Personal Description:
I have a life-long love of English in general and of Shakespeare in particular, and have always enjoyed communicating that enthusiasm to other people, helping them to develop understanding, confidence, appreciation and a love of language. I have an MA degree in English from Cambridge University and am an IGCSE examiner for the Cambridge International Examinations Board.

My early background in retail management, several years at director level in international advertising, then thirty years as a teacher, with theatre running as a constant thread throughout my life, all combine to make me a particularly effective communicator.

As well as offering private tuition, I also run school drama workshops, direct plays, and work as a freelance writer/editor and voice-over. I have been involved in over fifty theatrical productions - acting or directing - as well as giving regular readings and public presentations.

Having lived and worked professionally for several years in France, I am fluent in French and can offer coaching in French literature and language.

"Simon is the complete professional, directing and managing large-scale productions, nurturing emerging talent, and running a very successful education programme, as well as being an inspirational teacher himself." (Arnold D. - former colleague)

PLEASE NOTE: I am now largely unavailable until mid-July 2017 but do get in touch in case we can discuss possibilities.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Head of English and Drama at independent schools for over twenty-five years, and am regarded as a charismatic and inspirational teacher. I have many years' experience of Drama in general and Shakespeare in particular on and off stage (studying, teaching, acting and directing).

"Every pupil has selective memories of their teachers. Every past pupil I ever meet selects Simon as their most memorable teacher. They remember his effervescence in the classroom, his delight in their achievements and his encyclopaedic knowledge of Shakespeare." (Tim R. - colleague since 1987)

"Simon was simply a brilliant Head of Department, being that rare combination of high academic and able, articulate communicator. His subject knowledge is unmatched in all my teaching experience, especially of Shakespeare's works, and his inspired teaching produced enthusiastic, successful pupils during his twenty years." (Kay C. - colleague since 1998)

Tutoring Approach:

Need to gain more confidence with spoken or written language? Find Shakespeare hard to cope with, or poetry difficult to understand? Wish to develop your creative writing ability? Need to practise interview technique and improve presentation skills?

I can help. I give coaching in drama, literary analysis and practical criticism, particularly of poetry, and I specialise in teaching Shakespeare.

In addition, my earlier background in advertising and marketing is particularly useful in helping students develop their interview technique and presentation skills.

If distance is a problem, I am happy to offer on-line tuition, such as via Skype.

(For adults wishing to learn more about Shakespeare or to understand and appreciate poetic technique, I am happy to undertake small groups - please enquire about special rates.)

"Simon is an inspirational teacher of English Language, Literature and of Drama. His ability to engage and motivate pupils is of the highest order as is his pursuit of excellence in all that he does, both within the classroom situation and in workshops. All of this is well reflected in the results he has achieved, in particular with both academic English and Drama scholarship candidates over his years in post." (Dr Gerry H. - Managing Director Open University Worldwide)

Personal Description:
After obtaining my Master degree in St. Petersburg Academy (Russia, 2000) Ph.D. in fine art through Sorbonne (Paris, 2008), I moved to the UK and have been teaching part time with the Russian Art School in Oxford and Russian School in London. I specialise in Russian language, graphic design and textile art.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored private students and taught classes of adolescent and pre-adolescent children through the Russian School in London as described above. Previously I have also taught Fine art in the St Petersburg Art School in Russia.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is holistic - I believe art is an expression of personal experience, and as such teaching technique is a means to an end rather than an end in itself. As an expression of a person's experience of life, art is also about beauty, and sharing the way that is perceived.

Personal Description:
I love history! I have been 'doing' history since I was 14, and it is something that encapsulates me into a whole different world. I have worked as a history teacher at a secondary school for 10 years, and have loved delving back into the past with the older and younger students alike. I studied and worked in archaeology before becoming a history teacher, and found working with real objects from the past was an amazing experience. More recently, I have reignited my love of English too, especially with regards to theatre and plays. Being close to London enables me to visit the West End as much as I can, and immerse myself in the amazing culture of Language and drama.

