Personal Description:
I am a native of Italy who has lived in the UK for 22 years and has well adapted to the British system of education, still bringing in some of the flavour of her own mother country in connection with love and curiosity for languages, cultures, and contacts with people and their cultures through the activity of teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been in the field of teaching languages (Italian being my special subject) for 21 years and have taught for all these years at all levels: children, GCSE, Highers level, University level, and adult classes both vocational and leasure/tourist.
My qualifications include a ESOL-Celta (Univ. of Cambridge) in teaching English as a Foreign Language to children and adults; a degree in English language and literature, as well as French language and literature; a PhD in Italian Studies. I have had mostly experience of teaching at University level in both language and culture (literature and cinema) in the last 10 years where my teaching ranges from beginners through to advanced level of Italian Language; and all levels of culture tutoring; translation studies.

Tutoring Approach:

Approach to tutoring varies from objective to objective.
Language in my opinion should be taught in a full immersion style, especially when it is targeting groups of people who are doing it for either vocational or personal reasons.
Tutoring of subjects such as languages with an objective such as GCSE or Highers or indeed University exams must take into account the syllabus that students must complete in order to reach their target: i.e. pass exams and, at the same time, learn in an effective though 'unforgettable' way. The majority of classes must be delivered in the target language, however in order to meet timing of syllabus coverage and exams some of the concept must be strengthened in the student's language.
In an ideal world, where no exams or timed targets exist, then tutoring of a language should happen 100% in the target language.

Personal Description:
I am an Economics graduate from Liverpool University and taught economics and business studies in secondary schools for over 10 years. Prior to teaching I worked in advertising for 10 years. I now focus on tutoring economics and business studies students and I also own two online businesses. I live in Bristol, am married with 3 children and I am passionate about helping young people achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

I taught Economics and Business Studies in state schools for 10 years and have also tutored students for many years. My students consistently over-perform - all students I tutored in 2015 achieved at least a grade B and improved at least one grade since I started working with them. Several improved by 3 or more grades. For example, one recent A2 Economics student went from a grade E in his January mock exam to an A* overall in June, whilst another A2 student went from a grade B to a grade A overall and achieved 100% on an AS resit paper. I am an experienced Economics examiner and am familiar with all the major exam boards. I can supply references on request (some are listed on my profile) and I have a current CRB.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always begin by discussing my tutee's individual requirements and areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. Once these have been established, I usually start with a return to basics, teaching economic or business theory that may not have been fully understood by the student. Once they are comfortable with the concepts, I will look to build in higher order analytical and evaluation skills as well as providing real world examples. I will use a variety of teaching methods to stretch students, backed up with exam technique by practising past papers. I am happy to teach face to face for local students, however I often teach online via Skype, using a whiteboard facility, which my students can also access. This makes the sessions as interactive as meeting face to face and it also means I can tutor students who don't live in Bristol. I always encourage students to provide feedback so that they receive maximum benefit from their teaching.

Below are some testimonials from current and recent students:

''I really cannot overstate the amount Ian has helped me out with my AQA Economics A-level with AQA. After missing the most part of an entire term of Economics teaching at my school essentially all of my Economics knowledge came from Ian for my A2 exams. I had originally achieved a C-grade in AS Economics, but after Ian teaching me for only two school terms I was able to achieve two A's at 174/200 UMS in my A2 exams (the criteria for earning an A* at A-level being 180/200 UMS). This would have been unachievable without Ian's help. One particularly useful tool for learning with Ian was our Skype sessions (around 70% of our lesson time was done using this method). These were online lessons in which our communication was done via Skype, using the "Google Docs" tool as a way of sharing work and information between us. This was particularly useful to me as my schedule was always busy and being able to be tutored online made me able to make every lesson without feeling overworked or having to travel. Alongside this, these sessions meant I was able to do work and get real-time feedback on my exam answers at the same time. My answers could be questioned and improved with input from both myself and Ian. Overall taking in this information improved my exam technique considerably and played a large part in me obtaining such successful grades. Ian helped me hugely with my A-levels and I genuinely believe I would have performed at a level lower than a C without his tutoring. I would very much recommend him as a tutor to anyone looking for Economics help. He was able to assist with knowledge, theory and exam technique while using relevant, memorable and up-to-date examples that made the most out of our time and helped towards my exams.'' Mr C - Bristol

