Personal Description:
I am a mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. I am familiar with many aspects of secondary education through my daughter, who has recently completed her A levels at Hills Road 6th form college, and a son at secondary school. My daughter has just begun reading PPE at at Oriel College Oxford. I am currently working at the Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Mathematics and Physics, to undergraduates from a wide variety of disciplines. I have particular experience of teaching Mathematics to people whose primary interests lie in Business studies and in Engineering. I also gained valuable insight into adult education when I taught adult part-time students.
I have also provided tutorials for students with many different requirements including A level and undergraduate Physics & Mathematics courses and, for example, GMAT Mathematics prep for MBA entrance exams.
Recently I have had the opportunity to tutor intensively for STEP tests and this has become a personal interest -there is always a new challenge, and the examiners are skilled at finding new ways to test the same knowledge level.

Tutoring Approach:

The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

Parental Comment
Hi Brian,

I hope you're enjoying the Summer break.

I just wanted to let you know that Kalen has a A* for maths and an A for further Maths. He's very pleased with this and on behalf of him I'd like to say thank you so much for all your help.

Overall he got A*A*AAB and is off to Warwick to do a general engineering course.

Thanks again Brian,

Suneela

STUDENT COMMENTS
Dear Brian. I found our tutorials very helpful and feel much more able to hit the ground running when I return to Oxford. I will be sure to recommend you to anyone else I know in need of tuition.
Peter N, returning undergraduate.

Brian helped me to revise my university maths before starting an MSc course 10 years after completing my undergraduate degree. He was patient, non-judgmental of my rusty abilities, and gave useful examples of mathematical problems to help explain some very difficult concepts. He is very reliable and a pleasure to work with. I would have no problem recommending Brian to others and would certainly see him again for further tuition should the need arise.
David C, returning graduate student

Another parent comment
Brian is helping my daughter who attends Hills Road with both physics and maths and she has just had her fifth session. This is the first time with have engaged with a personal tutor so really wasn't sure what we were doing and started out with some trepidation. We soon were able to ensure that the hour we spent with Brian was really productive and useful. Brian has been really helpful and and this has increased my daughters confidence and knowledge which is exactly what we were hoping for.

New student comments
I'm just emailing to tell you that my physics unit 2 exam went quite well. There were only a few small questions that I couldn't answer. I will tell you my result when I get them on the 14th of August. I must thank you for helping me over the past few months. I really have no clue how badly these exams would have gone if you did not help me. Thank you so much for your help.
Calum M AS Physics student.

Personal Description:
A postgraduate student at Cass Business School, studying Actuarial Science. Just graduated from University of Manchester with Mathematics with Finance.
As a native speaker of Mandarin and Cantonese, I grew up in Hong Kong and had been studied in Malaysia for 2 years and Hong Kong for the rest. In addition, I have 2 younger sisters as a eldest brother and therefore I do well in tutoring. In my past Foundation year, I gained A* in Pure Mathematics, and A* in Business Mathematics and A in Computer. I am convinced that my academic achievement makes me a good fit in tutoring Mathematics for GCSE/A-Level students.

Teaching Experience:

In past, in Hong Kong and Malaysia, I tutored friends and anyone who were around me in Mathematics, which gave me loads of chance to enhance my teaching approaches.
I taught in Manchester last 2 years as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I would be more than happy to go trough past exam papers and exercises as for Maths with students.
Surely, to prepare notes and advice certain study skills for the students in Mathematics. I reckon that tutoring in a friendly manner would enhance learning process instead of forcing the student to do as said. You are more then welcome to have a briefing before the first tuition in order to make sure we have the same goal.

Personal Description:
I am a biological and medicinal chemistry graduate from the University of Exeter, a top-ten university. My degree focuses upon the design and synthesis of drugs and their interaction with biological systems. As such, I have an in-depth knowledge of biochemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry. I have just finished my PhD in physical biochemistry.

I can explain topics within biology and chemistry simply and am willing to help with anything from understanding topics to coursework. At college, I studied the International Baccalaureate, using both A-level and IB textbooks. Due to this, I can teach both IB and A-level students.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching AQA A-level chemistry and GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

Very relaxed and easy going. I would give lessons on the syllabus and try to get the student to participate in them by answering questions. We could then revise topics together to make sure everything is learnt and there are no problems in understanding. This would culminate in looking at past papers and going through model answers.

Personal Description:
I have been teaching most of my working life. However, last year was entirely spent in fulltime education. I have Just finished a Masters degree specialising in Shakespeare and wish to make a return to teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for roughly 8 years now. I have taught English as a foreign language in Japan for a major language school. I worked as a private tutor in Japan and Australia teaching ESL. In Australia, I also worked with an import company improving the business English of their staff. I have taught Exercise Physiology both at University level for ANU in Sydney, and in an adult education environment. I have ample experience in sport coaching, having coached school children and university students in a variety of sports. I have taught on three continents, taught everyone from children as young as 1 to retirees. I have experience in a variety of subjects and people from various backgrounds. I am used to teaching individuals and groups.

Tutoring Approach:

People have different strengths and weaknesses. Both these need to be adequately construed before any teaching method can be finalised. Usually, I would try to ascertain the students strengths, to facilitate learning, and weaknesses, to identify areas of improvement. It is important to interpret these factors according to the framework of curriculum / examiner requirements. I endeavour to make my sessions fun for students. I try to remind myself that their tutoring sessions are often at the end of a long days work. This makes patience very important.

Personal Description:
I was born in Rome (Italy) and moved to London when I was 7 years old. I was fortunate enough to have experienced what I would refer to as the highs and lows of learning. Having been exposed to a completely new cultural and educational environment at such a young age really helped me to assess the differences and similarities of teaching styles in both Italy and England. Despite the challenges I faced when learning English, I consider myself extremely lucky as I am now able to look back upon that experience with fondness. The English educational system has allowed me develop skills I was not aware I had, I really learnt the value of education throughout the course of my academic life.

I graduated from Coventry University with a 2:1 in Sociology Ba(Hons). My first graduate job was as a Sales Administrator in an e-commerce company, 3 months later I was promoted to Customer Support Manager, and a year after that I became a Business Development Manager and Customer Support Manager (Operations Manager to avoid the lengthy description).

Having moved out of my family home at 18 I have had a broad range of work experience. Ranging from bar tending and waitressing, to supervisory and translation roles in market research companies. In the summer of 2013 I was selected for the Fast Stream Summer Diversity Internship Programme which enabled me to work within the Civil Service Commission in the Cabinet Office and provided me with invaluable experience. I am fortunate to be bilingual, this has always helped with finding work.

I undertook a foreign language teaching programme during my final year at Coventry University, which would have enabled me to teach Italian professionally. Unfortunately, due to the pressure of my 10,000 word dissertation, upcoming exams, and pressing assignment deadlines, I was unable to complete the training. However, this has always been somewhat of a regret of mine as I thoroughly enjoyed the training I was given and would have loved to have had the time to teach.

Teaching Experience:

I have always tutored in Italian throughout the years, my clients have ranged from primary school children, to secondary school students, to adults. As mentioned above, I have a broad understanding of teaching thanks to the programme I attended at Coventry University. I thoroughly enjoyed my Sociology course at university and have continued to read up on the subject as well as watching Sociology related documentaries following the end of my studies. I would love to share my knowledge with students, whether they are struggling to grasp concepts, or just need extra support.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning should be enjoyable. It doesn't need to be complicated, breaking theories and concepts down in their simplest forms and relating them to real life events which resonate with the student is often an incredibly successful technique.
