Personal Description:
I might be expensive but I am worth it as your child will see a marked improvement in their results and confidence levels. To assess whether I am the right tutor for you I offer the first lesson for free.

I also offer short intensive Maths courses for entrance to American Universities on some weekends. Each course is 2 days long and is specifically tailored for UK students. It is specifically designed to bridge the gap in knowledge, format and techniques between the GCSE Maths exam and the SAT exam. If you use UK Tutors to contact me about the courses I will deduct their fee from the course price.

I was awarded a First Class Honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of an innovation company.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade. Apart from the usual syllabuses I am experienced at teaching students the Maths section of the SATs and ACTs in order to get scholarships to American Universities.

Tutoring Approach:

My tuition method involves making Maths and Physics fun so that children and young adults will remember their lessons and overcome the "I can't do science" syndrome. So that you can assess whether or not I am the right tutor for your child I offer the first lesson for free.

Personal Description:
APPOINTMENT SLOTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE (as of March 2015):
Friday 7pm onwards and holiday times.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Please be aware that I do charge for travelling over 30 miles (roundtrip: 15 miles each way):
30-40 mile roundtrip - 5
41-50 mile roundtrip - 10
51-60 mile roundtrip - 15
61-70 mile roundtrip - 20

Personal Description:
I am a retired Maths Teacher who has recently moved into the Neston area.
I have a Certificate in Education (Advanced Maths) and a First Class Honours Degree from The Open University.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Secondary Maths for the past 30 years in the Southport and Liverpool areas.
My last post was teaching years 7-13 at a Comprehensive in Liverpool. I taught all abilities in years 7-9 then Foundation/Higher GCSE and A Level Maths.
I have been a private tutor for 6 years.
I am also a Senior Examiner for Maths GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe children when they say they do not understand (the majority want to learn, certainly on a one to one basis) and I will therefore try different approaches until we reach the understanding of the topic not just rote learning.
I have access to numerous exam papers from different boards and being an Examiner know what is being looked for and the different ways to gain marks.

Personal Description:
I have a PhD in Chemistry and have a passion for both chemistry (all sciences) and maths. I am a very understanding, empathetic person who can relate easily to the problems that some pupils have with these subjects.

I am married with three teenage children.

Teaching Experience:

I am a professional tutor (over 20 years experience) of Maths and Chemistry/ Science from Primary School(Key Stages 1 and 2) to Secondary School (Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level) and also the Eleven Plus examinations, offering a personal and focused approach to helping pupils achieve their exam potential.

I have consistently improved pupils' grades and have improved pupil's grades up to 2 levels (and in an exceptional case 3 levels).

I have also obtained good grades for students who were considering dropping a subject, or indeed were advised by their teachers to drop a subject.

I have worked with a wide variety and culture of students, helping them to develop excellent revision skills. As mentioned above, I have taught all age groups with varying skill levels.

My aim is to make pupils more enthusiastic about their subjects and use real life examples, so they can understand why they study certain topics.

Hard work together with fun gets the best out of pupils and I tailor the work to an individual. I have worked extensively with all syllabuses including AQA, OCR and Edexcel (GCSE and iGCSE)

Tutoring Approach:

As mentioned earlier I am very enthusiastic and passionate, and get a real buzz from pupils excelling in their education. I hope to get pupils enthused likewise, and encourage hard work with fun.

Every pupil is different and I am very adaptable, and very able to use different methods to get the message across to the individual.

Homework is strongly encouraged !!

Personal Description:
My name is Ellen and I have been teaching for fourteen years. I have a vast amount of interests and hobbies. In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinema, eating out, theatre, walking, reading, eBay and I also work in a shop part-time too.
I have a clean driving license and I am willing to travel to pupil's houses, or they're welcome to be tutored at mine.
I am hard-working, committed and always eager to learn. I rarely have a day off sick, I just keep going!
I am also a member of a local meet up group, which is based in Chester and North Wales. I often participate in these events, I feel it has allowed me to meet more like-minded people. I'm a land lady on rented property, so I have to be professional and organised. This is when my teaching skills come into place!
I strongly believe you have to live life to the full, and grab every opportunity you can. Life's too short.