"Matt only got an E grade in his February A2 mock exam and the school predicted he would get a C grade at A2. With the significant assistance from Ian, Matt achieved an A* at A2. In his other two A levels, Matt achieved Bs (he also had tutors for these). There are several reasons why Ian made the difference: 1.Being taught on Skype. Matt was initially very apprehensive about being taught on Skype rather than in person. But Skype proved really beneficial. Firstly it enabled Matt to fit in tuition at times that would just not have been possible if travel had been involved. Secondly it enabled Matt to have additional lessons when he had spare time. 2. Focussing on how to structure essay answers. The school just didn't put anywhere near enough emphasis on this crucial area. 3. Essay marking. A key aspect of A2 is exam practice. We paid Ian for essay marking which meant that Matt was effectively maximising his time with Ian. 4. Not accepting mediocrity. The school said that Matt should not retake his AS exams as he had a good B grade. Ian said he should retake as he could do better. 5. Providing positive encouragement. Matt has always lacked belief in himself and Ian gave Matt the confidence that he could achieve a good result.
We would strongly recommend Ian as an Economics tutor" Mr P - South Gloucestershire

"Ian is an incredible tutor, who can prepare you not only for the Economics lessons, but also for the A levels exam. Before came to him, I struggled to understand Economics and was predicted a C. However, Ian helped me to understand all the economic concepts and theories, using up to date examples and YouTube videos and I achieved a grade A at AS level. Half of the lessons I had were via Skype since I was abroad that time. That's why I would especially recommend Ian for those students, who don't have the opportunity to come to his home. On the whole Ian is a brilliant Economics teacher, who will definitely help you to succeed in the subject" Miss B - Bristol and Russia

"Ian is a friendly and helpful tutor. He is punctual for his lessons and flexible with his timings. My son retook his EC2 paper in January 2013 and secured 100% after getting tutored from Ian. This is an improvement from a grade B prior to Ian's tutoring. Ian helped my son tremendously in his exam technique and boosted my son's confidence in the subject and the ways to approach his exams. My son was able to achieve 100% only because of Ian's teaching and from his dedicated effort. I would easily recommend Ian to anyone needing a tutor." Mrs D - Swansea

"Ian started tutoring me in late September and since then my Economics results have improved and I achieved an A grade in my final A2 exams. I have found Ian a very helpful tutor who is more than willing to go through my questions. We go through essays and past paper questions which aid my understanding and confidence in Economics topics. Ian taught me online and I found that Skype was highly convenient in allowing me to not have to travel to Ian" Mr B - Chepstow

"I contacted Ian since I felt that I needed help in understanding the context and concepts involved. Ian style of working was particularly effective. He helped me to improve my understanding of the subject matter by logical explanation and by building from basic principles to a more sophisticated awareness of the subject. Ian was always very patient and sympathetic to my learning needs. He was well prepared for our sessions, and always set me work to do independently as well. As a result of Ian's support I feel that my capability in Economics increased significantly. When I started working with Ian I was achieving at around a grade C. As a result of Ian's support I achieved an overall grade B at AS, the actual grades for the 2 papers were an A and a B. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Ian and would happily recommend Ian as a tutor for Economics. I will be continuing to have him as a tutor through my A2 course" Miss B - Redland, Bristol

"My son initially struggled with the subject gaining an E grade in his mock exams but with Ian's help he managed a grade B in his AS level and attained an A grade in both A2 papers. This was a huge improvement over the two years and I doubt it would have been possible without Ian's help, both with weekly tutoring and the all important pre exam revision days. Ian's approach was personalised and intensive and my son's needs we're concentrated upon fully. Ian was always punctual and organised and struck up a good relationship with the whole family. I would happily recommend him." Mrs W - Redland, Bristol

Personal Description:
I am sixty-six years of age and have retired after working as a Maths teacher since 1973. I was head of a Maths faculty in a large secondary school for over twenty years. I have a wide experience of preparing students for Mathematics examinations at all levels and have been an examiner throughout my career, working at different times for Edexcel, AQA, OCR, CIE and the IB.

