Being mixed British and French-Swiss, I am able to offer authentic French whilst still appreciating the difficulties from an English speaker's point of view. I am also qualified to teach Spanish to all levels and have years of experience in teaching the language.
I have a friendly approach and my lessons are very well organised with a sense of purpose. They are also individually tailored to meet the student's specific needs. I have worked as a GCSE examiner on numerous occasions and have coached and taught AS/A level groups.

I have been teaching drama students from the of age 6 - 60 since 1999. With some of them moving on to be successful actors themselves. However, I do understand that not all students want to be actors and approach each individuals needs accordingly.

I went to school in Rugby and have lived here off and on for the last 50 years. I retired early from teaching to go travelling in Europe in a Camper Van. My hobbies include DIY, cooking, pub quizzes, golf, walking and following Chesterfield football club. I enjoy socialising and spending time with my family. I work occasionally for an out of school tuition service teaching Mathematics to students who are out of school for medical reasons. My main subjects are A level and GCSE Economics, A level and GCSE Business and GCSE Mathematics. I also teach privately and over the last 2 years have taught seven students. The 3 students I taught mathematics to both achieved C grades at higher level. Initially they were studying foundation level! The 4 students who studied A Level Economics with me all achieved A* in their examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 30 years in 3 different schools and 2 colleges of further education. I have taught Economics, Business Studies and Mathematics to GCSE level and Business Studies and Economics to A level. The students I have taught have nearly always achieved their potential grade or better. I have taught students of all levels of ability and always established a good working relationship with them.

Tutoring Approach:

I have experiece of teaching students on a one to one basis having taught Economics and Mathematics as a private tutor. I believe it is important to establish a positive working relationship with each student I teach. It is important to establish early on the weaknesses in understanding of different topics and where possible to turn these weaknesses into strengths. Very often problems in understanding are due to a lack of confidence sometimes because the tutee is reluctant to ask for clarification in the classroom or because they simply don't understand the basics of the subject. On a one to one basis the tutor has more time to explain the basics and develop the skills of the tutee and the tutee is more likely to respond to this without feeling they are inadequate.
An important part of tutoring is practicing exam type questions and past examination papers in order to increase the students confidence and ability to answer questions under examination conditions. The key to success is establishing which topics are easy for the student to understand and making sure the students can answer any possible exam questions on these topics.

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 7 months in a Belgian secondary school. I taught 11-14 year old children Latin there. I've also taught Life Science and Art History to 14-16 year olds. My appointment was temporary and so I went on doing something else. From time to time I have been asked to do some tutoring. I hope this way I can help educate the new generation that is willing to learn.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe anyone can learn anything though depending on our skills some people just have to put in extra effort to get the same results. I therefore try to help in easing and structuring this extra effort. During my research I worked as a Private A level tutor for the children of a number of overseas Professors - teaching A level Physics and (through one of those students) was invited to teach Physics to A level students at a Ladies Grammar school in Manchester when their teacher became ill. I also taught A level Physics at the Trafford Park College of Further Education in Stretford, Manchester for 2 years

One to One - focussing on parts of the curriculum where the student is having difficulty in understanding
Create a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. The student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. One-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students' personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.

Depending on the student's needs and learning style I encourage students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don't lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students' homework for them!

Personal Description:
I am a second-year BA History and Anthropology student at Goldsmiths, University of London. I frequently get firsts (A grades) in my essay assignments. My interests include reading, writing, comedy and drama.

I understand how helpful tutoring is. I had a great experience getting extra help from a tutor when studying for my Maths and Physics GCSE exams. I want to give that same quality of help to those who need it.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching, but outside the tutoring environment.

I have done work with 'lunch club.' This was programme run by the English language school Frances King for older students learning English as a foreign language. I would take them out for lunch and help them practice their English.

In addition, I have volunteered at Snowflake School assisting teachers in one-to-one lessons with autistic children.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is broken down into three simple steps: 1. Help the student to identify their concerns; 2. Work together to come up with a plan of action; 3. Cooperate to implement the plan.

Throughout is an emphasis on learning how to think, not just what to think. I believe attaining higher grades is easier when students understand the basic principles of comprehension, memory and speed.

Also, crucially, I hope my students will become even more interested in the subject they need help with, maybe as a result of being 'caught' by it somehow. This is really important for critical thinking and academic success, I believe.

Personal Description:
My name is Jasmine, I am 19 years old, and I am currently studying TESOL and Japanese at York St John University. My career goal is to become a translator, and I am working hard to help that happen. My hobbies are reading, writing, and music, which is also how I spend most of my free time (that and running around after my two younger brothers!).

N.B.
As my home address is in Cornwall, and my university address is in York, I am available to tutor in Cornwall during the holidays, and in York during term time.

Teaching Experience:

Though I have had no professional experience tutoring, during secondary school I was a mentor for helping younger children with reading and writing. I also have several language partners that I help to enhance their English skills as well as correcting their grammar. My university course includes the TESOL certificate, which specialises in teaching English as a second language, improving my teaching skills.

Tutoring Approach:

As stated previously, while I have never professionally tutored, I think this role would be good for me. I am patient and persevering, and understand through my own experiences that it is not always possible to learn through one method, but instead, there are many ways to learn new information that is tailored to your needs. While I am young meaning I may have less experience in this field, I also think an advantage of my age is that I am very open minded.
