the time to create tutoring sessions which were designed with jack's learning style in mind. Michael gave excellent advice and guidance in his subject in preparation for both the AS RE exam, but also essay writing techniques for A2 as he knew this was an area which Jack needed help in developing his skills. I would have no hesitation in recommending Michael's services to anyone. Thank you Michael for your help and support!"

Suzanne

"Rachel was home educated and had chosen Religious Studies as a GCSE in February and the exam was in June so she and Michael had their work cut out for them! Michael worked with Rachel helping her to direct her studies and fill in the gaps of her knowledge. He discussed concepts to give her a more well-rounded understanding of the subject and helped her structure her answers for a GCSE exam. He did all this in an engaging manner which resulted in Rachel developing a real interest and enjoyment of the subject and she achieved an A* in her exam! Michael is a very dedicated and supportive tutor and we would highly recommend him!"

Sharon

"Michael gives my son Joe tutoring, which Joe was rather dubious about to begin with, however it is working well. He is studying for A levels and has dyslexia, I wanted a tutor that could vary their teaching method to accommodate a dyslexic learner and he has done that. Michael clarifies at the start of each session what will be covered, ensures that is what my son requires and at the end that he has understood the session."

Personal Description:
Nice to meet you! I'm Rebecca; I'm 27 years old and graduated from Bangor University with a BSc in Psychology with Clinical and Health Psychology. After university I spent a year as a specialist support worker for adults with autism and autistic traits. With my psychology degree and experience I am more than happy to cater for students that might need a bit of extra help, and have experience teaching students with Aspergers, Personality Disorder, and depression.

Following uni, I spent nearly 2 years teaching English as a foreign language in Japan. Whilst in Japan, I also learnt how to speak conversational Japanese, and can also read and write hiragana, katakana, and first-grade level kanji. I now tutor English and Japanese full time, and have registered my own language services company.

To better understand what is needed for GCSE Japanese, I took my GCSE in 2016 achieving an A*, and plan to take N4 in the Japanese Proficiency test next year. I am happy to help students work towards their GCSE or N5 level Japanese, and I am constantly training to improve my students learning experience.

I welcome any students with special needs; I have vast experience in the Psychological field and work well with anyone who needs that little bit of extra help and attention! I also work great with kids who need help boosting their English and Maths at school- in the last year one of my 5-year-old student's grades have gone from below average to excellent in their school report.

I'm currently teaching in the Northamptonshire area, and have a classroom set up in my home where I do most of my teaching from.

Please note: if you would like me to teach at your home or meet somewhere public, I do charge extra to cover my travel costs (30p per mile) with a minimum 6 travel charge.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience includes the 2 years I spent teaching English as a foreign language in Japan, where I designed the yearly teaching schedules, lesson plans, and then taught the lessons. My students were from the age of 3 to 65, so I have experience in teaching all ages. Whilst in Japan I also taught beginner's Japanese to foreigners living in my local area.

Since returning to England in 2013 I've been tutoring English and Japanese full time. I took my GCSE Japanese in 2016 achieving an A*, and plan to take N4 of the Japanese proficiency test next year. I have also been teaching one of my younger students English, Math, and other related subjects required for primary school. I currently have more than 20 students learning Japanese 1-to-1 and relish the challenges and individuality between each new student.

At university I volunteered for several groups including an activity group for disadvantaged children, assisting in secondary school classrooms, volunteering at the local mental health unit and volunteering as a charity shop assistant.

Prior to this, I often tutored my younger sister (who has Asperger's Syndrome) and helped her to understand her school work. I have also clocked up countless hours of babysitting for parents around the local area.

Tutoring Approach:

For teaching English as a foreign language, or when teaching Japanese, I believe a fun, active approach is the most effective. A short amount of time is spent drilling sentences and words; but then these new words and phrases should be used in role plays, games, or challenges to make the new vocabulary stick.

When teaching English, debates about the subject material cause important points to be remembered, help students to structure their arguments more clearly, and let students consider what the most important points are and consider counter arguments. Games for younger children and a variety of different activities to help enforce new vocabulary and sentences are also important.

Personal Description:
In July 2013, I graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, undertaking a BMus (Hons) Music degree (2.1) with a principle study in singing (1st). I took two gap years before going to university to gain experience in the music and drama fields. I have studied modules at university ranging from Bach to Beethoven and Sibelius to Weill.

Teaching Experience:

In my two gap years I was a gap student at Bedales Schools for a term and then was invited back to cover a member of music staff. Responsibilities included teaching 8-13 year old mixed pupils classroom music as well as supervising music practices. I also tutored pupils through grade 5 theory achieving merit and distinction grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very laid-back attitude to teaching and will teach you in similar ways that I have been taught. I understand totally that some pupils need several ways of explaining things so bring a variety of teaching methods to my lessons. I make teaching interesting and engaging and always try to relate the subject to the pupil. I have been very fortunate to learn under some inspirational teachers and would love to be able to carry on their enthusiasm to other students.

Personal Description:
I am a 55-year-old mathematics graduate, living near Frodsham & working full-time in the chemical industry. I am married with two grown-up children. I find the tuition of maths a fresh & interesting challenge away from my usual work & I believe that, because of this, my enthusiasm for the subject is transmitted to my students.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring, one-to-one, for 12 years & have also spent time working with small groups of students in a local comprehensive school in the run-up to national exams. I have worked with students of ages ranging from 10 years to 18 years & have also worked with adults on the mathematics units of their university degrees.

Tutoring Approach:

During the time I have been tutoring, I have received many cards & e-mails commenting, almost invariably, on my patience. I appreciate that meeting a tutor & starting to work one-to-one may be daunting for some students, especially if they are not confident with the subject. With this in mind, I try to encourage a relaxed informality from the outset, with occasional reminders, if necessary, of why I'm there! I realize that each student is an individual & try to deliver what they (& their parents) want from the sessions. I welcome parents' involvement & will address any particular concerns that they have.

Personal Description:
I am Pharmacist. I have masters in Pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Sunderland. I have taught primary school students to University students as a private tutor. I am able to make learning real to the individual by explaining the concept of different topics in a way that is practical and understandable. This method of teaching makes it easier for the student to remember more.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught various age groups. Primary, GCSE and A-Levels. (Edexcel/OCR/AQA)

Tutoring Approach:

I have learnt over the years that students learn in different ways. I try to identify how best the student likes and learn best and apply it accordingly. However I have achieved success the most by making the student understand the rational behind the solution for any challenge.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate student from University of Bath major in Interpreting and Translating(Chinese/English) and I've got a bachelors degree on Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Beijing Language and Culture University. Teaching assistant at Beijing Language and Culture University - teaching adult students Mandarin and Chinese culture relating course.

Tutoring Approach:

Approach to tutoring depends on the level of my student and the purpose of learning Mandarin. For exam purpose I will be more focused on helping the student learn exam relating materials and help him/her improve through practicing. For beginner level, I will be focusing more on combining Chinese culture related knowledge with language learning so the student will have a better understanding of the linguistic and cultural difference and it will be a good base for future learning.
