Personal Description:
My name is Tim and I'm based in the Caerphilly area. I am happy to work anywhere in Caerphilly, Cardiff, Newport or the Valleys. I am a primary school teacher and have 24 years experience working with children within the age range 6-11.
I have worked in London and in South Wales and have taught in a range of primary schools, teaching children from many different types of background. I have a current CRB check and can provide excellent references.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a primary school teacher since 1986 and have worked across the age range from 6 to 11. I have a good deal of experience teaching children in Year 6 and preparing them for the step up to secondary school. I am able to give tuition in any primary subject but have a specialism in maths as I have been maths co-ordinator in more than one school and have an in depth knowledge of how children learn in this subject and how they can be helped to enjoy their work here and achieve good results. I also have experience of tutoring children in individual sessions and have always been able to help them to improve their standards and become more confident across the curriculum.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very friendly tutor who has always been able to establish a good rapport with children of primary age. I am extremely patient and calm in my approach as a teacher and believe in using humour to help children relax and enjoy learning. I take into account the preferred learning style of the child and tailor all lessons to their needs. I will try to include an element of challenge in all sessions to help children build up their confidence through success on progressively more difficult tasks. I have a huge range of resources I can use to help make sessions interesting and am prepared to be flexible in terms of rates, location of sessions and times.

Personal Description:
Having been born in London I am a native speaker of the English language. I have vast experience with speakers of other languages. I recently decided to make a career change and make teaching English to speakers of other language a professional career. I am CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualified. I am also two years into BA (hons) English Language and Literature degree and intend to continue my own personal development by studying for an MA English Language Teaching and Linguistics and by completing the DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as soon as I am eligible.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught to classes of between six and eighteen students whilst training for the CELTA qualification. The students came from a variety of countries including: France, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Russia and Poland. I have taught many more personal one-to-one lessons, mainly within the South American community.

Tutoring Approach:

I use a number of different course books for teaching English and try to make the whole experience as relaxed, fun and interactive as possible. This is easier with larger numbers but can be achieved on a one-to-one basis with a little thought and effort. I use audio and visual materials. Each student will have a preferred method of learning and as individuals we are not usually aware of what type of learner we are, for this reason I employ a number of techniques to make the learning experience as beneficial as possible. The techniques I use are: linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, bodily-kinaesthetic, musical, inter-personal and intra-personal.

Personal Description:
In July 2013, I graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, undertaking a BMus (Hons) Music degree (2.1) with a principle study in singing (1st). I took two gap years before going to university to gain experience in the music and drama fields. I have studied modules at university ranging from Bach to Beethoven and Sibelius to Weill.

Teaching Experience:

In my two gap years I was a gap student at Bedales Schools for a term and then was invited back to cover a member of music staff. Responsibilities included teaching 8-13 year old mixed pupils classroom music as well as supervising music practices. I also tutored pupils through grade 5 theory achieving merit and distinction grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very laid-back attitude to teaching and will teach you in similar ways that I have been taught. I understand totally that some pupils need several ways of explaining things so bring a variety of teaching methods to my lessons. I make teaching interesting and engaging and always try to relate the subject to the pupil. I have been very fortunate to learn under some inspirational teachers and would love to be able to carry on their enthusiasm to other students.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying for a post graduate certificate in education, specialising Science teaching at Oxford University. I graduated with a 2:1 in Physics at Oxford last year. I thoroughly enjoy learning and teaching alike and I feel I have combined that love in my future career as a Science teacher.
Due to my studies, I am in England for the majority of the year but live in Northern Ireland all Christmas, Easter and the months of July and August.

Teaching Experience:

I was involved in the tutor scheme at Ballyclare High School when I attended, where I worked with 1st to 3rd years with their science and maths.
I have been working with UK tutors for over a year and already helped numerous pupils across secondary school age.
I was awarded the Scott Prize for Teaching Physics in Schools when I took it as one of my options during my degree.
I am currently studying for my PGCE at Oxford University and have had teaching placements at North Oxfordshire Academy and Cheney School. I am due to start a teaching job in September at Wren Academy, Finchley.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly and patient tutor. I find the more enjoyable a subject is the easier it is to remember. I find working through questions is the best way to apply knowledge.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
I have lived in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom since December 2009. I am originally from Kumamoto, where I completed a training course at the EII Japanese Language Centre. I have now been teaching Japanese to students of all levels for nearly ten years.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching Japanese in Kumamoto, Japan 10 years ago. I teach both children and adults and from absolute beginners to advanced level students. After moving to England I've been teaching from my home.

I also have 8 years experience of teaching online using Skype and an interactive whiteboard for students all over the world. I have worked for a major Japanese online school for 2 years.

I have taught students who aim to take the JLPT exam, the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (from the1st to 5th grade), and who are studying for The Duke of Edinburgh award.

I have also helped business people who are planning to work for Japanese companies.