Teaching Experience:

I have a vast amount of teaching experience. I have taught in the primary sector, ranging from Nursery up to Year Six.
Within my teaching career, I have been a History and PSHE Co-ordinator, where I was responsible for up-dating the school's policy, ordering resources, monitoring other teachers performance in these subjects and organising educational visits too.
I always ensure children's work is marked daily, with constructive or positive comments on their work. I also think praising the children is important, this is done through reward systems. When in permanent teaching positions, I have always ensured that the environment is bright, colourful, fresh and stimulating. Wall displays, illustrating children's work from a varied ability is important.
I always ensure affective discipline is carried out in the classroom and I always accommodate for each child's needs, differentiating if necessary.
During my teaching career I have organised class assemblies in front of the whole school, ensuring that each child has a piece of reading to be read or an acting role to be carried out, the assemblies often link to their theme they've been learning that particular term.
I always follow the Foundation Curriculum and the National Curriculum in a professional way.
I can work as part of a team and communicate with parents on a professional level. I'm hard-working and always ensure that children are happy and stimulated in their learning environment.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been tutoring since 2007, however, in 2012 I did take a break. I always ensure my lessons are appropriate for the child's learning, and after a day at school, I always try to make the lessons as stimulating as possible.
Sometimes the tasks may relate to the child's experience, this is done through reading and writing. I also incorporate celebrations and multi-cultural events in the lessons too, I feel this broadens the child's outlook in life.
My lessons incorporate writing, reading and comprehension.
I always give feedback to the child and parents at the end of each lesson. I ensure my lessons are delivered in a professional manner.

Personal Description:
I am an Economics graduate from Hanover University, Germany and teach part-time in a successful private college in the city of Bath. Since 2004 I have been working as a freelance tutor of Economics, as a translator (from English into German and vice versa), as a journalist and book author. Prior to that I worked as a technical support engineer for four years and as an office manager for six years. I live in Bath, am married and have two children. I love teaching, especially Economics, because it deals with some of the most fundamental problems of our society. To solve them we need to understand Economics.

Teaching Experience:

Since 2004 I have been tutoring AS and A2-level students in small groups and one-to-one, and university preparation courses in classes of up to 15 students. I have taught the AQA, Edexcel, and OCR syllabuses. Most of the individual students were re-sitting exams, most of whom improved their grade, often significantly.

Tutoring Approach:

First of all I ascertain any particular areas the student needs help with most urgently. I then review the basics with the student to make sure that these have been well understood. We then systematically work through the required subject matter, checking progress with the help of exam-style questions and past examination papers.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is to ensure that each lesson is an enjoyable, creative and challenging experience for the student(s), and that different skills are practised. A wide variety of activities are used to ensure that the students remain engaged with and focused on the lesson aims. Where possible I let the students give me the language rather than 'feed' the language to them. The aim is always to give the students the space they need to learn, and to help them make the most of the learning opportunities presented in each lesson.

Here are some of the things my students have said:

1. Benoit
Date of feedback: 26 October 2014
Company: ArcelorMittal
"Hi Mark. First of all, I would like to thank you again for that great week spent in Portsmouth. I really enjoyed that way of working, that way of teaching.
I came back to France on Friday and I'm convinced that my English improved during that stay. Even if one week remains too short to realize huge improvement.
Anyway, I'm trying to follow your advice and I've podcasted many '6 minutes' on BBC. Iread a lot of English texts as well.
Hope to keep that motivation.
Thanks and have a nice week, Benoit (Ben)

2. Geraldine
Date of feedback: 12 June 2015
Company: Renault Trucks (Volvo)
"Thanks a lot for my teachers. And a particularly thank to Mark B [myself], because it's the first time I understand present, future, past."

