Confidence is often the stumbling block for learners, and I always encourage all of my students to feel an early sense of achievement. Enabling students to see real progress quickly is essential to the building of self-esteem. I am very approachable and my style of teaching is relaxed and friendly. I love my job and hope that my own enthusiasm inspires my students to excel. Recently I have added French to my repertoire, for absolute beginners. Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher since 1976. I have taught all age groups, from nursery to A Level. Teaching is a wonderful and totally satisfying vocation. I moved across to tutoring as I felt I could offer all of my experience in this role. Being a teacher is definitely something I was born to do, and I love it.

Tutoring Approach:

Students can learn by either visiting my home or at a distance using Skype. Every student is assessed as an individual and the content of their course tailored to their needs. I test my students periodically to ensure progress is going smoothly; also testing is a good way for students to observe their own progress. We use a variety of materials: books for writing and reading in English, and for revision in Maths; the computer for visual skills and games, listening and speaking is a major part of the programme for EFL students. Children learn in different ways, and I like to offer my students visual, auditory and kinetic tools, we can see which is most comfortable for the individual. The speed of learning is not as important as the confidence of the individual and their inspiration and motivation to progress.

Personal Description:
After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I've never looked back!

I am also a freelance examiner for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) - examining is invaluable to my role as a science tutor and to the development of my students' abilities in preparation for their examinations. It has taught me to understand the very specific focus of each syllabus as a whole, to read for the specific aim of relevant text, and to concentrate not just on surface comprehension but to expand science beyond basic skills.

I have many hobbies but particularly enjoy outdoor pursuits including: sailing, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking and running. Most of my free time though is spent with my wonderful husband and beautiful tots!

Teaching Experience:

During my time researching at Oxford, I tutored an array of students in Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, Human Science and Medicine.

I am a twenty-one year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and understand the tricky bits of their material which is escaping their understanding. I am a Canadian studying abroad here in Glasgow and therefore do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have the equivalent levels from Canadian institutions with top marks. I tutor best in history, my chosen subject, English or French as a second language, and maths, which I not only did well in during secondary school, but all of which I have also studied at the University level. I have several years of teaching experience in different settings and with different age groups. I've taught English as a Second Language in a camp setting which ran lessons similar to classroom lessons every morning. I had to design my own approaches to various topics which gave me a lot of practice in making studying and learning interesting and easier for children who were less interested or struggling. I also tutored on a private basis for primary school-aged children through the medium of French and English in reading and writing skills as well as the general subjects at that age. I have tutored at the secondary school level in Maths, English, French, Sciences, and History. I have also been a teaching assistant at the University level for both Irish and Scottish Gaelic second language courses as well as a general Celtic World knowledge course.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning should be fun.
Aim is to help student learn how they understand instruction so that they are more confident in their own abilities and can perform better in the future.
Use past work to improve on future work.

Learning should be fun and I strive to make the tutoring experience less about school work and more about understanding the ways in which what is being taught is of interest to the student. Finding ways to improve the student's understanding and learning experience sometimes means approaching the material in a different way than is being taught in class. Teachers understand that not all student learn the same way but cannot always deliver their teaching in all these ways. By helping the student understand the material first and then explaining the method the teacher used to explain it first allows the student to reach their full potential, understand the material, and go back to class with a better chance following the teacher's instruction.

All of this is done in a light-mannered way that does not make the child feel as though tutoring is a punishment for not understanding in class, but rather, a (sometimes lengthy) temporary situation until the student becomes more confident about his or her own skills!

Using the student's own work is an important tool for helping them recognize their own areas of difficulty and should be used again as mock exams to help the student see tangible proof of their improvements. The best understanding of any subject comes from watching it being done/having it explained, doing it oneself, and then teaching it in turn.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic, creative and highly experienced teacher of English language and literature. I retired In 2014 from the full-time secondary school teaching post I held for 23 years, at an independent girls' school in Lincolnshire. I taught throughout the school, at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, and have a strong proven commitment to raising academic standards; my students have achieved consistently excellent GCSE and A Level grades. Although I have a particular passion for teaching literature, I am a rigorous teacher dedicated to raising standards of literacy through my teaching of English language, and to the educational and personal development of young people more widely, especially those in transition to higher education.

As well as teaching my academic subject, I was a sixth form personal tutor for 18 years, monitoring my students' academic progress, and guiding and mentoring those applying to university, assisting with UCAS applications and personal statements, or helping tutees plan for a gap year or for employment - a role which I found particularly fulfilling. I also have experience of teaching in further education and have been successful in teaching mature students from different cultural backgrounds.