At home, I am mum to a 7 year old daughter, and 5 year old son, a cat and a dog. We keep ourselves busy being outdoors as much as possible and are totally hooked on camping! We enjoy the freedom it allows and the back-to-basics feeling. Plus the kids love getting muddy and staying up after dark, so camping allows for total liberation! My daughter has got the theatre bug too, and together we enjoy live performances as much as we can.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History at KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level for 13 years. For four of those years I was Head of Department, responsible for issues such as curriculum, exams and monitoring student progress, so I am experienced in identifying areas of need for students and helping them to progress. I have been very successful with exam results, and have enjoyed guiding tutee's through their exam subjects.

I have very good knowledge of many of the exam boards and have been a marker for AQA and Edexcel GCSE History since 2014.
I am also a lead moderator for the A-Level Unit 4 coursework with Edexcel. I have substantial knowledge and understanding of what exam boards are looking for in responses to exam questions and coursework objectives.

I have been teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills in English to a wide range of people - adults and youth groups - since 2013, which has broadened my teaching spectrum, and provided me with new challenges in terms of my teaching. It is something that has been enjoyable and that I intend to continue.

I have been tutoring since Dec 2011, and really enjoy the change from class teaching. I have tutored a wide range of students with a wide range of needs, and have taught to all the exam boards. It is really rewarding to set up individual lessons and focus on exactly what is needed, knowing I can offer help and support to students. I like to be well prepared for individual lessons and to make the most of the time we have to improve techniques, subject knowledge and overall exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what really helps students to progress is an understanding of exam technique. Having knowledge of the subject is important, but knowing how to handle it and use it in an exam situation if key to gaining top grades. I like to adopt a friendly and approachable manner with students to encourage focus and progress. I will go through essays and exam questions to identify areas that could be improved, and suggest ways of improving the use of language to make the most of student's knowledge. Giving feedback for written work is imperative to aid progress and this will take a large role in my tutoring.

Personal Description:
I have a passion for Science and hope to go into laboratory research. I recently finished my Masters by Research in Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester, graduating with Distinction.
In June 2015 I finished my BSc in Biology from Imperial College London with First Class Honours. . My A level grades were A* A A in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (respectively). I am committed and enthusiastic in everything I do and I love new experiences and challenges.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 5 years and have had over a dozen students, ranging from 4-28 years of age.

In addition to my professional tutoring:
-In the lab I teach new practical techniques and knowledge to students and my peers
-I am training to become an assistant instructor in Women's Self Defence with the charity that I do martial arts with
-I have a younger sister whom I have helped with academia since she was a child, improving her knowledge and confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is something that I thoroughly enjoy. It makes me feel like I have made a difference when I am able to help someone better understand and apply something that, up until then, teachers or peers have failed to do.
A large part of my role as a tutor, particularly with younger students, is to improve their self-confidence, I give them additional knowledge, confidence to apply and convey it and confidence to ask questions.

I believe that the path to exam success involves three things:
-Thorough knowledge of subject material
-Exam technique (what to write/say to get the marks)
-On-the-day performance

I feel that my job as a tutor is to assess these points in my students and to help them with whatever stage they require to boost their performance.

YOUNGER STUDENTS: when tutoring children I find that it is important to continuously change the activity or topic every 5-10 minutes so that the student is engaged and gets the most out of the lessons. I have learned many of the techniques for tutoring children during my training and experience as a Young Scout Leader.
In my lessons I play games based on the material and use tools such as white boards, the feedback I receive is that my students really enjoy and look forward to our lessons.

SECONDARY LEVEL & OLDER STUDENTS: I feel it is important for my students to understand how the topic they are learning fits into the wider picture. Often I find that the reason my students struggled with some subject areas is that they were not taught the broader concepts or knowledge was assumed, this is particularly common with Chemistry. I aim to fill this gap so that students learn and understand the syllabus learning points as opposed to just memorizing them.
With Maths I go through many practice questions with my students. I set a question and we will work on it together or independently, then I will give the answer and show my working. My students find it very helpful that I work alongside them and provide them with a full solution including method, as opposed to just an answer.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced tutor, proof reader and trainee teacher. Academically, I received my degree from the University of Birmingham (BSc Environmental Science) in 2013 achieving a 2.1 classification. In 2014-15 I studied MSc Surveying and Land Environmental Management at the University of Exeter (Penryn campus).