3. Pavel
Date of feedback: 19 June 2015
Company: Coal mining company based in Czech Republic.
"Very good teachers, Mark W especially."

4. Patrick
Date of feedback: 14 August 2015
Company: Bayer AG
"It was a pleasure to learn and practice my English. It was a very good mixture of all teaching part and equipment Mark have chosen."

5. Thomas
Date of feedback: 31 July 2015
Company: Bayer AG
"Mark is a wonderful teacher; he is well-experienced and trained and I like the way of teaching. Books and materials better than the year before!"

Personal Description:
I have a Bachelor of Science with majors in Geography and Geology. After working in the field of geoscience for several years I wanted a new challenge and have a new passion for education.

Teaching Experience:

For the past year I have been working as an SEN Teaching Assistant in a secondary school. In this role I primarily teach maths. I also teach geography, science and English.

There is a wide variety in the learning needs of my individual students. This has given me an understanding of how to tailor learning to the needs of an individual student.

The mid-level GCSE Mathematics class that I assist attained a 97% pass-rate in GCSE Higher Mathematics. Two year 10 SEN students that I have worked closely with both received a C mark in GCSE statistics, after showing vast improvement over the academic year.

During the previous school year I tutored an A Level geography student. She received an A grade in her final exam. I also tutored two year 11 mathematics students who received a B and C grade respectively.

During my time in third and fourth year at university I tutored several first year geology students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that each student has the potential to achieve the grade that they are aiming for. In a lot cases though their learning needs to be supported and nurtured in the right way to help them achieve this.

I aim to identify strengths and weaknesses that each individual student possesses. By helping a student consolidate their strengths and by tackling their weaknesses head on I believe that I can help them improve markedly in a short period of time. I also aim to help a student put into place new skills that will help them improve their level of independence while learning. These skills are important to learn and are relevant in many aspects of life.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD in Chemistry and currently working in a secondary school. I have also been tutoring and would like to continue doing so as I find it to be a very rewarding job. I have an extensive experience as I have been in this field for more than 20 years.

As a parent, I know that my children benefited from being tutored prior to their GCSEs and A levels. Due to this reason, I would like to provide others with the same opportunity to boost their confidence so that they can excel in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. I am a calm, collected and patient individual who enjoys supporting and encouraging students to take an interest in Science due to its fast-growing field with a vast array of job prospects.

Teaching Experience:

Through working at a secondary school in Surrey since 2007, I have developed key skills to support the learning of pupils within a structured teaching situation, small group withdrawal or individually as required. Working with individual pupils allows me to maintain their personal confidence, promote positive behaviour and encourage them to be independent individuals.

Furthermore, I have also worked as Lecturer of Chemistry from which I gained experience in preparing suitable resources for all topics and delivering lectures to a class environment. I always monitored the progress of my students and ensured they received sufficient guidance.

Tutoring Approach:

Along with working during the day , I provide tuitions in the evenings and weekends in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths. As I am a flexible individual, I ensure that my tuitions are tailored to meet each tutee's needs.
Usually, I begin with ensuring that they have a strong foundation of the topic before studying it in greater detail. A strong foundation allows the tutee to apply their knowledge more effectively to exam style questions.
If the tutee would like to consolidate a particular topic, I would prepare various questions either from past papers or text-books to ensure that their understanding is clear. Also, I believe that memorising key definitions and facts can be very useful in an exam. Therefore, I use various memory games, flash cards and mini-tests to ensure that the tutee can recall these key definitions in a time-pressured exam environment. Through being a published research chemist, I have been able to understand various topics in detail such as, 'photo catalysed transformation of some toxic substances on semi-conducting chalcogenides'. I have also written a thesis on this topic and therefore, I believe, that my knowledge will allow me to tutor for A-Level Chemistry very effectively.
Due to my ample experience of working in different fields, I have gained good communication and problem solving skills. I believe in having a high standard in work and hope that it will reflect in my tutee's progress.
