Personal Description:
My name is Hywel and I've been tutoring biology since 2002 after receiving my bachelor of science at Reading University. I have completed a PGCE (post graduate certificate of education) in further education and lectured for three and a half years in anatomy and physiology. I've always loved tutoring and helping my students so I've set up this site to aid all those struggling in biology! For the last three years I have tutored GCSE maths, having studied statistics at university. Finally I tutor in chess, teaching the tactics and strategies of the game, an interest of mine which I have brought to several private schools in the area.

I commute within 8 miles and also tutor online via Skype at 22 for an hour.

Teaching Experience:

I've lectured in several colleges, including anatomy and physiology at Afan College for four years. For the last four years I have taught GCSE maths, GCSE biology and GCSE environmental and land based science at a home education group. My private tuition experience in biology is extensive, having carried it out for fourteen years.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor lessons to student's needs, making sure revision and exam techniques match knowledge and understanding. Work is carried out by both tutor and student to ensure a rise in grades. Seeing my students enjoy their work as their grades increase is one of the most rewarding parts to tuition and I bring this enthusiasm to all my lessons.

Personal Description:
I went to school in Rugby and have lived here off and on for the last 50 years. I retired early from teaching to go travelling in Europe in a Camper Van. My hobbies include DIY, cooking, pub quizzes, golf, walking and following Chesterfield football club. I enjoy socialising and spending time with my family. I work occasionally for an out of school tuition service teaching Mathematics to students who are out of school for medical reasons. My main subjects are A level and GCSE Economics, A level and GCSE Business and GCSE Mathematics. I also teach privately and over the last 2 years have taught seven students. The 3 students I taught mathematics to both achieved C grades at higher level. Initially they were studying foundation level! The 4 students who studied A Level Economics with me all achieved A* in their examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 30 years in 3 different schools and 2 colleges of further education. I have taught Economics, Business Studies and Mathematics to GCSE level and Business Studies and Economics to A level. The students I have taught have nearly always achieved their potential grade or better. I have taught students of all levels of ability and always established a good working relationship with them.

Tutoring Approach:

I have experiece of teaching students on a one to one basis having taught Economics and Mathematics as a private tutor. I believe it is important to establish a positive working relationship with each student I teach. It is important to establish early on the weaknesses in understanding of different topics and where possible to turn these weaknesses into strengths. Very often problems in understanding are due to a lack of confidence sometimes because the tutee is reluctant to ask for clarification in the classroom or because they simply don't understand the basics of the subject. On a one to one basis the tutor has more time to explain the basics and develop the skills of the tutee and the tutee is more likely to respond to this without feeling they are inadequate.
An important part of tutoring is practicing exam type questions and past examination papers in order to increase the students confidence and ability to answer questions under examination conditions. The key to success is establishing which topics are easy for the student to understand and making sure the students can answer any possible exam questions on these topics.

Personal Description:
I am the Head of Religious Studies and I have been teaching for eight years on a full-time basis with an abundance of experience relating to GCSE and A-Level Religious Studies. I have delivered four of the A-Level modules offered by CCEA up to A2 Level (Luke's Gospel, Celtic Church, Ethics and Old Testament). All of the students I have tutored have succeeded in achieving A*- B grades at both GCSE and A Level. I can tutor the A-Level modules stated above along with a range of GCSE modules. I am also a Senior Examiner for the AQA exam board.

Teaching Experience:

Our Lady and St. Patrick's College Knock, Kingsway Gardens, Belfast
Full-time (Temporary) Teacher of Religious Studies (2 years)

St. Mary's Christian Brothers' Grammar School, Belfast
Full-time (Permanent) Head of Religious Studies (Current employment)

Tutoring Approach:

I often hold revision classes for small groups of students studying GCSE and A-Level R.E. I tend to work out the revision technique that suits the child best and create mind-maps to faciliate student learning. I have devised my own revision booklets with the key facts on each topic summarised in a manageable way. I work through past paper questions with the students and go through the mark scheme with them to highlight the strengths and areas for development in their work.

Personal Description:
I have a first class degree in mathematics. I am learning Russian. I am interested in astronomy.

Teaching Experience:

I have helped many students achieve much better results than they initially expected. Many people find that they can understand what they at first found difficult in a well managed one to one setting. I give the lessons at my home. I have been tutoring since 1987. I have a first class honours degree in mathematics. I work as a mathematics tutor in a state school, teaching A level maths to sixth-formers and able pupils in lower years. I have also helped students prepare for STEP. I get about half my students on recommendation

Tutoring Approach:

I do in the lesson what the student asks me to do, but I am prepared to structure a course for somebody not in school,

Personal Description:
I am a returning ex-pat having lived and worked in Spain for 13 years. I learned Spanish naturally and have a similar approach to teaching. I use the similarities between the languages to lower barriers and make learning fun and easy. I teach natural Spanish not endless grammar or lists of nouns or verbs. I have been in a face to face environment all my working life and put people at their ease quickly. I have used the language in both a casual and business environment.