I am well organised, efficient and take a friendly approach to tutoring - as well as being hard-working and easy to get along with, I am reliable and prefer my lessons to be enjoyable as well as informative.

My passion for cooking, combined with another passion of mine; travel, has enabled me to spend considerable time in numerous countries giving me first hand knowledge of different languages/cultures and business environments. So far I have been fortunate to visit New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, France, Spain, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, Sweden and I intend to visit many more.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently studying for my PGCE part-time - and working as a supply teacher in local Birmingham schools.

I have previous tutoring experience with both young people (under 18) and international students since 2011. I have been able to help my past two tutees from UKtutors to A's in Geography GCSE and A Level respectively.
I also completed a 4 week internship in a New Zealand grammar school in the summer of August/September 2012, allowing me to gain classroom experience as well as helping out more recently in a primary school in Finland, teaching English.

Meanwhile, I tutor/help out my younger brother who is 18 and studying for his A levels.

I also have my own 'proofreading' enterprise and I have helped foreign students with their conversational English skills since 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I take an informal approach but also ensure that sessions are structured well and tailored for each individual students' needs so every tutee is able to get the most from the session.

I am perfectly happy to re-arrange or cancel classes if necessary, I just ask to be notified at least 24 hours prior to the intended lesson.

Personal Description:
I am a native French speaker, born and educated in Paris, but I have been living in England for over 30 years and married an Englishman. I graduated from the Sorbonne University with a view to teaching English there but when I came to England as a French assistante. A year later, having completed my Master's degree I cam back to settle in England and soon qualified as a French teacher. I have been working in that capacity until 2012 when I retired from full-time teaching to dedicated myself to private tuition. I am thus very experienced at all levels consider myself an extremely dedicated teacher, eager to see the students progress and enjoy learning about French culture at the same time as they improve their command of the language. I believe that the most efficient way of learning other than total immersion is the one to one approach which has often allowed me to enable the students willing to invest the extra time to progress exponentially, get motivated and achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught French and English to adults (managerial staff and trainees) in the private sector, in small groups and individually.
Subsequently, I have taught French from KS3 to KS5, full-time on permanent contracts for nearly 30 years in total. At the same time I have tutored my own son to passing his French G.C.S.E. with the top mark in the country, and his French A Level with flying colours. As a result he is now reading French at Oxford University and he continues to call on my expertise whenever needed. A few years ago, one of my A Level students whom I tutored privately obtained the top marks in the country in every module of the Edexcel exam. I am extremely experienced in coaching students to success in their G.C.S.E. and A Level French exams and the overwhelming majority of my students systematically achieved their potential or better. For over 10 years I took on virtually all the A Level French teaching at my last school and have always acted as teacher-examiner for both G.C.S.E. and A Level..

Tutoring Approach:

First, I assess what each student is aiming to gain from the private tuition, whether it be coaching for written and/or oral examinations, building confidence in communicating within a given context, improving pronunciation, mastering the finer points of grammar, studying French literature etc. I also quickly evaluate the level and ability of individual student through gentle probing and questioning. I go on to prepare an appropriate programme of study and gather material such as PowerPoint presentations, tailor made practice exercises, Past Papers, relevant websites, use visual and aural aids to add interest. I set homework and can give feedback on line between lessons to maximise efficiency of personal contact time. Basically it all depends on what the student wishes to achieve.Because I know the subject so well I can be extremely flexible and can instantly fine tune my approach according to the need of my student at any given moment. Thanks to my long experience I have become extremely responsive to the all-important feedback

Personal Description:
I am a multi-instrumentalist originally from the Scottish Borders, playing flute, whistles and clarinet.
I specialise in folk and traditional music, mainly playing Scottish, Irish, Manx, Northumbrian and Breton. I studied at Newcastle University on the Folk and Traditional Music degree and gained a 2.1 overall grade with a 1st in performance in 2013. As well as working for Live Music Now, teaching privately and teaching at the Sage Gateshead I perform in a few different bands.