My lesson fees are as follows:

Face-to-face lessons

Private Lessons : 25 for a one hour individual lesson (at my home)

Group Lessons
2 people : 20 per person for a one hour lesson (at my home)
3 or more people : Please enquire about availability (at a public venue)
3 people : 18 per person for a one hour lesson
4-5 people : 15 per person for a one hour lesson
6-8 people : 13 per person for a one hour lesson

You can take group lessons with your friends or family members. Discounted lesson rates are available if you can collect a group of between 2 and 8 people.

Online lessons

Private lessons :
20 for a 50 minute individual lesson
25 for a 60 minute individual lesson

Group Lessons
2 people : 18 per person for a 50 minute lesson / 20 per person for a 60 minute lesson
3-5 people : 15 per person for a 50 minute lesson / 17 per person for a 60 minute lesson
6-8 people : 13 per person for a 50 minute lesson / 15 per person for a 60 minute lesson

Tutoring Approach:

I begin by introducing essential sentence patterns and teaching how to use them in practise conversations. I use role-play to make the conversations real and teach how to speak Japanese naturally. You will soon realise my lessons are completely different from normal language studies at school and find that my method is both practical and effective.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Francis. I am a 28-year-old native English speaker based in Colchester. I hold a Joint Honours English Literature & History degree from York St John University. In 2003 the only A grade I received at GCSE level was in French. Between 2012 and 2014 I studied optional Mandarin and Spanish at university, having rekindled my own interest in, and talent for, language learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous experience teaching English to both children and adults in Wuhan, China, during my time there.

Tutoring Approach:

As I have mentioned, learning foreign languages is both an interest and a talent of mine. However, I am equally interested in teaching my own first language to those who wish to learn it; the English language, both written and spoken, is a rich cultural tapestry going back into ancient times, and a functioning knowledge of it is a worthy addition to anybody's CV. I believe that encouragement and positive reinforcement are the key to success in any endeavour, and accordingly I hope you will find me to be a friendly, positive, encouraging and patient tutor.

I am hoping to work with anyone who wishes to improve their English skills. I can help you improve your grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary or conversational skills, and I can also teach you some things about British culture and history if you wish; while learning a language is important, it is also necessary to know a certain amount of background about the place where it is spoken. It does not matter if you are not yet fluent - what's most important is that you are willing to learn, and will enjoy doing so. I aim to put the student first, and with this in mind we will discuss and then tackle subject matter appropriate to your age, ability, personal interests, and study aims.

Personal Description:
I'm a highly motivated and passionate editor with over five years' experience in copywriting, editorial and publishing. I recently trained to become an English Language Teacher and gained the Cambridge English Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA).

I currently work as a freelance editor and writer and offer private tutoring for foreign language learners. If you wish to learn or improve your English, then please get in touch. My hourly rate is reasonable and my hours are flexible. I can either host the sessions or come to you.

Teaching Experience:

I completed 120 hours of a full-time teacher training course leading to the Cambridge English Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from 5-30th September 2016. The course was of an extremely practical nature and included six hours of supervised and assessed teaching practice on groups of adult foreign students. The course also included work on teaching methodology and techniques, and phonology.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is personable, supportive and encouraging. Before the tutoring sessions begin, I will carry out an initial consultation, which will enable me to gage the student's level (e.g. elementary, intermediate), as well as their reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities. It's also important that I understand the student's motivations for learning English.

During the tutoring sessions, we'll cover the basics of English grammar (depending on level) and practise the grammar and vocabulary using real-life activities, such as, writing an email; listening to conversations; speaking and reading authentic materials (e.g.magazine articles, emails...)

I'll use a number of effective teaching techniques for practising and checking language, and work hard to make my clarification of meaning effective. I believe in student-centred lessons and respond to students' needs, correcting errors appropriately.

~ Testimonials ~
"Natalie is a positive and enthusiastic teacher who has demonstrated a lot of ability in the classroom".
"Natalie has an excellent rapport with learners and responds well to their needs".
"Throughout the course, Natalie displayed a friendly and supportive manner with her students and was able to establish and maintain a positive learning environment".

Personal Description:
Does your child needs 1-1 support with English or Maths?
Is your child struggling to keep up with school-work, homework or the demands of GCSE?

I can offer 1-1 support in a comfortable learning environment from an inspirational, patient and friendly trainee teacher who has taught whole classes and taught children 1-1 in schools and tutored GCSE Maths privately over the last 4 years.

Teaching Experience:

I spent two years partaking in work experience working across KS1 and KS2 to work towards my degree. As part of my degree I have taught KS1 and KS2 classes and individual children in 1-1 interventions. Also, I privately have tutored before to good success for a young girl working towards her GCSE Maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very intuitive to the learning styles of all children. I like to spend some time getting to know a child and how they learn so as when working with them, I can work on their individual strengths to develop their understanding of different subjects.