Teaching Experience:

As a private tutor I have been helping students for over 3 years now. I have developed a method of making the language accessible and easy to speak. There are no verb lists. Here's the challenge: I can teach present tense verb endings in 10 minutes, past tense in 5 minutes and future in one minute. How long have you been trying? Make learning fun!

Tutoring Approach:

I learned Spanish naturally and have a similar approach to teaching. I use the similarities between the languages to lower barriers and make learning fun and easy. I teach natural Spanish not endless grammar or lists of nouns or verbs. Students find my methods fun and relevant. I can offer support to academic learning within a curriculum or help people to get by on holiday. If required I can take a student through to fluency in a manner more suited to everyday use.

Personal Description:
I'm a native Spanish speaker currently living in Leigh on Sea, I would love to teach and converse with anyone interested in learning the language or improve their speaking and listening skills.
I'm friendly, patient, relaxed, reliable and dedicated. I'm able to teach based on levels and objectives, Grammar, Pronunciation, Speaking, Reading, Writing or simply Conversational classes. I can help you!
I can use different media (videos, books, movies, songs) to teach.
I got a degree in Commercial Admin since 2001.

Teaching Experience:

It is easier for me to teach Spanish because I studied English as a second language, so I understand the process and challenges of learning another language. I know that every person learns in a different way. I am currently working in a private school in Chelmsford. Also, I've teaching Spanish to my own children as they were born here in the UK. I have been teaching Spanish to Adult beginners and GCSE students.

Tutoring Approach:

Based on my experience the communicative approach gives primacy to oral work. Direct contact with the language is very important. Not just from hearing the teacher, but also from using it and from hearing other people besides the teacher. Having personal contact with the language, practicing sounds, improvising and trying to make your own sentences and getting the chance to make mistakes and learn from doing so.

Personal Description:
The social sciences are my expertise. In particular, cinema and art history with critical theory. I have extensive research experience in continental philosophy (Kant, Hegel, Marx, Althusser, Deleuze, Adorno, Badiou, etc.) and am well-versed in a wide-range of media and art theory topics (e.g. modernity, medium specificity, globalisation, avant-gardes, etc.).

I have a decade of experience as a media producer for various web and radio enterprises, and have written professionally for a range of digital publications.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 5 years of experience tutoring across the subjects listed in my profile. And I have also advised successfully on essays, coursework, dissertations and exam preparation from A-level to postgraduate level.

Coursework, essays and dissertation topics I have recently supervised:

- The semiotics of Barthes and Jakobsen
- Base, superstructure and ideological state apparatuses between Marx and Althusser
- The 'wilderness cosmology' of Daoism in classical Chinese Poetry
- Social unrest and China's modernisation project in the cinema of Jia Zhangke
- A comparative political analysis of Halklarin Demokratik Partisi and Ciudadanos
- Jean Baudrillard's concept of Hyperreality and 'The Truman Show'
- Phenomenology and Bad Faith between Edmund Husserl and Jean-Paul Sartre
- Postmodern urbanism and the cinema of Neill Blomkamp
- The Fauvist revolution in modern painting
- The Printing Press and media theory since Elizabeth Eisenstein
- Consumerism, and the media spectacle in urban Chengdu
- The fashion film and the "bad bitch": post-feminist representation in contemporary Hollywood cinema

Do contact me to discuss your specific essay, presentation or dissertation needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer two types of tuition: online (text-based) and in-person (verbal).

Online tuition is the most efficient method for written assignment preparation; superior in my experience than in-person tuition since the student is naturally obliged to articulate concepts, issues and questions directly in the written form that they are required to submit their essays, dissertations, and coursework in. This avoids the extra labour of translating verbal communication to written communication and vice-versa, which slows progress. I conduct online tuition via Skype, which is free to download and use.

In-person tuition is, however, better suited and encouraged for verbal assignments, like presentations and language-speaking practice.

Regardless of type, I always apply a needs-based approach to tuition; allowing my students' needs to dictate pace and intensity. I can, therefore, work closely on particular syllabus material in relation to coursework and exams, or take a broader approach to adult and casual learning.

I offer a full range of help on written work, from "brainstorming", essay or dissertation plans, literature reviews, primary-source gathering, all the way to polishing up the final draft before submission. All written work that I proof-read and supervise will be returned with in-line annotations (using MS Word or LibreOffice's comments and tracked-changes) offering detailed criticisms and suggestions on how to improve anything from grammar, structure, analysis, tone, argument and so forth. I also work fast: written work received before noon can be expected back the same day.