Projects and Employment

Performer and workshop leader for Live Music Now
As a music leader on the Live Music Now scheme, I have extensive experience of performing and delivering workshops to those who may not have regular access to live music. Audiences include children with special educational needs, adults with learning disabilities, children in hospitals and elderly people living in sheltered accommodation. Due to the diverse range of audiences and performance settings my partner and I have to be very flexible and always ready to tailor our performance accordingly.

The Sage Gateshead, Adult learning, Ensemble leader for two
bands within the Folkworks Tuesday program.
I write, arrange and teach music to the Beginner and Intermediate Bands at Folkworks Tuesdays. These sessions are taught using a combination of learning by ear and reading notation.

Private Music Teacher.
I give one to one lessons to adults and children of any ability and consequently my teaching style is very flexible.

Performer and recording artist in various bands.

Freya Rae & Louis Bingham
A quote from our website:
Freya Rae & Louis Bingham's music is varied, colourful and enthralling. They are a young duo who play a mixture of traditional tunes and modern compositions, drawing particularly on strong influences from Ireland and Brittany. On stage their unique and engaging performance dynamic communicates to audiences their love and sensitivity for the tradition, whilst presenting their own innovative compositions with virtuosity
and creative flair. Multi-instrumentalists, Freya's whistles, flute and clarinet blend seamlessly with Louis' guitars, cittern and bouzouki. They have recently released their debut album Curlicue, a recording which has garnered significant critical acclaim.
"Beautifully arranged and played with an entirely convincing sensibility... this is exquisite musicianship' The Living Tradition

Birlinn Jiarg
Birlinn Jiarg was brought together by multi-instrumentalist Beccy Hurst to perform the traditional Manx music she grew up with as well as her own compositions. Having performed with various Manx bands and dance teams over the years, Beccy moved to England to study on the Folk Degree at Newcastle University.
At the centre of Birlinn Jiarg's sound is the combination of Beccy's whistle and concertina playing and the clarinet and flute of Freya Rae (Freya Rae and Louis Bingham, Tom Kitching Band). The unusual combination of low whistle and clarinet was what originally inspired the band's formation and sets Birlinn Jiarg's sound apart from more traditional line-ups. Having performed in a duo with Beccy for a few years, Scottish guitarist and bouzouki player Alasdair Paul ( Pons Aelius , Kimber/Paul) was a natural choice for Birlinn Jiarg. Completing the quartet's line-up is bodhránist Callum Younger (Pons Aelius, Trio FCT). Callum and Alasdair have
worked together on a variety of projects and their inventive and powerful accompaniment provides a great platform for Beccy's and Freya's melodic interplay.

Tom Kitching Band
I play flute and clarinet in Tom's band. We have completed two tours around England and are planning more in 2016.
"Interloper is challenging, dexterous and above all, thought-provoking" EFDSS Spring 2015

Simo Lagnawi (The Gnawa Berber)

I am a guest musician on Simo's album (Track 9, Sma) and I became really interested in improvisation during this project as it is a very important part of the Gnawa tradition. I improvise throughout the track and found it really beneficial for my playing and composition skills.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced performer and teacher who has graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Folk and Traditional Music

Teaching Experience:
Currently I teach a wide range of people from children as young as 6 to groups of adults at The Sage Gateshead, I am also a performer and workshop leader for Live Music Now

I can travel within Newcastle city for an extra £5

Tutoring Approach:

I am a flexible and friendly teacher who takes into consideration my pupils interests and needs and I create lessons that are suited to the individual.

Personal Description:
I am a native Arabic language tutor with over 20 years' experience teaching Arabic from absolute beginners to GCSE level in UK Colleges. I teach adults and children in person and through Skype.

I teach Arabic (Modern / Classical) from complete beginners level, all the way to an advanced level, for both adults and children. Students learn all aspects of the language: reading, writing and speaking (general communication). I apply modern teaching techniques, which make the learning process appealing and enjoyable at each lesson.