Last summer, I was marking Further Pure 1, Statistics and Mechanics A-level modules as well as the IB HL Mathematics and Statistics module.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at secondary schools in Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Walsall. Since retiring from full-time employment, I have worked part-time at an A-level college and as a Maths consultant assisting GCSE students in Walsall in their attempts to achieve the all important grade C pass. I currently help a number of private tutees in either a one-to-one situation or in small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

Generally, I would say my approach to tutoring is traditional. The exact program of study depends on the needs of the tutee and can vary from a structured programme of study over a number of months to cramming for examinations which might just be a short course of two or three lessons.

I have a proven record of success and can provide testimonials if required.

Areas covered: Dudley, Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Sandwell

CRB certificate available for inspection.

I am an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who is passionate about science, specifically biological sciences, and keen to pass on my enthusiasm to my students. I am an outgoing and active person and enjoy spending my free time outdoors.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout the 5 years I have been teaching in secondary schools and colleges I have taught a range of subjects and specifications to a wide age range from 11 to adults of different abilities. Subjects taught include General science (biology, chemistry and physics), GCSE science, iGCSE biology, A level and IB biology, A level science and society, BTEC Applied Science. I have 2 years experience of 1:1 tuition covering the above subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I use our first session to get to know each other and identify your areas of strength and areas that you need particular help with. I try to plan creative and enjoyable lessons which allow us to openly discuss the concepts covered and aim to establish a relaxed atmosphere where you feel happy to ask any questions. In addition to covering the content I also ensure there are opportunities to practice exam style questions and exam skills so you feel fully prepared for the exam(s).

Personal Description:
I have graduated in Biomedical Sciences from University College London (UCL) with a first class honours. I have obtained excellent grades throughout my education and received several awards for my academic success.
I am currently undertaking a PhD focusing on the immune system.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a mentor for first year university students to help them settle into student life and guide them through their initial year and help solve any problems they may face.

I have also been a tutor for A-level students at UCL Academy where I supported students with their academia and also provided advice regarding university applications.

More recently, I have supervised undergraduate students during my PhD career where I assisted in both the practical and theoretical aspects of science.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe practice makes perfect, and this is the approach I have taken which has resulted in my success.
I would normally teach the concept making sure the student is aware what is being asked and what is being tested. Once the theory has been taught and understood, I would then test this with example questions. After reviewing the answers I would return back to theory to help understand any mistakes made.

I also understand different individuals work in different ways therefore I tailor my approach depending on the tutee.

If you would like further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Personal Description:
I would describe myself as easy-going, friendly and caring. I love cooking and food in general, so am working for a nutrition company and charity in London at the moment. I enjoy being active and will try my hand at any sport. I love travelling and meeting new people.

Teaching Experience:

In the past two years I have been tutoring GCSE (year 1) and AS-level AQA Biology. I am now also tutoring GCSE (year 2). I adapt my sessions to the students' areas of concern. I work closely with the specification as this outlines the topics the students are expected to learn and is the guideline for exam questions. I have also worked with primary-school children to increase their reading age in schools around Leeds, which has been very rewarding as you see the children progress.

Tutoring Approach:

I am passionate and enthusiastic about my subjects and love seeing others get passionate about it too. I have experienced poor teaching and know how frustrating it can be, I do my best to approach new concepts from different angles. I feel patience is important on both sides.

Personal Description:
I want to motivate and empower my pupils to help them become the best that they can be. I have spent the last five years working in various financial analysis roles across London and this has often involved giving 1-1 sessions on new processes and software. I have most enjoyed any opportunities I have had to help others achieve their goals.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring University students and adults in business subjects and Microsoft Excel for the past four years whilst working in Finance. Prior experience has also included children of ages 5-12 in groups and 1-1 tutoring at ages: 5-8 (for Maths and English) and 10 (for 11+ exams).