For two years 2012-14 , I supervised sixth form students taking the AQA Extended Project Qualification. I greatly enjoy one - to-one tuition.

In a career spanning more than 40 years in all, I have built up extensive subject knowledge and teaching expertise, which I can adapt to students ranging from 11 years to adult.

Teaching Experience:

In my most recent post, which I held for 23 years until my recent retirement, I taught English Language and English Literature throughout the school: to pupils aged 11-14 at Key Stage 3, to pupils taking GCSE exams, and to sixth formers taking AS and A level English.
At GCSE and AS/A Level my pupils have obtained consistently excellent results. I have taught a very wide range of set texts for literature and have taught courses by different exam boards, such as Edexcel, and OCR, and the CIE IGCSE.

My teaching has often involved one-to-one sessions with pupils who need extra support and I have taught those whose attainment in the subject is modest, as well as higher achievers in English.

My teaching experience prior to this included teaching for a total of 7 years full and part-time in further education colleges, and I have also taught English as a foreign language for the British Council.

I have been tutoring privately since retiring from full time school teaching, and I currently tutor students ranging from 15 to 21, assisting with preparation for GCSE exams, A Levels, and at university level. I have been tutoring students following a range of different GCSE courses and examining boards, including Edexcel IGCSE, Cambridge IGCSE, and AQA GCSE courses, both language and literature qualifications, and also the Edexcel combined A Level Language and Literature. My tutoring role includes assisting my tutees with revision of a wide range of set texts, demonstrating my adaptability and expertise in quickly grasping what different exam techniques are required. My private tutees gained English language and literature grades that exceeded their school teachers' expectations in the summer 2015 round of GCSE exams, achieving grades ranging from C (D predicted) to A* (B predicted). In summer 2016, again, my private tutees achieved good grades at least one grade higher than predicted at school and have been able to continue to the next stage of their studies, including university entrance.

My approach to tutoring is a natural continuation of my approach as a classroom teacher. I am passionate about my subject and prepare lessons thoroughly and imaginatively. I begin by making sure I am fully in the picture with regard to the specific course being followed and the exam criteria, and use the exam boards' websites to source relevant materials such as past papers and teaching resources.

I always have a clear lesson plan and realistic aim of what I wish to achieve in the time available. I like people and I am a friendly, outgoing person who will communicate successfully with a tutee; I enjoy the company of young people and am experienced in putting my tutees at their ease and building their confidence, which I believe is very important. I form productive relationships with those I teach and am good at listening to them and assessing their needs, and adjusting my teaching strategy accordingly.

As well as preparing thoroughly, I mark work meticulously and give very detailed and helpful feedback, both in writing and orally. I set relevant work to be completed for the next tutorial, and monitor progress closely; I stay in regular contact with my students and/or their parents via email and phone.

I am a hardworking and sympathetic tutor with the interests of my tutees at heart; my aim is to help them achieve their full potential and gain exam success.

i prefer to tutor in my own home where I am set up to receive my tutees in a quiet environment designed to maximise academic concentration. I do not tutor on Fridays or at weekends. I am usually able to tutor in school holidays, when I can offer longer, more intensive revision sessions.

Some tutees opt for longer sessions fortnightly , rather than one hour weekly. My fees for longer sessions for GCSE and A Level students are 60 for an hour and a half, and 75 for a two hour tutorial, representing a small reduction on the hourly fee of 45. During A-Levels I constantly attended 'King's Factor' through King's College London. Where we logically analyse and solve STEP and MAT questions. This programme gave me the chance to improve my problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst working as a tutor, I discovered that teaching is not just about the kid being able to memorise the content, equations and even techniques, but also being able to understand them fully and able to apply them at any problem they may come across with.

Hence, for me as a tutor, I make sure that the student understands the knowledge behind the equations they use to solve a certain problem. So in the future they will also know the logic behind a logic.

Because for me, Mathematics is not just about being able to know the answer, its also about the steps, techniques and knowledge used in attaining the correct answer.

As a professional writer with a range of credits in tv and radio (Eastenders, Holby City, The Bill), I gained experience of working with schools and colleges to develop the literacy skills of learners of all ages. Perhaps uniquely, I am also a fully-qualified Maths teacher equipped with the subject knowledge to teach to A-level. Aside from Maths and English, I occasionally teach guitar and ukelele and play in a couple of local bands. Though there is no escaping hard work, I think learning should be fun.