Teaching Experience:

I have a huge wealth of experience in teaching Arabic to Adults and Children in the UK over a period of nearly 25 years. I started teaching Arabic to children privately (individually and in small groups) in the UK since 1992. I then extended my offering, by teaching adults in one of the Adult Community Colleges in the North of England. I then moved to London, and taught two courses of Arabic at Brent Adult Education Services from 1999 to 2001. During that period, I also completed my basic teaching training at Stanmore College in1999.
I then moved to Sussex and restarted in 2008 my Arabic teaching at Sussex Adult Education Services. I continue to teach there until now, as I am the only Arabic Language Tutor at college. Besides that, I kept my private teaching to adults and children, either in person or through Skype.
My wealth of experience in teaching Arabic is manifested by the following:
1) I use a wide range and varied teaching materials: books; dialogues; MP3 sound files; card games; CDs; computer games; videos; and worksheets. All of these are at different levels - from absolute beginners to advanced learners. I have created and developed some of these materials, while I have carefully selected the others to suit my teaching at different levels.
2) I plan and develop suitable materials to teach individual students, according to their abilities and understanding. I don't just follow one or two text books, or a computer program to teach the language. I create a session plan for each individual lesson, and when I teach a small group of students, I use suitable differentiation methods to cover the different needs of the students. For example, I currently teach two young children (brothers) at different ages and one of them has a disability, so my teaching materials are different to suit each of them, in order to keep both of them enjoy and benefit from the lessons.
3) Teaching students with different abilities and backgrounds, as well as disabled students. For example, I taught a partially blind adult student, as part of a large group, and then individually. She enjoyed the lessons and continued learning Arabic. My students are at different ages; different professions; different backgrounds; and with different objectives to learn Arabic. I currently teach young children under 10 years old; a teenager at GCSE level; several male and female adults (different professions); and a retired lady. This is in addition to my teaching at college.
4) I also teach at different levels. For beginners, I teach them the Arabic letters (pronunciation and writing) and communication skills in different day-to-day topics such as buying food and asking for directions. For the more advanced adult learners, I prepare them to be able to read, listen and understand the news in Arabic as well as reading stories, and debating topics. This gives them a good foundation if they want to work in Arabic speaking countries; work with NGOs where Arabic is required; and conducting business in the Arab world.
5) As a College Tutor, I have gone through several inspections / observations of my teaching. I used the feedback from these inspections to improve my teaching methods, style and materials. The feedback from my last observation session (in October 2016) was excellent, and I got the highest grade for a teaching session. The inspection report was full of positive feedback statements, such as:

"The tutor has a very high level of subject knowledge and communicated this in a calm and reassuring manner throughout. There was good rapport between the tutor and students which created a very supportive environment";

"Delivery methods were varied and included tutor presentation, use of sound files, handouts, speaking practice with the tutor, pair-work and some students using ICT resources. Tutor spoke clearly and utilised facial expression to good effect to demonstrate subtle differences in long and short vowel sounds. The pace appeared to be appropriate to all and differentiated learning activities enabled students to progress at their own pace. There were frequent opportunities for repetition. Handouts were either dual language (English / Arabic) or dual script (Arabic script / Latin alphabet script)";

"A range of assessment methods were in evidence including Q&A, quiz sheets and individual conversation between student and tutor in target language. Positive verbal feedback was given by the tutor throughout the session.
The tutor was well aware of the differing starting points of the students and the tutor had devised an excellent range of individual activities concerning Arabic to meet the needs of each learner. (One had matching cards, 2 played snakes and ladders, one had activity on iPad and one an activity on the computer.)";

"All learners were confident to speak in target language during Q and A sessions";

"Very clear differentiation was evident as the range of students was quite wide including absolute beginners alongside at least one student who had some previous knowledge to the extent that he could read/recognise written Arabic".

Tutoring Approach:

I teach at my home in Haywards heath but can also travel to the student's home in Sussex and London (travel expenses to be discussed). I also teach via Skype, and have a good experience with this method (I taught last year an IGCSE student in the Middle East, and currently teach GCSE to two young persons, all via Skype). I usually offer a free initial 10 to 15 minute trial session for assessment purposes and to make sure the student is happy with teaching via Skype.