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my tuition largely to the needs of the student, depending on their requirements and working style. However, while tutoring to any required curricula I will also try to instil the love of a subject into a student by guiding them to other fascinating areas of the subject and discovering areas of interests to support the subject's framework.

Personal Description:
I am an English teacher of thirteen years' experience who holds degrees from the universities of Sussex, London and Kent, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education. In addition to teaching, I am an active researcher and academic writer, with specialisms in modernist literature, 19th-century realism, and existentialist philosophy. I write regular online articles on George Orwell, the subject of my thesis, and am currently seeking publication of my first book, which explores existentialist motifs in his writing. As well as English, I offer tuition in essay writing, and all branches of philosophy. Although I conduct the majority of lessons from my home or over Skype, I do travel to tutees in the Horsham and Dorking areas. Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you wish to discess the options available.

Teaching Experience:

I have thirteen years' experience as an educator, having taught English in an outstanding secondary school since 2003. During that time, I have helped thousands of pupils spanning the full range of abilities, and have consistently achieved exceptional 'value-added' results for my classes. In addition to working with larger groups, I have also offered regular one-to-one tuition sessions, and I take pride in never having had a pupil achieve lower than a C for GCSE English or English Literature. Indeed, the vast majority of my students achieve As and A*s, irrespective of their level of attainment when they first arrive under my supervision. My teaching has been repeatedly graded as 'outstanding', and the bespoke resources I produce in order to support students are of a professional quality.

Tutoring Approach:

As a doctoral tutor, I offer a premium service, drawing upon my own extensive academic skills and experience to give help that is tailored to the student's specific needs. I make a point of adapting not only the content, but also my teaching method to fit the learning style and personality of the individual, avoiding a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. The tutorials I offer are friendly and supportive, with a real emphasis placed upon aspiration: I want my students to aim for - and achieve - the highest possible grades. I have many years' experience setting and marking English coursework, particularly for AQA, and draw upon this to quickly identify areas for improvement in a student's work. My tutorials are designed to not only convey information clearly and in an easily-digestible form, but to provide structured opportunities for the learner to incrementally improve their skills. In addition to the lesson, I provide free email support to parents of my tutees, drawing upon my experience as a teacher to answer any queries relating to schoolwork or examinations. I offer a 50 percent discount on the first lesson, and reduced rates for groups of two or more students. Please email me to book a slot, or for a friendly discussion of your requirements.

Personal Description:
I am currently training to be a doctor at the University of Manchester. Before embarking on my current endeavour, I completed a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry, graduating with a 1st class (I graduated 3rd in the year group).

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of presenting information to others during my degree, which involved presenting complex scientific information in a simple and succinct manner.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in thorough preparation so I am happy to be sent material/questions that I can review before each session. I believe tuition is the foundation for better study so I aim to read around the topics that I teach in order to be ready to help the student apply their knowledge to academic problems and real-life situations. Getting the highest grade possible involves mastering topics that are difficult which is where I can help. I aim to make learning interesting while helping the tutee get to grips with challenging topics such as hydrogen NMR, redox reactions, Born-Haber cycles, organic reaction mechanisms and pH/pKa calculations, to name a few.

I continue to study chemistry informally in order to keep my knowledge up to date. Currently, I am studying the commercial applications of inorganic chemistry. I have extensive experience in studying all the major branches of chemistry: physical, organic and inorganic chemistry.

Personal Description:
I am a first-year Economics and Management student at Loughborough University, Leicestershire. I have completed both Spanish and French A-Levels achieving A*'s in both subjects. I have experience preparing students for GCSEs and A-levels exams, and I have successfully worked with students of all ages and abilities.

I am also willing to teach via Skype for those who don't live nearby.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working for the past three years with adults and children, both here in the UK and abroad. In the last year, I have also tried to tutor people all over the United Kingdom via Skype.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor all of my lessons to the individual needs of my student and use resources that are best suited to the way they learn. I also believe that languages are a truly enjoyable subject, and I always make sure that my students enjoy their lessons - I am also fully familiar with new and old GCSE and A Level MFL specs which is useful for those starting these courses this year.
