• developing speaking and seminar skills, useful for active participation in discussions and debates in the classroom and outside
• interpreting numerical, statistical and financial data orally and in writing
• demonstrating a clear understanding of what constitutes plagiarism and how to use the Harvard Referencing system for citation and the production of Reference Lists

At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I have had very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Personal Description:
I'm a personable, down-to-earth UCL master's graduate and qualified English teacher with experience in securing good outcomes. Those outcomes often include students' target grades, but considering the versatility of my subject - in constructing arguments, self-presentation, interview technique, and so on - I also emphasise the broad, contextualised relevance of what I teach. It's not just about the grades, it's also about the doors those grades might open and how best to equip students to walk through them.

I hugely enjoy the sheer stimulation and engagement which great literature brings and hope to inspire my students with that same passion.

Teaching Experience:

I began tutoring in 2008 through a university programme, and since then have worked with schools, private clients, abroad, and as a schoolteacher. My students have come from virtually every background and ability level. I have also taught since 2012 in various contexts including abroad and at home in schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Fundamentally, I take the mystery out of English. Whether it be essay structure, metaphor, politics or themes, I explain the subject in down-to-earth and practical terms, while always encouraging my students to expand their horizons and think about the world in which they live. My depth of learning in English at one of the world's premier centres for it, UCL, ensures I can meet any challenge you or your child may have.

I cannot teach English all in one go; like all languages, it must be learnt through years of immersion. Therefore, I ask that students work hard on their own, as well as with me, by reading regularly for pleasure and consuming other media in English as well. What I can do is refine your understanding of it and give you tips and tricks to get through those difficult exams.

I work very closely to the curriculum and have an unlimited use of resources for English, Maths and Science at Key Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4 (GCSE). I implement a variety of timed activities to monitor progress and establish focus points. Personal Description:
I am in my fifties and I have four grown up sons.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 20 years experience as a teacher and I am also a Dyslexia Specialist. I Can diagnose and support students with Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia, as well as Dyslexia. I have had a lot of success working with children and adults who have difficulty reading. I can help children increase their reading age, learn to spell, use punctuation and grammar, correctly and effectively. I can teach at primary, secondary and further education levels, and I have a great deal of experience working with adults who are struggling with basic skills in English and Maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very patient and supportive teacher. I believe in giving praise and encouragement to all my students to build their confidence and self esteem. I will assess their learning needs and design an individual learning plan for them. Learning should be fun, so I constantly look for new innovative methods of teaching which I can use with my students. I also respect student's privacy and will not discuss details of anyone I am working with.

Personal Description:
I'm a qualified teacher with experience in tutoring students from GCSE to undergraduate level. I received a Physics degree from Cardiff University, before getting married and moving to Sheffield to do my teacher training and a PhD.

Throughout this time I have been involved in teaching and tutoring, whether more formally in schools and at Sheffield University, or more informal private tuition to GCSE students and an engineering undergraduate.

My teaching seeks to develop understanding, whilst being enjoyable, and generally includes practical activities as well as written and oral work. In this respect I have spent many sessions in primary schools, secondary schools and public spaces (including the Winter Gardens, Sheffield) doing public Science teaching, demonstrations and promotions. This has helped me learn how to help everyone understand various aspects of Maths and Science, regardless of background or age.

Outside of teaching and tutoring I enjoy cycling and getting out into the Peak district.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst completing my teacher training I taught students from 12-18 and across the ability spectrum in all three Sciences.

Since then I have been involved in delivering tutorials and lectures at Sheffield University to undergraduate students in Physics and Maths. During this time I have privately tutored both undergraduate and GCSE students.

Tutoring Approach:

I vary my approach to tutoring depending on the needs, ability and age of the student, but in all cases I'm patient, friendly and encouraging.

When there is sufficient time, students are encouraged to complete some diagnostic work to establish both their ability and confidence across the curriculum. This allows the tutorials to be planned appropriately for each specific student.

Just before the exam, exam technique help and troubleshooting can make a significant difference to the students performance and confidence, even with just one or two sessions.

Personal Description:
I have been teaching Latin in primary schools for two years as part of the 'Iris Project' which is designed to improve children's literacy through Latin. I have also been involved with a project called 'Ancient Languages in the Park' which teaches a variety of languages in open surroundings. Both these teaching experiences offer unique insights into teaching.

For my undergraduate degree I majored in Latin. As part of that degree I took a module specifically designed for Latin teachers. I have studied a variety of different teaching methods and I am passionate about finding the correct teaching approach for each individual student.

Tutoring Approach:

OFFERED APPROACHES

Each student learns differently and as such I offer a selection of approaches so that each student can get the most from their learning experience. Students can either decide how they want to learn or, through a free consultation, let me offer a suggestion depending on their goals and learning type.

Direct Approach

The direct approach is a grammar heavy approach which was commonly used until around 40 years ago when it fell out of fashion. This approach is once again making a comeback, especially since many native English speakers no longer know correct grammar.

In this approach you learn Latin through its grammar system whilst learning a great deal of English along the way. This method can be excellent for anyone who is still engaged in any form of study as it is certain to improve essay writing, verbal communication and article reading speeds.

The Reading Approach

This approach introduces students directly to a piece of text (primarily adapted) and allows them to begin translating right away. Grammar takes a back seat and is learned as it becomes necessary. Students of the reading method typically learn the language more slowly but are introduced to a wider array of literature and classical culture.

An MFL Approach

The 'Modern Foreign Language' approach is very popular at the moment especially when teaching children. It approaches Latin through puzzles, games, worksheets, texts and even songs. This approach to Latin teaching is incredibly new and I am pleased to be involve with the research aspect of it for 'Swansea University'.

This is a perfect approach for anyone, adult or child, that wants to Latin in a fun and intuitive way. You will not find this method being taught anywhere else online for adults.

Which Approach?

Each student is given a free, thirty minute lesson in which we can look at examples from the three different approaches and decide on the correct one for that student.

I am a highly achieving and passionate student from a local Grammar School, studying for A-Levels in French, Spanish, English Literature and Geography, with a view of reading Modern Languages at Oxford.
